hello and welcome to our viewers in the united states, and around the world. i'm john vause at the cnn center in atlanta, with our breaking news coverage of israel's war with hamas. israeli airstrikes continue to pound gaza more, than 1000 targets have now been hit according to the idf. all of them liked the idea all of them lying to. hamas when the deadliest attack this weekend on israeli soil in many. years this is just a beginning of an israeli response, that price that prime minister netanyahu said will resonate for generation. as explosions continue to rock gaza, these raley defense minister has ordered a complete siege cutting off electricity, and water from israel, as well as food fuel, and other supplies. has been lit up from rocket fire and gaza, targeting southern israel. right now dozens of hostages are being held by hamas somewhere in gaza, a spokesperson for the military wing of hamas warning a civilian hostage will be publicly executed in response to israeli airstrikes on palestinian homes. the death toll on both sides has soared to more than 1500, including at least 900 killed in israel, where officials are still finding bodies after the surprise attack from hamas. for israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu. >> translator: we have the gun, and i emphasize we have only begun to strike out hamas. the images of the devastation from the hamas strongholds and gaza are just the beginning. we have eliminated many hundreds of terrorists, and we will not stop there. >> cnn -- 's scott has the latest for reporting in from jerusalem. morning some of the images are gruesome. [sound of artillery] >> the conflict that bright unprecedented scenes in israel has now entered its third day. , with the sound of sirens filling up the streets of tel aviv and jerusalem as people duck for cover. no places out of bounds, even at this funeral at a young soldier nathaniel young, killed on saturday. the response to the militant surprise attack, the idf says it has been striking key hamas, and other targets, and gaza. in israel's defense minister ordered a complete siege of this trip, halting supply of electricity, food, water, and fuel. the idea finally saying that has gained control of israeli towns infiltrated by hamas militants, still warning that things will get worse before they get better. >> we are still fighting, as we saw this morning that we would be in a better place, focusing on what we are doing, making sure that hamas pays the polite. >> israel now contending with a single mass casualty event in its history as the numbers continue to rise. in gaza smoke fills the air, strikes flattened buildings all residents work together to try to put out the flames. it is not enough as the death toll continues to mount in the besieged strip. >> come eight of the people of gaza, come help us, come to our aid please save us. they killed a. they destroyed us. >> either side shows signs of backing, down the international community repeatedly calling for a stop to the violence. as the escalation continues to grow, it is the civilians on both sides that continue to pay the price. hadas gold cnn, jerusalem. >> cnn's nada bashir is following developments she joins us live from london, we know the airstrikes have continued overnight, we know the rocket fire has continued from gaza into southern israel. what is the latest there are numbers, what is shaping up to be the number of casualties so far what are we looking at? >> well john the death toll is continuing to rise, more than 900 israelis killed, and 600 palestinians in gaza are killed according to authorities, the death toll is expected to continue rising. as we continue to see the exchange of rocket fire. but of course the focus right now, really, is what's next? we heard from benjamin netanyahu vowing a response of unprecedented scale, and we have seen those airstrikes continuing overnight. our teams on the ground hearing explosions within gaza, and of course as we have heard from the israel defense forces the intention here, according to the idf is to reach an end point when hamas's military capabilities are reduced to a point that they do not pose a threat to the state of israel, anymore. of course the concern for what comes next, we have seen and heard on the ground, israel ramping up its preparations for what is anticipated to be, although not confirmed, a potential ground incursion. we have seen tank, and artillery formations building up around the gaza strip. we have seen hundreds of thousands of israeli reservists called up, and the idf has called on citizens within gaza to evacuate. of course it is important to note the context here, there is likely going to be a devastating civilian death toll in gaza. we are talking about a very small island cleave, which is densely populated. it has been under a layer, and, and see blockade enforced by israel since 2007. since israel has told civilians to flee, there is quite literally nowhere to go. we have heard from the united nations warning that there is no shelter for palestinians in gaza. they say that they have more than 130,000 palestinians in gaza currently displays, taking shelter within you and schools. but they are almost at capacity. of course the fear is that the civilian toll is going to mount. as we heard yesterday from israel's defense minister announcing a complete siege on gaza. that means no fuel, no electricity, no food going in and of course as we have seen the idf says that they've targeting hamas positions in gaza. targeting military positions in gaza. it is almost impossible to in void a civilian death toll, and casualties. given the fact that it is such a densely populated area. >> not only the israeli side on the weekend, one of the worst blood baths of civilians happened at this music festival. hundreds were killed there, and