this war that a father of two is returning to this week. >> reporter: kate, this is the retall -- reality of the war on the front line in ukraine where they are fighting day after day, and they are saying that the russians have a meat grinder tactic of wave after wave where there are mass casualties on side after side, but they want the world to see what is happening, and what the soldiers are going through, and we have heard from the armed commander of the armed soldiers who has said that the war is at a stal stalemate, and both sides are locked in just to hold on to the ground and just to hold on to the trenches, and really, oleg is perplexed. he says that ukraine at the moment is not winning this war. >> but seeing in terrifying detail what these soldiers are up against on the front lines is so important. anna, thank you for that great reporting and bringing it to us. sara? >> and now to the war in the middle east, and a cease-fire violation that is blaming hamas, and hamas blaming israel, but we are not hearing that it is going to stop the hostage release. and welcome back. we are learning that since the pause began on friday, the families of the hostages that are set to be released today have been notified. the youngest sadly is not on the release list. it is believed that the youngest and his family are not being held by hamas, and this is complicating efforts to get his family to safety. and another example of brutality of hamas, israel is confirmed that a third israeli hostage has died. ma marie katz was taken from kibbutz near oz, and they they the body is still being held by hamas near gaza. and today, near qatar, the israeli and egyptian leaders are trying to push the hostage agreement further. burns is trying to get the truce extended past the now six-day agreement, and also, to expand the negotations to get the men and possibly even soldiers released from captivity. kaitlan collins is standing by once again in tel aviv, and now, burns is trying to make way in qatar, and this as we wait for ten more hostages released today? >> it is 5:00 p.m. local here, and we have not been seeing any activity of the hostages being released today. that is a multi step process that we are hearing from the israeli officials that the hostages have been handed over from hamas to the red cross, and them they get into the ambulances and make their way to the rafah crossing, and so it takes a little bit to go from gaza to egypt and then back to israel. and so, as you pointed out, sara, the clashes happening in gaza between israel and hamas, and so far, we don't have indications it has derailed the deal, and they are accusing each other of violating terms of the agreement which is no fighting happening in gaza at the time, and we are watching that closely, and also the trip by the cia director to doha at the moment meeting the qatari officials and egyptian officials to have the ongoing discussions. what the u.s. wants to see here is an expanded deal, a not two days for the more women and children to get out, but hoping to get the negotiated more idf solders and men and women to get out, and talking to people here, that is a much higher price they would have to pay than what they have done for the women and children which is a three palestinian prisoners in exchange for every one israeli hostage who makes it back home. that is another part of the deal that is continuing as a part of the two-day extension. so right now, everyone is waiting to see if the efforts by the cia director is going to be successful, but who is going to be on the list of hostages released today, because we know the youngest estyoungest, a 10- baby, the youngest on the list is not held by hamas, but instead another terrorist group. we are tracking all of this with oren liebermann in tel aviv, and also, learning news from idf about another hostage who has been killed. do we know if this person was killed before they left gaza or any details on that front? >> according to the idf, the body was discovered in gaza. and it was discovered because some of the children were out the first date of the release of the israeli women and children, and that is when they learned the horrible news that she had died. that is the third israeli that we now know of to have died in gaza. the first was corporal that was found some 50 meters from the hospital according to military, and the second was the 65-year-old grandmother who was also found in the vicinity of the al shifa hospital. so it is a key question, what is the condition of the hostages held by hamas, and as we have learned more definitively held by other groups, but it is a question that nobody has answered conclusively and not the israelis and not the u.s. and not the qataris. so this is something that we are going to be watching closely, because israel says they are operating in such a way as to not operate the hostages held in gaza, but it is incredibly difficult objective to carry out, because israel never had any indication of where they are, so this is unfortunately a horrible aspect of this that we will keep an eye on. >> and oren, how we are learning about the push of what the cia director is doing in doha, they want the deal to include men and idf men and women soldeiers as well, but there is a desperate sense to get their family members home, but the window here. they know the truce has been extended by two days, but they know that israeli officials are saying if it goes south or abruptly after the two day, it is clear that israel is going to begin the military campaign in gaza which could be more expanded than what we are watching for the last several weeks. >> there is a tremendous push on the part of the families, and you are absolutely right, of the hostages that is, that israel gets out and does everything to get out all of the hostages that it can before the fighting resumes. we see it now from the push of the 10-year-old to be on the next list to come out for the put the pressure on the israeli government to make sure that more hostages are released that. something that we will be tracking closely here. also international pressure from the u.s. and the qataris pressuring hamas, and the international partners