breaking this morning, significant disclosures from are the supreme court justices clarence thomas and samuel alito and both of them reporting who paid for trips and lodgings and meals. we will break down the significance of the disclosures. also, a scary moment for senator mitch mcconnell, and the senate minority senator freezing for the second time in a week while taking questions. it is prompting more uncertainty for the 81-year-old's future. and in johannesburg overnight, a fire burns through a building full of families. we have the latest on the rescue and recovery efforts. i'm boris sanchez with rahel sol solomon, and we are in for john, kate and sara. you are watching cnn "news central." we begin with the break news from the supreme court. two of the high justices disclosing details of the trip they took. moments ago, samuel alito acknowledging a trip to rome paid for by a conservative group, and we have learned that justice thomas disclosing trips on a private jet and others brought to you by joan biskupic. >> sure, boris, these were forms due in may, and both of the justices got extensions to take more care in filing them, and they have just come in. the most important once, i think that are the items that clarence thomas has listed. two trips taken on the dime of harlan crow for speeches in dallas, texas, and then another trip taken to his resort in the adirondacks, which is an adult playground with the lavish amenities that clarence thomas has used for summers over the last couple of decades, and as had been earlier reported for prorepublica, but as we are seeing for first time, those trips are documented by justice thomas himself. those were both in 2022, and the reporting period that was covered by the new report, but he also came back in 2014, he is acknowledging a financial deal for real estate, a deal that harlan crow had made with his family for three properties in savannah, georgia. in all of the situations, i wanted to stress, boris, the context here. there is so much more scrutiny and the justices, and justifiable scrutiny on the justices, and perhaps wealthy ben factors influencing in cases that are under the law of the land that we live under, and also that they have no for mall bac backdrop. also today, we heard from a lawyer of clarence thomas saying that any mistakes that the justice had made were inadvertent. and another statement from elliott burke said that the attacks against justices are nothing but blood sport for the politics from the release. and so what he is talk about the justices being influenced by the big wealthy mega donors to republican and conservative causes at the time when the court is getting more conservative, and those are kinds of issues that are raised by the new filings today, boris. >> and joan, i wanted to ask about him talking about taking travel jet travel because of security concerns. >> that is the first time that we have heard, because he said that a trip that he took on the dime of harlan krou was about a week after the leak of the dobbs opinion, and that leak happened may 2nd, and the trip to dallas that is in question here was may 12th, and justice thomas said he had been encouraged an advised to take private travel when possible rather than commercial. now, i don't know if the other justices are doing that. i do know that he had many other times though, he had taken this travel from harlan crow. but it is raising the question of the justification from justice thomas's lawyer. >> and as you pointed out, there is no unified code of ethics, and something that chief justice roberts has tried to coordinate, but it is difficult to. >> okay. boris, thank you. this morning, senate minority leader mitch mcconnell is still trying to convince colleagues that he is fit for office as he appeared to freeze in office. >> running for reelection in 2026. >> that is a -- >> did you hear the question, senator, running for re-election in 2026? all right. sorry, you all, we are going to be needing a minute. senator. >> okay. >> the 81-year-old senator experienced something similar last month at the capitol, and he is attributing the incidents to light head defense, and manu, on a human level, it is difficult to watch that video, and you are speaking with lawmakers and what are they telling you? >> yes, senator mcconnell has been on the phone with some of the key allies since that incident indicating that everything is fine, including some of the top republicans and successors of his like john thune from south dakota, and i am told that they had a conversation s and mcconnell is sounding like himself, and phoned other key members of the team, and also, congressman jim banks from indiana, and they said that mcconnell was sharp and engaging, but one thing they did not discuss at the fund-raiser was what happened in covington, kentucky, when mitch mcconnell froze, and discussing questions persisting is the future of mcconnell. in the confidence, he indicated that he is not going anywhere, and he is expected to serve is as the leader, and he the longest serving leader, but what about next year? is he going to try to come as leader again, and this is an open-question, and many don't believe he is going to continue on after the end of this congress, and that is a big question that remains. and there is also a big question of what happened. after july, when he froze, some said that senator mcconnell should provide some more detail of what happens, and whether or not there is a larger issue at ha hand. >> obviously, the first re responsibility is to the voters of kentucky, but when you leader, it is to