Im boris sanchez. Jake tapper is in tel aviv and were following the latest out of israel where talks are continuing to free a large number of the more than 200 people being held hostage by hamas. This as one of two israeli hosta hostages released yesterday is now speaking out about her harrowing experience. I went through hell that i could not have known. I was kidnapped on a motorbike on my side while they were driving towards gaza. As we got there, the people told us that they are people who believe in the koran and they will not harm us and we will get the same conditions they get in the tunnels. We begin walking inside the tunnels with the wet ground. There were guards and a paramedic and a doctor who took care of the fact we would have the same medicine that we need. There, we laid on mattresses. They took care of the sanitary side so we wont get sick and we had a doctor who came to see us every two to three days. As israeli troops gear up to launch a possible Ground Assault on gaza, Prime Minister netanyahu warned today that it could be a long war. In just the past 24 hours, the Israeli Military says it bombed more than 400 terror targets in gaza, killing several hamas commanders. Jake . Right now, the humanitarian crisis is gaza is dire. Residents are running out of food, water, and fuel. Today, the Israel Defense forces Chief Of Staff said efforts are being made to provide fuel in gaza, but made it clear israel will not allow it to reach hamas. Jeremy, the on going Hostage Negotiations are being complicated by a number of factors. Where do things stand now . Well, jake, these are extremely complex negotiations. The first part because they involve so many different countries. You know, the United States does not speak directly to hamas because it has designated it a Terrorist Organization nor does israel, of course, but qatar and egypt have been Playing Key Roles as mediators in these ongoing ganegotiations. And the goal now for the United States at least is to try and get a big batch of hostages released all at once. We have seen over the last several days as two americans were initially released then last night, these two elderly israeli women who were also released on what hamas is calling humanitarian grounds. Now, the goal is to try and get a larger group of hostages to be rele released all at once. There are a number of complicating factors. Not only the number of countries, but conditions. Hamas, for example, has been calling for a cease fire to release hostages. Israel said thats out of the question. Israel has previously said releasing fuel to gaza was also out of the question but today, the idf Chief Of Staff said israel will begin to allow fuel into gaza but they will ensure it does not reach hamas. Amid all these negotiations, we know President Biden and the israeli Prime MinisterNetanyahu Have remained in close touch to talk about the upcoming Ground Invasion and also these ongoing Hostage Negotiations. Yeah. Not sure how you prevent the fuel from reaching hamas given they control gaza. But jeremy, how could the Hostage Negotiations impact the potentially imminent Ground Incursion . Well, jake, for now, it appears that israel has delayed its Ground Invasion to allow for more time for these Hostage Negotiations. I spoke with two people familiar with these who told me israel appeared willing to delay this invasion for a few days to allow for some time for these negotiations to continue to take place but these people also said its very clear that israel is prepared. They are ready to begin that Ground Operation and that they simply wont delay it for more than a few days if no progress is made on the hostage negotiation front. Once again today, jake, we were driving along the border with gaza and in fact, the perimeter for where we are actually allowed in near where these hundreds of tanks and Armored Personnel Carriers and bulldozers are all stationed and prepared to go in, thats been extended. So there has been movement of troops and journalists and other members of the public arent allowed to go even as close as we were just yesterday. Interesting. Jeremy dimon in ashkelon, thank you so much. My next guest hopes he soon can reunite with his loved ones. He stayed behind at the Music Festival where we now know several hundred, 260 at least, were massacres. He stayed back to make sure his friends were okay, according to his brother who says he learned he was captive was kidnapped when he saw him restrained and bruised in a hamas video posted online. Urial joins me from jerusalem. Thank you for being here. I cannot imagine what youre going through. I have a brother who i love so much. What goes through your mind when you hear stories from the freed hostages talking about their time captive . Talking about not being treated as poorly as the you know, the 1300 israelis who they massacred brutally . Yeah, very to be honest with you, im happy to hear but need to see proof because i dont have any more information except