be in the group released today. both sides are talking about extending the truce, which would allow for more hostages to be released in the coming days. >> we are taking the necessary steps in order to be prepared for a new mobilization, a renewed attack against hamas and its strongholds, wherever they are holding out. they are still holding over 100 -- around 200 hostages. ten people a day, that could be 20 days. so we need to keep that in mind. >> here's a look at the women and children who have been freed from gaza since friday. we've been seeing celebration, and emotional reunions in israel, here, you can see a cheering crowd greeting a convoy of buses carrying released hostages. we're also proud of well wishers waving israeli flags outside the hospital, where the former captives arrived in military helicopters. >> and yesterday we did see the release of the first american hostage, there she is, 4-year-old abigail adan. president biden says that abigail is getting the care she needs in israel after 50 days in captivity, and witnessing hamas murder both of her parents during the october 7th terror attack. look at this, we also saw 9-year-old emily hand, released and reunited with her family. her father says that he was originally told that emily had been killed on october 7th, but there she is. she was at a sleepover at a friend's house when hamas attacked. let's start our coverage this hour with kaitlan collins. she is live in tel aviv. those images, kaitlan, of those little kids getting to come home is everything. what about today? the slight delay that may happen? do you have any reporting on that? >> yeah, we actually do have new reporting on what's going on. obviously, this is day four of a four-day truce. the big question is whether or not it's going to be extended. but part of the issue is still just getting through this day in and of itself. and this fourth list of hostages that are set to be released. and my colleagues, alex marquardt, mj lee and i are hearing that there are basically these ongoing negotiations between the u.s., israel, and hamas that is being -- mediated by qatar. and it's an issue with what today's list looks like. and one of those main issues i'm told, and what's part of these ongoing negotiations is that there are no mothers on this list. that is what i'm hearing from an israeli official. and of course, part of this agreement, israel says, is that any children who are in captivity with their mothers must be released with those mothers. you've seen a number of children who have been released by hamas in the last three days come out with their moms, if their moms were in captivity. there was one moment on saturday, on day two, when there was a major delay in the release of the hostages, where one of the hostages was released without her mother. hamas claims that they could not find her, they could not locate her, her uncle later came out and said that she told them that it was just two days before that she had been with her mother and they were separated. that's still an outstanding issue. and it appears to be an issue that has resurrected itself with today's list. we are hearing that there are no mothers on this list, though there are still several moms, we believe, being held by hamas. now, whether that's an issue if hamas is playing games, if they don't want to turn them over, if they genuinely do not know where those mothers are. that remains to be seen at this point, but this is appearing to be what is a sticking point in these talks today, in this issue. and obviously, it's a major one. because it's typically in about an hour or so from now that we would start to see the exchange of those hostages get underway. that, so far, it's still a major question whether or not that's going to happen today. >> to your point, kaitlan, there's all of this talk about a potential extension, all the parties seem to agree that he would they would like to see an extension. if this doesn't get figured out, what does that mean for any talks about a potential extension? >> it's not clear that it means that there won't be an extension. you're right, israel obviously seems to be in favor of an extension, a brief one. it's not clear how long they're in favor of doing this. hamas came out yesterday and said they favor an extension, as well. but i think there are a lot of questions about how long that could go on for and whether or not hamas can continue to produce hostages to allow that extension to go on. or whether they obviously want to give up the hostages, because the hostages have been hamas' leverage here. that is still a major issue. i think right now, before they decide whether or not this extension is going to play out, something that the israeli war cabinet did discuss last night during their meeting, i was told, it's a question of what today's list is going to look like. and whether or not they can work through these issues with the fact that no mothers are on it right now. the other question, of course, we know there are two more americans that the u.s. believed would be eligible. i heard you talking to john kirby about whether or not the u.s. knew that they were on the list. it didn't sound like they did know. and that's still an outstanding issue as of this point. i've been asking sources if any of those americans are on this list. they don't know yet. a lot of issues with what