After days of being stuck in ankledeep mud, people at burning man could soon be headed home. Tens of thousands left stranded in the Nevada Desert after an inch of rain made it impossible to be able to get out. Right now, the road in and out of the annual Burning Man Festival is not ready for mass exodus of people, because it is still a muddy mess. Literally Tens Of Thousands of people, cars, campers are stuck and really needing to get out soon. They have been trapped for days after 0. 8 inches of rain fell in a matter of hours. Now, it might not seem like lot, but for that area, that is typically what falls in about two to three months. Each year, more than 70,000 people who call themselves burners, they descend upon the Nevada Desert, and this is a festival that thego goers wont soon forget. Camila bernal has the latest. Reporter we are waiting to hear from the officials here whether the shelter in place is going be lifted, but we are starting to see some people exiting the festival. They call the exit the exodus. So what you are seeing here is some of the rvs and the cars that are making their way out of the festival, and if that shelter in place is lifted. We could see thousands of people trying to get out. This is the main entrance and exit to the festival, and we are right at the playa with the road ends and begins. People are coming out and cheering and honking because of how happy they are that they have made it out. Many, many people that i have talked to over the last couple of days, they have told me that they walked for hours, and many of them saying that they had to wrap their shoes in plastic bags and use duct tape in order to make their walk out of there just a little bit easier. We talked to people who were stuck in their cars for hours. It has been a mess, and authorities warned people, and told them to essentially portion their food, water and fuel and to be extremely careful, because a lot of the people who come here prepare for the amount of days they plan on being here, and if you extend it by one or two days, you could run low on the food and supply, and the authorities have been telling people to be careful and to just continue to Pay Attention to an nounsmentes and the weather. I will point out that every Single Person that i have talked to has told me that they will remain positive and they have had a lot of fun and making best out of a difficult situation. This is a community that has come together, and they are helping each other with food and the water and everything that they need. But again, we are waiting for the organizers to see if the shelter in place is lifted as we continue to see more and more attendees coming out of the festival. Camila bernal, cnn, Black Rock City. But the rain came down in sheets and brought two to three months rain in a 24hour period, but the rain coming to an end, and with the live shot with camila, the sun came out, and it is going to change the clay into a harder surface, and the vehicles can exit safely and hoping to get the all clear to open it up. I love to see the positive attitude that the people have here in the playa, which you ski on space north of the empire of Black Rock City here, and 70,000 people descending there on an annual basis coinciding with the rainstorm with the dry months of august and september, but not this year, john. And we kept in, and well stocked until wednesday and thursday. Good to hear that the spirits are high. And what is the most difficult aspect of the weather and being trapped there . I would say the most difficult aspect fundamental to the problem that we have is the concept of the woop is someone who shows up nothing other than the rv and selfish indulgence and they offer nothing. Knotting to the community, and they are people who leave the city and leaving the trash and leave a crisis from which burning man might not survive. And i will say that i have been talking to people, and they have to leave to go to work, and all sorts of things, but what is the communication like with the organizers . So, burning man as their own radio station, and they have updates with the roads and the conditions, and in reality, it is to have star link here, and there is weather reports and the word spreads throughout the community. Lawmakers are returning to capitol hill with another potential Government Shutdown on the calendar. They have just a month to agree before another Government Shutdown could happen. There is a short term funding deal to happen for now according to speaker Kevin Mccarthy, but we are joined by melanie zanona, and starting with you, where do things stand as Congress Returns from recess . Well, congress is nowhere near completing their work on the long term bill, so a shortterm patch is needed, but rahel, even that is complicated. They have not decided what if anything is going to be attached to the shortterm funding bill. The white house has requested 40 billion for Disaster Relief and ukraine funding, but it is not yet clear if the republicans are going to be okay with linking two issues together, because the conservatives in the house want to see the disaster aid separated from the ukraine funding. That is one of the several demands that the conservatives are laying out in the funding fight. They also want to see the house start a biden impeachment inquiry, and boost the Border Security as part of the cr, the short term funding bill and parts of the Department Of Justice defunded, and all of the very unlikely to happen, but it is showing you the challenge that speaker Kevin Mccarthy is facing. I think that republican mike simpson who serves on one of the key Spending Panels summed it up perfectly. He told me that if he, as mccarthy, works with the democrats, they are obviously not going to do it for free, so it is a compromise and find a resolution introduced on the floor to vacate the chair which is a reference to a procedural tool to allow any Single Member to oust the speaker, and the conservatives have threatened it in the past and threatening to do it again if they dont get their way on the spending, and mccarthy is threatening that again, and he held a Conference Call with the republicans, and they told myself and my colleague manu raju to hold their power when the bigger fights come. But there is no indication of what will happen with that. And so, now, what is the mccarthy saying to play the long game, and get this done in the short term, and fight for the priorities in the long term, and is that enough to placate some of the hardliners . Well, i