message that last about two minutes. i want to show that to you now. >> i wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you personally for all the wonderful messages of support and for your understanding whilst i've been recovering from surgery it has been an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family but i've had a fantastic medical team who've taken great care of me for which i'm so grateful. in january, i underwent major domino surgery in london. and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous the surgery was successful. however, tests after the operation on cancer had been present my medical team therefore advice that i should undergo a course of preventive chemotherapy and i'm now in the early stages about treatment this of course came as a huge shock. and william and i have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of all young family as you can imagine, this has taken time. it has taken me time to recover for major surgery in order to start my treatment but most importantly, it is taken as time to explain everything to george charlotte and louis in a way that's appropriate for them. and to reassure them that i'm going to be okay as i've said to them, i am well and getting stronger every day. bye focusing on the things that will help me here in my mind, body, and spirit having william by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance to as, as the love, support, and kindness that is being shown by so many of you. it means so much trust both we hope that you'll understand that as a family. we now need some time space and purposely, while i complete my treatment my work has always bought me a deep sense of joy. and i look forward to being back when i'm able but for now, i must focus on making a full recovery at this time. >> i'm also thinking >> of all those whose lives have been affected by cancer for everyone facing this disease, in whatever form please do not lose faith or hope. you are not alone >> you were not alone on the right to cnn's a royal correspondent, max foster. max, i know you've been hearing more over the course of this hour. what is the latest? >> this is just you watch that video. this is a big thing for anyone to do. but isn't always comfortable in the camera's doing things like that and that was a big except for very powerful and she would have made that decision. she would have to sign off on it. i wanted to in this way, i want to do it on when i don't need prince william and this, i need to own this i think that would have taken a lot of building up to another explanation for why we haven't seen much of a recently, but we've just heard from buckingham palace of spokesman just sent me a note about the king from the king, his majesty is so proud of catherine to her courage in speaking as she did following her time in hospital together he's not just c has remained in the closest contact with his beloved daughter in law throughout the past weeks both their majesties will continue to offer their love and support to the whole family through this difficult time. i think it was quite a unique experience wasn't it for katyn charles spin hospital together and having pretty similar experiences going into one procedure and coming out with a completely different diagnosis but he's very much looking at that video. she put out today and really paying tribute to her. and the way she speaks at the children and clearly, he feels that she's getting all of her priorities right there. anderson >> mentioned so interesting. there has been so much obviously their consternation and conspiracy theories about, about catherine over the last amino two weeks or more. it's in a moment like this when you really see this family that so many people see from a far and see on balconies and and riding around in carriages. big celebrations. you see that them very much as human and very much as mortal and she is a young woman sitting on this bench telling the world this extremely personal diagnosis >> yeah, i think it's it's part of the shock. isn't it? because you do realize they are vulnerable like everyone else. >> but >> projected as this brand, which is invincible in a way it's been around for thousand years and we're so used to the queen thing around for so long shortly after the king takes the throne, we found like he's got cancer. and the thing about key issues this this vision of vibrancy. she's very sporty, she's we energetic. she's very beautiful she's fantastic mom from everything. i've seen really hands on and i think it's a shock when we had the queen was l, that was a shock even though she was so old, but it's just this vulnerability, someone that's in your life, you don't know them personally, but they've been part of your life for so long. and they might not be there and then you figure out what if charles and kate weren't notice that sort of processing. so i think it is very personal for a lot of people. and it's kate spoke to in her video. think about other people who suffer from cancer this is something i really saw when the queen died that people connected with that moment because three people who've died in their own lives. and i think people now we'll be thinking of people who suffered from cancer in their own lives and they're looking at kate someone that's fungible to that, someone you wouldn't expect to be vulnerable to any sort of illness is just this vision of vibrancy less said as far as i'm concerned about distasteful, upsetting conspiracy theories that boiled up in sometimes they now have a reason for why we didn't see them interesting that pretty much the only thing i didn't see online recent weeks for speculation that she could have cancer. but i think everyone needs to step back a bit and really think about not just what they're putting online, what they're consuming online and just sticking to