today's list looks like, in particular. i spoke to an idf spokesperson last night about what hamas has been doing in this pause, in the fighting in gaza, and they said they did have evidence that the group is moving around some of the hostages. it's not clear to where they're moving them, but they clearly want to make sure that they know where they are, that israel does not, as these negotiations are ongoing. >> all right, kaitlan collins, stay close. we'll be back to you, shortly. a mother and her three ching among the hostages released yesterday. she was along with her daughter and two sons. they are waking up this morning in israel at a hospital after a 51-day nightmare. here they are in the hospital, finally, together with their family and her three children are also returning to a shattered family. her husband, nadav and their 21-year-old daughter were murdered during hamas' tobacco on october 7th. they used to be a family of six, look at them there, and now they are four. this morning, hen's brother said that he knew that their daughter was murdered. their home is one of the israeli communities right near gaza are so many were murdered and abducted. that horrific day, hamas terrorists entered their safe room, murdering nadav and yam and abducting chen and three of her children. joining us now is nadav's cousin, she was born in israel and served in the idf. thank you very much for joining us this morning. i am deeply sorry for your loss, but also so happy for you that those members of your family are finally safe. >> thank you. yes, we are very relieved. we feel like a ton of bricks has been lifted over our hearts. it's been very difficult for me to witness this from far away. i was in israel for nadav's funeral and his daughter's funeral. it was a devastating double funeral. and i've been here for the past two weeks, holding my breath and yesterday was finally able to get that big sigh of relief out. when i saw them on the screen. >> of course. the fact that that funeral was held on chen's birthday as she and her three children were still being held captive. how do the boys look? 9 and 11 years old. i know you haven't been able to physically hold them, but how did they look to you? >> so, just like most families who live far away, we were just staring at the screen yesterday and looking at every detail. when they were in the red cross envoy, i was able to see chen's shoulder and my kids and i were trying to get a glimpse of them. family photos show them very pale, very, very pale and frail, but outwardly in good condition. there are no wounds, they weren't shot. there's no visible physical wounds. in terms of emotional healing and what that will look like, we'll know in the coming days, and potentially even coming years. there's really no playbook addressing kidnapped children at such a tender age. and so, the word's out on that, but we are so very grateful that we were reunited with them yesterday and that, unlike potentially other families, chen, the mom and the three kids were able to get out of there as a family unit. >> and i know that you had also said that they didn't appear withdrawn to you. and the fact that chen is a social worker, you think, is a benefit given all that they've endured for this family. >> correct. the family calls chen lioness. she's a lion, she's a fighter. she's the kind of gal you would want to be with in any kind of crisis. both nadav and chen are super detail-oriented, strong, loyal people. the best people you're ever going to meet. so i am very confident that she did everything she could while they were in 51 days of captivity to make sure that her daughter and her sons were as best adjusted as they could possibly be. >> the lioness of the family. i think that says everything. what has the impact been more broadly on your family? because there's the joy, there's the deep pain of your loss and then this joy, and then your anguish for the other families waiting for their loved ones. >> yes, we are now a very big extended family, all the 240, you know, families, we all kind of know ooeach other, whether is in person or social media. everyone attends everyone's families. everyone's connected. so the advocacy, the talking, the halla baking, the prayer doesn't stop just because we got our loved ones back. we're going to push on. and so, yes, so it's -- one person said in the family, one eye has a twinkle in its eye laughing, the other eye still has a tear in the corner. it is mixed emotions. so we really, really pray and hope that a good resolution is forthcoming for all of the affected families. >> one extended family, all of you, united through this tragedy. gali mizrahi, thank you very much. >> thank you very much. well, this morning, israel and hamas signaling they are both open to extending the temporary truce that is set to expire later today. sources now telling cnn that the lack of mothers on today's hostage list is delaying the expected release. more than 100 palestinian prisoners have been released from israeli prisons, as part of this deal. more set to be released today. we have reporting on that, next. good morning from tel aviv, where it is day four of that temporary truce between israel and hamas. we are still waiting is to hear more about the fourth list of hostages that are expected to be released today. we know israel got the list overnight, but there