Right now, new terrifying images from hawaii. Entire neighbors on fire, people fleeing to safety in a State Reckoning with a terrible tragedy. Right now it is all Hands On Deck as firefighters are battling flames that are still sweeping across maui and as Rescue Workers intensify their search for survivors. Right now at least 36 people are confirmed dead in Hawaii On Maui and there are Major Concerns that that death toll is going to rise even more. We did obtain new video. It is showing the Hawaii Army National guard helping here to fight the wildfires. Theyre using helicopters, dipping large buckets into the ocean, dropping that water on top of the flames. And here in the last hour, President Biden spoke about this ongoing situation, and he declared a major disaster in hawaii. Our prayers are with the people of hawaii, not just our prayers, every asset we have will be available to them and weve seen theyve seen their homes and businesses destroyed and some have lost loved ones. Its not over yet. Want to talk about this more with Kayani Rollins Fernandez who sits on the maui council. Thank you so much for joining us today. We know everything that youre dealing with both in terms of supporting your community and you personally, emotionally. You must be going through so much. How are you doing . How are those around you doing . We are safe, so we here are okay and for covering this and for having having a way to collect funds to support our community. Our community is in, you know, support mode right now to help those most affected, so those that are that have a stable home and are okay, are contributing however they can to help those that have been affect and have lost everything. We know that some of the worst winds have died down a little bit, but that there are still some winds there. Can you tell us what the status of the fires are and to what extent you know about firefighters making headway . Theyre doing their best to control flareups. The winds have been gusty, and it causes flareups after its been controlled, so its been really unpredictable. The winds have died down. The day that the entire town burned, we were unable to fly helicopters to help control the fire because of the 80mileperhour winds, and since then, we have been able to use helicopters to control the fire and that has helped tremendously. We do know that the president has declared a Disaster Declaration for your state. Do you think does your community have enough support right now from the state, but also from the federal government . What more do you need . We have a lot of Community Members whose houses did not burn down north of canna paley. Weve been collaborating and coordinating as much as possible. They dont have pour. They have running water. They were able to get diesel so they continue to have running water. They need ice because they dont have power. Theyll need food. Were trying to get them generators so they can have some power. They need a plan for those choosing to stay in the area because of the looting thats starting to happen and those Community Members, my colleague, Council Member Tamara Pullton is on the ground and trying to support her community there as much as possible with all of these supplies. Im sure so many people are turning to you right now. In terms of recognition from the rest of the country would you like to see a visit to maui from President Biden or perhaps from former president barack obama, who, of course, grew up in hawaii . I think both of those would be incredible help to get the attention from the world. Our community has been devastating. Lahaina was our kingdoms capital. We have lost so much. Its in ashes. Over 271 houses have been lost, businesses. The death count is continuing to rise. And, you know, i think whatever individuals that care about hawaii can do, were asking them to do everything in their power. The fire in hawaii has been fueled in part by these violent winds from a Hurricane Churning more than 800 miles offshore, and just hours ago, noaa upgraded its Forecast Warning warm oceans, setting records, will spur even more storms this season than usual. Meteorologist chad myers is in the cnn Weather Center for us. Tell us about these predictions, chad . Yeah. The atlantic Hurricane Season is now predicted to be above normal, where we have this tug of war between very warm water that should make bigger and more storms and then the el nino that should stir them up and break them apart. It will be all season long, just a tug of war. Whats going to be more important, the very warm water or that sheer that could tear those storms apart . An el nino year has more sheer. A hurricane likes to be by itself like my old cat. Doesnt want to be bothered. Leave me alone and dont knock me over with any of your winds. Ill do my best with this warm water. And the warm water now 2 to 4 degrees above normal in some spots and even warmer than that in some of the really develop mental zones for hurricanes. Weve had four names but the number will go up. We are just te beginning of the ramp to get up to the top when there are more storms in the water on these days than really almost all the days here and all the days there. Threats to kill the president as well as other democrats. That suspect was then shot and killed. A Law Enforcement source telling us that craig d. Robertson pointed a gun at agents as they tried to take him into custody. At this hour that fatal incident is under review by an fbi shooting Response Team that