justin, police are contradicting vivek ramaswamy and his campaign after an incident involving protesters in his car. in iowa today, vivek ramaswamy clint protesters rammed into his car at an event, but police now say that the driver accidentally backed into his car. that driver was not there to protest. and that is all for me. thanks for watching. laura coaches back and her hour starts now. >> that was a quick turnaround. i was just here. >> the most like you never left. >> i feel like it is the case. our earrings almost match. >> that is called alignment. a smooth handover is what we are doing right now. >> i love the hand it was very air traffic control. thank you so much. good evening, i am laura coates. can we talk about the news tonight for a second, because former president, donald trump is expected to endorse ohio congressman, jim jordan, to become the next speaker of the house. i want you to think about that for a second. it is an extremely important point and important position. think about the role of the speaker of the house. the speaker is the second in line to the presidency right after the vice president of the united states. and the duties, well, they include administering the oath of office to members, giving members permission to even speak on the house floor. counting and declaring all votes , appointing members to committees, sending bills to committees, signing bills and resolutions that pass in the house. it's a whole lot of responsibility, and today, congressman, jordan, has been prioritizing investigating what he believes to be a weapon eyes government. will that change in light of the other responsibilities? i don't want to get ahead of myself here, because there are obviously other republicans were vying for that gavel and even with the expected endorsement by a man, who is called the head of the republican party, there's actually no guarantee that jordan will get the job. well, there is a new report is not entirely clear he will about what the former president allegedly did with potentially get the required 218 votes, or really, if anyone on the bench sensitive information. for the republicans can get that number, at least for now. abc news and the "new york times" are reporting tonight a source tells the gop that months after leaving office, trump allegedly conference it is not even going discussed details about u.s. to be meeting until 6:00 p.m. nuclear submarines, with a member of his mar-a-lago club. on monday. the head of the candidates forum on tuesday. and then the election on wednesday. now, that is a pretty big turnaround from that conference an australian billionaire who allegedly went on to share that meeting to a vote. information with dozens of others, including foreign officials and also journalists. i mean, if you don't count the according to abc this fact that it will have been a information was reported to special counsel, jack smith, who is not part of the week in between ousting mccarthy and that new vote. indictment. part of the trump spokesperson so, what happens then? saying the former president did nothing wrong, and lasting what the can gets kicked down the they claim are illegal leaks. i road a little bit further. want to get to this now, with the former white house ethics. remember, it's not just the duties of the speaker of the house, remember all of the things the house itself is not national security analyst and doing right now. advisor of the state there is 8 for ukraine, there department. joe, the rule here is if i is funding the u.s. government, don't get your name perfect you the immigration crisis at our go first. so, here's the rule, this is borders, which we talked a lot about today, with the wall. the information we are talking the epidemic of gun violence that is killing thousands and about, you actually posted on x thousands of us every single year. about why this is so the climate crisis, wildfires, concerning. i want to read to the audience floods and storms. a little bit about this. as the former president trump and you say you hope top-secret is facing four criminal trials. clearance in the past and you never saw any of this info, and that trump giving this to a foreign national, even ally, is and then there is a report that, today, that the former a major breach. is this what president allegedly discussed they call actionable potentially sensitive information about the united states nuclear submarines, with who? intelligence, and what does that mean? a member of his mar-a-lago club. >> it is actionable intelligence. this is some of the most highly classified information we have. and did i mention that the i had top-secret codeword government is running out of money in about 40 days? clearance. you think this is uncharted i was covering weapons issues, like the house on services territory? well, you ain't seen nothing committee. i never knew exactly what the payload was for nuclear arms yet. just wait until the court dates and campaign events start filling up the calendar and you submarines. i don't know how close we can will have to squint really hard get to an enemy's sub before to distinguish between the detection, and the reason is court of law and a court of that you want the enemy to have maximum uncertainty. public opinion. you don't want them to know exactly what your capabilities now, people will tell you this is just politics as usual, kid. are you want the enemy to be but doesn't this feel different? deterred from acting. so, they fear the uncertainty is normal in the rearview of what you might do. mirror officially? if i had done this, i would be and this republic, how do we in jail right now. keep it? if norm had done this there i want to dig