it is a historic day in america for all of the wrong reasons and an ex-president is going to jail to be booked for the fourth time this year, and donald trump is expected to arrive in atlanta to say that he tried to overturn the results in georgia. and who won the first republican debate? was it someone on the debate stage? and what is the line having the biggest impact the day after? and the man who led a failed rebellion in russia is presume dead and presumed dead in a plane crash in ms. coe, and t-- moscow, and the kremlin is quiet as the world speculates. i'm kate bolduan with sara sidner and john berman on cnn "news central." a world round trip going down in history. 148 hours separating the new jersey home of president trump and the courthouse in georgia that is accusing him of tryinging to steal the 2020 election. outside, supporters will be cheering him on as the sheriff's deputies take his fingerprints and then potentially take his first ever mugshot. so far, 9 of 18 co-defendants have gone through the very process. as for those who have not, the deadline to surrender, the clock is ticking, because 24 hours do so, and this a moment, 964 days in the making, when trump demanded the georgia secretary of state brad raffensperger find votes to help him win in the infamous phone call. we will get to it in new jersey outside of his home there, and what is happening with the last-minute switch, because trump is switching the attorney there in georgia. >> that right, sara. this what we know. his top attorney there in georgia who is part of the top attorneys who negotiated the $200,000 bond is replaced by steven sadow who is the top criminal attorney in georgia, and i am told this is not about findley's performance, but it is saydow's the best and well known defense attorney in georgia. he says that we look forward to the case dismissed or if necessary unbias and open-minded jury finding the president not guilty and the prosecutions tending to advance the careers of the political opponents of the president have no place in our justice system. of course, we know that, sara, trump has not been hesitant to switch up the legal team hours before the surrender, and we know he removed two top attorneys in the indictment of whether he mishandled documents in mar-a-lago in florida. >> we know that he is going to be on the way, and we are glad that you got the memo. green is in today. >> oops. [ laughter ] >> with us now, cnn legal analyst, elie honig, he has changed attorneysb and it has happened before, but drew finley was well known. >> a powerhouse. >> and he was a powerhouse, and is that something that should happen now? >> well, it is one thing to keep changing out the white house staff for example, and these lawyers have a massive task ahead of them to get ready for trial, because they have go through literally millions of documents and hours and hours of footage, and every time you change lawyers, you go back to square one, and it is just at the begin, and maybe it is not unusual for people to try out new lawyers, but now on the brink of an arraignment, and if i were giving advice to donald trump, i would say pick one and stick with it. >> they say it is nothing to do with his performance, then what is it? does it suggest that there are disagreements amongst the legal team? did someone do a google search of findley and see that he said something bad about donald trump ten years ago or what? i don't get it. >> strategic differences and the lawyers wanted to go one way, and trump wanted to go another way, and financial misunderstandings or differences or a personality conflict. so this happens, and people do change their lawyers, but again, every time you do it, you are setting your own cause back a little bit. >> he has done it in virtually every case. honestly, we would have to go through, but it is almost every case he seems to be switching lawyers. elie, in terms of traveling from new jersey to atlanta and back again and one of the unknowns, will he talk? if he talks, where will he talk? and if he talks, what will he say? and there are restrictions. >> i would say that -- i wrote down this quickly, and no direct or indirect threats against co-defendants and witnesses including the undo i wanted coconspears or the and victims including posts on social media, and no communicating with other witnesses. >> will he talk? yes. it is going to be hard to comply with that order. and keep in mind a couple of things, donald trump's agreed to the order, and the lawyers sign, this and if he is close to the line or crosses any of the lines and it would not shock me if he does, are the prosecutors and the judge going to do anything about it, and it has come close to already the restrictions of some of the other case, and to this point, nobody has done anything about it, and in the normal case, you would police this, and if someone got up there to violate the bail order, we will defy this and warn him and up the sanctions. >> if you are the attorney, you would say, look, don't do it in georgia and don't do it there, because it is rubbing the noses in it? >> i would beg him not to do it at all, but it is obviously not going to do it at all, and this order is specifically going to contemplate not only social media, but post, reposts as well. >> and now, kenneth chesebro is peeling off and requesting a speedy trial, and fine, but what is this? >> this a big deal, because it could throw a wrench into the d.a.'s plan, because 19 indicted defendants. we talk about the speedy trial, and it is the defendant's right. and that is what kenneth chesebro is doing that. and he insisted on that, and from october to november, and if that happen, then at least two trial