seven-month-old baby. welcome to the show, everyone. it is 8:00 a.m. here in uchain, and russia is pummeling ukrainian rail hubs and supply lines as it ramps up its assault on the east. you are looking at a railway bridge that was blown up on friday. we have been able to geolocate it, and verify the authenticity of that video you are look at near the donetsk region and a senior u.s. official tells cnn russian forces are making incremental advances there. meantime, another mass gave was discovered friday in the key suburb of bucha. 900 civil yaps have already been found dead in the kyiv region in the wake of russian forces pulling out. russia's focus is now on the eastern donbas region. moss coy's aim is to kill everyone living there. have a listen. >> translator: only if ukraine will stand, will they live. if the russian invaders succeed in realizing their plan, at least in part, they will still have enough artillery and aircraft to destroy the entire donbas just as they destroyed mariupol. the city which is one of the most developed in the region is simply a russian concentration camp in the middle of ruins. >> well, the situation also growing evermore dire, of course, for mariupol's last defenders holed up. president zelenskyy referencing there. a ukrainian commander inside the plant tells of leentless russian attack and scores of people injured. our jim sciutto has the story for you. >> reporter: hundreds of civilians, including children, still trapped in a mariupol steel plant tonight after russia blocked ukraine's latest attempt to rescue them. the last military holdout in an embattled cities and official says they have closed off for now, potentially ahead of another attempt to storm the plant. >> there is lack of everything, lack of water, food, meds, lack of any social help. so they need to be human created as soon as possible. >> more than 600 people in total injured after a bombing wednesday night that hit a makeshift-military hospital inside the complex. a military commander inside the plant spoke with cnn. >> translator: the situation is critical. it is beyond a humanitarian catastrophe. we cannot tell you how long we can hold on for. that all depends on the enemy' movementless and also on luck. >> humanitarian corridors were one of the items u.n. secretary general on antonio guterres lobd for. but while meeting in kyiv, several missiles struck. the attack shattered relative calm in the capital. one blast killed a journalist. russians are now making incremental progress in eastern ukraine. this video shows extensive shelling of an important railway hub, and supply line for ukraine troops. a key railroad bridge destroyed. >> as well. u.s. intelligence sees russia making improvements to fix some of the principals that plague the military in the early weeks of the invasion. they are trying very hard to overcome the challenges they had in the north by making sure logistics and sustainment can keep up with movement of troops but the ukrainians are fighting back hard and making it hard for them to make any progress. a fuel depot because was attacked in the donetsk region and ukrainian officials say a town in the northeast near kharkiv has been recaptured. jim sciutto, cnn, lviv, ukraine. an emotional moment at the pentagon friday. pentagon spokesman john kirby choked up when speaking about the atrocities in ukraine. kirby was asked if he believes russian president vladimir putin was a rational actor. for his part, listen to what he said. have a listen. >> it's difficult to look at the -- sorry -- it's difficult to look at some of the images, and mimagine that any well-thinking, serious, mature leader would do that. so, i can't talk to his psychology but i think we can all speak to his depravity. >> well, kirby also spoke of putin trying to justify the war as protecting russians in ukraine defending russian' national interests and rooting out nazism in ukraine. let us kirby called it, bs, let's just say that. stuart, very good morning to you. thanks for taking the time to speak to us this morning. let me get your thoughts right there on what we heard from john kirby. seeing john kirby, you know, choke up, is not something we are used to seeing but understandable given the atrocities we have been reportling on, day in and day out. >> no absolutely. and some of the images coming out from ukraine, particularly of the civilian' casualties are very upsetting. i am not really surprised that, um, he has found it difficult to deal with. we all have our moment hes where words don't suffice, i'm afraid. >> yeah. and you put it very well and explained it very well. and i think many people round the world would understand that emotion. so, let's start talk -- let's talk about the -- the developments in the battlefield, on the front lines. we have seen russian forces driving -- driving southeast from izyum to the offensive in the donbas area. what is your assessment of russian' progress so far? >> well, a general assessment would be that russia isn't winning and ukraine isn't losing. that is just overall strategic position but i think it is clear russians have sorted out some of the problems they had in their drive to kyiv and are making, um, slow but steady progress. however, it is not easy. and we are coming into artillery war, a battle of attrition, where whoever could last longest will prevail. >> yeah. so, russians -- what you are saying is -- starting to get their ducks in a row, so to speak. we have also been seeing and hearing tissue and i am wondering if you can explain to me, actually, and to our viewers because it's something i find quite fascinating. attacking railway bridges. what role does this play tactically to it? >> well, it's