to be the day before the first 2024 super tuesday primaries for the republican presidential contest. this is also before the proposed trial dates for two other of his criminal trials. let's get straight to paula reed for us. walk us through the scheduling proposal here. >> reporter: the key word is proposal. this is her request. she said in her press conference that she wants to try all 19 defendants together, and she wanted to do that in six months. but jake, it's a pretty aggressive timeline. six months to put on a rico case? these are notoriously complicated, tend to be drawn out. and then you have 19 defendants. at least three of whom are expected to challenge this, try to get it moved to federal court. so it's unlikely this is going to be granted. she's also competing for real estate on a very crowded calendar. let's start with january of next year. there is a request by the special counsel to do the january 6th trial the first week of january. then you have the e. jean carol defamation case january 15th. >> same day as the iowa caucus. >> exactly. manhattan hush money case scheduled for former president trump at the end of march. and then tentatively scheduled the mar-a-lago documents case in may. as you noted, i just laid out the legal events, to say nothing of the many events and deadlines and primaries for him as candidate trump. >> yeah. something like 57 primaries and caucuses. paula, mark meadows has filed to have this case moved to federal court. so what's the argument? >> we expected the former president and allies would try to get this state case moved to federal court. if he can get this moved to federal court, he will move to dismiss it. his attorneys argue that he's protected because everything he did they allege in this indictment was done in his capacity as the white house chief of staff, and there is a statute that is meant to protect federal officials from state prosecution. jake, i don't know that he's going to be successful on this argument of getting it dismissed. but if he or the former president or rudy giuliani, who says he will try this too, if they get this moved to federal court, there is at least one big advantage for them, and that is the jury pool. fulton county is a heavily democratic county. so the jury pool is going to be skewed democratic. if you can get it removed to the federal jurisdiction, they would have a wider jury pool. but i think one of the biggest issues here for the american people is if this is moved to federal court, you won't have cameras documents every moment of this case. >> thanks so much. in addition to being indicted in georgia, rudy giuliani is staring down hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal bills and sanctions, and his lawyer claimed he will not be getting any help paying those bills from his client, donald trump. katelyn, how did the former new york city mayor find himself in such a financial hole? >> well, it was working for donald trump after the 2020 election. when you look at all of the legal issues that rudy giuliani is facing, and he's facing some personal lawsuits, some difficulties with his business, unpaid phone bills from 2020. the vast majority of what he has to face, and the costliest things that he has to do are respond to defamation lawsuits from his work after the 2020 election. there are the criminal matters, which are likely to be quite a low laborious and costly thing, having a lawyer represent him, talking to the special counsel's office, he's been charged in fulton county and will now vowing that he's anxious to go to trial to fight it. but the lawsuits related to the 2020 election are progressing, and every time they take another step forward, it costs money to litigate. it costs money for him to get access to his records to turn them oversubpoenas. so all those sues him are going to the court and asking them to sanction rudy giuliani for just not showing up essentially in the course of these lawsuits. that doesn't even factor into what happens if he were to lose them, and he's already conceding he did make false statements. >> we know trump's super pac has spent millions on legal fees for him and his associates. fans say this is him being generous, critics say this is a way to keep people in line and make sure nobody flips. either way, why wouldn't rudy giuliani have his legal fees paid by the trump super pac? >> in 2020, rudy giuliani was sending them very large bills for their day rate and there was question whether trump wanted to pay that. but all we know is that rudy giuliani has a lawyer who has been representing him, or a team of lawyers on these various things related to what he did for trump after the 2020 election. and they have not been paid by donald trump or by trump's pac, the state of america pac. however, one of the things that has happened is that giuliani incurred a debt of $320,000 just to keep his electronic records from 2020 archived and available for lawsuits. that was something where the pac came in, paid that bill and gave him an extra $20,000 just to get him through a little bit more there. but he was in court today. his lawyers were in court today in a defamation case, and they are not expecting any more financial help. and it took them months just to get that $340,000 from the trump campaign. months of negotiations. >> all right, thanks so much. as rudy giuliani's legal case unfolds, a cnn original series bigs into how he got there, called "giuliani, what happened to america's mayor?" that's a good question. it's air thing saturday night at 8:00 eastern, only here on cnn. i want to bring in republican presidential candidate will hurd. i'm sorry, congressman hurd, let