we have to harness that unity to continue this mission and make sure it's brought to its conclusion. >> thank you very much for your time from jerusalem, avi. and "cnn newsroom" continues right now. netanyahu told president biden that the possibility of extend thing truce with hamas would be welcome. >> pause not a cease-fire. >> the past few nights an emotional roller coaster. >> president biden celebrated the release of abigail edan. >> my son and other israelis are being held captive and it's my job to keep this prioritized. >> huge crowds in the occupied west bank welcome and celebrate the rehe of these women and children held in israeli custody. >> after seven weeks of darkness, finally a bit of light. >> it's not going to end before they're all out. >> the hope is on both sides that this could be continued for some time. good monday morning. the final day of the four-day truce between israel and hamas and a source tells cnn there's a slight issue with the list of hostages set to be released that could delay today's swap, both sides are talking about extending the pause in fighting as hamas plans to release a fourth group of here's a look at the women and children who have been freed from gaza since friday. >> we've been seeing celebrations and emotional reunions in israel a cheering crowd greeting a convoy of buses. a crowd of well wishers waving israeli flags outside of the hospital where captives arrived in military helicopters. the release of the first american hostage yesterday. 4-year-old abigail edan, president said that abigail is in israel receiving the love and care she needs after 50 days in captivity and witnessing the death of both of her parents the october 7th terror attacks. >> we awe an update, we've been following this story, 9-year-old emily hand reunited with her father, her father said he was originally told that emily had been killed on october 7th. we're live in tel aviv, do we have any sense right now where that fourth group of hostages released? >> no information about who's on that list. u.s. say there are two women with american citizen ship who could be part of the first 50 to be released under the women and children agreement. there are some issues here, an open question about whether we may see the same sort of roadblocks two days ago that delayed the release of several hours. yesterday the transfer itself went smoothly and by really evening the hostages were welcomed back in israel, we saw people lining the roads, waving israeli flags, that same sort of welcome playing out at a hospital, at a hotel families c some of their friends, many of them released were from that community, the process will continue to play out. it remains however a question how quickly, how smoothly and what does that mean for the possibility of extending this truce and the agreement of releasing more hostages and more prisoner and all parties seem to be saying the right things in terms of getting an extension. one of holdups could be qataris being intermediaries there are at least 40 women and children who are not being held by hamas, any idea who are holding these 40 individuals? >> reporter: well, at the very beginning of the war, palestinian islamic jihad claimed they were holding 30 hostages. it speaks to that exact issue, hamas isn't holding all the hostages. hamas which controls the gaza strip will need time to gather those hostages and make agrangements to transfer them. that takes time. that's part of the reason for the truce and part of the reason israel is not allowed to fly drones for certain hours. hamas can move around to find and bring together the hostages that they don't control. so that's an open question here. however, in terms of domestic pressure, we're seeing including from the hostages released, pressure on the government minip this going. listen to this. >> lost a lot of weight. face and body. generally doing better than we expected. we're still fighting and want his sister and mother back. as i promised, release children without their mothers -- >> reporter: of course it's just started raining out here. but one of the key moments we're looking for to see if there's a possibility of extending the truce whether israel receives a list of more hostages that could be released tomorrow that would be a strong indication here that the truce can continue, more humanitarian aid can go in. >> something to watch for for sure. thank you. these are the faces of the israeli hostages who have been freed over the last three days all of them women and children as agreed upon by the terms of this truce. she was released by her mother and two children. the israeli prime minister's office shared this video. they spent 50 days in captivity. her husband is still being held hostage in gaza. you're obviously holding the image of tal. >> i want to say a cousin. he's my cousin. yes, indicates just get home on saturday night, almost sunday morning, and he's still there, 52 days now, that we haven't seen him and we don't know anything about him. and, you know, you just say about edan and the kids, i want to say without tal our family will never be complete and they will never be family as we know them, because as