Reported in both the donetsk and luhansk regions of the country. Evacuation attempts disrupted by russian shelling. Thats something we have seen frequently in this war. Russian forces deliberately bombing civilians as they try to flee for their lives, they stopped a bus from safely leaving the town. Cnns ben wedeman, he is live in kramatorsk, ukraine, and, ben, the west, the u. S. Is expecting a bloody, bloody new phase of the conflict, almost world war iilike in the east in the coming days and weeks and yet again civilians suffering so much of all this. Reporter yeah, jim. We were in the town of rubizhne, about an hour and a halfs drive east of here, and that is it is a battle zone. The russians control the northern part, the ukrainians control the southern part. We were able to get on an advantage point overlooking the town and saw just artillery shells raining down, raining down on both sides it must be pointed out. Now, we were able to get into the southern part of the city, and there we found a very small group of people trying to survive under fire. And it begins, again. Hell rains down. A dozen people are hiding in the basement of a bombed out theater in the town of rubizhne. Let it stop, o lord, he says. Now there is incoming. A white flag hangs outside to no effect. The theater above has been bombed and bombed again and again. Yet they stay. Too poor, too old, too frightened to flee. Nina, 89 years old, has been here for five weeks. I want to go home, she says. Ive suffered too much. Ive seen the fire and the smoke. Ive seen it all. Im scared. Ninas plea simple. Help us. Help us. Her daughter ludmilla struggles to comfort her. Were praying to god to stop it, she says. To hear us. Ina says i have nowhere to go. I have no friends, no relatives. With the shelling intensifying, volunteers are finding it hard to deliver food. As russian and Ukrainian Forces fight for control over rubizhne, there are people down there. Praying as hell rains down. And i would say theyre suffering from post Traumatic Stress disorder, those poor people in the shelter, but there is nothing post about it. It is ongoing. They are down there, we came with tv lights, but normally theyre down there, their only illumination is they take cooking oil and put wicks or pieces of cloth into it. There is no running water. No electricity. And theyre barely surviving. Really when we went down there, you could tell these people were just on the edge of sanity. Jim . Youre right. Experience shows the trauma from wars like this, physical and psychological, last many, many years afterwards. Ben wedeman, kramatorsk, thanks so much. And ongoing feature of this war is not just accidental targeting of civilians, but deliberate targeting of civilians and then attempts by Russian Forces to cover up the evidence. So look at new Satellite Images. They show what are reported to be more than 200 mass graves outside of mariupol. The Russian Forces there accused of secret burials, big picture, a besieged city now on the verge of collapse. Earlier this morning we posed questions to the mayor of mariupol. He had some harrowing responses. Have a listen. Vladimir putin is claiming victory in mariupol, President Biden said there is no evidence yet that mariupol has completely fallen. Which is it . Translator the truth is that the Armed Forces Of Ukraine are defending mariupol. And mariupol is the Beating Heart of ukraine today. Our guys are outnumbered 10, 15 times but they are defending, theyre holding up, and they are remaining there. And they are frustrating the enemy as much as possible. Putin also said he scrapped plans to storm the azovstal steel plant. What will happen to all those people trapped there now . Translator so at the moment we have people waiting for evacuation. We would like to evacuate the civilians that are sheltering in azovstal and we need one clear day of ceasefire to evacuate those people. However, we have not been able to so far. The day before yesterday we planned to open up an Evacuation Route that these people could join. And however the Russian Forces that continued bombarding the plant and shelling the plant and we werent able to get the people out of there. Is there any current effort by ukraine or other nations to get them out safely . Translator everybody is uniting around this goal of helping the people trapped there. And yesterday we heard an appeal from u. S. Sppresident joe biden who asked for everybody to do whatever is possible to save the people trapped in azovstal. New Satellite Images seem to show mass graves just outside of mariupol. How many civilians do you believe have been killed in your city . Translator according to our estimates, we have around 20,000 dead, civilian deaths in mariupol, and these were people who were buried by enemy shelling, by enemy bombardment, buried under the rubble and at the moment were witnessing the enemy trying to hide the evidence of their crimes using the instrument of mass graves. As the leader of this city, you knew many of these people, what is it like to see this happen . Translator it is very painful for me to see this. Very painful and sad because for eight years we were trying to develop mariupol as a showcase for Ukrainian Donbas for Restored Donbas since the 2014 attempts to take it. And it was blossoming, it was turning into a modern city, we were developing it as a modern State Of The Art City to fulfill peoples dreams as we imagined. We had a strategy for the City Development to make this a showcase. And i feel as if my heart has been torn out. My life, my family, we lived there, this was our life, and for me, and Tens Of Thousands of mariupol residents, it is extremely painful to see so many dead and the city destroyed. The u. S. Is sending another big Weapons Shipment to ukraine. 