breaking news, we're getting new information about what happened on flight that had severe turbulence that injured at least 50 people passengers even reported seeing blood on the ceiling of this airplane and they saw people flying through the air cnn's pete muntean is getting the latest details. pete, tell us what you're learning. well, severe turbulence, it's it's like this, keep making headlines, john and will likely see even more of these with climate change. seven hurt lives march on a lufthansa flight 11 heard on a delta flight and august 36 on a hawaiian airlines flight, december before last, but this one is the most significant in recent memory, first responders say they've treated 50 people in total on board it's flight 12 taken to the hospital. one patient in serious condition that's happened on lat am flight 800 between sydney, australia, and auckland, new zealand. that flight ultimately goes on the santiago, chile. this was a boeing 787, although unlikely to be connected to any of the issues, the systemic issues that boeing has had with the 7:30 pretty seven max-9, the flight was apparently at 41,000 feet. that's the cruising altitude. the time when the seatbelt sign can be off, passengers say that is when the plane hit turbulence, one telling radio new zealand blood was on the ceiling and people flew and broke the ceiling of the plane. so far the airline is calling this a test technical event. during which the flight caused a strong movement. they need to do some clarifying there. so the airline not even calling this turbulence though that is typically what can cause these incidents and these injuries on board flights, sometimes turbulence can be caused by weather from updrafts and downdrafts have thunderstorms, sometimes wind shear. when there are two rows or columns of air moving at different speeds. turbulence can also be associated with no weather phenomena at all called clear air turbulence. >> meaning >> to be invisible, the pilots airlines have gotten a lot better at forecasting turbulence, but the national transportation safety board says turbulence is the number one cause of injuries on commercial flights, typically because it's a us base agency, they don't investigate incidents like this abroad, although we will see if their help is requested on an incident as significant as those john beaches quickly. >> when was this flight and also your experience, pilot and cover this so well, when you're in turbulence, urine turbulence, is there anything that can be done to mitigate perhaps what happens on board? >> the best mitigation >> is forecasting and the best thing that pilots can do is fly at different altitudes. usually that thing that really pilots need are something called pi reps that stands for pilot reports. and that tells pilots essentially behind you. i've experienced turbulence at this altitude. you may want to fly a different altitude. the airlines have gotten a lot better about this using actually even some cases machine learning to try and make it so that they can figure out where turbulence may be. delta has invested a lot in this also united and other major us are hard to say about let em, but it is something that airlines are really, really concerned about, especially with climate change and global warming. things get hot potter the surface gets hotter, rising currents of air can cause turbulence as well. so even the united airlines ceo scott kirby has warned that we may see more and more weather-related delays because of climate change. although he's done really specifically commented on turbulence incidents, although it's something the industry, industry wide is concerned about, that turbulence could be a more prevalent thing with climate change. john pete muntean, you're such a great report. i knew i would get a good answer to my question there. thank you so much for being with us this morning. >> no ceasefire in gaza. that was of course, a long-held hoping goal ahead of ramadan. but ramadan begins today and still no deal in negotiations over hostage, getting hostages released. this morning is really officials are warning a military offensive into rafah during the muslim holy month has not it's been ruled out though. it is not imminent. >> and >> president biden, he is going where he has not before drawing a red line now on israel's military offensive inside gaza, cnn's scott mclean joins us now with much more on this and scott, benjamin netanyahu is responding that's right, kate. >> so look, americans have been warning for some time now that an incursion militarily into rafah, they would only support if there there was a credible plan to evacuate the 1 million plus palestinian civilians who are sheltering there with frankly, no other safe place to go and frankly, american officials had cautioned that they don't even believe that that kind of a plan is realistic or even possible. israel though is has long said that it would go ahead and despite the fact that president biden in an interview with msnbc on saturday, said that it is really invasion into rafah would be his red line. well, it didn't seem to matter much to israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu, who an interview yesterday indicated that he would go ahead with that military incursion and perhaps that's because biden never actually set