. hello, welcome to all of our viewers from watching around the world. infiltrators, firing thousands of rockets from gaza. we will go live as they respond to what they are calling a storm. another deadly strike on ukraine just a day after devastating attack on a village killed dozens and calls for sanctions over allegations of ethnic cleansing as armenia gets ready to take its demand for an emergency order. a state of war alert following the unprecedented rocket attacks from gaza. starting at about 6:30 a.m. local time when most israelis were asleep militants fired wave after wave of rockets perhaps thousands of them. israeli officials say there are multiple injuries, some of them serious. the military is warning a number of militants infiltrated the territory from gaza and issued a statement. civilians in the south expern central areas are required to stay next to shelters in the area surrounding the gaza strip inside shelters. it goes on to hamas terrorist nation is the sovereign and is responsible for this attack. now, we are live from jerusalem. tell us what is happening right now. >> i am standing in the stair well outside of where cnn studios are in our building. there are air raid sirens going off. this is the third one since this morning we have been hearing explosions over head that could be interceptions or impacts from rockets. i have not seen anything like this. 972021 when there were sirens and rockets fired towards jerusalem it was one or two time thing. we now have had several minutes of continuous sirens going off in jerusalem. that is why we had to leave the studio which is right by a window and come into the safety of a stair well where we have a protective space in case of rockets landing near us. this is going on all morning. unprecedented and this is war. that is what being made very clear by the israeli military who say they are in state of war alert and they are calling up now reserves, that is what the defense minister called for. we don't have an exact number of the number of rockets fired from gaza into israel, hamas, the military group that controls them says it has been 5,000. we don't have a number yet. what is new and unprecedented by this situation today not only the intensity but the fact there have been infiltration of militants into israeli settlements in the south. reports that it is confirmed by the military. just heard an explosion over head. we heard of militants in the back of trucks shooting and firing? what we know so far a woman in her 60s has been killed there may be more. we know of several other injuries including several that are severely injured. in terms of the military response i think we should expect a big one. the reserves are being called up. the israeli military are mobilizing and should expect a massive response. this is, i mean, honestly it took the israeli's off guard. i don't think they were expecting this. no clear trigger like in previous conflicts that maybe got people understanding that something would be happening. this came as a bit of a surprise at 6:30 this morning. it seems it was clearly coordinated. now, as you noted the hamas group called this the al agsa storm. they fired 500 rockets. what is interesting is what is happening recently known as temple mount, a place holy for jews and muslims. police raids, police big arrests or any major clashes at the compound it has been the visits of hundreds of jews to the compound over the past week that is also a jewish holiday. nonmuslims can visit. there are so many sensitivities about what happens there, what they are allowed to do if they pray or don't pray. they are connecting it directly to what is happening in the west bank for the past year and a half. increased level of clashes of israeli military into palestinian towns targeting militants, increased number of palestinian attacks on israelis. this is something that we have not seen before. the intensity of this, the infiltrations, we are continuing to hear reports that they might still be militants in the towns near the border. all israeli residents are advised to they close to shelters, do not go out, do not take to the streets, do not go to the beach. this is a state of war that i don't think they have seen in years in not decades >> it will be difficult questions to answer by the israeli intelligence. as you noted i mean, they seemed really to have been caught by surprise by this very orchestrated operation. >> reporter: yes, a major question, sort of, how did it happen? in previous rounds where we have seen rockets fired from israeli, i don't want to say people were expecting it but there was a clear trigger. there was a major military incursion or raid into the west bank that captured or killed high ranking militant. but this was -- i don't want to say a normal level of tension. for the last few weeks rising levels of tension, there has been some concern over what is happening in jerusalem there were protests along the separation fence between gaza and israel. nothing that raised to the level of what we have seen in the past that is why it is surprising. i do think that we need to keep in mind not just what is