Welcome to inside politics sunday, im paula reed. This week could prove pivotal for candidates trying to win. On wednesday in milwaukee, the first gop debate. At least eight candidates will be on that stage. Asa hutchison is the latest to make the cut. He said he hit the donor requirements. But the elephants who wont be in the room, the faraway frontrunner donald trump. Said he will skip the debate and instead sit for an interview with tucker carlson. Hes says hes got a huge lead and it just not worth it for him to be there. A new poll this morning has him up more than 50 points trumps top rival says he still owes it for voters to show up. Answer questions about your record and decisions that you may have made or not made and if youre not willing to do that, then i think that people are not going to look kindly on that. I think every one of us that have qualified for that debate stage ought to be on the stage, be willing to square off, answer the tough questions and draw a bright line contrast. Hes a coward. Theres no other conclusion to come to that hes afraid of me and afraid of defending his record. Without trump on the stage, desantis will be the highest polling candidate on the stage. He said yesterday that he expects to be a punching bag. When youre over the target, thats when youre taking flak. If you look in the last six to nine months, ive been more attacked than anyone else. We view it as positive feedback. Well deliver our message but we we absolutely expect that and will be ready for it. Lets discuss all of this and more with our amazing panel, amy walter, David Chalian and jeff zeleny. Amy, i want to start with you. Trump has always wanted a crowded field. Nearly nine candidates on that stage. Is that a win for him . And yet in the poll that we have just been talking about, hes at 62 . Theres not another other vote there to consolidate. Theres been donald trump and then in second place for now has been ron desantis but there was a point he was within maybe ten points and now that has faded. Really the question coming out of this debate is does somebody now become a clear second place challenger out of this field. Is it still ron desantis or has somebody else come and taken that from him . And, jeff, with Asa Hutchison going to be on the stage, how does that change the challenge . These indictments should be taken seriously, that the former president is not fit for office. But beyond that im not sure it makes all that much of a difference. Asa suchison has been out there toiling away. So getting this threshold, hitting the donors is a big deal for him. And, look, i think that we have to acknowledge that this is the first real big moment of this republican primary. Up until now most people have not been paying all that much attention to voters at large. This does offer an opportunity for someone to gain some attention. Its the biggest platform for them so far so if youre not on stage, youre effectively on the sidelines of this race. Thats just how it goes with so many candidates. Its an opportunity for them but very crowded. And that cbs poll shows that voters are eager to hear the candidates not named trump to make a case for themselves. What they are not eager to hear is for the candidates not named donald trump to take on donald trump throughout the entirety. And three quarters want to see donald trump on the debate stage so his not being there will be an interesting dynamic for voters as they assess a field without him. Thats a great point. The only frontrunner, technical frontrunner, desantis, he had another embarrassing moment this week. The New York Times posting the strategy memos, basically releasing their entire game plan. So lets take a listen to what Chris Christie said about this. Its not easy to run for president , everybody. If you cant run for president in a way it that doesnt create embarrassing Processing Stories multiple times a week, you certainly cant run the white house and run the federal government or be trusted to sit across from president xi or Vladimir Putin or kim jung un. I think he may have taken a little bit far with the kim jung unpa part. The substance of the memo was not compelling either. This campaign is so heavily superpac based. Thats why you have this situation where the strategy has to be leaked so the candidate can look at it. Its also emblematic of the fact that this campaign from the very beginning has struggled to figure out what is its message . It was in 2022 im the electable guy, and now its im the woke guy and also i can be a winner and what what am i saying again . How i have to go after ramaswamy. Desantis biggest problem is he does not have a clear message. It started out it was florida, florida, florida. Then it became clear that voters on the National Stage arent electing the president of florida. So hes kind of moved beyond that. I think the question hanging over governor desantis, can he sort of the summer showing he has learned to be a better candidate . Hes holding a ton of Campaign Events in iowa and new hampshire. But wednesday, boy, so much pressure is on him from his donors, to his family perhaps and just on his own ability to perform and we dont know. And hes right that hes going to be taking a lot of flak. If youre trying to assemble a voter that has trumpier and antitrumpier voters he hasnt read that memo of strategy and it will be hanging next to everybodys television screen. The moment he attacks joe biden three to five times, whatever was recommended, Chris Christie is going to make note of that. It doesnt tell him to go after tim scott or nikki haley. It said they should take a Sledge Hammer to ramaswamey. Theyre saying take a Sledge Hammer to fake vivek. They see some potential threat from ramaswamy. He says the u. S. Should stop supporting ukraine and he made Eye Popping Comments about taiwan. Lets take a listen. Do not mess with taiwan before 2028, before the end of my first term. We are going to go to Great Lengths to make sure you do not mess with taiwan. That commitment is only until 2028, at which you point i would have left america to achieve economy conductor independence. That part of the world, they can figure it out. We dont need to worry about that anymore. I dont know that its just that desantis needs to go or will want to go and attack vivak. It Chris Christie who has been going after President Trump and others who have been less than enthusiastic. Certainly i think hell have some things to say. Im sure Asa Hutchinson will have some things to say. Debates are really about the