out what the possible consequences would be of crossing that red line. in fact, biden went on to give some comfort to israel saying that, look, he would never leave israel on its one would never cut off all weapons to israel. the iron foreign dome, things like that. and so clearly not much of a threat didn't netanyahu, the israeli prime minister, also addressed biden's criticism that he was doing more to hurt israel than to help it insisting that most israelis are behind him. now in terms of any kind of ceasefire talks, a hostage talks i'll let you listen to the prime minister himself, but things do not look good. listen >> fortunately, what we've seen is that hamas is hardman's positions probably because it's assuming that the international ganging up on him well, salma, who not required to make any concessions, so they maintain their outlandish demands, which they are not going to go anywhere and in terms of an offensive into rafah, the israeli multiple israeli >> officials have said that it would be at least two weeks away. a, they don't have the troops built up. b, they don't have the plan that idf has submitted for the evacuation and the military operations actually signed off either. so this is still a ways away, but of course it is looming over the situation. any potential talks that may be ongoing, there are an unscheduled at least officially at this stage though >> scott. thank you so much for the update. john >> with us now is cnn chief international anchor christiane amanpour. christiane, i've lost track of how many us presidents have had not just tried to manage benjamin netanyahu, but manager troll their relationship with netanyahu. now, we see some space between president biden and prime minister benjamin netanyahu in how netanyahu is dealing with the situation in gaza, how important is this? and what can president biden do? >> it's very important, john and many, many of the international allies are just really the word i use his gobsmacked at how this government, which gets so much of its international support, including weapons support and financial support from the united states netanyahu at every possible opportunity is thumbing his nose at president biden right now, the major crisis is twofold, getting the hostages back while there's still some alive and providing food and humanitarian aid to the gazans so imagine this, president biden and his allies are having to go around the israeli government, which has meant to be a critical ally in order to either air or send a maritime aid convoy to the gaza coast. this is extraordinary. this is usually what happens between hostile states in a terrible situation like this. so that's one thing, israeli former prime minister ehud barak has told me and he's written a major artery calling foreign affairs. is that the most urgent thing now is to get the hostages back? he says it may not be the most important because defeating hamas is very important. the most urgent thing is to get the hostages back. and he says that netanyahu thumbing his nose at president biden is bad for israel. obviously bad for the israeli us relationship upon which israel depends for its survival and that there must be says varargs, elections to get rid of a historically unpopular government led by benjamin netanyahu. so you've got all that going on. domestic plea as well. >> john, just shifting gears to ukraine, christiane, we have this exclusive cnn reporting that the arsenal of democracy, and by that i mean the united states in europe ukraine's allies falling behind in production of these crucial artillery shells that russia is producing well over three times as many artillery shells, just before spring when russia, as far as we know, it could be launching a major offensive this is a major problem both gaza, israel, this war in the middle east, and the one in ukraine is really testing the american led international world order, particularly in ukraine where president putin is simply, you know? disregarding all the rules of the international road. so ukraine was doing fine, keeping putin at bay for a long time, for two years. now, it is definitely saying that it is on the backfoot and it's not just the production that russia has ramped it's the firing of shells according to this cnn reporting that russia appears to be firing some 10,000 shells a day. ukraine only two because it's having to ration and this is directly linked to what the congress has done, which is to block any further military support to ukraine while the eu is desperately trying to fill the gap, at least financially. it's really tragic. and you know, this was brought up even at the oscars. mr. slough, chernov and his 20 days in mariupol won the oscar for documentaries and it just shows the devastation of russia's war on ukraine, its aggression, its obliteration of cities, towns, villages, and civilians as well. >> in buses off here. and i'm so wonderful man a wonderful filmmaker who said he was the loudly trade his oscar to have had russia never invades ukraine. christiane amanpour, great to have you. thank you so much >> sara. >> new poll number. so he exceeded are matched expectations with nearly one-third of americans say he performed better than they had expected. cnn senior data reporter harry enten is here. this begs the question so if people