Because we see some of ourselves. We see each other. We see each other. So you go from the talk shows, mash that up with the crazy theatrics that can happen in the world, and you end up with these docuseries that capture the attention of the entire nation. You have competition series. You guys are already fierce. Were gonna make you Fingers Snapping fierce. [kendra] and then you have true crime, and the shows following people on their everyday lives. Black, Unscripted Television launches the superstars. My name is cardi b, and im from the bronx. Its allowing, frankly, a lot of people of color who would get turned down at the gates Into Hollywood to show off their personalities. Well, well, look at you. Nobody knew that reality tv would be as big as it is. Bring out the nick cannon. This genres like a guilty pleasure. [contestant] ooh, flav, can i get a chance . Unscripted shows are really important to tackle those topics considered taboo. Im the only polyamorous person, and i have the least sex Jada Laughing out of all of my friends. It gets to something very primal about stories. And its not fair. Archetypes and the way characters work in our imaginations. What has hurt you so bad . And it has changed the actual world. upbeat music black talk shows are really important when youre looking at the genealogy of Reality Television. I think that people dont understand that when you say unscripted, its not just reality tv. The talk shows that we all grew up on, they started it all. And thats how reality tv spawned into what we know it to be today. Arsenio, you are black. crowd laughs in the early 80s, the Talk Show Landscape was very vanilla. You had donahue, you had sally jesse raphael, something was missing when it came to daytime talk. Then there was this lady that came outta chicago. She heavy set, dark skin, sister. Im Oprah Winfrey, and welcome to the very First National Oprah Winfrey show. Audience Cheers oprah. Oprah . What is the oprah . What is, who is this lady . Oprah was the pioneer, right . The precursor. During the 80s, reaganomics, the height of the war on drugs, oprah was not just a calming presence, but a clarifying presence. When she came on the scene, there really wasnt anybody who looked like her, who did the things that she did, who was really funny, who wasnt afraid to cry, who talked about her life. But two things have bugged me for years. The first, my thighs. The second, my love life. So today, how to find a husband, how to find a wife. Oprah was probably the starting point of people coming On Television and allowing themselves to be super vulnerable. It all started with the talk show. She brings these big thinkers who can give you different perspectives on how to get through life. If you dont have a test, you wont have a testimony. And so when you have a challenge. There is no more powerful speaker, or person, to sit across from than miss Oprah Winfrey. Weve never seen you behave this way before. I know. [oprah] have you ever felt this way before . Audience Cheers if you would go on her show with a book, with any type of product, it would instantly sell. And they started calling it the oprah effect. One day, she was doing a show about hamburgers and she simply said, im never eating another hamburger again. And when she said that, the stock market went down. What, oprah said it . cause thats the oprah effect. If you look at the people that oprah spawned and oprah gave us iyanla. And now you look at tamron hall, all the different people whove come behind. She put these people on the map and it was the same with people like montel williams. I was the first African American male to host a talk show during the daytime in his own name. There were several Station Managers across the country that said to our Syndication Team that, i will never have a black man on our station. I had to convince these stations that i would not be that threatening. Montel was this black man who had checked every box that mainstream america would want to check. He had that kind of dignity. We talked about things that nobody in this country was willing to have a discussion about. We are here to figure out why things happen and lets come up with solutions. Montel was vulnerable. He was transparent. He would cry. And black men actually dont cry enough. I cant even imagine what life is like for you. I think that was his secret to success. We did heavy topics, but we also did fun topics. Over the 17 years that it ran, one of the proudest things to me is having a young person walk up to me today and say, its because of you that i went to school. Well be back right after this. Audience Claps we did things that give people that little spark or that little laugh when they came home. Oprah plans to end her syndicated talk show in 2011. Ive decided that next season, season 25, will be the last season of the Oprah Winfrey show. When oprah left the talk show scene, there was a massive void. She paved the way for tyra banks and Queen Latifah to try out the talk show genre. Can i put my sexy face on . [audience member] oh yeah. Audience Screaming how you doing ladies gentlemen . My name is kevin hart. It was our opportunity to see the conversations that we were having at home, On Television. And lets take it even further. Wendy williams had a massively popular radio show and she