into all of this would be fbi agents breaking right now with michael eric down his door. dyson. he is the distinguished presser he would be in handcuffs and we might not see him for a very long time. there should be one rule for professor of african-american studies at vanderbilt university and also the co- all. author of unequal, a story of america. michael i am so glad you are even at a party to a here tonight. we think about this step back billionaire pal, the most closely held secrets of the and what all this means in the united states. >> and i would imagine this information is quite evergreen, in the sense that it is not going to change month to month, news tonight that trump is now week to week. expected to endorse jim jordan as speaker, and that he has so the fact he's showing it at been in congress and the public any time, it could still eye for nearly 20 years, but actually be accurate. what would that do to the country in your mind? >> it could still be accurate, actually. and so for example, if we have >> it is great to see you, laura, being a grand marshal at two submarines in the theater right now, they could be alma mater here at cnn. having, they could be carrying between 80 warheads or 320 i think it represents, again, the extension of a neofascist warheads. you don't want china to know uprising in american culture, exactly how many. where, if you are dissatisfied with the speaker of the house and you are matt gates facing yourself in the past at least seriously allegations of you don't want them to be able to plot their moves based on serious harm, then you are able what they think the united states is capable of doing. to pull down this man with all >> and to be clear we don't of the power that you can know if the information that was actually described are shown allegedly is accurate, whether trump -related what he knew or anything at all. muster and send the culture and there's a lot of speculation chaos. and i think that jim jordan is and that. but legally speaking, if what an extension of that same he has shared at all, the fact trajectory that same kind of right-wing politics that has that he shared it, are there not been good for the country. legal implications? there are many conservatives >> there are profound legal who would do well in the station, because they love the implications and the reason is country, jim jordan doesn't appear to be cut from that mold. if it is true that he had this >> well, there are many who conversation and there seems to be a lot of corroboration, there has been reporting abc news, the times, cnn has its own reporting on this now. find him to be very polarizing, others who perhaps might support him. but let's break down those and it shows that risk profile issues one at a time, because you mentioned a handful of republican rebels brought the people's work on capitol hill of these documents that donald to a shuddering halt. some say they had a non- vendetta related reason, others trump, the many documents are saying this might be the tyranny of the minority. containing national security how do you see it? >> yeah, it is definitely a vendetta, driven by the tyranny secrets, alleged by the of the minority. government, innocent until when you allow emotionally driven politics to determine proven guilty, what other the future of america we are in information did he share if you bad shape, as you already illuminated and reiterated. would be so cavalier with something that could upset america's nuclear deterrence? who knows who does a legend democracy is best when it has a dozens of people who were told healthy discord, a kind of conflict that is based upon by mr. pratt, who knows who serious intellectual and they passed it on to? what else happened? political differences, not the kind of personal hatreds that it shows the danger of him have so clouded the american possessing these documents. mainstream that bigotry seems now, he is not charged-- >> is not charged. >> is not charged with it but to be normal and deliberation it is possible that the seems to be out the door. government will break in that >> you know, it is interesting, because it is not the first time in history we've had divisive rhetoric or politics or very personal attacks, but trial. our system itself was designed there's trouble reporting and that the prosecutors have inquired that they have accumulated information, they have asked questions. there's a lot of different ways it can come in and trial and it from the start to make change slowly, so we cannot make rash really speaks to why these are decisions to change the entire such serious crimes, because structure of government, but i this information can be wonder in these times we are dangerous and deadly to all in, is it too slow to keep americans that are allies. pace? >> yeah, well, depending on what side you are on you think it is too much or too little, >> so, coming in is not too fast, too quick or too slow. indicted, but with a prior bad that is why moderation has been the ringing endorsement of a act or mio or a pattern of someway is one way to get it great sense of democracy that, in. but that is the court of law. yeah, if we go too fast we will how about the court of get there, but we will be in a diplomacy? if you will? because as these reports come ditch and if we go slow we will out, the revelations, true or not, if we are reading about it wait for the revolution to keep going and we will miss it. or hearing about it, our allies the question is are we able to are certainly hearing something about it. perhaps our geopolitical summon the best angels of our enemies are also hearing about nature to moderate either it. extreme and find ourselves