good evening, everyone. welcome to "cnn tonight." lots of news on the legal cases against former president trump. in georgia, the fulton county district attorney, who is directing efforts of overturning joe biden's victory, says she is ready to make a charging decision. and in florida, the property manager making his appearance in a courtroom today. this is to look at efforts to conceal classified documents. he's accused of obstruction of justice and making false statements to the fbi. i'll talk to a strategist who says ron desantis is a flawed candidate. and the biden family news. president biden acknowledging his seventh grandchild for the first time. >> i have seven grandkids, four or five of them old enough to talk on the phone. every day, i text or call them. >> we'll find out if biden will suffer repercussions for delay in acknowledging hunter's 4-year-old daughter. and are donald trump's legal troubles putting iting a dent support. i sit down with a group of republican voters to find out. if he is in the middle of a trial when the general election comes up, or if somehow is con convicted, would you still vote for him? their answers in a moment. let's begin with the 2024 ce donald trump is crushing his competition in theoles, despite his legal problems. the latest poll has trump at 54%. his closest challenger, ron desantis is at 17%. why is desantis struggling to make a dent in the trump lead? in a moment, i'll ask the republican strategist that was heading up the desantis action committee but blames the missteps.for the campaign many republican voters were not fans of ron desantis' war on woke. only 48% of gop votersill support a candidate that fights corporations that support so-called woke ideology. 52% want a candidate that stays out of what businesses do or do not support. desantis has gone to battle with multiple companies, including disney, bud light, norwegian cruises, u.s. sugar and big tick. joining me now, former reagan political chief adviser, jim rollins, who stepped down from a pro-desantis pac, after coming to the conclusion that desantis is a flawed candidate. >> thanks for having me here. >> what makes him flawed? >> being a candidate out in iowa, new hampshire, presidential campaigns are totally different. it's about going out and talking to people. not about preaching to people. we have to talk to him. instead of going out, and preaching the culture value to iowa, you should say, tell us about your school system. what do you want? culture just is not the key thing. what's the key thing there, farming. the proper cost of wheat, corn, gas, all those things. and political people, particularly in places like iowa and new hampshire, they expect you to come out and listen to them. >> did you tell him that? did you share your concerns? >> i shared with some on staff. i was involved on super pac. we can't have coordination and can't talk. i'm not sure he would listen to what i told him. he has good, smart people around him. i think it's him. and everybody who told me since, i was involved. and i travel to israel, members of congress. never said a word. he's not a natural candidate. i have nothing against him as a governor. we have great governors who run for president. i don't think he's a guy that's going to beat trump. trump at this point, stronger as he ever has been. >> he's not a people person. >> not a people person. >> is he open to constructive criticism? >> no. what i hear, no. he makes dumb moves. he raised a lot of money early on. you don't lay off a third of your staff before you announce in iowa. you wait a couple weeks. you spread them out. do something with them. you send them hope. you don't arrive, going to run in iowa, i haven't been managing my budget, i have to lay off one-third of my people. this is the job you're running for, about management. for me, he's not a bad guy. a good guy. a lot of good guys run for the presidency. you're not going to beat trump. >> was that the moment that made you not want to be involved anymore? >> no. it was a big part of it. i heard rumblings before that the staff was being blamed for it. the candidates that have done well, in iowa and new hampshire, people like ronald reagan, is personal. barack obama, bill clinton. and it's not about how good governors they were. it's how they relate to people. >> who do you support now? >> i support the nominee. >> even donald trump? you had left working with donald trump? >> yes. the tragedy of donald trump is that if donald trump would have walked away the day after the election, and basically said, okay, i'm going to challenge everything, and when i lose the challenges, if i do, i will run against again, he would be 30 points ahead. the reality is, they don't like what he has done as an ex-president. no one has become a historian. i've been a presidential scholar at hofstra. and i've studied every presidency many times and taught the courses. there's never been a presidency like trump's. and never going to be a campaign like this one. >> if not desantis, who is going to challenge trump? >> i don't know if anybody will challenge trump? the most that has criticized trump is christie. at the end of the day, i think trump's base is strong. it stays above 50%. equally as important, his campaign is better than it was four years ago, two years ago. on the republican side, it's winner-take-all. if he gets 50% in california, all of the california delegates. that's more than all of the delegates we're talking about in iowa and new hampshire. my sense is they're running a smarter campaign. >> since you described he's a sore loser, why would you support him as the nominee? >> i'm a republican. and i've been a republican for 50 years. and i believe the philosophies i'm for stronger government. and strong national defense, supporting cops. the things we used to do. and things that are important to the country. thanks for being here. >> a