group, and maybe it is him and others and a later group, and you can bet that donald trump wants to be in the later group, and the judge almost can't force him into the early group, and then what are you doing with it, and it is every minute of the first trial, and almost every one of the government witnesses, and it is like being every playbook opened up in front of you. >> so it is the reason that bill belichick does not put out all of the plays in preseason, because he does not want the other teams to see it. >> and it is the reason that he spies on the other practices. >> that, too, and i would mot say that. >> and wears the cutoff sweatshirts which bothers me. >> now, you have to go, elie honig. >> only john brings up football talking about law, but it is okay. he is good at it. okay. joining us now is former homeland security adviser to talk about this, and watching the ex-president turning himself in at the fulton county jail. obviously, he -- i think that at every turn no matter what happen, he turns it into a political gain, and what do you see happening here, and what is going to be more support. well, again, i am trying to think that he is going to be putting on a strong front, and no doubt personally behind the scenes he is humiliate and this is something that he hates to go through this publicly, but i think that even in donald trump's persona, he is going to double down on it, and use it as moment to double down on the claims, and everybody is conspiring against him, and this is the ongoing chance that he has been telling american people over and over, and i would say for years now that everyone is out to get him. and unfortunately that message with the loyal supporters will continue to resonate and you will see the pomp and circumstance around it. >> and also, i wanted to ask you about a planned rally outside of the court or the jail, and there are a lot of the obviously officers out there because of the ex-president coming to surrender, and i wanted to talk about the threats of those taking part in the trial, and the grand jury had their faces and addresses plastered all over the black web, and the judge in d.c. her life threaten and someone arrested there, and what do you see there? the constant attacks of the d.a. and others is putting the people in a dangerous spot? >> trump and the inner circle know exactly what they are doing there, and this is a dangerous thing and i have been concerned for the lives of the jurors and everyone involved in this situation as the investigation continues, and look, these people are just doing the public service, and the civic duties and carrying it out. i was concerned when the names were released, and that is the georgia process, but we have seen what happens when trump incites the followers and others, and others in the media, and others in far right pub collations. and their supporters, and the dark web and the social media things, and the people get dox'd and those threats are real. they carry it out, and i have seen them remain in proper support in terms of the security and the proper measures they are supposed to take to support themselves. i don't know what will happen at this rally. i think that people have seen others be held accountable for the actions on january 6th, and board some weapons on that, and i am concerned on one-offs in terms of the homes and the families. >> and the people threatened like the grand jurors, they don't have money to have security, and this is a really, really important point that people need to understand that they are just doing the civic duty, and thank you, olivia troye, and we are looking at the live pictures of the fulton county jail where the ex-president donald trump is to be turning himself in, and less than 24 hours for everyone to surrender before the deadline, john. >> and on the very day that donald trump turns himself in, the congressional republicans are prepared to launch themselves into the investigation of the fulton county district attorney, and what we know. and the chief who led the revolt against vladimir putin is presumed to be dead. was putin behind this mysterious plane crash that took him down? pretty sad. and i posted it to show that kenny's not always happy. within 24 hours people had donated over $5,000. no, you're kidding. we set up the patriotic kenny foundation to give mobility scooters to veterans. it has changed my life tremendously. none of this would've happened without tiktok. right now get a free footlong at subway. like the subway series menu. buy one footlong in the app, get one free. for freeee. that's what i'm talking about. order in the subway app today. we never just see the numbers. we see the people. marcus: detroit, it's just changed so much. you can see what it once was. and then, i think about what it can be. as an entrepreneur, it's about how i can give them the tools to empower themselves if we can just all do something small, all the small things will start to amount to something big. that's why we're here to help make it happen. a new investigation is coming. a source now tells cnn that the republican-led house judiciary committee is to announce a full investigation into the fulton county district attorney fani willis to happen as soon as today, and there a similar line of questioning they used when they launched an investigation also into the manhattan d.a. alvin bragg after he indicted donald trump. and now, we are joined by melanie from the hill. >> this is a familiar playbook from the republicans, investigate the investigators. and we did receive this inquiry into fulton county d.a. fani willis. they want to know if there is any coordination and communication between her office and special