hello and welcome to our viewers joining us here in the united states and all around the world. we continue our coverage of israel at war. i'm rosemary church. israel's mar 300 targets were hit overnight by air strikes in gaza. according to the idf, tunnels and operational command centers belonging to hamas and islamic jihad were targeted. they targeted sites for the forces preparing for grounds operations. meech meantime, a senior israeli official tells cnn from will be no cease-fire, saying humanitarian efforts cannot interfere with the mission to dismantle hamas. the country's defense minister says hamas will cease to exist soon. >> translator: this needs to be the last maneuvering inside gaza, given the simple reason that hamas will cease to exist. it might take a month, two. but eventually, there will be no hamas. journalist elliot gotkine is joining me now. we're seeing air strikes in gaza. what's the latest on that? and what are you learning about the imminent ground incursion? >> reporter: israel said it would be ramping up air strikes against militant targets inside gaza strip. in that, it's been true to its word. in the past day, 320 military targets. they have been struck in the last day. this could be the largest number in one-day period. you say, they've been targeting, tunnels, operational command centers, that contained islamic jihad and hamas. and containing anti-tank missile cells, as well. on top of that, targeting -- hitting targets it says poses a threat to the troops, that are preparing for a ground invasion. we've seen the first clashes inside the gaza strip, since israel started air strikes in the wake of hamas' terrorist attack of october 7th. in that clash, one was killed and three injured, when a missile hit the vehicle they were in. it destroyed a couple of bulldozers and a tank. clashes have begun. it doesn't necessarily signal the starting gun to a full-blown ground invasion. the only question is when it's going to happen. >> president joe biden is asking israel to delay its invasion into gaza. any sign that will happen? and how much influence does the u.s. have on an issue like this? >> reporter: the u.s. has influence over israel more than any other nation. as antony blinken was staying i response, it's a decision for the israelis. israel was never going to go in when the president of the united states was in town. now, why is there a delay? a number of reasons. one can be the u.s. leaning on israel to do so. too facilitate more aid in the gaza strip. we saw two israeli americans released on friday. other reasons can be the weather. understanding the layout of tunnels underground. trying to gather intelligence where bodies were taken from israel into the gaza strip on october 7th. when president biden was asked, about the possibility of the u.s. to lean on israel to delay an invasion, his response was, i'm talking to the israelis. not much being given away by president biden. there's a flurry of activity. president biden speaking with the pope and other world leaders. we're expecting the french d the dutch minister to come to israel, as well. no doubt, the ground invasion is one of the subjects. nic robertson is in seurat at the border with gaza and has more on the next stages of the war. >> reporter: bristling with battle-ready troops, farmers' fields north of gaza, churn with the controlled fury of a nation readying for an incursion to strike hamas. yet, they are waiting with no explanation why. it feels that the rush of battle-readiness has passed. the troops are deployed, standing by. the question is, how long can they be kept out here? affording to the former idf general, as long as needed. there are military gains. >> we are now improving our intelligence and our capacity of targets. >> reporter: but the political calculation is more difficult. >> they understand that the legitization window is closing quickly. >> reporter: civilian losses in gaza are growing. more than one-third of them children, according to palestinian health officials. lengthy negotiations have led to two american hostages released. there's a tiny amount of humanitarian aid has crossed into gaza. israel fears ends up in hamas' hands. prime minister benjamin netanyahu's calculus of when to send in ground troops has never been so fraught, under pressure from the white house, for more hostage releases. >> netanyahu is in real problem. he can't say no to biden. he cannot say yes to the humanitarian aid that drifts into northern gaza. >> reporter: he is under pressure at home, too. military and others hawkish for a decisive blow against hamas. >> we're finishing the ground force. we've changed plans. we're going to maneuvers. >> reporter: netanyahu's dilemma compounded by his dependence on american weapons. >> the pressure from washington is real. is real and strong. and the prime minister says many times to his ministers, listen. we're getting from the united states, more than you know. >> reporter: where less than a week ago, these fields were teeming with tanks. troops making last-minute repairs. today, there are just tracks in the sand. >> reporter: a soldier's jacket here. bread and a bag on the table. the question is, where have all the tanks