Shelter in place. Its now been more than 12 hours since the two Mass Shoot Gs happened in lewiston, maine. Police are looking for this man, robert card. Hes 40 years old and police are calling him a Person Of Interest right now. Theyve released several images of him, including surveillance photos which were showing right now from the Bowling Alley where the first shooting took place. Card is a certified Firearms Instructor and a member of the u. S. Army reserves. Police say hes armed and dangerous. We will be getting an update from police this morning. This unfolded last night at a Bowling Alley and a restaurant in lewiston, maine. Law enforcement sources tell us at cnn that 16 people were killed and 60 others were hurt. We just received video from outside the Bowling Alley when Police Arrived on scene. Take a look. Folks, this way. I suggest for your safety you go. Whats that . I suggest you go. I didnt hear you. What . I suggest you go. We have an active shooter and were not sure where hes at at this moment. Keep yourself safe. And then the terrifying wait for families. Heres one father speaking to a local reporter saying he knows his son, what is the manager of the restaurant, is dead. When i wake up to the true facts that my son is dead and i know hes dead. I know it as well as i know im standing here telling you, because hes not here and hes not on the any other hospital and hes not running the streets or he would have called us because he manages the restaurant. So i know he was there. He knows. This is just so sad. And there is so many people, including kids, who were out last night and caught up in all of this. I want to play for you now, listen to this. This is a mother and her daughter who were at the Bowling Alley. When i turned around, i saw the shooter right like behind me, had just come in the door. I dont know if that was just a warning shot or if he actually shot somebody with that one. But we between the lanes theres some Swinging Doors like where they keep all the mechanical stuff out back. So we kind of all just ran that way. It was like shocking. Like its something youd think would never happen. I never thought id grow up and get a bullet in my leg. Why . Like why do people do this . I was more worried about like am i going to live . Am i going to make it out of here . Like whats going to happen . Are the cops going to come . The questions that a child is having to wonder. The Bowling Alley and restaurant are about 4 miles apart. After the shootings happened, as police were responding, a vehicle connected to robert card was found in lisbon, maine, the town next door basically. Lets start with omar hi jimene. What are you learning at this hour . Reporter right now investigators are continuing to look through the shooting scene. We have a little bit of an elevated view. Weve been watching this throughout the day as weve seen crews and investigators come in had and out. Obviously still an active scene here amidst a very active manhunt we know has been going on throughout the area. Now this particular bar and Grill Shooting Scene is a few miles from the Bowling Alley you were talking about. Police have named robert card, 40 years old, as a Person Of Interest in this particular case. And its a person that they believe is armed and dangerous. Its why we have seen shelter in many place warnings throughout this area out of an abundance of caution. Why weve seen schools closed at High School Level and below and also universities closed. One to make sure that people are safe and another to make sure police can do their jobs effectively. Its obviously caused a lot of concern for Law Enforcement trying to figure out where this person is. When we checked into the Hotel Overnight we werent allowed in until we showed our ids through the glass door because the clerk wasnt sure who was showing up at 1 30 in the morning when we were getting there. When we talked to him, he said it was a sense of fear they were having, a sense of nervousness over what could happen next. We know these were mass casualty events, many were killed, wounded, many survived, which is good news. But for those that arent getting good news are waiting for hopefully good news from the hospitals that have had to deal with a last minute surge, a surge theyre not used to seeing in this area. Were 30 miles north of portland, the second most populous town, but not that big, around 35,000 or so. Were expecting an update from police in about an hour and a half or so where hopefully the Community Gets answers. But the one theyre looking for is when this person will get caught and why this manhunt has been so active and why theyre using every resource they can at the local, state and federal level to try to hone in on where this person might be. It might be a likely challenging manhunt in terms of who this person is with his training and background. Omar jimenez thank you. Right now hundreds of Law Enforcement are searching for the Person Of Interest across maine in the a Mass Shooting. I want to bring in Shimon Prokupecz who joins us live from lisbon, maine. You were able to talk to the police chief who said that all night his department was receiving calls. What did he tell you, and what are you hearing about the latest in the Search Efforts . Reporter