lot to talk about. let's bring in political commentator, anna kna navarro, watergate prosecutor, john sell. great to have you here tonight. here's what he said tonight, ed rollins criticism. >> when i hear about a culture war, standing up for the rights of parents, standing up for the well-being of children, that's not culture war. that's central to the lives tens of millions of people throughout this country. it's right to impose indoctrination in the schools. and i reject being in iowa and new hampshire that people don't think those are important. they do think those are important. >> your thoughts? he is sticking with the culture wars. >> he has to stick with it. it's the only thing he has. that's his one-hit, woke, woke, woke. today, he tried to talk about the economy. if he had started with the economy, if he made the economy his banner issue, he might be in better shape. he goes for anti-wokeness. he has created a environment in florida. you live in florida. i live in florida. one ignorant parent can get a book banned. he created an environment where mickey mouse is now a criminal. even black republicans are telling him to stop defending. when you pick a fight with defendants of slaves like the african-american congressmen from florida, republican, maybe you're on the wrong path here. >> do you think that ron desantis is losing steam? and do you think someone else will pick it up? >> the issue with governor desantis is always not what you do, how you do it. not what you say, how you say it. yes. he is correct, there's a large, robust population of republicans that are concerned about the cultural issues. what ed is trying to nudge him towards, now that he's no longer with the pac, is the reality facing most americans, they don't want joe biden to be their president anymore. and if you're going to make a case to republican primary voters, you should be talking about the deficiencies of the presidency, the economy, talking about the schools that are not teaching our children. talking about the fact we have a migrant crisis that goes unchecked. we should be talk about is there actual doctrine from the biden administration as it relates to ukraine. and what would your doctrine be in light of the billions of dollars not being spent at home. there's a host of issues that are ripe for the taking. if the government would go down that path. i think, there's a lot of people who, in their own way, are trying to nudge the governor towards a path that's better suited if his plan is to overtake president trump. >> we have heard donald trump's opponents, many in the gop field, begin to get more aggressive about criticizing donald trump. here's what they've recently said this week. >> by the time we get on the debate stage on august 23rd, the front-runner will be out on bail, in four different jurisdictions. >> if these accusations are true, it's incredibly dangerous to our national security. >> when he hits me with the juvenile insults, i think it helps me. it's a reminder why millions of voters won't vote for him going forward. >> donald trump is not running to make america great again. donald trump is running to stay out of prison. >> what do you see happening here? >> "the new york times" study said there's 37% of voters that are in the maga base. 63 is greater than 37. there's a majority of republicans not in that space. and maybe there's six months or three months for the party to figure out who can be the alternative. >> they are not coalescing around anyone else? >> they are not. >> from the other side of the aisle, there's some democrats that are relishing the opportunity to have donald trump be the nominee. he's a weak dom nominee in the general election. this is playingdynamite. it's terrifying to consider the campaign, let alone of the possibility of him becoming president, or whatever he would become after he abolishing the checks and balances of our government. i don't want to say i'm optimistic. but it is the case that for desantis to run to the right of trump, the anti-woke thing, there is a large constituency. >> back to trump's legal problems in georgia today, the fulton county d.a. says she will be announcing a charging decision, she says, the work is accomplished. what is she waiting for? >> months ago, she said i'm going to make a charging decision. clear the decks. clear the courthouse. they indicted former president trump in miami. the big mobs didn't turn it. i'm concerned that the feds and georgia are going to step on toes. i don't know why she makes announcements. bring charges or close it. >> trump's co-defendant in the classified documents case in mar-a-lago, was indicted for the first time today. now that the new trial is added, does that push it beyond may? >> it has to. and jack smith actually brought this delay on by bringing the new case. when you have a new defendant, he hasn't been arraigned, he doesn't have florida counsel. maybe some method to the madness. maybe just maybe, if the january 6th case is brought tomorrow, like we're thinking, and if the classified document case is put off, that might bring a case for the washington, d.c. judge to set a new case. he's going to be presumed innocent and it will protect him. two, is a strategy of delay. every defendant that he uses. and the third is the money. the big pac. the $40 million or so. and money makes a difference. >> thank you. we're going to talk about that very thing. donald trump's political action committee spending $40 million on his legal fees this year alone. so, next, i sit down with this group of gop voters to ask what they think of trump's legal problems. me out of the bed? baby, only on game nights. you know you are retired right? am i? ya! save up to $500 on the new sleep number® smart bed. plus, 60 month financing on most smart beds. shop now only at sleep number®. (man) mm, hey, honey. looks like my to-do list grew. "paint the