i'd be telling bibi finish the job once and for all with these butchers hamas. >> do you want dick cheney in 3 inch heels? you've got two of them on stage tonight. >> and they are 5 inch heels. >> hamas, high heels and entiktok. republicans not named trump debate for more than an hour and a half before even mentioning the issue that sunk their party on tuesday. abortion. good morning to our viewers in the united states and around the world. i'm kasie hunt. it is thursday, november 9. the morning after. five republican presidential contenders duked it out on the big stage in miami. foreign policy took the spotlight at the third republican debate. the candidates all agreed on supporting israel and opposing hamas, iran and china. >> we have to stay as strong with our jewish americans. >> hamas should release every hostage and surrender. >> china is buying oil from iran, russia is getting drones and missiles from iran and there is an unholy alliance a. >> all critical issues of course. but it was abortion rights that won major victories for democrats in multiple states earlier this week and cost the republicans extraordinarily key seats. the issue though was missing for the first 99 minutes of the debate. also missing, donald trump. he held a rally nearby. and there were a few jabs at him by his rivals. but honestly, not that many. >> he owes it to you to be on this stage and explain why he should get another chance. he should explain why he doesn't have mexico pay for the border wall. he should explain why he racked up so much debt. >> but the most tense moments came during several exchanges between vivek ramaswamy and nikki haley. and it was centered on tiktok. >> in the last debate, she made fun of me for joining tiktok while her own daughter was actually using the app for a long time. so you might want to take care of your family first. >> leave my daughter out of your voice. >> the next generation of americans are using it. and that is actually the point. here is the truth -- >> you're just scum. >> and we have an all-star panel early with us this morning to talk about all of this. alex stewart, doug heye and also tia mitchell. good morning. so grateful to have you here. doug, let me start with you because things got pretty heated between nikki haley and vivek ramaswamy. he, you know -- haley took the attacks in real stride i would say. i'm not sure vivek came off great. what is your view on how he handled himself? >> i can't think of a time when anybody said that vie secretary hasecretary -- vie have a vehicle handled himself well. the reaction that voters had, reaction that vir viewers had i that he reminds me of that smart-aleck little brother in that movie i didn't really like. and that is a problem if he wants to do anything but sell vitamin supplements and go on a book tour. if you want to have a serious debate, he is not gour your guy it. is he smart but not ultimately somebody who will move the party forward. >> i think one of the critical things too for winning elections is likability. and i don't know if that meets the moment there. i want to show you something he said that is getting a lot of attention. his campaign already tried to walk it back and claim that he didn't say what he said. i want you to look at what vivek ramaswamy had to see you about volodymyr zelenskyy. watch. >> ukraine is not a paragon of democracy. this is a country that has beened 11 opposition is party, consolidated all media in on one state media arm. that is not democratic. it has threatened not to hold elections unless the u.s. forkses over money. it has celebrated a nazi, a man called zelenskyy, doing it in their own ranks. that is not democratic. >> so the campaign is now claiming that he was actually talking about zelenskyy applauding a former ukrainian nazi when he was in can in a taa -- canada. but he is buying into the way that putin frankly is talking about ukraine. >> absolutely. he is on an island in the xwop party when it comes to his lack of support for ukraine and the need to support ukraine and fighting for democracy. >> is he on an island though? i'm struck by him picking up this sort of pro putin messaging that -- honestly a ton of people in congress who won't vote to send more aid to ukraine but he's out there saying it. >> he's been out there much earlier than many people, but what we're hearing from many people in congress, they just want more accountability. tell us where the money is going, let us be more transparent and we'll be more supportive of putting this aid to ukraine because it is a fight for democracy. it is not charity. it is to help protect democracy across the world. and also another takeaway on vivek ramaswamy. no disputing the fact he wants to be the king of wokeness on the stage and he articulates that in every debate. but when he goes -- we heard him go after nikki haley and he also went after kristen welker one of the moderators, after nikki haley's daughter, he went after ronna mcdaniel blaming her for all the republican losses. that is not anything less than just a chauvinist pig against women blaming women for all the ails of the republican party when we know that donald trump is the anchor for the republican party right now. so i don't see how that will help boost him with women voters by any stretch of the imagination. certainly not going to win him any points with rational voters who are looking at him as someone who might be the standard bearer for this