coukcounsel jack sm who indicted trump on two other cases, which she has flat-out denied. and also, they want know if any federal funds were used in the state level probe of donald trump's state election interference, and also, using some things down the line, that the house judiciary committee is looking at a bill to allow former and current presidents to move either civil and criminal cases from the state court to federal court. that is something that was first introduced after trump was indicted by the manhattan district attorney's office, but it is gaining new steam after this georgia indictment, and lawmakers don't have a ton of jurisdiction over the state level issues and even on the federal level, they are running into resistance in the efforts to intervene in the ongoing criminal case, but for republicans, this is showing trump that they are doing everything in their power to defend him. >> that is a big question of what can they do, because they don't have much jurisdiction, and how about on the state level? >> so, i was speaking to marjorie taylor greene the georgia republican here on capitol hill, and she said that she believes there is going to be a state level investigation as well, and they are pushing for a special session that republicans in the state legislature are calling to impeach fani willis, and that is a high threshold just like in congress, and so we will have to wait and see. >> good to see you, melanie. thank you for that. john? >> and alsoment for one brief section, january 6 and donald trump were discussed in the republican presidential debate. >> do you believe that mike pence did right thing on january 6th? >> this is what we need to do, to end the weaponization of the federal agencies. >> that is outside of the question. >> can you answer the question? >> this election is not about january 6th, 2021, it is about january 25th, 2025, when the nex president takes office. >> everyone deserves to know whether everyone on the stage believes that i kept the oath on that day. there is no other important duty. >> i answered this before. mike did the duty. i have got no beef with him. >> and with us now is the presidential republican candidate and texas congressman will hurd, and was that an answer? >> well, it was not an answer, and at a moment when everybody had the chance to show they were running against donald trump, they failed to take advantage of that. at times it looked like we were watching real housewives reunion on bravo rather than the republican debate. there were people without vision. >> real housewives -- what are you talk about? >> the name calling, and the back and forth. and for me, an 18-year-old kid going to vote for the first time, were they going to be able to watch this debate and understand who the next leader of the free world is going to be, and did they walk away with some, you know, trust in one of the candidates, and i don't think that it was achieved. there was a lot of talk about the problems and not solution, and how do we have unprecedented peace at the time when the chinese government is trying to surpass the united states of america as a global superpower. we have to have alliances, and make sure that america has leaders to advance a.i., and quantum computering and synthetic biology, and we have to surpass china, and these are the solutions that the american people want to see. >> who won the debate last night? >> nikki haley has strong moment, but the fact that she raised her hand in the end to say she would support donald trump even if he is convicted and if the gop is the party of law and order, then we have to make sure that we allow the court to work, and then if somebody is convicted by a jury of their own peers, we have to be supporting that jury. one of the things that, you know, that vivek had had a lot of focus afterwards, but you believe that 9/11 is a hoax. you belief that russia is not a threat. you believe that climate change is not real? it is not a serious candidate, and you want to remove the right of people to vote from 21 to 25. and you want the gop to prevent a trend that has changed in 25 years losing popular vote, we have to change the vision of those independents and democrats who are sick and tired of the vision of the country. >> how do you explain the pile-on of vivek ram swarmy at some point? >> well, folks believe he is on the move and gone from 1 to 9% in the elections. i think that he is, you know, he is a bad lounge act of donald trump, and he is trying to think that he is going to be able to and make sure that unfortunately the truth is that the truth is that the election and everyone is mimicking, and a proven loser and he has not been a proven clone of someone who is already in the race, and been successful. >> and have you not been in the race, and been in the threshold, and rerefused to sign the pledge, and you were not going to go on the stage no gnat tert what, and what would you been saying to vivek ramaswamy? >> well, i would have said to him, 9/11 is real, and 3,000 people died that day, and thousands injured and america should not be kissing the butt of war criminals like vladimir putin, and we should have been defending the friends like taiwan and not letting the chinese government to take them over, and to me, it is absolutely unacceptable, and he has said himself that he is paying attention to the issues for the last six months, and it showed last night. >> and yevgeny prigoshin is reported dead as the plane fell from the sky, ands a presidential candidate what is the right message to be sending to vladimir putin? >> well, the right message to vladimir putin is that he is a war criminal, and you have a 1 in 11 million chance of dying in a