This our asiana starts now. This is where we begin. We have a Disturbing Development in president trumps case in georgia. The grand jury he voted to indict him and they may have been docs online. Social media profiles, even Home Addresses are circulating on these trump forms and sites that have been previously linked to extremist attacks. Some anonymous users are calling for violence against those jurors. A texas woman was threatening to kill the judge in the federal election case. She left a voicemail saying if he does not get elected in 2024, we will kill you, so sleep with one eye open. Shes Law Enforcement and intelligence angeles, for previous news, laura lopez and former u. S. Attorney, Michael Moore. I want to start with you on the threats and the arrests related to the federal case. What does this tell you about the trajectory of things Going Forward . It is predictable. You know, you have mr. Trump himself, saying that if you come after us, we come after you. He has made statements about the judge in the manhattan case. He has made statements about the prosecution in washington, the judge in washington, and so, he has set the table for his constituents. So, when a phone call comes into the federal judge, starting off with racist comments, hey, you stupid slave, threatening to kill her, saying that if donald trump is not present in 2024 we are coming for you, putting you on a pike. This is part of these atmospherics that has the sheriff in georgia, who was receiving his own threats, the d. A. , the manhattan d. A. , increasing security details. The key here, in this case, is an example of the threat to the judge of the washington case. But, lets look at the chance with the grand jurors. The key is going after these people and showing there is a consequence for this. Georgia law title 16 chapter 20 makes it a crime, punishable by 20 years, up to 20 years, to Friday Grand Jury or ager or for any judgment or verdict. So, they are going to be very forward leaning and making sure these threats come at a cost. You know georgia law very well, michael. This is the law. I didnt know it until this indictment came out. This is the law for transparency reasons. Is this someone in georgia . The jurors will all be known in the criminal trial, as well. They will be known. There will be if the trial is televised, it will be. There would not be at that point pictures of the jurors on television, they would like the jury. They never show them. Some of them their names would be released. Some of this comes a little bit with the territory. And i am not suggesting whats going on his right, but it is not uncommon for people to befriend if you are a prosecutor or a judge. You get used to that. What you dont hear about often is this carrying on with grand juries. You never hear about that, and this might boil over. The key is, you need to do it with a heavy had quickly. And, not necessarily try to make a motion to a protective order in this case because you cannot blanket directly back to a defendant. But you can, because the law allows you to go forward in georgia, to prosecute these individuals quickly. And, make sure that the absolutely. And it should be done without hesitation. Someone needs to be doing it this morning. The anomaly here, you cannot prosecute the people who did the doctor because the state created a public record. But you cant prosecute the people who use that information to make threats. One of the things i think to some degree, people in the lead up to january 6, they get a little bit numb or dismissive of mr. Trump. Trump would say something, he would attack judges, the prosecution, this is a normal for him. Its easy to ignore it or pass it off. And, that you reach situations like this where you say, is this really problematic . Or is this somebody with a friend that is empty. Was the striving something that could bring a violence . I think it is somebody that could bring violence. This was one of the most test test test one of the biggest examples, when people take that rhetoric and decide to act which is that they had heard for months in the lead up to january 6th, lies about the election. That the presidency was being stolen. And they decided to go there because the president encouraged him to go to the capital. So, we saw the results of that. People died that day, officers died that day. One of the supporters died that day. And, just recently also, there was a man that was killed by fbi utah for threatening the life of President Biden as well as the d. A. Alvin bragg, as well as other elected officials. And, lace inside all of this, is racism, as was pointed out, and trump is very specific about the language that he uses when he talked about black jurists. He uses the word thugs. Repeatedly, when you talk about black jurists. That is a signal that he is sending to his constituents. We are beyond the point where we can look at those comments and those threatening comments from the former president and think that he is not aware of who is reading them and who is watching them and the fact that Extremism Groups look at what he posts, and then, they potentially act based on what he says, for or against. Cnn reached out all of the companies as well as the attorneys for the parents, we have not heard back. Let me start with you, john. This has been difficult to say the least, to