We begin in maine or police are in the second night of hunting for the suspect in two backtoback shootings that killed 18 people and wounded more than a dozen others. Law enforcement descended on the suspects last known, addressed just a few hours, go authorities were later heard shouting you are under, arrest had come out with your hands up. Though it appears, at the suspect was not there at the time. Police are searching officials are staying vigilant, remaining, inside and lock their doors as this war as they plan to investigate in the coming hours. Now schools and Government Properties will again be closed on friday, while the suspect is still on the loose. Hundreds of local, state, and federal agents are involved in the, search and that investigation into wednesdays massacre. This is the deadliest Mass Shooting in the states this year, it took place that two locations wednesday evening. First a Bowling Alley, and an eighth restaurant. Cnns brian todd breaks down how the shootings and subsequent unfolded. This should be considered armed and dangerous, an intense man hunt underway in maine for the shooter who went on a rampage wednesday night, killing 18, people and injuring 13 others at two different locations. Hundreds of Law Enforcement personnel, might land, air, and even at sea, looking for the suspect. 40yearold robert card, an Army Reservist who spent two weeks in Mental Health facility in the best summer, and are still at large. We believe this is something we should not be approached, and possibly 56 pm, the Communication Center received a 911 call of a shooting and just in time where the spare time recreation center. Shortly after that, at about 708 pm, the Communication Center received multiple 911 calls about an active shooter, in front of a map schemengees billiards. I, pm Police Released a photo of the, shooter and by call identifying the suspect. Just before ten, pm police say they located his car. Now an entire community is in fear, being asked to shelter in place. Businesses are shut, down on schools ordered closed through friday. Witnesses left in shock. She was grazed by a bullet. We were running. I never thought i would grow up and get a bullet in my leg, it is just like, why . Why do people do this . I saw the weapon, i booked it down the, line and i slipped basically where the fans are. Others mourn the loss of family in another anything that happens like this, you go empty. It is just nothing. There is nothing you can do. Many are asking, were Warning Signs missed . According to a National Guard spokesperson, the shooter was supported up behaving erratically at an Army Training facility this past july. Authorities say he made statements about hearing voices, and wanting to shoot up a National Guard base. He was then transported to an Army Hospital for medical evaluation. Im sure there will be a lot of review and analysis, was there something . Missed was he deemed a danger to himself or someone else . A Law Enforcement source tells cnn, investigators found a gun in a car connected to the suspected but it is unclear whether that gun was used in the shootings. Meanwhile, a former colleague of card was a u. S. Army reserves with, him told cnn, he is a skilled outdoorsman, and marksman, and was one of the best shooters in their unit. Brian todd, cnn, maine. It is more than 24 hours, now and i cant imagine how tense it is for residents in maine at this hour. What does it tell you about how far this suspect could have gotten . And could he possibly have used a boat . Is he possibly at the thank you for having me. I think there is a tremendous amount of possibility, that is what investigators in the command team is working on right now. It is to try and get into his mind, utilizing whether he was on social media, or other methods, getting and preparing his plan. He has a multitude of options that were at his disposal, where he left his vehicle. He could have gotten into a second vehicle, and he could be as far away us florida at this time. He could have gotten into a, boat or he could have gone on foot into the woods. I think the boat option, going out in the atlantic another coast guard is patrolling, i think that is the least likely of the option because of his smaller craft needs fuel, and he would have known this and attract the attention if anybody obtaining fuel. So i think the most likely option based on what we are learning about the subject is that he is very adept to the rural area, the, woods and he is very knowledgeable about these wooded areas. So i think either him going out on foot at the boat dock area, or taking the boat down river to other locations where he had supplies set up, the 1998 was a fiveyear manhunt after put on the ten most wanted, the bombing, and then other medical facilities, and he was on the run for five years because of the same situation. He was familiar with the, woods he had setups, and he was able to stay hidden from Law Enforcement for over five years. So i think that is one of the most likely scenario is that he either went from foot, from that parking area, or he put his craft down river. Not long enforcement is trying to get these leads together, and once they establish a good lead then they will start focusing the search teams on the area. Lets get to the issues of leads in a moment. You make the point that if the attack was planned out, it was likely that escape may have been planned as well. One goes with the other. He knew where he was going, two locations which are four miles apart. He knew that he had to travel