the other constituents, and in this case, 48 of his closest friends, so that is probably does call for a little bit more of, and i should say call for more transparency than somebody else. >> and tell his 48 colleagues what happened? >> and whatever he tells me i will trust it to be the truth. >> but so far, mcconnell's office has attributed the two instances to lightheadedness, and they did indicate that he would consult with a physician before he went to the fund-raiser yesterday after noon, but no word on what the doctor said was the underlying cause for those episodes. >> so, still some underlying questions there. and i want to continue the conversation as i am joined by political commentator s.e. cupp, and also with john, and you are a friend of mitch mcconnell, and you were there at that fund-raiser, and it has to be hard to watch that video as someone who knows him? >> of course, it is. and someone i have known my whole adult life and i care about very much. i can tell you at the fund-raiser, he was sharp. he came in, and he met with a large group of donors and he answered the questions and he made remark about several policy matters going on, and he talked about the senate map, and what is going on in the races of 2024. so it is really business as usual, and i can tell you that i was with him the day before yesterday at a lunch, and he spoke to a fairly large crowd. he took their questions for 15 or 20 minutes and opined on a wide range of topics. i have seen him a number of times throughout the month of august. he has had no impairment. he has made speeches, answered questions, and been with reporters and met with constituent, and so to see that video, and to compare it what i have seen with my own two eyes as usual, it is hard to reco reconcile. >> and that video, i understand that you say that he was sharp at the fund-raiser, and s.e., i want to bring you into the conversation. and now, dean phillips tweeted this on x, for goodness sake, for the staff and the senators of o'connell and feinstein, and it is time for term limits for congress and some basic human decency. >> yes, a number of good reasons for term limits and age limits and many for accountability, and that is because the voters deserve the best, but also to protect the legacies is of these lions of the senate in the case of senator mcconnell and senator feinstein and whatever you think of them, they are well respected in the parties, and now at the very end of their very long illustrative careers, whether they are capable of the jobs, and talking about their mental faculties and competence. that is not how either of these people should go out. and term limits in a way protect them from having to endure these really public humiliating degrading, and embarrassing and from a viewer's point of view alarming public episodes. >> scott, let me bring you back, because in order to have term limits, you have to have congress to pass legislation to give their own jobs an expiration date, and could you see that happening? the likelihood of that happ happening? >> unlikely to no chance at all. look, we have term limit, and they are called elections. the voters can limit the term to any politician they like at any time, and they can limit the terms of anyone they think is too old, but this is why we have elections. mcconnell is elected in 2020, and he is up in 2026, and i do agree in the 2024 election, we will have some conversation about the age of our national leadership. it is obviously front and center for the biden campaign, and so it is a conversation to have as a nation, but the idea that congress would install term limits over this, highly unlikely. >> i think that mcconnell was being asked about his plans for 2026 when he froze if i am not mistaken. and s.e., you made a point about the voters and in california, the median age is 37 years old, where dianne feinstein represents, and in kentucky, it is 39 years old, and talk to me about the representation, and reflecting the constituency. >> yeah, voters across the country are younger than most members of the senate and the congress. a number of the member ps of congress have been there like 40-plus years, and the public service jobs were not meant to be career-long endeavors. i think that voters do deserve better, and i wish scott were right, because i respect scott. elections were not the way we impose limits. we both know, and scott is very smart and the democratic party and the republican party are very controlling of who is primaried and how much say that the voters actually get in electing someone new, especially against someone like mitch mcconnell or dianne feinstein who is there for a long time, and they want to protect the seat. so, i don't think that we should expect self-term limits to be the way that it all works. term limits of maybe two terms, so it is not one and done, but you get another chance to do it again, and then maybe even if you have so go away for two terms, and you can run again, and that going to limit a lot of the power grabbing that has taken over the public service aspect of working in the government where staying and getting re-elected is more important than fixing problems. >> it is a conversation that we will continue to have, because scott, as you alluded to, if it is in fact trump and biden, we will have the conversation further. s.e. cupp and scott jennings, thank you. >> and speak of former president trump, we have breaking news just into cnn and the president is deciding to skip his arraignment in fulton county and deciding to enter a plea of not guilty. major implications there. we