plane wreck, and two months after prigozhin tries to overthrow vladimir putin he miraculously falls out of the sky and there is somebody who happens to be in a field recording it? c'mon, this is one more example of how you cannot trust vladimir putin, and we should be doing everything within our power to win the war for the ukrainians, and that pushing russians out in crimea and donbass and with the d.o.d. budget, and to help dismantle the military and we have not had to send our sons, daughters or spouses, and to me, that is a pretty good deal. to me, the issue is not the size of the support but the speed. we should get all of the equipment to the ukrainians to win this war. >> thank you, will hurd, presidential candidate and congressman. thank you. >> thank you. and two months ago, yevgeny prigoshin was leading an attempted coup against russia, and now he is reported dead in a plane accident. is it an accident or something more sinister? and now a live look at that fulton county jail, and we are expected to see donald trump and some of the co-defendants to turn themselves in, and they have 24 hours to turn themselves in. the ex-president is expected to show up today, and we will be watching. growing up, everery time i'd get out of the shower, i would itch. my first experience with goat milk soap, it kinda was like a light bulb momenen. tiktok is a fantastic platform for diy. if you'd have told me three years ago that i would own my own business and be expanding into a separate building, i would've told you you'd lost your mind. moderate to severe eczema still disrupts my skin. despite treatment it disrupts my skin with itch. it disrupts my skiwith rash. but now, i can disru eczema with rinvoq. rinvoqs not a steroid, topical, or injection. it's one pill, once a day. many taking rinvoq saw clear or almost-clear skin while some saw up to 100% clear skin. and, they felt dramatic and fast itch relief some as early as 2 days. that's rinvoq relief. rinvoq can lower your ability to fight infections, including tb. serious infections and blood clots, some fatal, cancers including lymphoma and skin cancer, death, heart attack, stroke, and tears in the stomach or intestines occurred. people 50 and older with at least one heart disease risk factor have higher risks. don't take if allergic to rinvoq, as serious reactions can occur. tell your doctor if you are or may become pregnant. disrupt the itch and rash of eczema. talk to your doctor about rinvoq. learn how abbvie can help you save. hey all, so i just downloaded the experian app because i wanted to check my fico® score, but it does so much more. this thing shows you your fico® score, you can get your credit card recommendations, and it shows you ways to save money. do so much more than get your fico® score. download the experian app now. this is the all-new ergo smart base from tempur-pedic. and it responds to snoring, so you don't have to. so, no more nudging your partner. or sleeping on the other side... of the house. because the tempur-ergo smart base actually detects snoring... ...then automatically adjusts to help reduce it. all night, every night. don't miss our biggest sale of the year, with savings up to $700 on select adjustable mattress sets, and experience the deep, undisturbed rest of tempur-pedic. learn more at tempurpedic.com the mercenary boss behind the coup attempt behind vladimir putin this summer is reported dead. evgeni prigozhin was plummeted out of the sky and capture on camera, and you can see it there going past some sort of tower as it is going down, and it is smashing into the ground at a very high rate of speed. it then bursts into flames. according to the flight's manifest, seven passengers and three crew members were on board of that plane -- prigozhin, and three of his top officers also on that plane. the kremlin has remained silent about that event. president putin was at an event when the news broke, and neither he nor his team have said a word about this. and i am joined by julia about this, and i wanted to show the picture of the 22 or so people who have either died or been poisoned or been jailed during the putin regime, and many of them political dissidents and only spoken against putin. and what are the chances that prigozhin died in an accident not in something else that is back by putin? >> well two things. first of all, it is unlikely that he died in an accident, and the reason is that the people that you showed up there on the screen are two different categories of people. some are actual dissidents or competition for power, and preternds for people, and others like alexander navalny who was poisoned and seen as traitors, and that is something that putin has said is completely unforgivable, and what he said on the morning of january 24th when he addressed nation and said those who have taken the path of betrayal, treachery, they will be met with punishment, and something that he has constantly said is unforgivable, and the fact that on the two-month anniversary to the day that yevgeny prigoshin began the march of fairness on moscow that the plane explodes out of the sky, the idea that he is anything but a traitor being punished for the treachery is, i think slim to none. >> all of the signs are there, and certainly, a message to people in russia of course as well, those who oppose putin. i wanted to ask you about yevgeny prigoshin's background, and you have written an article that is really good that at first, he didn't want to be known as anything other than the caterer or the chef for putin, and tell us about him. >> well, e gainey prigozhin is a former convict who served a long time in soviet jails for what we would say are petty crimes, but they were