of the video online that my brother get kidnapped. So i dont know if to believe it or no. You never know and i dont know to trust them after this. Youre now helping to care for his 3yearold child. What do you tell the child about his dad . What is he capable of understanding at this point . So, he what we tell his son that he is walking right now, is far away, and because theres many, many people that come to visit us and he wants to see his father and he see a lot of his friends. So we explain to him that his father is walking right now and everybody here come to help us and his job. Something like that. He start to ask where is may father . Where he is . He always want to be with his mom. Dont want to a second. You can see the situation. Its changed. Cnn spoke with you the day after Hamas TerroristsAbducted Elkana as the Music Festival. Do you know any more about his condition . If hes still being held by hamas or given to islamic jihadists or another group . Its disappointing but we dont know nothing more than that video. All what we can do is just to get my brother out with his picture, with his story, to the world to share. And to make sure everybody know about him. I really worry about his safety, about his health. And thats all i can do. We have talk with the government. He visiting us every two days but there is no new information. Nothing. So far, the Israeli Military, the idf, has held off on its Ground Incursion into gaza but they obviously continue to prepare for it. There are obviously a lot of concerns that any incursion into gaza you know, might have a bad effect on the hostages. If you could talk to netanyahu or to the head of the idf, what would you say to him . As someone whos brother is believed to be held in gaza right now . So, hopefully theyre doing something on the ground that nobody knows to get out all the hostages before they do anything that can you know, make this opportunity to get them out. Dont want to wait. My opinion is to bring my brother home as soon as possible. Bring them now. I dont care about nothing else. Bring my brother home. Yeah. Thats what i would be thinking, too, if it were my brother. I hope that elkana gets brought to his son, back to you, and his wife soon. Thank you so much. We are tracking Breaking News from capitol hill which started this morning as nine republicans running for House Speaker is now down to one. A short time ago, House Republicans had a meeting and revealed that tom emmer of minnesota is their pick for speaker but lets be clear. This is their latest nominee and we know what that means. That doesnt mean necessarily hes going to be speaker. Lets get to melanie whos on capitol hill. He wins the nomination, but he has some hurdles ahead of him as you see. Thats right. Its a twopart battle. He did win the gop nomination. It took him five rounds of Secret Ballot Voting but now the question is whether he can get 217 votes on the house floor, which both have been an Impossible Task in this badly divided gop. Now, emmer is taking a slightly different strategy than other nominees. He is currently having roll call votes Behind Closed Doors on his nomination to see if he can get to 217 before he leaves that room. He does not want to exit that room and go to the floor until he knows for certain he has 217 votes. Really trying to avoid the same public displays of embarrassment and dysfunction we have seen in the past. As of right now, we are hearing he does not have the votes. Opposition is over 20. Emmer is in the room fielding questions and concerns from members. We talked to some of those members even before the vote about some of the concerns. Concerns about his Voting Record on spending, support for gay marriage. There is also concern he is not closely aligned enough with former president trump. Lets listen to what they had to say. Would you be comfortable with tom emmer given his votes on spending . How concerned are you about his vote on samesex marriage . Very concerned. Vote against him . Yes. Any way youd vote for him . No. So of course the question is if and when emmer can get to 217 and if he doesnt, what do republicans do next . Do they have yet another candidate . Elect another speaker candidate or look at alternative options. I caught up with a congressman from ohio. Hes pushing a resolution to temporarily empower the Interim Speaker, patrick mchenry. The Interim Speaker can do more than just reside over floor votes. He said if emmer cant get there, he is willing to potentially bring that up. At this point, guys, emmer still trying to lock down those votes. I feel like weve been here before. I say that every time. Melanie, great to see you though even under the circumstances. Thank you so much. Another former trump Attorney Flipping in the Georgia Election subversion case. What this signals for the former president. And the president in court today in new york facetoface for the first time in five years with this man. His former fixer, Michael Cohen, taking the