gone? forward for an incursion? or back to base for a pause? close to the front line in gaza these days, more questions than answers. an incursion highly probable, but when? nic robertson, cnn, seurat, israel. some relief aid trucks are arriving in gaza. they don't include fuel. 14 humanitarian relief trucks sponsored by the red crescent and the u.n., entered gaza on sunday evening, carrying food and medicine. officials say, it's not enough to meet the needs of the people. scott mccleon has more on the situation in gaza. his report contains graphic images. >> reporter: those who arrive at the hospital in central gaza alive are the lucky ones. there were five air strikes near the hospital. this video, shows the smoke from one nearby. some 110 bodies were brought here overnight. and this morning, one medical source tells cnn, the morgue is full. the rest of the bodies are out in sheets in the hot of the day. residents try to find their loved ones. finding them confirms their worst fears. inside the hospital, children including a toddler are among the dead. several of the victims were found with names written in arabic on their legs. a common marking, as parents try to make identification easier if they are their kids are killed. this hospital is located outside of the area of northern gaza, that israel is trying to get civilians to evacuate. on saturday, the idf dropped leaflets that said everyone who chose not to evacuate, might be considered as a partner for the terrorist organization. in a statement, the idf confirmed it dropped the leaflets but has no intention of considering those that have evacuated as a member of the terrorist group. even though who have managed to avoid the bombs are not out of danger. the trickle of aid, 20 trucks, allowed to cross the border crossing on saturday. that's a tiny fraction of what is needed. >> 20 trucks to gaza will not change much. gaza needs at least 500 trucks daily for fuel, food, medicines and water. for 14 days, gaza got nothing. and its immediate need now is 7,000 trucks. >> reporter: images show trucks on the border and dozens more down the road unable to get in. aid groups say the death toll could skyrocket because of disease and hospitals that are overwhelmed and undersupplied. this shopkeeper is keeping the store open by candlelight. the shelves are bare. the world food program says the shortage of supplies is pushing gaza to edge of catastrophe. idf says it killed dozens of shifts overnight. but vows that they will increase over a suspected ground operation. conditions for the people of gaza worsen by the hour. we want to talk more about this. joining me from cairo, egypt, is senior spokesperson for the middle east, north africa, and eastern europe, for the world food program. thank you so much for joining us. >> thank you. >> israeli air strikes are ramping up, apparently for the next stage of its military operation in gaza. this after trucks moved through on sunday. what is the current situation on the ground in the territory, given the aid is just a fraction of what is needed? >> conditions in gaza are desperate. food and water supplies are running close. shelters are overcrowded. there's a shortage of fuel, that's crippling gaza strip. health services are collapsing. and convoys are rolling into gaza. that's a glimpse of hope. we welcome the opening of rafah border crossing points for the humanitarian convoys. that's a drop in the ocean. for every truck that entered gaza, 14 more are waiting outside. for every person that got assistance to, there's six more in desperate need. there is a good movement but we need much more. we are asking for sustained access. something continuing with huge quantities. what is coming through, is hardly enough for the needs that we're seeing inside gaza. >> do you have any idea when more humanitarian aid will get into gaza? and how are you distributing the supplies that you currently have? >> right now, yesterday, there were around 14. the day before, were 20. we're in this, you know, movement, of the double digits. we need much more to be able to meet the need. food supplies we're providing, can food, ready to eat food, because people don't have the ability to cook. there's no fuel. people are in shelters. the foods from the trucks to the houses and are distributed to the shelters to the people that need it. the first day, almost 280,000 people have had dinner of canned tuna that came on the first convoy. the situation, as i described, are really desperate. and desperate times call for desperate measures. we want more access, and more capacity to get the trucks inside. i understand the situation in gaza itself is very difficult. the reality, we can get food through the border. you need to have safe passage from one ore ya to another. >> i wanted to ask you on what's happening right now in gaza's hospitals. israel has cut off supplies including fuel that will run the generators. >> fuel is essential for everything. the hospitals and the bakeries. the bakeries are running out of fuel. the situation in hospitals, of course, they are desperate, as we have seen on television. it's the only way you can run the medical equipment. from my end, it's having a huge impact on