in a does this disrupt our position to where we reflect diplomatic efforts, just the not only the will of the revelation of the possibility? people, but the best thing for >> absolutely. the nation and its healthy if this is something that, trump would tell an acquaintance democracy. for no monetary gain, just sort >> i have to hear this phrase, why can't you get the best of throw it out at a party at person for the bob job or politician? it's because the best person mar-a-lago, what else is he doesn't want that job, who knows doing with some of the other information, is he actually trying to monetize some of it? what is he telling saudi . but this week alone, trump is arabia? using, well, increasingly what is he telling israel, what violent rhetoric, calling for is he telling the russians executing, i mean executing shoplifters, to saying that about this? that is the danger of all of migrants poison the country's blood. this. once you open up this can, well, listen. there is really no end. >> we will immediately stop all as a former ambassador i dealt of the pillaging and theft, every day with representatives very simply. of foreign governments and if you rob a store, you can fully expect to be shot as you right now the story is circling are leaving that store. shot. around the globe and people are saying, hey, this guy is the leading candidate of one of the >> we will stand up to crazy, two major political parties, he nancy pelosi, who ruined san is in national polls, in very francisco. house her husband doing, by the way? nobody has ever seen anything close proximity to his opponent . is this kind of a person who like we are witnessing right now, it is a very sad thing for would tamper or risk the our country. it is poisoning the blood of security of the united states our country, it is so bad, and and citizens of our allies? people are coming in, with can he be trusted, what does it disease, people are coming in with every possible thing that you can have. >> this is a disgrace. mean for the u.s. alliance, and that is why this court case and you have to go after this proceeding on time is so attorney general. important to have the rule of >> we use the word executed, he is using the word shot. law say, hey, there's consequences when you do this even if you are a former but you would think that a president. former president saying these things would really be at the >> don't forget, we call it the top of every news broadcast. it would be everywhere, but president, but he is also the they are not. commander-in-chief, so the is it because we have become implications are really important here as well. numb to this? >> we have become numb and joe cirincione, thanks for desensitized, because is the being here. viola fletcher survived the former president willing to subject himself to the same massacre two years ago and she penalty should he be found guilty of some of the pillaging is still fighting this day for and plundering and thievery about which he, you know has reparations. been accused? weather from his former university or lying about, you will the oldest living survivor know, his money so he can hide see the justice that she wants them and so on? he has committed allegedly now before the oklahoma supreme court? egregious crimes? her lawyer joins me next. is he willing to be subjected to the same measure? this is about the politics of purity and ideology and the hateful stand that trump has unleashed in america and unfortunately and tragically, too too many people have tried to follow suit. >> he would be part of that on rhetoric. you often hear this phrase, we are better than this and this is and how it is supposed to work in america, this is not us, this is not america. americans elected these leaders, he is the presumptive head of the republican party, a major party in the two party system. is this who we are becoming? >> i mean if we look back at frederick douglass, or abraham lincoln, or, or look, any other observer of america, yeah, who america is is a choice. so, when we say this is not america or this is america, that is because we make a choice to be one or the other. this is an american experiment, a grand experiment in democracy. it is not yet settled, it will never be. it is an ongoing evolution of great possibility and dangerous demonizing instincts. the choices before us, and if we choose people who perpetuate a legacy of hatefulness and bigotry this is indeed who we are. as a nation. >> well, democracy says america, the choice by two voices. michael douglas, pleasure to talk to tonight. >> well, they say seeing is believing, but what about cameras in the courtroom for donald trump's election subversion trial? will it further divide us? have people already made up their mind. it is a's attorney general, keith ellison is to this here to discuss, next. a 109-year-old, miss viola fletcher was just seven, when she witnessed one of the most significant acts of racial violence in american history. it was 1921 and a white mob rampaged through tulsa's greenwood district. also known as blackwell street. now, all of this over false accusations of a 19-year-old black teen assaulting a white 16-year-old girl. the rampage would later be known as the tulsa race massacre. explosives were tossed from airplanes, people being shot dead and more than a 1000 black homes and businesses reduced to ashes. at the time there were at least 36 people killed, but many historians today think that number is up to about 300 people who may have been murdered in the brutal attacks. for decades, viola fletcher never publicly spoke about what she had witnessed with anyone, fearful that she might be attacked for speaking out. then, in