New developments in the gilgo beach murder investigations. Remains have been identified that were found nearly three decades ago. Donald trump on the Campaign Trail again after being indicted and what he is saying about the Defense Strategy again. And ukraine attacks a russian warship, and they used an unmanned sea drone to attack a seaship in the middle of the night. Im john berman with kate bolduan, and this is Cnn News Central. New information just released in the gilgo beach killings. Just a few minutes ago, the investigators said they have identified a victim previously known as fire island jane doe, and Officials Say that 34yearold Karen Vergata was working as an escort at the time of her disappearance in 1996. This is gruesome. Her feet and legs were found along fire island. 15 years later, her skull was discovered on long island proper in nassau county. Authorities discovered that the legs and skull belonged to the same person. Cnns jean casarez is with us now following the developments and a new victim named. And a family now knows, a missing Family Member what happened to her after 27 years. Karen vergata is her name, and we have that picture of her, and the precise time line is interesting, because it shows the furtherance of dna. Because Genetic Genealogy was not around in 1996 or 2011 or around until the Golden State Killer case came about in california several years ago, but it was February 1996 that karen went missing. It was April 20th Of 1996 remains were found on fire island, and it was her extreme tis, as you said, but not until 2011 was there a skull that was found during the gilgo beach investigation. Thats when they started to piecing it together to find out who this victim was. Lets listen to the press conference just minutes ago. In august of 2022, approximately six months after we formed this gilgo task force, dna profile suitable for genealogical comparison was developed from the remains of Karen Vergata. In september of 2022, the fbi was able to via a Genetic Genealogy review and identify fire island jane doe as Karen Vergata and using a buccal swab of a relative of Karen Vergata, we were definitively able to identify her. So, as you can see it this homicide is part of the gilgo beach investigation, and they will be looking at everyone, and this could be a separate investigation, but they have not excluded anyone at this point including Rex Heuermann. But to be clear, they did not include this to Rex Heuermann, and they were say at this point, it is no connection to Rex Heuermann. And no modus operandi, because it is some bloody, bloody scene somewhere on long island. And it is quite possible that there is, one person is being charged for one set of killings here, and this could be a completely separate thing. Jean casarez, so many new developments here, and thank you for helping us to understand it. And lets talk more about it. Joining us is retired officer cheryl dorsey, and also sargent, thank you for joining us, and now, that we have the identity of what has long been identified as fire island john doe, and now that we can identify one more victim, and talk about the investigative steps that were necessary to get to this point, and also what they do now. Well, we know that they used the genealogy from a Family Member to help to identify this particular victim, and so everything that is going to be done Going Forward with regards to this victim that is either connected to the suspect in custody is to rule out or affirm some kind of involvement. So it is going to be a mtatter f backtracking everything that they have done thus far with the victims connected to the suspect and see if there is any similar connection here. Sargent, jean casarez pointed out just important, and how important this testing of the Genealogy Review and testing and what it means nor investigatety efforts s and the advancements d what it means for investigative efforts of all types. It is amazing that you can find the connection of a Family Member, and who it could be, and then you submit these dna samples, and because of the advancements of the technology now, investigators make a correlation of the investigation of who i want to know who my next of kin is s and what part of the country i may have come from, and so it is very helpful, but it is also ultimately going to be a trial connected to this, a dueling experts, because while it is helpful, it is also problematic. And as john and jean were talking, the d. A. Did not link this dna to Rex Heuermann who is charged in connection to the other gilgo killings, and what should that mean, and should people read into this . We dont know if Rex Heuermann is connected, but, however to your point, they said that he is not the person at this time. What does it mean . To me, it means that there is another ancillary investigation, and there are other murders outside of the gilgo four. And think of the direct investigation of Rex Heuermann, and they had eyes on him since 2022 and relating to the charges and the three victims as a prime suspect, and who is to stay they were going to be other investigations on that front. To me, he is not excluded, but it is not sounding to me like they are ready to make a leap saying that he is not responsible for this victim identified today. Andmisty, what is quite interesting is to get a new dna swab from heuermann, and how important is that now . This is incredibly important, and intertwined to what we are talking about as far as the investigation unfolds. That is what is called the buccal swab. It is a common test that is done. And in order to do so in new york state, the prosecutors have to get a court order, and show that there is probable cause, and clear indication that they will get relative evidence from the swab. That is