operations, interms of trucks on the roads. and the bakeries working and the shops being able to operate. >> thank you so much for joining us. we appreciate it. >> thank you for having me. when we return, we will show you some of the worldwide demonstrations in support of palestinians that took place on sunday. back with that and more, in just a moment. now thousands of people in cities around the world, marched sunday in support of palestinians. >> free palestine. >> free, free, palestine. >> free, free, palestine. >> this was the scene in brussels where demonstrators outside the european commission headquarters called for a cease-fire. and in bosnia herzigova, huge crowds gathered in sa sarajevo. and called for a halt of military operations in gaza. the french president and the dutch prime minister are expected to visit israel in the coming hours. they will arrive in israel where they will meet with benjamin netanyahu. other leaders joined the u.s. and canada on a joint statement of the conflict. they affirm support to israel and call for adherence to humanitarian law, including protection of civilians. joe biden has been working the phones this weekend, making calls to world leaders in an effort to keep the conflict from spreading. priscilla alvarez has details. >> reporter: president biden made calls to world leaders on sunday, as the potential invasion of gaza looms. the president spoke with leader of canada and europe, as well as prime minister benjamin netanyahu. according to a white house readout, the two leaders discussed developments in israel and gaza, and president biden confirming the flow of assistance to gaza. the two discussed ongoing efforts to release hostages. this is the eighth call between the leaders. all of the calls come in the heels of president biden's trip to israel. getting the assistance to gaza and getting the release of hostages held by hamas. in rehoboth, the president was asked if they are asking israel to delay the incursion. president biden said he is spoking to israel. it is israel's decision how they move forward. but it is important, and they stress, that innocent civilians are protected and assistance can get to gaza. president biden staying close with his national security team over the course of the weekend, as all of this unfields. priscilla alvarez, cnn, traveling with the president. china's special envoy to the middle east says the situation in gaza is severe and the risk of a large-scale ground conflict is rising significantly. according to chinese state media, they warned of armed conflicts spreading along the borders with lebanon and syria. he is visiting the region to promote peace talks and push for a cease-fire. what is expected to come out of the upcoming visit to the region of china's special middle east envoy? >> reporter: the envoy is there to push for peace talks. china is willing to do, quote, whatever is conducive to promote dialogue, to reach a cease-fire and to restore peace. and he adds that the risk of a large-scale ground conflict in gaza is, quote, significantly rising. china wants to present itself to the world as a neutral mediator. we have to keep in mind that it has economic interests in the middle east, access to energy, like oil and gas. that was on saturday that he was in egypt. he made remarks at the cairo summit for peace. he is also visiting uae, saudi arabia and jordan and countries in the region. and china will provide humanitarian aid for palestinians. and china wants to promote a two-state solution. according to the readout, to end the cycle of conflict between palestine and israel, it is essential to implement the two-state solution. establish an independent state of palestine and realize peaceful co-existence between palestine and israel, end quote. that's what we heard last week. thursday last week, from the top leader of china. xi called for a two-state solution. which we have not heard from china, any condemnation for hamas. china has not condemned hamas. that's prompted anger from israel, disappointment from israel. prompted criticism, as well. coming up, you will hear israeli officials urging more civilians near the northern border with lebanon to leave. we will tell you why. back in a moment with that. c'mon, we're right there. c'mon baby. it's the only we need. go, go, go, go! ah! touchdown baby! -touchdown! are your neighbors watching the same game? yeah, my 5g home internet delays the game a bit. but you get used to it. try these. they're noise cancelling earmuffs. i stole them from an airport. it's always something with you, man. great! solid! -greek salad? exactly! don't delay the game with verizon or t-mobile 5g home internet. catch it on the xfinity 10g network. the power goes out and we still have wifi to do our homework. and that's a good thing? great in my book! who are you? no power? no problem. introducing storm-ready wifi. now you can stay reliably connected through power outages with unlimited cellular data and up to 4 hours of battery back-up to keep you online. only from xfinity. home of the xfinity 10g network. israel defense forces say they struck 320 terror targets inside gaza overnight, including dozens of operational command centers and tunnels