they are still finding bodies there. what more do we know about how that attack unfolded, and how many people died? >> of course this attack was deeply deplorable, but hugely unprecedented. not only we've seen a mounting death toll of almost 260 bodies found according to rescue teams. but of course we know that there has been a hostage situation as well. dozens have been believed to have been taken captive by hamas fighters on the ground. we have seen gunman on the ground at the scene, on saturday, many taking hostages. and what we have been hearing over the last few days as messages from anxious parents, waiting for news of their children. take a look. >> this was israel's nova music festival in the early hours of saturday morning but in the distance rockets intercepted in the dawn sky. the festival then brought an abrupt terrifying and for hamas gunman watching a deadly rampage killing hundreds and taking dozens hostage. >> they were just shooting at them and taking them by force. waiting, my daughter tried to get to her car. they had the military people standing by the cars. shooting. some people couldn't reach their cars. >> that's when they took her. >> 21-year-old ady was also among them in the ambush. her mother hopes she could still be alive held captive in gaza. but fears time is quickly running out. >> i am a mother who is looking for her daughter. she is missing and i think i believe she is hurt. she is bleeding somewhere. and like me there are more, hundreds. families that are looking for their beloved. i'm a mother, i want to protect my kid. that is all i want to do. i'm sure that all mothers in the other side, in gaza, everywhere. they are not one, they're thinking the same thing. >> dash cam footage geolocated by cnn shows hamas government out of sight. shooting and killing people at point blank range. the site of saturday's massacre now stands eerily quiet. charred cars, lined the streets. hamas claims it is captured more than 100 israeli citizens. no exact figure yet from the defense forces. the result, dozens of families left in anguish. all hoping against hope for a miracle. >> she called and said mom, they are shooting at us. the cars hit. we are all wounded. i don't know how you, feel the nightmare of apparent sitting and hearing your child saying mom come and help me and we cannot do a thing. only to be with her on the phone, and say to her. mommy i love you. mommy, hide. >> as they're anxious wait continues, questions are also beginning to mount as to how an attack of this scale was allowed to take place. >> [speaking in a non-english language] what is happening is unbelievable, simply unbelievable. i, join we join in the grieving of all the families. we demand answers, all the answers will be happy ones, they won't be. we have had an update from the israeli ambassador to the united nations, it is believed between 100 and 150 israeli civilians, or citizens of other, have been taken hostage by hamas. there is concern for their safety, we have heard from hamas leaders saying that they will not negotiate on hostages while gaza is under israeli fire. even threatened to execute israeli citizens held hostage, if israel's air strikes on civilians in gaza continue. a huge amount of concern there. hamas has also said that the israeli citizens are just a risk of israeli airstrikes as palestinian citizens. indicating that these hostages have been dispersed across the gaza strip. >> now they're bashir live for us there, thank you. are missing after saturday's attack after hamas. they are live i cutie reasons we are not revealing his security at his location. how are you coping? >> excuse me -- >> how are you coping hurry living right. now >> not sure, actually we are in quite a terrible time i can see. the understanding we are all here -- we are not believing that this is what we are going through. that this is what our daughter, our friends are going through. it's like beyond understanding, it is very hard to imagine. this thing. >> what was the last time that you had heard from her, and some indication of where she was? >> noem called last saturday morning at 8:30, she was crying, and we could hear gunshots around. chu is saying that they arrived to a shelter, or a place and i told her i am sure you are safe, don't worry. i'm sure the people that will come to save you. these things are finish quickly, do not worry, you are in a safe place. we cannot know what happened after that. this was the last time that we spoke with her. after that was 8:30, 9:15 she called a friend from an ambulance because she is a paramedic, she called from an ambulance. she was assisting a friend there, that was shot in the leg. actually that was the last time someone has heard from noem. >> can you tell me some more details about what noem was doing, what she had been doing. we had some video at that concert, i think it was on the friday. this is a typical weekend, for a typical 20 year old young woman, this is not where you would expect a terrorist attack on this scale to take place. >> no, it's really like i said, it's beyond our understanding. you cannot imagine the situation, that keeps going to dance, and have fond, and going to club, and they are not coming back home because they have been captured as war prisoners. something that where is the right, crosswords unifil, worst human rights organization. this is beyond war. this is a crime against a crime against humanity. >> sorry there seems to be no other -- you just have to hope for the best, and try not to think about the worst. >> you know, we tried to keep ourselves healthy, otherwise we would collapse. it's very -- fragile our situation, is changing from moment to moment. we cannot help our daughter, we have not spoke with her. we know that she is in a bad situation, she and her friends, they are in