thought he did better than expected how do they see him? what's his popularity like now after we went one way, i'm going to zigzag the other way. so let's take a look here, view of joe biden view among joe biden, among all americans, this is a new abc news ipsos poll that came out yesterday pre-state of the union positive use towards joe biden, 33% how about now well, the same 33% no change. the negative one up a little bit, 50% to 54%, but that's within the margin of error the bottom line that you should be taking away here is that there has been no change in the popularity of joe biden among all americans, not a big surprise because traditionally speaking, we haven't seen that change. i know that there was some of that immediate post reaction polling that suggested maybe there would be, but in reality, 33, 33 don't have to be a mathematical wizard to know that ain't any movement you've said before that the most you've seen it go up, it's like 1%. it also isn't a huge chain change game changer. all right, let's see what is there any reason for the lack of change? >> yeah. you know, you mentioned that one-third, you know, >> how did joe biden doing a speech to congress versus expectations? yes, there was that 29% who said he did better. but the vast majority did not, in fact said he do better. look, you've got 24% who said the same, you got 12%, very few who said worse. but in fact, the plurality opinion is folks didn't read about it, didn't see about it, didn't hear about it at 35%. most folks are a lot of folks really just weren't paying attention. they're going about their lives are picking up their kids from school. they're putting lunch, dinner on the table. so yeah. you got it back at 29%. who said better? but the vast majority here when you combine same worse, didn't read, see, or hear about it. this is, this the reason why the rain any movement. >> all right. >> biden versus trump. we know that they are the presumptive nominees for their party. what's that look like? yes, it's popularity. yes. so if we look at abc news ipsos again, this isn't exactly a horse race, but it comes pretty close to what's cooking here. do a better job leading america. donald trump's still ahead here, 36%, joe biden, 33%. again, this has post-state of the union but here's a big number in here, and this is one i'll be keeping a track, an eye out on track of throughout this campaign. look at this, this 30%, 30% who said, neither gentlemen would do a better job leading this country. this is the chunk of voters that i think we're really going to be looking at to have an understanding. okay. which guy is going to win because if we if two guys, we really don't like, it's going to be this group. we said neither that's ultimately going to be determining this election outcome. >> it will depend on whether they go to the polls. number one, that might be the biggest thing, yes. the biggest hurdle. all right? >> this >> campaign is starting very early. it's hot. >> it is him with a look. yeah. and those that that are not interested? yes. especially that 30% that said neither. all right. general election campaign length since 1,972. we are in for the longest campaign on record, tied with two thousand for yet bio cai ye eight months or i think it's 244 days. the average is 5.6 months. this is going to feel like an attorney city to that 30% of americans who said neither, but, you know, button up your britches yet gone because we're into it now it's going to be eight months, folks. you better get used to it because it's on its way no matter whether or not you want it to be or not. >> i thought you're going to write off on a horse with that up. >> but anyway, thank you so much. >> maybe i'll take some lessons. >> as you said the secretary of state, anthony blinken heading jamaica, trying to find a political solution that he is pushing for haitian prime minister ariel henry, who is at this point in puerto rico, unable to return to his country to announce a transitional government. but here's the thing, john, we don't know if henry will even be traveling to jamaica to meet with blinken. no confirmation of that yet the situation in haiti just continues to deteriorate hour by hour over the weekend, we saw us military helicopter under the cover of darkness going into port-au-prince, to evacuate nonessential us diplomats and as well bring in more security to protect the embassy and the remaining diplomats other diplomatic missions are pulling out entirely saying it's just become too risky, too dangerous to operate in haiti. we are hearing that there are more western diplomats so there are helicopters at this point. many other aid organizations and diplomatic missions. they're trying to get their staff on staff out. i've talked to some of those diplomats over the last few days and there describing the situation of running out of food and water that their supplies are running low because they're essentially on lockdown for the haitian people. is much, much worse. they are in neighborhoods controlled by gangs in the crossfire of what's being described as a civil war between the existing trump coalition, the one that turned out in primaries, were actually particularly in southern states former democrats, right? he's won over that part of the fdr coalition. that was the sort of working class