belonging to hamas and islamic jihad. a flurry of air strikes comes ahead of a potential military incursion. sources say, the white house is urging israel to delay any ground assault in order to allow for more possible hostage releases and more humanitarian aid to enter gaza. u.s. president joe biden spoke with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu on the phone. they agreed to a continued flow of aid to gaza. some trucks have entered the territory through the rafah crossing in egypt. b aides say the situation is dire. it was planning to carry out an anti-tank missile launch in northern israel. israeli officials say they will fund the evacuation of 14 additional communities near the lebanese border. many towns are already nearly empty. matthew chance has the story. >> reporter: it's quiet here at the moment in northern israel. that's mainly because the vast majority of the population of this city of 20,000 people, this town, have gone. that's true of towns across the israeli border. there's been on order for civilians to leave, because of growing attacks from southern lebanon where hamas controls the territory. palestinian militant groups are operating in southern lebanon. and the military says those attacks have been increasing in the last week or so. as you say, drone attacks taking place. drone flights taking place, across northern israel from lebanese territory. and anti-tank missiles being fired at israeli installations along the border. there's infiltrations into israel. israelis have responded in kind. they've been pounding areas with artillery strikes and air strikes in syria and lebanon. close to the border with syria also. they are warning lebanon and hezbollah, if it continues or escalates, there will be a strong response, indeed, from the israeli military. they don't want a second front to open up. they prepare for the operation, the land operation in gaza. they have moved tens of thousands of troops in this region, in preparation for what they say will be a determined and strong and destructive response against hezbollah and against lebanon, if the attacks from that part of the country, persist or escalate. the israeli president told cnn his country's army has recovered a hostage-taking handbook from hamas. that comes in the aftermath of the surprise attack on israel on october 7th. perhaps the most revealing part of this manual is the idea that hamas was never supposed to bring the hostages back into gaza. israel's president described the pamphlet as a detailed how-to guide for taking hostages. >> this booklet is instruction guide how to go into a civilian premises, into a city, how to break in. and first thing, what do you do when you find the citizens? you torture them. it says how to torture them. how to abduct them. how to kidnap them. joining me is graham wood. he's a staff writer for "the atlantic" and the author of the book "the way of the strangers: encounters with the islamic state." appreciate you joining us. >> glad to be here. in a recent article, you write that hamas' hostage-taking handbook is to kill the difficult ones and use hostages as human shields. you received that document from an official in the israel defense forces. what else does the document refeel about how hamas might be treating the hostages they are holding inside gaza? >> the document i received from idf and other sources, the other sources gave me parts of the document that idf didn't. it describes a program of hostage-taking. it was clear there was an expectation they would be able to take hostages and treat them with brutality from the start. the document says, for example, you should identify the problematic ones, the ones that might resist, and kill them first. separate the women and children from the men. and remove any implement they might be able to use to kill themselves. it says to force them into come clines. the game plan it describes is not what happened. hamas may have planned to take hostages into gaza. but the document describes having a standoff that was supposed to take place in israeli territory. they were surprised to get so many hostages and bring them back to gaza where they have leeway how to handle them. >> given what the handbook said about that, is there any idea why they changed the plan? and instead of keeping them in homes, they took them back to gaza. anyone understand why that was changed? >> i think it's straightforward, actually. they didn't expect, nor did israel expect, that when they went into israeli territory, they would have the run of the place so long. it was shocking, i think, to israelis, it took hours. like, 12 hours to have a full response from the idf. so, i think hamas expected they would have the full fury of a modern military come after them. they had hours of leisure, when they could do what they wished on-site. during that time, it was pretty obvious to them, they would rather not have a prolonged standoff in israeli territory when they could take everybody back. hundreds of people back and bring them in gaza territory instead. >> i wanted to raise a point. israel's president said it contained the instructions for the manufacture of chemical weapons. have you heard more on that? >> yes. i have