me start by just asking the question that is in the little of that, "rudy giuliani, what happened to america's mayor." what do you think happened to him? >> he got tideed up with donald trump. it seems a lot of people in donald trump's orbit that have ended up falling on hard times or ending up in prison. it's really unfortunate. as someone -- you know, i was in the cia when 9/11 happened. you know, you know the importance of new york city and the former mayor's role there. it's pretty disappointing, and i'll be tuning in watching to see what happens. >> thank you. you have said that trump's fourth indictment, the one from this weekend in georgia, is just the latest example of how donald trump's baggage will hand joe biden re-election if trump becomes the republican nominee. looking at the latest polls, showing that trump and biden are essentially tied, though, a new quinnipiac poll out "today" shows biden at 47%, trump at 46%. why do you think this is going to hurt trump? it seems to be only helping him solidify the republican base, and i don't see any obvious on the head-to-head polls. >> we should have learned since 2016, polling is a snapshot in time. it is not an indication of who is actually going to vote. these were the same polls two weeks ago when that -- the legal -- the ballot issue in ohio came to a vote last week. it was basically a vote about abortion. the week before that vote, everybody thought it was close. it ended up going down by 18 points. we saw this in 2022. the weekend before the election in 2022, the same polls, the same progresnosticators were sag that kevin mccarthy was going to have north of 30 people as a buffer, and ended up only having five. there's no question that right now, donald trump is in the pool position of the election. as these issues keep coming out, people are getting sick and tired of this baggage. they want people talking about -- articulating their vision of the future. how many conversations have you gotten in to some of these terrible policies of joe biden? the $6 bhl illion given to iranians? the fact that republicans haven't been able to talk about the problems with the biden administration is because we're consumed by donald trump. the gop, if we nominate donald trump for president, it is going to go to joe biden, period, full stop. we need to let someone who is not afraid of donald trump but articulating a vision for the future. if your viewers believe in that go to hurdforamerica.com and give me at least $1. >> we did cover the $6 billion in unfrozens sassets in exchang for those five iranian-americans be remamded to house arrest in iran, just for the record. but i hear you. let's talk about a couple of issues because i want to talk about the war in ukraine. the u.s. announced another $200 million aid package. polls suggest now that most americans are opposed to more fundi ing by the united states support ukraine. there are wide gaps by political party on this. you come from an intelligence background, as you noted. do you think the u.s. is doing too much, not enough, just right? what do you think? >> i don't think we're doing too much. i think we need to do stuff faster. and the reason that we're having that disconnect in polls is people are not articulating why ukraine continues to matter. the broader perspective is, we, the united states, created an international order after world war ii that benefits us. if we don't defend that international order, that you are the -- that hurts us. the dollars spent is about 5% of the budget in the war of ukraine. and we have dismantled the russian military without having to send our military to the conflict. i think that's a really good deal. the problem with this administration is they're not articulating what a vision of victory is. to me, victory means we're pushing the russians out of all of ukraine, including crimea and the donbas. we should make sure they have all the equipment they need and even hit and attack positions inside russia. we need to stop trying to make the ukrainians fight this war with hands tied behind their back. if we do this, it's not going to be a forever war, but something that can wrap up sooner rather than later. >> mike pence said he would eliminate the department of education on day one and return those funds to the states with the mandate they must expand school choice. what do you make of that plan, do you support it? >> well, look, i don't think getting rid of the department of education is the right way to go. i think that the amount of federal dollars that go to school is important. i think school choice is, i support school choice, and i'm also supportive of making sure public schools have the same rules and regulations that magnate schools do. we need to figure out how to get an ai tutor to every student that needs it. the tools exist in order to do that right now. i was lucky to have parents and an older brother and sister to help me with my homework. imagine now that we have something that is in everybody's pocket that teaches them how to fish rather than just giving them a fish. and that's something i think would be of valuable use in the department of education, because ultimately in the united states of america, you have income equality, because we have education inequality and we can fix that. >> one week from today is the republican debate. you need to hit the polling and donor threshold. if you don't make the debate stage, is that a campaign ender for you, do you think? >> i'm pretty confident we'll hit those requirements before the deadline on august 21st. i'm hoping folks help us out with that. we're still working towards those goals. but i feel confident