may of 2020, she was tracked down by solomon simmons, who convinced her to join a civil lawsuit, demanding reparations for her and the last two remaining known survivors of the destruction. now, the century long fight is with the oklahoma supreme court joining me now to discuss is simmons, a national civil rights attorney. mario, thank you so much for being here with us. we have talked about what has taken place before, because she has been waiting nearly her entire life for justice. does she believe that you will actually see it in her lifetime? >> yeah, laura, thank you for tonight, more than a dozen having me on, so good to see major media organizations are you. yes, she believes it. asking the judge who oversees donald trump's federal election we were at the oklahoma state subversion case, from mission capitol today. and we were there with an to broadcast the trial. this is a historic case, and entrance study with state lawmakers, talking about this very issue. you know, we have occasional there is an exception to a very the supreme court, we are strict rule which prohibits fighting on all fronts. cameras in courtrooms. and we went there to the state they asked the judge for capitol today and she was there at 109 years old, for 4 hours permission to record and also telecasting march 2024 trial. with us we talked about state i want to talk all about this now with attorney general, lawmakers and about the need keith ellison, author of break for reparations move forward. you know, 20 years ago, 22 the wheel, ending the cycle of years ago, the oklahoma state legislature published a report police violence. he has argued against cameras about the time, and they in the past for the minneapolis police officer, derek chauvin's trial, but he has since changed specifically said that there should be reparations, cash his mind. payments paid to viola we know, of course, that was televised. thank you so much for being fletcher, so she's showing up saying i am one of the three leading survivors, and 109 years old, i am in the courts, i am fighting the legislator calls. why don't you do the right thing and give us reparations, here, i am glad i have a chance give them to our community. to speak with you about this. so, yes, she believes with all people might not have realized of her heart. after seeing that actual trial >> at 109 years old, none of us televised, you do not want to had the excuse as to why we do that, why? >> that is right, i did not want to have the case cannot speak truth to and about televised, because i feared that vulnerable witnesses might not be forthcoming if they knew power. it is an interesting topic, that they were going to be because reparations, as you know, can be very polarizing. having their image broadcast most of the time it is talked around the world. about in the context of i was concerned about that, you slavery. people will say that it is too know, the folks who have to be tenuous a connection, between descendents of slaves and those who are here now of course, on that fateful corner on the even far removed. but she is a survivor and 25th, 2020, they didn't witnessed what happened. it is a much more direct line, volunteer to be in the media limelight but they just happened to be on that corner, does that make a difference? and i was nervous that they >> it makes a huge difference, would not come forward. and that's why i've been saying but i learned that it was forever, the last 20 years i've been in this fight, and tulsa overwhelmingly positive. i is the linchpin to reparations learned that the judge was right of the american people, and in tulsa, you have hundreds of pictures, you have video, you to order that the case be showed some of that coming into this segment. televised. we have hundreds of insurance he did it because of covid, because we really didn't have a plans, and we have living gallery, because of covid survivors who can tell you exactly what happened. spacing restrictions, but it ended up being the right thing. fletcher was seven years old at >> and you mentioned also one the time of the massacre, so, of the people who was so it makes a huge difference. important to this case, the person actually on the cell i always say, if we can win and phone was really a young girl, also then we can win anywhere. a young woman at the time. but we must win in tulsa so we concerns about that as well, a can win anywhere. and what we start with, laura, minor. but some people might look at i always start with, is it over. this and say, well, the reason not to have it is because of the construction, is it old, $200 million in property damage is something owned. the person who is actually the defendant in this case. i mean, trump's trial is not the derek chauvin trial. the nature of the offenses are you talk about 300 people. what we do know is that over 3000 people were disappeared because of the massacre, may extraordinarily different. your aware of the potential, 30th, 1921, they were in tulsa, accounted for and on june 1st how do you deal with the fact 1921, we never heard from them again. that it is the former president where they killed? of the united states, donald were they murdered? were they thrown in a mass trump specifically, how do you grave? factor in whether there should we would never know that to this day. but we do know that something be cameras in that courtroom? >> yes, i think because of this is owed. we do know that tulsa fact you mentioned those facts is the linchpin for our work in favor of cameras in the reparations throughout this country. and reparations is not a revolutionary concept. courtroom, and telecasting that we do it every single day in trial, because look, there are