mean, that is what mccarthy is going to try to do, but he is very aware on the other hand, that there are red lines that democrats wont pass here, and that he really cant pass. You have to remember also that this is not, there is a split not only among mccarthys conference, but on republicans in general, because the Senate Republicans are interested in keeping the ukraine aid from any Spending Package and that pressure is going to play a major role in whatever deal comes about, too. And mccarthy has gotten out of straits like this before, but it is not an ideal situation for him. And melanie, let me bring you back into the conversation and remind us what is at stake here politically for Kevin Mccarthy if he is not able to thread this needle that he appears, that hell have to in order to get it done, but also keep the members of the party happy. Yeah, mccarthy is really stuck in the middle here. The choice right now is to either placate the conservatives but risk a Government Shutdown on his watch, which he does not want to happen, or he going to work with the democrats and the Senate Republicans who have looked at this aid, and risk ouster. And if the government shuts down they will also have to halt all of the investigations into the biden administration, and of course, the conservatives want to investigate and impeach biden and he has a way to dangle that in front of them, and keep them on board, but they are not buying it. And he want to incentivize the hardliners with the impeachment inquiry, and is that enough or effective . Well, probably, because you can see what the incentive is looking like here. On the one hand, you moving forward to some extent which is impeachment and investigation, and on the other hand Government Shutdown which have not helped the conservatives at all. And the shutdowns have shown approval plummeting. And so it is clear of the argument, but it is hard to see whether the conservatives are going to buy it. So much to watch in the weeks to come. He talked in front of a group of Union Leaders at a labor event in philadelphia and just as a new Wall Street Journal poll is out with a stark warning as he seeks reelection. In my opinion, john, and there a lot of different views on this is that you have to frame this up. You chalk the field. You have to be clear on donald trump. He has been indicted four times in four different jurisdictions, and if this guy was your kids schoolteacher, you would want him out, or in charge of your jurisdiction, you would want him out, but the contrast with trump from the economic standpoint and i was there, he cut taxes for wealthiest people in the country, and for his friend, and joe biden is bringing back manufacturing, and with joe biden we are Building Electronics and chips and i was at a Union Conference in West Virginia a few days ago, john, and the union halls, and we cant find union worker, and they are going so aggressively to get apprentices, because of the building to happen in the next ten year, and this is worth bragging about. Again, i was in congress for 20 years screaming at times about how we have to reindustrialize the country, and we have to make stuff again. I dont care how you feel about joe biden, the record is clear on what he has done and what the Democratic Congress has done. So do you want a guy who cut the taxes for his wealthy friends at maralago or do you want somebody who wants to bring back the manufacturing and build stuff in places like ohio, and the message is clear, and an energetic and Vigorous Campaign over the last three yearsplus, and the message is going to resonate and inflation is going to come down. The projects are coming on line, and with the campaign, there is a different view. You used the words energetic and vigorous, and a lot of the democrats are concerned with President Bidens age, and he made a joke about his age in philadelphia, and so it is not a Subject Unknown to him, and do you think that he shcapable of the energy, Vigorous Campaign that you are talking about . He is going to have to be. I mean, because he stands between the insurrectionists and the antidemocratic forces and us keeping america as we know it and love it and what kind of future do we want to have for our kids. So he has to meet the moment, and rise to the occasion, and again, you know, being out of congress now for a few month, john, people out here in places like ohio. They are not paying attention to every little detail of the political discussion going on in washington, d. C. , and they will start to cluing in for the last few months of the election next year and that is when we have to have the juice going, and the energy going, and a lot the projects coming online, and he has a lot to talk about and it has to be done in a very energetic way. You say that he has to be, and my question is if he is up to the task, and the answer is he has to be. What concerns do you have, if anything . Well, look, it is not like he is running against, you know, if it is donald trump, he is not going to be running against somebody whos fresh out of college. So like this is going to be, he is an elder statesman, and he has to be who he is, abnd he ha delivered. Everybody knows who has watched my campaign, i have been critical of the administration on different issue, but the reality is that he got the job done and he has to talk about that very clearly with a lot of energy. There is a lot of different ways to do that, but i think that we could be entering an exciting time in america if we can put this surrectionist moment to bed and building stuff and Building A Future for our kids, and as an elder statesman who has delivered and fighting the antidemocratic forces in ukraine and fighting them here at home, and bringing back manufacturing, and he is doing it in a way with a little bit of class and dignity unlike what we have seen so much from other side. There is a critical deal to allow grain to flow through the ports of the odesa region to other ports of the world. Concrete proposals to putin, and he said the needs of the russians have to be met first. That is what we heard from the Foreign Minister last week, and specifically, that putin wants to import more agricultural equipment, and some of the financial mechanisms to be eased for russia to get payment for the fertilizer and for the grain. Of course, these have been impositioned sanctions put on russia, because they chose to go to war in ukraine, and that is why putin is suffering the effects of the sanctions, but what he is saying in