a sense they are good people, they are young, they are beautiful, they are happy they like to help people. it's really wrong, it's really wrong it's threatening the whole global three free world. if we let this thing happen, if we will not raise our voice now, we will normalize the situation. and this is threatening all the democratic world, the whole free world. we should all raise our voice. these types of things cannot be happening. not allowed to take kids as war prisoners, that is wrong. >> kids at a concert. you have a beautiful, family i pray that they are all back together soon. >> thank you. >> we will take a short break, when we come back israeli airstrikes have been pounding us all night, we will have more on the idf and the conditions of war. right now what lies ahead. it is a 19 am in gaza, and day four of israel's war with hamas. a war that seems a little continue from mueller longer than most conflicts. benjamin netanyahu warning of a military offensive like never before. the idf says air strikes continue to hit targets in gaza, which is now effectively sealed off on the outside world cutting electricity, and water from israel as well as supplies of food and fuel. meanwhile hamas says they will execute civilian hostages if israeli airstrikes continue to strike palestinian civilians. and as many as 150 hostages including israeli army officers, and children, and civilians are being held right now in gaza. to joining us from tel aviv's lieutenant colonel -- spokesperson for the israeli forces. colonel thank you for being with, us. >> thank you for being having me. >> just some facts over the top the immediate area around, gaza have israeli forces restored security there. are you confident that the area is now 100% under israeli control? >> he asked the area is under our control, but in war nothing is ever 100%. but we have gained control over all of the communities that were overrun, and taken temporarily by terrorists. we have been able to clear, and evacuate many of these communities in order to allow the civilians there to be in a safer place, into central israel. so the idf can enjoy a much larger freedom of action. and, we have taken a lot of engineering steps in order to close back the fans, and the barrier that was breached in several locations. we are now patrolling, it guarding it with the various means. >> what's the latest in terms of rocket fire from gaza, with hamas self sending these missiles indiscriminately into israel? >> yes indeed they are. unsurprisingly. rockets continue to rain down on israeli communities. over the night the last hours, it has been no sleep. rockets towards communities in this throw so. there has not been any fire this night, but these rallies in southern israel are in shelters. and, of course subject to indiscriminate war crime. which is the firing of war rockets out them. >> israeli airstrikes inside gaza, the last report we had were more than 800 targets for. which idf says all sites were linked to hamas, can you update that number? >> yes we are nearing, let's add approximately 8000 into the figure that you just said. and over the last 24 hours, the idf has struck many hamas targets. all across the gaza strip. we are focusing our efforts on the military components of hamas. the aim is to degrade their military capabilities, and achievement and state at the end of this war. where hamas will not be able to threaten, or kill, or terrorize a single israeli civilian. >> when it comes to the air strikes on targets inside gaza, what determines if the gaza is in fact linked to hamas. if it is a military target as opposed to a civilian one? >> all of our targeting is done based on an updated realtime intelligence, that has been gathered, assessed, analyzed, and vetted over a long period of time. there is a rigorous process of vetting the intelligence, and making sure that it is indeed legitimate military target. the problem, the challenge, that hamas poses is there is not even one single building in gaza with a hamas sign on it. they do not advertise that they use civilian infrastructure. so for the unknowing eye, you will see a building collapse and he might be mistaken and calling it a civilian building. when in fact it is a building used by hamas for research and development, command and control, and any other topic that hamas needs office space, or otherwise for. we go through a long process of collecting the intelligence, vetting it before any target's truck. >> very quickly while we still have, you the situation to the north of israel. there have been some militant groups islamic she hogg and hezbollah, both backed by iran, claiming responsibility for earlier talks there. has that situation quieted down? what is the expectation for the latest in the north? >> the situation is volatile. we are vigilant, we have added tens of thousands of additional troops along the border. reservist as well as regular units. in anticipation of a hezbollah attack. we have strongly urged them to think twice before they embark on any such attack against israel. so far, the last few hours, the situation has been quiet. let's hope it remains like that. >> lieutenant colonel jonathan conricus, we appreciate your time. we will take a short break we will take a look at the years of conflict, bloodshed and destruction between israel and hamas, and what could be next in this war like no other. stars playing abu dhabi is a region's leading streaming service that brings you the magic of films, and the excitement of sports to your favorite device. be a television, on your mobile phone. but the business like ours we, need a range of talent from technology as well as creative. we have found abu dhabi to be our hub for accessing that type of talent. you're probably not easily persuaded to switch mobile providers for your business. but