viers in the united states and around the world. cnn goes to what is said as a hamas tunnel shaft. mile wins the argentina presidency. he ran on inflammatory claims he will break the status quo. and former u.s. first lady, rosalynn carter has died at the age of 96. we'll look at her remarkable regularcy. the israeli military is releasing new video from near al-shifa hospital in gaza city. as pressure mounts for israel to show more evidence of its claims that the hospital was the site of an underground command center for hamas. the video that runs over three minutes was filmed by the israel defense forces on friday and shows the inside of a tunnel shaft on the hospital's grounds. israel has long said that hamas uses the hospital to cover up what it says is an extensive terror infrastructure underground, something hamas and hospital officials deny. the idf is accusing hamas of kiing an army corporal at the hospital. refuting a claim that she died as an israeli air strike. the body was recovered last week in gaza city. orren lieberman entered gaza to see the tunnel shaft and what lies beneath. cnn reported from gaza under idf escort at all times. as a condition for journalists to join this embed, media outlets had to submit footage to the israeli military for review. cnn maintained final review of the report. >> reporter: as we cross the border fence, it's lights out across the gadza strip. we switch to an armored personnel carrier. you kecan see the magnitude of e destruction. we offlead at the hospital and pick our away. we have to keep our lights off most of the time or risk exposing our position. cnn reported from gaza under idf escort at all times. cnn has to submit film to israeli censors for review. we wait inside a structure to make sure the area is secure. here's the entrance. you can see what looks like a ladder access into it. as i step over here, it's difficult to see how far down it goes. it looks almost a central shaft or a staircase. the shaft of it disappears into the darkness. we move around the opening. what is clear is this is meant to go deep underground. which direction does the tunnel go? we assume that the tunnel goes out and had a corridor this way. >> towards the hospital. >> it connects the hospital to outside. it implies that hamas is going out and to the forces, going back inside to a safe place. >> reporter: we weren't allowed to enter the shaft. but the israeli military sent a video down. and as the camera orients itself, it moves forward in a tunnel. the tunnel makes a left turn. at the end of another path, that metal door they have not opened because they fear it's boobie trapped. some of the israeli hostages taken on october 7th were brought through the hospital. he says the body was discovered 50 meters from the compound. >> if we have evidence they were holding hostages. and they were bringing to shifa hospital. >> reporter: this is not proof. but israel is continuing to build its case that hamas uses the sanctuary of the hospital for cover, which hamas and hospital officials have denied. the ability to continue the operation in gaza and the credibility of israel are at stake here, as the number killed in the fighting surpasses 12,000. according to the hamas ministry of health. idf says one of its missions is to destroy hamas. with criticism mounting, it has to show that it is using civilians and infrastructure to cover and justify an ongoing war. oren leibermann, cnn, gaza. the idf has released videos and stills it claims show hamas brings hostages into the hospital on the day of the attack on october 7th. cnn cannot confirm the identity of the people in the videos. cnn cannot independently verify the content of the videos or the series of events the idf said took place. according to the idf, this cctv video shows a hostage being brought in through the hospital's main entrance that day. you can see a man is frog marched through building. this other video shows a second hostage. that person has a bandaged hand is being pushed on a gurnee down a hospital hallway and into a room. the hamas-run gaza health ministry is questioning the authenticity of the videos and stills. they show that hospitals were providing medical care to anyone that needed it. sources tell cnn that a deal to secure the release of hostages that hamas is holding could be days away. a recent draft of a possible deal proposes a four-day or five-day pause in exchange for the release of some 50 hostages. >> reporter: negotiators working on the release of hostages expressed rare optimism over the weekend about the direction of the talks. sources say the deal includes a four-day or five-day pause and potentially more pauses thereafter. the sources stress that no deal has been struck yet. and text has been going back and forth for weeks, underscoring how delicate and intensive these talks have been. deputy national security adviser john finer said on cnn that disagreements have been narrowed down. they are the closest they have been since these negotiations started. he went on to say that nothing is agreed upon until everything is agreed upon, again showing how difficult this is for everyone involved. as an example, hamas stepped away or went dark from the negotiations once when israel raided