hold companies and social Media Companies accountable. Is there any reason to believe that they might be successful in the effort . May be based on the facts of the case. You know, the shooter was a High School Student that lived 200 miles outside of buffalo in a small town, the parents of two engineers grew up in a family of brothers and sisters. But, in covid, he went down a deep dark depression on the internet, became fixated on this racist propaganda. Heres the key within a message board, and his high school, saying what are you looking to do after high school, what is the goal that you have. He says, to commit a Mass Shooting. That is flagged, the state police investigated. He is taken to a medical facility. He is evaluated. And he says i was just kidding. And from there, hes able to order rifles, bulletproof vests, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, and so, facts of the case looking at this, you could say that the alarm bells could have been going off in different places. As a prosecutor, when you look at the role that Technology Companies have or are proceeds to orioles alleged to have played in some of these issues, is there anything that you see space oriented wise to go after them on a legal basis or to try to bring cases to get them. Probably not much. Just being candid. As far as a former prosecutor standpoint, there are some criminal acts that are done by the media, by having videos play or having the content accessible with those things. Balance it with the rights to have information out on the public domain. From a criminal side, this is a civil case. The burden is different in the standard is different. Allegations are different. So, there may be a way. They have not historically been successful here. But also, you have situations where they talk about parental liability and other things as well in cases, and all of these are different avenues to seek some redress here. I think the civil court, if they have any hope, is where you will see some activity. There has been a bipartisan appetite in washington, to change what gives the social Media Companies such liberty and that is section 230. They basically says we as companies are not responsible for the content on our sites. Cnn is responsible for what we do. They are not because we are not a media company. It keeps getting stolen. Is there reason to believe that my change . Because changing that would change this a lot. Anytime before the election, i dont think its going to happen. But, that is something that we were just talking about, extremism and experts are hopeful that Something Like that, the law will change because of the fact that so much radicalization is occurring online more and more. Its also hard, the policy on it is hard. Im not pulling the politics aside, but finding the overlap between the two parties on the policy here, thats what we pay them to do. I am very aware of that. We dont know exactly where all of these trials will ultimately land on the calendar, but all of the different prosecutors have brought cases against him. I want to do it between january and may. They wanted taken to trial at a moment that is convenient for them, before he becomes president in 2024. But, popping, one of the things that he has learned so far and we are watching to see if other cases will go the same route, is that the judge in the federal case against donald trump related to january 6th has made quite clear that criminal trials take precedence over politics. And so, the idea that trump may need to try or you want to try to hold off his trials and his corporate seedings, because he is other things that need to do, that might hold not a lot of sway in court. It will do much with prosecution. But it will also be up to the judges on where all these things land on the calendar. I am watching that, federal case related to january 6, quite closely, because today, trump steam is going to say when they want the trial to be. They will keep the arguments out and in the next 11 days, not only will he be arrested in georgia, the new case, the indictment, but they will be hearings in other cases including a hearing where they really get down to the brass tacks about discussing when the trial will be in the federal case related january 6th. There are these dates that the d. A. Wants march 4th. That is not get pushed back because there is going to be pretrial motions as soon as these codefendants get discoveries. You imagine taking injury for these 19 codefendants . They get discovery, i want this thrown out, all of these different motions trying to move into federal court, Michael Moore just said to me that he thinks it could get pushed into 2025. So, that is the reality here. They want to go ahead and post the narrative that they should have done this a couple years ago, but in reality, this could be finished after the election. It can be harmful for the gop if trump is the nominee. And, the potential impact, what was the second thing you asked . My baselines. You got a little bit as well. Thats right. It was the enthusiasm. Thats a good point. I was asking about the money. Weve been reporting, you look at the filings, theres a crunch not for the campaign but also the super pack. Money is not an issue. All of these issues and trials and dates, they cost money. They sure do. Millions of dollars to defend