we need to continue the lead. secretary austin and i believe it is important to be here together, because of what so much we do to ensure our national security is that defense and diplomacy must work hand in hand. >> committee will suspend and again, i appreciate that people feel passionately about these issue, and i would ask that you respect our witnesses and the committee members and allow the american people to hear their testimony, and we will pause until the vroom is cleared. >> 3,500 kids dead. i'm an army colonel and former diplomat and resided in that war in iraq that you talk about and it is a ter rinlrible thing, ant we are doing to support the war in israel against gaza is a terrible thing, too. you may continue. >> and the president's funding proposal has four key elements. it supports israel and ukraine, two democracies under brutal assault with two people determined to wipe them off of the map. and it will build up security and intelligence support that the united states has surged since the appalling slaughter. and i know that several -- >> committee will suspend and i again ask that those in the audience respect the people in the room, and allow us to continue to hearing. the hearing is going to suspend until the disruption is removed. >> cease-fire now. cease-fire now. people are not animals. >> thank you, secretary blinken, if you can continue, please. >> i know that several committee members have traveled to israel over the last several weeks, and they have heard from israeli officials of what they need to defend their people and to prevent another attack like this, and that is what the supplemental provides for 7.3 billion with the security needs to include israel to bolster their needs. and additional authority to draw down the dod stocks and enhance the security of the embassy. president biden has made clear from the outset that while israel has the right and indeed the obligation to defend itself in the way it does so matters. in discussions of the israeli government, the need to have israel to operate -- >> the committee will suspend. >> why aren't they at the table? cease-fire now. i beg you. cease-fire now. >> secretary blin ken, you may continue. >> thank you. and i said with the need to operate with the international law and to take all measures necessary to avoid all casualties. and per ukraine, the president is asking for $6.3 billion without which russia will move quickly to exploit any possible opening and to ensure that ukraine can sustain the economic base and that war effort depends on and this is not only going to rebuild ukraine, but help in ways they cannot imagine in infrastructure and supply chains from europe to the rest of the world, and resilient clean energy, and civil society and media and strong enough to deter and defend against the aggressors, ukraine will need a resilient democracy within the borders. since the war, the robust support of congress has enabled people of ukraine in the courageous fight to defend their nation, and it has helped the invasion and strategic -- >> the committee will suspend. >> from palestine to mexico -- they have to go. [ shouting ] >> cease-fire now! cease-fire now! you are funding genocide! you are funding genocide! cease-fire now! cease-fire now. from palestine to mexico all walls have to go. from palestine to mexico all of the walls have to go. from palestine mexico all of the walls have to go. from palestine to mexico all of the walls have to go. cease-fire now. cease-fire. cease-fire now. >> cease-fire now. >> cease-fire now. >> cease-fire now. >> cease-fire now. >> cease-fire now. cease-fire now. cease-fire now. cease-fire now. >> thank you. before i turn back over to you, secretary blinken, i want to thank the capitol police for calm and professional manner, and we all appreciate it. and if you could continue, secretary blinken. >> and so when russia launched this war, the robust funding of congress provided to people of ukraine in the right to defend their nation, it has helped that the russia invasion has been a debacle to make the invasion weaker. and the integrity and independence for the people. and congress has helped to share the burden, and turning our backs on their efforts would have lasting implications for our own security and standing in the world. the conflicts in ukraine and the middle east would have lasting effects. since we have cut off supplies, they have turned to iran. and they have supplied more advanced technology which has increased more embolden ed military weapons. this is going to increase terrorism in ukraine, sudan and armenia and other places around the world. food, water and medicine which is needed for humanitarian assistance must flow into gaza, and the civilians must stay out of harm's way which is a task which is made more difficult as hamas is using them as human shields and humanitarian paudzs must be considered, and barring a humanitarian catastrophe is aligning with the deeply held principles and that every human life is equally equal and without swift humanitarian relief, the conflict is much more likely to spread, suffering is going to grow, and hamas and the sponsors will benefit by fashioning themselves as the saviors of the desperation that they created. the humanitarian assistance is vital to israel's security and immediate aid for providing the aid is important for the founding partners of gaza who have a different vision than hamas and are willing to make it real. third, this funding is critical to outcompeting rivals. this is also going to bolster deterrence, and support the partners in the indo pacific to address threats from the nrc and