diagnosed with cancer. it was discovered after she went into surgery in january, the tests that were carried out in that surgery reveal the cancer. we're not going to be told what type of cancer it is. >> but >> again, to let take herself speak to you in her own words i wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you personally for all the wonderful messages of support and for your understanding maasai being recovering from surgery it is been an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family but i've had a fantastic medical team who've taken great care of me for which i'm so grateful. in january ion de major domino surgery in london. and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous the surgery was successful however, tests after the operation pan cancer had been present my medical team therefore, advice that i should undergo a course of preventive chemotherapy and i'm now in the early stages of that treatment this of course came as a huge shock. and william and i have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of my young family as you can imagine, this has taken time. it has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment but most importantly, it is taken as time to explain everything to george charlotte and louis in a way that's appropriate for them. and to reassure them that i'm going to be okay as i've said to them, i am well and getting stronger every day. bye focusing on the things that will help me here in my mind, body, and spirit having william by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance to as is the love, support, and kindness that has been shown by so many of you it means so much trust both we hope that you'll understand that as a family. we now need some time space and privacy. while i complete my treatment my work has always bought me a deep sense of joy. and i look forward to being back when i move on. but for now, i must focus on making a full recovery at this time. >> i'm also >> thinking of all those whose lives have been affected by cancer for everyone facing this disease, in whatever form please do not lose faith or hope you are not alone >> it's a very powerful message, isn't it does explain, doesn't it? but the reason why we haven't seen her she needed time to recover from what we now know is major abdominal surgery she and her family at the time to decompress. she needed to start treatment. she started chemo in february and they wanted to wait until now because the kids broke up from school. today. so hopefully, all these people making all those speculative comments now have their answer >> no it explained that was recorded at kensington palace. that is where they currently reside. is it not? >> well the, currently in windsor, their offices in kensington palace so they one of the things i'm being told is that we have to respect our privacy at this point this point, the kids start school holiday, she thinks it's really important to keep a regular routine. she will be out on about she doesn't want people taking photos. i'll first wants people to give them time and so they wanted to be transparent as possible, but they needed to put the kids first and it's been a huge amount to take on the also this chemo is going to last a while. the recovery is going to last a while. we're not going to see her for a while. >> she >> may choose to appear events, but she's not going to be coming back to work full time for it anytime soon. i'm told anderson >> right. and actually, if you can stand by, i want to bring in dr. sanjay gupta for just as much medical advice as we can and information we can get on this sanjay. she says that in january it was major abdominal surgery that she had he'd been told by doctors they they did not believe it was cancerous before the surgery was after the surgery, they found cancer was president she said she needed a time to recover from the major surgery in order to start treatment, can you talk a little bit about from a medical standpoint what stands out to you? >> yeah i mean i think the timeline that you just laid out is really interesting and important. i mean, that was a very touching statement. obviously, but we still don't know what kind of cancer this is as max mentioned, we don't know what stage this is, but january 16 does when we were told she was going in for surgery the next day we were told that she's probably going to have a somewhat prolonged hospitalization and it was almost two weeks, 13 days later that she was discharged. that was end of january. and then it was end of february where we now understand she started this chemotherapy and obviously we're hearing about this three weeks later for all the reasons she mentioned. one thing, they they use this current preventive chemotherapy in the statement which i think is a very non-medical term. i mean, you don't give chemotherapy preventively she has cancer. we don't know what kind of cancer it is. and this is typically something that's referred to as adjuvant chemotherapy, meaning something alongside the surgery. now that's being given but what stands out to me is that it's very touching, but we don't know the cancer, we don't know the staging. we did not hear anything from the medical team saying, hey, look, we expect a full recovery. she obviously that but it's there's there's a lot of questions i think that's still remain need to be answered. i think in some some way >> and so just talk a little bit about chemotherapy again, we don't know what type of cancer is or how it right. but what is sort of in general, how does chemotherapy work? does someone have to go to a hospital for that could is that something that can be done privately at their residence? what sort of effect does it have >> yeah. i mean, there's these are medications that are typically given the bloodstream. sometimes they can be given as a pill orally if it's given in the bloodstream, then skip a do typically go to the hospital. of course, we're talking about the royal families. so i think anything probably as possible for the royal family in terms of doing it more privately but as mac said, it can be several weeks of these therapies and that they're designed like the basic notion is we did the operation. now we find cancer. there's likely to be some cancer that is remaining in the body. let's give chemotherapy to try and target those remaining cells that's the basic idea behind chemo. but i almost can't say anything more than that because we don't know what kind of cancer we don't know what stage we don't know what the chemotherapy is. and we don't know even what type, meaning which he need to be. even an outpatient setting in the hospital and just in terms of how arduous is it between i mean, i know people who've had chemotherapy and it's incredibly >> debilitating, is that always the case >> now, not necessarily always the case. and there are some that are far more debilitating than others and i wanted to just really careful because again, we don't there's so many things we don't know, but one of the things that you think about with cancer cells is that they divide very rapidly. okay? so you're targeting cells that are dividing very rapidly. that's what chemotherapy does. >> what >> other cells divide very rapidly in your body. the cells that create your hair, for example, which is why people may lose hair, because cells inside your your intestines divide very rapidly, which is why people often get sick. they feel nauseated when they take chemotherapy, but that's not all chemotherapies. we don't know which ones we don't again, i'm repeating myself. don't know which cancer or what stage, so it's very hard to speculate what this chemotherapy would do to her how often she'll needed, how long she'll need it. maybe we'll get more of those details forthcoming >> and max foster, if you're still with it's just remind us when kate was in the hospital at the same time that king charles was in the hospital. >> at what stage >> did he announce that he was being treated, i believe was for prostate cancer sure and obviously, kate has made the point that when prior to the surgery, they did not believe that there was cancer present prior to the abdominal surgery that she said she had yeah. >> there's there's no sign that it was cancer before they went in. it was it's exactly strangely the same situation. so they both funding to hospital tests were done in hospital and they discover cancer afterwards. so it was after she left hospital, as i understand it, but wait to confirm that. i don't think that can be heard when she was in hospital. so this major abdominal surgery and then finding out so that's how we understand the process works. they are not going to give us any more information. they are not going to reveal the type of cancer but they all going to give updates when there are updates to give, we've had this before, haven't we understand that? this is as far as they're going to go for now in terms of information and she will appear, i think at some point, we were expecting to see at easter services next weekend. that's not gonna happen i'm told. but there will be appearances and people would be following. incredible closer. i'm told she isn't good spirits. anderson so that's positive, but i'm really getting the impression the priority hasn't actually been heard. strangely, it's been the kids. it's been such a shock for the couple and then trying to get the kids to understand young kids and for them not to receive any of the news about that whilst they're at school. so they broke up today and they're now able to get together properly as a family. and they really want to get back to normality. so this is why the calling for this privacy. they want to carry on with their normal lives. they don't want people filming them. they're actually asking all the meter organizations not to share any of that footage. so there's a huge amount of interests, but we now know why we hadn't seen so long. >> yeah. >> well, also, i mean, there's poor kids to receive that kind of information about apparent it is a terrifying for children dr. jonathan reiner is also joining us. dr. reiner would stands out to you from this announcement a lot of the pieces. now we're >> starting to fall into place. what we learned in january was that the prince princess had a rigorous operation that required about a two-week a hospital stay and we were told at the time that she had abdominal surgery, so one of the kinds of things that can keep you in the hospital for up to two weeks after abdominal surgery and that would be operations that include extensive resection of the colon. for instance and while we don't know precisely the exact form of cancer colorectal cancer is the third most common form of cancer in the world. and we're seeing it more frequently in young people and people under the age of 50 so it sounds like she had surgery surgery required an extensive hospitalization two weeks in the hospital is quite long. >> and now she's getting >> as sanjay said, adjuvant chemotherapy, which suggests that they are concerned about how well the cancer was contained. and when when tissue is removed. in kansas surgery what pathology looks for? are the so-called margins they look to see if the cancer is seems to be contained in the tissue or is there an invasion of the veins or blood vessels or the, or the chiefs that surround nerves or into the surrounding tissues and lymph nodes. >> and when they are unsure >> that