Uaw president sean fain thanked the president for his inperson support and the president told picketers to stick with it. Listen. Tomorrow republican front runner donald trump is also going to be showing his support for those who are on strike. He is set to appear with autoworkers in detroit. Hell be skipping the second republican president ial debate while doing that, and we are covering the story from all sides. Brianna, this trip by President Biden marked his most overts did play of support for these autoworkers as the struk against these big three Auto Companies continue. The president was invited here by uaw president sean fain and appeared with him as they rallied with striking workers outside of a gm facility here in wayne county. The president talked about how he believes these workers deserve significant raises and other benefits and that it is time, in his belief, that the Auto Companies begin to share more with these workers. Take a listen. The fact of the matter is that you guys, uaw saved the Automobile Industry back in ton2008 and before. You made a lot of sacrifices and gave up a lot. The companies were in trouble and now theyre doing incredibly well, and guess what . You should be doing incredibly well, too. Yes, sir [ cheering ] stick with it because you deserve the significant raise you need and other benefits. Lets get back what we lost, okay . They have to step up for us. Now after those remark, the president also told reporters that he supports the uaws calls for a 40 increase. That is one of the demands that has been made in these negotiations with the big three Auto Companies and really marked a change in the president s public position. The white house had really refrained from commenting on the specific terms that are under negotiation in these talks. One thing that the white house has noted quite often is that they dont have any Legal Authority to be direct party to the negotiations and allowing things to play out between the uaw and the big three auto company, but with the president s visit here today he was trying to show his support to the striking workers at a time when hes trying to balance not just the need to improve workers conditions and also concerns about the economy as there are still concerns about what a longterm impact this kind of strike could have on the country. Notably, the white house saying that the president s visit isnt an endorsement of the workers position, but that sure sound like one. Sure does. Vanessa, you actually have some new details on the conversation between President Biden and uaw president sean fain. What are you learning . We are learning that during the ride from the airport to the gm facility in wayne county, uaw president sean fain and President Biden had a conversation and according to a source familiar with the conversation, it was a good conversation. They spoke about workers issues and they also spoke about a Just Transition to Electric Vehicles. Now i want to bring in larry wynn. He was not in the beast with the two president s and he was with biden in wayne county. You shared a fist bump with President Biden. You heard all of what he had to say. Your reaction . I am very glad to see that hes supportive of us in our fight. All were asking for is for a good contract and they cant even afford to purchase the vehicles that they build. When you were listening to the president he seemed to say that he supports all of the unions demands and do you think his support will make a difference in the negotiations . I think its a big help. We are fighting against greedy ceos and the public needs to see that, as well. Weve had a lot of good things come from this, actually. Were getting support from all over. And do you think the president s visit today will change the movement from stellantis . We know that the union has seen more movement from ford, less from gm and stellantis. Does this put the pressure on in any way . It very well should put the pressure them. Weve been out here for a minute and were not ready to give up in this fight. However, we know that President Biden was invited directly by the union. He was here in town today just a few hours ago. The negotiations continue, though, between the three automakers and the union. We know that the union has been more interested in what ford has put on the table and not as much from gm and stellantis, but these workers are going to be out here until a deal is reached. Boris . What is he planning to say especially considering its not a union shop as we heard vanessa detailing there . Yeah. It was really interesting to hear vanessa say that from a Union Members perspective. When i talk to trump members they believe there is a divide and they slammed the fact that he was coming saying he never helped him when he was in office and slamming his policies as well when he was president and the Rank And File members and some of this is about conservative issues as well. Thats what i talked to one adviser about here today. We do expect him to dive into the economy and how the economy was better when he was president , and i do want to note that Union Members and Labor Experts have pointed to the fact that Trumps Administration was inherently pro business and i am told by members of the uaw union. They will at event, and they stand stood with him about form are President Trump and there was a way to maneuver bidens policies, with the Electric Vehicles and essentially that autoworkers are not fopd these policies that will kill jobs here in detroit, and so that is what theyre trying to sell. The one thing i want to point out here is that trump won over voters in 2016 winning overworking class and Union Members in numbers they havent seen in years. He now has a past and administration and a record and whether or not he can do that again, that remains to be seen, brianna. A surprising victory for donald trump in michigan in 2016. I think both of these frontrunners going to michigan underscores not only the significance of michigan, but the significance of the middle class, working class vote. How are you seeing this play out . Yeah. There was a famous song in the 1930s Written Out Of A Coal Mining Strike in Ken Particulary called which side are you on. It became the rallying cry for unions during the depression. President biden tried to answer that today as unequivocally as weve ever seen an american president do by joining the picket line, and i think it will do him some good. The challenge he faces, though, boris