bathroom, give baxter a bath, get life insurance," hm. i have a few minutes. i can do that now. oh, that fast? remember that colonial penn ad? i called and i got information. they sent the simple form i need to apply. all i do is fill it out and send it back. well, that sounds too easy! >> aheadlines are swirling that the former president's troubles with the law, many troubles, has his political action committee, the save america pac, on a massive, massive spending spree, $40 million so far this year. that's how much the pac has spent on legal fees. so much, that "the new york times" first reported the pac gave 60 million the a super pac supporting trump. and now, wants that money back by comparison. the federal election commission showed save america spent less that for lawyers in all of 2022. >> all of the millions just for donald trump's defense? >> no. it's not all just for him. with so many cases coming down on trump, his team is creating a legal defense fund to help defend some of the people who have worked with him and have also come under legal scrutiny. for example, the two men you mentioned a minute ago. the department of justice has accused them, along with trump, to delete security camera footage in the classified documents case. walter nada and carlos alvaro. >> where is the xhun cmoney coming from? >> it's coming from small donors. the team says it's fine to spend the money fighting what trump calls political persecution of to protect the innocent people and prevent their lives from being destroyed, the leadership pac contributed to the legal fees to ensure they have representation against unlawful harassment. legal and political analysts are raising eyebrows over trump's team paying the bills of some who might be wanted as witnesses against the former president. >> tom, thank you very much. >> you're welcome. so, we wondered how republican voters feel about trump's political pac spending millions or his legal problems rather than on the campaign. we gathered a small group together tonight to ask them. none of these voters say trump is their first choice in the primary. but wait until you hear what they say about the general election. here's our pulse of the people. with this news that donald trump's super pac has spent $40 million at least on his legal bills, show of hands, how many of you are bothered by that? ryan, tell me your thoughts. >> $40 million is a huge sum of money. his bucket for the campaign has a giant hole in it. that's a problem from a strategic standpoint. i think it's going to hurt pym. >> jack, your thoughts? >> if you donate to president trump and his campaign, 10% of that money is going to that super pac. the small donors that are donating to the campaign, think it's going to fund political activity, that's where i have the problem with. >> governor chris christie, one of trump's competitors, calls it disgraceful. basically, his point is that, you know, donald trump is a billionaire. and why can't he pay for his own legal fees? >> i don't have a problem with trump using campaign donation for his legal defense fund, because his legal issues have everything to do with his re-election bid. >> do any of you think this will hurt him? that his legal entanglements will hurt him in the general election? >> it will hurt him. it will be a side show. it will be a constant distraction. it's a distraction that's purposeful. his legal problems started when he went down the escalator. and it will continue until he gives up political office and any ambitions of that. >> is any of this his fault? has he been reckless with the law and the boundaries? >> i think we have to wait for information to come out there. anyone is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. >> how many of you would have been upset if barack obama had taken boxes of classified documents home with him and when the national archives realized it, moved them around. >> joe biden tookdocuments. >> and gave them back. when the national archives asked for them, gave them back. >> is there no distinction of giving them back or obstruction of giving them back. is there no distinction? >> the fbi told donald trump to add a lock on his safe. it was in one location. on the hillary clinton stuff, there was evidence it was likely hacked by the russians and the chinese. >> that's not true. the fbi decided her server was not hacked. >> it was her personal server. >> which is more secure? the clinton's server they built in their home, or the cardboard box in the public bathroom next to the toilet in mar-a-lago? >> that's a good point. i don't have an answer. >> here's my last question. if he is in the middle of a trial at the time that the election, the general election comes up in 2024. or let's say, somehow, he's been convicted, would you still vote for him? show of hands? okay. all of you would vote for him even if he were convicted of a crime. >> it would depend on who his v.p. is. >> i believe that america cannot afford another four years of president biden, and vice president harris. you have to pick one of those two options. i cannot see myself voting for joe biden. >> the cause is greater than the man. ultimately, the cause is furthering a conservative governance in the united states. there's probably no one else that can more keenly feel the result officials what the deep state has done to our institution, our once-proud institutions, like the fbi or doj. >> i'm not planning to vote for donald trump. and i think it's time to move on from him. put these legal issues aside. go for somebody younger and fresh, new blood. trump had his chance. i think it's time to go for another candidate who can drain the swamp and unite the country. >> i'm back with ana, jay, joe and john. ana, i'm fascinated when i talk to folks outside of manhattan and -- jack is in new york. to hear what the rest of the country is thinking. your thoughts when you hear