pressure on the frontrunner and the pressure on the candidates who are at the very back of the pack, i think nikki haley being one of them. But also those trying to come up. Vivaks numbers are rising in the polls and if youre what are you looking at . I have a suspense some people may be looking to be Vice President. Im looking for the postrace conversation. How much are we going to be talking about what donald trump said to tucker and how much are we going to talk about what happened in the actual debate . On amys point on nikki haley, as the only woman on the stage, im intrigued to see does she lean into market share and how she makes use of that on the debate stage. I think shell also talk about her time as governor. Another governor on stage as well, north korea governor doug bergham. Hes going to make his case to move beyond trump by not talking about him. He talks about the economy, inflation and other ways. If hes going to have a moment in this campaign, it could come on wednesday night so watch. We will be watching. Former President Trump reacted to his fourth indictment pretty much the same way he reacted to the first three. Its a witch hundred dollar, a continuation of the witch hunt. They want to silence you and they mean silence. I think theyre sick people. I think they are people that have no idea how the world works and they have no idea the anger they cause. I have four of them now, if you look. Four over the last couple of months. And frankly, it discredits everything. They are all similar in the sense that there is no basis for them. Trump was charged last week in Fulton County georgia for allegedly plotting to subvert the election. David, usually being arrested is not a good look. But when you are really trying to capitalize on the idea of being a martyr, is it better for him to try to make a spectacle of this . Not even donald trump thinks this is a benefit to him overall and his political standing. Yes, in the short term its having a rallying effect, hes seeing his support rise and donations come in, all of this is true. But in the even donald trump believes this is good for his longterm standing. When you hear him in that interview you just played where he said, i have four of them now and then he said they were all baseless, right, and that theres no reason for them whatsoever. He is still totally unwilling to think theres any accountability in process for his actions, that his actions have anything to do with this. That will be up to four separate juries if his actions are to be held accountable. Another similar question is about the mug shot. At the federal level he didnt have a mug shot taken. Everyone else to goes to Fulton County processing has a mug shot. What do you think theyll say here . Well, you are the expert on all of these things but my sense is the politics of it, i dont know that its a great look. Hes already gotten the rally around effect that he wants. I just sort of expect, again, given how much attention is being put on this debate and well see how much coverage it gets the next day, why not go the day after the debate and make the conversation once again all about donald trump. Thats what he does quite brilliantly. So no matter what happens, were going to be talking about donald trump the next day. He has to look defiant and unfazed. The danger of it is that he looks weak, he looks like its getting to him. If he has a mug shot at all, hes obviously going to want to avoid that. I want to look at the calendar. These are both political events and the few trials already on the calendar, this is incredibly crowded. I need to pull out my own calendar to remember when all these trials are happening. Do you think that voters deserve a chance to see these trials before they cast their ballot next november . And if they cant have all, is there one in particular you think should really go in the election . Im torn on this question because on the one hand, i do think it would be best for everybody to make the voting decision with all the available information. On the other hand, the underlying issues have been pretty well ventilated and are going to be debated between now and then. It going to be hard to coordinate all these trials, let you a loan with a political calendar. It would be extremely unlikely to get all four before the election. I agree. I think we might get one. Polls show trump has 57 percent around gop voters. Does that mesh with what youve heard . There is still a majority inside the Republican Party that is interested in turning the page, in finding a way forward to win back the white house, et cetera. What this is is a National Poll and the cnn poll is an average of the most recent polls. The snapshot at this time in the National Race is this. It not how primaries are conducted. Tomorrow well see a new poll out of iowa that will be very interesting and row vealing. It used to be very difficult to Fund Republicans who would talk about their disgrace of the president. People are shopping and looking for other candidates but he is still the frontrunner in this case. It really doesnt matter if he doesnt have a majority at this point. I think we have to be patient and people are just becoming phone and introduced. Were in august. History would suggest that some national frontrunners dont always stay that way but theres not much guide for this race because hes the former president that was this well known. And weve never seen anything blow a lead this big, historically. That would be quite unprecedented. Add it to the list. I mean, i think if youre one of Donald Trumps opponents, what youre hoping is that people who are saying right now im voting for donald trump, i i dont think this is fair, hes the best to beat joe biden, they are rallying around this defense, that are picking on my guy so i have to defend my guy is different from when all is said and done im going to vote for this person, i could find someone else who will also be a fighter. But that is thats the stretch, right, because nobodys really directly made that case. Now, were seeing some outside groups try to make this case of sort of what wed call the gold watch strategy. Youve been great, thanks, yes, youre getting picked on, yes, youre being persecuted but maybe its time to move on, we turn the page and get a candidate we know is going to beat joe biden. The problem is that that is a very nuanced conversation to have and voters arent really into nuance. No, they certainly are not. In terms of using social immediate why to attack districts, judges, even talking about a