to make sure that the truce lasts longer to get in more humanitarian aid and a longer pause in the fighting, and more palestinian women and children to be released from the prisons, and a point to be made here that israel is saying that the second the pause is over, the war is back on, and in fact, we have just seen israel and hamas of accusing each other of violating the terms. israel says explosives planted near the troorngps, and they returned fire. and hamas saying they returned fire. so what is critical, it is not disrupting or causing agreement to fall apart, but it is showing you how fragile the overall agreement is, and that something that we have to keep an eye on as we go into the last 24 to 36 hours of the extended truce. the key question here also is what is the price hamas tries to exact once we have seen the women and children come out. israel has long believed it will demand more certainly for the men, and absolutely more for the men and women who are soldiers in the israeli military kidnapped. is there a bridge to be built there by the qataris to get them out, which is a critical question, and one that has not been answered. i am not sure that anybody has tried to approach it yet as they focus on the women and children. >> yeah, we will see how long hamas wants to keep that pause in fighting under way. oren liebermann, thank you for that. starting today when it comes to gaza for what we are seeing there quiet and no fighting, the first of three u.s. military flights carry critical aid for gaza which will stop in egypt before it goes to gaza, and on the flights are food, and winter gear, because obviously the winter is coming, and it is going to be incredibly rainy there, and once the aid has arrived in gaza, we are told that the united nations will be in charge of distributing it. this delivery is separate from the ongoing truce extended for two days. the u.s. says it will continue even if the truce is disrupted as oren said it is inkres bli fragile, but the question is if they can get it in as easily when the fighting has resumed. arlette saenz is tracking all of this, and how confident are we that the aid is enough for what the people need on the ground, and two, how could they ensure it is going to continue to go into gaza once israel does begin the military campaign? >> there is a realization that more needs to be done on the aid front the ease the suffering within gaza, and they are trying to ease system ome of that by s in the first of three military planes of this added plane headed into egypt today. at that point, it is going to be distributed by the u.n. and used to replenish some of the supplies and stock that have started to winnow down as this fight continues. now, this latest shipment is expected to include medical supplies, food, winter gear, and as you noted, this is a cold and rainy season in gaza, and they want to ensure they get that type of the material to the civilians there. it does come as there has been an increase of aid going into gaza since this truce of hamas and israel has started. there are roughly 800 trucks of humanitarian aid that have gone into gaza, and president biden, himself, he has pointed into one of the successful portions of the truce to the fact that they have been able to get the hostages out, and get the humanitarian aid, and the administration trying to take one more step to help the civilians in gaza with this aid. >> in addition to that, the u.s. is clearly planning for what happens if this truce does end, and when it is going to come to an end at some point and what that looks like. and we are hearing how they are urging israel to be more surgical when it comes to targeting hamas, and what is the u.s. warning israel about basically? >> well, the senior administration officials are urging israel to be more precise and surgical in the operations as they are going after hamas to avoid civilian casualties, and one thing that they have pressed upon israel is to warn them of conducting the operations in the southern part of gaza where people have been fleeing to as the conflict has unfolded. this is coming as the anticipation that after the truce ends, that fighting is going to resume, and one thing that the officials say is that they have been having constructive conversations with the officials of what has been going right and wrong, and so there is a need of ensuring that the civilians are protected, and try to do more to minimize the civilian casualtcasualties, and coming back home as people are facing the political frustrations as the thousands of palestinians that have been killed in gaza. the white house, as they are consulting with the israeli officials in the next steps, they are trying to caution them, and encourage them to be more precise in the operations against hamas as they are trying to protect more civilian life. >> yeah, we will see if those messages come through. israel is quite intent on resuming the campaign and especially on moving it to the south s. arlette saenz, thank you for the great report. kate and sara, there are still a number of questions of what happens after day five and six of this temporary truce expires. >> yes, a number of families are waiting to see what happens. thank you to kaitlan and arlette. our cia director bill burns is back in qatar, as you heard, pushing for a broader deal. this to include military soldiers in this one, and he is set to play a key role in the negotiation, and he is going to meet with the qatari and egyptian counterparts. i am joined by cia operative bob bare, and how significant is it that the director of the cia is back in qatar to talk to the qataris and the egyptians and israelis and hamas, and the importance of him being there. >> well, the importance is that he is a season diplomat, and a very good diplomat, and abled cia agent, and very discrete and cia communications are secure, and so any sensitive discussions that the president knows will be held tightly, and so that is why burns is there, but what burns would lo ve to do, and i am speculating here is a permanent cease-fire, because right now, the israelis are intent on resuming the war and going south, and there is no such thing as precision