him on multiple fronts. Not only that, you have the money piece of it, i talked to experts over the last several days that say look, its one thing to get indicted in one case. Thats hard enough. To try to defend yourself on multiple fronts, at the same time, multiple cases in multiple jurisdictions, its a very complicated matter and it is hard and expensive and time exhuming. And he is running for the presidency in the debate is next week. Its on wednesday. All of these things are collected together. I was so struck. Visually, it helps to see the calendar and even if things get delayed, they most likely will. You are still that is the issue that hangs over the republican primary. It is only going to get louder and louder, it will get worse before it gets better. We have any indication of when or how trump is going to surrender himself . Because it could bump up right with the debate. Thats true. Absolutely not. Theyre negotiating that right now with the d. A. It could happen the day of the debate. Just like they pointed out, it could happen after the debate. If it happens after, again, he will suck the oxygen away from all of those constituents, as they are trying to try to actually convince voters without taking the most direct shots of the former president , convince the gop base that they are better than he has. Is another example of how trump has been able to keep the spotlight on himself and every juncture of the primary thus far. It has been pretty amazing, for any other candidates, despite different efforts, some not criticizing him, some trying to go all in on criticizing him. Nobody has been able to break through just yet. I do think we need to remember, that on the ground in a place like iowa, things are more fluid than it feels like when we are talking about it in the national context. Those voters are engaged with these other candidates, a could move around some, and we do have time. However, those candidates are really looking to wednesday, they good look hard to get to the debate stage. Making the cut off to get on the stage. And they were hoping that this could be the big moment. But, if trump surrenders on wednesday or thursday, to lauras point, boom, thats it. We are not talking about the debate anymore. Can we talk about the fact that we are doing debate prep , twice over, once with trump in once without . Thats ridiculous. People like Chris Christie are preparing for whether or not they will have to take it directly to trump, or if he has to then pivot and target ron desantis. I think one of the more interesting questions im focused on is just the overall impact, right now, looks like donald trump is going to really be the republican nominee. I know things can change, but, ultimately, republican or moderate public and voters that i have been talking to, they just really are not willing to go back to the republican party. They do not see an opening for them. And, they are not happy with the way things are going in the grand old party. To bobbys point, will or will not trump either. What im looking to, these candidates with us for defendant trump, and all of these legal troubles, somebody like ron desantis, or tim scott, and others, this is the weaponization of the government. If trump is not on the stage, this Chris Christie by proxy go after those people and are they then stuck having to defend trumps actions . Thats right. He is coming on the show tomorrow morning. Search teams have covered 38 of the area, they have an additional 225 people added to the efforts and another 20 dogs as well. The governors says that he estimates more than 1000 people are still missing. Some homeowners are only getting now a look at what is left. Reporter richardson walked the recharter neighborhood. Reporter we are in the neighborhood here, which was destroyed by the fire. Walking around, it is very hard to take in. Everything is absolutely burned. Utility lines still hanging, all of these cars have been completely melted to the ground. I have to tell you, theres a certain smell of this neighborhood, a stench in the air. It smells of ash and decay and chemicals and other things that i dont even know what it is. Look at this, we keep hearing about the burned metal. This is steel that was completely burned and then you can see the Fine Particles of ash. This is why this area, Health Officials have been saying that it is toxic. It is radioactive. It is not good to be here for look at these cars, it is unreal. The car windows just blown out, and in the glass was melted into the pavement. What struck me about being in this neighborhood, is that part of it wasnt not destroyed. And now you have just up that road, with those homes that were not destroyed but still covered with dust and so it, they are now walking to their homes for 10 minutes until half an hour just to get to their homes so they can be there. I was in los angeles visiting my children, and, for two or three days, but frankly unable to get back. And, that happily was put right there, to get a plane to come back. Completely helpless. And, also, i was in touch with my extended family here, and girlfriend, and her family. And, the ohana of 120 people who worked at the restaurant, i gathered at some point fairly early on, they were threatened, and then literally within minutes had gone. All of these things, they are trying to