party moving forward. >> and i'm so glad you pointed that out because there were plenty of men available on stage for him to attack and we did not see him do that in nearly the terms that he attacked the women that you listed. tia, stand by, we have to take a quick break and we'll have more with the panel. nikki haley and ron desantis alsoso getting i into it over c. we'll l show it toto you. i was watching these guys. they are not watchable. somebody said oh, one of the consumer on dumber ones, he doe have the courage to stand up. listen, i'm standing in front of tens of thousands of people right now and it is on television. that is a hell of a lot harder do than a debate. >> okay. let's bring back in the panel. tia, i want to note the a.p. reported that the arena where he was held 5200 people and not all the seats were full so it was a bit of exaggeration of who was in that room. but the bottom line reality, this was -- the debate was attack of the undercard, if you will. and so far they haven't been able to actually break out in a way that is fundamentally changed the race and actually taken on donald trump. how much did last night matter in the end? >> well, you know, that is a hard question because i don't want to say debates don't matter. i don't want to say that there are no undecided voters or persuadable voters. but a lot of republicans have already made up their minds. polls are just snapshots and not predictors, but the polls have been consistent both nationally and in the key early states that trump is the frontrunner barring just a meltdown he is expected to win this republican nomination. now, i think where this matters is -- i know it keeps being said, but it is true, what is the people on the stage of the debate last night are really competing for is to be that challenger to trump, to be that second option, to see if voters at some point do start looking for a trump alternative. so that to me is what these debates are about right now, especially with trump choosing not to be on stage. >> so doug heye to that point, let's talk about how that race is shaking out. ron desantis had been, you know, the front runner in the race for number two. what was your sense of whether or not desantis did anything to change the reality that he has been following when compared with nikki haley and how did haley do in her quest to solidify potential lie status in the race for the top of number two is this. >> i got an email from a friend who worked for the ready for hillary startup campaign who said i haven't heard anybody talk about this campaign the way ron attentiondesantis did. and two hours later didn't hear from her again. that is what we see, fits and starts of people who want to run against donald trump but ultimately don't. and if we go back to when donald trump was indicted the first time, second time, third time, pick your time, it is that rm candidates, people say who that they are running against donald trump ultimately aren't. they have not only failed to go after donald trump when he was at his most vulnerable, they made sure that donald trump was and remained the frontrunner by shoring up and reinforcing his key messaging. so if you want to play basketball midway through the fourth quarter, you will find you are 40 points behind and it is difficult to get over that margin. and that means that you are running where hope is a strategy and hope is never a strategy politically. i think that we saw that best or sort of didn't see it best when it came to tim scott. tim scott was one of my favorite members of congress when he was in the house. he is a great senator. but i ultimately why is he runng for president? i think it is tough for he and his campaign to ultimately answer. >> alice, weigh in. >> the goal right now for any of those on the stage is to take out donald trump. and the debate moderators last night served up the question on the silver platter and some hit the ball, some of them chose not to. but the goal really from here on out is every single time you have the opportunity to go after donald trump, you do so. and there are many opportunities to do so. nikki haley has continued to hit him on how he contributed to the debt. desantis hits him on how donald trump is a loser and desantis has won. many can hit him on the fact that he never built the wall mexico was going to pay for. issue after issue. and most specifically, donald trump is spending his time in a court room and not on the campaign trail and how is he going to help the american people when he is fighting for his own freedom and not for the american people. chris christie is the only one thatcontinuously goes after donald trump. 