all of the cancer was contained in the resected or removed specimen. that's when patients will typically get risk adjuvant chemo to try and clean up any cells that may have already spread beyond the primary primary lesion. and that's what they're doing now >> so dr. ryan and pardon my ignorance on this. if somebody has surgery and then the cancer is discovered after that surgery, is it because tissues tissue from whatever the area of the surgery, in this case the abdomen would be taken out and tested or would it be is it possible that it would be cancer somewhere else in the body that would somehow show up in a blood test or something? >> with all respect to the royal family, that kind of press release doesn't make a lot of medical sense. when people undergo extensive surgery, they they just don't go in for typically anymore >> for >> quote, exploratory surgery. all of these surge, all these operations are preceded by extensive imaging like cat scans and mris. so the surgical team would have a very good understanding of what was likely to be the problem that would be confirmed by pathology. so a piece of the tissue removed, whatever the oregon is the oregon rude or intestine, for instance, that goes directly to the pathology lab. often during the surgery sometimes whether something has cancer or not will dictate the extent of the actual operations. so it's very likely that the surgical team knew or had a good sense of what this was going to be prior to surgery. and that was confirmed at the time of pathologic testing during the operation. so this is something that would at least been suspected before and confirmed during the operation and we talked to sanjay about this a little bit, but just in terms of the course of chemotherapy, again, we don't know exactly there's no official statement on what form of cancer this is do you have a sense of is there any way to know how long of course of chemotherapy might be if you don't know the cancer and you don't know the status not only not only would it depend on the particular type of cancer discovered, we'd also >> likely depend on the extent of spread and that would potentially dictate the duration or even perhaps the intensity of this adjuvant chemotherapy. so it's impossible to know how long or how intense she'll be treated without knowing the specifics of the disease >> cancer has been found in younger people more frequently now we don't know that she has colorectal that'll cancer. but about 10% of of of new cases of colorectal cancer are being found now in people under the age of 50 why would i applaud? >> people think that in part it has to do with our diet, our diets have changed over the last several decades. heavy in red meat. some people think that diets heavy in sugary beverages in children and adolescents change the risk profile for colon cancer, but it's, but it's about 10% as i think i said, of the colon cancers diagnosed are being found in younger in young people which is why a few years ago, the american cancer society >> and then more >> recently the united states preventative task force. lower the minimum age. this the suggested youngest age for a screening for colon cancer from 50 down to 45, and even younger down to 40. if there's a family history of colon cancer in a first-degree relative and they did that because they estimated that the yield in terms of preventing death would be magnified by starting to screen younger population because we were seeing colon cancer in younger and younger people >> dr. jonathan ryan. i appreciate your time. i want to check in with anna stewart and, uh, one of the particularly disturbing things that we have witnessed over the last week or so, i think with several days ago, we learned word that there had been a reported attempt to a breach of the princesses medical file at i believe at the hospital where she were she had been treated. what do we know? first of all, about the status of that breach and i guess the question is, was was that sort of also part of the reason that this announcement was made? now, the idea that there may have been people out there who had gained access to are still we're trying to gain access to her medical records yeah. >> i'm what we know is up to three people are being investigated and have been suspended from the london clinic hospital regarding that attempt to data breach. and what we don't know actually is whether that breach of princess kate private medical records was actually successful. so we don't know that at this stage, but that just goes to show really intrigued peak and the speculation and a huge amount of pressure on the royal family to give the public more information than they frankly, perhaps should have ever have had or deserved. and just hearing what we heard today from the princess of wales, how it's been a huge shock it has been a tough couple of months. she has been off work, but nine weeks she's had major abdominal surgery and perhaps the most heartbreaking part of it all in that video message, just what this will mean for her children and having to explain that to them. so really, after weeks of speculation and pressure from the media, from social media, the message here is incredible to be clear at the end, they say, we hope that you will understand that as a family. we now need some time, space and privacy while i complete my treatment, they've given us a lot more medical information than we often get when it comes to the royal family. much like king charles, we know that, of course that she has cancer. we don't know the exact details, but this is all the information that i would expect. we will get for some time to try and draw a line under that huge pressure that we have seen in recent weeks >> i want to check in with trish goddard, host of the week with tricia goddard. tricia guard goddard trisha >> it's >> obviously i mean, this is stunning news for so many people around the world and obviously so many people's thoughts and prayers are with princess catherine at this time >> does this >> do you think people will respect in particularly the people have been focusing on her lack of of of not being out there in front of cameras didn't people will respect this well, i understand. >> i can give you a very intimate point of view as you know, you and i have worked together. i all of that time the last 19 months, i2 have been going through cancer treatment. that's my hair. >> so >> i know all about it. i know about the treatment. i know you can work you can king charles is done through chemotherapy. it depends on what kind of chemotherapy you can have it at home and so this strikes a particular chord with me as to keeping it quiet. >> i did. i absolutely yeah understand why princess kate would you kind of get judged? you get unwanted approaches and all that sort sort of thing. so i hope people around the world will respect her. i came out, i just did a magazine piece. i the mount about it to ask people to respect and say, look, i've been going through this, i've still been able to work, but understanding it and talking to children about it. all of those things, i'm also involved with mental health and children the same one are the same organism station that prince has catherine is involved with home start in the uk, which is about children. so i totally understand that. i hope people will give her room as they have been king charles. >> i hope the >> press backs the hell off because that is been one of the most difficult things anybody in the public eye. and i'm nothing compared to press gate. it's always very difficult and on older anson, can i just say the discussion that you've had and that we've had in previous times and cnn is very respectful because i think we've got watch and the princess will i hope watch the language that's used some newspapers have referred to king charles continuously as cancer stricken king charles. and i do hope the press won't talk about catherine in the same way. language is very important to children language is very important to the millions of us living with cancer working with cancer, being productive, we cancer. but sadly, cancer is a very much of an everyday point of part of life now, for me cleans of us, it's sad. >> but >> i my heart goes out to her and every other cancer sufferer were also trish, i mean, you again, come back to the children at their ages i had a father who battled heart disease ultimately died when i was ten. i certainly understand the horror and the terror a child feels when a parent they suddenly see a parent in this way and here from the parent, what is going on, it's such a difficult conversation for a parent to have where the child it certainly isn't. it doesn't matter what age they are. i've had to have those conversations with my kids and one's a health professional. it is an and also making children not fearful of the future not fearful things like christmases and prince louis birthday it's coming up >> there >> are ways to talk about it in an age appropriate way >> it is >> enormously difficult as you say, anderson as well. remember, william lost his mother, albeit in very different circumstances. >> but the fear of losing a mom at any age actually is terrifying so that's another reason i come back to the language and the sun and i'm sure you'll agree with me. >> sorry. i've got the world and this everybody ringing me because of this because they know i've been very, very public about the language that we use when talking about cancer >> and >> how important it is that we in the media are aware of that, that we're working with people alongside people who may well have had. this is triggering and i'm sure it really triggering for you to anderson. i know where journalists and we're reporters well, but when you hear someone like king charles all the princess is going through this for many, many of us, for many, many children, it brings up some very scary images which is, as i say, come back to that point about why we need to watch the language that we use >> well, it's also extraordinary when you think about a tricia in past times. i mean prince prince william and prince harry have both been very public about the silence that surrendered their mother's death within the family that people didn't really know what to say to them. it wasn't spoken about initially after the their father came and told them she'd been killed they there was a lot of silence surrounding it and the families feeling was just let's let's keep things being normal, so to speak, and try to help them just get over it >> her >> approach certainly seems to be i mean, i think the her generation and certainly with prince william involved, they have probably learned from that in terms of how to deal with their kids oh, gosh absolutely. absolutely and anderson, again, i know because you do a podcast about grief grief starts right from the beginning of any cancer diagnosis. and as a parent, kids can read things like that. they can read worry if you don't talk to them about it, it seems even worse. it seems even scarier grief is something it's about fear of loss of the future will mummy be around for your birthday, christmas is and what have you and we have learned and as you rightly say, king william let's learn. it's going to be interesting about how, how prince harry and his family reacts to this as well. and i do hope that the press don't go the british press don't go after him because it's triggering and it affects everybody in