what needs to be answered. One prong already filled, he has been indicted. A test that is commonly done, and the question is if they will get relative evidence, and the prosecutors have laid it out that they are looking for dna to connect it to further crimes with which he is charged, but the other part is that he is connected to other crimes that we have not seen or other victims, and it is all intertwined, and important for the other prosecutors see that buccal swab. We will have much more on this as Cnn News Central continues. So much that i have not thought of. And so now, attorneys for donald trump will be in a washington, d. C. , courtroom when a judge is expected to set a trial date. The hearing is coming five days after the first republican president ial primary debate which we should note at this point, we dont expect donald trump to show up for that anyway. And cnns evan perez is joining us now, and this is about timing Going Forward, evan. Absolutely, john. Timing is important, because he is doing everything that he can to push it beyond the timing of the court, and they are the opposite wanting to get it done as quickly as possible. The judge has said that she wants to get it done as quickly as possible. And she wants to provide the briefs seven days apiece, and john lauro, the president s lawyer pushed back and said, look, a lot of discovery here, and a lot of information that the government has collected over 2 1 2 years of discovery and that they have to go through. And the trump team says it is all about free speech, and what the Biden Administration is doing or the Justice Department is doing is criminalizing the former president for his political speech. Listen to how bill barr took that argument, and of course, the response. Free speech does not give you the right to have a conspiracy. It is laughable. Tell me the fraud. What is fraudulent speech . Donald trump was out in the open petitioning the state legislatures, petitioning the courts. There was nothing fraudulent going on. This is absolutely protected First Amendment speech. For mr. Barr to say that, that is a complete and utter ignorance of what the basic law is with respect to freedom of speech. And john, just a few minutes ago, court told the trump team that if they want to opt out of the speedy trial, their right to a speedy trial, they have to say that in the next four days, so we are expecting again, another example of what the court and the judge are saying, we want to do this quickly, and speak now or hold your tongue. We will see that filing no doubt from the trump team in the next four days, and by the end of the month, we could have a trial date. Evan perez, great reporting. Thank you. Still, that is what we will a from donald trump, and he is set to speak at a alabama event, and so what will he say at that event. Some have said that he is irked after that event, and some said that he was referred to as mr. Trump and not mr. President. And now, alaina is outside of the bedminsters property, and we are hearing from him, and sources to him after the arraignment. We did, kate. You know, i think that donald trump is going to try and use the rhetoric that we know that he is going to use when addressing a room of supporters in public and appear defiant, and act like he is energized and ready to take on the charges. That is how he wants to portray himself, but i know that from my and behind that is not how he is feeling, because he is pissed off following arraignment, and he did not want to be in d. C. And he is embarrassed by all of this. He did not want another indictment, and these are the third indictment charges that he is facing, and he wants to be focused on the campaign and not these court appearances. And we had our great reporters inside of the room, and he appeared somber and arms crossed, and you could see it with the rhetoric that he likes to use, and the bravado that he likes to use, and you could see that sliding together in the remarks there, and i know that from covering donald trump for years now, he does try to compartmentalize, and yes, he is concerned behind the screens, but he will keep that at bay, but tonight, i believe he will refer back to that sort of rhetoric tonight. Kate . Thank you, alayna. And now, looking at convicting the former president and what is at stake. If trump is convicted in any of the case, it could turn things upside down, and lose the gop nomination, but if he is acquitted or a Hung Jury Results which could be understood by many that is the equivalent of an acquittal, i believe he could get the republican nomination and win the election on the back of it. That is former Trump National adviser and former ambassadon b tapper. Ambassador joining us now. Nice to have you on. And Russian Roulette is not a game that most people would not like to see now. And Russian Roulette, why is that worth it . Well, as i said in the beginning of the anesanswer wit jake, it is very important for people to find the justifiable charges that they find to be brought against somebody who is at stake is that people are fully informed about the people they are voting for. So it is a risk worth taking, and not withstanding that the risk is obviously unknown. What i was responding to in part is that ever since tuesday, the general exultation in some circumstances that people are generally in the rapture that trump had been indicted, and it is a prerequisite for legal proceedings, but we are a long way from the end. You know your way around the courtroom, and you have read the indictment or about the indictment in the last few days, and how would you go about prosecuting this case . What are the most important elements . Well, of all of the aspects that the indictment covers, i think that the strongest is the