a family we know that tal -- time together. tal and the kids. now when you say it, it's like something is missing. . the situation now is bittersweet, because we're so happy to have kids. we're waiting for tal. we're waiting for tal. his brothers, his parents of course, the kids, the whole family, the friends of tal, the neighbors, so many people that tal took a part of their heart, so okay. we just want him back. >> of course you do. i'm so glad you have his face and his beautiful smile we'll do everything we can -- >> just look at his eyes, his eyes are so good, you can see he's good person. tal is a good friend, he's always taking care of someone. he's trying to help. he'll make you laugh. and he can make the children laugh so loudly, so we just want to be a family back, to get normal back, to have private moments without the camera and without interviews, but we just and the first thing that we just want him back alive. we want him back alive. we miss him very much. >> you have described. >> we want to thank you for your time, to hear about tal. >> of course. i know, you have described this as the saddest joy and the happiest sadness because of those mixed emotions, right, to have her back, the children back, to be missing your cousin tal, i believe you were able to visit with them, is that right, at the hospital this weekend? >> i just saw them yesterday night for a few minutes. and today, i -- all my power and yesterday, all my power goes directly to tal. i'll have all the time in the world to see the kids and play with them, but the time for tal, i'm afraid to say, is running out. it's 52 days. we don't know if he's got something to eat, if they give them, i don't know, shower or just water to drink, we don't know anything about him. what is the situation of him and need any treatment, to see a doctor? we don't know about him, anything, all of my worry today is tal and to the other hostages in gaza, because as i say we don't know anything about all of them. >> thank you very much. of course, we'll keep -- >> thank you for your time. and just don't, don't forget them, because for you maybe it's only a picture but for us tal is the entire world. so we miss him and we want him back. >> of course. we will. we will. thank you very much. >> thank you. thank you very much. we have new details this morning about ballistic missiles being fired toward a u.s. destroyer by houthi rebels. this is a wild story on its face, what more can you tell us about what happened here. >> reporter: on sunday, a commercial tanker carrying focus foric acid with links to an israeli-linked company, sent out a distress, a u.s. destroyer that operates responded to that call when they arrived at the commercial tanker five armed hijackers jumped off of the ship into smaller boat of their own and sped away. the mason pursue those attackers. the public haven't identified who those hijackers were. a pair of ballistic missiles were fired from houthi-controlled yemen in the direction of the u.s. mason. the missiles land harmlessly in the gulf of adan. there were no casualties or injuries of any kind, but this is obviously hugely concerning for u.s. officials, because the houthis are iraned backed supported group that has launched numerous attacks against both u.s. interests in the region as well as israel since the events of october 7th, both using missiles as well as drones. the concern of course is that this is yet another troubling sign by an effort by the houthis to escalate this broadly conflict. iran itself is seeking to calibrate the response to the israeli invasion of gaza in such a way it will void a broader escalation. but houthi are independent. again, this attack yet another concern of a potential escalation by the houthis. >> thank you. president biden making it clear that he hopes today will not be the end of the truce between israel and hamas. >> that's our goal to keep this pause going beyond tomorrow, so that we can continue to see more hostages come out and surge more humanitarian aid to those in need in gaza. >> it all comes as the washington post is reporting internal divisions inside the white house over the war, we have a lot to discuss with john kirby. he's going to join us next. short time from now hamas is expected to release more israeli hostages today marking the fourth and at this point final day in the agreed upon truce but there's hope it could go longer. benjamin netanyahu told president biden yesterday the possibility of extending the truce would be welcome for the further release of ten hostages per day from gaza, this comes as hamas says it too wants to extend the pause in fighting. joinings us now is admiral john kirby, what's your understanding of the americans who are still there. u.s. officials were clearly aware that 4-year-old abigail edan was on the list. two other women being held are they on the list to be released today? >> we don't know yet, phil. we'll have a better sense later on this morning. we have obviously hope that those two american women are on that list and will be reunited with their families together. we're working on this literally by the hour. >> to that point the president in his remarks