happening specifically here with israel and palestinian territories but what is happening brooder on the regional level. normalizations talks so i have to wonder if this is somewhat connected to those talks that are increasing and talking about what the palestinians can potentially get in exchange for normalizations with saudi arabia perhaps it is some sort of message sent to the broader area. they declare aid state of war alert. this is a major, major escalation. the type that we have not seen in many, many years, many, many rockets are fired. including here in jerusalem that is why we are in the stair well right now. it is new, the infiltration. we don't know how many there have been and if it will expand to other parts of israel as well. >> can you talk to us a little bit about the timing of this? is there a significance? >> reporter: well, today t is saturday t is a holy day for the jews. it is is another holiday. so, it is a significant day in terms of it being a holiday, the whole week. they tend to bring an extra level of tension. that because you will have jew that want to go there and nonmuslims there, jews, jewish extremist that say concern and i think it is significant that it is happening on the anniversary or close to the anniversary of yom war. another time they were caught off guard. you have to wound fer there is a connection to it happening on a holiday o a saturday, and so close to this anniversary of the war. >> we expect israel's response to be huge to this? they are calling out reserves now. the state of war alert. calling up reserves. i think we should expect a massive response towards hamas. gaza, to the likes withy have not seen in a decade if not more. >> all right. i will let you catch your breath and get to safety. i will check in with you in a little bit. for now, thank you very much for your reporting. all right, we will turn our attention now to ukraine. a city in one village are reeling from russian strikes that left scores of people dead and wounded. the city is where two people are dead after russian missiles slammed into apartment buildings on friday. the victims include a 10-year- old boy and his grandmother. while at least 30 other people were wounded. southeast of kharkiv funerals have begun. it lost 1/6 of the prewar occupation in a single strike. 52 people were killed on thursday. it prompted the u.n. to send its human rights investigators to the sites of the attack while u.n. human rights coordinators say the strike amounted to a war crime. let's get you more on this. we go live now from rome. what more have you learned about the russian strike in the kharkiv region? >> reporter: these are devastating numbers. these are numbers of injuries and casualties we have not seen since the beginning ever the war, almost 1 1/2 years ago. they are worried because there is so much he's -- trying to understand the dynamics of this attack. let's hear what the u.n. commissioner had to say on her visit. >> at this stage it is difficult to establish with salute certainty what happened. but, given the location, given the fact that the cafe was struck. the indications are that it was a russian missile. we said previously it needs to be looked at further. the salute clear thing there was a horrible loss of life and that is to be deployed in all circumstances. >> you know, you are talking about war crimes in a war that has, you know, filled with these sorts of atrocities and crimes. like i was saying the support is waning, about continuing support here. italy, across europe and especially in the united states. that is wearing on the military in ukraine. >> all right, thank you very much. for more on this i am joined by john denny. a research professor at the u.s. army war college. warm welcome, thank you for joining us. i want to start our conversation about asking you about the terrible attack on hroza. and the one in kharkiv. just seeing the horrifying consequences of assaults like that galvanize support for ukraine. does it make any difference? >> i will begin these comments are mine and do not reflect those of the united states government. >> i think it makes a difference. as a father myself when i read about it and children as young as six years old dieing in tragedies like this. it reminds us of frankly the moral depravity of the leadership, it can not be trusted. the military lacks moral compass and needs to be held accountable for war crimes. a history of doing is targeting civilians and civil infrastructure. if it moves the needle on public opinion, i think it may be limited, frankly. many of us have been, somewhat, used to it. russian attacks on civilians. with that said it could move the needle with regard to political support for aid to ukraine. >> let's talk about that and asking you about the future of the security assistance. what are you most concerned about right now? >> reporter: well, i think there are two things, i think in the short run of course, most concerned with getting ukrainians the amination that they need. artillery shells and air defense weapons to sustain their counteroffensive over the next month or so before the weather begins to play a