launched from the bureaus headquarters here in washington. Lets bring in cnn security correspondent josh campbell. Josh, this was not the first time that the fbi encountered this suspect . Thats right. This investigation began back in march. It was a social Media Company that observed some concerning material on their platform. They called the fbis National Threat Information Operation center and said look, this is troubling. The fbi then looked into that account. They eventually identified this suspect as the owner and put him under surveillance. They saw him wearing a donald trump hat, ar15 lapel pin, went up and made contact and confronted him about some of these posts. He originally told them look, this is part of some dream i had, these threatening posts online, and then got very belligerent with the agents told them to go away, dont come back unless you have a warrant. After that he began it posting, taunting the fbi. One of these posts which some might see as a threat, the fbi tried to interfere with my free speech right in my driveway. My. 45 acp, reference to ammunition, was ready to smoke them, posting at the fbi, if youre still watching, watching my account, i need to make sure i have a loaded handgun in case you swing by. That very concerning. What concerned the Secret Service and fbi was ahead of President Joe Bidens visit to utah yesterday where the suspect posted, read part of that, he allegedly wrote, i hear biden is coming to utah. A Law Enforcement source says he pointed a gun and one of the agents they werent just directed at the fbi and President Joe Biden but at prominent democrats across the country. What do we know . Well, alex, sources familiar with the matter tell us fani willis expects to make her presentation to the grand jury some time next week and the presentation is expected to take up until two days. Residents are describing the aftermath of the maui wildfires as a apocalyptic. You dont need to listen to them, just look at the pictures here. This is individual just in that shows how this Town Of Lahaina, the former capital of the kingdom, one of the most popular places on the island, has been burnt to the ground. At least 36 people are officially being counted as dead, but that number, officials worry, they worry it is going to rise at this point in time. There are more than 2,000 that are at this point in shelters. There are nearly 300 buildings that are impacted. Fires are still burning elsewhere on maui at this point in time. Here in the last hour, a survivor who lost both homes that he has in lahaina spoke to us, and he described how he had to run for his life as his neighborhood just went up in flames. We ran back to the house and had another 10 or 15 minutes before we knew we were going to be overtaken, and at that point we had to just jump in the car. Im sorry. It was it was rather traumatic. Joining us now is the Lieutenant Governor of hawaii, silvia luke. Thank you so much for being with us, Lieutenant Governor. Were so sorry for what maui is dealing with. This is what were seeing, ive never seen anything like it. I know that you have been briefed today. What information, what new information, can you share with us . Yeah. Weve been having regular briefings, and everything is changing. Its been its been just heartbreaking. Just to think that this all happened in the last basically two days, you know, this all started because of the impact of hurricane dora, but it wasnt a direct impact. Usually we would expect significant amount of rain and flooding. We this is very devastating because what resulted was significant amount of wildfires because of the already dry condition and wind gusts upwards of 75 to 85 miles per hour. You know, we are our hearts and prayers go out to individuals who have lost their Family Members, people who have lost their homes, businesses lost their all their investments in businesses, small businesses, the entire Town Of Lahaina was burned. We were able to do we were able to get an ariel view with the coast guard yesterday afternoon, and some parts, as you recognize on maui, are still burning. Lahaina is burnt down. It was just just deeply sad and just shocking to see an ariel view where once a vibrant town, it was a significant, historic area, a place that many visitors and local residents visited, and it was just ashes and black and its its horrific. Its horrific, as you see it there. We spoke with one survivor. I want to talk to you about the death toll because it is officially 36 at this point in time, but as weve been talking to people from the lahaina area, theyre telling us, you know, they have to go to certain little areas just to be able to text family or just to be able to call, and one survivor told us that he believes there are still hundreds that are missing. How concerned are you that the death toll is going to rise and maybe considerably . We are very concerned. You know, all these things just happened in the last few days, as of yesterday morning, the lives lost was six, and then by yesterday afternoon, late into the evening, it was confirmed 36. Search and rescue teams are still on the it ground looking for individuals that they can help, but at the same time, we are also getting calls from individuals in fact, we have gotten calls nationally, Family Members looking for individuals that they cannot connect, and the fact that we have coast guard helping, we have National Guard helping, were just so thankful for the federal support. This morning the