ten miles to the botox. So everything seemed to be well thought out others. Focus on his Mental Health issues, but it doesnt take away from the possibility that he had planned this out. He was prepared for this. He knew how to make entry to conduct a Suiting Operation that is very likely on the run and theyre in that wooded area there because hes familiar with him they were in south carolina, florida, where he is an unknown territory Law Enforcement and the fbi, each side, all of these agencies, well look at every Single League and are going to look at their divisions all the way up to the 56 different fbi divisions across the country. Everybody is prepared for leads that may be coming out of the incident command center, which is set up there in maine, and if those leads are going to russia out, we are doesnt matter what our it is. I know fbi boston, i know a lot of agents that are there, they are very much working, quite diligently, along with tactical operation specialists, and we understand, this is a clear, and present danger, for the people of maine right now. This is why there is no holds barred, all of Enforcement Agencies are doing your best to figure out where he has gone. That is the issue. You have Tens Of Thousands of people, right now, shelter in place. This goes to what i was saying earlier about any clues, or tips, that they may have. I appreciate that there are many smart people working on this right now. The fact that they went back to his last known address, now, twice, what does that tell you about concrete clues they have . Real tips about what he might be doing, and where he might be . The fact, is the difference between a concrete clue, and the possibility, or leap, every clue, every tip, is washed out. Every phone call that is provided his, call to 911, they will look at every single one. There wont be one that is overlooked. The fact of why they went back to the house a second time . Then i cannot give you a reason why. Maybe someone saw something, maybe someone heard something, maybe a dog was barking, there are any numbers of reasons why, why the Tactical Team will conduct that second entry. So now, what fbi s. W. A. T. , what we will do now, what fbi s. W. A. T. Does now, is a much more methodical wintry. Instead of, what it used to be, a dynamic entry. Swat comes rushing into the house. Lately, our new protocol in the fbis, control. Approach the house, surround the house, let everyone in the house know, the fbi is here, your best option is to come out. When those statements were on the bull form of come out with your hands up, come out to the truck, those are protocol statements. It does not mean that there was, actually, anyone seen in their. The fbi just makes those statements because it is the protocol, and is the way that fbi s. W. A. T. Will make a surrounding, to prepare for a search warrant. Then, they make the next, sending a drone, or a canine, if that is available. There are steps to slowly approach. We are learning more about some of the people who lost their lives in the rampage in maine. These are just a few of the victims who have been identified so far. Arthur straut, a father of five children, was killed at the restaurant on wednesday night that, where he had been playing pool. His family had been told, he was at a hospital at first, and then on thursday, had learned the awful truth. Joseph walker was a manager of the restaurant. His father, who you saw earlier, said that joseph was killed when he tried to stop the shooter from killing others. Ryan mcfarlane, part of the local deaf community, and usually, went to the restaurant to play corn hole on wednesdays. His sister tells cnn, the 40yearold was there to take part in a tournament when the shooting happened. And, 34yearold tommy conrad, killed at the Bowling Alley where he was the manager. He leaves behind a nine year old daughter. Now, another victim, who was killed at the Bowling Alley, was a woman who had worked their parttime. 53 year old trisha was there on her night off with her sister, and was able to run for her life when the shooting started. We heard a loud noise, and i wasnt sure what it was, until i heard another shot. Then i knew that. I saw that i couldnt see her. And everybody was running. And i got caught, and people were trampling, and running out, and we just kept running. There were shots fired outside of the building after, and we just kept running, and running, and running. It was dark. There is very little lighting. I just ran them as far as i could go, until there was a fence, and there were some trees, and a bunch of us were just hiding behind the trees. Wondering what was going on when the cops showed up, there were all kinds of cops, tons and tons of cops, and guns that, and rescue. We were Coming Out Of The Woods and we were telling the cops, dont shoot, and they were telling us to keep walking, and walking, and walking. I kept asking them, wheres my sister . Where is my sister . Shes in there that. And i just wanted to be with my sister, and she wasnt there. And i didnt know that she was hurt until two hours later. Somebody had come out and said, she had called 911. When she had called 911, it saved everybody. She lost her life because of it. She was a great person. A great person. She also called her sister trisha. Still ahead, the idf announces the next phase of its war with hamas ahead of the anticipated Ground Invasion of gaza. Those details, when we r return. We want to bring you up to date on israels war against hamas. Now, nearly three weeks