significant role. beyond that i think we are concerned with what happens after the winter and into the spring. if the russians decide to launch a counteroffensive at that time the ukrainians are going to need injections of equipment and more. in the u.s. we have the ability sustain it for the next month or so given the current funding and what the administration has told us. beyond that there are serious questions, we know many of our allies have reached the bottom of the barrel. at least in the short run regarding their own stockpiles, over time that could change, though. >> that could change. let's talk about that. how reliable is u.s. support if there is a change in administration or if you are, you know, one of the eu partners and european policy makers watching now the dynamics that are playing out in washington at this moment. what conclusions should they draw about the role america is still prepared to play? >> there is a story to be told. the europeans are supplying more assistance, committed to supply more assistance in terms of economics, financial, military, humantarian. and the gop senators and more divided. i think in the end we are seeing a renewal of assistance once we are passed the political storm that is from washington. and challenge for expeurp nato. the longer it lasts. europeans supply a great number of military assistance, humanitarian assistance. the military aid, though, they are slowly bringing it on line more defense capacity. and contracts it will take time. we need to see it come on line. the europeans providing a billion euros to fund new ammunition as well as another billion to replenish the stocks of those allies that are donating. but, again, this is going to take months to unfold, not weeks. >> do the ukrainians have that much time? >> i think for their counteroffensive they probably do not. however, we know that russians are under the same contracts regarding their equipment and manpower. most analysts, at least in the u.s., believe that the russians are not capable of launching any kind of large scale offensive any time soon. >> thank you very much for joining us. >> my pleasure, thank you. growing number of migrants, how the influx is effecting local services and how residents are stepping up to help . let's get back to our breaking news. israeli military declared a state of war. militants are claiming to have fired some 5,000 rockets targeting airports and military positions. israeli officials say at least one person has died. several people have been wounded. israel's military says it is mobilizing soldiers claiming that a number of militants from gaza entered israeli territory. in israel, seven people were reportedly killed on friday in a wave of strikes. that is according to a volunteer group known as the white helmets, blaming the syrian government. the strikes happened a day after a drone attack killed 89 people at a syrian military college. cnn reports. >> reporter: friday, the death toll from a drone strike on the graduation ceremony reached almost 90 according to the official syrian news agency including 31 woman and five children. the agency claimed nearly 300 others were injured. the u.k.-based syrian observetory for human rights said the death toll exceeded 1 120. no one claimed responsibility for the attack. the syrian government blamed foreign-backed terrorists that usually refers to armed opposition groups operating in the country's northwest and that is where regime forces struck back. the white helmets, civil defense group which operates in rebel controlled areas claimed more than a dozen people were killed and more than 50 injured. while in the eastern part of the country, turkish drones and warplanes have been hitting targets. 11 people were killed in the strikes. more than half a million syrians have been killed in the last 12 years of violence. almost 13 million others have been displaced or fled abroad. syria is a mind field of competing foreign forces, russian, american, turkish as groups operate on syrian soil and israel's air force regularly strikes suspected targets there. cnn reporting from rome. next week the world court will hear demand for emergency order requiring the withdrawal of the military from civilian areas. the international court of justice is expected to hear the case on thursday. 120,000 ethnic armanians lived there. most fled. many are still in shock and coping with the fact that they may not see their homes again. some of them shared their stories. i want to warn you, what you are about to see may be disturbing. >> reporter: this is where the most desperate, are surviving. entire families have come. like them, they say their village was bombarded by guns, forcing them to flee. it was so painful to leave, especially for my children she tells me. we were farmers, we had everything. it was a massive war. we had no choice, she says. >> these people are the most vulnerable. they would obtheir street or in their car if they were not here. >> reporter: this emergency charity co-founder from boston has witnessed the physical and emotional impact of the evacuation firsthand. it gives us a sense of the trauma that