>> remember, rick perry once upon a time was leading for a couple beaks. dr. ben carsing, we led for about 60, 90 days. this is part of the process. much very unique ideas, they excite the base, if you will. so i think it's exciting during the debate, but when i look at iowa, new hampshire, i don't see a clear path for ramaswamy, nor do i see voters moving to his corner. >> president to get your view on this. a lot of republicans like forward to his foreign policies really putin friendly. to be clear, he wants to cede territory in ukraine. he wants to end security assistance to ukraine, block ukraine's membership to nato, and ends sanctioning on russia. >> you know who else wants to do those? the front-runner of the republican primary, donald trump. in that way he's very much aligns himself. there's a moment when nikki went at it with the vivek, what he's saying is going to destroy democracy, and he has no foreign policy experience, and neither did donald trump. that certainly didn't help him. economic advancement, health care, those are issues very much aligned with the indian-american community and asian american commute at large with the voting population on the margins can make differences like georgia and north carolina. president trump has made inroads with asian americans. the right wing has made inroads with this community. this is pardon of why we saw a standardbearer against affirmative action. this is part of the movement of bringing the idea of entrepreneurship into the republican party fold. it's concerning to democrats, because traditionally the coalition of people of color has voted democrat. >> just to be clear, asian american, you're talking about indian, pakistan, not just china and other countries in that part. >> ben benji, i remember every presidential debate when there's a full field, you can usually say there's one person that everyone hail. john edwards was one of those. there was a period where mitt ro romney, and it changed. it's clearly vivek in this incarnation. 9 loathing you can feel so many of them have is almost palpable. >> and can tell we're at the debate strategically it makes sense to go after the person rising in the polls, but i think it goes deeper. for one thing, every person on stage is a current or former grorchor or longtime senator like tim scott. they take governing seriously. they do not like the idea of being lectured by some 38 years old who said they have a simple answer to everything, but there's an interesting thing. everyone has internalized the idea you can't attack trump, even people do clearly loathe hem are reluctant to do it, but you are allowed to attack vivek ramaswamy for saying a lot of the same things. i think you're seeing republicans say, okay, at least we can attack this guy. >> that seems to ring true. i here nikki haley attacking vivek ramaswamy for what donald trump has espoused. >> but he's not donald trump. after the first debate, his favorability has increased. i will say to vivek's credit, a poll came august 4th showing 55% of americans do not want congress to authorize additional funding for ukraine. it's not out of the main. >> it's not. vivek is tapping into something, and saying why are we sending $100 billion here and not addressing the issues at hope? i was just illustrating a point. access nfl sunday ticket on us, get a $400 reward card. okay... in our national lead, emotional pleas this week for help, for information, and very simply for the truth. these pleas comes from people who deserves everyone's respect and compassion, families who lost loved ones in the bombing in the abbey gate in the kabul airport in afghanistan. it happened roughly two years ago. you may remember, it killed 11 marines, a navy corpsman, and one soldier along with 170 afghans. several more were wounded, some of them grievously. it was the deadliest day for u.s. in afghanistan in a decade. service members were working to evacuate civilians and others at the airport. gold star families brought pointed questions to d.c. we wanted to try to help them get answers. >> two years have gone by, and where are we? to be frank, we're knee-deep in bullshit. >> reporter: an emotional hearing on capitol hill with testimony from families of the 13 members killed two years ago. there was understandable anger. >> i identify as a father, a husband, a pissed-offend patriot and now a gold star dad. >> i want to know why the current administration isn't able to take responsibility for their actions in the days and weeks and the months leading up to this fateful day. >> reporter: gold star families still desperately seeking answers about what happened to their loved ones on that day. >> our armed services questioned air support, multi-pal, multiple military personnel saying, this is not a good idea. our snipers asking for permission to engage, every one of them ignored. these are red flags. why were they ignored? >> reporter: some of the families pointing to previous testimony given by another marine who was on the same mission, marine sergeant tyler vargas andrews, who said he and other marines believed they saw a man who fit the description of a suicide bomber, but had been denied authority to engage. >> we asked if we could shoot, our batallion commander said, and i quote, we were ignored. no one was held accountable for our safety. >> reporter: a review the witness testimonies from a pentagon investigation reveals conflicting recollections, saying one that all were aware. another say occasionally marines were saying a guy looks suspicious. you would look at the guy and think, may. a third sail it's possible we saw him, but we don't have a solid description of who he was. >> reporter: marine tristan hirsch told his local newspaper, we knew about him two days prior to the attack. the cia let us know. he looked exactly as they described him. cnn could not get in touch with hirsch. cnn sought to get some answers this week. >> it's been testified that they spotted someone who said they matched the description, but were denied permission to engage the threat. do you know would why? >> it was a very challenging situation, military commanders on the ground made the best decisions and provided their best military advice based on what was known at the time. >> reporter: another looming question -- whether u.s. intelligence knew of an isis style cell was staging at a nearby isis-k later claimed responsibility for the attack. >> you're telling me couldn't have precision dropped on the isis-k members? this was all actionable intel that we sat on. nothing was done. why? >> reporter: a new book by one of the republican committee staffers, journalist jerry dunleavy notes in two different pentagon report, u.s. intelligence wanted to strike the hotel, but determined it was infeasible due to the negative response from the taliban. another report said it was asked, but the taliban never did. general mccontendsies denied these claims in september 2021. >> general mckenzie, is it instrument that u.s. forces