when you've got to family remember, three remember fergie as well sarah ferguson has had her own cancer. >> so you've got three royal family members talking about cancer it's a scary conversation for all the children involved and you are so so right. you have to be open with children about what mummy scared, why mommy's going to the hospital, why grandpas going to the hospital all the time you do have to be very open because as you so rightfully say, if people just tried to sweeping under them a carpet, it's becomes >> or updates, max, understand you're hearing some new information. >> yeah. and it all >> ties in from what >> tissue trisha was >> saying that you've got to >> remember that george is just >> ten. charlotte's >> eight louis is just five then making the point my sources anyway, that they wanted the prince and princess wanted to shield the kids from the coverage in the news, which is why they waited until this point until they were out of school. because obviously in school or the kids will be talking about what's on the news. so that's why they waited until this point, anytime as much detail as we're going to get. frankly, on the medical conditions reiterated to me, we're not going to be told what type of cancer it is. they don't want people to speculate because that's going to create more confusion. they said in terms of the stage of cancer they're not going to give any more medical information and they are concerned about breaches of privacy. this is coming into a lot of what i'm hearing from the palace right now and she's in the record. cos of preventive chemotherapy that cited in late february. and they are is continuing, but they're not telling us until when so i mean, sanjay can speak to that. i'm not sure what that means. and we're not being told where she's being treated, but we are being asked not to try to track. she's going to be going for treatment regularly. she's on chemo so we're going to see some movements, but they're asking us not to share those pictures right now because they want her to be able to recover and she's this. normality for the kids she's trying to create the next it's interesting that that kid made the point that she will try to continue working tried to continue to do public events so the priority isn't a public role, but i haven't taught you it's going to >> she may turn up at events we shouldn't interpret that as hur going back to work, it's not going to be a full schedule. i think it's gonna be last-minute moments if there's a family event or there's a service, something that she thinks is important. she may turn up to it, but i think it's going to be a last-minute decision. her priority is obviously the treatment and the recovery but now we're into the easter holidays. it's about creating some regularity for the children. so i don't know if that means they're going away on holiday they or that they just going to stay at home and take daily outings and just work together as a family william will be carrying on with his public duties. so i think we can read into that that she stable enough at home for him to carry on with his public duties. the pressure on the monarchy right now is absolutely immense. the queen has really stepped up in recent time, she went on a visit to northern ireland just this week. major constitutional events and she was representing the king there. the king obviously isn't carrying out public engagements. k is going to be doing it for some time. william is gonna do what he can. but the top four royals are pretty much out of action. this is a real amount of pressure on ma'am, so i think you're going to see edward and sophie stepping up a lot more. also, a lot of pressure on princess anne right now >> maxval continue to check in with you, one bringing a richard quest richard, i mean, again, this is just terrible news and very sad for the family. and obviously the graded interests to people around the world who are concerned about about her. where do you see this going from here >> i think there'll be two distinct tracks here, if you will, within the united kingdom, i think the, the, the sort of the mainstream media have you will win all follow the rules. there'll be no going after her. there'll be no sharing pictures if pictures are taken elsewhere, they won't be shown her privacy will be respected. but of course it is a democracy freedom of speech, freedom of the press. and so there will be pictures. in fact, the pictures we've seen from us so far have usually been paparazzi, orangey, and members of the public who published them. and that's going to be the bigger problem. i think it's when the paparazzi decided to try and with with vigorous determination, decide to get pictures of in any shape, form, or description and how those are then use who buys them, who shows them, who gives oxygen if you well to these rogue photographs that are taken. and the second thing of course, from the princesses point of view, as much taken with watch her last line of her statement under said she says, i'm also thinking of all of those whose lives have been affected by cancer for everyone facing this, do not lose faith or hope so very similar to the king when he gave out his diagnosis. and suddenly the number of menn go prostate cancer deaths went up enormously so she has got this jewel. well, the primary responsibility and role of course, is to have and her health as she said, but she will be very aware of the need to also for other people to be seen as in a sense, as a role model for how one handles such awfulness in such a public arena in a richard stay with us. i just want to play for viewers who are just joining us because there was at the top of the hour 02:00 that the announcement was made. a video was released by kensington palace. i just want to play that video again, it's about two minutes and then we'll talk about it afterward >> i wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you personally for all the wonderful messages of support and for your understanding. whilst i've been recovering from surgery it has been an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family but i've had a fantastic medical team who've taken great care of me for which i'm so grateful. in january, i underwent major domino surgery in london. and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous the surgery was successful. however, tests after the operation pan shock. and william and i have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of my young family as you can imagine, this has taken time. it has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment but most importantly, it is taken as time to explain everything to george charlotte and louis in a way that's appropriate for them. and to reassure them that i'm going to be okay as i've said to them, i am well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal. in my mind, body, and spirit having william by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance to as, as the love, support, and kindness that is being shown by so many of you. it means so much trust both we hope that you'll understand that as a family. we now need some time space and privacy. while i complete my treatment my work has always bought me a deep sense of joy. and i look forward to being back when i'm able. but for now, i must focus on making a full recovery. at this time i'm also thinking of all those whose lives have been affected by cancer for everyone facing this disease, in whatever form, please do not lose faith or hope you are not alone. >> i'm back now. with our richard quest at, you know, you think back to prior generations, this is not something we would have ever heard from a member of the royal family in the past oh, no. >> no, no, no, no, not at all. you've got the very barest of details and they just present just as a bid. and you never heard from them again, in a sense. but that doesn't cut it. cut it today. you have to look at the the unspoken social contract, the spoken constitutional contract between monarchy and the people is that they serve the people's pleasure in a sense. and therefore, there are duties and responsibilities and which come into conflict when something extremely personal like this takes place. and it's that balancing act anderson, that is good. thank you define how this moves forward in a public sense, obviously, the medical sense and her family is the priority in that way, i was one thing. i was very interested in. what you're talking to dr. jonathan rhino about the way this had moved forward. now, when she initially went in for surgery as the dog good. dr. said they had a pretty good idea that something was amiss if you think about the number of weeks that we have been kept, arms length in a sense, from that sort of information. and it's arguable. we'd never have found out anymore if it hadn't been cancerous. and the public, what hi does the public have to know in what circumstances about her condition, her treatment, the truth is very little until it affects our own sort of way of life on our own constitution. at the moment. that's not in you're just joining us, we learned at the top of this hour around 02:00 p.m. on the east coast that kate middleton, the princess of wales, announcing in a two minute or so video that she has been diagnosed with cancer. she had gone in as you know, in january for major what she called me sure abdominal surgery she said then that they did not believe it was cancerous prior to the surgery then they found that cancer had been present. she said in a february, she began late february. we believe she began chemotherapy the kate middleton, the princess of wales, nor the anyone had the palace have not, they have not said exactly what kind of cancer this is, nor will they >> be saying that according to our max foster, they do not plan to be giving any more details and they asked for privacy as she undergo continues to undergo this chemotherapy. i want to check in with their max foster. i'm actually i know you've been sort of monitoring not only any information coming out from the palace, from the royal family, but also just reaction in the united kingdom and elsewhere. what are you hearing? >> well i think there's a real shock as we've been faulting quite extensively. there's been so little information about why we haven't seen the princess and this was despite all that speculation out of it out there and a lot of it really distasteful, obviously none of them were talking about this sort of scenario. so genuine shock, i mean, just people around the palace absolutely horrified by what they've heard and the heart's going out to the family in particular, to kate. so as in sam at the five members of the family are in windsor that was filmed in windsor they williams been looking after the kids that they weren't a lot of the privacy wasn't related to the school term, and they didn't want their kids seeing the news or other kids seeing the news and discussing it with the kids at school. so i think now is a real family moment because they know it's exploding on global news media. so the five of them a hunkering down, they were expecting this to happen. there the big mental health campaigners they would have very carefully thought about how to present this to the kids in the first place. and then for them to deal with the onslaught of media coverage. i imagined they have not got the tv on there, just trying to have a normal family time tonight so bolts