65 days from the iowa caucus, this is becoming more and moren a opportunity. we need to find consensus candidate. get the republican party united to take out donald trump and ultimately take out joe biden or whoever the democratic candidate will be come november. >> and so we shall see. stand by. you'll be here throughout the hour with much more analysis. but we do want to go to israel because secretary of state antony blinken is mapping out the wish for a post-war gaza one that empowers palestinians in government. >> we must also work on the affirmative elements to get to a sustained peace. these must include the palestinian people voices and aspirations at the center of post crisis governance in gaza and sustained mechanism for reconstruction and pathway to israelis and palestinians living side by side in states of their own with equal measures of security, freedom, opportunity and dignity. >> and this is as israeli forces claim they destroyed a hamas tunnel near a u.n. school in gaza. let's bring in gustavo valdes who is live for us in tel aviv. obviously blinken's comments in response to what the prime minister benjamin netanyahu had to say about a potential occupation essentially by the israelis in gaza. how is this playing out in israel? >> reporter: the idea is to find out what that post-offensive will look like. netanyahu made it clear that they believe that they should have control, security control, over gaza at least for the foreseeable future. blinken and the rest of the g7 members that he is meeting with in tokyo say perhaps a short period of time is necessary, but they believe that they control of gaza should be with the palestinian people. right now it is where they allow people from northern gaza to move south. it will be a six hour period. longest so far to allow the movement of people. yesterday they said that 50,000 people were able to move south and many told horror stories of how everything that they left behind is destroyed and they don't believe that they can go back to their normal lives once the conflict comes to a stop. meanwhile they are ongoing negotiations to come a way to come on too a ceasefire, how thy can make sure that the hostages are released and israel can agree to a ceasefire. so far very elusive. >> all right. gustavo valdes, thank you very much for that report. trump's attorneys preparing to mount their defense at the former president's civil fraud trial after ivanka trump's testimony, that is next. welcome back. hits across america. team trump set to begin its defense at the civil fraud trial. the prosecution rested after ivanka trump testified. house your sight committee has issued subpoenas to hunter and james biden, the president's son and brother. they are looking to see if there is an impeachable defense tied to his fame busiily businesses. and a stellantis plant set to reopen in belvedere, and biden was the first to walk a picket line during the six week strike. more report breaking heat expected today. and remember it is november. let's get to the weatherman derek van dam. good morning. always good to see you. these temperatures are kind of nuts. >> yeah, november all-time records. so you will take the shorts and t-shirts and throw them back into the closet for next year and pull out the flannels because the cold front is coming. look at wichita falls, 91 beating not only a daily record but monthly record. and hire is the change. if you are in memphis, just one example, you've been enjoying the lower 80s all week, but look where you are headed, 58 for friday and you can see where the cold front is located, separation between the warmth and the cooler weather across the central parts of the u.s. there is the progression of the front through the weekend. and thank goodness this cold front is going to bring drought relief to the southeast. but northern new england, you have and yo few snowflakes flyi the sky. and rain and snow and perhaps ice in and around albany. and this is all rain across texas, a larger storm system that help cool our temperatures. in steeoutheast, it hasn't rain in nearly a month. so no wonder that we have drought conditions that continue to broaden and kind of expand in reach across the area. we need the rain. we'll take it. even though it will be light, it is still saying something. >> i for one am not ready for a wintry mix, so i'm glad it is still up in new england. but we'll see. derek, thank you very much. so who do you think came out on top in round three among the republican presidential hopefuls not named trump? we'll walk you through all the fireworks from last night's debate. and the u.s. strikes an iranian weapons facility following the atattacks on u.s. troops i in iraq andnd syria. in the last debate, she made fun of me for joining tick dog. her own daughter was actually using the app for a long time so you might want to take care of your family first. >> leave my daughter out of your voice. >> next generation of americans are using it and that is actually the point. we have supporters propping her up, that is fine. but here is the truth -- >> good morning. i'm kasie hunt. just after 5:30 here on the east coast. a few hours after that moment where things got personal between nikki haley and vivek ramaswamy about tiktok. the five candidates not named trump agree that supporting israeli was the right thing. but abortion rights not even mentioned until more than 90 minutes in to the debate despite democrats winning multiple victories in tuesday's elections. >> i challenge nicki and ron to join me in the 15 week limit. it is in our nation's best interests. >> and so what was the man who was missing from the stage doing? he held a rally nearby. he was -- honestly, got you through the debate pretty unsc unscathed. take a look. >> he said republicans would get tired of winning. we saw last night i'm sick of republicans losing. >> and so i do want to zero in on abortion. and we heard what tim scott had to say there calling for the 15 week ban. that is what glenn youngkin ran on in virginia. i want to show everybody more of how the candidates talked about abortion once they did get to it in the back half of the debate and then we'll talk about it, take a look. >> we need a 15 week federal limit, three