made a point of thanking the leader of qatar, they've been in regular discussions over the last several days, he repeatedly made the case of abigail edan central to his conversations, a sense she wouldn't have been part of the release if not for that push from the president. >> the president has been personally engaged in this entire deal, getting it to execution and then every day since execution began, he's been personally involved in moving things forward, obviously abigail was on everyone's mind, just turned 4 on friday, just a little girl who had to watch her parents get slaughtered right in front of her. clearly we all felt a special need to get her out, but we're not forgetting the other americans held hostage. >> you mentioned the other americans, there are roughly seven more, should we assume that they are men, they're male, perhaps serve in the idf, why are they not considered on any list? >> this deal was for these first 50, what hamas agreed to do was women and children, we know that there were abigail and two women and we hope those two american women can get released today. the other hostages being held don't fall in that category, they're men, i don't want to go into details of their identity, but we certainly hope that back to what you said at the very beginning that hamas will agree to an extension of this deal so that we can get more hostages out in coming days, the israelis agree to a pause in the fighting, to stop while more hostages get out, more aid gets in, we certainly hope that hamas will be able to deliver on that. >> to that point, if everyone agrees, what's the issue, what's the holdup to an extension? >> some of it is the ability of hamas to be willing to let men go, they hold men in a different category, and number two, to be able to find additional hostages, i mean, not all of the hostages we believe are in hamas' hands, that there are other groups that could have some and of course it's going to be on hamas to go get them and produce them in exchange for additional palestinian prisoners as welcoming out from israel, so again, the onews is on hamas right now, we hope they'll be able to continue the release of additional hostages over the coming days the seven other americans, the nine americans i would say, is there any chance they're among the 40 that the qatari say are held by other groups? >> we don't know, phil. we don't have perfect visibility as to where they are and who's exactly holding them, but we have to keep open the possibility that some on other groups, other than hamas might be holding some of those additional americans. >> the qataris have made the point they've negotiated with the political wing of hamas, what assurances do you have that that can actually get done, get those prisoners in hand? >> that's up to hamas, phil, these groups are operating in gaza, we know they have some kind of connectivity with them. hamas they would know how to get ahold of these groups and get additional hostages released from these groups if they believe they want to do that. again, we're hoping they'll do the right thing here, identify additional hostages and get them release gld some question about conditioning u.s. military aid to israel, we've seen chris murphy, the connecticut senator, very prominent spokesperson on foreign policy issues as well as bernie sanders, the president was asked about this, jake sullivan was asked about this, to put a fine point on is this something that the administration is considering or open to? >> the actions we have been taking and the actions the president has been leading, has had outcomes. we got hostages coming out, trucks going into gaza, now we're into a multiday pause in the fighting, so the president's going to stay focused on getting those kind of results, we'll continue to support israel, they have a legitimate right and responsibility to go after hamas that poses a genocidal threat to the israeli people. >> the answer is no at this point? >> what i'm telling you as the president said yesterday, you know, it's a worthwhile thought, but if we had executed on something like that we wouldn't have had results that we've been able to see so far. >> john kirby, admiral, thank you. >> you bet. new details about the man accuse odd of shooting three palestinian college students this weekend in vermont. why investigators say the victims they believe were targeted.. this breaking overnight a 48-year-old white man is in custody after police say three palestinian college students were shot in burlington, vermont, listen to first responders reacting to that shoo shooting. >> prepare for transport. >> you heard the authorities the shooter is unaccountable for, there's been an arrest. victims all 20 years old. walking along street street on saturday night when police said a man came up to them and shot them without saying a word. significant development that there has been this arrest. what more do you know. >> reporter: poppy, when you hear that audio it's just chilling to think that shooting happened on a tranquil street, this morning joggers are out, people are walking their dogs and to know just two days ago those three palestinian american students were on