whites, you know, the sort of dixie crash whites they're already part of the trump coalition. so some of the people that he's talking to aren't the moderates, the middle, all that kind of stuff. there's sort of the radicalized very online people that have been moving over anyway, i think this is all weird strategy at the end of the day, every pollster you talked to who's honest about this stuff? this is going to boil down to what they're increasingly called the double haters. people who dislike both of them >> and >> while biden is not reassuring for a lot of people and a lot of people don't like him for legitimate reasons. when you compare trump's approach, which is to make fun of biden's stuttering and to be childhood guttering and to be a jerk about it that feels to me like it pushes a more double-haters away than an and i'm not sure it's going to be a winning strategy. >> john, it could there be a more perfect label for exactly what we feel like a statement of the politics of now is like the people would decide are the double-haters like that is just such a statement of the here and now i'm just kind of everyone hates everything. and is the double haters who are who are going to decide because think it's a perfect encapsulation of sadly, why we ended up. >> it's the haters who go to 11 who run our politics. now, it's very weird and kind of feel like i want to get a double hx brand from some cattle ranch to sort of say who, what, where i come down on a lot of as too. but yeah, it's it's a weird moment. no one wants this election and it's gonna be a very, very, very, very long summer. >> and you are excited about and you know, i can hear it and i can hear your voice. a senior face >> mora biden's campaign released its first out of the big post-state of the union campaign blitz, if you will, confronting the concerns about his age, let me play this for everybody >> look, i'm not a young guy. >> that's two secret. but here's the deal. >> i understand how to get things done for the american people. i lead the country through the covid, crisis. can we do one more take? >> look, i'm very young, energetic and handsome. what tell him i doing this for the trump campaign jumped on that immediately and turning it and putting their, putting out of their own digital ad highlighting his age as well. >> are >> concerns over president biden's age going to be settled, kind of in edwars. do you think? >> no, but i do think it's smart of the biden campaign and get ahead of it. i think they should have done it a little sooner, but i do think it's a smart way of doing it, making it more appealing, lighthearted, but also not being blind to it, right? i mean, they didn't use the opportunity than they could have to say my opponents also, not too far behind me, you know, they didn't do that, which i think it was a smart move to just focus on what biden is doing or what biden has done or what he wants to do. but i do think that we're gonna continue to hear the age question again as both men stumble or speeches, i can there are 77, 78, 80 years old, and they're talking in front of thousands of people. these are high pressure situations and their ability to get through it is the longer the general election, the more the nor exhausting it is for everyone in there biden drawing this red line with israel's war against hamas. i really want to get your take on this. let me play. let me play this from the interview from this weekend first for everyone, london, i'll ask you about it afterward >> his red line, but i'm never going to leave israel. the defense of israel is still critical, so there's no red line. i want to cut off all weapons so they had don't have the iron dome to protect them. they don't have >> but there's red line i understand if he crosses in the country cannot have 30,000 more palestinians dead. as a consequence of going after gianna. my immediate >> thought was he must remember how badly it went when obama drew a red line in syria, different circumstances, but still, he was vp than it was a horrible low point for them then created real problems in both policy and politics >> yeah, this is one of these very small examples that actually can lead to bigger problems of the sort of cognitive age issue is that if you don't have this immediate recall that like bill clinton had in terms of his incredibly good retail politics skills. you don't connect those dots and you just sort of go with the little bombs that reporters put in interviews that you don't pick up on and you run with and i think that's sort of for problem. he had a similar problem when he used the word illegal on the state of the union address because he just he forgot the connections that that has with members of his base is larger problem is, i think that he thinks and we saw this in the state of the union. he thinks his political problems can be summed up with his problems with the most passionate parts of his base. and i just don't i think that's true. you look at john fetterman, who's more left-wing on a lot of economic issues than joe biden. he's been throwing haymakers at the sort of pro, palestinian laugh. and he's way more popular than joe biden is according to polls. i think that biden is being told by people in his car kuhn, that all of his problems will be solved if he could just convince all of