the facts on cnn we've had lots of discussions about this. we want people to get the facts and it's an incredibly hard story to tell because there have been so few facts, but now we know why we weren't being given information i think it's understandable that you'd want to protect your kids, frankly, >> this is also an opportunity as we saw when the king, king charles was public, which is again very rare for a king to give a medical diagnosis, make it public. but when he talked about prostate cancer, numbers of people going in for testing for checkups went up dramatically in the united kingdom. it's this may also have the similar factor are people would be more aware of forms of abdominal cancer, with that in mind, max, i want to bring back in dr. otis brawley, a professor of oncology and epidemiology at johns hopkins university dr. broglie, i'm sorry, we were interrupted before with breaking news out of out of russia. but i just want to continue the conversation because again the palace is not saying what form of cancer this is but it was in catherine's words, major abdominal surgery. and that after putting her after the surgery, doctors discovered this cancer and chemotherapy started in late february. judge, for people i talked to dr. in the last hour who was talking about colorectal cancer and how now the recommended age for having tests done for anybody checkups done for anybody on that has been lowered. can you just talk about the forms of what potentially what kind of a domino cancers there are. and when in people have something checked out >> sure. >> and i can full disclosure was a co-author of the american american cancer society guideline that recommended that people start screaming at 45 instead of 50. >> that for for colorectal cancer for colorectal cancer? >> yes. then why why why lowered the age and y is the the level of colorectal or the incidences of colorectal cancer in young people. why is that rising? again, we don't know that it's colorectal cancer, but that is one form of possibility. >> yeah. we should go through the cancerous if we have time in the 1990s, 10% of all colorectal cancers diagnosed and 10% of all people who were dying of colorectal cancer were diagnosed before the age of 50. today it's 20%, it's doubled over the last 25 to 30 years. now, probably has to do with increasing patterns of obesity in the united states, less exercise. we're eating more processed foods may have to do with increasing use of antibiotics. we don't know all the reasons, but we do know that there's an increase among people glad to the age of 50. while i say that i also need to say that we know colorectal cancer screening, bid stool blood testing, stool dna, or colonoscopy saves lives and we know that 40 plus percent of people over 50 don't get those screening tests. turns out current above about a button on that anybody out there above the age at around the age of 45 are saying should get tested that's right. if they have a family history, they need to talk to the dr. and perhaps do it even earlier and there's a lot of lives lost because people are not getting screened and are. there other forms of cancer that in around the abdomen of the people should be tested for >> well, the major one is colorectal cancer ovarian cancer. we may be dealing with ovarian cancer here we don't have good screening tests for, but women who have abdominal pain and abdominal difficulties most people who have those problems will not have cancer, but they need to have a good conversation with their dr. so we can find the few who actually do. i don't want to scare all women who have a little bit of gas pain these are a little bit of lower abdominal discomfort. most of that is that cancer. but a small number we'll have cancer in the only way to figure it out is to go talk to a dr. and work with a dr. to get it diagnosed. >> and is that something that both ovarian cancer and colorectal cancer, is that something that runs? you mentioned that it may run in families with colorectal cancer. is it something that runs in families with ovarian cancer as well >> yes >> yeah. ovarian cancer endometrial cancer can both can run in people's families with endometrial cancer women may very well have abnormal menstrual bleeding and as a sign, again, this is reason not to panic because most of these people will not have cancer, but it is reason to go to a dr. and have a good conversation and possibly some testing and again, we're limited because we don't know what form of cancer this is or the stage. it may be a but in terms of chemotherapy, if chemotherapy is now a course of treatment, is there any sense of how difficult that may be? what length of time that kind of a treatment may last for >> yeah >> by the way, no cancer and colorectal cancer, we very frequently we'll do surgery and then afterwards we will give chemotherapy. the regimens are different, but the chemotherapy therapy for example, a varying cancer is several drugs that are given every three weeks six times. and then we tried to go back and look and see if there's any evidence of disease that might be present again, i stress these are chemotherapies that are given to people who have had served surgery and after surgery have no evidence of disease, but they fit into a category in terms of the disease that they have. >> that >> there may be some disease present that the doctors just can't find. and so we will give the chemotherapy in colon cancer. it's given over a period of about six it's months in ovarian cancer, it's given over a slightly shorter period of time and i must stress that there are a number of people who get these therapies and do very well dr. otis brawley, ever so appreciate your expertise and your time. thank you very much i want to bring it. thank you, sir. i want to bring in our julia chatterley, who's here with me such a a sad