their way to dinner when police say that local man with a handgun shot three of them, one of them in critical condition and two of them in stable condition at last check. some of the organizers, some of the organizations i should say who are close to families have identified those three 20-year-olds. kinnan abdalhamid, tahseen ahmed. and you can see hisham awartani. an attorney representing the families of these young families believe that this is a hate crime, local authorities say they're not quite ready to go there quite yet. >> the suspect walked up to them and shot them. they weren't robbed or mugged. it was a targeted shootinged and targeted crime and they were wearing the keffiyeh. their identify played a role in them being targeted. >> reporter: burlington's mayor speaking over the weekend saying that the just the mere possibility that this may have been a hate crime is chilling. and that's why local police are heading this investigation at this point with support from federal authorities are making that a priority, also the american jewish community quite vocal over the weekend not only condemning this attack but also urging authorities to investigate this as a hate crime. >> how are they doing, i know they're in the hospital being treated, do we know their condition this morning the three of them? >> reporter: yeah, they're this the hospital not far from where i'm standing now, we do know at least one of them is still in critical condition. more to share about the family of one of those young men, the man you saw on the right in that group territory awartani, a photo shared with cnn by his family showing him in relatively good spirits, a source close to this family of this wrong man is immobilized. doctors are working around the clock to restore blood flow to his spine and an another source close to his family have one of his bullets lodged in his spine still a lot of uncertainty about that long road to recovery and the family members of at least two of those three young men are trying to make their way here to the middle east to support their children. >> thank you for the update this morning. phil. israel and hamas signaling they're both open to extend a temporary truce, a source tells cnn there's slight issue with the list of hostages that could delay today's swap. could a deal be workeded out? wewe'll l discscuss, next. look at this, right here, the moment 13-year-old was reunited with her uncle after she was released from gaza saturday, israeli officials were expecting her mother to. freed with her but she was not on the list and idf says that's a violation of the agreement to keep families together and today as the final day so far of he four-day truce between israel and hamas, sources tell cnn there's a slight issue with hostages and prisoners set to be released today. does this get extended? we had a representative from the idf who told us, look, there are about 200 more hostages, the truce could last 20 more days, you said something on cnn yesterday that was interesting, that would not make sense for israel. >> it doesn't make sense for israel and wouldn't make sense for hamas. one hamas loses all of the hostages they lose power and leverage and they lose protection and historically speaking, egypt actually did it, they flooded all the tunnels. israel will do the same thing, they'll go in there heavy handed and continue to dismantle hamas. from israel's side they need to defeat hamas for multiple reasons and i highlighted this is the second most horrific terror attack, second only to 9/11 in the modern era, to ask israel to ignore that and just move on is illogical number one and number two, we went into afghanistan on the other side of the world, this is, you know, having hamas in connecticut, right outside of new york, that's what we're talking about, they have to go after hamas and they have to dismantle them. the third part of that is the best way to recover idf soldiers is to go in militarily but not in the manner of which they have done it before, they should pivot to a counterterrorism focus strategy, which is direct action precision raids by special operations forces, they'll take detainees who can interview, it will also limit the collateral damage and protect the hostages from possibly being wounded themselves from, you know, 2,000-pound bombs leveling cities, it will bring the international community back on israel's side. this is a just war for israel. >> before more on the military operation the americans, we just spoke with john kirby from the white house talking about they know there are two women and they're not sure they're going to be on the list today, the president made a personal issue of getting 4-year-old abigail edan out, she was released. an incentive to hold on to the american hostages. >> yes, americans are worth more, we're connected to israel, they have more leverage if they hold americans, but they have released women and children that were americans, so it's indicative of the fact that they're willing to release some americans, but the idf members, a young man who graduated from high school last spring in new jersey and joined the idf, he would be held long term unless