appear to be ongoing issues with that list, and who exactly is included on it. we know part of this agreement, israel says, is that children who are being held in captivity should be released alongside their mothers. that is part of the agreement that the idf claims hamas has already violated when it released one hostage on saturday night without her mother. her mother, who they did believe was being held with her in captivity in gaza. it still remains to be seen who is on this list today, including if there are any americans. so far, 58 hostages, 40 of them israelis, some who are dual nationals, i should note, 17 thai citizens, and one filipino have been freed. joining me now is axios political and foreign policy reporter, brarak ravid, who is incredibly well sourced here in the region. what's your understanding of what today is going to look like, whether we even get to whether or not there's going to be an extension to this agreement? >> good morning, kaitlan. well, i think we saw a pretty similar situation to what we see today on saturday, when the release of the second group of hostages was delayed, because of all sorts of misunderstandings between the parties, i think this is what we're seeing now, and israeli officials i spoke to just moments ago said they're cautiously optimistic that this mini crisis will be solved within the next hour or two, and that the fourth group of hostages will be released today. >> okay, so they're cautiously optimistic. we'll continue to watch that. the next decision that they'll have to make, obviously, barak, is whether or not that extension is going to happen. and i know you reported last night that the war cabinet had been discussing that. there wasn't a vote, it doesn't p appear, on whether or not to proceed with that. what's your sense of whether or not israel is going to move forward with an extension to this temporary truce? >> so i think the israeli government is totally open to such an extension of a truce. israeli officials tell me that there's already some sort of, i don't know if we can call it a proposal, but let's say, a talk about an extension by two days, with the release of 20 hostages, 10 hostages each day. the israelis are totally open to it. and i think that also, netanyahu in this conversation with president biden last night, told him pretty clearly, if we get another ten hostages, we can do another day. if we can do an additional 20, we can do two days, three days, four days, as long as we get hostages. >> what is the sense of how long that could go on? that extension. because we know that there are more women certainly being held in captivity, more children, as well. but is there basically a time limit on this for israel before it resumes its military operation in gaza. >> well, there's a technical time limit to it, because the cabinet decision that approved the deal in the first place spoke about a maximum of a nine-day pause. this means you can extend it by five days and by 50 more hostages, and to get to overall number of 100 hostages, this is what the israelis assess that hamas has, is women and children. but i think that if we'll get to those ten days, and this is, you know, we're not there yet, and there will be more hostages that hamas will be ready to release, i'm sure the israelis will be happy to do more -- another extension. >> and your sense is that if this extension doesn't happen, that israel would almost immediately begin its military operation, not just resume it, but the part that they've been pretty clearly telegraphing, which is extending that military operation from not just the north of gaza, but to the south as well, is that right? >> yes, totally. i think that, let's say, by the end of day today or by midnight today, there's no deal or extension of the pause, we will see tomorrow resuming of military operations and israel will not go to the south just yet, because they have the neighborhood of jibalia in northern gaza that they still want to operate there. and what we will see in southern gaza is going to be very, very different than what we saw in northern gaza. smaller units, more raid-like operations, and not this massive assault by thousands or tens of thousands of soldiers, as we've seen in northern gaza. >> all right, barak ravid, we'll be watching this closely. you say there's cautious optimism that that fourth list of hostages will be released. we'll continue to check in with that. phil, poppy, still obviously an ongoing situation as we are waiting to see what is going to happen here. we should see some movement within the next hour or so, but on saturday, when there were issues with the list, there was a multi-hour delay and obviously, that's just anguishing for these families whose families are on the list, who have already godden calls from the israeli government and had to essentially wait to see what was going to happen. >> it's such an important point. as we talk about extension, they still have to finish today, which is something that's up for negotiation. kaitlan collins, back with you in just a little bit. also this morning, palestinian prisoners freed by prisoners returning home to streets of the occupied west bank. some were paraded around on people's shoulders as other crowd members waved palestinian flags. 