parlayed that into a very successful talk show in 2008. Audience Cheering how you doing . [audience] how you doing . Im doing okay. Lets get started. Its time for hot topics. Come on. How you doing . The Wendy Williams hot topics, lord bless you if you end up in them. 14,000. You all better watch what you go and fund somebody. audience laughs she has made such a mark on media period, especially as a black woman in media. So many of our iconic media moguls, talk show hosts, transcend black audiences. And so were all tuning in. Welcome to the real folks love panel shows because people also wanna hear different opinions. Shows like the view and the real, shows where women are having candid conversations. Somebody sitting at that table is going to represent me. The real is four women of color. We all have different perspectives. We all have different ideas about what we think our community should be about. To be able to also talk about black joy, it was really important because i think sometimes when people see black people, all they think about is black trauma. Thats not the purpose of the real. That was never the purpose. It was to lean into the black culture and really recognize the black joy. Hey facebook family, id like to introduce you to two of the most important women in my life, my mother and my daughter. I was the first guest on the Red Table Talk. So i was like, what it is the Red Table Talk . And it was a love fest. It was real sisterhood and real fellowship. What is so beautiful about Red Table Talk is that it is this multigenerational format. Youve got willow. Youve got jada. Youve got her mother. And theyre having these important conversations about what it means to be black in america, what it means to be a black woman in america, but then more than that, what it means to be a family period. You and i were going a through very difficult time. Yeah. And then, i got into a different kind of entanglement. What was the word they used . It was the. [mero] entanglement. Entanglement. Yeah. Theyre just staring at each other across the table. Yo, yo, and will looked like and im like, we should not be watching this. This should be happening without cameras, but. This should be happening in Couples Therapy in privacy with hipaa laws in place. You know what i mean . When you, as a people, demonize certain topics, they persist. And Red Table Talk seeks to help dissolve some of those untouchable topics, and give us a real honest platform and space to be human. Theres something cathartic about doing Unscripted Television, doing reality. There was this element of, lets dissect whats happening in your life and figure out a path forward, a path to fixing it. Thats part of the problem. Get off the blackwhite thing its a reality. Im sick of it. Against the backdrop of the rodney king verdict, kevin powell and heather b were tasked with talking through, and really explaining racism, to their roommates in the house. This wasnt like a bunch of experts on a pbs show. This was real people talking about serious issues in a way that you dont often hear on tv. The docuseries is born. The real world brought viewers in that were not represented On Television. White women benefited for the Civil Rights Movement more than black people. Look it up. Then im the lucky one. You are. Kevin powell is an activist. Kevin powell fights for black rights and black power. And so to have him on that first season, talking about those issues, right at the time that the rodney king situation was going on, you couldnt have asked for a better setup. [woman] why do you get so close . Will you listen . Black people are emotional. And kevin powell is kind of giving it straight to people, with no chaser. Hes telling em the truth. Truth that a lot of people werent ready for. And let me tell you something about you. There was a lot going on during my season of The Real World. Ive made a decision that im going to terminate the pregnancy. I was very open about discussing having an abortion On Television. If people are going to be 100, as they say, and really have dialogue and conversations in an authentic and transparent way, then absolutely unscripted tv is the perfect platform for it because thats what people are watching. [announcer] extra, extra, heres the latest. In 2004, we had college hill from bet, which was in a way, a bit of a remix to The Real World, but this time it focused on black students. Almost two decades ago, there were no follow docs that featured an all black cast. It gave us this experience inside an hbcu. If yall was gonna pledge with a sorority, you guys if i were to do it, i would pledge delta, just because its like, its sisterhood. Sorority Stepping admissions went up by 50 . The outcome is today, more doctors, more black lawyers, more black people in the workforce, because people who obviously would not have applied to college before, applied to it after they saw it On Television. mysterious music heather, will you accept this rose . Absolutely. In terms of the Dating Category of Reality Shows, obviously the bachelor, the bachelorette, and bachelor in paradise are probably the most well known, but until recently, there werent many black faces on that show. Theyd be in the dating pool, but they definitely werent leading. In the early 2000s, that wasnt a thing that america was