Some big moves in that already huge search for the escaped killer in pennsylvania. Thats where we begin this morning. We just learned moments ago from state police that the escaped killer is on the move, and the search area is now expanding. They released new Security Cam Images of how he was spotted overnight. The photos are coming from an area of a vast Botanical Gardens, pushing the search area to move and forcing authorities also to close area schools as a result. Lets get over to cnns Danny Freeman there with the latest. We just were hearing from the Press Conference. Tell us what it means. Reporter this Press Conference just wrapped up with Pennsylvania State police and Chester County officials. What we have learned is, as you said, this manhunt has expanded. Initially over the weekend, we were told by Law Enforcement officials that it the bulk of the Search Operations were centered two miles south of the Chester County prison where that inmate broke out back on thursday. But then overnight, police learned that this man was actually captured on Trail Cameras outside of the number twomile Search Perimeter in Longwood Gardens. Its a popular Tourist Attraction in the area. Its more though than botanical ga gardens. Its 200 acres of beautiful, lush gardens, but there are open meadows and winding trails as well. It was a private camera on one of those trails that captured him twice. And this garden, this vast expansive garden, its only about five mile what is from the prison. Thats what state police are saying thats the positive m message that he has not gotten that far. They believe the pressure they have been putting on him throughout the course of the weekend and monday has been here. But we got new pictures from the Press Conference. Listen to what the Lieutenant Colonel said about this picture. Well talk about this on the back end. Early this morning, we were notified by security at Longwood Gardens that they had Trail Camera Photos taken on the property, which appear to be him. This area is south of the perimeter. Investigators examined the photos and can confirm it is him. They confirm he has not changed his appearance, but he obtained a backpack and a hooded sweatshirt. Reporter you can see the photos here really eerie. The Trail Camera Photos, you can see he appears to be shirtless carrying that backpack, still it seems wearing some of the those prisonissued pants. We got a few updates about what police believes he is thinking at this moment. They say they believe he is winging it. It doesnt appear he has any stored materials hes getting. And again, they are taking that as a positive sign that they are closing in on him. Brake but the challenge here is this whole area, theres a the lot of woods, creeks, cornfields. The challenge is theres a lot of places to hide as this Man Haundredth continues. Its key that they have this video. The pressure they are putting on him is working. Thank you so much. So the good news is things that were suspected and speculated on that he had a carefully planned escape and a network of associates on the outside and could be making his way to the border and support in cache and cars is not true. The bad news is he did manage to get out of the perimeter that was their main search area, but thats allowed them to shift to where they know he was just hours ago. And he doesnt have much going for him. You can tell hes managed to pickett up some clothes, a backpack, some items he found loose or was able to steal in a structure or a car. But hes not set up to last long. He got out of the first perimeter. And the the police werent brushing over that, but i dont think they emphasized that. He was able to slip through the perimeter they fist set. And he has a backpack. Does that indicate hes been able to get inside a house or car . Its a strong suggestion he either got into a car or a house somewhere where someone doesnt know he took things because its not a reported theft. It was a holiday weekend. And that can be a suburban area or a rural area, depending on what block or perimeter youre in there. They closed some area sc schools. I would have to imagine that would be alarm figure i knew my child informs a school and they felt it wasnt safe enough. What does that tell you . They know that he has no upside to not be a desperate criminal. If hes caught, he was going away for life. He was sentenced for a murder where a knife was used 38 times on his girlfriend. And police are worried about a Con Frontation or him running into a residence or school. So this is in abundance of caution. And probably largely on the part of the public saying until hes caught, do i want my children walking back and forth to school. I have to let you go, but let me put this in a fine point. Does this feel like the end moments of this search . They changed the perimeter, they have this video thats not very old. Does this indicate they are close to taking him into custody . You need to compare it to apples to apples. The hunt in july lasted the same length of time. I think he got out on july 6th and was captured on the 15th. And he was a guy with military training, survival skills, preset up caches in the woods. He doesnt is those chings. Also this morning, a cnn exclusive, a trial date has been set for the federal election case against donald