essence is that you want to get us back in deal, you have to ease off a little bit, and president erdogan seemed to reflect that a little bit. One of the comments in the Press Conference that erdogan and putin held after the meeting. Erdogan says that ukraine needs to soften the position if it wants to get on track with russia, and get the grain deal revived again. So really, putin today gets to grandstand, if you will on a bigger platform and put out his issues and his complaints, and the deal doesnt at this stage appear to be moving forward. Interesting though to see erdogan back in the role of being a little bit of the power broker of the two sides. We also learned that zelenskyy fired Defense Minister and why would he do that so i mean, a year and a half into the war, and why would he do that so far into the war . Well, what the ukrainians are saying is that the Defense Minister, the outgoing Defense Minister had requested himself that he wanted to step down. Look, i dont think that anyone is under any illusions about what has been going on in the ukrainian military. And zelenskyy has been firing a number of senior officials on the Recruitment Side and other areas where he perceives there has been corruption, and while no Corruption Allegations have been leveled at reznikov, clearly the buck stops with what happens in the Defense Ministry and those under him at his desk, and so he is asked to step aside. And the man that zelenskyy is putting in, Rus Tan Ramanov has been involved in the black sea deal, and the saudis to help get some prisoner released from the russian, and he has a Strong International profile and perhaps one of the strongest cards that he has to play is because he is from crimea, he has real moral authority when talking to allies and partners about the need to help ukraine get crimea back. That is something that he brings. But he is going to have to come into this with real energy and vigor, because the International Community is slowly beginning to potentially reconsider some of the aid or the amount of military aid they will give in the future to ukraine, and commitments made about the Security Pacts and that sort of thing, so there has to be real energy in Defense Ministry, and it appears that is what zelenskyy is hoping to get with the new hire. And the way that people are taking it on the chin is with the gas prices. The National Average for a gallon of gas for regular according to aaa is 3. 81 and not that far off from what we saw this time last year, and the prices are among the highest that we have seen all year long. He was very good at liberating other people. He was not good at liberating himself. Michael was inspirds by me, prince. James brown, i discovered him. Jimi hendrix was my guitar player. Everyone was beholden to him. And joining us now to discuss is jason king. He is the dean of the Thornton School of music at the university of Southern California and appears in the film. I talked to jason about the film yesterday. Nice to do this again. Jason, i want to pick up on something you told me yesterday that got my attention. You said he, Little Richard, is someone who in my opinion is one of the greatest and most dynamic figures of the entire 20th century, not just in music, but in culture. Talk to us a bit about some of his lasting cultural implications. Sure. Little richard is one of the innovators and inventors of Rock And Roll music, so Rock And Roll is not just music, but its also a style, an energy, that in some ways defiance nes the 20th cent. Tefs the architect, Framer Of Rock And Roll and did that by fusing together new orleans r b with gospel music in a style that had never been heard before. It displaced what was really popular in music at the time, which was jazz and swing tunes, and easy listening, and completely revolutionized the way people came together around music. Rock and roll had a huge effect in terms of desegregating america. Little richard being at the center of all of that, deserves way more credit for the work he did in terms of changing the dynamics of 20th century culture. Its interesting. You say he deserves way more credit. I love Me A Good Music documentary. Watch anything on the beatles, elvis, rolling stones, we saw mick jagger, david bowie, and they all will just gush about Little Richard. Who was your influence. Little richard, they say. How can it be that all the biggest stars in the history of planet earth point to him, yet hes still somehow under appreciated and not fully understood . I mean, i think the reasons are obvious. He is somebody who influenced almost everybody who came after him, but he was also a gay or queer black man from the deep south, a gender, nonconforming human being, at a time of incredibly repressed like this time of incredible repression and homophobia and conservatism. Theres lots of ways in which he wasnt given his due, because simply the time didnt allow for someone like Little Richard to be celebrated in the way we might now. His music was appropriated. He didnt get proper publishing royalties. He had terrible recording contracts. He fought for his rights for his entire career, and it really has taken a very long time for people to fully appreciate all that he brought to culture. Jason, lets stick with that a bit more. I want to toss to a clip of you in the documentary and then ask you on the other side of it. And the best new artist is me. I have never received nothing. Yall aint never gave me no grammy. Its endearing, its funny, but as a black man, watching that, i heard seething anger that underwrites what hes saying. And jason, i just wonder, in 2023, have we come far enough in terms of black artists getting their due, or do you think that there is still more work to be done . I think theres still more work to be done for sure. I think in a lot of ways, we have a different language than we had when Little Richard got his start in the 1950s. We have a language around cultural appropriation, we have a language around exploitation, especially racial exploitation. We didnt have that same kind of sophisticated language then. I think some of the dynamics in Popular Music still remain the same. Theres a lot of asymmetrical power relationships, certain people have and other people dont, some people own, other people dont, and so i think theres stale ways to go. Little richard fought for those rights for such a long time, and its really important to give him his due now so we can really claim, you know, all that he did and all that is still to come in pop music.