other challenges and uphold the commitment to the allies including trilateral partner of australia and united kingdom caucus -- you are listening to antony blinken testify before the appropriations committee to ask for more money to support israel and ukraine as they are both engaged in wars at this time. this is a tumultuous hearing and you heard many of the dem demonstrators there calling for cease-fire, and something that the prime minister of israel benjamin netanyahu saying that it is a victory for hamas to stop the operations there, and we should say that the idf forces have said they have changed the number of hostages now to 240 hostages being held in gaza, and they have been in captivity now for 25 days. to give you a sense of the latest on this operation, this is the newest video that we have of the israeli ground effort in northern gaza, and you can see the explosions there, and also the israeli troops on the ground inside of gaza, and the operations are not take place just in gaza though. we got this video in just this morning from north of ramallah from the israeli occupied west bank, and them targeting the hamas leader who lives in that area. you can see the home is simply destroyed there. now n terms of what else is happening right now, there has continued to be tension on the israel/lebanon border. right along here. hezbollah, the shia militia groups who has strong support from iran operates in southern lebanon and the exchanges of fire and hostilities for weeks now between hezbollah and israel here, and we go right to the border to get a sense of where things are standing right now. our jim sciutto is on the israeli side. jim, what do you see? >> john, it is interesting that in the last hour, the idf confirmed another israeli strike inside of lebanon going after what they call the hezbollah infrastructure and we have seen it once a day and multiple times a day as they received fire from the lebanese side, and hezbollah and other fighters have targeted the order of the fire with air strikes and artillery, and as we are speaking together, we can hear the artillery fire off to the left, and you will have this going on back and forth throughout the day, and wherever we go along the border here in the north, and not to the degree where an entire new front is opening up, but where you can say that iran proxies in lebanon and syria are showing the power and presence and showing that they can strike israeli territory, and seeing the forces like the ones that i am here, and this is an israeli unit, and the merka tanks here are stationed for -- well, they don't know whether it is defensive operations, and they have certainly not been given the orders and they certainly would not share them with us, because it is a level of alert here right now. and one other point they thought i would highlight here, john, because you were in ukraine, too, about a year and a half ago, when i am speaking to the israeli troop, it is reminding me what i heard from the ukrainian forces is that their country was invaded and by attackers who attacked civilians, and god knows we saw that on october 7th from hamas, and they believe they are defending themselves, and like ukraine, they were called up, and members of the citizens who had jobs or in school or in college and overseas called up to defend the country. that is how they see the war right now. so when you are hearing the words from up on the hill connecting two conflicts russia's invasion of ukraine and hamas's invasion of israeli, the soldiers there and here see it similarly. >> and jim, while i have you here, we see you near the israeli/lebanon border, and we can see the tanks there, and those are the tanks on the north of the country which means they are not deployed down there on the south near gaza, and the troops that you are talking to, do they give you a sense that the israeli forces are stretched more thinly than they can handle? >> hmm. well, they need to be here, right. just as israel has surged forces south for this ongoing ground operation in gaza, they surginged the forcesurging ed -- surged the forces north as well to prevent another front opening upper hoo, and the seriousness with what they are taking the threat, and it is not just forces here, and by the way, the reason that this shot is tight, is because they do not want to reveal for security reasons where they are exactly on the map, but set not just the forces moving up, but it is the civilians moving south. to you, john, when i go to the communities that have essentially emptied out and some under mandatory evacuation orders and some voluntarily, it is hard to know what changes will have to be required for those families to move back, because the artillery fire is constant and the rocket fire is constant and the threat of ground incursion is constant. it is hard to know when the comfort level returns in the north much like we are seeing in the south. >> yes, i have heard you asking those questions in the village and a poignant question, jim, when will you feel safe coming back and not getting an answer. jim sciutto in northern border of israel near lebanon, and thank you for being there. >> it is great to have jim there for the perspective. and coming up, the number of hostages held by hamas is going up again. families are praying for the loved ones as the idf is pushing further into gaza. and so many more families are learning more details of the horrible day that their loved ones were killed by hamas. the american israeli young man who was killed at the music festival's family member will be joining us. and also, what is going to happening when the former