of them really at this time, also thoughts for the rest of the royal family and a lot of people out there who've just been really, genuinely worried about her and looking ahead to the future, the monarchy, it's taken a huge dent they know that she's very beautiful she's even said she's going to try and get out as much as she can. but this is a senior member of royalty who isn't going to be there for the public right now. and with the king looking pretty vulnerable as well, also with cancer treatment, i think is pretty unsettling time to people here in the uk when the monarch is meant to represent spin ability, continuity. >> and max also unsettling for for catherine and also the opposite of the royal family, the privacy breach, the attempted according to authorities, there an attempt to find out medical records among hospital staff. what is the status of that? and did that i mean, are you hearing anything about whether that sort of played a role in the timing of this announcement? >> i didn't play any role in the timing they stuck to their plant. i mean, if you look at what they've done this that's about land throughout this they've only done what they said they were going to do in terms of media coverage and statements and all of a social media post that they've been putting out there. so the current status of the hospital is that according to our affiliate sources, itv, three members of staff try to get into her digital records at the hospital, tries to see her medical records and there's an investigation in the hospital. and the data commissioner is also looking at that. the police aren't yet involved, but that does suggest that that information wasn't ultimately leaked, but they did try to access it. it does speak to all of the conspiracy and all the coverage here because why would people be trying to get hold of that information? i think the general consensus is that it would have been leaked to the media and they tried to sell that story. it would have been worth a huge amount of money so it all speaks to the same thing. the fact that so many i don't know what to call them. the people out there who are promoting these conspiracy theories trying to get information, trying to make money, frankly, from clicks and views on social media this is the pressure that then are facing and i can't think of another story with a speculation is bloated so much in the course has been criticism of the palace for not giving enough information and allowing those conspiracy theories to bubble up. but they've now explain why that was. and it was simply to try to get their heads around it and to protect the kids >> maxwell check-in with you shortly, sheehan and royal historian kate williams that joins us. kate, you and i have talked about this royal family in happy times and sad. this is certainly a sad occasion. it's also, as i talked about earlier, this our a really an unprecedented level of candor for any member of the royal family yes. >> on doesn't as you say, there's is a huge shock that kate was saying it was a huge shock. i think it's a huge shock for people watching. it's a huge shock for britain across the world. kate middleton has been the princess of wales, has been on the front page of so many newspapers. all these social media trending just as max was talking about. and kate has colored cloud and given this really intimate, really beautiful video in the gardens and windsor castle those daffodils behind her and really being so and preston to the open as she say, she was talking about cancer, she said exactly when the cancer was discovered was discovered, and she talked about starting chemotherapy. so she's really has this openness is what we haven't seen from the royal family before. the kick the queen's father, george the sixth, we knew nothing, even the queen herself as princess didn't know he was l, so she went off to kenya. we simply aren't told this and i think we are moving into a new royal world. it's totally unprecedented. the king was opened, caters open, and i think it really makes us think about the royal family. we can't always imagine they're super humans going on forever, never even getting a cold or even a major illness like this. they are human too. and this is all bought at home to us. i think in terms of what the next steps are, how does, what does history tell us about how >> royal families deal with something like this? >> well, in the past and just involve families have really told us nothing and it was in the tudor times, it was treason to suggest that the monic might be ill. so we are in new uncharted modern waters. and i think it's great that caters come out there and spoken. she's obviously going through so much. it's really tough, but i think so people are really feeling a lot of sympathy for her because she has been trending. people have been all this armchair detective about where is she, where isn't she? and i think people are now thinking twice about a lot of all that. whereas kate's social media stuff hashtags, because the truth was that she wasn't on a beach and she wasn't here or there where she was when she was at home going through this really tough time my name is really tough times as a woman and a really tough times as a mother to think about the children and we just think about prince william here, like prince harry, i mean, they had such a tough childhood, they lost princess diana at a young age. it must be so painful for william to have both his father and his wife suffering from this really tough disease. of course, many of us hello, from cancer and lip go on to live fantastic, fabulous lives. but it also is quite terrifying to hear it. and i think i think a lot of people across the world and we listening to this now, and really thinking about, i think, i think a lot of support for cat, for kate, and i think how requests for privacy are going to be respected. but i do think that we will have more openness going forward. hordes, perhaps when kate has finished a chemotherapy, perhaps as an engagement with the charity connected with a cancer that she's had, she may come out and give us more details about the cancer that she's had. but at the moment, we've been asked not to speculate, not to ask about it, but i think that eventually we will be told and i think because like the king shall hope that by telling people more people well, get checked and because early, early caching of cancer is so important >> i appreciate your time. i want to check when dr. otis brawley, a professor of oncology and epidemiology at johns hopkins university dr. bala. yeah. you've assumed heard what catherine has said. i'm wondering what stands out to you from a medical standpoint? she said she she had this major abdominal surgery in january. it was in late february, started chemotherapy that the cancer that initially when she wanted for the surgery, they did not believe that there was cancer. she says she found out later that there was yeah. >> this is we of course all hope the best for this poor woman who has to go through this in a very public way this does happen. you can have, for example, and ovarian cyst or a problem with the ovary that leads to lung abdominal surgery then the pathologist a day or two or three after the surgery while examining the specimen, finds out that there actually was a cancer. there that happens. we also sometimes see it with colon cancer. we then very frequently will give people what we call ageing thank chemotherapy. that's a person where there's no evidence that they have disease left in their body, but there's still the possibility we give them adjuvant chemotherapy to try to clean up what might be there that's so small, we can't see the prognosis can still be very good. i think that's something all of us have to keep in mind and have to hope we have people who have colon cancer or ovarian cancer, other cancers who, who do very well i appreciate your time. we have some breaking news that i want to get to a breaking news out of russia state media, their reports have group of at least three armed man opened fire inside a concert hall in the moscow region. we're just learning about this. it happened inside crocus did he hall where music group was about to perform video from nearby shows. a large plume of smoke and flames billowing from the building as the building appears to be engulfed in fire, you see the images there cnn's fwrite fread plankton joins us now fred, what more are you learning about this shooting >> i anderson well, this is something that happened in the very late hours of today and you're absolutely right. it happened in a place called cross. know gore's, which is really a suburb of moscow. i've been there many times myself and it happened in the korocha city hall, which is a large shopping and entertainment complex. now, apparently three of these gunman entered into that building, into the cocoa city hall and started opening fire and the latest that we have from the emergency first responders on the ground and from russian state media as well, is they say that there are casualties. they're still trying to clarify what exactly is going on. what we don't have yet from the russians is whether or not they know who the possible gunman are, that they know, or whether they're not they know whether or not these gunman have been neutralized by an or have been stopped yet. that's something that the authorities have not said yet. but by all accounts, anderson, from what we're seeing on some of the videos that we're showing right now now. and also getting from the authorities. this does appear to be a fairly large attack. you're absolutely right to point out that there is video coming out of that building on fire, which again is a huge complex. we were also getting word from the local authorities telling us that there are at least 50 ambulances on the scene to tend to people who might be wounded. so clearly this is already as far as the russians are concerned, a mass casualty event. they also say that they've set up a headquarters there and that they're pulling together all possible emergency response units. and of course, also security units as well to deal with that situation. again, right now, it's unclear whether or not these gunman might it's still be at large. it's unclear whether it is only those three that we're hearing about in these initial reports or whether it's more than that. but certainly some of the videos that we've been seeing from the scene indicate that this was definitely a very difficult and an event for the people who were in that, that must have been extremely traumatizing as well. you hear gunshots that are ringing out on some of these videos that are coming out. and a lot of people who are trying to take cover right now, not clear whether or not this is over yet, whether or not the authorities are trying to create some sort of ring around that area. but definitely the russian authorities are saying that they're taking in this extremely serious and certainly this does seem to be a large event that's taking place right on the outskirts of moscow, anderson. >> all right. fred, we're going to continue to check back with you over the course of this next hour. we're gonna be right back after a quick break much more head on a breaking diagnosed with cancer. it was discovered after she went into surgery in january, the tests that were carried out in that surgery reveal the cancer. we're not going to be told what type of cancer it