800 million, heavy artillery. Tell us how this will help the fight and what is missing at this point. Translator well, the number one priority now is to help save the lives of civilians. But i also want to thank joe biden for helping us with the military assistance and all thank all the partners. This these weapons are very necessary. It will enable us to unlock the region, unlock mariupol. It will help us hold up the defense and then to counter attack. And eventually free the region and entire ukrainian territory of the enemy occupation. Do you believe Ukrainian Forces can ever take mariupol back from Russian Forces . If so, how do they do it and when . Well, one thing i would say that will help us get back to mariupol is a full oil and gas embargo on russia. Those who buy these products must realize that are financing the enemys war and the damage that the enemy is doing to our cities, cities like mariupol. And they need to stop receiving this money. And once that happens, we believe that in two to three weeks, we will stop the enemy, and the enemy will be forced to retreat. 20,000 deaths in that city, he says. Very important interview there that jim did with the mayor. And just in, british Prime Minister Boris Johnson said moments ago there is a, quote, realistic possibility that Vladimir Putin may win his brutal war in ukraine. He added that the situation is unpredictable, but he cited that putins large army and the ability to grind the ukrainians down are factors here. That is very candid, jim. I think the question is going to be what does a russian victory look like . Is the cost that is exacted by the ukrainians, if there is a russian victory, is it a pyrrhic victory . Is it something they can hail or are the casualties on their side going to be so large . We heard from john kirby, he said even this new general they brought in to oversee everything, they dont see that changing things, theyre still having problems, and they are going to pay a big price, even if they do quote, unquote win. Two schools of thought here. You speak to some of our Military Analysts and they make the point that russia, as you say, still has the same challenges faced around kyiv. Bad morale, bad supply, losing enormous numbers of soldiers and hardware. And so on. The trouble is russia doesnt care to some degree, right . Clearly doesnt care about the loss of its soldiers lives. Already lost more than it lost in all of afghanistan in the 1980s. So when you have an adversary like that, that is damned the consequences, what does that mean for the ukrainians . I asked a ukrainian member of Parliament Last night, ukrainians care about lost soldiers and destroyed cities, russia does not. How do you win a war when it is a war of attrition. It is a problem. It is conceivable. I think johnsons warning is an important one, because all of us have a tendency, understandably, to celebrate and be amazed by, as we should be, because it is quite remarkable, ukraines victories and its defense so far, but nothing is written in stone, only two months into a war that could last months, even years, and by the way, goes back to 2014 when russia first invaded. So all possibilities are open. I also think hes painting a picture for a picture for european allies as if to say, if you get to the point where russia has won this war, you may have to ask yourself, is there something more you could have done . Right now were seeing so much military aid flow in, there are some economic measures, oil, gas, that europe especially could undertake, could enact that might make a difference. So we do have some more on our Breaking News this morning, a suspect has been declared in the case of british toddler Madeleine Mccann, who went missing so many years ago. 15 years ago. Well have the new details next. Plus, House Minority leader Kevin Mccarthy says it is a lie that he planned to Ask Donald Trump to resign. The problem is, there is tape of him saying it. And johnny depp confronted in the courtroom. Mr. Depp, you said i will [ bleep ] her burnt corpse afterward to make sure shes dead. How the actor responded under Cross Examination about his own texts about his exwife. Its still the eat fresh refresh, and subways refreshing their italians. So, were taking this to italy. Refresh. We will be back to the war in ukraine in a moment. First, more Breaking News internationally. A suspect has now officially been declared in the case of the missing british toddler Madeleine Mccann. She was, you may remember, just 3 years old when she vanished from a resort in portugal in may, 2007. It sparked an international manhunt. Here is the picture there, cnns Nina Dos Santos is live in london with more. Why now . The timing is crucial here, jim. Interesting that you picked up on that. Portuguese law stipulates that a statute of limitations is about to run out on cases like this. It is a 15year statute of limitations, which would expire on may 3rd. For that reason, lawyers, including the lawyer of this suspect in particular, hypothesized though there isnt specific new information here to say that hes a suspect, the portuguese authorities have gone ahead with naming him as a suspect, essentially to keep the case alive. What do we know about this individual . We know back in 2020 German Authorities said that a man that they already had in custody named christian b. , you saw his mug shot earlier there, they had reason to suspect he had been involved in the disappearance of Madeleine Mccann and they also said that they assumed at this point back in 2020 that she was probably dead. They just said they didnt have enough evidence to actually push forward with the case and