as you suggested and earlier commentary suggested is that workers dont only decide who is on their side anymore by economic interests. They also make that decision based on Cultural Values and the fact that if you look at exit polls, mang noncollege whites won 3 5 of them in the 2022 election . The demeanor democrats did better with them speckly and even there, it was only about 50 50. Those Dee Rust Belt states of michigan, and going and you saw where at a time when cultural issues have pushed those same voters to the gop. By then did do session significantly than what clinton did in 2016. At the same time, wooe seeing some pretty decent economic indicators, but when you poll people and you ask them how is biden understan biden handling the economy . How are you feeling . Look at this approval number. How does that make things more difficult for him, ron in places like michigan . Look, there are two big headwinds that hes facing in 24, concerns about his age and frustration over inflation even if inflation is slowing down, it doesnt mean prices are going back down and there is a strong sense among americans that things are more, pensive and the necessity of daily life than they were when biden took office. On the other hand, michigan will be a really interesting test case, brianna, because the big three bills that bidens passed, the Semiconductor Bill and the Infrastructure Bill and above all the Inflation Reduction Act thats triggered over 500 billion in private investment in new plants and facilities since he took office and a boom in Construction Manufacturing and whil while a lot of that has gone south which is the concern that the uv transition to mack a second transition tord toward a lower wage, nonuven viantment. This would be a rell test case on whether the new jobs and biden can ameliorate any of that endemic concern about prices which is real. This is a continuation of Hunter Bidens aggressive civil strategy that began before he was indicted on criminal gun charges. Cnn legal analyst and former federal prosecutor Jennifer Rogers here with us. Okay, jennifer. Just first off, does hunter biden have a case here, do you think . Well, its hard to say at this point, brianna, because this is a civil case, not a criminal case so what happens is you make a colorable claim that some wrongful conduct happened and then you get to get discovery. You get to depose witnesses and ask for documents and ask questions of your opponent and only after that is done do parties make motions to dismiss based on the fact. So its a little early to tell. He certainly makes colorable allegations so if his discovery turns up facts to support those allegations then there is a case here. In this suit, hunter biden does not concede that the infamous laptop was his. Still, though, he alleges they accessed his data. How do you explain that to a jury . Yeah. So theyre trying to walk this fine line here. What he says is that its not so much the taking of something that belonged to him in the form of the tangible object, the laptop or the external hard drive and physical object. They took this object and dug into it and they took the data, thats what he alleges is the problem, financial data, personal data and personal information and thats what the law says you cant do, you cant have access to someones personal data. Trying to get around this notion that what he had, what belonged to him was abandoned. Whatever the object was was my right and my personal and private data, so thats the line theyre trying to draw here. Could he be deposed . Could hunt are biden be deposed . Obviously that would be something that could obviously dig into his privacy if he has a concern for that and could that hurt him . Well, he certainly can and certainly will be deposed here. I think whats happened is this. It would be one thing if not all of the information had come out in The Public Realm then hunter biden would have interest in not pursuing these potential legal cases of his, but at this point with everything out there and the embarrassing stuff already in The Public Eye i think he probably feels luke whats the harm . Theres nothing else that can come out factually that would be more embarrassing so i might as well push back and try to make my legal claims and turn the tide of Public Opinion as far as who is in the right and who is in the wrong here. With fewer than five days until a Government ShutdownHouse SpeakerKevin Mccarthy still cant get his members in line. Right now there is no funding deal in sight, but the senate could release its own bipartisan shortterm Spending Bill at any moment. If that happens, mccarthy faces a critical test. Could he work with democrats and potentially get fired by his gop hardline right or potentially wrangle them and risk the possibility of the government running out of money on Saturday Night . Cnns manu raju is live for us on capitol hill. Manu, where do things stand right now . Speaker mccarthy has very little room to maneuver. He still wants to pass a shortterm end . Ing bill to keep the government open with republican votes alone, but theres a problem. He does not have enough votes because the included provisions in there including Spending Cuts and Border Security provisions that simply will not get democratic support and those hard liners on the right want to go even deeper in terms of Spending Cuts and theyre not willing to go look with any short term bill at all and mccarthy does not have the votes if they were to go that route, but if they were to decide to moderate and cut a deal with democrats, that could push hem out of the leadership. That is a warning issued by several conservatives and one that the Speakers Team and his allies dont take lightly. When i asked the speaker moments ago about whether or not he has the votes and how he can reconcile these problems, he sidestepped that question and indicated he still wants to press ahead. Do you acknowledge that you have a math problem right now . You have more than four members of your own conference that will vote against any Stopgap Measure. Why continue to try to convince them to go along with you when they are saying theyre not going to go along with anything that you put on the table. The concern to me is there are people in the Republican Party that would take the position of President Biden against what the rest of the americans want. Hes saying that those hard liners are essentially aligning themselves with President Bidens position.