ready for. You barely had interracial relationships On Television at the time. You know, us just being the main source of attraction and beauty was just not it. It really was the absence of black faces that really allowed for the more outlandish, hilarious, and also blackcentric stories to be told. And the first one was flavor of love. The bachelor didnt wanna put black faces front and center, cue flavor flav. Yeah women scream flavor flav the door swings open, and it is flavor flav, coming in with the largest top hat ive ever seen in my life, this huge clock around his neck, and hes like, yeah, boy. Go flavor and goldie. Go flavor and goldie. Hey. Hey. I love flav. I love him. My man, i hug it out every time i see him. That is not the most attractive brother, so it was interesting to see these women fighting, and crying, and everything over him. [flavor] welcome. I gave the girls nicknames. girls cheer flavor flav. And we had a little mixer. Flavor flav is just giving women unappropriate nicknames. One girl took a dump on the floor. Yes it could have happened to anybody, so. So Tiffany Pollard debuted on flavor of love, where he gave her the nickname, new york, and kind of birthed one of the most incredible queens of reality tv in that moment. We have caught followings to this day from the things we did over 17 years ago. It is such a high honor to be a part of the first black Reality Television series that portrayed us looking for love. So in the mid 2000s, you had docuseries, you had relationship dating shows, but there was really an absence of representation of the black family. And then, the selfproclaimed king of r b came and changed all of that, in a way a lot of us didnt see coming. Yeah. Whitney Singing that show was so successful about the life of bobby and whitney. It got so many ratings. It Just Launched bravo network. Whitney, you aint gonna do beep . What are you gonna do, put your hand on me . At that time, whitney was still one of the biggest stars in the world, and we got this peek into the insane life they were living. [whitney] no. [bobby] sure. You can take a picture of me. [rickey] bobby brown seemed to love the limelight. I say, no. He says, yes. Whitney houston kind of ran from it. Every episode of being bobby brown was crazy. techno music it was followed soon after by braxton family values. We didnt know tamar. We didnt know towanda and traci. You got to see a slice of Beyond Toni Singing in her breathy voice. Ill never breathe again. I see why you wont breathe again, toni, all of this drama going on. Dont just try to pinpoint and say it was just you being horrible in a group, tamar, every group youve been in failed. In 2006, andy cohen and the folks at bravo started real housewives of orange county, which was featuring very rich women who are all white. Networks like bet and bravo, led the way with Black Unscripted television. Both of those networks realized very early on that the key to Reality Television was black women, and really opened a door for the ultimate unscripted franchise. The Real Housewives Of Atlanta was the first time that we got to see affluent black women living their lives, behind gates, and shopping, and just being super fabulous. Fabulous. Gone with the wind, fabulous. What weve been able to do in atlanta, as a community, as a race, is just stepping up a notch in atlanta. When i look at black success, black entertainment, all of those things happening in atlanta, you just have a different swag than everybody else. Atlanta got the fights. I am very rich, bitch. Atlanta got restaurants, they got drinks getting thrown at each other. Yeah. Who gonna check me boo . There werent a lot of black females on primetime until you saw housewives. And it actually showed them as business women. Hi. How is everything . [woman] good. [nene] lets toast. Cheers. [nene] to new beginnings. Yes. The breakout star of the Real Housewives Of Atlanta was hands down, nene leakes. Passerby, can you take a photo of us . She really was in her own lane. And she really revolutionized Reality Television, honestly. I said what i said. Lets not forget that the Real Housewives Of Atlanta was a gamble, and the gamble doesnt just pay off, it explodes. We see each other. We see each other. And whats really fascinating about this world of reality is it really gave birth to stars, and hollywood fought it for a while. It was like, what is this . This isnt scripted. This isnt television, or film, as we know it. And so, the industry pushed back for a long time to call these people anything, but the stars, that quite frankly, they were becoming. upbeat music put a smile on your plate with new pancake tacos. Competition shows resonate with viewers so much because we love an underdog. energetic music when American Idol premiered in 2002, you know, we were still just months out of 9 11. The country was looking for something that was happy, and joyous, and that we could celebrate people, and not really think about all the dramatic things that were happening. American idol is a Competition Show where young, aspiring singers get the opportunity to audition for the Music Industry and live out their dream. By season 2 and 3, it was pretty clear that the show was just a pop culture phenomenon, and generated some huge stars. You know, ruben studdard, fantasia, and