this? >> i know some of these people who think the same way. some of them are in my family. trump has been effective in portraying his christ-like complex. talking about how he is taking this for them. he is suffering for them. his sacrifice for them. and there's people who genuinely believe, despite the fact there is video, audio and hard evidence documents, they don't believe their eyes. they don't believe that they see. it is cult-like behavior. we saw this from republicans already. let's not gore get that a bunch of conservative christian republicans voted for trump after hearing him say in audio he had sexually assaulted a woman. they didn't care. they care about the supreme court. and he delivered. and they remember that. >> what i heard from these guys wasn't they don't believe what's happening to trump. they think that democrats have done the same thing. >> i had a different take on those three voters. again, i find myself -- i'm a pessimist. i think the glass is half-empty and the water is evaporating. >> the water is evaporating. it is 100 degrees in florida. >> that's right. these are reflective counts. some of the stuff trump said he would do when made president, will give some of the voters pause. ignores congressional mandates. wiping out administrative agencies. not just the d.oj, but a number of agencies. these are authoritarian moves. we're not in the general election. i took a note of hope from those voters said. they weren't in -- i agree, the 37%. this is a cult-like behavior. and everyone should read "the cult of donald trump" and understand what is going on. it felt to me like these weren't the true believers. these are people who support is issues -- >> if there were other people in the primary. >> if the situation were reversed, joe biden might not be my candidate of choice. but i will vote for him because i believe in the values he stands for. when it becomes more clear, setting aside the legal issues. when we see the plan for trump and america, reasonable conservatives will be horrified. >> joe, quickly. >> there's a lot of republicans who recognize there's no conservative case for joe biden. there's a lot of republicans who believe if you look at what trump is proposing from a policy standpoint, versus what the biden administration has put forth, there is no comparison. we should be disaviewed of notions that joe biden will lead from the center. it's difficult to put the money aside. there are people that recognize to that panel's point, the legal is linked with the politics, irrespective if you think some of it might have been brought on by the president himself. >> and quickly, is there any federal election commission problem with donald trump's pac paying for legal beals? bills? >> it's not illegal. but an ethical lawyer says, my obligation is to you, not to the person paying, it's fine. if you're buying silence, it's not only unethical but obstruction. >> thank you very much. a first for president biden. acknowledging hunter biden's 4-year-old daughter. what took so long? that's next. lth, i choose airborne. it has an unbeatable amount of vitamin c, plus a unique blend of immune focused ingredients to turn up our immune support. airborne president biden and the first lady publicly acknowledging their seventh grandchild for the fst time. the 4-year-old girl named navy is the daughter of hunter bide in a statement put out friday, biden said, quote, our son, hunter, and navy's mother, london, are working together to foster a relationrelationship, best interests of her daughter. this is not a political issue. it is a family matter. jill and i want what is best for the family, including navy. he mentioned navy in a podcast released earlier today. >> i have seven grandkids, four of them -- five of them old enough to talk on the phone. i text them or call them. being there is important and makes a difference, i think, knowing that someone is going to be there for you. just to listen, just to hold you. just to hug you. >> my panel is back. jay, as our resident rabbi, man of the cloth, is it a problem that it took joe biden four years to acknowledge navy? >> i take a different view. speaking of a rabbi, the reaction to christian conservatives, to the entire constellation of issues around hunter biden. this is a man who has suffered and is broken and has struggled with addiction and suffered with loss i never experienced on a magnitude i can't understand. and the fact this person is being -- >> meaning his mother, his sister, his brother, early, original loss. >> exactly. >> the fact this is leading the news, this is the biggest scandal, is out of proportion. there were misdeeds, trying to take a plea deal around some of them. let he who cast the first stone? >> is it a problem politically for him, joe biden? >> i don't think it's a problem, politically. i think people understand. most people understand there was a legal case going on. now that's over, we're going to work towards this new state. you can't argue with the fact that joe biden has been there, for his kids and his grandkids. this is a man who a senator took a train back and forth, between washington and delaware, every, single day. >> not this grandchild. this grandchild -- >> they were in a custody battle. they were fighting over money. it was a legal issue. that child is going to read that when she gets older. i trust his love of family will supersede the legal and the political. and he really does want the best for his children. that's what he wanted for the other ones. he's been there for the grandchildren that lost their father. beau's children. and has been there for hunter's children, when hunter was, you know, was having all those issues. for the bad issues he did and took in the thoroes of addictio. >> in a world we weren't talking about all things president trump, this would be a character issue for joe biden. it would be a character issue