is. >> but >> again, to let take herself speak to you in her own words i wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you personally for all the wonderful messages of support and for your understanding maasai being recovering from surgery it is been an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family but i've had a fantastic medical team who've taken great care of me for which i'm so grateful. in january ion de major domino surgery in london. and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous the surgery was successful however, tests after the operation pan cancer had been present my medical team therefore, advice that i should undergo a course of preventive chemotherapy and i'm now in the early stages of that treatment this of course came as a huge shock. and william and i have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of my young family as you can imagine, this has taken time. it has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment but most importantly, it is taken as time to explain everything to george charlotte and louis in a way that's appropriate for them. and to reassure them that i'm going to be okay as i've said to them, i am well and getting stronger every day. bye focusing on the things that will help me here in my mind, body, and spirit having william by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance to as is the love, support, and kindness that has been shown by so many of you it means so much trust both we hope that you'll understand that as a family. we now need some time space and privacy. while i complete my treatment my work has always bought me a deep sense of joy. and i look forward to being back when i move on. but for now, i must focus on making a full recovery at this time. >> i'm also >> thinking of all those whose lives have been affected by cancer for everyone facing this disease, in whatever form please do not lose faith or hope you are not alone >> it's a very powerful message, isn't it does explain, doesn't it? but the reason why we haven't seen her she needed time to recover from what we now know is major abdominal surgery she and her family at the time to decompress. she needed to start treatment. she started chemo in february and they wanted to wait until now because the kids broke up from school. today. so hopefully, all these people making all those speculative comments now have their answer >> no it explained that was recorded at kensington palace. that is where they currently reside. is it not? >> well the, currently in windsor, their offices in kensington palace so they one of the things i'm being told is that we have to respect our privacy at this point this point, the kids start school holiday, she thinks it's really important to keep a regular routine. she will be out on about she doesn't want people taking photos. i'll first wants people to give them time and so they wanted to be transparent as possible, but they needed to put the kids first and it's been a huge amount to take on the also this chemo is going to last a while. the recovery is going to last a while. we're not going to see her for a while. >> she >> may choose to appear events, but she's not going to be coming back to work full time for it anytime soon. i'm told anderson >> right. and actually, if you can stand by, i want to bring in dr. sanjay gupta for just as much medical advice as we can and information we can get on this sanjay. she says that in january it was major abdominal surgery that she had he'd been told by doctors they they did not believe it was cancerous before the surgery was after the surgery, they found cancer was president she said she needed a time to recover from the major surgery in order to start treatment, can you talk a little bit about from a medical standpoint what stands out to you? >> yeah i mean i think the timeline that you just laid out is really interesting and important. i mean, that was a very touching statement. obviously, but we still don't know what kind of cancer this is as max mentioned, we don't know what stage this is, but january 16 does when we were told she was going in for surgery the next day we were told that she's probably going to have a somewhat prolonged hospitalization and it was almost two weeks, 13 days later that she was discharged. that was end of january. and then it was end of february where we now understand she started this chemotherapy and obviously we're hearing about this three weeks later for all the reasons she mentioned. one thing, they they use this current preventive chemotherapy in the statement which i think is a very non-medical term. i mean, you don't give chemotherapy preventively she has cancer. we don't know what kind of cancer it is. and this is typically something that's referred to as adjuvant chemotherapy, meaning something alongside the surgery. now that's being given but what stands out to me is that it's very touching, but we don't know the cancer, we don't know the staging. we did not hear anything from the medical team saying, hey, look, we expect a full recovery. she obviously that but it's there's there's a lot of questions i think that's still remain need to be answered. i think in some some way >> and so just talk a little bit about chemotherapy again, we don't know what type of cancer is or how it right. but what is sort of in general, how does chemotherapy work? does someone have to go to a hospital for that could is that something that can be done privately at their residence? what sort of effect does it have >> yeah. i mean, there's these are medications that are typically given the bloodstream. sometimes they can be given as a pill orally if it's given in the bloodstream, then skip a do typically go to the hospital. of course, we're talking about the royal families. so i think anything probably as possible for the royal family in terms of doing it more privately but as mac said, it can be several weeks of these therapies and that they're designed like the basic notion is we did the operation. now we find cancer. there's likely to be some cancer that is remaining in the body. let's give chemotherapy to try and target those remaining cells that's the basic idea behind chemo. but i almost can't say anything more than that because we don't know what kind of cancer we don't know what stage we don't know what the chemotherapy is. and we don't know even what type, meaning which he need to be. even an outpatient setting in the hospital and just in terms of how arduous is it between i mean, i know people who've had chemotherapy and it's incredibly >> debilitating, is that always the case >> now, not necessarily always the case. and there are some that are far more debilitating than others and i wanted to just really careful because again, we don't there's so many things we don't know, but one of the things that you think about with cancer cells is that they divide very rapidly. okay? so you're targeting cells that are dividing very rapidly. that's what chemotherapy does. >> what >> other cells divide very rapidly in your body. the cells that create your hair, for example, which is why people may lose hair, because cells inside your your intestines divide very rapidly, which is why people often get sick. they feel nauseated when they take chemotherapy, but that's not all chemotherapies. we don't know which ones we don't again, i'm repeating myself. don't know which cancer or what stage, so it's very hard to speculate what this chemotherapy would do to her how often she'll needed, how long she'll need it. maybe we'll get more of those details forthcoming >> and max foster, if you're still with it's just remind us when kate was in the hospital at the same time that king charles was in the hospital. >> at what stage >> did he announce that he was being treated, i believe was for prostate cancer sure and obviously, kate has made the point that when prior to the surgery, they did not believe that there was cancer present prior to the abdominal surgery that she said she had yeah. >> there's there's no sign that it was cancer before they went in. it was it's exactly strangely the same situation. so they both funding to hospital tests were done in hospital and they discover cancer afterwards. so it was after she left hospital, as i understand it, but wait to confirm that. i don't think that can be heard when she was in hospital. so this major abdominal surgery and then finding out so that's how we understand the process works. they are not going to give us any more information. they are not going to reveal the type of cancer but they all going to give updates when there are updates to give, we've had this before, haven't we understand that? this is as far as they're going to go for now in terms of information and she will appear, i think at some point, we were expecting to see at easter services next weekend. that's not gonna happen i'm told. but there will be appearances and people would be following. incredible closer. i'm told she isn't good spirits. anderson so that's positive, but i'm really getting the impression the priority hasn't actually been heard. strangely, it's been the kids. it's been such a shock for the couple and then trying to get the kids to understand young kids and for them not to receive any of the news about that whilst they're at school. so they broke up today and they're now able to get together properly as a family. and they really want to get back to normality. so this is why the calling for this privacy. they want to carry on with their normal lives. they don't want people filming them. they're actually asking all the meter organizations not to share any of that footage. so there's a huge amount of interests, but we now know why we hadn't seen so long. >> yeah. >> well, also, i mean, there's poor kids to receive that kind of information about apparent it is a terrifying for children dr. jonathan reiner is also joining us. dr. reiner would stands out to you from this announcement a lot of the pieces. now we're >> starting to fall into place. what we learned in january was that the prince princess had a rigorous operation that required about a two-week a hospital stay and we were told at the time that she had abdominal surgery, so one of the kinds of things that can keep you in the hospital for up to two weeks after abdominal surgery and that would be operations that include extensive resection of the colon. for instance and while we don't know precisely the exact form of cancer colorectal cancer is the third most common form of cancer in the world. and we're seeing it more frequently in young people and people under the age of 50 so it sounds like she had surgery surgery required an extensive hospitalization two weeks in the hospital is quite long. >> and now she's getting >> as sanjay said, adjuvant chemotherapy, which suggests that they are concerned about how well the cancer was contained. and when when tissue is removed. in kansas surgery what pathology looks for? are the so-called margins they look to see if the cancer is seems to be contained in the tissue or is there an invasion of the veins or blood vessels or the, or the chiefs that surround nerves or into the surrounding tissues and lymph nodes. >> and when they are unsure >> that all of the cancer was contained in the resected or removed specimen. that's when patients will typically get risk adjuvant chemo to try and clean up any cells that may have already spread beyond the