people have endured. >> it is, if is mass exodus. some of the people here they are, third day, fourth day, they are still in shock. they don't know where they are. there are families here is aing i am waiting for the bus to take me back home. >> reporter: the road back is very long, at times it is winding as well. it is also very empty. as are the settlements across the border we managed to have a glimpse of it. all 120,000 people who once lived there have now evacuated those settlements and they come to armenia where may are living in hotels, refugee centers or with family.. >> reporter: in border towns where authorities are distributing basic supplies to evacuees. some spent a lifetime fighting for a homeland that is now lost. the government says that if you live in one of the villages they will protect your rights. do you believe them? they will never protect us, they are lying, she insists. i will never forgive them for what they did to us, she adds. there are some with far more than emotional scars. we visited one hospital filled with victims of a makeshift gas station blast in nagorno- karabakh where people have been gathering fuel. . >> you can hear screaming now. >> what is the screaming? the doctor describes the carnage you can hear the screams of agony from the wards. >> okay. can we go and see that now? >> in almost every room here there is a horrific story of pain and loss. 25-year-old victor asked us to hide the burns on his face. it was like hell, he told me. now i don't want anyone to see. his friend says he lost five members of his family in the chaotic evacuation. but no one seems to care, he told me. when he comes to us i think the world must be blind. matthew chance, cnn, armenia. spanish authorities encountered hundreds of migrants trying to reach the canary islands by boat. many rescued and taken to the western most island which has received around 1200 people in the past week alone. emergency teams say they are getting overwhelmed by the growing number of arrivals. some cases, local residents stepped up to help. >> reporter: it is basically about having a bit of empathy for the people arriving here without anything. as our ancestors did before, they immigrated as they needed to work and not the aids that we can have now in the spanish constitution, we remain human beings and we need to empathize. we contributed money and food to some of them. it is true. there are lots of them arriving. >> almost 15,000 migrants reached the canary's so far this year. more than 3,000 of them arrived just last month. c'mon, we're right there. c'mon baby. it's the only we need. go, go, go, go! when most israelis were asleep. militants fired wave after wave of rockets. perhaps thousands of them. israeli officials say there are multiple injuries, some of them serious and at least one fatality. in addition the idf says a number of militants infiltrated israel and the warning israelis near gaza to stay in or near their shelters. a live report from jerusalem is coming up in just a few moments. the u.s. labor market is moving full steam ahead into the fourth quarter adding 336,000 jobs in september. that is nearly twice the number most economists were expecting. there were gains across all major sectors but hospitality and leisure were strong. average hourly earnings rose slightly to 4.2% but was expected to rise a bit more. still, president joe biden celebrated the numbers. >> in the high share working age of americans in the workforce in 20 years. no accident. it is bidenomics. growing the economy from the middle out, bottom up and not the top down. inflation is coming down at the same time. >> the resilient u.s. labor market helped keep consumer spending strong but federal reserve officials are still concerned about infiltration. amazon officially joined the space race to blanket the globe with internet access with satellites >> and lift off. carrying the prototype mission for amazon. >> they sent up the first two satellites on a rocket from the kennedy space the americas, europe and australia. and, amazon's launch was not the only recent lift off. a spanish company successfully launched the country's first reusable rocket on saturday after two previously a uprising against israel and the idf declares a state of war alert . welcome back to all of our viewers around the world. you are watching cnn news room. breaking news, israeli military declaring a state of war alert and mobilizing the forces. unprecedented attack against israel has been unfolding over the past couple of hours. beginning with wave after wave of rockets fired from gaza. starting at about 6:30 a.m. local time this morning when most israelis were asleep. israeli officials say there were multiple injuries, some serious and at least one fatality. and they are warning israelis living near gaza are being warned to stay close to their shelters. i want to go back now to cnn reporter joining us live from jerusalem, what is the situation right now. >> reporter: well, over just the past few hours it is a nonstop sirens going off across israel. rockets including those towards jerusalem. we had four air raid sirens going off. if it