president's family member takes the stand tomorrow. we will be right back. now, the idf says this morning that the number of hostages being held in gaza by hamas is increasing once again. now, 240 people being kidnapped from israel by hamas terrorists and being held in gaza today. we are also at the very same time learning about at the innocent civilians being killed in that horrific hamas attack including at the music festival. including this man. his family says he died a hero protecting people he loved with him. he was at the festival with his girlfriend and other close friends, and when they heard the rocket sirens, they ran. they drove to a nearby bomb shelter. then adir and one of his friends in realizing that the hamas terrorists were attacking those who were sheltering, they told the others to hide and stay behind and went out unarmed to charge the gunmen. they were killed. some of their friends survived and rescued hours later by israeli forces. and joining me now is adir's aunt, and thank you so much for joining us. >> thank you for having me. >> you went over there as quickly as you could to be there for the family and the funeral and the funeral of others, and you have returned. from what you know of what adir did for his friends and what you have heard from his friends who have survived, what sticks with you most? >> first of all, thank you for having me, and what sticks with me most is that his bravery and his life of his love of those who he loved most, his friends, a his family, and his girlfriend never left him. not for a moment while he was alive and not in a moment that led to his death. >> what has been taken from the world with adir now gone. what do you hold on the? >> what has been taken from the world is a beautiful human being who believed very much in peace and in love and in life and in nature. he was a lover of the ocean and of surfing and of sunsets. he designed a beautiful jewelry line that was in the name of that love for nature. he wanted to dedicate his life to causes like climate and sustainability. he was thinking of becoming an engineer. we lost one of the kindest, most loving human beings not only in our immediate family, but in our community, and i think that we also lost for at least for now, some belief in the fact that good will prevail against evil. >> i actually heard you say that you think that adir would want to make sure that the day after was planned for, the day after this war was planned for, that children are taken care of, that the focus is not just on retaliation. >> yeah. yeah. >> where is your heart and head in terms of so much pain, so much suffering. i mean, the israeli government is talking about trying to work to put together a safe zone in gaza. >> yes. >> and so it is -- where is your head and heart on this? >> look, i think that the grief right now is challenging because while we are and many other families are trying to grieve the loss of their loved ones of their sons, of their brothers, of their daughters, of their mothers, of their babies that they cannot even identify yet, that they can't even bury yet, we are also grieving and having to defend for who we are, for being jewish, for being part of those who believe in life and in freedom, for having to figure out how to collect pieces that are shattered while paying attention to the fact that our energy, our collective community will be needed to rebuild not just israel, but i think that many parts of humanity that are now broken. and so, my head and my heart are very much divided, but focused on both grieving and rebuilding just like i mentioned that i think that adir would have wanted. >> as you were sitting is backstage, you also heard the secretary of state in the testimony being interrupted by protesters and anti-israel protesters, and you are saying that you heard, and i heard you say that there is so much pain. so when you see that, when you see the images coming out of gaza, how do you process, how do you feel? how do you react when you see the protests? >> i think that we have been for many, many years taught that every story has at least three sides, and that things are gray, and that not everything is black and white. and while i hear the pain, i also think that we are in a black and white moment. we are in a moment of positioning ourselves on right versus wrong, and i think that i am hearing echoing of stories that have been told without facts being checked. i think that we are hearing a lot of rallying around a cause without understanding the depth and the history and the facts, and we are looking for leadership to set things straight and to tell us what the truth is, but we also need people to want to find out what the truth is, and we need the media to be committed to covering what the truth is. >> and you also see the ugly, ugly horrific head of anti-semitism rear its ugly head up in a terrifying way. and you are living in the new york area in cornell, and now the fbi is now helping to protect jewish students and organizations. >> it is unbelievable it is happening right now, and it is enraging that we have to be dealing with this keend of violence against jews all around the world and here at home. >> what would -- what would be adir's message? and i know that i am asking the impossible. >> look, i wear a bracelet that my husband made for me with the day he died and the geocoordinates that he died and he is with me and i try to hear him. i think that as much as adir would want to be rebuilding, he would first want to be protecting those that he loves including his brother who is a soldier in the idf and other soldiers. he would want to make sure that