a sad turn in this. and obviously, i mean, people around the world are going to be watching and praying for catherine is heartbreaking to hear it was also painful to watch, i think, but for me the strength that she showed as maxar saying the decision to present what was going on in this manner to be on her own because prince william could have been next to her supporting her and she chose to do it on her own. she somehow managed to combine regal with vulnerable in a way that she does. so while i just as human, human, i think for anybody watching and i know you showed that video that moment when she described the huge shock and we know when you're nervous and your throat goes in your voice goes in the moment she took that inhalation to say it, she was controlling her motions in that video. i find it it's quite emotional to watch the strength that she showed there, but also and i think this explains a lot of what has been speculated over of what we've discussed in the past few weeks. is that the children came first. they were in school. >> she chose >> not clearly to take them out of school in some way and to keep their lives as regular as they could throughout this process. and now they've broken up for holiday and they can deal with it themselves. this will send and has some sort of global bombshell around the world. now, it's don't have to face the questions because we know children are light. they can ask the question again. >> there's also just a reminder of the just to kind of humanness of their existence that they're worried about what other kids in school will be saying to their children in school. they're in school. >> it's a fairy tale family in so many ways, there are all families she's so regal, she's so perfect, but in the end, they are five people in there are three very vulnerable children in this and they pick the time, i think very carefully. i think what's also so deeply heartbreaking about this is as maxar said, what they've been through with all the wild speculation and the the traumas and the criticism and the photographs and things. and actually what it was was a woman dealing with what is clearly traumatic surgery and now recovery and then chemotherapy. i mean, for anybody and it's most of us whose lives have been touched in some way by cancer what this very royal but also very human family is going through is a big challenge and they need the space now is she asked for? but i will say one more thing again, coming back to being a princess at the end where she said, you repeated the line, you're not alone if you're out there also suffering with cancer you're not alone princess to the beginning and the end there. i think we're going to take a short break about her cancer, but we're also falling breaking news out of moscow, russia >> reports a mass shooting at a concert hall with at least 40 people dead. the hall now and golden flames, you see the images there. it is unclear whether more victims are protected tensley shooters are inside. what we do know is that cnn has geo-located a video showing four armed attackers opening fire inside a shopping center, just outside the concert hall this is a screen grab from that video, we're not showing you the entire video, just off-screen is the moment a group of civilians can be seen huddling together as the men fire at them. a number of them fall to the ground than attackers can then be seen shooting out the glass doors to the hall and moving inside. now, in a separate video recorded inside the hall you can also hear the sound of gunfire global affairs correspondent matthew chance joins us now, live from london. matthew, we're just in russia earlier this week. what are you hearing about this situation now? >> yeah, i mean, it came out yesterday, so it's astonishing to look at these dramatic images and see the chaos and the bloodshed that's unfolding it really, i mean, it's not in moscow city itself. it's just on the outskirts of the city. so formula, it's in the moscow region, but it's very close to moscow. it's a major conference center it's her and shopping center and concert hall as well. the korocha city mall. it's called >> and you can see the scenes of chaos said that the billowing smoke above, that building, according to russian state television, the roof of the building has collapsed as a result of fire and explosions that we heard earlier inside you see those images. they're of an auditorium, because it was during or as a concert of a soviet era band called picnic was about to start. and so a lot of people have gathered in that constant halts to watch a play, but they attack took place as you say, we're looking at approximately four people that we can see on video that have been carrying out its attack, firing automatic weapons towards people. there have been explosions in the area as well. there are lots of ambulances dozens of ambulances have been sent by the local authorities. think the figure i read was at least 50, possibly more ambulances being sent them that gives you an indication of the concerns your '30s have about the casualties were talking about preliminary figures of according to the tass news agency, which is the state news agency, i think you mentioned it already 40 people 40 confirmed dead and obviously this situation is still ongoing by the sounds of we don't know whether the attackers have been killed, whether they've been neutralized in some other way. and we don't, know how many people are still trapped inside what looks like a burning concert hall on the outskirts of moscow >> anderson i mean, matthew, i maybe i'm dating myself the only time i can recall anything similar like this in moscow was 2002 win. i think some 50 chechen separatists took over a theater the, i think it was the braf could theater. and that went on for several days. and finally, the spits knots, the russian