grand jury, their names are now public. You dont hear a lot of republicans pushing back on this. Are we on the press i pus really dangerous going into this seasonle trials if. We dont see republicans pushing become on many of Donald Trumps behaviors. But clearly this is going to be a subject, as you know, paula, of lots of litigation and work to be downthough id imagine as youve reported out, too, judges are going to be very, very careful to try and step in here because political speech is obviously one of the most protected things we have in our society. So this reminds me of that sort of by playing in the republican pace at this point. But what they really need to do is get bidens numbers up amid independents and others. Well see if it works. I think so much of what goes into Voters Perception of it, whether its the economy or other issues, is who he is and his age being a very about but if youre the president for another four years, what is that going to mean for the stability of our political system, our economic system, if he is sitting in that chair . So i think its hard to pick those little threads from that. Lets take a listen to what some of his rivals that are sourt of seizing on this issue. They sayin flagss coming down but were living with all that inflation we picked up over the last three years. If you take the median home in this country five years ago and compare what that Mortgage Payment monthly would be to median home today, its over twice as much on a monthly basis. The Average American working family because of joe bidens inflation is paying 700 more a month on basic food and groceries and gasoline. So even if inflation is falling, prices are still high. People feel that. Is this going to be the message for the election . It depends on future trends of some of these Economic Indicators. People understand that their wages have not been keeping up with there bills. The last few months there have been some positive trends. Pu but i think that this ad Campaign Works at another level. Its not going to change how people feel about the economy but i think its a useful contrast for biden to be talking about the economy while republicans are talking about issues that voters are. Giuliani, who made his name as a new york prosecutor taking down Mafia Kingpins in the 1980s is now charged with breaking the very law he used. With the whole rico thing going on, we didnt even know that. It can be interesting when we all get together. I dont know most of these people. I probably have done more against Organized Crime than any prosecutors in history. What the hell am i going to lie for . Rudy giuliani could use some friends right now because as his legal troubles soar, so do the costs of fighting them. Hes at the center of numerous criminal investigations and civil lawsuits and his own lawyer told a judge last week hes effectively out of cash. Rudy giuliani and rob costello traveled to convince trump to help him out but the notoriously stingy trump did not commit to an amount or timeline and did say he might help. So far the former president has not given him any money. Hes only received 300 from a trumpaligned Political Action committee. Is trump taking a risk here by not helping giuliani out . Its very expensive to fight these charges. If he doesnt have the money to fight them, he may have to cooperate. Is that a risk . Its hard for me to imagine that Rudy Giuliani would turn on the former president and cooperate. As you have reported, he is out of money. Well have to see where it goes. I think the other defendants, the fact that there are 19 defendants in this case, i just think the math of alf rajs would show that some of those defendants may cooperate. But im not sure that trump has the biggest concern for rudy. This is what the former president does. He doesnt pay his legal bills no matter who it is. Theres no staff member important enough to him to help or defend them. I dont found this surprising a the all. Why would a tough on crime prosecutor align himself with a mob admiring individual like former President Trump . Well, politicians do love one thing and that is to get attention, especially those who are no longer on the top of the list anymore. He has been somebody who obviously was a well known political figure. At some point youre no longer that person, you have to decide what do you want to do with the rest of your life. If you want to still be in the spotlight attaching yourself to somebody who is in the spotlight is the best way to do it. We all cover politicians. They are they just dont think in the same way that a lot of other people do, right . They have egos, many of them, that just are different than your average person. So youre correct, an average person will look at this and say why would you do this . You know Donald Trumps not going to pay you. Why would you get next to him . You know this is going to end badly for you. But thats not the way that that is working. Certainly not. And then theres the mark meadows of it all. Lets take a listen to what John B Bolton said about mark meadows. A lot of people have pointed to mark meadows not named as a coconspirator in the federal indictment but obviously named as a defendant here. Its pretty hard to see how he can be separated that way. So perhaps he cooperated at the federal level, didnt cooperate enough at the state level. And it only seemed like the Mark Meadows Long Game was just allegiance to trump at all costs. But that seems to be changing. Is that what you see . Well, we are in a position of having to speculate but it certainly the evidence is certainly suggestive that maybe hes been cooperating. That would be pretty devastating to the former president , his white house Chief Of Staff in any and all of these cases cooperated against him. How would that impact mark meadows future, his political career going forward. I dont know that he would have a political career going forward. Its not as though trump in all of thievesese cases is making a detailed factual defense. His defense is on two levels. One, these laws are being str stretched and, two, im going to be president and im going to stop these prosecutions. Except for georgia, which is also where mark meadows and Rudy Giuliani are charged. And then had a disastrous president ial campaign and the shine was off him a little bit and he started down a road, lavish spending and the like and saw donald trump as perhaps his ticket to ride back to some of that fame and fortune and glory i think you see there with the hair dye running down his face.