for his presidency. if you're talking about we don't know if hunter is the father. we make everything to know that this child does not feel they are ostracized. and the nature of how this proceeding unraveled was because of the fact they felt as if they had been isolated, and unacknowledged. pushed to the side, treated as less than. if you want to talk about joe biden and everything that hunter has been through, if anything, that should speak to them if having a greater level of compassion than less than. will it be a deciding issue? no. when it comes to american politics, the high ground has been obliterated. it becomes a winner-take-all issue here. we should care about it. if you're going back to the whole, my word as a biden thing, where all of a sudden, that has become the unimpeachable word of this president, not only for here, but also for the legal issues that hunter is dealing with, the stuff with china, we don't have to talk about, all of it comes back to integrity. he's supposed to be the integrity candidate. this should impugn that. >> thanks for the perspectives. barbie is experiencing a renai renaissance. if a male radio host calls a reporter barbie, is that grounds to lose his job? (soft music) a radio host is out of a job after calling a sports reporter barbie. here is don ingiron mow talking about a reporter. >> i think she's -- i think she's a sportscaster at channel 9. >> yeah. >> i thought she was a cheerleader. >> the statement, tells cnn, objectifying women is harmful and disrespectful. we heard from the washington commanders they were addressin the situation directly with i heart radio. i heart radio, sending a statement confirming the firing. saying, we take this matter seriously and it does not align with our core values. a commanders spokesperson added, we were confident that i heart radio addressed this swiftly and are pleased they did. don geronimo commented he will not be commenting right now. rachel, it's great to see you. then, i heard the audio. >> not so much. >> what was your reaction? particularly how fast the radio station responded? >> i was really bummed to hear it. aren't we past this? aren't we done with this? of course, we're not. and that's disappointing. you heard the way he talked about her, right? h she's a chick. thought she was a cheerleader. this is a working journalist. this is a person who came to work that day. it's frustrating when you hear this stuff, because we ask women you tell people, you want to be tv-ready. you want to be presentable. and you criticize her for looking attractive. that's a tough position to put a woman in. and the barbie movie you refer to, addresses this. women are criticized if they do look like that. it's frustrating. if you're working hard to have respectability, to show that you know your stuff. to have someone who is a voice of the team. that's what he was, a team broadcaster. say these things about you. r and you have to be a partner to someone demeaning you. i'm happy that everyone saw this for what it was. >> i knew you would have a perspective on this. y i am guessing you have personal experience with this. >> i have been called sideline barbie. i grew up in the washington wug a washington, d.c. area. he has a history of lewd comments about women. that's part of the context that's missing from some of the national stories here. this wasn't done in a vacuum. he wasn't let go in a vacuum. not only does he have a personal victory. the team has a history of what they're battling with. the washington football team just changed hands a moment ago. it was owned for 24 years by dan snyder, who had so many problems with women. the congress opened an investigation, into a team. that's the level it reached. to have an environment in the office, where women were groped. don't sit near him if he is going to grope you. the women were told to wear something tight and cute. and what is most upsetting is a video that was put together for the team by the lead broadcasters. and that comes to play for dan snyder's accusement, that was be behind the calendar shoot. the behind-the-scenes shoot caught some of the women changing. and the team broadcaster had the outtakes, the good bits of the women changing and things like that and put them together in a video for his amusement and the team owners' amusement. this is the history they are dealing with. the bottom of this comment. once this happened, the team, especially with new ownership, felt it had to take actions. you can see, why they did. >> rachel, it is helpful to have that context. the people appreciate it as a comment or a joke. it's h helpful to know all of t. up next, another loss for elon musk. we're going to tell you what happened to the giant flashing "x" sign he put up on his headquarters. baby i hear one every night. every night. okay. i'll work on that. save up to $500 on the new sleep number® smart bed. plus, 60 month financing on most smart beds. shop now only at sleep number®. we planned well for retirement, but i wish we had more cash. you think those two have any idea? that they can sell their life insurance policy for cash? so they're basically sitting on a goldmine? i don't think they have a clue. that's crazy! well, not everyone knows coventry's helped thousands of people sell their policies for cash. even term policies. i can't believe they're just sitting up there! sitting on all this cash. if you own a life insurance policy of $100,000 or more, you can sell all or part of it to coventry. even a term policy. for cash, or a combination of cash and coverage, with no future premiums. someone needs to tell them, that they're sitting on a goldmine, and you have no idea! hey, guys! you're sitting on a goldmine! come on, guys! do you hear that? i don't hear anything anymore. find out if you're sitting on a goldmine. call coventry direct today at the number on your screen, or visit coventrydirect.com.