stand against his old boss. Live outside the courthouse next on cnn news central. Jenna ellis is the latest attorney to flip. She pleaded guilty to one count of Aiding And Abetting false statements. And for her to pay 5,000 in restitution. The former trump attorney delivered a tearful statement to the judge while pleading guilty, disavowing her participation in the former president s effort to overturn the 2020 election. I endeavored to represent my client to the best of my ability. I relied on others including lawyers with more experience to provide true information. What i should have done was to make sure the facts the other lawyers alleged to be true were true. In the fren etic pace to have attempting to race challenges of the election in several states, i failed to do my Due Diligence. I believe in and i value election integrity. If i knew then what i do now, i would have declined to represent donald trump in these post election challenges. I look back on this experience with deep remorse. That tearful admission comes after last weeks guilty pleas from Sidney Powell and kenneth chesebro. Elliot, if youre on Donald Trumps legal team, they continue to claim that this is a political hit job. Its hard to do that when your own former attorneys are pleading guilty. Thats exactly it, boris. In order for someone to plead guilty, they have to admit they committed a criminal offense and a judge has to accept the plea. If the judge thinks that either something is political or a person is just pleading guilty to make a case go away, they wont accept a guilty plea so the whole idea this was a hit job keeps getting undermined. If i knew then what i knew know, we all knew then what she knows now. It was widely available to her. She was doing interviews. She wasnt in a silo. She was confronted with the information over and over and over again including by bill barr. Is she a witness that is really going to work for the prosecution . Yes. In so far as shes an attorney who would have had private conversations with the defendant and Rudy Giuliani and others. The thing thats hard to stomach is this i didnt exercise Due Diligence. If youre an attorney, you have one job. That is to exercise Due Diligence on behalf of your clients. Now all of a sudden once youve been charged with a crime and are starting to come to jesus about it, it is nonsense. You made a point to emphasize giuliani here. How much trouble does this mean for the former new york mayor . Certainly trouble, maybe more than the former president. She interacted with the him indirectly. Its hard in these conspiracies to tie it to the person at the top but when one person is testifying, they can testify against other codefendants. Look, this is not great for donald trump. Anytime youre charged with other defendants in your criminal proceeding and they start pleading guilty, its more likely theyll have evidence against you. You would think there would be others who might plead guilty in this georgia case. Even so, just now with three former attorneys, what does this mean in the federal Election Subversion case . Because of the fact that this is all Election Subversion and facts as alleged in georgia also irrelevant to the federal election case, these folks may have testimony to provide there and perhaps theyre having conversations with jack smith. I know it sounds cute and coy but its not just great, but its really not good when your folks start pleading guilty in the other case as well. Elliot, thanks so much. So he was once Donald Trumps loyal fixer but now Michael Cohen is testifying as the star witness in the former president s civil fraud case in new york. Yes. So the two, they havent come facetoface in five years, not since cohen flipped on his old boss testifying before congress about some of trumps alleged business practices. Allegations that triggered the lawsuit that brought the two full circle to where they are right now. Bryn is joining us from outside of the courthouse. What are we learning from cohens testimony and what is it like there inside the courthouse . Reporter yeah, dramatic. Were actually at a lunch break right now, but Michael Cohen was on the stand before that resces was taken being questioned by the new York Attorney generals au office. He talked about those 2018 federal convictions. His role within Trump Organization and for the president as his personal attorney then it got to the part that is really pivotal to this case. Thats testimony Michael Cohen said that basically in conversations with donald trump, trump would just throw out a number, a net worth he wanted to achieve and cohen claimed or testified that it was up to him and former cfo Alan Weisselberg to reverse engineer in his words, the numbers, to achieve that net worth. Thats basically the whole crux of this case summed up in that sentence. Thats what we left on with this recess. Pretty dramatic moments. The fact that cohen and trump have not been in the same room together for five years. Theyve taken