of course, jennifer hudson. Ladies and gentlemen, give it up, please for jennifer hudson. How does this moment feel right now, fantasia . You know what . I always say, ive been through some things, but i worked hard to get to where im at. I think that its extremely special that this show showcased black voices in the way that it did. You definitely understand the impact that the show has had on the Music Industry, because it brings out the real talent. You had American Idol that was this huge hit on fox. And it was totally devoid of a hiphop anything, which i mean, really kind of paved the way, if you think about it, for puff daddy to come through. He said, what . Aint no nothing, nowhere . Making a band it is. The making of the band on mtv, come on the first version, First Edition of this show, lou pearlman went out and he created a boy band called otown. Yes. So what are we doing this time . What you gonna see is something totally different. Youre gonna see from the hiphop perspective, gonna see me nurture and sculpt a group from the ground up. Puff realized that the format of what they was looking for wasnt happening in black culture, so puff rearranged this show and made it black. Puffy just told us to go to the store in brooklyn and bring him back a cheesecake and walk. Diddy comes out with Making The Band, excuse me, puff. Yeah. This was before he was diddy. Puff daddy. And you watch it, and youre like, wow. He really has these people walking to brooklyn to get cheesecake. What does that have to do with the Music Industry . Cant believe yall, stop walking to beep brooklyn. Is you crazy . Just hearing diddy every week, im shutting down the studio. [puff] im shutting down the studio. I think that Making The Band was so fun, and ridiculous, and over the top, in a way that i think more tv shows should have the courage to be now. From every mountainside with American Idol and Making The Band dominating the conversation and ratings in 2002, the Talent Competition series was revitalized. upbeat music in 2003, americas next top model arrives. Tyra banks was the star. And because she was a star herself in the the modeling world, she brought such a huge audience to it. My name is yaya. Im so happy to be here. I cant believe im really here in front of you guys. After the success of puffs Making The Band, we see tyra come in with her own distinctive take on the Competition Show. This time, set in the supermodel world, which traditionally, was very white. What was really special was we were seeing representation in ways that we didnt normally see it. For the longest, the supermodel was waif thin, and white, and blue eyed or blonde haired. And those were gorgeous, beautiful women, but there were so many other types of beautiful, gorgeous women. I actually started americas next top model because i wanted to emphasize those types of things that people considered to be not so beautiful, we actually highlight. And it normalized celebrating that beauty. What she did is she gave little girls at home, in little small towns, a chance to see what that life could be and that they could be in that life. Tyra banks just told me that im posed to be a star. That show really set the stage for other nonsinging talent Competition Shows. And i think one of the most recent successors is rupauls drag race. Rupaul really kind of brings us in behind the curtain, into the drag experience. Its a Competition Show for the most outrageous, the biggest personalities youve ever seen. And its everything from pageantry, to makeup, to lip sync, to how do you carry yourself when its time to go . You know what im saying . Ooo, i dont like to show off rupauls drag race launched in 2009. Think about that era. We had just elected obama. There was hope everywhere. The fight for gay marriage was getting stronger, and people were talking about Lgbtq Representation in a way that they had never done before. Its not just a show at this point, its a language, its a bridge. You know, ive had moments introducing my family to different aspects of the black queer experience just by watching that show. You could never have a sugar daddy because you are not that kind of girl. This is what people miss about rupauls drag race, its a Great Television program. gasps you fake ass, Dominique Deveraux wanna be yells theyre legit showing up and falling out on this show. It is just such a phenomenal starmaking show. One year later, im in front of mike ruiz again. I have something to prove. Get out here and turn it out. Its the kind of legacy i hope to leave. It has changed the actual world. [rupaul] for people like tyler perry, or eddie murphy, or people who are straight, who dress up in drag [interviewer] right. [rupaul] its perfectly fine. But if you identify as gay, its been sort of a, not so open road. And thats why he is a emmy darling. I would like to thank, on behalf of the 140 drag queens we have released into the wild. If you cant love yourself, how in the hell you gonna Love Somebody Else . Can i get an amen up in here . Audience Cheers it has changed what it means to be gay, especially for people of color, and especially in small towns, and especially across the country, in ways that i did not think was possible in our lifetime. upbeat music wheezing asthma isnt pretty. When judge ito opened up the courtroom to