trump, but that doesnt not mean the investigation is over. In fact, cnn has learned it maybe growing. A grand jury is meeting and the team led by Special Counsel jack smith has been focused on the activities were now learning of former trump lawyer and current codefendant in georgia Sidney Powell. Sources say that smith specifically wants to know how funds, how money raised off baseless fraud claims were used to pay for alleged attempts to breach Voting Systems in several states that joe biden won. Paula reid has more details on this exclusive for us. Shes joining us now. Tell us more. When the January 6th Indictment was filed, there was some surprise that only former President Trump was charged. And it appears that this case was tailored with the hope they could bring it to trial before the 2024 election. But it included these specific descriptions of six codefendants, and the question thats loomed over this case for the past month has been will any those people will charged. Thats what zach cohen and i sought to uncover in this reporting. S and we learned Special Counsel investigators have been speaking to witnesses and have been asking about the coconspirators, they have been asking a lot of questions about zSidney Powell. Shes the attorney who is involved in pushing some of these claims of fraud and we have learned they have asked a lot of questions, starting with whether powell was able to present any evidence in the claims of fraud. Were told the witnesses told investigators absolutely not. But then they were also interested in how these claims of Election Fraud were used to fundraise. They are specifically interested in powells nonprofit defending the republic. Because we know throughout the investigation, theres been a lot of questions about whether these lies were used to then fundraise. They could be charged as fraud. We also know that this nonprofit used money to breach Voting Systems in four states that now President Biden won. So its unclear powell or anyone else will be charged, but it shows the Special Counsel is still hard at work and even though our initial impression was that perhaps wed see this narrow case that the federal level and then this more broad case in it georgia, but according to this reporting, investigator are still hard at work gathering evidence. Its possible that additional charges could be coming. Thats great reporting. Thank you. Joining me for more is defense attorney caroline police. So lets start with this reporting that its not only is the federal election investigation continuing, but now were learning its focusing on this money raised and money used to try to reach those votes systems. On its face, what does it tell you . It tells you that contrary to popular belief, jack smith is continuing to work this case, work his sources. It happens quite frequently that prosecutors supersede indictments. The theory went jack smith is tailoring this initial indictment so he can move to trial quickly, trying only one defendant in this case, hopefully to get if it in before the election. This happens all the time. Hesen continuing to beef up the case and we might see more indictments come down. The charges that we know of right now against donald trump and the federal Election Probe, they are based on three criminal statutes. Conspireing to fraud the government, Disenfrance Chiez voters and obstructing a proceedings. You add in this inquiry that sounds like it is expanding, how does it fit into the bigger Criminal Investigation . Those sound like fraud charges, wire fraud, things of that nature. I think Sidney Powell is fwoung to be front and center on this. You can read about that in the georgia case. Lets talk about another codefendant focusing in on the georgia case. The codefendant mark meadows is waiting for a final decision here. Last week in court, he tried to make his case to convince a judge that as Trumps White House achieve of staff, anything he was involved in be it illegal or not, was part of his official government duties. Really interesting legal questions here. Meadows position, had he took the stand which was a bit of a gamble to make this case for removal, i will note its a lower bar for removal than just the overall defense of immunity. Essentially what hes saying, he admit ted that these were political acts, which may come back to haunt him. Fani willis is arguing that that type of behavior is actually barred under the hatch act, and therefore, this Political Behavior could not have been in his official capacity. Thats the standard. Whether or not the actions he took were in furtherance of his official capacity as chief of staff. This decision with regard to mark meadows means more than just the future of mark meadows case. The way its been seen, you have 19 codefendants in georgia, including donald trump, and this decision if you move it into Federal Court could impact all of them. Does that fact weigh on the judge in making this call . Absolutely. Its still an open question if it he win this is case, whether all 19 will be kicked into Federal Court. We have seen other defendants move to sever their cases. Some defendants invoking their speedy trial rights. They are set to go to trial at the state level. So theres a lot of open questions in the air. I dont know we will see this getting to trial any