the people on this very hardcore left-wing basically has to like him again, and i don't think that's that's in the cards and i don't think those are the people he needs it's, really good to have you guys here on a monday. thanks for run through it with me >> all right. we have new details this morning. it's hurting the death of billionaire shipping ceo angela chao, who was pulled from her submerged tesla. chao is the sister in law of senator mitch mcconnell, and she died after mistakenly backing her tesla into a pond last month in texas, according to the wall street journal, she made a frantic call to friend and her final moments as her car was sinking, cnn's lucy kafanov is joining us with more on this. what more are you learning about this case, lucy? >> yes. sara, it's a tragic and also deeply disturbing story her death at age 50 near austin texas last month month was initially described as a car crash, but according to new reporting from both the wall street journal and the austin american statesman, it revealed that she drowned in a positive her texas ranch after she accidentally put her tesla reverse. now, she was spending a holiday weekend and mid february with some girlfriends from the harvard business school. they had just finished in at this guest house. and just before midnight, she got into her car to make the form and a drive back to the main house where her three-year-old son was sleeping. she then apparently mistakenly reverse the car sent flying over an embankment and into a pond where it started to sink. now, she managed to call for help the reports then describes several desperate hours of failed rescue attempts. emergency workers could not initially reached that submerged vehicle because it was in the center of the pond once they did, according to an incident report from a blanco county first responder the two deputies who were in the water standing on top of the submerged vehicle, they requested tools to help break the window to do a possible rescue that couldn't happen. is he newer vehicles like what she was driving? have this laminated glass which is great in a car crash, had prevents you from going flying through the window potentially. but in her situation, it was just impossible to break it under water for effectively turning that car into a sinking tube. the reports go on to say that emergency workers requested a dive team that wasn't available, a tow truck arrived, but didn't have a cable long enough to reach the car and the wall street journal even reports that at least one tow driver was afraid of being electrocuted because it was an electric vehicle. now psa that's not an actual valid safety concern chow, as you pointed out, is part of a prominent family and it has dealings with business dealings with china china also political dealings. her sister, as you pointed out, is elaine chao. she is married to mitch mcconnell. mitch mcconnell actually referenced this death when announcing his resignation, but the death in its mission serious circumstances also sparked a lot of conspiracy theories online, which weren't helped by the fact that officials released so little information about this death. sarah, it's awful think to all the things that happened up until her death when they just simply couldn't get in that car. lucy kavanaugh. thank you so much for that reporting. john. >> this morning, hundreds of people in california may have been exposed to measles after a child was treated for the virus as sacramento hospital at a sacramental hospital the week, the nationwide outbreak continues to grow with at least 45 cases reported across 17 states. cnn health reporter jacqueline howard is with us with the latest jacqueline, what are you learning? >> so john, what we're learning is that health officials and sacramento say that about 300 people could have been exposed to the measles virus. these are people who may have been at uc davis medical center's emergency department the afternoon of tuesday, march fifth. and if someone was unvaccinated, they were exposed to the virus. they could develop symptoms within a window of seven to 21 days. these are symptoms like fever, sore throat, dry cough, runny nose, but most importantly, that signature measles, rash. that's what you have to look out for. and the reason why health officials are so concerned about this, the measles virus. it's very contagious if an infected person coughs or sneezes the virus can linger in the air for up to two hours. and if someone is unvaccinated and they're exposed 90% of the time, they will get sick. but we know that if you've been vaccinated, the vaccine is 97% effective. so vaccinated people, there's no need to panic here. but the reason why health officials are also watching this closely, this one case and sacramento is one of 45 total across the country so far this year, many of these cases are either travel-related or they're in pockets of communities that are unvaccinated. but last year, they were total of 58. it's just the month of march, john, and we're at 45. so this is something health officials are watching very closely. >> yeah, an unnecessary trend to say the least, jacqueline howard. thank you very much for that >> an airline called it a technical event. and now at least 50 the people are injured in one flight, a passenger saying, people want