cameras, we were able to see the legal system in a way we hadnt before, and it really opened up the doors for judge shows. In the late 1990s, we saw a flurry of shows starring black judges. That is a different way of presenting black culture in america. Any judge, they put in a robe, they all, you know, i know i am getting the law. Im getting the legal stuff. I know backwards and forwards. I feel like im a lawyer after i watch the judge show. Court shows would not be the same if it wasnt for judge joe brown and judge greg mathis. Mathis, baby. [desus] okay . Judge joe brown was the first black judge On Television. He was this fresh, tough alternative to the peoples court. The more you talk, [plaintiff] no, if you would the worse it gets. Be quiet, [brown] keep talking. And let me talk. [brown] youre telling me to be be quiet . Get her outta here. Joe brown and his one liners are just hilarious. You judging me and you dont even know me. I am judging you. [plaintiff] right. [brown] thats what my job has been for a long time. Hes like an old uncle that pretty much has no filter. Hes gonna tell you like it is, and not hold anything back. You have aggregated your likelihood of being a credible witness cause youre trying to play Bozo The Clown instead of man with some respect, courtesy, and consideration for how it looks. Judge joe brown is someone who you watch, and youre like, oh my god, thank god there is a voice of reason that im getting to watch, who has similar experiences to me and is not afraid to just be like, heres the sentence. I dont care if you like it or not. [announcer] meet greg mathis. The young man who got a Second Chance and was elected judge. Everybody loves judge mathis because it was like, you know, you figured, thats a brother. Thats a judge. I know he done done something. And he talked like and said, yeah, ive been there. Ive been in them streets. I done did all that, and i turned my life around. You know, the reason i accepted the opportunity to come to television was because my objective is to be an inspiration. The way we do that, is at the intro of every episode, i want them to show my journey from jail to judge. Literally show it. Im not gonna let you sit here and blame this man, sue this man, lie on this man. I have a little humor, and a little street edge, and a little wit. So they tell me. But when you find somebody that understand you, been where you been, turnt it around, and then now to help you, you wanted to see him cause he, you know, it was like everybody wanted go to joe to tell you like it is. Bring him to us and well be fair. So to see this influx of black judges On Television now, it inspires young black kids to like, oh, i can do that too. Oh, i can be a judge. This matter, it is so ordered. Siren Ringing [protestor] you are the only ones armed in this crowd. In the early 2000s, more and more people had become fed up with the system. [protestors] put the guns down. Put the guns down. [newscaster] officers got physical with people who stood in the middle of the street. Judge shows allowed us to look at the criminal Justice System with a bit of levity. Unscripted also had a space for a Raw Gritty Look at street crime. As we, as a nation right now, are grappling with policing in this country, and Black Americans deepseeded distrust of police in this country, you have a show like first 48, which contradicts that by showing black detectives in the first 48 hours of a crime, trying to solve it. [officer] i need yall to work with me and not against me. [man] alright. I dont want you guys to go off of a possibility. Im gonna get the guy who did this. Im gonna put his ass away. The first 48, therere actually black detectives and the black police officers, working with the families, and working with the community. That i think its very important, because you actually got to see the detectives caring about whats going on in the community, trying to solve these cases and help these families get through these traumatic situations. If you want me to treat you like a killer, i can do that. I put killers in prison. You aint no damn killer. You understand what im telling you . You made a bad decision. You made a bad mistake. Anytime we can have an accurate portrayal of who we are in our full diversity and dimension, complexity and contribution, particularly when were contributing positive things, we need to see that. [reporter] there are new developments in the death of george floyd, The Unarmed Black Man in minneapolis, who died in police custody. As with rodney king, the situation with George Floyds murder was caught on camera, which gave people all over the world an insidelook into a broken system. Everybody realizes that nows the time when you cant just sit on the sidelines. You cant. You have to be actively antiracist. Thats what has to happen now. No justice. No peace. No justice. No peace. The genre of television where we see the most change following the murder of george floyd, and the protest that followed that, is the unscripted realm. Its the shows that used to follow police officers. So live pd, cops, really long running shows that had pretty dedicated fan bases were canceled following those protests. I think one of the most gratifying moments in American Television history is when social unrest and the truth of what ails us