effort by trump to turn Vice President pence into a pawn of his strategy by exceeding beyond the wildest expectation, the president s role, and the counting of the Vice President s role, and you have had him on there talking about the weakness of the charge of fraud, and remember, there is another charge that go goes, and that is really epitomized by mike pence to get him to violate the efforts of his constitutional abilities, and i would focus on that, because that is the one that cuts through a lot of the nonsense that you are hearing about how this case is going after the First Amendment r rights, and that is not. But it is the pence part of the case is the strongest of all. Mr. Ambassador from the indictment, mr. Lauro said overnight, yes, donald trump asked mike pence to pause the counting of the electoral votes to go back to the legislature, and he just said that, that is what donald trump asked mike pence to do, and so by saying that, is he admitting to what is the most compelling case here . As they say, anything that you say can and will be used against you including lawyer. And so you have to be careful going on the tv representing a defendant in as much trouble as trump is. I think this is a lot of trouble, and quite a dramatic confrontation if they call mike pence to the stand, which i assume they would, and the Vice President repeats what he said to the grand jury. And that is one reason why this part of the case is so strong. Vice president is a man of integrity. I think that is perfectly obvious. You can say it is he saidhe said, but if it is mike pence against donald trump, almost any jury in the world would know mike pence is telling truth. And now, what about Mike Mccarthy defending donald trump who said after the indictment, that this is basically criminalizing the type of speech and type of things that perhaps al gore said after the 2000 election when he lost the election in 2004. You were there. Someone who worked on the recount for george w. Bush, and what do you say about this comparison . It is no comparison at all. I spent 33 wonderful days in florida after the election. I think that what gore did was a mistake. It was wrong on his part. Every recount of that election has shown that bush won, but what gore did was to follow the lawful procedures in florida to commence a recount, and to engage in litigation in the florida courts. He was ultimately defeated across the board, and he ultimately did concede, but the whole process showed although i did not like it, it was done, and on the Alternative Elector Set was a strategy that morphed into a strategy to subvert the election. So no doubt when you are given unlawful set of elections to overthrow, but when it is that you are going to violate the procedures to overturn the election it is not acceptable, and that is what donald trump did. So you are saying that if allegations by mike pence were not there, maybe if he were florida he could do it . I have the sweatshirt to prove it. And what about being here for Donald Trumps lawyers and the people defending him, he was acting on the advice of counsel, and he had lawyers telling him that these were strategies, and how compelling or problematic is this defense . Well, i think it is very problematic, and just because you are talking to a lawyer, it does not mean you can commit conspiracies or plan crimes, the Attorney Client privilege is not meant to cover up all of your conversations, and this issue has been litigated extensively in the district of columbia Federal Court over some of the january 6 cases, and what people have been calling the Crime Fraud Exception which prevents the crime privilege uphead. So when they say it is going to take so long to go to trial, i think that in that very court the controlling principle is that in considering what trump did here, they have already decided that the privilege does not obtain, and they will follow that rule very quickly. The attorneys for trump can file a 100page motion if they want, but the judge needs about 24 hours to decide to write up her opinion. Ambassador, you have dabbled with the thoughts of running for president in the past, and eventually, we will be hearing much more at length for those running for president , and do you think that ron desantis or tim scott or nikki haley needs to get up on the debate stage and say what donald trump did here was wrong . Absolutely. You wont beat donald trump for the republican nomination unless you beat donald trump. I think it means taking him on for his actions as president and afterward with the Document Issue in maralago, and it means to explain why he is not fit to be president , and not fit to be reelected by the republican party. You wont get the nomination by defeating the other 10, 12 candidates in the race, but you have to defeat donald trump, and that means to take him on directly. Sources in ukraine tell cnn that ukraine targeted a naval russian ship with a sea drone in black sea. This is video obtained by cnn and appears to show the Unmanned Drone approaches the ship. It is armed with explosives and hits ship. There were reportedly 100 russian sailor on board. They say they repelled the attack and no damage to the ship. But take a look at this. Another video has come n and it appears to show a ship clearly listing to the side and being towed in. A Satellite Image this morning showing a vessel closely resembled to the ship tied up at a dock at that port, but cnn is unable to verify the conclusively the identity of that ship. John . Let me show you roughly where this russian vessel was hit. This is crimea, and the port where it took place on the black sea. I will pull out a little more show you in relation to the entire black sea where it is, and that is of course not on the map, but