out lashings at each other publicly, on social media, in interviews, but facetoface is a whole different story. My colleagues said trump just sat back in his chair with his arms crossed Listening Intently to the testimony of cohen. When they left for lunch, cohen said quote, that was a heck of a reunion. As for trump, he said Michael Cohen has a horrible record and hes not too worried about his testimony. We expect cohen to be on the stand today and tomorrow. Well see how the testimony picks back up but again, before he left, that was the main part of the new york generals case in this civil trial is what cohen said right there. Guys . Thanks so much. House republican lawmakers have picked tom emmer as their new speaker designate. Its the third time republicans have tried to find a new speaker. Well take you live to capitol hill to see if the third time is the charm. Yes. Plus, a dock tor in gaza is warning the enclave, the largest hospital, could become a mass grave if fuel runs out. Were going to take a look at the push to get aid in and speak to an american who is desperately trying to get out of the gaza strip. As the humanitarian crisis in gaza continues to grow worse by the day, the idf says that fuel will be sent to civilians in gaza but will not allow it to reach hamas. Food, water and fuel is quickly running out as israeli air strikes continue. According to the u. N. Humanitarian coordinator, hospitals and Emergency Services are on the breink of collapse. You can see First Responders taking patients into dark hospitals. Doctors warn gazas largest hospital will become a mass grave if it runs out of fuel. Salma, what more do we know about this promise from the idf to allow fuel to reach Gaza Civilians and will it be enough . So this is an extremely important update and it does offer a sliver of hope. Its a softening of a position weve seen from israeli officials throughout the last couple of weeks which is that fuel would not be allowed into the gaza strip but in an interview just a short time ago, the idf Chief Of Staff saying we will allow feel if it is to treat civilians. Whats missing is the actual logistics of how that would take place and time is of the essence here. In fact, the group on the ground that provides most of the support says they could shut down operations tomorrow if fuel is not let in. Thats what were hearing that fuel is a lifeline. Without feel, they cant power the hospitals, pump water. So again, every hour counts here. Strikes continue. What have we heard from inside the strip . Not just continuing but actually intensifying. Being ramped up as israel p prepares for the potential Ground Incursion. In fact, Palestinian HealthOfficials Say the last 24 hours was the deadliest so far. More than 700 people killed. Many of them children. I want to show you the aftermath of just one air strike and i do want to warn our viewers, these images are graphic. After an overnight strike in gaza. Stunned survivors stumble out. People nearby rush to help. Theres no ambulance we have to get people out, a man shouts. Men dig with bare hands. It is dark, dusty. The screams are jarring. Look at the children look at the children he says. It is sheer chaos and carnage. This is the aftermath of just one of the hundreds of bombings a day that batter the gaza strip. The scene captured by a journalist. Israel says it is targeting hamas and aims to wipe out the group but palestinians and aid agencies say it is civilians that are dying by the hundreds. Drone footage shows entire neighborhoods already levelled by the near constant bombardment. Nothing is spared. Schools, mosques, shelters, medical centers all struck according to the united nations. Gaza is all too familiar with war but has never seen it on this scale. And for survivors, there is little life left here. Baby halibi is now an orphan but hes far too young to understand that. What did this little boy do . An Air Strike Hit his house while he was sleeping, his uncle says. His whole family was killed. Hes the only survivor. Stop this. Stop this suffering. There are calls for israel to pause hostilities but the idf is only ramping up its attacks and preparing for whats expected to be a full on Ground Invasion of the enclave but gazans say they can endure no more. Hama says nearly 50 members of his extended family were killed after they followed israels evacuation instructions. We were hosting our family from the north. 