our justice system. many people, literally if you are hit from behind, we millions, who might believe that he is innocent and there are some who think he is guilty. pay for your car. let's look at the evidence. let's let everybody see the evidence, so that we can squash rumor and suspicion and fire we pay for your lost wages, that's reparations, we pay for your pain-and-suffering, that's reparations, and we pay for your medical bills. that's reparations, because we out interpretation. let's just have it for all the understand. they can be whole, they can get world to see so that if trump wants to testify he can do better and be a productive member of society. that. but i think that the country will accept the verdict, whatever it is, if he-- if this >> and even knowing that, the concept of making someone trial is televised on the world whole, the concept of can see. reparations, maybe it is the i mean, people think things are freezing, maybe it is how it being done unfairly, they will has been described or misunderstood, it is not very see it. and if they think the trial is popular. a washington post poll shows 70% of americans believe the conducted in a professional, government should not, should fair manner, they will see that not pay black americans whose ancestors were enslaved and too. >> that is an important point, because i've been thinking they do not believe a black about this a lot. americans should be paid at all, but there is a distinction here, the idea of slavery is there's all this pulling out perhaps one of the reasons. there, in fact there's a gallup but perhaps there is this poll showing that public notion of this issue of a confidence in institutions is living witness and victim to a very low, 45% of americans who crime. have very little or no confidence in the criminal justice system. 50% for television news and the to the legislative branch in oklahoma and tulsa, do they see it that way? >> we hope so. idea that the combination of we had a very positive meeting. these two things in particular there's been 22 years since the would be very impactful. report came out. but you also have to wonder survivors and their descendents provide a scholarship. they about the fact that you got haven't done any of those donald trump, the former president, speaking about this things. two tiered justice system in but they provided a few scholarships. so, we think in the weaponization of the this moment that we have people government and so-called witchhunt and all of the statements he's making. having people see it in real time could give the opportunity who want to talk about this. we hope that our state legislatures do the right thing. for people to see it for we are hoping on the screen themselves. it doesn't mean he won't actually say things outside of court will give us the the courtroom, but what about opportunity to move forward the the fact that it will be broadcast during a campaign trial, and we are hoping that season as well? does the politics at play here good people around this country make an impression to you? will stand with us in greenwood, stand with viola and >> well, you can't take the politics out of american life. push everyone to get the it is just there. reparations we deserve. i mean, it is an inescapable thing. i think the only thing you can do is have some sunshine, have some sunshine on all of the >> brynn gingras seven, thank facts so people can really know you. i've actually taken my family to the greenwood district with for themselves what happens, so my own eyes. you will see the streetlight with different plaques there on they can make their own mind up about what the evidence is and how to weigh in. whether donald trump is being the ground, and it gives you treated fairly or not. just such clarity as to the campaign nature of this is overwhelming tragedy that took something you simply cannot place, and then there's the greenwood rising center as avoid unless you delay the trial beyond the point where, well. thank you so much for joining us tonight. you know, all of the election-- >> thank you so much, always good to see you. electoral patterns are >> you too, thank you. dispensed with. but then you've got the problem up next, remembering an nfl of stale evidence, of justice delayed, justice denied, and legend. tributes are pouring in tonight for the late great bob kiss, the fact that there is a a lot one of the most feared of things that can go wrong if linebackers in league history. you put this off. so i would say do it now, deal with the politics. and you should not be able to use an election to sort of avoid justice. and i think a public trial as part of the justice process. >> that is fascinating, especially given today, because trump has admitted a motion to have the entire case we are talking about right now dismissed. part of the reason he is doing so is because of the politics. i don't mean the election related aspects of that, he cited his acquittal and the trial obviously a political trial and mechanism, but the alleged crimes that are centered on, in this case, our things he did after he left office. so, what is this all about? is it a way of trying to hope that the public doesn't understand the nuance, or distinction? or just throwing something against the wall and hoping it sticks? >> i think it is the leader, let me tell you, presidential immunity is a thing. but it exists because when a president is discharging official actions, then there needs to be some protections, so that the president doesn't have to second-guess every single thing he does and worry about litigation. what could possibly be official about committing a criminal act ? in fact, the definition of a