And as a grim reality sets in for survivors, some are question ing the states response before and how much was done to warn residents to get out. Plus Hunter Bidens legal troubles heat up. The Justice Department elevates the u. S. Attorney investigating his case to Special Counsel after plea talks fall apart. Republican president ial candidates descend on iowa. Today all eyes will be on the ah state fair as donald trump and ron desantis go head to head. Well have the latest as the candidates make their pitch to voters ahead of the crucial and critical Iowa Caucuses and the first president ial debate. And get ready for an Out Of This World show in the sky as a Meteor Shower is about to rain down. Well tell you when to look up. Good morning, everyone. Good to see you. Good to be here. Were going to begin with some grim news this morning from hawaii. Those devastating wildfires have now claimed at least 80 lives. Officials warn the death toll will likely rise in the coming days. Crews have not searched the inside of most of the buildings and its still unclear how many people are missing. The criticism is growing over how authorities handled things in the early stages. Many people say they were unaware of just how bad things had gotten until it was too late to leave. I fought wildfires in california. I was here yesterday when it flared up. I have never seen something ra vaj so fast. Newly released video shows just the horror of the fires as people tried to etc. Kiep. This video is from the coast guard. What youre seeing, it shows the view of the fire on wednesday. Crews were able to rescue 17 people who fled into the ocean to try to escape the spreading flames. Take a look at this tiktok video. It appears to show some of those desperate people in the water after they were forced to jump in to save themselves from the flames. Just imagine the panic that must have set in. Dense smoke and high winds created an incredibly chaotic and terrifying situation. Were going to walk somewhere over there by the beach. No, no, no, not like this. Not like this. Its hard to hear that. I cant even imagine what must have been going through their minds. Gloria pasmino is in honolulu this morning. What are the latest . Are we talking about Recovery Efforts now switching from rescue to recovery . Reporter well, it is absolutely devastate ing to hea those voices in that video. You can just feel the panic that people are feeling as they are fleeing for their lives. The images are absolutely devastating and the destruction just 80 miles to the west of here is finally coming in to focus. Now lets start with the the latest, as you mentioned. Crews that are equipped with cadaver dogs are in the process of searching many of the structures that have been destroyed. We know that a majority of the victims that have been found so far were found outside of many of these structures. Officials have said that they have yet to search through every building that has been burned to the ground there. So we are expecting sadly that death toll to increase in the next several hours. Now the fire has been contained by about 85 , but that does not mean that the danger is completely over. In fact, overnight, there was another brush fire that took place on the western part of the island. And that fire triggered evacuations overnight. We heard a short while ago that that fire has been completely contained and that evacuations are no longer mandatory. So some good news there, but its certainly not what residents are trying to hear. Yesterday lahaina opened up the only public road thats currently accessible to give residents an opportunity to get back. They are anxious to assess the damage, they are anxious to figure out whether their home was completely lost, to try to connect with family and loved one who is may still be there. But people began to pile up. There was a big traffic jam, and officials were forced to close the road back up again. So right now, theres a lot of frustration. Really people are losing patience. They are waiting for supplies and for help to arrive in the area. Now just to give you an idea of where i am, we are in honolulu standing at the convention center, which is right here behind me. This has been operating as a Support Center for advevacuees. More than 30,000 people were flown out of maui since wednesday. Some of them have arrived here in the last several days. And they have been trying to get to help to other flights to find accommodations as they get on their way. But as i mentioned, frustration beginning to build in the area. Especially for people who are in maui, in the western part of the island waiting for help. Now we have heard from multiple Witness Reports that they did not get a notification. There was no alarm system that was deployed in the area. Sirens, that usually are turned on when theres danger regarding weather, did not go off. That has prompted an investigation by the Attorney General here in hawaii, who said they are conducting a review of the decisions that officials made in the early hours just as the fire was beginning to burn. As you say, frustration builds, but also questions continue to mount about how this all took place. Gloria, thank you. And so many heartbreaking stories coming out of hawaii. Look at these satellite images. They showed a before and after of the wildfires, entire neighborhoods, homes, businesses, all destroyed. One photographer described how she lost her home in the wildfires. Listen. The wind is just howling. Were seeing roofs that are flying off. Trying to just get the car in. People are standing around looking. We heard it was a complete gridlock and werent going to be able to get out. We knew we