117 palestinians have been released in the first three exchanges for hostages held in gaza. one final exchange is expected today, as hopes are growing for a longer truce and potentially more hostages to be released. israeli's prime minister has said he welcomes the possibility, but at some point, he says israeli operations in gaza will resume with full force. an arrest has been made overnight in the shooting of three palestinian college students in vermont. the suspect set to be arraigned in two hours. more on that, and also an update on the condition of those victims, next. and this morning, israeli officials met with elon musk after musk shared that anti-semitic conspiracy theory on "x." you even see him with the israeli prime minister, benjamin netanyahu. more on that, ahead. this morning, a 48-year-old nan is in custody for the shooting of three college students of palestinian descent. this happened saturday in burlington, vermont, they are all just 20 years old. here are their names. hishami, qanan, and cashine. that picture was taken just before they were shot. they were all wearing the traditional palestinian scarf at the time of the shooting. the suspect is set to be arraigned in two hours' time at 10:30 a.m. eastern time. joining us now is their attorney. he is working with the three victims. he is also the national executive director of the american arab anti-discrimination committee. thank you for being with us. as we wait for the arraignment of this suspect, is it your understanding that this was motivated by hate knowing the conditions you know about the shooting? >> good morning and thank you for having me on. from our understanding, from our read of the facts, hate and the ethnicity and the race of these individuals did play a factor in them being targeted. and i think as the investigation playing out and we get deeper into the suspect's mind-set, we're going to clearly see that this was a hate crime. but we do also want to thank law enforcement for acting quickly to apprehend him, find him, apprehend him, and ensure that the public in that area is safe. >> what was your reaction when you saw that an arrest had been made. >> relief. i think the family is relieved that the suspect, that an arrest was made. and many in the area, in the neighborhood are relieved as well, this individual posed a danger not only to the three victims that he shot, but possibly others. so we didn't know much about him. now we're getting a clearer picture of who he is. and it's, you know, it's an important step in this process, and one that puts everybody, you know, at ease, that's involved in this. >> can you share with us what that clear picture of the suspect is telling you about him? that the public may not know yet? >> i think we'll know more again after the arraignment today. we'll let law enforcement speak on that. i know they have a preference scheduled, so we don't want to talk in front of them, but we'll let them get into it. but i think a picture is going to start being painted about what happened that evening, who this individual is, and why these, you know, three young students were targeted. >> the three young students, these three friends, can you talk about their relationship? they were in burlington for thanksgiving. how they got to know ooeach oth, what the extent of their friendship was? >> they've known each other for years. they've known each other from their time in palestine together and the families know each other. they've been friends and they're just like millions of other young college-aged students this past weekend, trying to get a break, visiting old friends, visiting family over the holiday. and unfortunately they ended up in this tragic situation. so they are like millions of other college-aged students in this country. >> yeah, hisham, a student at brown, kinnan, and tahseen, just trying to enjoy the thanksgiving hoil. two are in stable condition and one is in critical condition. is that the latest you know as well? >> yes, that's the latest we know. and the family did ask for privacy, so we don't want to say who's leaving soon, but you know, one of them is in serious condition and one of them will hopefully be released soon. and another one is on his way to recovery. >> do you have any information about -- there has been some discussion about family members or any family member being able to make the journey over to the united states, whether or not that has actually come to pass? >> we do have family members on their way to the u.s., so that's being arranged, as well. we are working with the family members and trying to arrange the travel here. but they do want to be with their children, just as any other parent from any other community would want to be with their kids. >> of course, they do. and we hope they are able to make that reunion. thank you. please keep us posted as you learn more. >> thank you. will do. well, for the first time in nearly two months, we're seeing glimmers of hope as hostages taken by hamas are slowly being reunited with their families. new details are emerging about how they were treated in captivity. >> also, thomas han spoke with cnn when he thought his little girl had been murdered. look at that, now she is back in his arms. their remarkable reunion, next. there are more and more images coming in of hostages being reunited with their families after nearly 50 days in hamas captivity. like the brodesh family, who reunited with their father at schneider