And what the campaign is saying is that between the president and Vice President kamala harris, they plan on the two of them hitting up every Battleground State in the coming weeks. Now, of course, all of this is about amplifying the message that we heard from President Biden last night in his state of the union remarks. And just a few minutes ago, we heard the president telling reporters on the tarmac about the idea of debating his gop gop opposition candidate, donald trump, and also whether he tuned into the republican rebuttal to his remarks last night. Take a listen. Will you commit to a debate with former President Trump . It depends on his behavior. Bridge rebuttals. There i just saw a little bit on television. I said, shes a very talented woman. I didnt quite understand the connection she was making. And were going to see the Campaign Bulking Up as well in the month of march. The Campaign Says that theyre going to open some 100 new offices and make some 350 new hires. And thats also in addition to a new ad campaign that theyre going to be launching to the tune of some 30 million over some six weeks. So these ads, as you can imagine, are going to be focused on the president s policies and also continuing to draw that contrast between himself and donald trump. This of course, coming the day after we heard the president invoked his predecessor no less than 13 times in his state of the union address. Jake. All right. Mj lee, thanks so much. And with us now, democratic congressman Gregory Meeks from new york, hes the Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs committee. Congressman, good to see you. So President Biden getting a lot of praise from democrats for his performance, his delivery. What do you say to those who say, you know, it was a very political speech. He invoked his opponent, donald trump, 13 times, not appropriate for a state of the union address. I say that they could not refute the facts of what he said. And so they say its not appropriate because what the president did was talk about what he had accomplished in the three years where we started from. Why, in fact, you know, we had the we had the greatest pandemic that the world had ever seen that caused the economy to tank, not only in the United States, around the world. And he talked about how we got out of that and that now we have recovered and we are in the we have the best economy in almost any economy in the world. So he talked about the fact and then he talked about what he wanted to do in the future, you know, and what he what we needed to do. And he talked about the bills that are on the table that he wanted the congress to pass, because it will make it better for all americans, like the bipartisan, border agreement, that the republicans are blocking, like moving forward with, with support for the ukrainians, like making sure that we have humanitarian aid to go into the bills. So it was about the state of the union, where we were, where we moved from, where we are now and where were going in the future. Thats exactly. But they could not refute any of it. So you say, oh, it was political. Yeah. Let me, let me, let me ask you, because you just mentioned aid to ukraine. Weve been told that there are still efforts being made in the House Of Representatives to get aid for israel, ukraine and taiwan through the house. What can you tell us about that . Well, were working hard. The easiest way to do it is all the speaker has to do is to put the bill on the floor. If he put the bill on the floor and the congress do its will, we will get over 300 votes for it. Instead of allowing a few of the maga republicans and the speaker, who clearly does not want to do anything other than what the former president wants, hold it up. So that it quickest way to get it done. And we need to do it because time is running out. Yeah, but thats so thats not going to happen. Just put it on the floor. Hes not going to just put it on the floor. So what are the efforts you guys are making i would hope i would hope because weve got as democrats, we got everything all options open. So were talking to and ive been talking to some of my republican counterparts who many of them, when we were in munich, said to president zelensky, were going to get this done. So if the option is a motion to discharge or something of that nature, if the since the republicans are blocking it from coming on the floor, then they should work with us. So were having this dialog and conversation to try to find out is about, you know, what will it take for those folks, in the Republican Party that believes it is the right thing to do . What will it take for us to get a bill on the floor so that we can vote for it . So clearly were ready on our side . The problem is, them, and were talking to them to find out what does it take . I want to ask you about this moment last night, relevant to your work on the House Foreign Affairs committee and invited guest of congress . I think a i think congressman mike waltz, a guy named steve nikou, stood up in the gallery, started yelling at President Biden, whose son, as you know, he was a us marine killed during the 2021 Kabul AirportSuicide Bombing at abbey gate. Lets take a watch. America is safer today than when i took office a year before i took office. Murder rates went up 30, 30. They went up three. The biggest increase in history. It was then through. No, through my. So it was difficult at the time to hear out, hear what hes saying. But just just to explain. At every stage of the game, and i think that, we they put out the after Action Review process, of which talked about and where we had individuals as to what took place and what did not take place, what we needed to do to approve of, to, to improve in the future. But i also think that, you know, because what is happening on our committee, is people are not looking at in order to make the determination is what took place the cause of the lead up to it, you know, for example, i think that we should look at the entire 20 years because theres something that connects to it. But especially, when, the, the former administration, along with then Secretary Of State pompeo, decided that they were going to undercut the afghan government, and, and elevate, those individuals, in, and, and cause the government of, afghan to depart, now were looking at it. Yeah. And we and they have the committee has received more than 100 hours of testimony from multiple and current and former officials. And the State Department has also provided over 11,000 pages of documents to the committee. Right, and for its part, i would just tell you, in looking at this, the State Department has facilitated the appearance of every requested witness in the afghanistan investigation. Right. So were doing all of those things. But nothing has changed the facts from what, the are has stated, but it just seems to me, as the Republican Leadership is doing in every committee, is just trying to do investigations where theres nothing found, that, that contradicts, for example, what the, the, after Action Review, has indicated. Right. But but you work pretty well with the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs committee. Youre the ranking democrat, the chairman, the ranking republican. Michael mccaul, has been threatening to hold Secretary Of StateAntony Blinken in Contempt Of Congress for failing to turn over documents related to the withdrawal from afghanistan. Now, mccaul says it seems to be walking it back. He said blinken has agreed to start handing over documents. Have you been happy with the cooperation by the State Department . Are they finally doing what needs to be done for the purposes of oversight . Its not. Finally, theyve been doing it. Look ive just said every weve received over 100 hours of testimony, okay, from multiple and current and former officials. We the State Department has also provided over 11,000 pages of documents to the committee and the documents of which, my dear friend and chairman of the Committee Just asked for i had a chance to, you know, to start to look and to review, and you can tell that what it what it to me what it substantiates is that the after Action Review, which was put in place so that people under being, anonymous could give their actual and honest feelings and thoughts where you see some talking about, you know, some of the positive aspects of it, some talking about the faults of it, and what needs to be done to help in the future. Thats those documents you can see was taken into consideration when the after action and review, was put together. So i see theres nothing more or anything that i have seen thus far that is trying to hide anything. Was was it absolutely perfect . Well, no. The entire 20 years in afghanistan was not perfect, but what we were looking at is how do we can make sure what we can learn from it, just as we did in nine over 11, so that we could be better prepared in the future, but not trying to just, do what has been doing in other committees where you see, for example, mayorkas, impeach him, try to impeach the president , try to bring down the State Department. So the judge is now asking carrolls team if they have any objection to this bond or if theyre okay with it, as they know it, and to get back to them by monday morning, if there is a disagreement.