president signed a National Declaration signifying that this is a disaster area, and with that we will get much more federal support. Clearly, as you recognize, the cell service is down, internet is down, because all the infrastructure is burnt down. Because of that, people are having a hard time making calls and they need to get to a Satellite Station or we need to actually go and do take a Satellite Phone from places to places just to connect people. This is justice so difficult and so tragic. You know, we have were sending individuals to help from other islands. Were deploying people, so this is just are you sending people in with Satellite Phones or with some sort of infrastructure that is going to provide a signal so that people can get the message out to Family Members or to other people outside of the affected area . Yes. Were work very closely with maui county and we have National Guard service, and they have Satellite Service and thats something that is already being done or more deployment will happen. Coast guard members were have been flown in and out almost regularly. We actually landed yesterday to pick up a bunch of individuals who had to rescue people from the ocean to escape the flames, and if it wasnt for the help of many of the federal officials, coast guard, especially, rescuing individuals, they took yesterday, they took a bunch of supplies, with mobile capability, so it has been a team effort and all the islands are pulling together to help this community. What do you need . We were talking to someone in the lahaina area and they said in addition to needing they need food, fuel, people were running out of fuel because the infrastructure is there, what else do you need . Yeah. You know, in addition to all the businesses, homes, we understand that even Dialysis Center was burnt down, so individual who needs medical attention are not able to get medical attention. We have Confirmation Gas Stations were burned and thats why we dont have fuel. If you go on the maui county, if you just go maui county website, they have a site available so people can make donations. We are delivering water, food, resources, but this is an all Hands On Deck, where the Community Needs great support. Overnight, they lost they lost everything. Yeah. It is the first step in a deal between the United States and iran that would include making 6 billion in frozen iranian funds more accessible to tehran. Siamak namazi, emad shargi, morad tahbaz, a fourth american not identified, they were moved from tehrans Notorious Evan Prison And The Fifth American who has not been publicly identified was under house arrest. Were joined now by someone who knows what it is like to be wrongfully detained at that very prison. Jason rezaian, who is Tehran Bureau chief when he was detained now a columnist for the washington post, he was held there for a year and a half between 2014 and 2016. Jason, thank you so much for joining us. What is your reaction to this news . Well, im cautiously optimistic, brianna. This is a day these families have been waiting for for a very long time, but as You Und Indic in the introduction theres still a long way to go. Any day free from the hell hole is a good thing. But, you know, they are far from completely free. They wont be free until theyve left iranian air space. I know all too well from my own experience that, you know, the last how the last days, you know, there can be complications in these cases. Im hopeful. At the same time, the tension and the anxiety for these Five Americans and their families is going to remain high until theyre all out of iranian air space. What about the deal itself that has been struck . Were understanding that 6 billion are going to be unfrozen. That comes with conditions that there will also be prisoners who are sent back to iran. What do you think of this deal that appears to be that is still, as you noted, A Work In Progress . Look, i think the details of the deal will become clearer in the days ahead and probably we wont know the full scope of it until its actually completed, but my understanding is that these are frozen funds that have been held by the korean government, subject to u. S. Sanctions, but not under u. S. Control, and that korea had every right to send them back to iran early or other countries who have had similar sanctionable accounts in their countries have given direct access to iran to those funds. Its not a gift to tehran or, you know, a payment from the u. S. Government, but, you know, aside from that, the question that folks keep asking me, you know, is the merits and the wisdom of doing these kinds of deals, and the reality, alex, is that if you dont do a deal, youre leaving americans behind. Unfortunately, this is a phenomenon that is affecting american citizens, citizens of many of our allied countries on an increasing level, and im hopeful that Biden Administration is doing more to cultivate deterrence to the horrible practice of taking hostages. Because you know, jason, you referred to evan prison as a hell hole and you know, especially in the case of one of these detainee, seven and a half years, you know what it is like to be there, words that you spoke here on cnn during an interview where you talked about some of the things you did to reclaim a little bit of control that you could, are something i remember frequently, and if you could speak a little bit about what they have been going through because its something that is going to change their lives forever.