happens while we are live on air we will take you with us. we have heard several explosions over head, i just heard another one. it could mean impacts t is an unprecedented intense situation. this is war. this is something that israel has not seen in ages, sort of coordinated surprise attack. it started at 6:30 in the morning with rockets being fired from gaza, towards israel and then something unheard of, infiltration. the military confirms the palestinian militants is in the community surrounding the gaza strip. we have seen alarming videos of them in backs of pick up trucks fires on people. a woman killed in her 60s, several others injured. there are reports of other fatalities and other injuries and it is not clear if those are from rockets from shrapnel or militants firing them. it seems as though it is continuing as we speak. we are seeing live images from israeli media from communities in southern israel where you are seeing a live security response to the militants going e essentially house to house, car by car to extract them out of the communities. they have been advised to stay in their bomb shelters but to completely lock their doors, israelis have been advised to stay near their protected spaces, sirens have been going off from tel aviv to the south and jerusalem including by the airport. as far as we understand the airport is still open. but, it is, it is a question if it will stay open depending on how the rockets continue. now, the israeli military declared a state of war alert. the defense minister has approved calling up extensive recruitment of reserves, they say. they are staying the hamas organization is responsible for this and they will face the consequences, they say, as well. hamas is calling it the al aqsa storm. it was planned to start at 6:30 this morning. the hamas organization claims they fired more than 5,000 rockets since this morning. we don't have a number from the israeli military yet but we know it has to be quite a bit because of the number of the sirens going off all morning long. i have an app on the phone telling me when the sirens are going off across the country, vibrating my phone nonstop. does not stop the number of sirens going off across the country and the combination of the rocket attacks combined with the infiltration, combined with the surprise attack. this is something that they have not seen in decades. >> unprecedented. reporting from jerusalem, thank you very much. and, we can go now to a reporter covering palestinian affairs. unprecedented events that we see unfold now for the last couple of hours. what could be the objective of this operation? >> i can only estimate, of course, i am covering the palestinian. for years i have been covering the hamas leadership. i can only assume the aim of this war, i would call it, maybe operation, it is not an operation anymore, declaration of war. the aim was to take some hostages, to kidnap israeli citizens and soldiers in order to do some kind of an agreement with israel in the future to release hundreds if not thousands of palestinian prisoner ins from israeli jails. this is usually what hamas has in mind in these kinds of operations. we see, we know already they managed to kidnap some israelis. i am not sure if they were soldiers or civilians. in the out skirts of the gaza strip inside of the towns and villages, but they did manage to do it. we saw terrible pictures of the massacres that took place in the towns and villages. we are talking about tens of casualties on the israeli side. in a surprise attack that there is no other definition than to call it a declaration of war. and, i am really sorry to say but in the next few weeks we will probably see the outcome of this, meaning the retaliation from the israeli side. there will be many casualties on palestinian side in gaza. i can only say how sorry i am for what hamas decided to do on behalf of all of the residents. >> i just want to make sure i understood you correctly. are you saying the men that infiltrated have taken hostages? >> according to what i know, yes, i did. not sure if they were alive or dead but we know they managed to take hostages into the gaza strip, yes. >> we understand that hamas is leading these concerted attacks, are there any other groups involved? >> reporter: right now it is under hamas leadership. shortly after the war started, meaning around 1 1/2 hours ago, the war live declaration of commander and chief or the chief of staff of hamas, he made a declaration in the media outlets saying that he calls it -- he named the operation and he said that this was a response for the attack, israeli attacks so called on a mosque and he swore that this operation will continue. no doubt that hamas took leadership and now leading the effort. they said they are part of this operation. but everything that we have seen, this is a very planned operation that managed to surprise the israeli intelligence. very reminding of six years 1973 when they surprised the israeli army. that was 50 years ago. the same now, hamas, holy day vacation, everyone here on vacation in israel. and in the first hours of mourning when everybody are going to