children's medical center. but some of the freed hostages are now facing severe medical issues, like albra who is now in a hospital. officials tell us she's in critical condition in the icu due , to, quote, significant medical neglect during her time in captivity. joining us now are two people with different vantage points of what it's like dealing with hostages after they're released. dr. levine is the head of the medical team for hostages and missing family forums, and sherome lipovitz mother was released last month. i want to thank you both for joining us this morning. professor levine, i want to start with you. it's our understanding you were with elma and her family last night. what can you tell us about her condition? >> yes. i've been with the children yesterday night and today. and she is now in critical condition. she is simply fighting for her life. she's now ventilated. she came in a very, very poor condition, obviously, in a state of total neglect, both medically, but also from the basic human rights and dignity. her body temperature was 28.5 celsius degrees, which for a long time, her body was full of bruise. not clear, maybe she was taken like from place to place like sack of potato. this is how no human being should suffer this kind of suffering. and i must say, personally, because i have been with the family in meetings with the red cross, we told them that this is what could happen if she would not get her medications. that she could be dying. and it's disgrace for all of us, as mankind, that this beautiful, you know, woman who was a grandmother, raising her grand ch grandchildren, and happy with life, and well-adjusted and independent before she was abducted, although she had medical burden, she reached such state for 51 days in captivity. and the family requested me to come to you and tell a story to save the others. because we can still save the other hostages. we must release them, or those who are not released now, the very least, to allow a red cross visit to treat them now today, because they could be dying. >> professor, just to follow up -- when you talk about being moved from place to place, is there information about how she was transferred at various points? there's so little we know about kind of the day-to-day for the hostages. what do you mean by that? >> we can't ask her, because she's not conscious. she could not communicate with her children, and it was, you know, heartbreaking to see how they try to tell her, you are now in good hands, after you have been in the bad hands of the hamas. we love you, we want to speak with you, you are now in israel. and she didn't answer. so we don't know what kind of passage she had, but we know former city scan, how poorly she was treated. we know from her blood samples, that it's been a long time that she was not with it. and you know, some of the indications are simple, thyroid problem. it's easily can be given in gaza. it's really shame that she was not given this medications. which could have been given, if the red cross would be there. >> i have thought often about the words we heard from your mother after she was released, the strength to give what i think amounted to almost a press conference about what had transpired, describing her experience. just to start, how is she? it's been several weeks now. how is she? >> my mom is okay. i'm going to refer to what professor hagai just said. we know now from the early return hostages that my father was seen alive in gaza and we know that he was injured, but okay. and my father, too, has very medical conditions. he had cancer. he has fluctuate ing blood pressure. and listening to hadai brings back home, and i'm kind of hard able to speak just now, it brings back home how complicated this situation is. how desperate we are. how these elderly people must come home now that we need to get them home now. there's no time to waste. and the world must do what they can to bring them. the red cross, the u.n. these are people that were taken alive. they are peaceful people. i am lost for words just hearing this now. >> i can't imagine the pain in this moment. what other, if i can ask, information, do you have? there has been, as you noted, some information. do you know anything more, particularly in the wake of the most recent releases? >> well, we knew before that my father's dna was identified in gaza. we knew from my mom that my father was injured. we're the first people that came from my kibbutz that still have over 60 hostages, including 12 children. from my kibbutz, we knew that my father was injured. the last we knew about him was that he was taken to gaza, but we did not know if he was dead or alive. since then, we heard that he was alive and seen in gaza for sure and that he had injuries in his legs, but they were not life-th life-threatening, but my father too needs his medicine. he needs it urgently. he will not survive very long without it. and we know also that he might be not well now. so, this is really the case is bringing forward the absolute urgency of everybody now seeking to extending this exchange of hostages to continue beyond the 50. there is an opportunity here for many more. we must come to releasing the elderly people too. we must then work to release all hostages. this is unacceptable. >> as those talks continues right now, and the urgency is certainly understood. for