special forces gas, the entire the're killing more than 100. there are about 850 hostages, i think inside is there something like this? has this anything like this happened in recent times >> well, i mean, you right. i mean, i was actually at that theater instead, the probe catheter, the nor doest siege. it was called when that storming of the theater took place by russian special forces and obviously there are parallels. i mean, look at that auditorium, it's a very similar auditorium back in 2002 where the the chechen militants took those hostages, 850 hostages before the place was steamed, everyone was sort of put to sleep with a gas a sort of undisclosed substance, which ended up killing quite a lot of people because let's the doctors outside didn't have the anecdote to it. and so that was sort of like a fumbled mishandled operation to end the siege at the moment, it's not clear whether there are hostages inside this or what the situation is inside. but look, you're right. it was chechens that carried out that 2002 attack on the bravo theater it's a inside moscow. russia has a long history of problems with terrorism from the north caucasus, from chechnya, from english gettier, from places like that. and i know that within the past few weeks russian special forces in carrying out raids against islamist militants inside inke chetty, which is a russian republic, very close to chechnya. it may well be linked with that. it's not clear if it's anything other than chechen separatists, though, or islamist from inside russia. i think it will be a very new departure. for instance, if this has anything to do with ukraine and there's no indication at this stage that it is. but if it is, i mean, that that would obviously be a very new sort of situation that we haven't seen before. inside russia. so at the moment, the authorities are not drawing any conclusions, not making any conclusions as saying a criminal investigation has been started, but they haven't named yet who they believe is responsible for this so at this point, we don't know if this is still, if we don't know if i mean, i always think in these situations it's good to point out what we don't know. we've seen a video with four gunmen. we don't know if there are more than four. we don't know if this is still ongoing the status of the people inside the building there's report the roof has collapsed, but we don't know whether this attack is still underway >> that it's right. i mean, that's that's right. there's an awful lot we don't know including all of those things you just listed. i mean, look looking at these images that you can see, there's a fire still underway and there's there's images coming in on social media there all the time, which we've all been sort of, sort of looking at. some of them absolutely horrific, which we couldn't possibly broadcast. but it does indicate that this situation is not yet under control. i am certain that the russian authorities are keen to bring it under control. and so as soon as it is under control, will get an announcement on that. yeah. we're looking at gunman. you can see that still let's graph of three of them there there was in that video, there's another gunman as well, so there's at least four people who were involved. does this have i've seen some reports and it was it was more than that. but these are not not confirmed facts at this stage, but you can see the security operation, the emergency response from those images. look how many blue flashing lights this is a major incident, not in the center of moscow. it's true 20 miles or so from the center of moscow, but still a major incident affecting the russian capital matthew. i want to bring in julia ya phi, who is a founding partner in washington correspondent for puck. julia, you were born in russia. i want to talk about the significance of an attack like this at this juncture. what do you make of what we are seeing? >> well, it's stunning because it's less than a week, just a few days after putins quote-unquote election to his fifth term in which he got 87% of the vote, showed everybody that he is here to stay, that he is the tsar of russia. he's not going going anywhere. and part of his message has always been something like bibi netanyahu's that he's the only one who can provide for russian security, both as a country and as a people and the fact that this, something like this happens immediately after his election is blows that. myth right up >> in terms of the i mean, again, we don't know who is responsible for this or what this exact status of it. it is now certainly it's not again, i come back to that 2000 to attack. this is the only i don't do you know are they have there been other kind of large-scale attacks like that of a hostage taking in in any kind of complexes oh yes there have been many, many attacks in russia, proper, including in moscow, in the >> basically the first decade or so of putin's reign. even while i lived in russia two female suicide bombers blew themselves up in the moscow metro and killed a few dozen people russia >> recently i met in recent in recent times in the last ten years or so >> that's the thing is putin has a part of his claim to the throne is that he has neutralize the terrorist threat that he has neutralized the internal threat, the external threat that he is now fighting the west and ukraine, so that the west doesn't bring the war to russia again, he's a strong man and this severely dense his image. again, we don't know who this is. we also don't know. we don't know if this is connected to islamize terrorism, ukrainians, we don't also don't know if this is an operation planned by the russian special services themselves. they've done things like this before >> so really right now, we don't know >> anything, but it's what we do know is it's certainly not a good look i just five days after