you can see where it sits there. And now i am joined by steve anderson, a retired u. S. Army brigadier general, and so we are looking at the black sea, and the ability of the ukrainians to strike russian vessels inside of the russian territory, and what is the Strategic Value of that to keep the ukrainians from feeling safe there. Thank you, john. What it means is that there is no sanctuary of the russian ships in black sea, and there is nowhere that they cant hit. You recall when they took out the moscova and they took out a bridge about two weeks ago, and took out the marcova and so it is not surprising they have the technology to do this. Ukraine has been essentially the premier Intellectual Capital and Technology Development center for the soviets, and ukraine was behind the Development Like the antinov 124 helicopter. So the fact that they have this technology and can leverage it should not surprise anybody. They have been able to make these surfboards and use a joystick to steer it into a ship and make it blowup. They are leveraging the technology and use it against the russians. They have been doing it in moscow, and doing the same thing in this vital port in which 2 of the worlds oil goes through, and they have not been able to hit it. Often, we try not the ask the people in the military a political question, but it is involving a political poll. Cnn asked the American People if the u. S. Congress should authorize more funding for the war in ukraine, and 55 say, no. The u. S. Should not authorize more money for the battle in ukraine, but from the ukrainian perspective, they can see this funding, but what should that raise . Well, they are concerned of the election in 2024, and how the american support could change, and that is a very, very sad event if it were to occur. I dont believe that the Biden Administration has done a good job of selling need to make this fight. These people, the ukrainians are fighting for all of us, and not just themselves. The world order is going to change if this outcome goes against the ukrainians, and we have to step up and continue to recall that the United States was spending 300,000 a day fighting in iraq and afghanistan, and this is a far more important, and existential threat to our nation, and we have got to win. When i see the polls like that, it disappointments, and that is because the Biden Administration has not sold the war like they need to do. Thank you, brigadier general. Kate . Because the trend is there. And this is what the fed wants. The reality is that the feds medicine is if higher Interest Rates is designed to slow the economy, and that what they are seeing. This is the evidence. If you are looking over the last few months of the chart, you will see that we have had a succession of lower numbers. And what is even more interesting, the revisions are getting lower as well. So, as a result, the fed is seeing what they want to see. Will it prevent one more rise in Interest Rates, we will have to see. Why is that a question . Because it does not matter if we get one more or not, because we are at the terminal rate. And we will get the question before we find out. Well, what it does mean, what it does mean to sort of make it clear, this is going to last longer. The rates will stay higher for longer. But the job growth, and look, the dow is happy with it, and the stock market seems to like it. For exactly that reason, because it suggests they are done with the raising of the rates, and in particular the nasdaq, and look at the impressive gain there, and the Growth Stocks are growing, and amazon is up 10 . And another thing is that we are saying 187,000 below the analysts expectations. And so if the market, and if that is the bad news, and 187,000 jobs is bad news, then things are great. Exactly. This sunday the whole story with Anderson Cooper brings the latest installment of the series weed. Dr. Gupta examines how Life Changing it might be for older adults ages 55 and up. I truly do. 56yearold Robin Isavage wa more hez tapt. This is her first ride on the cannabis. I want to be more knowledgeable about the cannabis. Thats why i came today. Do you get to know the other people on the bus here . Yes. Have they become friends . We do. We have a cannabis club. We get together and talk about cannabis. Chief medical correspondent dr. Sanjay gupta is here with us now. You have been looking at this for a decade and the effects of cannabis on peoples bodies from children and now to older adults. What are you hearing from the older adults . You hear how many people are taking prescription meds, especially at that age. There were three main categories, which i refer to as the nuisances of age aing. And theres a lot of medications prescribed for this. Opioids, but also sleeping pills and antidepressants and things like that. So people are increasingly going to cannabis. This is the Fastest Growing demographic of users in the country. A the lot of it is to treat things like that. We had a map up a second ago of 38 states that allow medical marijuana to allow to be dispense d. When you look at this, is there some sort of standard medication or standard that is being used when it comes to cannabis . Thats probably the biggest challenge. This is still a schedule one substance, so this has been an uneven evolution. Even though you have 38 states, its still federally illegal. Which means that if people are watching right now saying, maybe i would think about this instead of an antidepressant or instead of an opioid. What strain, what dose, how to get it recommended, its still a real challenge for people. And thats the problem when we have something that is federally illegal, but the people have spoken at the stvel to get more accessible. Its changing, but its pretty slow.