his friends and family were protected both in israel and around the world. once we accomplish that, we will focus on rebuilding. >> thank you for coming in. >> thank you for having me. >> thank you for your strength. john. so donald trump's children begin testifying in the civil fraud case against him as soon as tomorrow, and what the words mean for them, their father and the case. >> and so a huge moment in a new york courtroom. donald trump's children are scheduled tomorrow to begin testifying in a civil fraud against him where he has been found liable for fraud. donald trump jr. kicks it off followed by eric trump and ivanka trump next week. brynn gingras is with us, and where is this going to be going? >> well, it is pivotal to the civil trial, and the attorney general's team have been putting the witnesses on the stand, and eric trump and donald trump jr., and not ivanka trump, but their names have been mentioned by the witnesses by emails or phone calls and these guys could tie it together, and whether or not they answer the question from attorney general's lawyers, we'll see, but they can tie together the pieces of who exactly was in charge of evaluating the assets for the trump org and how they got to the civil trial in the first place and the argument that they were inflated. >> and ivanka trump is in a little different of a category? >> well, she is no longer a defendant, but the appeals court ruled in her favor to take her off as a defendant, because she left trump oregon when he went into office, and so she had no part of the discussions that were had about evaluating the properties, and so she is no longer a defendant, but the state basically said, listen, she still benefits from trump oregon and get -- from trump or and so she could testify after her father. >> so donald trump, himself, as soon as monday? >> yes, and the schedule could shift, and the two sons could be on the stand for quite a bit, but he is expected to be on the stand and be the final witness for the state before we head to the defense. he is not going to be in the courtroom for the children. >> he is not? >> no, he was there for michael cohen and the start of the trial, but he has some campaign things going on and so apparently not in the courtroom, but that could change, but as for now, he is not going to be listening to the kids' testimony, but it is going to be a big moment. >> and a few weeks to be listening here. brynn gingras, you will be down there inside of the courtroom for us. >> yes. >> thank you. the growing peril of the mass shooter in maine and they were so worried about the shooter and they went to the police about what he might do. we will dig deeper into the warning signs. so, troubling new revelations about the shooter in maine who killed 18 peoplement documents released by the sheriff's office detail how as far back as may, the shooter's ex-wife and son went to the police to report concerns over what they concerned as paranoid behavior. they also said that he had taken between 10 and 15 guns and rifles from his brother's house. at a press conference, shimon prokupiez asked the maine governor about the missed signs. >> we know that there is an alarming concern from the law enforcement community that activity and information here was ignored. and the simple answer is why was that done and are you concerned about that? >> i think that those kinds of fact are yet to be determined. and you are making assumptions that i am not willing to make assumptions. >> so, leroy walker whose son was killed in the attack, he expressed frustration at the missed signs. >> i think that we have seen enough facts to know that they totally missed what this man was capable of doing, and they should have removed this man's guns immediately. this man went rampant on people saying that he was going to do this, and we still let him run around two or three months later. >> all right. with me now is cnn chief law enforcement analyst john miller, and first, acknowledge that the governor janet mills did not answer shimon prokupiez' question. >> and that is right. and they do this when it is live and they show up and say, i am in charge, and i'm responsible, and we are all together, and every resource is being devoted to this, and when the questions are harder, they fade into the background and don't have answers. what is required of the governor at some point is to battle off these questions for some time or to appoint somebody in a move of transparency, the inspector general to look at this top to bottom, and write a report. >> top to bottom, and it is glaring, john. we talk about the warning signs, and i can't recall a time when things were less subtle than this. >> if you are looking at the chronology, you will learn a lot, because yo have u have the family coming forward in september, and the family coming forward in may, and the firearms purchases in july. you have essentially a mental breakdown ten days later in july where the army reserve is involved. then you have a concern that is no new york state, and then you have to army concern in saco, maine, becoming involved saying that he is making statements that he wants to shoot up the base and had a fight with the friend. and you can see the continuum, and what we know in the active shooter realm, and it is documented and studied in 85 to 90% of the cases there are leakage, and people are giving signs, and he is leaking like crazy in terms of the signs and it is not subtle, and the alarm signs of the stressors is of the mental episodes with the army reserve, and the losing of the job from the recycling center and the issue that he had with the breakup