out of four americans agree with a 15 week limit. i would challenge both nicki and ron to join me at a 15 week limit. >> as much as i'm pro-life, i don't judge anyone for being pro-choice and i don't want them to judge me for being pro-life. so when we're looking at this, there are some states going more on the pro-life side. i welcome that. more are on the pro-choice side. i wish that wasn't the case but the people decided. >> so very interesting. nikki haley has been taking a very interesting stand on abortion in the way that she talks about it, very distinct. and bottom line is this was a losing issue for republicans across the country on the ballot on tuesday. what were your takeaways from how the republican candidates handled it last night? >> that is absolutely right. what we saw tuesday was governor glenn young cuoungkin of virgin staked his capital on the fact that the 15 week limit would help neutralize the issue for republicans. but instead we saw democrats make major gains in the legislature there. and now we have the same argument playing out on the national stage. scott saying that 15 weeks is where the nation needs to be. anti-abortion groups are also called to national defender of life at 15 beaks. but that is not what the voters are requesting for. you had ohio saying they want it to be protected up to the moment of fetal viability, 22, 24 weeks. so republicans have a lot of thinking do on what is the -- what is the place, where is the argument for how to neutralize this, how to get to this in 2024. because if we don't figure it out, we'll see more democratic issues passing and this issue will continue to follow them. >> that is a good point. democrats and abortion rights groups are already working overtime to get the issue basically on as many ballots as possible. big picture from last night, briefly, vivek ramaswamy had a lot of attacks on women specifically. what did you make of that? >> it is interesting. yeah, we had the dick cheney and 3 inch heels comments, we had him from the beginning going after ronna mcdaniel, blaming her for republican losses even though a lot happened when trump was in office. it is hard to say why he went that route. we have seen him sort of go back and forth sort of trolling to try to be everyone on stage is a good person and then this time it seemed like he just wanted to go after anyone and everyone who wasn't donald trump. >> and there were three moderators for the debate, two men, within woman, and who got talked, the woman sitting there as representative of the media. thank you for being up early with us. our panel is back. let's talk about abortion. i want to show what ron desantis said about what happened in ohio and other states on this issue. take a look. >> of all the stuff that has happened in the pro-life cause, they have been caught flat footed and they are losing the referrenda. >> so are they caught flat flooted? >> the reality is when the dobbs decision was came or leaked, eventually the dog caught the bumper and republicans doesn't know what to do. and there is a challenge with that. you have 50 states with legislatures within them, which means that there are 50 different possible answers. and i think part of what we saw in virginia just this week is that what gleb ynn young kin is talking about can be defined by what is happening in south carolina or alabama or any other state easy for democrats to say he is talking about 15 weeks now, but that could mean with a republican legislature that that is 8 weeks, 10 weeks, 6 week. and that is political quick sand for republicans. >> alice, what did you make of how nikki haley handled the issue. she does take a distinctly different approach than the other candidates on the stage. >> she hit the nail on the head on the issue. every person on that stage has been a strong supporter of the sanctity of life and every person wanted for see roe v. wade overturned. but you also have to acknowledge the political reality of what has happened since the abortion ban was overturned. every time this has been on the ballot, people in the individual states have voted to protect abortion rights in the states and that is what republicans want and pro-life republicans wanted is to take this issue out of the hands of unelected justices and put it in the hands of people in the states. now that they have it, they are protecting abortion rights. and nikki haley said he let's not judge those who are pro-life or those who are pro-choice but let's find a rational and meaningful limit on abortions that we can all agree to, not only that, let's be honest with the american people. what could pass in the u.s. senate? what could pass in the house, what could be signed by a president and whether or not that is a 15 week abortion limit, whether that is a six week limit, let's find what works to protect the sanctity of life and let's also protect -- make sure that we have a ceiling on what is too far to allow abortions. and i think that that is the sweet spot on this very difficult very emotional issue and also a way to be honest with the american people without this continuing to be a losing issue for republicans. >> i think americans have been pretty clear about a six week ban in particular which is honestly way before women even realize that they are pregnant. tia, this issue promises to be one -- not just going to be what t candidates have to say. we know donald trump has tried to stake out a more moderate