what if we told you it's possible that comcast business mobile can save you up to 75% a year on your wireless bill versus the big three carriers? maybe there is no direct involvement on saturday, over the weekend, but could hamas have pulled off this attack without the assistance, financial or military, from iran? >> essentially the answer they if they could not have done. an attack with this complex without iran's assistance. that assistance could have involved extensive training. the provision of military capabilities, the provision of ammunition, intelligence support. alternately iran would be involved, probably in political cover for undertaking the operation itself. iranians may not have been directly involved in actual fighting, but they were directly involved in preparing the attack, in planning it and probably is giving the go ahead for the execution. >> we will now hear from the israeli prime minister who now just simply wants to wipe out hamas. an incursion into gaza will be a bloodbath waiting on both sides but isn't the least bad option ago if is really serious about wiping out hamas? >> it is the early option, there is no way that they can essentially decisively defeat hamas, and wipe them out from the air. they have to go in on the ground, they have to hold and seize territory. they have to identify, locate, and destroy the key hamas fighter concentrations. including the hamas leadership. i think that it is really important for your viewers to understand that there is no quick fix here. it is not just a case of some missile strikes. this is war on the ground, street by street, house by house fighting. urban warfare is the most complex, the most dangerous. sometimes you have to do it. and i think this is one of those times for israel. >> what people don't understand about gaza is, what you knew say the gaza refugee camp it really is a senior block houses, made up of cement. made up of corrugated tin over these houses, in these tiny little narrow streets. and no one's knows what's waiting around any corner. that's why it is a death trap for the israelis. >> that is correct, it is the worst type of urban warfare environment that you can possibly imagine. the israelis are going to have to go house to house, and hold each street as they go, clearing out hamas fighters. they are going to have to make sure that those hamas fighters are do escape, with the immediate battle don't get around behind them and attack them from the rear. they will of course get support from the air but really it's the fighting on the ground that will be key. secretary of state anthony blinken who is speaking over the weekend. >> right now the entire focus is on supporting israel, making sure that it has what it needs as president biden pledges to netanyahu when he spoke yesterday. that they have what it needs to deal with the attack from hamas, make sure has control over its own territory. >> there is every reason to believe that this will be an extended war between israel and hamas, it's not like the last couple of. go-rounds u.s. ammunition stockpiles already being seen as little, because of the war in the ukraine. what happens now? >> well that is an interesting question isn't it? if you are moscow, you'd be looking at the situation in the middle east now as potentially advantageous. because essentially, the americans, and the europeans will need to support both ukraine and israel. and that could really strain -- there is a comment made a couple of weeks ago, by a european observer in relation to ukraine who says that we are at the bottom of the barrel, when it turns to arms supplies of ukraine. if you asked in european partners now have to support israel as well, it's preparing for other contingencies like taiwan for example, and end up in the pacific. it is really going to put us to breaking point. but we have little choice, because if we do not support israel, if we do not support ukraine they will gain advantages that will place western security directly at risk. >> malcolm it's always great to have you with, us your insights are is incredibly valuable, good to see you. >> thank you. >> still to come here from one of the victims that survived that deadly attack, at the music festival. with israeli ground forces advancing on causes outskirts, and with unrelenting airstrikes israel is preparing for a military response like no other. [sound of artillery] well, already more than 1000 hamas targets have been hit by israeli airstrikes. that's according to idf. and on the ground, the results are devastating. palestinian residents say buildings have been hit without warning and hamas is threatened at communal hostages in response to israeli airstrikes without warning, on palestinian homes. israel says it's putting gaza under siege. cutting off food, fuel, and electricity as well as water supplies. at least 260 bodies have been found at the site of a music festival, which came under attack on near the gaza border. cnn's jeremy -- spoke to one woman who managed to survive. images in jeremy's report are disturbing. [speaking in a non-english language] >> translator: i really don't know, it's a miracle, it's a miracle because people who were next to me did not get out alive. with a bullet in her leg, and shrapnel in her stomach 27 year old -- considers itself on the lucky ones. when rocket sirens sounded at the nova music festival in southern israel, hamas militants began killing and kidnapping hundreds of festival goers. her fate was far from sealed. >> translator: it was just shooting and shooting, whoever that could run ran and then others got killed. >> after a bullets pierced the windows of the car she and her boyfriend were trying to escape in. she soon found refuge in a small. shed crammed in with at least 50 other people. there are already people who were injured, sound