quite vicious. afterwards, he started going into the restaurant business. he did in fact become a cater, and the catering business and the fact that he was becoming putin's chef was tongue and cheek, because it was a front, and he was supposed to be providing meals to the schoolchildren in moscow, and others, and the money, thousands of dollars were going out of the backdoor to provide wagner who was active in 2014 and in syria in 2015 and all over the african continent, and place where is the russian government wanted to have influence, but they wanted to have plausible deniabdeniabi the food was often so bad that the putin's cater provided that the children got dysentery, because none of the money went to food. so he was also involved in trying to influence the 2016 election here, and indicted by robert mueller in 2018. he had always denied it. he denied any connection to wagner, but in the last year, he started to brag about it, and including bragging about interfering and meddling in the u.s. presidential election. >> julia ioffe, thank you about the background of him, and we have not seen confirmation that he died in the crash, and we are waiting to see what the russian authorities can be said or believed ant bout the reporting and what can donald trump have from the debate last night. and we have reporters outside of the jail where donald trump is due to arrive in hours. meet the team... behind the team. the coach. the manager. and the snack dad. all using chase toeep up with their finances. the coach helps save goals here, because she save for soccer camp there. the coach helps anddd check this out... the manager deposited a check. magic. and the snack dad? can't we all agree that doctors and nurses who don't believe in abortions don't have to perform them? can't we all agree that contraceptions should be available? and can't we all agree that a woman who wants an abortion should not be sent to jail? >> why do you like this? >> if the basic idea is who is the most credible in a general election and take out joe biden in november and that is the case you are making, and the es sen, at least part of the essence of nikki haley's candidacy, and she did well to give an answer to appeal to general election audiences, and this is the answer that you heard her give. her performance overall was quite good in presenting case of why she ought to be the republican nominee, and presented to be electable, and different and a breath of fresh air on the stage. it can be hard to stand out, and as terry and i know, when you are preparing the candidates for a debate like this, how you get separation, and show yourself to be different, and i think that she did that last night. >> terry, can you give me the overall take, because you are not impressed what you saw out there, and if there is not a best moment, what did you see? >> well, look, it was an amazing first debate of the 2028 republican nomination fight. last night, nobody -- [ laughter ] nobody laid a glove on the guy with 50%, and frankly even more surprising is nobody went after ron desantis really who is in second place. it was literally a fight amongst a bunch of people in the single-digits attacking other people in single-digits and that was a little bit perplexing, and so i am not sure on the strategy there. look, in 2016, we fought to be the last person standing against donald trump. that strategy did not work great then, and there is no education in the second kick of the mule, and i am not sure it is going to work this time for these guys. >> and the desantis factor surprised you as well, lonee, and so, would that be kind of sad that they didn't or did he make out well because of it? >> i thought that he made out well because of it, but it is a little bit weird, because there is only one alternative to donald trump, and not five, so you can't be in the position to ceding the ground, and so ron desantis is the natural target. so if i give advice, i would say that you to do something to go at desantis. he came out untouched which means that it was a win for him, and he essentially continues to cruise where he s and able to address the questions about the campaign, and so i am a little bit confused about why the other candidates did not come after him. >> terry, one thing that stuck out to me is how much there seemed to be the appetite on the stage to voice opposition to on some level to send u.s. aid and money to ukraine, and it is a big shift amongst people that relatively speaking are polling pretty high in the republican, you know, the republican leaders of the party, if you will. what do you see in that? >> that is a divide of the people who are calling neo cons and the isolationists, and the mainstream, and it is a little bit more of a divide, and donald trump gives a voice to isolationist views and brought more into party that the slogan is "america first" and so more of the hawks on the more aggressive progressive party, and isolationist party and that is over the last decade or more. >> and terry, final thoughts from both of you, but terry, vivek ramaswamy, and what happened? what about the performance and what is different for him today? >> well, he survived last night. he did well. he got roughed up pretty well, and it is surprising to see a guy come from nowhere in the first debate ever and get attacked by, you know, the former vice president of the united states and governors and everyone else, and he survive and he had a lot of good one-liners and few gaffes, but i would be happen if i were on his team about the performance. >> and lanhee, it is about winnowing field, and do you think that the field narrows or will narrow as a result of what you saw on the stage last night?