the hostages that have been released, what is the path ahead? what should, for caretakers, for family members, what should the considerations be as they deal with 50-plus days in captivity and now being free? >> they face a long phase of recovery mentally, physically, also here, also hospital, my who was shot in the leg and was operated here. and she now will face a physical recovery for injury, but also mental recovery. it has been a long time for them and they really need the families with them, they really need professionals and, from all aspect, from diet and psychology and medical issues and dental issues to recover. they are in good hands. i met with lipovitz and her mother, and we are very pleased to see others recovery. but for a long time, for all of the released hostages and also, for example, they have other family members for her, still in gaza. so it's very difficult, a traumatic event, you're in a safe place now, you can recovery. the event is over. but for them, the event is not over for all of us. as long as there are still s hostages, some of them family members, they cannot really recovery. and this is something that i don't sleep well at night because of that. and i think that everyone with a heart cannot sleep well at night when there are baby, 10 months old baby is still in captivity. and there are elderly people who really need their medications and there are people with all kinds of problems and no one deserves to be in the dark for so long without a sign of life. we are very concerned, although we do have some hope, because we see for some of them that were released, they are able to slowly recover. >> the complexity of the cross-cutting emotions here, i don't know that you could put words to it. we appreciate your time. please keep us posted with whatever you need. certainly, we are all hoping for the release of your father soon. thank you both. >> you're welcome. >> thank you. >> really powerful to hear from them together. well, 9-year-old emily hand, she was held hostage by hamas for 50 days. now, look at this. that is her being freed on saturday. she was reunited with her father at a hospital in israel. her father, thomas hand, spoke to cnn, really multiple times throughout this harrowing ordeal. first in the immediate aftermath of the attack on their kibbutz and then about his efforts lobbying for his daughter's release. here's a look at their remarkable journey. >> a reunion 50 days in the making. >> we finally got emily back from the hands of the gazan terrorists. she's lost a lot of weight from her face and body, but generally, doing better than we expected. >> 9-year-old irish citizen emily hand was freed on day two of the truce between israel and hamas. she was taken hostage when hamas attacked kibbutz barry on october 7th. her father says she was sleeping at a neighbor's house when militants stormed the kibbutz in the early morning hours. he waited two agonizing days for news of his daughter. >> i just said, we found emily. she's dead. and i went, "yes"! i went, "yes," and smiled. because that is the best news of the possibilities that i knew. she was either dead or in gaza and if you know anything about what they do to people in gaza, that is worse than death. >> thomas hand planned to bury his daughter beside her mother, who died of cancer when emily was 2 years old. weeks later, the israeli army informed hand that they believed that emily was alive and being held hostage in gaza. her father agonized over her upcoming ninth birthday. >> she won't even know what day it is. she won't know what day it is. she won't know it's her birthday. there'll be no birthday cake, no party, no friends. just be petrified in a tunnel under gaza. >> hand worked nonstop lobbying for his daughter's release. he traveled to new york to feature emily on a billboard on times square on her ninth birthday. hand says his entire focus is now on helping his daughter heal. >> i'm not going to send her to school for at least a year. we're going to give her the world. >> he plans to take her to disney world, he has said, and beyonce and everything fun that she deserves. >> just ached for that moment to actually come, that we saw. them embracing. >> and it came. president biden said the u.s. will push to extend the military pause as he faces growing pressure from his own party over the rising civilian casualties in gaza. >> also this morning, israeli officials met, look at that, with elon musk who traveled to israel after he shared an anti-semitic conspiracy theory on "x." pretty striking to see him there with benjamin netanyahu. more on that repeporting, ahahe. welcome back to cnn this morning. here are five things to know for this monday, november 27th. hamas and israel both open to extending the temporary truce. it is set to expire today. israel says it will pause fighting for an extra day for each ten additional hostages released. >> but there is a delay with today's hostage release, outstanding issues regarding the number of mothers on the list is putting an exchange on a slight hold at least for now. elon musk met with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu, touring a kibbutz that was attacked on october 7th. this visit comes after musk amplified anti-semitic comments on x. yesterday set a new record as the busiest day in american airports. the tsa says it screened nearly 3 million