there's another tactic to go after and recover him. >> you mentioned afghanistan just a moment ago, and president biden has been asking benjamin netanyahu to learn from, you know, some mistakes the u.s. made. chris christie, what does an actual defeat of hamas looks like and how do you do that? listen to what he said. >> ultimately, hamas will get stronger not weaker in the long run if all of the civilian death allows them to recruit more effectively enabling inside gaza. >> just talked about proportionately. i think he's right, hamas also gets stronger and more embolden if the pressure on israel to j just -- if you look at what the united states did in iraq going after al qaeda in iraq, perfected by the interagency doing precision raise, exploit and analyze that's the targeting cycle, you do that almost every night and it also prevents a russian tactic of going into chechnya which is what gaza looks like right now. >> chris, we appreciate your time. thank you very much. this morning, israeli officials met with elon musk after he shared an anti-semitic conspiracy theory on x. chris christie vowing to stay into the presidential race until the republican convention despite the commanding lead that trump still has, some speculation about trump's s potentiaial running g mate. wewe'll talk a about thahat, ne. you bring a lot back to civilian life. leadership skills. technical ability. and a drive to serve in new ways. syracuse university's d'aniello institute for veterans and military families has empowered more than 200,000 veterans to serve their communities and their careers. from professional certifications, to job training, to help navigating programs and services, we give veterans access to support from anywhere in the world. nice footwork. weman, you're lucky, awatching live sports never used to be this easy. now you can stream all your games like it's nothing. yes! [ cheers ] yeah! woho! running up and down that field looks tough. it's a pitch. get way more into what you're into when you stream on the xfinity 10g network. you're in this race through the new hampshire primary? >> i expect to be in this race through to the convention, dana, so, yes, absolutely. that was chris christie telling cnn he plans to stay in the gop primary race until the convention and not interested in consolidating support with nikki haley to challenge the front-runner donald trump. the front-runner was at the palmetto bowl, one republican whose support donald trump shouldn't rely is kevin buck. take a listen. >> everything who thinks the election was stolen or talks about the election being stolen is lying to america, that's everyone that's making that argument. everyone who makes the argument that january 6th was an unguided tour of the capitol is a lie. >> joining us now the "the new york times" political correspondent michael bender. bender to start with what you heard from ken buck, retiring congressman, tend to be more candid than perhaps the sitting republican congressmen, do you think that view of things holds much sway if anything over the republican primary electorate. >> it doesn't seem to be so far, i mean everything we've seen, trump's lead has expanded over the past 12 months as the felony charges have accumulated, right, there are 91 felony charges the bulk of which have to do with his behavior and his, you know, after the election and the time at the end of his term and those have a little effect so far, you've hinted at it this morning the field has narrowed, so we'll see for sure in these next couple, few months as we get into iowa, new hampshire and south carolina, but right now really loyalty to trump seems to be the litmus test inside the republican party. >> such a great point, underscores why your story over the weekend was so important. often times before iowa if you're talking about vice president shl sweepstakes people are dismissing you saying you're looking for click bait. when trump is ahead by this much, this matters. as you were reporting out this story, how real do you think the search is right now within the trump campaign? >> i would describe it as informal for a couple of reasons, one, is the thing is the point you just mentioned there hasn't been one primary vote cast this in this race yet, all we have public opinion polls to go on, so you know, the campaign is very careful not to have a formal formal process for vetting candidates. and the second reason for that is trump's superstition here. he very much does not want to get the cart in front of the horse on some of the specifics when it comes to a second term, including seeking and vetting a running mate. that said, you know, trump sees the polls, we know, because he talks about them all of the time. and he started again, what i would describe in this piece as informal conversations, batting names around with some advisers and some advisers can't help but hear him talk about certain members of the republican party in the context of a potential vice president joel pick. >> and of course, those advisers then go to michael bender of the "new york times," which i think informed your story, which really kind of splits things into four categories. i don't