criminal act is that it is exceeding your official duties. it is outside of and contrary and against your official duties. so, i think this simply doesn't work. you cannot commit a crime in the courts of your official duties and then turn around and say protect me, because i was on the job doing official duties. crime is a crime, nobody is above the law. everybody has to face the law. >> attorney general, keith ellison. thank you very much. well, there is a new report sing the former president, trump, discussed the sensitive nuclear submarine information with a mar-a-lago member. the possible national security and legal applications are next. well, we have some sad news tonight, chicago bears hall of fame linebacker, butkus has died at the age of 80. he died peacefully in his california home according to his family. he was considered one of the best defensive players in nfl history. joining me now is rachel nichols on showtime. rachel, glad you are here, you are the perfect person to help us impact his legacy. people sometimes know him later in his career as a commentator, maybe some of the commercials about him. but his legacy was really significant. >> absolutely. look, he was an iconic football player. he played with a ferocity that is frankly not even allowed at that level of violence anymore. he was the anchor of the unit, and sports illustrated put him on the cover and said he is the most feared guy in football. he was famously quoted saying, when he hits you he doesn't want to just put you in the hospital, he wants to put you in the cemetery. but the thing that always struck me as he represented so much more to chicago. he was born there, he grew up there. he went to the university of illinois. so, for the bears fans in the stands he was one of them, and he epitomized to them who they wanted to be, right? he was strong, he was tough, and frankly he was something special for chicago at a time in the 60s and 70s, where the madman of new york and the flower children of california were kind of taking over american culture. >> i mean, he went in the first round, his whole career play with the chicago bears as well, so iconic. it remains so even after he retired, even actually still a common thing as a retired person as well. you know, one of the things that is really problematic to me. i admit that i am kind of a curmudgeon on this issue, that, as much as his legacy has been attack, tonight, when you are watching football, he might be mentioned fewer times than taylor swift tonight. and while i am a taylor swift fan, i have really been honing in on this focus and a part of it feels kind of ascended to me. people talking about now women will start to love football. you have got to be kidding me. >> the nfl already had plenty. and they have gotten more through taylor swift. last week they had a rise of 2 million active female viewers, but still, i have to say, for people who are upset about, sort of the balance of things, the nfl has brought this on themselves. they haven't just leaned into the taylor swift phenomenon, they have dived in and brought scuba equipment. i don't know if we have the social media accounts, what they were earlier in the week, but they were referring-- there you go. this is the nfl account for all 32 teams. it is not the kansas city chiefs account, right? and you have travis kelce jerseys going up 400%. today, the new york post came out with a more serious story, saying that the nfl, look, this is the nfl banner. that is it. so of course taylor swift is over. they are doing it to themselves, right? the new york post come up with a story today reporting that the nfl has pressured tv networks to give up commercial time for free during games to promote taylor swift's concert movie. so, there's a lot going on here, to the point that -- >> but why? what you think that is? >> because it is so lucrative. it may give you an example, right? the nfl has 28 million instagram followers. that's a lot. 28 million. taylor swift has 273 million followers on instagram. 273 two 28. they want to suck up as much of that is they can, and unfortunately in this case, it is overshadowing the passing of a legend. >> you know, there are 70 people who will be looking at this and thinking about those numbers and how it comes down to that and we have talked in the past about the nfl and how sometimes the commercial gain has overshadowed some of the more significant issues, even the players want to focus on. we seen this recently. >> 100%. and travis kelsey himself said this week, the nfl has been overdoing it. so we will have to see whether this sunday things get toned down. if she is in the stands again, how many times we see her in the last game they cut away to her about a dozen times. we can count on see if they do it any less this time around, because it is. it is overshadowing everything else in the game right now. and there has been a serious backlash among football fans and you are right, for women who love football and there were plenty of them, i'm one of them, no one needs to be man's point about what a football is, the idea of that, even for people who are coming to the game for taylor swift is insulting. >> thank you. i'm so glad you came on. i have been-- everyone knows i've been like really? really? really? really? and at this point in minnesota we are not thinking about that. >> we had opposing players who have come out, teams that are on the schedule the next three or four weeks saying we don't want her to come, we don't want her here. >> well, maybe that is a bridge too far, but rachel nichols, thank you so much as always for being here. >> and thank you all for everyone watching tonight, our coverage continues.