strikes in gaza, and it is not possible, because it is built up. israeli intelligence is not good enough. so we are at a threshold. will the war expand, expand into the middle east, and so sending burns to qatar is the best the president can do. >> can you give me a sense of that we know that hamas is in the midst of the negotiation, and you have all of the people in the balance, and can you give us a sense of how tricky this is when you have so many players and when you have a group that the united states is considering a terror organization, but also is the government at this point in time of gaza. >> hamas is gaza, and there are groups that apparently hold hostages which make ps it difficult, but to get rid of hamas, you have to get rid of the entire infrastructure of government there, and that is what the problem is. since 2007, hamas has taken over gaza completely, the health, education, everything -- the police. so getting rid of it, i don't know how you do that, how you define "getting rid of it" but right now, the israelis politically and for their survival, they need to get rid of sinwar the political head, and the other leaders, because they are underground, and they are moving all of the time probably every 24 hour, and the israelis, and we are talking about again, they have to resume this war. >> bob baer, thank you so much, and what you said so important, hamas is the government there and in every segment of society, and getting rid of hamas is not a thing that is truly possible. i appreciate your time. kate? >> with more hostages getting released, we are starting to get a clearer window of what they endured while in captivity. the fear, the silence, the handcuffs and the deplorable conditions and the darkness. their stories are next. >> this is an incredible rescue. all 41 workers in india who have been trapped underground have been pulled to safety. we are joined now, and this is quite a revelation here. and we are looking at the live pictures of the ambulances stacked up right outside of the opening of that tunnel. and what can you tell us? >> sara, nothing short of a miracle. after 17 days, 41 of them are hopefully in good physical condition if not the best being pulled out, and they are being whisked away in ambulances for medical attention and focus as we speak. now it has taken a lot of effort on part of the government as well as the rescue teams on the ground. there's been disappointment day after day. there were huge heavy drilling machines brought in, and they were cutting through the rubble, through the medal roads impacted by the debris, and cutting off the 41 days for 17 days from the rest of civilization, if you may, and today, they are out. they used a pipe of three feet in diameters for the last three days to push it through and how they reached out to the 41 men to bring them out one by one on a stretcher that was mounted on wheels and using the pulley system, and the ropes really to pull them out gently. the entire passageway inside of the tunnel was illuminated with lights to make sure that the men who have been in darkness almost for 17 days do not panic while they are being pulled out. for 17 days, constantly, the authorities have been reaching out the them through megaphone, through the pipes and supplying them with oxygen, food, medicines, and mobile chargers, and promising them to be pulled out. and there has been dejection, and disappointment in the run-up to this, but now only elation, and relief on the faces of the rescue teams, and the family members, and the migrant laborers themselves. 41 of them out in the last hour and a half, and what a story, and a miracle, and achievement in one of the roughest and most difficult terrains in the himalayas, sara. >> and yes, uttarakhand is way up in the north of india. and i am sure that we will start to hear from some of the rescued. we appreciate your time, and we will be back from you to try to get an update. kate? >> big bold move and one potentially with dollars. the koch network associated with the republican dollars have just endorsed nikki haley. they, the koch brothers, are out now with a new ad for the former ambassador, and this is a big deal not just for nikki haley, but the entire republican field. >> that is right, kate. so often we hear the endorsements, and they don't do that much or move the needle, but this is potentially very different, and the reason why is the incredible amount of money that americans for prosperity has at their disposal, and they will use. this is the first time they have been involved in the gop presidential primary, and they said they had to, and they knew that they would likely bypass former president trump, because in the explanation of the endorsement of nikki haley today, one of the executives saying that the gop continues to nominate what they call bad candidates, and that americans are rejecting them, and that is why they are throwiing their support behind the former governor of south carolina nikki haley who they believe could win. what does thaeir support mean? it is millions and millions of dollars of ads in the super-tuesday ads and access to the data of voters and network of conservative activists acting on her behalf, and this is a huge boost to nikki haley fending off ron desantis, the florida governor, as the trump alternative here in the race. and the scene to be set, former president is continuing to lead this race in the national polling and early state, and what we have seen is who is that trump alternative, and that is what so many people in the field have tried to become, and ron desantis has pitched himself as the person who can beat donald trump and win in the general election, and nikki haley has done the same thing, and in all of this polling, and also on the ground, we are hearing from the voters who are trying to sort through who is the best alternative and who can win. that is the thing they keep looking to, and so this endorsement could potentially reshape a lot of dynamics within this race, as we are closer to january 15th, of course, kate, the iowa caucuses kicking off the primary season voting. >> and jessica, in what this political network brings to the republican