had to try. There were people jumping into the ocean, swimming to boats to try to escape the fire. There were people on the ground crying, unsure where to go, not able to breathe because of the smoke. We were minutes away from that potentially being us. Its just unbelievable to know that so many people have been lost and we dont know where they are. The fact that people had to resort to jumping into the ocean just underscores the fact there was no time to respond from any of these survivors. As you heard, theres been growing criticism and a lot of questions over how authorities handle d the early moment ofts wildfires as flames quickly spread across the island. No Warning Signs were activated, which critics says cost untold lives. Joining me no is congressman from hawaii, really appreciate you joining us this morning. Lets talk about what were hearing from survivors saying there was no time for reaction. There were no outdoor Warning Sirens that they heard. On cnn last night, the general said hes pleading a comprehensive review about the decisions made before and after. We know Hurricane Dora was churning in the pacific days before whipping up winds on the island, knocking out. What is your reaction when you hear that there were no Warning Signs outdoors from state Emergency Management . I will tell you, growing up here in hawaii, anyone who lives here, every single month, we hear the Warning Sirens go off as a test. If you dont hear them in your neighborhoods, you know that something is wrong with them, so they get fixed. We rely on that system to keep us safe. You think of type of emergencies like wildfires, that should have been our first line of defense. These days, the alerts come on our cell phones, but we know there was no Cell Phone Coverage in the area. So any alerts that would have gone through that system were not received. We clearly did not plan for redundancies to keep people safe. Its not like Hurricane Force winds are known for dry brush. We saw this before. We did not learn our lesson from lane. T we underestimated the quickness of fire. We have got to make sure that we do better and learn from what happened here so that this never happens again. Do you think more lives could have been saved . Do you think some people may hbe held liable for this . I think theres a lot of questions that need to be asked. I will tell you this. Right now, my main concern is the fact that we literally have hundreds if not thousands still unac unaccounted for. We have on one hand the absolute duty to go in there and rescue. Rescue is the hope, but in many cases recover those that were casualties in this tragedy. There are tens of thousands that need to be supported by us right now. They dont have anything more than the clothes on their back, if thats what they were able to run out of the house with. They lost their homes, loved ones, livelihoods, theres a lot of questions that need to be answered. But right now, theres so many families and individuals in dire need of help. You can sense the frustration. You hear it in their voices. We have to understand the urgency in which they expect actions. We have to provide them the help. What is the latest on the rescue Recovery Erts right now and the challenges that crews there on the ground are facing . Are they able to get inside the wreckage . I know at last count, producers, if you can correct me if im wrong, i think at least 80 people is the death toll is where we stand right now. That number could rise, but that number is only counting for those found outside of buildings. At what point will crews get inside or through the wreckage . Im going to be going out there tomorrow and visiting with the fema director and other members of the team, the governor to really see the situation firsthand. Whats been difficult is the fire is not 100 contained. So we do have hot spots that we have to be aware of. These structures did burn to the ground, but not completely. These were old structures. Wooden structures, metal structures, so the integrity of the buildings need to be considered for safety. But thats the most concerning thing for us, the fact that most of the casualties have been found outside. We have yet to go inside, where we know for many individuals, they may not have been able to escape that quickly. This took place at night with howling winds. You can imagine the terror for many sheltering in place was probably what they thought was the best idea, and it was not. We heard so many jumping into the water in absolute fear. Clearly, the oceans around are going to have to be dredged and looked through to make sure that every individual that is lost is found. Thats fright account. Before we go, where are the evacueesing with taken . Not as many as we thought. We have had the assistance of bigger planes coming in. Folks are leaving that were here visiting the islands and they are getting back home. We hope that they will heal and take care of themselves. We know this was a nightmare for everyone involved. We do have shelters. Every island has opened themselves up to take in those that have been displaced by this tragedy. We have shelters on many islands. Im going to see folks tomorrow. As you can hear, Everyone Wants to go home. And how can you blame them. They want to see whats lost and we need to be there to help them as they rebuild that. Its going to take years. Im sorry for when youre going through. Thank you for taking the time. For more information about how you can help hawaii wildfire victims, go to cnn. On friday the office said negotiations to amend the plea deal reached an impasse and they were prepared to go to trial. Several republicans called this a sweetheart deal.