time soon. Lets get a blast from the past. Related but related, peter navorro, hes a trial starting today on being in contempt of congress. This is for Stone Walling The January 6th Committee that has since disbanded. Now that a judge has made the statement essentially that his claims of Executive Privilege dont hold up here, what defense does he have now . This really has stymied any potential defense that navorro has. Its similar remembering back to steve bannon was indicted on similar counts for defying these select Committee Subpoenas and deposition dates. And he really nooz defenses. Its going to be a lightning fast trial. He has already previewed this will be an issue on appeal. The scope of Executive Privilege, testimonial immunity. The judge had a viral quote in his ruling that navorros evidence put forth was weak sauce. And that he was barring basically saying this is an issue of law that im going to decide in my gate keeping capacity, not an issue to put forth in front of the jurors, even to make that argument. So i think it is a thorny legal issue. Both sides have acknowledged that. Well see it go up on appeal. Steve bannons case is at the appeals level. And then you dont have to test at the end of five day, but if you do test at that point, you can come out of isolation without a mask. If you are still positive or havent tested, then you need to wear masks saydays six to ten. Thats the recommendations from the cdc. No testing sort of recommended at the end of five days, but if you do it, then you can come out of isolation completely. This off offers up an opportunity to everywhere in the country is experiencing now, which is another summer surge of covid. What are you hearing and learning about this recent surge and this new variant thats being launched . So i think theres clearly an uptick. I dont know we can even call it a surge, but the numbers have gone up. And we can compare this to this time last year, different points in the pandemic. The numbers have gone up in terms of hospital admissions. One thing i will tell you, its hard to get real numbers in terms of how much covid is out there, because theres not as much testing. A the lot of the testing that is happening is happening in peoples homes not being re reported. But take a look at the line graph. The far right of the screen, you saw a little uptick, but its about half or so of what it was at this time last year. So we kind of got to see where that goes over the next several months. We will expect it to go up, but compared to september of last year, compared to previous points, its thankfully still low. Another thing that we often look at it is how much covid is in the waste water. And we do know theres more covid in the waste water than there has been in several months now. Well, a new local law that is going into effect that says if you want to rent on the airbnb sites you have to register with the city of new york. This is what we are looking at and possibly 70 of the 23,000 active listings on airbnb gone starting today. Wow that is a lot. Significant. And this is what this new law says, if you want to be a shortterm renter, you have to register with the city, and if not, you can only rent for 30 days or more. And if you become a shortterm renter, according to the city, you have to be present in the apartment as you are renting to folks, and only two people in the Apartment Renting through airbnb, and this going to displace a lot of people who want to come to the city and experience the city and stay in the airbnb. And of course, airbnb is not happy with this at all, and they say in 2022, they made 85 million off of the rentals and many of them shortterm, and many of them shortterm in the city of new york. They say, okay, this is going into effect today and for the renters, if you have made a rental before today, and that rental is before december 1st, you are good, and you can stay in rental in new york city, but if the rental is scheduled after december 2nd, you will get a refund and you have to start all over again, and you will have to look again. If you are a host who did not receive that city i. D. Number, you can only rent for 30 days or more. That is an automatic on airbnb, and however a lot of the renters on airbnb have it set up to do a weekend stay while you are out of town. Now, here is the thing though, this policy is slow. A lot of the people, thousands of people have applied, and about 3,200 people have applied for the program to become a shortterm renter. According to the city only 260 applications have been approved. So that a very slow pace getting people into the shortterm rental programs, and this is going to impact the vrbo and others, because the reason that we are talking about airbnb is because they did sue the city, and the judge dismissed case. Why is the city doing this . It is about affordability. When you have a short term rental, you have the opportunity to take away from longterm renters, and so people who want to live in the city longterm cannot do that, because those apartments are off of the market. So, it is supply and demand. If you is greater supply of apartments for people who want to live here longer, price goes down on those apartments, and the city is saying that it is crackdown on making it more affordable to live here in new york.