al-shifa hospital. another key issue that sortses pointed to, was how to implement the deal. u.s. officials have stressed this is something they are working on over the course of multiple days. the president said he couldn't share anything as of let. all of this is going on behind the scenes as they try to reach some resolution on the hostages still held by hamas. priscilla alvarez, cnn, the white house. every november 20th, the united nations celebrates children's day. this year's theme is for every child, every right. right now in gaza, unicef says there's more than 700,000 children who are displaced and there's grave violations occurring in the enclave. and doctors treating neonatal babies evacuated say they are fighting serious infections and 11 are in critical condition. the u.n. rights chief says the pain, dread and fear etched on the faces of children, women and men is too much to bear. this must stop. unicef's chief of communications, toby fricker, joins me from amman, jordan. toby. thank you for your time. we're talking to you right now on world children's day. this is when the world is witnessing, in real-time, basically, the immense collective suffering of children in gaza. there's the unknown fate of children that have been abducted and kept in gaza. give us a sense of how this war is shaping children in gaza. >> yeah, thank you. it is a tragic world children's day. children inside the gaza strip going through horrors, day in and day out. it's sad. we did a film with our partners inside the gaza strip, asking the children what were their dreams before this happened. wanting to get a skateboard. wanting to get a bicycle. any child in israel. any child anywhere, would want. it's been horrific to see what's happening. the situation is getting worse rather than better. we had a horrific 48 hours. seen the conditions where people are sheltering getting worse and worse. heavy rains today, this morning. one of the positives is the 31 premature babies were moved to another hospital that has better conditions and are being stabilized now. we hope the 31 babies can survive and be cared for as they should be. >> yes. we hope they will be well. in the words of your colleague at unicef, gaza has become a graveyard for children. we've seen children walking around dazed with burns and injuries. alone, looking for their family. can you tell us what happens to them for those separated from their loved ones? or are the sole survivor of their family? >> it's a critical question. the hostilities have been so intense, that our normal work, in the terms of unaccompanied and separated children, where we work with partners to identify who is the child. you can we trace the extremed family. we set up hubs in hospitals or hubs in the shelters where people are. because it's been chaotic, overcrowded, so many injuries, the hospitals have not been safe, that work is difficult. we're trying to do that working with partners on the ground, with 31 premature babies to identify where their parents are. are there family members around. doing that work is vital. you've seen children who are dazed, alone. a man is carrying a baby. i don't know whose baby this is. this work is critical. we tried to scale that up. that's an area of work that unicef does across conflict zones. we're trying to identify and reunify children as quick as possible. >> there's also the horrifying situation of children that's been abducted and we don't know where they are. what is being done to secure their safe return? >> at unicef we called for the unconditional release of the hostages, particularly children. they need to be at home. there's a lot of work going on to do that. and we really hope, it's world children's day today. we hope that can happen. these are children that need to be back at home with their families. toby, thank you so much. >> thank you. up next, humanitarian activist and former u.s. first lady rosalynn carter dies at the age of 96. how her impact is being felt longng according to the center. wolf blitzer has more on rosalynn carter's life and legacy. >> reporter: a soft-spoken small-town girl, rosalynn carter was one of the most charming first ladies. born in plains, georgia, she was valedictorian of her high school class and met jimmy carter when he was in the u.s. navy. >> i love and respect and cherish and honor my wife, rosalynn. >> reporter: when his father died in 1953, they moved back to plains to manage the family's peanut farm. >> i didn't want to go home. i thought i had outgrown plains, georgia. i had gotten too big for my britches. >> reporter: they had four children, three boys and one daughter. jimmy carter entered politics and rosalynn hit the campaign trail. >> campaigning was fun up to a certain point. i got to travel and see the whole country. the most fun are the people you meet. >> reporter: she supported her husband's bids to become governor of georgia and later president of the united states. >> reporter: mrs. carter was an active member of the presidency. she was a strong advocate for equal treatment for the mentally ill. >> if they had coverage for the mental illness, the overall health care costs could come down. >> reporter: when the carters left the white house in 1981, they spearheaded