50 to 70 people because it was supposed to be safe, he says. But at dawn, our home was bombed. We dont know what to do. Weve lost our minds. Gaza is praying for relief. But the cries of anguish here are so far unheard. The bloodshed wont stop. Now there are reports that israel may consider pausing hostilities to allow more hostages to be released of course in tense diplomatic efforts to make that happen, jake. Thank you so much. As many as 600 americans remain trapped in gaza and are still not able to get out. That number includes 36yearold massachusetts resident, abud, his wife and their 1yearold son. The family traveled to gaza for a vacation to visit family and friends. Its a vacation that has of course turned into a nightmare for them after being trapped in gaza after hamas launched that Surprise Attack on israel october 7th. He joins me now on the phone. I know youve been working with u. S. Officials at the State Department to try to get out of gaza by Crossing The Rafah Border Into Egypt for quite some time. What can you tell us about the status of those talks . How come you havent been able to get out . Thanks, jake. I think the question that we ask every day multiple times a day in the north in cairo and we, the short answer is we dont know why its taking this long. Weve been in touch with the state Department Since day one of this war. On october 7th, that saturday. Asking for help and to exit gaza before it gets too bad or too late. And after repeated attempts from State Department, the crossing, all have failed so that attempt on saturday, there is no clear timeline. Its so upsetting. Theres another woman with three kids that weve been on my show the lead that weve been following her journey and been trying to help her get out. I asked Jake Sullivan about the problem two sundays ago and he said that egypt and the israelis had agreed to let americans out and at one point, hamas stood in the way. Do you have any idea what the hold up is and you might not be able to speak freely so let me ask this. Whats your message to President Biden right now . What do you want President Biden to do right now for you and the other americans in gaza . I can speak on behalf of all americans in gaza, many of whom are friend, many of them ive gotten to meet while we all collectively have attempted to cross three times. Weve seen the same places. We chitchat to get to know each other. I speak on behalf of everyone saying that we feel theres more that could be done by both President Biden and blinken. I think the insolence that the u. S. Mrkadministration has in t region, partners with israel and egypt and through other mediators to get us out of gaza. I think thats the sentiment here. Theres not enough being done. 17 days from the start of the war and yet were still stranded in gaza and there is no explanation that we could come up with on our own. There is no explanation that weve heard from the State Department and i want to make it something jake as well. When we have attempted at least three times and the woman you speak of is actually my sister, have helped her at the crossing with her three children, youngest 2 months old. Her first attempt there, there was an air strike at the crossing. She had to flee for her life with her children. Every time we showed up at the crossing, theres no one. No one presenting us with crossing and few guards that are just guarding the main gate just to make sure no one is jumping given its an actual border. Hey, we never got the message that you are supposed to cross today. So were caught up in this situation. Actually, on the third attempt last saturday when we were notified by the state Department Early in the morning about 7 00 a. M. That the crossing would be open at 10 00 a. M. Local time and we should get there to be safe in order to cross. I specifically repeatedly asked two contacts at least from the State Department. One in washington, d. C. Whether they have confirmation from egyptian authorities that there is coordination for us to be able to cross. That were not just hearing from the press that the crossing is supposed to be open and we should just get there. There is an actual active coordination and neither contact was able to confirm. Eight to ten hours just waiting outside for something to happen and nothing happened. We dont have a message from the egyptian side that we should let them through. We cant let you through. So, stay on the phone. I have to go to commercial break but stay on the phone. I want to get your number. I want to take up your case. And we dont have a great connection right now but i want to stay in touch and keep bringing your story until we get you and your wife and your kid out. Okay. So stay on the phone. In the meantime for our viewers, were monitoring a White House Briefing right now. John kirby is speaking to reporters. Were going to bring any headlines to you as they come. Stay with cnn. House republicans have just picked congressman tom emmer as their newest speaker nominee but its still not a done deal. He must now secure the 217 votes needed on the house floor to win the gavel. Joining us now is Dusty Johnson of south dakota. I know there are conversations happening so i appreciate you coming out to chat with us. Does tom emmer have your vote for speaker . He does and hes got the votes of almost 200 of us inside the room. The issue is that you have to have 217 votes to become elected speaker. I suspect democrats arent going to help him at all. That means weve got work to do to make sure the team understands hes