primary primary lesion. and that's what they're doing now >> so dr. ryan and pardon my ignorance on this. if somebody has surgery and then the cancer is discovered after that surgery, is it because tissues tissue from whatever the area of the surgery, in this case the abdomen would be taken out and tested or would it be is it possible that it would be cancer somewhere else in the body that would somehow show up in a blood test or something? >> with all respect to the royal family, that kind of press release doesn't make a lot of medical sense. when people undergo extensive surgery, they they just don't go in for typically anymore >> for >> quote, exploratory surgery. all of these surge, all these operations are preceded by extensive imaging like cat scans and mris. so the surgical team would have a very good understanding of what was likely to be the problem that would be confirmed by pathology. so a piece of the tissue removed, whatever the oregon is the oregon rude or intestine, for instance, that goes directly to the pathology lab. often during the surgery sometimes whether something has cancer or not will dictate the extent of the actual operations. so it's very likely that the surgical team knew or had a good sense of what this was going to be prior to surgery. and that was confirmed at the time of pathologic testing during the operation. so this is something that would at least been suspected before and confirmed during the operation and we talked to sanjay about this a little bit, but just in terms of the course of chemotherapy, again, we don't know exactly there's no official statement on what form of cancer this is do you have a sense of is there any way to know how long of course of chemotherapy might be if you don't know the cancer and you don't know the status not only not only would it depend on the particular type of cancer discovered, we'd also >> likely depend on the extent of spread and that would potentially dictate the duration or even perhaps the intensity of this adjuvant chemotherapy. so it's impossible to know how long or how intense she'll be treated without knowing the specifics of the disease >> cancer has been found in younger people more frequently now we don't know that she has colorectal that'll cancer. but about 10% of of of new cases of colorectal cancer are being found now in people under the age of 50 why would i applaud? >> people think that in part it has to do with our diet, our diets have changed over the last several decades. heavy in red meat. some people think that diets heavy in sugary beverages in children and adolescents change the risk profile for colon cancer, but it's, but it's about 10% as i think i said, of the colon cancers diagnosed are being found in younger in young people which is why a few years ago, the american cancer society >> and then more >> recently the united states preventative task force. lower the minimum age. this the suggested youngest age for a screening for colon cancer from 50 down to 45, and even younger down to 40. if there's a family history of colon cancer in a first-degree relative and they did that because they estimated that the yield in terms of preventing death would be magnified by starting to screen younger population because we were seeing colon cancer in younger and younger people >> dr. jonathan ryan. i appreciate your time. i want to check in with anna stewart and, uh, one of the particularly disturbing things that we have witnessed over the last week or so, i think with several days ago, we learned word that there had been a reported attempt to a breach of the princesses medical file at i believe at the hospital where she were she had been treated. what do we know? first of all, about the status of that breach and i guess the question is, was was that sort of also part of the reason that this announcement was made? now, the idea that there may have been people out there who had gained access to are still we're trying to gain access to her medical records yeah. >> i'm what we know is up to three people are being investigated and have been suspended from the london clinic hospital regarding that attempt to data breach. and what we don't know actually is whether that breach of princess kate private medical records was actually successful. so we don't know that at this stage, but that just goes to show really intrigued peak and the speculation and a huge amount of pressure on the royal family to give the public more information than they frankly, perhaps should have ever have had or deserved. and just hearing what we heard today from the princess of wales, how it's been a huge shock it has been a tough couple of months. she has been off work, but nine weeks she's had major abdominal surgery and perhaps the most heartbreaking part of it all in that video message, just what this will mean for her children and having to explain that to them. so really, after weeks of speculation and pressure from the media, from social media, the message here is incredible to be clear at the end, they say, we hope that you will understand that as a family. we now need some time, space and privacy while i complete my treatment, they've given us a lot more medical information than we often get when it comes to the royal family. much like king charles, we know that, of course that she has cancer. we don't know the exact details, but this is all the information that i would expect. we will get for some time to try and draw a line under that huge pressure that we have seen in recent weeks >> i want to check in with trish goddard, host of the week with tricia goddard. tricia guard goddard trisha >> it's >> obviously i mean, this is stunning news for so many people around the world and obviously so many people's thoughts and prayers are with princess catherine at this time >> does this >> do you think people will respect in particularly the people have been focusing on her lack of of of not being out there in front of cameras didn't people will respect this well, i understand. >> i can give you a very intimate point of view as you know, you and i have worked together. i all of that time the last 19 months, i2 have been going through cancer treatment. that's my hair. >> so >> i know all about it. i know about the treatment. i know you can work you can king charles is done through chemotherapy. it depends on what kind of chemotherapy you can have it at home and so this strikes a particular chord with me as to keeping it quiet. >> i did. i absolutely yeah understand why princess kate would you kind of get judged? you get unwanted approaches and all that sort sort of thing. so i hope people around the world will respect her. i came out, i just did a magazine piece. i the mount about it to ask people to respect and say, look, i've been going through this, i've still been able to work, but understanding it and talking to children about it. all of those things, i'm also involved with mental health and children the same one are the same organism station that prince has catherine is involved with home start in the uk, which is about children. so i totally understand that. i hope people will give her room as they have been king charles. >> i hope the >> press backs the hell off because that is been one of the most difficult things anybody in the public eye. and i'm nothing compared to press gate. it's always very difficult and on older anson, can i just say the discussion that you've had and that we've had in previous times and cnn is very respectful because i think we've got watch and the princess will i hope watch the language that's used some newspapers have referred to king charles continuously as cancer stricken king charles. and i do hope the press won't talk about catherine in the same way. language is very important to children language is very important to the millions of us living with cancer working with cancer, being productive, we cancer. but sadly, cancer is a very much of an everyday point of part of life now, for me cleans of us, it's sad. >> but >> i my heart goes out to her and every other cancer sufferer were also trish, i mean, you again, come back to the children at their ages i had a father who battled heart disease ultimately died when i was ten. i certainly understand the horror and the terror a child feels when a parent they suddenly see a parent in this way and here from the parent, what is going on, it's such a difficult conversation for a parent to have where the child it certainly isn't. it doesn't matter what age they are. i've had to have those conversations with my kids and one's a health professional. it is an and also making children not fearful of the future not fearful things like christmases and prince louis birthday it's coming up >> there >> are ways to talk about it in an age appropriate way >> it is >> enormously difficult as you say, anderson as well. remember, william lost his mother, albeit in very different circumstances. >> but the fear of losing a mom at any age actually is terrifying so that's another reason i come back to the language and the sun and i'm sure you'll agree with me. >> sorry. i've got the world and this everybody ringing me because of this because they know i've been very, very public about the language that we use when talking about cancer >> and >> how important it is that we in the media are aware of that, that we're working with people alongside people who may well have had. this is triggering and i'm sure it really triggering for you to anderson. i know where journalists and we're reporters well, but when you hear someone like king charles all the princess is going through this for many, many of us, for many, many children, it brings up some very scary images which is, as i say, come back to that point about why we need to watch the language that we use >> well, it's also extraordinary when you think about a tricia in past times. i mean prince prince william and prince harry have both been very public about the silence that surrendered their mother's death within the family that people didn't really know what to say to them. it wasn't spoken about initially after the their father came and told them she'd been killed they there was a lot of silence surrounding it and the families feeling was just let's let's keep things being normal, so to speak, and try to help them just get over it >> her >> approach certainly seems to be i mean, i think the her generation and certainly with prince william involved, they have probably learned from that in terms of how to deal with their kids oh, gosh absolutely. absolutely and anderson, again, i know because you do a podcast about grief grief starts right from the beginning of any cancer diagnosis. and as a parent, kids can read things like that. they can read worry if you don't talk to them about it, it seems even worse. it seems even scarier grief is something it's about fear of loss of the future will mummy be around for your birthday, christmas is and what have you and we have learned and as you rightly say, king william let's learn. it's going to be interesting about how, how prince harry and his family reacts to this as well. and i do hope that the press don't go the british press don't go after him because it's triggering and it affects everybody in when you've got to family remember, three remember fergie as well sarah ferguson has had her own cancer. >> so you've got three royal family members talking about cancer it's a scary conversation for