brawl to put a kind of cap on it, cnn's carolyn manno joins me now for more on this. what happened? >> yeah, this was ugly, kate, i mean, this was a very highly anticipated rematch between two elite teams, undefeated south carolina, the defending national champs, lsu, they are rivals, so you expect that physicality both squads very confident that things went way too far with south carolina's best player, possibly suspended for the first it's game of the ncw a tournament now, i mean, this was chaos in the final minutes of flight breaking out your mid-court. so basically what happened here was the ball was stolen off of lsu guard flau'jae johnson. then she shoved south carolina's ashlyn walk-ins, which prompted south carolina star forward camila cardozo to push johnson to the ground players from both teams leaving the bench should join the fray. that of course is not allowed. and then a man from the stands through the broadcast identified as johnson's brother actually jumping over the scores table onto the court before being detained by security and after about a 20 minute delay officials ended up rejecting cardoso, five other players, and cardoso is the teams leading scorer in rebounder. so she might not be available for the next game for the gamecocks, which is in the opening round of the ncw a tournament, looking likely that she might face a game suspension for fighting not condemning that a brawl outright. you heard dawn staley say that she knew that start to finish. that's not what you want to see, but tensions running high at this time of the year, no doubt about it, but a bit of an ugly scene there between two powerhouses in south carolina and lsu. >> yeah. no doubt. could see account. thank you so much. >> sir. >> all right. this week, house lawmakers are moving forward with the possibility of banning tiktok within the united states, the white house says president joe biden is ready to sign the bill democratic michigan congresswoman debbie dingell, joining us now from washington, dc. thank you so much for coming and talking to us this morning. thank i just want to start with this. >> why >> do you think that tiktok is dangerous enough to merit this kind of a bill >> well, good morning. it's good to be with you. look, this bill is really difficult and tough. i didn't know how i was called to vote on thursday until almost that i did play through two different issues here. freedom of speech matters. but let's be very clear. >> no one in that room >> that voted for that bill was voted to ban tiktok. what they were voting to do is to separate tiktok been the people's republic of china, which is controlling that data and using it in ways that could be dangerous to the national security of the united states, nor to understand how they're controlling the yellow ball we've had classified briefings. i've thought long and hard, and frankly, with tic tac that on thursday, flooding my office and other offices with paul to kids who didn't know why they were calling us, shows the kind of control that they have are what tiktok to continue. i don't want the people's republic of china controlling the day aid at the access to the data, and manipulating the data that they are doing. is a threat to our national security. >> so i just want to make sure that, you know, that we understand this correctly. so this is about bytedance. and if bytedance does not separate itself from tiktok in the united states, that does that mean that you will no longer be able to access if this if this bill passes. >> well, i think you already see that there are american companies that want to buy their time to put together a group of people now that would if i to what people need to understand and what are properly understood far better after our classified hearings and briefing is how much the people's republic of china, who's controlling bytedance and the data that is collected i think everybody should have access to these apps. and by the way, i'm not happy that the public aren't doing something about privacy in a far broader way people have no idea how much information they're giving away about themselves, or how he's been in lipid or not. all nap in a good way and that's a red warning as those security through as well. >> it does begs the question, why is this the first real legislation aimed at a social media company? knowing what we all now know about social media's effect on young people, that the taking of data and using it in nefarious ways and having an impact on our own elections >> so this i think that's a very good question for you to ask the democrats in the committee on thursday said why we not doing the further privacy legislation that we have bipartisan agreement on in our committee my understanding is we may be moving that forward in the energy and commerce committee as well. i know that the chairman of the republican chairwoman of energy and commerce here subs concerns you need to be asking your republican leadership in the house and senate about moving that privacy legislation as well. i only murdaugh, we were voting on this track legislation last wednesday spent a lot of time talking to people that classified briefing impacted me. you don't see votes and 50 in our committee ever. so obviously, the data are what the information we were provided show that this was a