pretty standard for a part of this sort of conventional warfare where you seek to disrupt your enemies' communications and, therefore, their logistics. knocking down railway bridges and arches prevent supplies and material being brought up from the frontline if you'd like. so it's a standard part. i think the russians call it the deep battle but they reach back into the interland of the enemy they are facing -- in this case, the ukrainians, and try disrupt their movements people coming to reinforce on the front line. >> does that benefit -- does that give ukrainians an upper hand? >> there are major obstacles even to major or modern armies if you would like. there also some means you can trust with bridges, et cetera, et cetera. but defending along river lines and dropping bridges is a standard, um, practice when it comes to defend against an oncoming enemy. >> where do you see the biggest risk in the next couple weeks or so? we were talking how may the 9th is a key date for russia. russian generals will, no doubt, be looking for a victory for putin. where are the risks for the ukrainians here? >> well, i do not think the russians have sufficient co combat power to cut off the donbas region as i think they would like to do. nor, do i think they have combat power to take od odesa so they have got salvage something before may the 9th. and it would seem to me that if they are able to, for example, completely capture mariupol, that would be sufficient for putin to be able to claim a victory in time for the may-9 parade. however, the ukraine ian defends are proving very resilient. and i don't know the russians will be able to achieve that in time. >> the steel plant is very dire where we are expecting some sort of operation to evacuate civil yaps but that still hasn't happened. and i suspect that those ukrainian forces inside wouldn't -- wouldn't turn themselves in so maybe a victory isn't a given, right, stuart? >> yes, absolutely correct. i mean, i think the reason, um, that the russians are preventing the civilians leaving is that civilians consume food and water. much as the defenders will be doing. and therefore, the fewer -- the fewer civilians who are there, better for the defenders. but someone -- something is getting supplies in. albeit, just a drizzle because if that had not been the case, unless there are vast stores of food and ammunition in the tunnels, the defenders would have been forced out before now so not really quite sure what is going on there. the russian can't get in and ukrainians can't get out so it is stalemate. >> yeah. and we know from -- from my conversation i had with the owner/ceo of the steel plant that they had supplies for about two, three weeks, so the point you make there, stuart, very important indeed. thanks very much, stuart. >> thank you. now, the mayor of kyiv says he is not surprised that russia chose to strike the capital during the u.n. chief's visit thursday. he shared with cnn's anderson cooper, the message he thinks moscow is trying to send. >> i guess his message is middle finger from russia. >> middle finger? >> yeah. >> they did it when secretaries austin and blinken left onto train. they bombed the trains in the west. secretary general of the u.n. was here yesterday. they bombed when he was still here. >> yeah, a signal. in my opinion, it's no respect. it is middle finger for everybody. >> you went to the scene of the blast. what was it like? >> it's actually traumatic to see the people. >> 25 story residential building, the first two floors bury destroyed by fire. >> we were very happy. brand-new building. so people didn't have the time to move. but 20 meters left or 20 meters survive. this can be -- kill hundreds of people. and that's why we are lucky -- what has been lucky, destroyed this apartment building, destroyed just one peoples died, ten injured. but we are lucky because this can be much more damages. >> reporter: a few weeks ago, you had said that people shouldn't rush back. people who had moved away shouldn't rush back necessarily. is that still the case? are you -- are you cautious about people returning? >> we can't forbid them to come. yes of course, i understand everyone want to come back to hometown and the last week was pretty quiet, and people moved back. but my proposals -- my advice to anyone define to stay in much more safety place because we responsible for the life of people, for safety. and they drn it's any second, any minutes, any hours, can land every place in our hometown. and it is not secret. could he be was target and still target from russians. >> the mayor went on to say he thinks ukraine will be victorious because the people have a strong will to fight. well, as the war drags on, so does the exodus of ukrainian refugees to other countries. according to the u.n., more than 5.4 million refugees have ned since the fighting began. more than 7.7 others -- million others are internally displaced. the organization also says an estimated 13 million ukrainians are stranded near war zones, and unable to leave. well, almost 3 million of those refugees fled to -- to poland. but now, they are safe from the war. the big question is what next? seven-month-old baby. welcome to the show, everyone. it is 8:00 a.m. here in uchain, and russia is pummeling ukrainian rail hubs and supply lines as it ramps up its assault on the east. you are looking at a railway bridge that was blown up on friday. we have been able to geolocate it, and verify the authenticity of that video you are look at near the donetsk region and a senior u.s. official tells cnn russian forces are making incremental advances there. meantime, another mass gave was discovered friday in the key suburb of bucha.