all the children involved and you are so so right. you have to be open with children about what mummy scared, why mommy's going to the hospital, why grandpas going to the hospital all the time you do have to be very open because as you so rightfully say, if people just tried to sweeping under them a carpet, it's becomes >> or updates, max, understand you're hearing some new information. >> yeah. and it all >> ties in from what >> tissue trisha was >> saying that you've got to >> remember that george is just >> ten. charlotte's >> eight louis is just five then making the point my sources anyway, that they wanted the prince and princess wanted to shield the kids from the coverage in the news, which is why they waited until this point until they were out of school. because obviously in school or the kids will be talking about what's on the news. so that's why they waited until this point, anytime as much detail as we're going to get. frankly, on the medical conditions reiterated to me, we're not going to be told what type of cancer it is. they don't want people to speculate because that's going to create more confusion. they said in terms of the stage of cancer they're not going to give any more medical information and they are concerned about breaches of privacy. this is coming into a lot of what i'm hearing from the palace right now and she's in the record. cos of preventive chemotherapy that cited in late february. and they are is continuing, but they're not telling us until when so i mean, sanjay can speak to that. i'm not sure what that means. and we're not being told where she's being treated, but we are being asked not to try to track. she's going to be going for treatment regularly. she's on chemo so we're going to see some movements, but they're asking us not to share those pictures right now because they want her to be able to recover and she's this. normality for the kids she's trying to create the next it's interesting that that kid made the point that she will try to continue working tried to continue to do public events so the priority isn't a public role, but i haven't taught you it's going to >> she may turn up at events we shouldn't interpret that as hur going back to work, it's not going to be a full schedule. i think it's gonna be last-minute moments if there's a family event or there's a service, something that she thinks is important. she may turn up to it, but i think it's going to be a last-minute decision. her priority is obviously the treatment and the recovery but now we're into the easter holidays. it's about creating some regularity for the children. so i don't know if that means they're going away on holiday they or that they just going to stay at home and take daily outings and just work together as a family william will be carrying on with his public duties. so i think we can read into that that she stable enough at home for him to carry on with his public duties. the pressure on the monarchy right now is absolutely immense. the queen has really stepped up in recent time, she went on a visit to northern ireland just this week. major constitutional events and she was representing the king there. the king obviously isn't carrying out public engagements. k is going to be doing it for some time. william is gonna do what he can. but the top four royals are pretty much out of action. this is a real amount of pressure on ma'am, so i think you're going to see edward and sophie stepping up a lot more. also, a lot of pressure on princess anne right now >> maxval continue to check in with you, one bringing a richard quest richard, i mean, again, this is just terrible news and very sad for the family. and obviously the graded interests to people around the world who are concerned about about her. where do you see this going from here >> i think there'll be two distinct tracks here, if you will, within the united kingdom, i think the, the, the sort of the mainstream media have you will win all follow the rules. there'll be no going after her. there'll be no sharing pictures if pictures are taken elsewhere, they won't be shown her privacy will be respected. but of course it is a democracy freedom of speech, freedom of the press. and so there will be pictures. in fact, the pictures we've seen from us so far have usually been paparazzi, orangey, and members of the public who published them. and that's going to be the bigger problem. i think it's when the paparazzi decided to try and with with vigorous determination, decide to get pictures of in any shape, form, or description and how those are then use who buys them, who shows them, who gives oxygen if you well to these rogue photographs that are taken. and the second thing of course, from the princesses point of view, as much taken with watch her last line of her statement under said she says, i'm also thinking of all of those whose lives have been affected by cancer for everyone facing this, do not lose faith or hope so very similar to the king when he gave out his diagnosis. and suddenly the number of menn go prostate cancer deaths went up enormously so she has got this jewel. well, the primary responsibility and role of course, is to have and her health as she said, but she will be very aware of the need to also for other people to be seen as in a sense, as a role model for how one handles such awfulness in such a public arena in a richard stay with us. i just want to play for viewers who are just joining us because there was at the top of the hour 02:00 that the announcement was made. a video was released by kensington palace. i just want to play that video again, it's about two minutes and then we'll talk about it afterward >> i wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you personally for all the wonderful messages of support and for your understanding. whilst i've been recovering from surgery it has been an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family but i've had a fantastic medical team who've taken great care of me for which i'm so grateful. in january, i underwent major domino surgery in london. and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous the surgery was successful. however, tests after the operation pan cancer had been present my medical team therefore, advice that i should undergo a course of preventive chemotherapy and i'm now in the early stages of that treatment this of course came as a huge shock. and william and i have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of my young family as you can imagine, this has taken time. it has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment but most importantly, it is taken as time to explain everything to george charlotte and louis in a way that's appropriate for them. and to reassure them that i'm going to be okay as i've said to them, i am well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal. in my mind, body, and spirit having william by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance to as, as the love, support, and kindness that is being shown by so many of you. it means so much trust both we hope that you'll understand that as a family. we now need some time space and privacy. while i complete my treatment my work has always bought me a deep sense of joy. and i look forward to being back when i'm able. but for now, i must focus on making a full recovery. at this time i'm also thinking of all those whose lives have been affected by cancer for everyone facing this disease, in whatever form, please do not lose faith or hope you are not alone. >> i'm back now. with our richard quest at, you know, you think back to prior generations, this is not something we would have ever heard from a member of the royal family in the past oh, no. >> no, no, no, no, not at all. you've got the very barest of details and they just present just as a bid. and you never heard from them again, in a sense. but that doesn't cut it. cut it today. you have to look at the the unspoken social contract, the spoken constitutional contract between monarchy and the people is that they serve the people's pleasure in a sense. and therefore, there are duties and responsibilities and which come into conflict when something extremely personal like this takes place. and it's that balancing act anderson, that is good. thank you define how this moves forward in a public sense, obviously, the medical sense and her family is the priority in that way, i was one thing. i was very interested in. what you're talking to dr. jonathan rhino about the way this had moved forward. now, when she initially went in for surgery as the dog good. dr. said they had a pretty good idea that something was amiss if you think about the number of weeks that we have been kept, arms length in a sense, from that sort of information. and it's arguable. we'd never have found out anymore if it hadn't been cancerous. and the public, what hi does the public have to know in what circumstances about her condition, her treatment, the truth is very little until it affects our own sort of way of life on our own constitution. at the moment. that's not in question. >> no. well, again, or thoughts are with or with her in her children and her family. we're going to take a short break in our coverage continues in a moment >> there is no media personality, you're just joining us, we learned at the top of this hour around 02:00 p.m. on the east coast that kate middleton, the princess of wales, announcing in a two minute or so video that she has been diagnosed with cancer. she had gone in as you know, in january for major what she called me sure abdominal surgery she said then that they did not believe it was cancerous prior to the surgery then they found that cancer had been present. she said in a february, she began late february. we believe she began chemotherapy the kate middleton, the princess of wales, nor the anyone had the palace have not, they have not said exactly what kind of cancer this is, nor will they >> be saying that according to our max foster, they do not plan to be giving any more details and they asked for privacy as she undergo continues to undergo this chemotherapy. i want to check in with their max foster. i'm actually i know you've been sort of monitoring not only any information coming out from the palace, from the royal family, but also just reaction in the united kingdom and elsewhere. what are you hearing? >> well i think there's a real shock as we've been faulting quite extensively. there's been so little information about why we haven't seen the princess and this was despite all that speculation out of it out there and a lot of it really distasteful, obviously none of them were talking about this sort of scenario. so genuine shock, i mean, just people around the palace absolutely horrified by what they've heard and the heart's going out to the family in particular, to kate. so as in sam at the five members of the family are in windsor that was filmed in windsor they williams been looking after the kids that they weren't a lot of the privacy wasn't related to the school term, and they didn't want their kids seeing the news or other kids seeing the news and discussing it with the kids at school. so i think now is a real family moment because they know it's exploding on global news media. so the five of them a hunkering down, they were expecting this to happen. there the big mental health campaigners they would have very carefully thought about how to present this