of his wife. all of this is building. look, they have the yellow flag law in the state, and it is not a yellow flag law, but they have used it 82 times since 2020 where the circumstances are similar or even less so by the narratives and they have the figure out what went wrong here. >> and oftentimes what is said here is a plea to the public, you need to be on the watch. you have to be coming forward to say something. >> yes. >> they did. the family members did, and the co-workers did in this case. >> in going over it, what i see is the army steps forward, and i they kind of cleared the bar as they did their role in terms of the notification, the army reserve. i see that the sheriff comes forward where he lives and an investigator and sargent go out to start to talk to people, and looking for him, but they don't find him. the police department, a local police department increases patrol, and the problem you see is that no one entity is taking complete charge of this, and saying that we have to own this start to finish, and there are three to four entities involved and the second problem is they don't go to the file 6 as they call nit mai it in maine that e enforcement is looking for that man and license plate to do a stop and have an intervention. so there were things that were missed. >> certainly were. john miller, thank you. we know that you will stay on this. >> certainly were. and coming up, the israeli-hamas war has sparked anti-semitism across the world and including in the united states, and sparking questions of what is going on and what can be done about itt? we will dig into it. new this morning, israel's military is confirming that they have located and identified the remains of the 23-year-old woman who has been missing since the hamas terror attack. shani was at the nova music festival with hundreds of others when the hamas terrorists attacked and killing others and kidnapping others and she was shown in a disgusting propaganda video where she was seen unconscious, and then held in the back of the truck by hamas terrorists and paraded around. her mother has spoken to cnn for several times pleading for her daughter, and she spoke to cnn after getting this final tragic news that her daughter was killed. listen. >> after three weeks that you have no idea where your daughter is, what they are doing to her, what is happening, what is, you don't know whether she is alive or injured or what, and you are like in a vacuum for three weeks just hoping to get some signs or life signs, and then suddenly, you get the worst news, but in one hand, it is really okay now, it is final, and now we can stop looking for her, which is some finality to go on. >> now, shani louk was just 20 years old going to the music fet festival, and now she has passed and she has been killed. and now, we go to jim sciutto on the border of israel and lebanon. what is happening there? >> well, you might have heard that boom. as you are traveling along the border here as we have been doing for several days, you will encounter this with regularity, the smoke rising, and flames, and we have heard two booms within seconds, and the top of the ridgeline is the lebanon border there, and we believe that the explosion on the opposite side, and not clear whether it is outcoming artillery fire, and we do know that there was a short time ago an extraining this way in a town that we visited the other day, the zigzag pattern there marks the border of israel and lebanon, and it is this kind of the regular exchange of the rocket fire and artillery that we have been seeing with reg lairty, and something is under way, because again, we are hearing booms in the last couple of minutes, and that is the low grade conflict here, hezbollah firing in and attempting to cross that border fence and that border wall, and israel of course firing back. >> and jim, you were at a staging area earlier in the show where we saw the idf tanks staging if need be, and what are you hearing from the idf of what they are preparing for, and what they are encountering as the things seem to be at real risk of heating up in a big way on the north earn border with lebanon which could be a significant change in the conflict. >> yeah, we were just at the staging area about half a mile down the road, and we saw the smoke to come to investigate what is going on, and tens of thousands of idf forces, and including armored divisions like that one down, there and raid along the northern border in case, right, as a defensive line in case hezbollah were to attempt to come in, in numbers, and the forced deployment since october 7th, and the mass majority is reservists called up, and think about that, one-third of a million people called up in this country to do their duty to defend the country, and many tens of thousands of them the south of that country, with a majority of them coming south. they say that they are here to defend their threat and not just hezbollah from the north, but the south, and you can see the flaming rising, and they feel they have that duty. >> jim thank you for that reporting, and clearly things are heating up today. we will right back. protests on capitol hill. secretary of state tony blinken interrupted multiple times as he was trying to testify before the senate. he and the defense secretary are taking questions from the law mai money for israel and ukraine. and what is hamas wanting for the hostages in the rescue mission? and at least two of donald trump's children could take the stand this week called by prosecutors in the father's fraud trial. sara sidner is on assignment, and i'm kate bolduan in new york with john berman.