as a country impacted Network Executives to say, enough of the false narrative of cops always being the hero. So you have these incidents, good and bad, in reality tv and Unscripted Television, where real life events are seeping into what were seeing On Television, and giving us a different way to consume whats happening in the streets. Nus and serena winning everything from Grand Slams To Olympic gold medals. We have michelle obama, who is the first black first lady. It really opened the door for black women to come in and take their shot at unscripted. Now we have black creators, and its their responsibility to make sure that our stories are told in a multidimensional way, with nuance. In 2010, shaunie oneil, former wife of shaquille oneil, brings us this fresh look at the lives of the women behind basketball superstars, called basketball wives. People think, well, this is all she has the ability to do. So in that sense, it has, at times, been somewhat limiting for me. Love hip hop was held to a different standard in terms of what the expectations were for the show. Luckily love hip hop blew those expectations out of the water, and it made the path, i hope, a lot easier. Not just for myself, but for other women who were coming in behind me to do what i was doing. upbeat music when i initially pitched Married To Medicine to bravo, they said, we already have a black ensemble cast show. And i said, but you dont have this one. What i love about Married To Medicine is that you have a show about black professionals. You are showing black people being on this level that we dont normally get to see. Yes, babe, honey, shes here. Mariahs in the house. I love the fact that she created the concept of this show and really set up a platform for other people to shine. Being a owner of a tv show has peaks and valleys because people tell you how hard it is to pitch a show and get it picked up, but they never tell you how hard it is to actually keep it. Welcome to the doctors wives club. Black ownership and unscripted tv is so important because we need to be vested in our own stories and create generational wealth. And its important to be tied to it. Its our stories so we should be able to benefit from our stories. It is so important for us to have African American representation, especially female representation, with Mona Scott Young and mariah huq, being the creators and the leaders of these African American Reality Shows so that we have true authenticity. Creating Married To Medicine has been a hell of a journey, but i wouldnt change it because it was so important for me to create something that we can call our own. techno music we get into the 2000s. We are now in what people call the postracial time. One of the things that happened was there was a Mental Health reckoning in the black community. Well take it step by step. One thing at time. I think everyone, due to the events of the time, agreed that we were all existing in the state of ptsd and Unscripted Television was also reflecting that. The sort of struggles within the black community with Mental Health and how we dealt with it. Traditionally, theres been so much stigma around, in the black community, not talking about our Mental Health, not talking about therapy, not talking about the demons that we struggle with. Black creators are putting out all of these amazing shows that focus on issues like family dynamics, and parentchild relationships, and addiction, and to watch them can almost be like going to your own therapy session. Anything is a trigger. Putting on high heels could be a trigger cause i used to be a prostitute. [group members] yeah. This is mental. Its right here. Its important that we see people that look like us so that when we have moments of breakdown, when we have moments of vulnerability, when we have moments of turmoil, theres someone that we can identify with that will understand our plight and be able to help us through it. I am iyanla vanzant, and i am here to help you do your work. Inspirational Music iyanla kind of normalized healing work, especially with regards to black families, to sort of break through trauma, particularly family trauma. Well, you know, uncle earl, thats why he up in the attic. And now we see, no, that was mental illness. I actually was on the iyanla fix my life show with my sister who wanted to have her life fixed. And i was like, okay, mal, what does this mean . Heres what i have to ask you, what are your partners, your relationships . What are they showing you about yourself . Although its a reality show. We really had to do the work. And we really went through that process, like a lot of triggers came out and a lot of trauma came up. It was very powerful. You get to see people as they are, and were all different. And i think thats the beauty of it, that you get to see different people as themselves and not a caricature or somebodys imagination of storytelling. Its beautiful to be able to see who we are at our best, while also sharing some of the more rocky, difficult, uncomfortable parts of who we are, because thats humanity fleshed out. The good, the bad, and the ugly. You never know what to expect and how it could help you in a positive way. Which sounds crazy because our Reality Shows dont skew towards a happy ending, but for me it was life changing. Love you.