the synagogues or resting in their houses this is when they pulled this operation. >> final thought from you, if it is confirmed these men that infiltrated israel have managed to take hostages how does that change their response for retaliating. >> i don't doubt it will be hard. we already know about recruiting all of the reserves, all israeli reserves to service, meaning we are going to see this country go into a war and getting into gaza. this will not be like a small scale bomb here or there from the air force or whatever. we are going to see a war on gaza, inside gaza, and again, with many, many casualties on both sides. >> thank you for joining us. >> thank you. we will be right back . israeli military is calling a state of alert and organizing its military forces. wave after wave of rockets fired from gaza, starting at about 6:30 this morning local time when most israelis were asleep. israeli officials say there are multiple injuries, some of them serious and at least one fatality. the israeli military is warning that a number of militants have infiltrated israeli territory from gaza. israelis living near gaza are being warned to stay close to their shelters. authorities in southern mexico are investigating what caused a bus, carrying migrants, to crash. it overturned on the curve of a mountainous road on friday killing 16 people and injuring at least 27 others. the officials say women and children are among the dead and that all of the victims are from venezuela and haiti. thousands of migrants from those countries have been traveling northward in recent months fleeing insecurity and economic crisis at home. the union government is said to provide more than $5 million to help victims of the flash floods that devastated a northeastern region this week. the money is earmarked for relief efforts and to rebuild damaged infrastructure. the floods killed 26 people and more than 140 people are missing. the government is advising all tourists to postpone travel to the area. the indian army says they can account for half of the 3,000 tourists who were stranded in the region on thursday because of the flash floods. people stranded for three days have been rescued. . hello, welcome to all of our viewers from watching around the world. infiltrators, firing thousands of rockets from gaza. we will go live as they respond to what they are calling a storm. another deadly strike on ukraine just a day after devastating attack on a village killed dozens and calls for sanctions over allegations of ethnic cleansing as armenia gets ready to take its demand for an emergency order. a state of war alert following the unprecedented rocket attacks from gaza. starting at about 6:30 a.m. local time when most israelis were asleep militants fired wave after wave of rockets perhaps thousands of them. israeli officials say there are multiple injuries, some of them serious. the military is warning a number of militants infiltrated the territory from gaza and issued a statement. civilians in the south expern central areas are required to stay next to shelters in the area surrounding the gaza strip inside shelters. it goes on to hamas terrorist nation is the sovereign and is responsible for this attack. now, we are live from jerusalem. tell us what is happening right now. >> i am standing in the stair well outside of where cnn studios are in our building. there are air raid sirens going off. this is the third one since this morning we have been hearing explosions over head that could be interceptions or impacts from rockets. i have not seen anything like this. 25-year-old victor asked us to hide the burns on his face. it was like hell, he told me. now i don't want anyone to see. his friend says he lost five members of his family in the chaotic evacuation. but no one seems to care, he told me. when he comes to us i think the world must be blind. matthew chance, cnn, armenia. spanish authorities encountered hundreds of migrants trying to reach the canary islands by boat. many rescued and taken to the western most island which has received around 1200 people in the past week alone. emergency teams say they are getting overwhelmed by the growing number of arrivals. some cases, local residents stepped up to help. >> reporter: it is basically about having a bit of empathy for the people arriving here without anything. as our ancestors did before, they immigrated as they needed to work and not the aids that we can have now in the spanish constitution, we remain human beings and we need to empathize. we contributed money and food to some of them. it is true. there are lots of them arriving. >> almost 15,000 migrants reached the canary's so far this year. more than 3,000 of them arrived just last month. c'mon, we're right there. c'mon baby. it's the only we need. go, go, go, go! ah! touchdown baby! -touchdown! are your neighbors watching the same game? yeah, my 5g home internet delays the game a bit. but you get used to it. try these. they're noise cancelling earmuffs. i when most israelis were asleep. militants fired wave after wave of rockets. perhaps thousands of them. israeli officials say there are multiple injuries, some