field, and to conservative causes and has for years, it almost seems biggest statement yet of the republicans, you know, like the republican donor network trying to move away and past donald trump as you are talking about. it is a real statement of what they are trying to do, and of course, with the caveat, and you never know if it is going to work, but it seems a significant moment for that reason alone. >> it certainly does. you make a good point there that for so many people in, let's call it the gop establishment, not even never-trumpers, but people who supported donald trump in the last two election cycles who do not want to see him move forward as the nominee, and they want a new chapter, it has been a question of who will they coalesce around, and in this case, this is a huge push for nikki haley to be that person, and that is what is so significant is in that battle that at that moment, it is between desantis and haley, and haley is getting a big boost from this. >> thank you for that great reporting. we will be right back. you want to be able to provide your child with the tools or resources they need. with reliable internet at home, through the internet essentials program, the world opened up. fellas, fellas. that's how my son was able to find the hidden genius project. we wanted to give y'all the necessary skills to compete with the future. kevin's now part of this next generation of young people who feel they can thrive. ♪ ♪ >> we are standing by this morning for the release of ten more hostages at the hands of hamas, and learning from those who have been freed for what they have been forced to endure for seven weeks in captivity in gaza, and including from a person who spoke to matthew chance. she told him that they had little food and access to bathrooms and more, and this from the head of the medical team helping the hostages and the missing families forum telling cnn this morning in what he has seen in evaluating 84-year-old hostage after she was released. >> you can see it on her body that she was dragged from a place to place, and that she was handcuffed, and like she has chemical wounds from not her basic needs, if you know what i mean, and this is immense suffering. >> she remains in the hospital in what doctors are saying is a life threatening condition. >> joining me is yakov katz, and what are you hearing of what the hostages had to endure and survive in captivity as the families are starting to talk more about it. >> some of the stories, kate, they are heartbreaking, and one of emily hand, the 9-year-old girl, the one with the curls and the beautiful looking child who k came back and thought she had been in captivity for over a year, and cries herself to sleep. and another boy who was forced by hamas to watch the horrific videos from the october 7th massacre, and when he complained about it, he was beaten. and stories of the elderly women who were starved. they lost something like 5 to 15 key lilo weight, and that is ab 25 pounds. there was not enough food, and system of the women were kept in cages, and left in the dark without access to the bathrooms, and this is nothing like what the geneva convention calls for the captive ss of the rules, bu remember, they were not captives, they were hostages. >> and now, we know that they have agreed to two more days of a truce, and bill burns of the cia and the director of ministries there in doha are planning to look at what comes after day six of the truce. what do you believe could happen? >> well, on one hand, israel wants to get back as many hostage as possible even after the release of what we have seen in the four days and the ten coming home tonight, but you have 170 about that are being held in gaza strip by hamas. and israel has the interest to get back those people, and even the women and children, kate, who have been brought back, and many fathers and husbands left behind, because hamas is not willing to release the men. so while we are excited and happy to see the people come back, the families are still broken and still ripped apart, but i think that israel has two interests here, and one is to weaken hamas to limit the capabilities and remove it from power in gaza, and listening to bob baer, before, the former cia operative who spoke about, yes, hamas' leadership is still intact, and brigades down there, and thousands of fighters and significant capability to pose a threat to israel, but on the other hand you want to get more hostages, but israel will say enough of this break and pause, and we have to get back to the main objective which is to deny hamas the ability to carry out such at a tack again. >> and so do the military officials in israel think that they can take out hamas and the operational capabilities without starting up the ground operation again? >> i don't think so. i think that everyone in israel when i talked to the military planners, they all understand that this can only be done with boots on the ground in southern gaza. they can try to keep it a little bit more focused and pinpointed in the operations more so than what we saw in the northern gaza where there is a lot of devastation and destruction, but it is not simple, because hamas embeds in the civilian infrastructure and we have seen the way they use mosques and schools and hospitals and apartment buildings, and if you want to smoke out the fighters and the leaders and degrade their capabilities, you have to go in on the ground, and you know that when you are going in on the ground, there is friction, and battles, and destruction and collateral b damage, and sadly civilians will be killed, but that is sadly what israel has to do, because there is no alternative. hamas cannot be left intact and standing to continue to pose a threat to israel and the rest of the world. >> especially when the talk of needing to go in to take them out also means to going in and going underground as we know and as we are learning more and more about the tunnel network underneath all of gaza that the hostages are coming out. thank you for coming on. sara? coming up, "sports illustrated" is under fire after several articles are g generate by a.i. . and fake a author nam more d details on n that.