right. Look, people here are definitely on edge. This is lisbon, this is where the manhunt has been going on all night. This is where the Person Of Interest dumped that car that police recovered a short time after the horrific shooting. So now people here are on edge all night long, people have been calling 911, the police have been responding to those calls, people say theyre hearing people in their yards, the doors are open and so police are coming in and doing those searches. This is the street just up the block here, i want to show you, where the Person Of Interest dumped his car. So police this morning closed this off and now youre seeing heavily armed officers here and other intersections across lisbon. Were not seeing this major, mass i have manhunt but there are groups of officers like this across the area. At this point it seems theyre responding to calls from residents. We spoke to one of those residents this morning who said hes on edge. Take a listen to what he said. My wife, she normally gets up for work, she came and grabbed me and was like, hey, theres an active shooter and hes parked down where you go fishing at. Nerves are rattled right now, keeping an eye on the woods. Because i know those woods down there, they run right back here. And i got my daughter inside. Its very unnerving right now. Reporter so a lot of work here by Law Enforcement thats ongoing behind the scenes from all the various Law Enforcement agencies who are going to be flooding maine, really, to try and find this person. So thats why a lot of the activity that is ongoing, e were not really seeing it. But for people who are living here, its a really, really scary time. Schools are closed. Most people are not going to work. Youre not really seeing people out and about. Law enforcement is telling people stay inside. If you see anything suspicious, call us. Theyre taking that seriously, the residents are, and hoping, hoping this will end here quickly. Absolutely. You can certainly understand as that neighbor told you why nerves are rattled. Suspicious people, Gun Shots All Night Long since the incident in lewiston, we have our whole department working. I encourage everybody to call if they see something suspicious. Something small could be something thats a piece of information we may need. So i cant encourage enough to see something, Say Something. Right now this is an active scene in lisbon, were not going to narrow down to any area. You can see were in specific areas due to different evidence thats been obtained. Is it basically you wait for someone to call you to search that area. Are you working on a grid pattern . Can you explain the method . Im not giving you the details because its active. But we have our federal partners, state partners, local pds, not just lisbon here, youll see a lot of people in different uniforms. Last night there was Police Agencies from all across the state responded to assist with everything going on. Obviously its very tragic what went on next door in lewiston, but the biggest thing i want to get out to everybody that i can right now. If you see something in lisbon that is suspicious, i want you to call and explain something to the dispatcher. Go on to the Public Safety site, you can read that, theres a lot of information and with that please give us a call. Do you believe that hes alive and hes in this area still . Is that what you believe at this point . Every option is open and well investigate this until we locate him. Can you talk about being sheltered in place, people just joining us. What is your message to people . This is still a pretty serious situation here. I guess the biggest message is, our community is our biggest supporter. So were very transparent here, the pd, our community is very transparent with us. They call us and thats how we solve things. Thats how we solve crimes. A horrific crime happens we are relying on our community. Give us information if we see something. I think thats one of the reasons why we were so busy all night long, chasing things across town. Obviously a tragic incident happened but theyre reaching out with stuff because they know were going to look into it. There was a complaint earlier with people saying there was screaming going on across the street. We showed up, it turned out to be goats. But we thank them because any information could be something we need. Stay in the their houses and keep the doors locked . Whats that. You want people to stay in their houses, keep the doors locked and call you if they see him. Yes. Stay inside, shelter in place in lisbon. The county put it out. Im saying as far as lisbon goes, if you see something call us. Is there any chance he may have fled in another car . Theres reports of another car, perhaps a suburban or something that he may have been in that has crossed into massachusetts . I dont have any of those details. One of the reasons i ask is i see you guys out here, but, you know, were not seeing this massive kind of like search through the woods, search through different locations here. And im wondering if theres some information that you have youre seeing the local pd, but there are federal and state here. And there is aerial here as well. They were here earlier but not up as well. Correct. Its coordinated, everything thats