of them serious and at least one fatality. in addition the idf says a number of militants infiltrated israel and the warning israelis near gaza to stay in or near their shelters. a live report from jerusalem is coming up in just a few moments. the u.s. labor market is moving full steam ahead into the fourth quarter adding 336,000 jobs in september. that is nearly twice the number most economists were expecting. there were gains across all major sectors but hospitality and leisure were strong. average hourly earnings rose slightly to 4.2% but was expected to rise a bit more. still, president joe biden celebrated the numbers. >> in the high share working age of americans in the workforce in 20 years. no accident. it is bidenomics. growing the economy from the middle out, bottom up and not the top down. inflation is coming down at the same time. >> the resilient u.s. labor market helped keep consumer spending strong but federal reserve officials are still concerned about infiltration. amazon officially joined the space race to blanket the globe with internet access with satellites >> and lift off. carrying the prototype mission for amazon. >> they sent up the first two satellites on a rocket from the kennedy space center in florida. friday, long-range plans called for more than 3200 amazon satellites to beam internet connectivity to the ground. elon musk and starlink has 4500 providing internet to motorcycle of the americas, europe and australia. and, amazon's launch was not the only recent lift off. a spanish company successfully launched the country's first reusable rocket on saturday after two previously scrubbed attempts. while it rose 46km above the gulf after five minutes of flight the rocket landed in the atlantic ocean to be retrieved by the company. well, this was the scene n inside mission control with engineers cheering and congratulating each other as the rocket took off. much more on the breaking news from the middle east ahead. we will get the latest in jerusalem as hamas calls for a uprising against israel and the idf declares a state of war alert . welcome back to all of our viewers around the world. you are watching cnn news room. breaking news, israeli military declaring a state of war alert and mobilizing the forces. unprecedented attack against israel has been unfolding over the past couple of hours. beginning with wave after wave of rockets fired from gaza. starting at about 6:30 a.m. local time this morning when most israelis were asleep. israeli officials say there were multiple injuries, some serious and at least one fatality. and they are warning israelis living near gaza are being warned to stay close to their shelters. i want to go back now to cnn reporter joining us live from jerusalem, what is the situation right now. >> reporter: well, over just the past few hours it is a nonstop sirens going off across israel. rockets including those towards jerusalem. we had four air raid sirens going off. if it happens while we are live on air we will take you with us. we have heard several explosions over head, i just heard another one. it could mean impacts t is an unprecedented intense situation. this is war. this is something that israel has not seen in ages, sort of coordinated surprise attack. it started at 6:30 in the morning with rockets being fired from gaza, towards israel and then something unheard of, infiltration. the military confirms the palestinian militants is in the community surrounding the gaza strip. we have seen alarming videos of them in backs of pick up trucks fires on people. a woman killed in her 60s, several others injured. there are reports of other fatalities and other injuries and it is not clear if those are from rockets from shrapnel or militants firing them. it seems as though it is continuing as we speak. we are seeing live images from israeli media from communities in southern israel where you are seeing a live security response to the militants going e essentially house to house, car by car to extract them out of the communities. they have been advised to stay in their bomb shelters but to completely lock their doors, israelis have been advised to stay near their protected spaces, sirens have been going off from tel aviv to the south and jerusalem including by the airport. as far as we understand the airport is still open. but, it is, it is a question if it will stay open depending on how the rockets continue. now, the israeli military declared a state of war alert. the defense minister has approved calling up extensive recruitment of reserves, they say. they are staying the hamas organization is responsible for this and they will face the consequences, they say, as well. hamas is calling it the al aqsa storm. it was planned to start at 6:30 this morning. the hamas organization claims they fired more than 5,000 rockets since this morning. we don't have a number from the israeli military yet but we know it has to be quite a bit because of the number of the sirens going off all morning long. i have an app on the phone telling me when the sirens are going off across the country, vibrating my phone nonstop. does not stop the number of sirens