old, israel announced the next phase of its Military Operations on thursday, saying all will conductlimited raids into gaza in preparation for its Ground Offensive. Video from the israeli military, showing a column of idf tanks, and heavy equipment, during one targeted raid on thursday. The idf says, the operation was large, but limited, and the troops withdrew from gaza. Israel has vowed to destroy hamas after the group massacred more than 1400 people in southern israel with more than 200 others taken hostage. The idf said a strike on thursday killed a senior hamas leader who was involved, they say, in planning the october 7th attacks. In the meantime, eu leaders are appealing for safe corridors to deliver aid to gaza where basic necessities are in short supply. Red crescent says, another 12 aid trucks entered gaza thursday, but did not bring any fuel. Israel has refused to allow it in. Israel says hamas has stolen, and will steal fuel to use in its rocket attacks. We go to cnns jim bittermann, whos live for us in paris. It has nearly been three weeks now, jim. I think people are still wondering whether or not the Israeli Government is on the brink of a full scale Ground Invasion . In fact, i think you hear, there is a lot of wonder about that. The impression is that the steak of whats going on. With 35 citizens killed in the attacks on october 7th. There are nine still missing, or presumed to be among those hostages. So, yes, i think the french are concerned with whats going on. We heard president macron make a quick trip to the middle east, meeting with key leaders on both israel, egypt, and jordan and in palestinian territories. He was, basically, pitching a plan for, a, a ceasefire, but be, some kind of anti terror coalition. He used it as the nature of the ice this coalition those put together involving europeans, and some arab countries the. His ideas, however, the were not met with a lot of approval by the various leaders. In fact, it didnt seem to get much traction, in terms of getting this coalition together. So, we will see how this develops in the coming days, but there are very interested in being involved. They have sent a navy ship the, which, really, is a helicopter carrier, and described as a hospital ship, but its not really. It does have hospital beds on it, 50 or 60, but it is more of a helicopter carrier. Also, providing the french with in a post. It has some pretty sophisticated Communications Equipment on it. At this point, many are wondering if this kind of involvement with france will, actually, lead to more aid to getting into gaza. Jim bittermann, for us, we have to leave it there, but thank you. These rallies continue to promise more, what they are calling, targeted raids into the day ahead. What do they hope to accomplish in advance of this kind of offensive . Paula, good to be with you. The big thing they are trying to do is find out where hamas fighters, actually, our. With targeted raids, theyre somewhat similar, in concept, to reconnaissance in force. Theyre going forward, theyre taking a look at what is out there. They, with targeted raids, also know a bit more from an intelligence perspective. Theyre going in, and trying to find leadership elements, perhaps tunnel entrances, other aspects of the hamas infrastructure that they could, perhaps, take advantage of. Of, course theyre looking for any weak points out there. That is what they are doing. Of course, as they move forward with those tanks, that becomes a critical element for the israelis. What they are trying to do is find good ways to move their forces, their armor, especially, into position, so that they can actually use it for maximum effectiveness. It makes a good point, they do want that armored that Armed Personnel Carriers and, theyre the tanks and their, and they need to find a way to go. I want to ask you, do you think that there is a possibility that the Israeli Government is reconsidering its strategy at this hour . That, perhaps, a full Ground Invasion may not, in fact, yield the results they want . Yes. I think they are reconsidering it. There are a lot of Warning Signs out here, paula. When you are seeing the kinds of things that could happen with this maximum type of urban combat, that really awaits the Israeli Defense forces when they entered Populated Areas of gaza, it could be a problem. It could really pull them into a quagmire. That is the kind of thing that israel should, really, avoid at all costs. They need to play to their own strengths, as two opposed to hamass strengths. If they went in, and did a full force on force type invasion, that would, really, play to hamass strengths, because they would be on the defensive, they would know what to expect from the israelis, if the israelis, on the other hand, go to a targeted, timed, Special Forces like incursion, then it would be much different, and, perhaps, prosecute more high value targets the, more important people. That would be the kind of thing that they could, i think, profit from on the israeli side. It was interesting, speaking to what you are saying, that the idf has been careful in the last 24 hours to make it clear to cnn, look, this is not a Ground Invasion. That in fact, these were targeted raids. Theyre being careful, themselves, in terms of explaining what theyre doing, saying, these are not Special Forces on the ground, yet. More to the point, when we talk about how complicated it is on the ground, the hostile situation of course continues to constrain every military move they make. Do you think that u. S.