happening. So everything is happening in a coordinated effected. I cant get into the details of how were doing anything. Right. Chief you talked about everything, all the work the different departments did all night. Can you talk about the resiliency of officers in a tough situation. I just say that maine is lucky to have the officers and the dedication we have. You know, we all do this job for a reason. It doesnt matter if its maine or across the country, were all short staffed. Were fortunate in lisbon were not as short staffed. But we want to help people. We want to find the suspect, find justice. Thats our maine goal. On a personal level what was your reaction when you heard the tragedy, just a town over and now the search has boiled into our town. Its an absolute tragedy what went on. I cant get into the details anymore. I can explain that as soon as we found out what happened in our neighboring community we activated our entire Police Department and sent anybody that was suited up to head up to the scene to assist. Myself and other officers in my department went to the businesses that were open to close up and go home before we had any information it was going to come in this direction. Everybodys main concern is keep the community safe. And theres 10, 12 cameras there and the biggest thing to get out to everybody is, please reach out. If you see something suspicious, something suspect right. You look in your yard, that door wasnt open, or that trailer wasnt positioned that way. You see anything suspicious, please call us. Because thats how were going to be able to Work Together and be able to get to the bottom of this. Has there been any reports over the last 24 hours of any stolen vehicles . In. I cant get into any Investigation Details at all. All the Investigation Details has to go through the state police. Which there is going to be a press release, if everyone is aware of it. 10 30. 10 30. Okay. How difficult is it to find somebody like this on the run in a Community Like this . Were fortunate we have well trained people in the state with the federal partners and local pds. So its coordinated efforts and just takes a little bit of time. But theyre working diligently. So is your working Police Department. Did you spell your last name. Mcgee, mcgee and ryan. I cant get into any details on that right now. What level of comfort or safety can you provide the community . What is what can you do, people are really on edge here. Rightfully so for what just happened in the neighboring community these are things that dont happen in maine but we have ourselves, our entire department out and other agencies out at coordinated locations all through town. If they see something and feel unsafe, if theres something suspicious, call us. We want to be able to alleviate any issues. Before i was going to meet with everybody here we cleared because there was reports of shots fired. It doesnt turn out to be with that. When we investigated that, we saw an open door in a garage. We selfinitiated. Turned out to be people yelling and screaming which then turned out to be goats. If theres information that hes not here any longer, would you expect that would be if theres any details can, updates to give you on the suspect is going to be the state police thats at 10 30. Absolutely, if its earlier, the Command Center will put that out. Were heading into a long stretch of no information. Actually, i disagree. Besides you, no one has talked. Im putting out information. You im saying. I appreciate that. All i can account for is what im able to give you. There is a lot of agencies involved and there is information that has been put out by Maine Department of Public Safety. Our local News Channels im sure can share that as well. Just trying to help. We appreciate it. I can say that, you know, everything is coordinated whats happening right now between the state police, federal and local. We have coordinated areas im not going to get into the details of the investigation because i cant, im not allowed to. That has to go through shannon moss, the speaker at the department of Public Safety and the state police. Chief, you talked about that being you said its been a long stretch. How are the officers doing across the departments from what you can see . Were all determined. Were all determined. Determined to locate the suspect. How about the coordination between you dont see it every day, New Hampshire, maine, and all these local departments helping out this area. How has that communication level been . Zero issues with communication in lisbon. We follow our training. We all switch on to a certain channel can speak to each other. I had agencies from all over the state in lisbon last night. And i have people not from lisbon, we can talk. We dont have all the same channels but we have one channel we can talk together and obviously were using that as a means of communication. Very clear from what we just heard is for the police in lisbon that this man is not caught. On the one hand its a good sign theyre continuing to try to crowd source as much intelligence as they can because they are clearly still searching for investigative leads here. On the other hand its not a great time they still need that kind of assistance. Nevertheless, theyre doing the right thin