going off across the country and the combination of the rocket attacks combined with the infiltration, combined with the surprise attack. this is something that they have not seen in decades. >> unprecedented. reporting from jerusalem, thank you very much. and, we can go now to a reporter covering palestinian affairs. unprecedented events that we see unfold now for the last couple of hours. what could be the objective of this operation? >> i can only estimate, of course, i am covering the palestinian. for years i have been covering the hamas leadership. i can only assume the aim of this war, i would call it, maybe operation, it is not an operation anymore, declaration of war. the aim was to take some hostages, to kidnap israeli citizens and soldiers in order to do some kind of an agreement with israel in the future to release hundreds if not thousands of palestinian prisoner ins from israeli jails. this is usually what hamas has in mind in these kinds of operations. we see, we know already they managed to kidnap some israelis. i am not sure if they were soldiers or civilians. in the out skirts of the gaza strip inside of the towns and villages, but they did manage to do it. we saw terrible pictures of the massacres that took place in the towns and villages. we are talking about tens of casualties on the israeli side. in a surprise attack that there is no other definition than to call it a declaration of war. and, i am really sorry to say but in the next few weeks we will probably see the outcome of this, meaning the retaliation from the israeli side. there will be many casualties on palestinian side in gaza. i can only say how sorry i am for what hamas decided to do on behalf of all of the residents. >> i just want to make sure i understood you correctly. are you saying the men that infiltrated have taken hostages? >> according to what i know, yes, i did. not sure if they were alive or dead but we know they managed to take hostages into the gaza strip, yes. >> we understand that hamas is leading these concerted attacks, are there any other groups involved? >> reporter: right now it is under hamas leadership. shortly after the war started, meaning around 1 1/2 hours ago, the war live declaration of commander and chief or the chief of staff of hamas, he made a declaration in the media outlets saying that he calls it -- he named the operation and he said that this was a response for the attack, israeli attacks so called on a mosque and he swore that this operation will continue. no doubt that hamas took leadership and now leading the effort. they said they are part of this operation. but everything that we have seen, this is a very planned operation that managed to surprise the israeli intelligence. very reminding of six years 1973 when they surprised the israeli army. that was 50 years ago. the same now, hamas, holy day vacation, everyone here on vacation in israel. and in the first hours of mourning when everybody are going to the synagogues or resting in their houses this is when they pulled this operation. >> final thought from you, if it is confirmed these men that infiltrated israel have managed to take hostages how does that change their response for retaliating. >> i don't doubt it will be hard. we already know about recruiting all of the reserves, all israeli reserves to service, meaning we are going to see this country go into a war and getting into gaza. this will not be like a small scale bomb here or there from the air force or whatever. we are going to see a war on gaza, inside gaza, and again, with many, many casualties on both sides. >> thank you for joining us. >> thank you. we will be right back . israeli military is calling a state of alert and organizing its military forces. wave after wave of rockets fired from gaza, starting at about 6:30 this morning local time when most israelis were asleep. israeli officials say there are multiple injuries, some of them serious and at least one fatality. the israeli military is warning that a number of militants have infiltrated israeli territory from gaza. israelis living near gaza are being warned to stay close to their shelters. authorities in southern mexico are investigating what caused a bus, carrying migrants, to crash. it overturned on the curve of a mountainous road on friday killing 16 people and injuring at least 27 others. the officials say women and children are among the dead and that all of the victims are from venezuela and haiti. thousands of migrants from those countries have been traveling northward in recent months fleeing insecurity and economic crisis at home. the union government is said to provide more than $5 million to help victims of the flash floods that devastated a northeastern region this week. the money is earmarked for relief efforts and to rebuild damaged infrastructure. the floods killed 26 people and more than 140 people are missing. the government is advising all tourists to postpone travel to the area. the indian army says they can account for half of the 3,000 tourists who were stranded in the region on thursday because of the flash floods. people stranded for three days have been rescued.