passengers. tomorrow president biden and the first lady dr. jill biden will attend a tribute in atlanta for former first lady rosalynn carter who died at the age of 96. those are five things to know this morning. don't forget to download the five things podcast. to politics now, president biden says the u.s. will push to extend the military pause in gaza as he faces growing pressure from some within his own party and some within the white house over rising civilian casualties there. joining us jamal simmons who served as biden's deputy assistant and communications director for vice president kamala harris. good to have you at the table. >> good morning. >> "washington post" laid out this division within the white house extraordinarily well, i think 27 interviews, those reporters did, within the white house about a key meeting that happened between some of the top folks around the president and younger staffers who are -- who don't see proportionality here in terms of the response. what did you make of that and what it means for where the president is going to be on israel going forward? >> i think a couple things are happening this morning, poppy. good to see you both. a cummings are mapping. one, there is a real tragedy that's happening in israel that happened on october 7th, hamas what's happening, the hamas attack, there's another tragedy that's happening inside of gaza where we see so many kids, 1,200 people died in israel october 7th, ten times that number or more have died, women and children, in gaza. what you are seeing in a democratic party is a real reckoning over these two paths, these two things that are happening and it's happening also inside the white house. now, what's different about this white house that's happened in previous administrations is it's a generational divide. it's a lot of young people inside of the white house who instead of back in my day, you know, when i was a young white house staffer in the clinton administration, you would argue your case with your superior, right? you would present some evidence, talk about your concerns, then your superior was sort of either you convince them to go along with you or they had a different position and that would be the position that they would take. today that's not what's happening. you're seeing young people taking on and having their own say and you get the white house chief of staff, anita dunn, others coming together to talk about what's happening. so that's a very different thing and i think we're going to see the president wrestle through this. let me just say this, the democratic caucus, the democratic party writ large seems to agree with where joe biden s which is that israel is our ally, we stand fast with israel, then they're going to argue with israel about what to do about how to minimize the damage that may be taking place. >> is that not a generation m issue as well, though? i think younger democrats, younger progressive-leaning members of the part, that coalition, and i think they are krit calling to an electoral coalition, are in a different place than where president biden is on this issue, than where the last generation of democrats may be. is that fair? >> and that's probably what's happening in the democratic caulk u. caucus on the hill as well. younger democrats, more diverse democrats are raising questions that older democrats aren't really -- aren't raising. >> unless you're bernie sanders. >> but even bernie sanders isn't for a total ceasefire. he's saying perhaps there should be conditionality. >> he's not saying perhaps there should be conditionality, he's saying there needs to be conditionality and chris murphy echoing that. >> the leahy law which is already on the books says that the u.s. cannot give money to a security force that's committing humanitarian problems. so there's question about what -- you need a new law, right, the law may already exist on the books, the question is now can -- does this law apply to the idf and we don't know if that's the case. let me say this, i think in the democratic party this is a real problem which is why i think you're hearing bernie sanders echoing this, you're hearing murphy say this because what do we do young democrats that are raising this and are going to be critical to democratic support in the next election? >> is there an answer to that? >> listen, this is what the argument is about. i think the white house is taking the position and i think you have some members of congress looking for a door that's based on values to have a conversation to bring both wings of the democratic party together to find a solution. >> quite a conundrum really. >> my pause was trying to think how you actually balance that. >> and you know this from covering the white house and this president it's been pretty clear that politics and polling on this has not so far changed what he has said about standing side-by-side with israel on this. so we will have you back as this continues. >> there is also about 130 or so former obama and biden staffers who has written a public letter who support the president's position. the reports of internal strife mayer overwritten. >> thank you. thanks so much for starting your week with us, we will see you right back here tomorrow, but it is a very big day ahead as this hostage release is anticipated in just hours. ststay with cncnn for all l of .