position on abortion despite bragging that he stacked the court to overturn roe v. wade. but your paper is based in a key squink state, right? where the margins are incredibly narrow. there will be a handful of such states that decide the presidential election. in arizona for example, there is going to be a ballot measure on abortion. democrats are looking at this and saying that this is a way to turn out more democratic voters who care about that ballot measure and that will ultimately affect the top of the ticket. what is your sense of how much that might matter here? >> right, it is two things. it is the policy itself, this we know that women, progressive voters, younger voters, there is a big coalition that wants to protect access to abortions. and as you said, don't necessarily trust that republicans in power won't do everything that they can to limit abortion but also democrats believe when abortion is on the ballot, it helps with turnout for other races. for example in virginia, in states like florida, they think if there is abortion referendum it can help again with that key coalition particularly younger voters that sometimes need extra encouragement to show up at the polls. at the end of the day when the abortion has been on the ballot either with a referendum or things like supreme court elections, gubernatorial races and balance of power in state legislatures, democrats have won on the issue every time. they are keenly aware of that, so of course if it is not broke, don't fix it. they will keep running on abortion. >> panel, stay with us. we'll have much more with the panel. and first though, we'll get quick hits across the globe. u.s. launched an airstrike on a weapons storage facility used by iran andoaffiliated groups in eastern syria a response to the attacks on u.s. troops in iraq and syria. and minnesota supreme court is keeping donald trump's name on the primary ballot despite an insurrectionist ban challenge. the court said the challengers can try again if trump wins and appears on the general election ballot. and hollywood actors have reached a tentative deal with major tv and film studios ending their strike that started in may. details have not been disclosed. sag-aftra says they are thrilled with the agreement. and just over two months from the iowa caucuses and donald trump skips another debate. does it even make a difference? we'll have that next. i'll tell you this, if someone in the drug cartels is sneaking fentanyl across the border when i'm president, that will be the last thing they will do. we'll shoot them stone cold dead. >> a lot to unpack there. let's bring back our panel. doug, some strong rhetoric on immigration. obviously an issue that republicans want to focus on. voters -- polls tell us voters are not happy with what the biden administration is doing on immigration. is what ron desantis said there the answer? >> certainly an answer to some part of the electorate, but ultimately a lot of this is going to be forgotten. it may influence where the party moves a bit when trump is the nominee because nothing is changing for donald trump not to be the nominee. the "washington post" tweeted most memorable lines and is there a specific line from any debate that any voters remember a week from now? no. and because republican candidates have refused to at that time gloves off and go after donald trump. and they have reinforced him and shored him up to make sure that he will be the next nominee. and it really leads to the question of why are so many of them runs. and there is not a really good answer for that. >> i'm really glad that you brought that up because i do have -- to the extent that there were attacks on donald trump in this debate, and there have been more attacks as it becomes clear what they are doing against trump is not working. some have tried to start taking him on. but let's show you what they did have to say and we'll talk about it on the other side. watch. >> donald trump's a lot different guy than he was in 2016. he owes it to you to be on this stage and explain why he should get another chance. he should explain why he didn't have mexico pay for the border wall. he should explain why he racked up so many debt. he should explain why he didn't drant drain the swarm. >> i think he was the right president at the right time. i don't think that he is the right president now. he put us $8 trillion in debt. i think he is trying to be friendly again. >> and so as far as attacks go, you know, nikki haley says not the right president now. oh, great when he was president but i'm going to try to attack him. and they are not talking about what is clearly his biggest liability in a general election and that is the four indictments and the possibility that he will be a convicted felon. >> and an attack sugarcoated is hardly an attack. and every time any of these candidates go after donald trump, they put a positive spin on it because they don't want to alienate his base. but the problem is if you are going after donald trump, you have to put that aside and you have to go right in on the attack with him. and there are plenty of other areas to hit him on. i think most compelling argument is him arguing that republicans will be so tired of winning but we're tired of losing. we've lost repeatedly due to donald trump. and not necessarily his policies but his tone and tenor and the way he is conducting himself and choosing candidates that are not going to