a new challenge, habitat for humanity, building houses for the poor. >> the whole community has come together to get rid of poverty. >> reporter: a year later, they established the carter center, a foundation devoted to promoting human rights, resolving conflicts and eradicating diseases. mrs. carter continued to reducing the focus of stigma of mental illness. >> really proud of you. impressed with what you can do. >> reporter: another focus, care giving, a focus close to her heart. >> it's been part of my life since i was 12 years old. and my father was diagnosed with leukemia. we lived in a small town. and all of the neighbors rallied around. i vividly remember going to my secret hiding place to cry. where i could be alone. >> reporter: in 1999, rosalynn and jimmy carter were honored with the medal of freedom, the nation's highest honor for civilians. >> rosalynn and i have visited 115 nations in the world. alread >> reporter: mrs. carter was often irritated that her husband was praised after the administration. she accepted that was politics. >> doesn't matter what you do. you're going to be criticized for it. do what you want to do. >> reporter: they were a remarkably close first couple. jimmy carter used to say rosalynn was much more than his wife. >> it es ooh always rosalynn to whom i turn for the primary advice. she's the matriarch. they know they will get a sympathetic ear. >> reporter: she remained by his side, occasionally joining with other first families. supporting each other in their twilight. she was dementia and mr. carter in hospice. and in the 39th president, rosalynn carter got more than just a husband. >> my life with jimmy carter is more adventurous than i dreamed it would be. joining me now is kate anderson braugher, author of "first women: grace and power." a somber moment but what a full life. she was an influential figure in president carter's career. she also paved her own way. what do you think her legacy of first lady is? >> she was a transformative first lady. she really took the job incredibly serious. in terms of professionalizing the role of first lady. she would go to her east wing office every day. she had a secret way of getting there, through the basement to avoid crowds. she expanded the number of aides the first lady could have. and she made sure the chief of staff to the first lady got paid the same as the president's chief of staff. she made the point that the responsibility is a serious one. her greatest legacy will be her mental health work. she was talking about meme health in the '70s when few people were talking about it. it's now a major issue around the cloeb. the fact she was open and honest is really her greatest legacy. >> very ground-breaking for that time. what were the obstacles she faced? >> so many. i enter viewed her a few times for a couple of my books. one recently in 2018. i interviewed mrs. and president carter in their home in plains. and talked to her about the role of first lady and what she thought about president trump. jimmy carter said trump isn't that bad. ronald reagan lied, too. and rosalynn carter playfully touched his elbow and said, jimmy, this is very different. what president trump is doing is nothing like what ronald reagan did. she could talk bluntly and openly and honestly. when she was first lady she would sit in on cabinet meetings and was criticized for that. she said, no matter what you do, you will be criticized and you might as well do what you want. that's a powerful message that other first ladies have followed. >> powerful, indeed. we cannot speak about the first lady without, you know, discussing the presidential couple. what made the carter union, according to you, stand out when it comes to public service? >> they actually were each other's best friends. they gave each other space. they wrote one book together. and that one book was the closest they ever came to getting a divorce. she would write her sections under rosalynn and his would be under jimmy because they had different stiles of writing. they talked about the difficulties in their marriage. they were together longer than most people live. it's a long, long marriage. ups and downs. there were times when she felt she wasn't getting the respect and attention she deserved. i think in the end he realized what an asset she was. she would campaign tirelessly for him. she was more political than he was. she was a very strategic thinker. she would give him advice that went contrary to his own moral compass. he wanted to cut funding ahead of the new york primaries. she said, you can't do that because it will impact your polling numbers and your votes. there was time when she was the one that was very grounded in politics. they worked together beautifully. >> as you described there, they complemented each other. do we whoa what the funeral arrangements are? >> reporter: next week she will be in repose at the carter presidential center in atlanta. that will be after thanksgiving. and a couple of days later, on the wednesday, not this wednesday, but the following wednesday because of the holiday, she will be buried in plains, georgia. and she will be at a church that's special to the family. >> thank you so much for sharing some of your interactions