seen the documents. and these documents are strange. i have discussed them with chemists. i'm assured that the chemical weapons are most primitive and least likely to work. the document is an expression of aspiration, rather than a fully fledged plan to kill large numbers of people with terrible, corrosive, poisonous gas or whatever. it's alarming, but unlike the hostage manual, it's not describing anything close to being able to taken to fruition. >> thanks to graham wood for joining us earlier. we'll be right back. welcome back to cnn newsroom. i'm rosemary church. the philippines have a chinese ambassador in a ship collision. both countries are blaming each other for the collision. the philippines says the chinese coast guard caused the collision. china says it took appropriate action. the philippines has ordered an investigation. in a statement, the u.s. state department said that china violated international law while conducting dangerous maneuvers. a synagogue leader is being moururned by friends and family members. she was remembered as a model citizen who was endlessly positive and loved bridging divides. cn cnn's omar jimenez has more on the memorial and the investigation into her death. >> reporter: the headline alone is a cause for concern. detroit synagogue leader found stabbed to death. it's understandable why some may jump to quick conclusions. it's what detroit police are cautioning against at this stage of the investigation. they have not announced an arrest of any suspect. and they have not announced a motive they have found in this particular case. but over the course of sunday, the detroit police chief put out a statement that read in part, while the investigation into the death of samantha wool at this time, no evidence is suggesting that the crime is motivated by anti-semitism. what wasn't in that statement, they ruled out this being motivated by anti-semitism, which highlights really where they are in this investigation, in the very early stages and why they are urging caution for people to jump to conclusions. on this block where i'm standing near downtown detroit, this is where police found the body of wool. they said they followed a trail of blood to her home. that's where they believe the killing took place. they have not released the identity of the suspect at this point. as for what happened, it did happen. and that's why this community is trying to figure out how to move forward at this point. a memorial service was held on sunday. speakers from those who knew her best, all the way to state elected officials, shared what they remembered about the 40-year-old. take a listen to michigan's attorney general. >> samantha may have been the nicest person that i have ever met or will ever meet in my lifetime. sam did more for our community, our state, our world, our lives. in her short time here on earth, than most will ever accomplish in 1,000 lifetimes over. and her killer will not rob us of the memory of her joy and warmth and kindness that she leaves behind. >> reporter: we also heard from a state senator who was with wool the night before she was found dead at a wedding. and the only consolation she has is some of her final memories with wool were of laughter and happiness. the fbi is assisting the detroit police and trying to figure out what happened here. the community is trying to move forward and process what happened, as investigators at this point, are trying to figure out why. omar jimenez, cnn, detroit. in washington, nine republicans have entered the race for speaker of the house of representatives. jim jordan failed three times to win the spot this last week. the house has been paralyzed without a speaker for nearly three weeks, which ousted speaker kevin mccarthy calls embarrassing. manu raja has more. >> reporter: the turmoil of a sitting speaker, kevin mccarthy was pushed out, after eight republicans joined with democrats and voted out kevin mccarthy as speaker. this was initiated by house republicans. they have not coalesced around everyone. the house cannot do any business until a speaker is elected. they are unable to unite behind any candidate. steve scalise was unable to get the votes. he bowed out before going to the floor. jim jordan the house judiciary committee chairman did go to the floor, three times. can could only afford to lose four volts. he lost 29. he bowed to reality and stepped aside. now, nine candidates have filed to run for speaker. it's unclear which of the nine will get the republican nomination. and more importantly, who can get the 217 votes they would need on the floor of the house to be elected speaker. it's unclear if any of them to can, given the sharp divisions in the ranks. >> it's the biggest f-you to voters ever seen. >> the americans are sick of it. most members of the house are sick of it. it's time for big boys and girls to stop with the nonsense. >> we need to get over it. we can't have government offline. >> i'm getting called from my constituents saying what is going on with you republicans? >> i think history will assign blame in the right place p the. >> reporter: on monday evening, when house republicans will meet again. the candidates will make a pitch to the conference. they will ask questions from the members. they do that one by one. and tuesday morning is a significant vote. behind closed doors, republicans will have a secret ballot election. a majority of the conference will vote to nominate the next speaker candidate. that person will be a secret ballot election. it's unclear who is the front-runner and who might emerge. we'll see how close that person gets the nomination is to the magic number on the house floor. 