their legs, some on their backside. some on their heads. i had a scarf i mean somebody next to me was bleeding, so i gave her a tourniquet on her leg. >> minutes later shots ran out. >> translator: there was silence for a few minutes and a police woman who is there with us simply screamed. whoever wanted to be alive, needs to leave now. those who could leave left. those who could not, i do not know what they took off running, but she panicked has her legs buckled, her boyfriend director across the ground and managed to shove her in the window of a passing vehicle. but, at every turn, more hamas fighters. >> translator: they just went with white pick up trucks. on each pick up truck there were at least 20 terrorists with grenade guns, shotguns, machine guns, or have seen anything like this in my life. >> seemingly encircled, she once again jumped out of the car and began running before finding an abandoned army tank on the side of the road. bullets reached her there, to. hiding under the tank, she was shot in the leg and shrapnel from a grenade pierced her stomach. >> in that time we couldn't see anything and they were taken. some people were taken. >> for six more hours she laid lying underneath that tank. israeli soldiers rescued her and evacuated her to the hospital where she was one of more than 60 victims treated. >> he thought you are going to die? >> yes. >> jeremy diamond, cnn, jerusalem. >> you're watching cnn newsroom, our coverage of israel's war with hamas will continue after a break. welcome back, israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu is promising's country will go after him off like a never before after the militant group deadly attack over the weekend. the idf says fighter jets have struck over 200 targets in gaza. netanyahu saying that targeting strongholds is just the beginning. the israeli defense minister has sort of the complete siege of gaza and will stop the supply of food, fuel, and electricity coming from israel. rockets are also being launched from gaza. a spokesperson for hamas's armed wing warns that he will begin killing civilians are hostages, about 150 being held, and broadcast those executions live if israel targets gaza with airstrikes that without warning. after four days of the conflict, hospitals in gaza and israel are already overwhelmed, treating thousands of injured civilians. many suffering horrific movements inflicted by weapons of war on the unarmed. for more now, cnn's becky anderson reports from a hospital in tel aviv. a warning, some of the images and becky's report are graphic. >> the sound becoming ever more present for so many families caught in the crosshairs of war. families like the shindler's, praying that their beloved -- survives. the 33 year old was at home with his wife and six kids when militants attacked the area around his house. as he tried to fight back he sustained heavy injuries and is now in critical condition. he live in a kibbutz called -- in southern israel, right next to the border with gaza. the location, mere steps away from where hamas militants bulldozed through the border, tearing down a section of the fence. an image that has come to define this historic moment in the decades long conflict. >> translator: they threw a grenade on the door in front of him. he fell on his back, i thought he died, so i didn't even cry for help, his wife told me. his face badly beaten. one arm amputated. the other left with only two fingers on his hand. he is being treated here in the medical center, the largest in israel it has been taking victims with the most severe injuries. so far, the hospital says that over 150 of the nearly 3000 wounded have arrived here since the fighting began on saturday morning. a director at the hospital says that the types of injuries that he is seeing are mostly gunshot or shrapnel wounds and blast injuries. there are currently 42 patients like i mackay in critical condition. the situation, he says,, could get much worse. >> we are looking at the potential for a ground incursion, should that happen what sort of numbers can you expect here and what sort of injuries? >> unfortunately it will be triple or quadruple numbers. it could get worse but we are ready. it is what we are trained ourselves for many many years. >> sadly this is not the first conflict. how are things different? >> the combination of civilians and military. usually in the last conflict, most of the casualties were army soldiers. >> for his family, this is not the first time that they are going through this pain. over a decade ago they lost his 24-year-old brother after he was shot by militants during a flare-up of tensions between palestinians and israelis. [speaking in a non-english language] he had his whole life ahead of him, his brother says. such wickedness, such cruelty. it takes me back 13 years coping with this massacre. this monstrosity, it is so difficult. but, despite the horror, they remain positive that they have no other choice. [speaking in a non-english language] we believe that i'm a high will get out of this alive and everyone else who his injured will, to. we want peace, this is all we want his wife says. a desperate plea for hope echoed by so many other families on both sides of this conflict. becky anderson, cnn, tel aviv. >> thank you for watching, i'm john vause, our breaking news coverage of israel at war continues with my colleague rosemary church after a short break. we'll see right back here. the power goes out and we still have wifi to do our homework. and that's a good thing? great in my book! who are you? no power? no problem. introducing storm-ready wifi. now you can stay reliably connected through power outages with unlimited cellular data and up to 4 hours of battery back-up to keep you online. only from xfinity. home of the xfinity 10g network.