win. in addition to the fact that his election denying and what he did on january 6 has turned off republican voters an independent voters which will decide the next election. these are avenues of attack that republicans should go on every single time they have the opportunity to go after donald trump because that is what will turn voters that are undecided right now in their favor. as we said, donald trump will spend the next several months in the courtroom and not the campaign trail and so they should seize that and talk about what they can cdo for the american people. >> and so tia, one of the things that struck me as well in these attacks or lack thereof is what the messaging was that came out after the republican losses on tuesday. nikki haley's campaign sent out a press release like isn't it time that we had a nominee who could win a general election. but that was not sharply delivered on the debate stage by anybody except chris christie who is making that attack this entire time. you know, to great unpopularity with the republican base. alice is right that in the trump era democrats have been winning elections, but there does seem to be reluctance from the candidates to he will it their own voters that this has been the case. why? >> and you look at chris christie and the reception he is getting and the other candidates don't want to be in the same position as chris christie. he is not considered the alternative to trump. he is considered kind of the second tier who might not make the next debate stage. i think that is what scares off a lot of the other republicans from going too hard at donald trump. at the end of the day, it is not where the base of the party is. quite frankly i think a lot of republicans believe going too hard against trump is not a winning message in a republican primary. also we have to remember that everyone on that stage has pledged to support the nominee whoever that may be including donald trump. >> and briefly, doug, who do you think drops out next? and i'm curious, do you think if nikki haley was one-on-one with trump, she would have a shot? is it just a matter of too many people being in the race? >> maybe the first person would be doug burgum who wasn't on the stage and should get out. and tim scott who sort of was on the stage but also should probably get out. if we have an would on one race with trump, some of the contrasts will sharpen. but you have to make them. and what we've seen from. so candidates is what we know doesn't work. hope is not a strategy and hope is not a way to win. they all hope that they can outlast everyone else to be that person to take on donald trump, but this nomination doesn't go around donald trump, it goes through impeach. you're a big star wars began. luke skywalker had to take on darth vader. he couldn't sit back and hope that han solo can take him on for it. >> not the first time that has been mentioned on this show. thank you all very much for being up early with us. and coming up on cnn this morni morning, ivanka trump on the stand in the case against her father. c'mon, we're right there. c'mon baby. it's the only we need. go, go, go, go! ah! touchdown baby! -touchdown! are your neighbors watching the same game? yeah, my 5g home internet delays the game a bit. but you get used to it. try these. they're noise cancelling earmuffs. i stole them from an airport. it's always something with you, man. great! solid! -greek salad? exactly! don't delay the game with verizon or t-mobile 5g home internet. catch it on the xfinity 10g network. much need break from politics now. a busy night in the nba. reigning champs outlasting the warriors. andy scholes has more in the "bleacher report." always great to see you. >> good to see you too. denver nuggets picked up right where they left off after winning the title last season. haven't lost at home this season so far. last night they were hosting the warriors, the game coming down to the final moments. steph with the steal here and he will drill the three. that cuts the lead to two. so now down three in the final seconds, jackson misses the free throw. and chris paul grabs the rebound, and ahead to klay thompson but can't get a good grip on it, nuggets win 108-105. and two eastern conference powerhouses also squaring off. 6ers hosting the celtics. boston rallying down 15 with under four minutes to go and porzingis has a chance to tie it, but the shot no good. 76ers hold on to win by three. and victor wembanyama made his madison square garden debut. he said before the game msg was smaller than he expected. well, knicks fans don't want to hear anything negative about their home. they chanted overrated during parts of the game. wasn't a stellar first game for wemby. he didn't make a shot until the third quarter. knicks got the win 126-105. and also the uconn superstar playing her first sxwgame in 58 games after a torn acl. she scored eight points in the win over dayton. and becker actually called it a bad game for her but added that she's just grateful to have a fwad bad game after so long. >> yeah, takes a lot of grit to come back from an injury like that. and i have to say, i'm not as read in on the nba as i am on many of the other sports you cover. so i appreciate you carrying us through this particular point in the sports season. >> not a problem. >> and i lov