declaring victory in the presidential race, 1 on quote and showing that he was so firmly in control of russia of all its people having neutralized any opposition whatsoever inside russia. >> and >> now i've days later we have this it's also in given a that it hasn't happened a long time and even the last time in 2000 to the prime example of the bravo theater in that case most of the people who are many of the people who died were the hostages and they would died by the gas that was poured in by russian special forces. >> all right. and there was a terrorist attack in 2017, like there were still sporadic terrorist attacks in big russian cities. so 2000 he was not the last one, but that was a big one in terms of russian capabilities to deal with something like this. how does it compare to other countries? >> well, this is what's interesting is russia is a police state. it has more police per capita than the us it is somewhere up there with china and north korea has one of the highest proportions of police to civilian population in the world. but as we're seeing, it's much better at neutralizing peaceful protesters than it is at dealing with real threats, real security threats like this one so the afi i appreciate your time. thank you. matthew chance as well be for everyone facing this disease, in whatever form please do not lose faith or hope you are not alone >> let's say man was released about 02:00 and a steward is joining us and we are just received a statement understand from king charles, what does he say? >> he's saying he is so proud of his daughter-in-law for the courage and sharing that cancer diagnosis. and of course, this is something that very much bonded over the king himself receiving treatment right now for cancer as well. and actually a very similar situation going in for a planned surgery. not expecting to find any cancer there and then having this awful shock, having to digest that and then having to share that with the public so you can see that there's been a horrible few weeks and months really for the royal family undergoing one medical shock after another really. and also, i think the statement that we've had from the princess, listening to that video message. >> not >> only is she having to sort of absorb this news herself as a family, but also having to explain to the public why it has taken them some time to speak to the public and to actually make a sort of public appearance and also having to make very clear that they need privacy at this time >> mr. thanks so much. sally smith joins me now celie, i mean, obviously this has been a difficult process for them to come to grips with. i mean, obviously, both personally and publicly, i'm wondering what stood out to you and in her announcement excuse me, i have laryngitis bear with me. >> but >> it was authentic. kate she was dignified. she was natural. she was in sir she was real and intensely and i think that's those qualities were sort of all crystallized in every single word she said. and when she said at the end, you are not alone minded me of the late green elizabeth, the second. it was a sort of thing. she would have said, but it was direct and it was very sincere. and also very empathetic for those people who are also suffering from cancer. and the other thing that struck me is what has been alluded to earlier, which is we have these two crucial people in the royal family who have cancer and they're incredibly devoted to each other getting charles has always been very fond of of kate and has seen all up her wallet is i'm sure this has brought them even closer together. and i guess my third was how different is from what went on in the 20th century. there was once odd anomaly, which was in 19 8.19, 29, and king george the fifth head terrible bronchitis, pneumonia and they almost died. >> but >> he went for a rescuer at ablaze on the coast. wagner and he wanted but he wanted everybody to see. so we went in this ambulance with very large windows so everybody could see him go by in this hospital bed. i mean, it was a little anomalous but but at that time, actually, for that particular illness, there were many specific bulletins that went out to the public not so for his george, this x when he was diagnosed with lung cancer in 1951 the doctors went in and removed his left lung. they saw ads are in the right lung and they decided they would not ellen because but in 1951, there was nothing they could do about it. and they thought, why do we bring anxiety on the family when now now we have such an extraordinary array of treatments or the brin's, as in the gang have the ability to get access to all those treatments. and i think she was being honest in saying she feels good she is confident that she will be that you will be wet and she actually age. it just goes even more work king charles never said what kind of error, but he was having and she very specifically said chemotherapy and something that they have they have that they will share and they will hopefully avoid each other she has a very large support network, not only her family, but she has lot of friends and william energy odhran, that's >> certainly a big change in how the royal family has dealt with things in the past. sally bedel smith. thank you. i want to talk to rachel burchfield, the royal editor for marie claire rachel, obviously a shocking announcement today. it's really puts to rest a lot of speculation that has been going on and tabloids and elsewhere there's certainly a lot of support in this the support for catherine. i can only imagine hygiene is going to just grow not only in the united kingdom, but throughout the world >> i hope so. i hope that the emphasis on the word support, there are few people in the world that are treated worse than a woman who marries into the royal family. and i just urge there's all people all around