had the isis-k cell under surveillance prior to august 26th and could have truck them before the deadly terrorist attacks, but were not given the authority to strike? >> no, that's not true. >> reporter: this week cnn followed up. >> they were denied to conduct an air strike. to your knowledge, is that true and why were they denied, if so? >> at the tactical level, the assessment was the abbey gate attack was not preventable without degrading the mission and the leaders on the ground followed proper measures and procedures. >> reporter: chairman of the joint chiefs of staff put out a statement, in part, we owe gold star families everything. we owe them transparency, honesty, accountability, we owe them the truth. >> they are sons and daughters, brothers and sisters that are pawns in some agenda, and we deserve some information and collaboration from all political parties. now, for the last couple days we've been reaching out to the biden administration for reaction and for a guest, anyone who would be willing to answer some of the questions we posted on this piece on camera. they declined, but minutes ago, a pentagon gave us an extensive statement. we will put it on cnn.com, but here's the bottom line on whether snipers could have taken out the suspected sniper. we did not have intelligence that identify a description of the bomber. the preponderance of the intelligence indicated a complex attack like a car bomb. the statement goes on to say, furthermore descriptions in the media included in this recently released book do not match the actual description of the bomber, so it's possible if a sniper had taken a shot on this individual, he very well could have been killing an innocent person. according to the rules of engagement any service members can use legal force if they determine there's a threat to themselves or coalition forces. unquote. on the second question we raised, about the air strike, the pentagon said, quote -- according to the commanders in kabul there were not any vetted strikes denied. we never had the precise intelligence. it is accurate we asked the taliban to raid or search areas. they had searched some, did not search others. we'll continue tots search for answers. alisha lopez, her son hunter lopez, is among the 13 service members killed in the bombing. first of all, thank for you joining us. tell bus your son. what do you want our viewers to know about him? >> thank you, first of all, i appreciate your time in telling our children's story. my son, as well as the other 12, are nothing short but heroes. they went out there and did their job and did their job, knowing that there was an imminent danger. they still continued to try to get as many people out of afghanistan as much as they could. >> the pentagon statement about these two questions that we raised, that were brought up in the hearing earlier this week, among gold star family, the statement seemed to suggest that there was not any actionable intelligence when 2 came to the suicide bomber in order for a sniper to take him out before the bombing, and there was not any intelligence that would have merited an air strike on the hotel so. that's their basic answer. i'm wondering what you think about that, and if you heard anything new in what the poke sent us today? >> this is the first i hear that the pentagon even responded, but -- >> i great with you, it just happened minutes ago. we'll put the whole same on, but they have never more directly addressed these two questions. >> yeah. well, if their statement that they released today is anything like the d.o.d. report we received at our homes, it's short of accurate information. they failed to speak with people that were there, important people like sergeant tyler vargas, who had his -- the bomber in his sights, and they did not speak with him. there were several marines that were injured that were not spoken to. so their statements that they release is short of incomplete and not correct, and it's been two years, and so i don't really believe them. >> you and your husband attended the roundtable that congressman mccall, the chairman of the house committee held last month, what answers were you looking for? and have you gotten any answers? >> sadly, we have not received any answers. we have requested true accountability and validation of the stonries that the marines that were junior and were there have told us. we have requested numerous times to have my son's property returned to us. that, again, has been ignored. they have nod gt given that to . just accurate statements of where my child was at the time of the bombing, where he took his last breath, all of that, we have no information on any of that. >> i want to play something your husband said during the august roundtable. >> we find ourselves reading sanitized letters from the white house on this anniversary of the tragic day, seemingly authored to appease gold star families, but with overall indifference to all the families and veterans who fought in afghanistan, and all who were injured during these two decades of war. >> it sounds like he feels the biden administration would rather forget about afghanistan and the pain caused by what happened during the withdrawal. >> absolutely. we -- we have requested numerous times to speak with somebody from the white house, the president, anybody that was there and that made the decisions that they made. however, none of them have responded to our invitation. again, we sit with reports that they came to our house and said that this was a true and accurate investigation of what happened, and it falls short from the actual truth. >> alisha lopez, thank you so much. may hunter's memory be a blessing. >> thank you so much. appreciate it. coming up, the controversial vote next week for the women's tennis situation which could put one of their major tennis tournament in a place where women are not exexactly respect, sasaudi arabia. type 2 diabetes? >> well, i think it all is about the money, jake. it's interesting how this all came about. this started when the wta championships were originally being played in china. of course, in 2020 the pandemic hit. what happened after that, you know, the wta made the moral decision not to go back to china because of the situation with the chinese player. so what's happened since, jake, is that the women's tour finals have gotten to various countries, even here in the u.s., in mexico. it's on the table now, one of the places it could go is saudi arabia. what i've justin told by a source very close to the decisionmaking process, that that is not going to happen this year. but it's still on the table for potential next year and in years down the road. the quick answer to the question is, of course, jake, it's always about the money. >> as you noted, we saw the wta in april walk back the stance against holding any tournaments in china. of course, they first took a moral stance, then they didn't -- here are images of p peng -- how did the individual players feel?