we're going to be able to pull that off, and once we do that, we won't have to worry about the second part of the question. >> republican presidential candidate will hurd, good to see you. thank you so much. >> thanks for having me on. a gruesome search. one team saying the fires in hawaii were so bad, it looks like everything was cremated. a conservative appeals court ruling on the abortion medication. why this could signal access to the drug might soon be changing. trickle down to you. right. joe biden would rather just stop those corporations from charging so damn much. capping the cost of drugs like insulin. cracking down on surprise medical bills and all those crazy junk fees. there's more work to do. tell the president to keep lowering costs for middle class families. so it's decided, we'll park even deeper into parking spaces so people think they're open. surprise. >> yeah. >> there's this "new yorker" profile that just broke today and there's a great little factoid in it when they were doing polling at republican focus groups, 70% of republican voters said they agreed with the statement covid lockdowns were bad. then if you asked -- if you said trump's covid lockdowns were bad, 70% of the voters disagreed. so it is purely a if trump's for it, we're for it kind of dynamic and that's a really hard thing to fight right now. and, you know, you can look at it in terms of the indictments, all of these things. if it's bad for trump, there's just a reflexive thing among a big chunk of american voters that say it's not true or it's not fair. >> vice president pence is also going to be on the debate stage. he weighed in on the first time today on trump's fourth indictment. take a listen. >> no one is above the law. and the president and all those implicated are entitled to the presumption of innocence that every american enjoys. >> i mean -- >> trying to have it both ways maybe? >> you think is this. >> yeah, especially because he was the one in danger on january 6th, he was the one whose former boss was calling to punish him if he didn't do the right thing, which was to overturn an election that he had no authority doing. i feel bad for mike pence. he has no lane, nowhere to go, no natural base. he seems to be someone that christian voters could get behind. >> but they're not. >> but they're not, exactly. so i don't know where he's going to see the opportunity to be the one that's left standing because this is what they're all -- right, this is what they're all hoping, all betting. the reason why you only have those three that i mentioned being the gcourageous ones to stand up against donald trump and what he means and all of his indictments, whereas the others are following his lead and enjoying indictmentum, right? and marjorie taylor green, in an interview with the "atlanta journal constitution" was asked about whether she would run for senate in 2026. she said, quote, i have not made up my mind whether i will do that or not. i have a lot of things to think about. am i going to be a part of president trump's cabinet, if he wins. is it possible i'll be vp? you're giggling. why are you giggling. i take that very seriously. you don't at all? >> i think it's entirely possible she could be in trump's cabinet. i don't think trump would pick her as a vp -- as a running mate, i should say. >> you can't rule it out. >> dare to dream. >> you can't rule it out either. >> she's won elections, unlike carrie lake, who is also talked about as being a vp for him. >> it's also a stupid time to be alive. graded on that you arcurve, i t trump thinks he needs somebody with that gravitas. he actually cares a lot about what people think, even though he doesn't. his political advisers are not >> no, not at all. >> some of you would expect would up end the juggernaut if he were going to light a match. >> up next, the appeals court ruling on the birth control drug and why this might be changing. first here is wolf blitzer with what's next in "the situation room." >> coming up, the newest information on the maui wildfire disaster as the death toll climbs above 100 and questions about the cause of the disaster clearly intensify. i'll ask him about all of that and more and we'll certainly discuss polresident biden's visit to hawaii. all that coming up right h heren "the situation room." ♪ i have type 2 diabetes, but i manage it well. ♪ ♪ jardiance ♪ ♪ it's a little pill with a big story to tell. ♪ ♪ i take once-daily jardiance, ♪ ♪ at each day's staaart. ♪ ♪ as time went on it was easy to seee. ♪ ♪ i'm lowering my a1c. ♪ jardiance works 24/7 in your body to flush out some sugar! and for adults with type 2 diabetes and known heart disease, jardiance can lower the risk of cardiovascular death, too. jardiance may cause serious side effects including ketoacidosis that may be fatal, dehydration, that can lead to sudden worsening of kidney function, and genital yeast or urinary tract infections. a rare, life-threatening bacterial infection in the skin of the perineum could occur. stop taking jardiance and call your doctor right away if you have symptoms of this infection, ketoacidosis, or an allergic reaction, and don't take it if you're on dialysis. taking jardiance with a sulfonylurea or insulin may cause low blood sugar. ♪ jardiance is really swell, ♪ ♪ the little pill with a big story to tell. ♪ as someone living with type 2 diabetes, i want to keep it real and talk about some risks. with type 2 diabetes you have up to 4 times greater risk of stroke, heart attack, or death. even at your a1c goal, you're still at risk ...which if ignored could bring you here... ...may put you in one of those... ...or even worse. too much?