the world, whether you follow the royal family, whether you don't. >> when >> we think of princess kate, let's think right now more about kate than the princess. when you think about the royal family, let's think more about the family than the royalty and just, let's have empathy. the internet loss. it's collective mind over kate. these this past month. and some of the things >> that were said are just disgusting. and i hope that this can be a moment of reckoning for all of us on the internet and social media to be more empathetic, to be kinder, to realize, as we've seen through this amazing video that is just so touching it's difficult not to tear up every time i watch it. but she's a human being. she's a mom, she's 42 years old and she's going through such a difficult time in her life. meanwhile, the world is piling on her. i think we can do so much better in the way we treat each other and we can definitely do better in the way that we treat women who marry into the royal family. kate and others >> rachel, i appreciate your time and your comments here in new york i truly chatterley. >> it is so we were talking before the the humanness of what she was saying. and i think to rachel's point it is so it's just a statement so many people can relate to. >> yes. she was a human, a mother, a wife, and someone who's tried to battle all of these things getting over major surgery now, dealing with chemotherapy, also as someone and most of us wouldn't have to deal with in this city duration, abuse as we were just hearing their of criticisms of what she has and hasn't said or what's going on. and three tall, she came out and gave her incredibly strong vulnerable caring statement that pointed to protecting her children, that she is grateful for her husband and that even at a time of great distress, as you could see in, as i mentioned, and i still go back to that the emotion that you could hear in her voice and her children, george is ten years old, charlotte is aide, louis is five having those conversations that's an extraordinary difficult thing. what do you say to a child to a 10-year-old or add to a five-year-old. i mean, it's different conversations. one would have. >> yeah. i think you try and contain it, which is what they've done. they've and she said she wanted to reassure the children that she's gonna be okay. and this is going to be okay. what they clearly didn't want was for them to be in an environment where people who've also perhaps had family members that have had cancer that have got very sick of lost family members were asking the children very difficult questions it's because they can't control that. and i think we're all talking about this now. everybody is going to be talking about this now she did her best to protect a family so i think everybody can understand that no matter who you are. and i think there is something i think there's something very emotional about watching anybody go through this, but particularly someone who's in the public in his required to be so perfect i think we wish her well, i think everybody watches a while so we can say yes, julie, generally thanks so much. we're going to take a short break for falling the other major breaking news right now, authorities in russia say number of people have been killed, dozens, others now from london, you just left moscow, believe it was yesterday what's the latest that you were hearing in this situation? >> well, it's still very unclear what the situation is at the moment. it seems that it's not under control yet. we're seeing live images come from that that concert hall and shopping center. just outside the city of moscow. it's called the crocker city hall and, quick city more rather and it's still in flames. and there are still large numbers of emergency services there. you can see some of their flashing blue lights on the screen there and some smoke billowing act. look, i mean, according to local media, state media in russia were talking about at least 40 people who have been killed as a result of this attack, which we believe according to local officials, was carried out by at least four gunman dressed in camouflage, carrying automatic weapons, sort of walking into this shopping mall, which is a giant complex, concert cinemas, shopping facilities, everything, restaurants, walking in an opening fire on people inside. there was a concert being held. there hadn't quite started yet, but large numbers of people had gathered to see a concert by a soviet era band are very popular in russia called picnic. they didn't actually take the stage because the gunfire and the explosions and there were several explosions apparently took place before the concert began. you can see that the auditorium with people getting up from their seats and trying to make their way to the exit says that as that gunfire continues, again, the situation question, addison is not fully it seems been brought under control yet. and so look at the moment the death toll according to local officials, been quoted by state news agencies, is 40 people but i think everybody is bracing themselves for the possibility that that could go much higher in the hours ahead in matthew on march 7, the us embassy in russia center security alert telling americans to avoid large gatherings, specifically concerts, amid reports >> that extremist had plans to target large gatherings i mean, is there any indication as to who may be responsible >> yeah. i mean, this was an they call it, with targeting areas where lots of people would gather, including concerts and they named that they said that word in the actual statement, i've spoken to the us embassy within the past few minutes asking them to clarify who those extremist were. were they islamists with people linked with ukraine or what nested? they're not gonna do that, but they did say there is going to be a