to the kids in the first place. and then for them to deal with the onslaught of media coverage. i imagined they have not got the tv on there, just trying to have a normal family time tonight so bolts of them really at this time, also thoughts for the rest of the royal family and a lot of people out there who've just been really, genuinely worried about her and looking ahead to the future, the monarchy, it's taken a huge dent they know that she's very beautiful she's even said she's going to try and get out as much as she can. but this is a senior member of royalty who isn't going to be there for the public right now. and with the king looking pretty vulnerable as well, also with cancer treatment, i think is pretty unsettling time to people here in the uk when the monarch is meant to represent spin ability, continuity. >> and max also unsettling for for catherine and also the opposite of the royal family, the privacy breach, the attempted according to authorities, there an attempt to find out medical records among hospital staff. what is the status of that? and did that i mean, are you hearing anything about whether that sort of played a role in the timing of this announcement? >> i didn't play any role in the timing they stuck to their plant. i mean, if you look at what they've done this that's about land throughout this they've only done what they said they were going to do in terms of media coverage and statements and all of a social media post that they've been putting out there. so the current status of the hospital is that according to our affiliate sources, itv, three members of staff try to get into her digital records at the hospital, tries to see her medical records and there's an investigation in the hospital. and the data commissioner is also looking at that. the police aren't yet involved, but that does suggest that that information wasn't ultimately leaked, but they did try to access it. it does speak to all of the conspiracy and all the coverage here because why would people be trying to get hold of that information? i think the general consensus is that it would have been leaked to the media and they tried to sell that story. it would have been worth a huge amount of money so it all speaks to the same thing. the fact that so many i don't know what to call them. the people out there who are promoting these conspiracy theories trying to get information, trying to make money, frankly, from clicks and views on social media this is the pressure that then are facing and i can't think of another story with a speculation is bloated so much in the course has been criticism of the palace for not giving enough information and allowing those conspiracy theories to bubble up. but they've now explain why that was. and it was simply to try to get their heads around it and to protect the kids >> maxwell check-in with you shortly, sheehan and royal historian kate williams that joins us. kate, you and i have talked about this royal family in happy times and sad. this is certainly a sad occasion. it's also, as i talked about earlier, this our a really an unprecedented level of candor for any member of the royal family yes. >> on doesn't as you say, there's is a huge shock that kate was saying it was a huge shock. i think it's a huge shock for people watching. it's a huge shock for britain across the world. kate middleton has been the princess of wales, has been on the front page of so many newspapers. all these social media trending just as max was talking about. and kate has colored cloud and given this really intimate, really beautiful video in the gardens and windsor castle those daffodils behind her and really being so and preston to the open as she say, she was talking about cancer, she said exactly when the cancer was discovered was discovered, and she talked about starting chemotherapy. so she's really has this openness is what we haven't seen from the royal family before. the kick the queen's father, george the sixth, we knew nothing, even the queen herself as princess didn't know he was l, so she went off to kenya. we simply aren't told this and i think we are moving into a new royal world. it's totally unprecedented. the king was opened, caters open, and i think it really makes us think about the royal family. we can't always imagine they're super humans going on forever, never even getting a cold or even a major illness like this. they are human too. and this is all bought at home to us. i think in terms of what the next steps are, how does, what does history tell us about how >> royal families deal with something like this? >> well, in the past and just involve families have really told us nothing and it was in the tudor times, it was treason to suggest that the monic might be ill. so we are in new uncharted modern waters. and i think it's great that caters come out there and spoken. she's obviously going through so much. it's really tough, but i think so people are really feeling a lot of sympathy for her because she has been trending. people have been all this armchair detective about where is she, where isn't she? and i think people are now thinking twice about a lot of all that. whereas kate's social media stuff hashtags, because the truth was that she wasn't on a beach and she wasn't here or there where she was when she was at home going through this really tough time my name is really tough times as a woman and a really tough times as a mother to think about the children and we just think about prince william here, like prince harry, i mean, they had such a tough childhood, they lost princess diana at a young age. it must be so painful for william to have both his father and his wife suffering from this really tough disease. of course, many of us hello, from cancer and lip go on to live fantastic, fabulous lives. but it also is quite terrifying to hear it. and i think i think a lot of people across the world and we listening to this now, and really thinking about, i think, i think a lot of support for cat, for kate, and i think how requests for privacy are going to be respected. but i do think that we will have more openness going forward. hordes, perhaps when kate has finished a chemotherapy, perhaps as an engagement with the charity connected with a cancer that she's had, she may come out and give us more details about the cancer that she's had. but at the moment, we've been asked not to speculate, not to ask about it, but i think that eventually we will be told and i think because like the king shall hope that by telling people more people well, get checked and because early, early caching of cancer is so important >> i appreciate your time. i want to check when dr. otis brawley, a professor of oncology and epidemiology at johns hopkins university dr. bala. yeah. you've assumed heard what catherine has said. i'm wondering what stands out to you from a medical standpoint? she said she she had this major abdominal surgery in january. it was in late february, started chemotherapy that the cancer that initially when she wanted for the surgery, they did not believe that there was cancer. she says she found out later that there was yeah. >> this is we of course all hope the best for this poor woman who has to go through this in a very public way this does happen. you can have, for example, and ovarian cyst or a problem with the ovary that leads to lung abdominal surgery then the pathologist a day or two or three after the surgery while examining the specimen, finds out that there actually was a cancer. there that happens. we also sometimes see it with colon cancer. we then very frequently will give people what we call ageing thank chemotherapy. that's a person where there's no evidence that they have disease left in their body, but there's still the possibility we give them adjuvant chemotherapy to try to clean up what might be there that's so small, we can't see the prognosis can still be very good. i think that's something all of us have to keep in mind and have to hope we have people who have colon cancer or ovarian cancer, other cancers who, who do very well i appreciate your time. we have some breaking news that i want to get to a breaking news out of russia state media, their reports have group of at least three armed man opened fire inside a concert hall in the moscow region. we're just learning about this. it happened inside crocus did he hall where music group was about to perform video from nearby shows. a large plume of smoke and flames billowing from the building as the building appears to be engulfed in fire, you see the images there cnn's fwrite fread plankton joins us now fred, what more are you learning about this shooting >> i anderson well, this is something that happened in the very late hours of today and you're absolutely right. it happened in a place called cross. know gore's, which is really a suburb of moscow. i've been there many times myself and it happened in the korocha city hall, which is a large shopping and entertainment complex. now, apparently three of these gunman entered into that building, into the cocoa city hall and started opening fire and the latest that we have from the emergency first responders on the ground and from russian state media as well, is they say that there are casualties. they're still trying to clarify what exactly is going on. what we don't have yet from the russians is whether or not they know who the possible gunman are, that they know, or whether they're not they know whether or not these gunman have been neutralized by an or have been stopped yet. that's something that the authorities have not said yet. but by all accounts, anderson, from what we're seeing on some of the videos that we're showing right now now. and also getting from the authorities. this does appear to be a fairly large attack. you're absolutely right to point out that there is video coming out of that building on fire, which again is a huge complex. we were also getting word from the local authorities telling us that there are at least 50 ambulances on the scene to tend to people who might be wounded. so clearly this is already as far as the russians are concerned, a mass casualty event. they also say that they've set up a headquarters there and that they're pulling together all possible emergency response units. and of course, also security units as well to deal with that situation. again, right now, it's unclear whether or not these gunman might it's still be at large. it's unclear whether it is only those three that we're hearing about in these initial reports or whether it's more than that. but certainly some of the videos that we've been seeing from the scene indicate that this was definitely a very difficult and an event for the people who were in that, that must have been extremely traumatizing as well. you hear gunshots that are ringing out on some of these videos that are coming out. and a lot of people who are trying to take cover right now, not clear whether or not this is over yet, whether or not the authorities are trying to create some sort of ring around that area. but definitely the russian authorities are saying that they're taking in this extremely serious and certainly this does seem to be a large event that's taking place right on the outskirts of moscow, anderson. >> all right. fred, we're going to continue to check back with you over the course of this next hour. we're gonna be right back after a quick break much more head on a breaking