simulate and then immediately clock in and how to find out who is where, which is not only the appropriate thing to do, is still continuing, there are people missing. We were blessed within the restaurant, but, we did not know where about 50 people were for quite some time. In this instance, we were safe. As you know, many others, it was not to be such a positive story. We are all in shock, people are way more in shock than the person you are talking to now, being me. But, elements of that, actually, i woke up this morning, and i turn around to my lovely girlfriend and said its gone . And then they start thinking, it was full of family, and funny things that people love to see. And all of that is completely and utterly disappearing. Again, no relevance to the tragedy of losing life. Reporter what have you found has been the most difficult thing that people have been trying to get, or, just simply, what have you found has been the thing that people have needed the most . At least, this particular juncture, this event . Well, the academics of that, their food and shelter and something on your back. And, some modicum of safety being offered to you. After that, i think, really, the overview of the most important thing, having said the initial things that hit so hard to people, is a sense that they have support. And, help is on the way, which of course, is already here. But in the initial stages of anything like this, that has to be thought of as the most important thing, is, when are people going to come and help . And then, as you go down the road of absorbing the enormity of what has happened here, to keep the attention, as often, a huge problem. But, thats because the world we live in is here today gone tomorrow. Governor josh created stopping developers from buying lands that were destroyed by these fires. Because potentially they can be really developed in a way that is not quite true to the history and the roots of some of these particular communities. How should that Rebuilding Process start . This is a huge blowback to the history and the legacy of these islands. Lahaina is the old world capital. At least some of these islands. And we should be reminding of the good graces of culturally, what that town actually means to the hawaiian people. So, having said that, its obvious what side of the fence that i am dropping down on. Anything that happens the future , it has to be a holistic consulting with the history of these islands, with the history of the people, who must remain with the faculty of having a real voice. And anything other than that, again, it would be a bother to me, if it was just turned into some playground. I do not believe that this will be allowed. And, i would certainly waive more than one flag or two, if things had that way. I moved here very many years ago. I consider myself part of these islands, but i am a visitor. And, culturally, i have been traveling my whole life. That is really what this is. The essence and the real backbone of these islands, they are people who have lived here for hundreds of years. And, one has to be gracious and have huge deference to a factory of history. And i think, in truth, many people who come from the Hawaiian Culture understand and thankfully interest, are being reminded about how just important the lovely islands are. So, in any context, its about honoring and having dignity and of coming out of this disaster. Omar jimenez joins us. Thank you for having that conversation. He cares deeply about the island itself and the people. You know, i know you will mentioned before going to it, this is not his second home or anything. This is not a vacation home. This is where he lives. This is where hes lived for decades. While this is a famous musician of the quarter, hes also a resident going through a lot of this as well. I should also mention about what we talked about, the maxi would ovation, they are trying to connect people with charities. The food bank, the White Community foundation. Because he wants to be part of the Rebuilding Process. I cover a lot of disasters like this, obviously, i am not maui. But, one of the elements that you see, whether it is a hurricane or a wildfire, it can be easy to start the Rebuilding Process, it is difficult to replace. And, that is what i think we are going to see. There is so much fisheries read. You see how much history there is, and we talk about it, i talked about it a little bit towards the end there. It was more about, you know, there are concerns from the governor about how this land will be rebuilt. And trying to make the outside developers do not come in and do it in a way that upsets that history. And he wants to be part of the movement to make sure that it is rebuilt the right way, in a way that pays proper difference to the history so that while you might not be able to replace everything that was lost, you can at least get pretty close to the building. Rebuilding process of course is something that is in the future. There are a lot of needs right now for people. You cannot even get to the point of rebuilding because you have over 1000 people missing. There is so many needs where the basic ones, food, shelter, clothing and peoples backs. You can do anything because we need to sift through the carnage. Thank you for the interview. I think that the Secretary Of State is obviously sending