walk people through them right now. you want to start with the political veterans. you have people like senator tim scott who just dropped out of the republican primary, nikki haley who has consolidated the number two position. senator tim cotton, marco rubio, mike pompeo. what should people know about this group? >> this is a group that's going to add some heft to the ticket. some -- one of the sort of eye tests for the american public when it comes to a presidential pick is can they imagine that person taking over in the white house. usually, some kind of experience adds to that, enhances that viewpoint, you know, i think marco rubio is someone who has kind of flown under the radar here. someone who's been very close to trump, kind of quietly over the years. and you know, obviously, nikki haley is running against trump right now, and does seem to be the, you know, have the momentum as the main rival. i would just say that, you know, mike pence endorsed ted cruz in 2016, who was trump's main rival. that didn't hurt him in the end. but we'll have to see how this all plays out with haley and trump. >> what about the loyalists? this is something that everybody pays attention to, j.d. vance, kristi noem, john ratcliffe, kari lake, vivek ramaswamy. what do you think out of this? >> the important thing to think about this group, in years past, in the pre-trump era of american presidential politics, we've looked at vice presidential picks as what state can they wring. someone who's in a battleground state or add an east coast candidate who can bring the south, or something like that. that is not necessarily the way trump is thinking about this. for one, there's little evidence that there is much political sway. that home state voters will support a ticket, just because of the vice presidential ticket. because of the vice presidential pick? the thing that is more important to trump is someone who can be 100% behind him and supportive all the time. all of these folks fall into that category. >> i want to combine the last two groups, because i think they do kind of thread together. and that is to start with, the up-and-comers, stephanie tooudo dickson, leslie pace in the congress. and wild cards, people like tucker carlson, senator rick scott, marjory taylor green, should people view these as actual serious candidates? >> well, you know, there is some seriousness to it. for one, we know that trump has talked to people about adding tucker carlson to the ticket. now, again, contrast that with the tucker carlson has never run for anything before, but he's popular within the base. he is someone that has a good relationship with trump. and this is kind of the x-factor here, when you were talking about someone like donald trump and who they could pick, it's a pretty wide field, as far as possibilities for him. and you know, he does not want to be boxed in when it comes to his potential choices. >> mike bender, "new york times," we appreciate you, as always. thanks, my friend. >> nice to see you, phil. >> really interesting. congressman george santos, he could face a vote for expulsion this week as the house comes back in session. we have his reaction to that vote, ahead. and it's the final day of the four-day truce between israel and hamas. both sides signaling they are interested in an extension. a source tells cnn there's a slight issue with the list of hostages and palestinian prisoners set to be released. it could delay today's swawap. we'll l have the l latest, next. well, embattled congressman george santos could face an expulsion vote this week when the house returns. >> i know i'm going to get expelled when this expulsion resolution goes to the floor, because people are so quick to judge. you want to expel me? i'll wear it like a badge of honor. >> that is one approach. expulsion is extremely rare and requires a two-thirds majority vote. so far, 13 republican lawmakers have said they approve expulsion santos saying there's substantial evidence he violated federal law. the report alleges that santos used large sums of campaign money to pay for personal expenses such as botox, lurks goods, and an only fans account. he's planning to hold a news conference in front of the capitol on thursday. today, the biggest online shopping day of the year, americans expected to shell out a record $12 billion online. that is -- 5% more than last year according to adobe analytics. that is if emerging signs of some consumer stress don't hurt those sales to lure shoppers. retailers are expected to offer deep discounts of up to 35% online, big bargains expected on toys, apparel, electronics. adobe also reports black friday online sales were strong, jumping 7.5% from last year to a record $9.8 billion. in-store sales only up about 1%. that's not adjusted for inflation, though, according to mastercard. and "cnn this morning" continues right now. good morning, everyone. we are so glad you're with us on this monday. right now, we are in the final hours of a four-day truce between israel and hamas. a source tells cnn, a slight issue, though, has come up that could delay today's hostage release. the white house tells us it is unknown if anyone american