217 votes to be elected speaker. this is challenging for any republican candidate. in the house, 221 republicans. democrats will vote for the democratic leader. the candidate, the republican nominee, must limit defections in the ranks. it's unclear if any of them can do that after we've seen just republicans going after each other, after mccarthy was pushed out. unable to get behind anyone. unable to do the nation's business. and much business is waiting, given with aid to israel. calls for aid to ukraine. none of it can be dealt with. the republican agenda is stalled among this infighting. can they get a resolve this coming week? that's a huge question. a possibility it could still be unresolved and slip into another week if they can't get their act together behind a nominee. manu raju, cnn, capitol hill. there's a runoff after sunday's first round. far-right economist is one of the candidates in next month's second round. his supporters celebrated just as they did after his shocking win in the open primaries in august. he will face the economy minister. with 90% of the votes counted, he leads with 36%. thousands have fled the communities in israel, as the war rages on. they have no idea when they will be able to return home. that's ahead. more than 1 million gazans have been displaced since the israeli bombing campaign has began. since the outbreak of war, many israelis have fled their homes, as well, fleeing rocket attacks and the risk of fighting. we have some of their stories in this report. >> we had terrorists all around us. >> reporter: jennifer says she and her family woke up to the sound of explosions and missiles whizzing by. it was the morning of october 7th, in the village they live in israel, with the border with gaza. they realized they were under attack. >> we saw helicopters overhead. we heard gunfire near us. the terrorists were not far from where i live. >> reporter: she and her 5-year-old son are two of the more than 500 displaced people from israel's north and south who are now living at a jerusalem hotel, turned into a shelter. >> we take a hotel, house people inside, feed them, do activities. we're trying to create normalcy. we'll be hosting 1,200 people across the country. >> reporter: this christian organization, called the fellowship of israel, have mobilized to displace people who had to flee their homes. >> they want to destroy israel. >> reporter: this man and his wife live in northern israel. their son, joseph, warned them a war was coming from the south. now, they are among the displaced. they fled the village because they saw missiles launched by hezbollah intercepted above their heads by the air dome defense system. >> the house near the lebanese border, could you see the missiles? the rockets flying by? >> all the missiles. all the missiles. i saw the arm. >> reporter: according to the israel defense forces, about 100,000 people have been evacuated from communities near both the gaza and lebanon borders, due to the heightens risks of attacks. >> some of them lost homes and loved ones. i met a family just yesterday, the 18-year-old daughter, her best friend is being held hostage by hamas in gaza. the trauma is really pervasive. as a group of jews and christian arabs, really working together, how can we care for as many people as possible? >> reporter: many of the families share a feeling of uncertainty right now. when will the war end? when will they be able to go home? those are questions for which they don't have an answer right now. jennifer says her husband stayed behind with others, trying to figure out how to defend their communities against further attacks. >> we didn't just lose jews. we didn't just lose zionists or israelis that day. we lost tourists that came here for a celebration of peace at a party. we lost care givers from the philippines that were caring for elderly. >> reporter: all she can do is hug her son a little harder, pray for her husband's safe return and hope that something like this never happens again. not everyone is leaving, despite government evacuation plans. in northern israel, one woman explains why she and her family are staying put, even in the face of danger from skirmishes with hezbollah. >> i don't evict since my family is here and she is refusing to evict. >> why? not afraid? >> she's afraid, yes. she love the home. she would rather stay here, than evict. she fight her life on this house. she build this in her ten fingers, by herself. she don't want to leave the house. i appreciate your company this hour. i'm rosemary church. cnn newsroom continues with max foster, next. c'mon, we're right there. c'mon baby. it's the only we need. go, go, go, go! ah! touchdown baby! -touchdown! are your neighbors watching the same game? yeah,