i'd be telling bibi finish the job once and for all with these butchers hamas. >> do you want dick cheney in 3 inch heels? you've got two of them on stage tonight. >> and they are 5 inch heels. >> hamas, high heels and entiktok. republicans not named trump debate for more than an hour and a half before even mentioning the issue that sunk their party on tuesday. abortion. good morning to our viewers in the united states and around the world. i'm kasie hunt. it is thursday, november 9. the morning after. five republican presidential contenders duked it out on the big stage in miami. foreign policy took the spotlight at the third republican debate. the candidates all agreed on supporting israel and opposing hamas, iran and china. >> we have to stay as strong with our jewish americans. >> hamas should release every hostage and surrender. >> china is buying oil from iran, russia is getting drones and missiles from iran and there is an unholy alliance a. >> all critical issues of course. but it was abortion rights that won major victories for democrats in multiple states earlier this week and cost the republicans extraordinarily key seats. the issue though was missing for the first 99 minutes of the debate. also missing, donald trump. he held a rally nearby. and there were a few jabs at him by his rivals. but honestly, not that many. >> he owes it to you to be on this stage and explain why he should get another chance. he should explain why he doesn't have mexico pay for the border wall. he should explain why he racked up so much debt. >> but the most tense moments came during several exchanges between vivek ramaswamy and nikki haley. and it was centered on tiktok. >> in the last debate, she made fun of me for joining tiktok while her own daughter was actually using the app for a long time. so you might want to take care of your family first. >> leave my daughter out of your voice. >> the next generation of americans are using it. and that is actually the point. here is the truth -- >> you're just scum. >> and we have an all-star panel early with us this morning to talk about all of this. alex stewart, doug heye and also tia mitchell. good morning. so grateful to have you here. doug, let me start with you because things got pretty heated between nikki haley and vivek ramaswamy. he, you know -- haley took the attacks in real stride i would say. i'm not sure vivek came off great. what is your view on how he handled himself? >> i can't think of a time when anybody said that vie secretary hasecretary -- vie have a vehicle handled himself well. the reaction that voters had, reaction that vir viewers had i that he reminds me of that smart-aleck little brother in that movie i didn't really like. and that is a problem if he wants to do anything but sell vitamin supplements and go on a book tour. if you want to have a serious debate, he is not gour your guy it. is he smart but not ultimately somebody who will move the party forward. >> i think one of the critical things too for winning elections is likability. and i don't know if that meets the moment there. i want to show you something he said that is getting a lot of attention. his campaign already tried to walk it back and claim that he didn't say what he said. i want you to look at what vivek ramaswamy had to see you about volodymyr zelenskyy. watch. >> ukraine is not a paragon of democracy. this is a country that has beened 11 opposition is party, consolidated all media in on one state media arm. that is not democratic. it has threatened not to hold elections unless the u.s. forkses over money. it has celebrated a nazi, a man called zelenskyy, doing it in their own ranks. that is not democratic. >> so the campaign is now claiming that he was actually talking about zelenskyy applauding a former ukrainian nazi when he was in can in a taa -- canada. but he is buying into the way that putin frankly is talking about ukraine. >> absolutely. he is on an island in the xwop party when it comes to his lack of support for ukraine and the need to support ukraine and fighting for democracy. >> is he on an island though? i'm struck by him picking up this sort of pro putin messaging that -- honestly a ton of people in congress who won't vote to send more aid to ukraine but he's out there saying it. >> he's been out there much earlier than many people, but what we're hearing from many people in congress, they just want more accountability. tell us where the money is going, let us be more transparent and we'll be more supportive of putting this aid to ukraine because it is a fight for democracy. it is not charity. it is to help protect democracy across the world. and also another takeaway on vivek ramaswamy. no disputing the fact he wants to be the king of wokeness on the stage and he articulates that in every debate. but when he goes -- we heard him go after nikki haley and he also went after kristen welker one of the moderators, after nikki haley's daughter, he went after ronna mcdaniel blaming her for all the republican losses. that is not anything less than just a chauvinist pig against women blaming women for all the ails of the republican party when we know that donald trump is the anchor for the republican party right now. so i don't see how that will help boost him with women voters by any stretch of the imagination. certainly not going to win him any points with rational voters who are looking at him as someone who might be the standard bearer for this party moving forward. >> and i'm so glad you pointed that out because there were plenty of men available on stage for him to