a message and that message is for paul and for our family, the u. S. Government is continuing to advocate for him and his release. Its a message for the kremlin, not the u. S. Government has not let up and their foreignpolicy person is willing to call a prisoner which is astounding. Russia is not responded in a way to the proposal raised so far to bring them home. We will keep you posted. The culture war fights, they have landed in the library. A wyoming public library, firing its head librarian after removing certain books. The board alleges were sexually inappropriate for minors. The librarian tyre leslie would not budge in part because she believes the community is harmed by not having access to a wide variety of information. Thats what she told the huffington post. It all came to a head a special Board Meeting where she was fired. I make a motion to vote for her position to be terminated. favor . There you have it. Many in the community disapproved of the decision including this man who spoke to the board before the vote. When you start outlining books because of your personal religious and moral code, in this country, you are going against the constitution, you are going against what we refounded for, this is ridiculous and im embarrassed for this board. Thank you. [ applause ] cnn has reached out to the board for comment. The board member said earlier this summer, this is about making the library more responsible. Joining us, the librarian at the center of all this, leslie, the former director of the public library. Thank you so much for joining us, one thing that i wanted to ask, you walk us through how it got to this point . This was not just a snap of the finger. This was a process that evolved over time. Right. It all began, in june of 2021. I wasnt surprised, to have this happen. It started because we had a facebook post, promoting lgbtq plus books, a commissioner commented, a County Commissioner commented on the post. And, the next thing i know, the next County Commissioners meeting, i get called in to the meeting, and i was told that there was a room full of people there to complain about the library. I had no idea that it was coming. So, shall to the commissioner, and people in the offense complaining. And i get an opportunity to explain how the book challenge process works. And, and so, i encouraged the audience if they had problems, to use the process with the library. Following that, that same day, i get a call from a County Commissioner concerned about a childrens Summer Reading program that featured a magician. The complaint was, that the magician was transgender, and looking into it, we had no idea, but had no problem with that either way. And plan to continue with the program. But, the community, the same antilibrary crowd that has been on the commissioners meeting, they started really protesting and the magician had received some death threats, she canceled the program for her own safety and the safety of the children. And in spite of that, the same group chose to picket in front of the line of very that day. Picket signs, do not transgender our kids, or, get out of our town. Thats how it all started. It was with that kind of rhetoric, the drama at the library. We were all taken offguard by it later, into the months, we started getting book challenges, and i did have a couple of these activists. We go to the sheriffs office, to press charges against me, to having a obscene material that would harm children. So, a Special Prosecutor was brought in to review the complaint, and it was found by this prosecutor that it was not prosecutable. No charges were brought against me. May i ask, for people who are trying to contact realized what is happening, because it seems like a pretty massive escalation over a short period of time, related to a library and books. The concerns about sexually explicit content and its availability to minors, what kind of books for these . Is there any merit to those concerns . There is nothing in the library that can be classified as pornography, in any way shape or form. We do have some education books, and biology books, things like that. And, things like that. They are important for youths to have access to, in case they have questions or need to work on her homework. There were some lgbt themes in these books and i felt like the lgbt part of that was a part of the complaints. When i take my kids the library, the lower floor is the intersection, and higher up is the adults. They ask you to fully remove these books . Because, you know, some of the Board Members argue, they want to protect children from all sexual material. They want the books out of the whole library . Or was this about moving them . I think it was more about moving them, at least as far as the board was concerned. With community members, if they would have liked to have them moved as well. And so, the thought was, just move these books up into our adult collection. And, you know, so, the audience that these books were intended for, they were teens. Then questions, you said. Right. They had questions that they are seeking information from. They would be helpful to them. And, the shelves while theyre browsing, they may not realize theyre there and they may not be able to get to that information they need. Were out of time. Please keep us posted on how this proceeds.