won in essence the primary and we need to unite and go to the general election on the floor. We need to make this guy speaker so we can get back to work. The last three weeks has been an embarrassment and weve got to do better starting today. Our reporting is that in a vote Behind Closed Doors, some 26 members have voiced opposition to his speakership. I think you told a member of the cnn team that you believe that he was moving some of the opposition. Whats your understanding of why . Why theyre opposed to him . The reasons are kind of all over the board. Some are personality based. Some are related to votes. Some are the fact they just i think people were angry. Some folks dont like the fact Kevin Mccarthy was brought down and jim jordan was brought down. I think some people are just looking for their pound of flesh but ultimately, hes resolving each of those issues. Hes made a decision to stand in front of the room with 221 colleagues. Hes having them come to the mike and talk about what is their beef with them. Responding in realtime, heres what i was thinking with that vote. Heres what leadership was thinking with that strategic decision. Heres where we need to go. Ultimately, i think hes winning over converts because hes showing a vision and hes not scared of the fight. This is a guy who will stand on the firing line and i think you have to have thick skin to be speaker of the house. Hes showing its true for him. Some in your party have expressed apprehension about whether hes sufficient wly aligned with former president trump. Whats your message to those who are opposed to emmer on those grounds . I dont think these Leadership Elections should be about any one particular person. We have a country that needs to get back to being governed. A southern border thats a mess. Were 33 trillion in debt. Weve got an ally literally at war for their existence. There will be time for their personality gains, to figure out whos more or less loyal to any republican president ial candidate, but right now, weve got to get back to work and i think emmers going to give us a real opportunity. By the way, i think jordan, scalise, and mccarthy would have all given us an opportunity to move forward. Tom emmer is the guy whos won todays vote. I think we need to unify and get back to work. Congressman, if emmer does not get there in the room to 217 votes, how open are you to then working with democrats either to empower patrick mchenry, the temporary Interim Speaker or to vote present in order to lower the threshold for emmer to then win the speakership . Its going to be a little hard to have many republicans get excited about working with democrats. They certainly werent interested in that when they chose to vacate the chair along with the eight republican hard liners. I saved most of my frustration for the eight republican hard liners. This last three or four weeks of chaos has not served our countrys interest and the fact we had every democrat being with with those eight Hard Line Republicans who are willing to break the house without any plan for how to fix it means im not sure if there are any republicans willing to view them as stable, longterm partners in the management of this house. If they broke it three weeks ago, how can we guarantee they wont break it a week or two or three from now . When it comes to the work of this house, the farm bill to appropriations, were going to need to get 217 or 218 votes every day. Hopefully we can find some good, Common Ground to get that done. Thanks so much for the time. Appreciate it. Thank you. Were going to take a quick break. Well be right back. Stay with cnn. We are expecting to hear from the families of some of those who have been taken hostage. Lets bring in Shimon Prokupecz in new york. What are you hearing about this . Were just outside the u. N. Where some of the Family Members and u. N. Dignitaries from the israeli delegation are meeting inside then theyre expected to come out here and speak. Some of them are showing up here now. I just want to show you whats happening here outside. Were seeing photos of all those that were kidnapped all around this plaza and then over this way, theyve actually placed shoes near the names and the posters of those who were kidnapped. To symbolize theyre human. These shoes are being used to symbolize them. These are not shoes that belong to those that were kidnapped but the organizers here felt this was something to do to humanize those that were kidnapped. Theyre here today calling attention to their kidnapping. Obviously, their release, and they just want people to realize what so much of this is about and so theyre meeting here with u. N. Officials. The israeli delegation. And theyre expected to meet with City Officials later then momentarily we do expect to hear from some of the Family Members. All right, thank you so much for that. Were going to take you back to israel here in just moments. Cnns live special coverage will continue right after this quick break