attack and we did not see him do that in nearly the terms that he attacked the women that you listed. tia, stand by, we have to take a quick break and we'll have more with the panel. nikki haley and ron desantis alsoso getting i into it over c. we'll l show it toto you. i was watching these guys. they are not watchable. somebody said oh, one of the consumer on dumber ones, he doe have the courage to stand up. listen, i'm standing in front of tens of thousands of people right now and it is on television. that is a hell of a lot harder do than a debate. >> okay. let's bring back in the panel. tia, i want to note the a.p. reported that the arena where he was held 5200 people and not all the seats were full so it was a bit of exaggeration of who was in that room. but the bottom line reality, this was -- the debate was attack of the undercard, if you will. and so far they haven't been able to actually break out in a way that is fundamentally changed the race and actually taken on donald trump. how much did last night matter in the end? >> well, you know, that is a hard question because i don't want to say debates don't matter. i don't want to say that there are no undecided voters or persuadable voters. but a lot of republicans have already made up their minds. polls are just snapshots and not predictors, but the polls have been consistent both nationally and in the key early states that trump is the frontrunner barring just a meltdown he is expected to win this republican nomination. now, i think where this matters is -- i know it keeps being said, but it is true, what is the people on the stage of the debate last night are really competing for is to be that challenger to trump, to be that second option, to see if voters at some point do start looking for a trump alternative. so that to me is what these debates are about right now, especially with trump choosing not to be on stage. >> so doug heye to that point, let's talk about how that race is shaking out. ron desantis had been, you know, the front runner in the race for number two. what was your sense of whether or not desantis did anything to change the reality that he has been following when compared with nikki haley and how did haley do in her quest to solidify potential lie status in the race for the top of number two is this. >> i got an email from a friend who worked for the ready for hillary startup campaign who said i haven't heard anybody talk about this campaign the way ron attentiondesantis did. and two hours later didn't hear from her again. that is what we see, fits and starts of people who want to run against donald trump but ultimately don't. and if we go back to when donald trump was indicted the first time, second time, third time, pick your time, it is that rm candidates, people say who that they are running against donald trump ultimately aren't. they have not only failed to go after donald trump when he was at his most vulnerable, they made sure that donald trump was and remained the frontrunner by shoring up and reinforcing his key messaging. so if you want to play basketball midway through the fourth quarter, you will find you are 40 points behind and it is difficult to get over that margin. and that means that you are running where hope is a strategy and hope is never a strategy politically. i think that we saw that best or sort of didn't see it best when it came to tim scott. tim scott was one of my favorite members of congress when he was in the house. he is a great senator. but i ultimately why is he runng for president? i think it is tough for he and his campaign to ultimately answer. >> alice, weigh in. >> the goal right now for any of those on the stage is to take out donald trump. and the debate moderators last night served up the question on the silver platter and some hit the ball, some of them chose not to. but the goal really from here on out is every single time you have the opportunity to go after donald trump, you do so. and there are many opportunities to do so. nikki haley has continued to hit him on how he contributed to the debt. desantis hits him on how donald trump is a loser and desantis has won. many can hit him on the fact that he never built the wall mexico was going to pay for. issue after issue. and most specifically, donald trump is spending his time in a court room and not on the campaign trail and how is he going to help the american people when he is fighting for his own freedom and not for the american people. chris christie is the only one thatcontinuously goes after donald trump. 76ers hold on to win by three. and victor wembanyama made his madison square garden debut. he said before the game msg was smaller than he expected. well, knicks fans don't want to hear anything negative about their home. they chanted overrated during parts of the game. wasn't a stellar first game for wemby. he didn't make a shot until the third quarter. knicks got the win 126-105. and also the uconn superstar playing her first sxwgame in 58 games after a torn acl. she scored eight points in the win over dayton. and becker actually called it a bad game for her but added that she's just grateful to have a fwad bad game after so long. >> yeah, takes a lot of grit to come back from an injury like that. and i have to say, i'm not as read in on the nba as i am on many of the other sports you cover. so i appreciate you carrying us through this particular point in the sports season. >> not a problem. >> and i lov