secure a conviction. So what were going to see here is the portuguese authorities revive this case, which has been dormant for some years now. And then try and push forward perhaps with a view to prosecuting this individual who is currently in custody in germany on unrelated charges. This as you pointed out is one of the most heart felt tragic cases of disappearance. It captivated the international audiences. It captivated people here in the uk. And also in portugal. So, again, this will keep the Question Marks going about what exactly happened to this little girl who disappeared from her parents holiday home on may 3rd, 2007, some 15 years ago, jim. Yeah, just the trauma, the suffering that family, those parents have been through all those years. Goodness. Nina dos santos, thank you for that update. Intercepted audio communications, just released by the ukrainian military, report to show russian soldiers discussing an order to kill prisoners of war. Were going to play those comments for you. Brandnew audio obtained by the New York Times appearing to show House Minority leader Kevin Mccarthy seriously thinking about advising trump to resign from office after january 6th. A day after he vehemently denied reports he had done just that. Lets listen. I seriously thinking of having that conversation with him tonight. I havent talked to him in a couple of days. From what i know of him, i mean, you guys all know him too, do you think he would ever back away . What i think im going to do is im going to call him, only discussion i would have with him is that i think this will pass. And it would be my recommendation you resign. I mean, that would be my take, but i dont think he would take it. But i dont know. Cnn reached out for comment and has not heard back. Joining us now to discuss this is cnn senior political analyst john avlon. John, how are you how are you seeing this, how are you wading through these differing accounts of Kevin Mccarthys . There is no wading through. Kevin mccarthy denied the reporting and then the audiotape got released. Kevin mccarthy lied. He got caught lying about calling for the president of his own party to resign after the attacks of january 6th. So it not only speaks to Kevin Mccarthys credibility, it speaks to the fact that now hes lying for a liar, someone he knew was unfit to serve after inciting an attack on our capitol. Doesnt that tell you a lot about what hes willing to risk being caught in a lie like this for where his loyalties lie, for his political ambitions, and the favor he has to curry with President Trump and his followers . Yeah, of course it does. Look, he is saying that nothing is more powerful. There is not truth doesnt matter. Thats all negotiable as long as he doesnt feel anyones got the receipts. He will lie as much as he needs to, to grasp power. What is pathetic hes sucking up to an expresident who he knows is unfit for office, who he said nobody should defend because he had done something indefensible. This is about fear and greed. The reason people have fallen into line, at a critical moment, when they had that moral clarity after the attack, is because theyre afraid of President Trump, theyre afraid of the base, and theyre greedy for more power. Fear and greed. Im really curious what you think about former president obama said, hes speaking out about the growing influence of disinformation in our society and how it can turn deadly. The fact that scientists developed safe, effective vaccines in record time is an unbelievable achievement. And yet despite the fact we have now essentially clinically tested the vaccine on billions of people worldwide, around one in five americans is still willing to put themselves at risk and put their families at risk rather than get vaccinated. People are dying because of misinformation. I am so curious to hear him speak about it. I think back to when did all this disinformation take hold, the conspiracy theories. It was during the obama administration. Im not saying there is a cause here, but that was the time it wam came with sandy hook and birtherism. Thats where you saw it grow. It began analog old school and proliferated via social media. Thats why it is fascinating speech to hear. The former president reflect on this. And really to indicate hes going to dedicate a significant portion of his post presidency to combatting disinformation, to strengthen democracy. And as he said, look, we know people can die from disinformation. This is something you and i talk about all the time on reality check. The Disinformation Wars that were in, and crucially also how we pivot to a solution. And while he didnt claim to have a single solution or silver bullet, one thing he focused on is the need for algorithm reform. It is the algorithm, stupid. He can do a lot by elevating the conversation, and forcing people to confront what is happening. And how it is a global problem, not just here in america, but we need more transparency algorithms. There is computers and social media, the window we look on the world, we dont know that the window is blurred, it has been distorted and we need that information to make us smarter consumers of information. It is the battle of ur our t. John avlon, thanks so much. The candidates in pennsylvanias Democratic Senate primary facing off in a contentious debate, sparks flying as Congressman Conor Lamb and state representative Malcolm Kenyatta took aim at frontrunner John Fetterman who is taking his progressive message to the heart of trump country. Manu raju joining me live with this story. Reporter he was a big target last night at the debate because he is the frontrunner in this contest, which is one of the most Important Senate races in the country. And when i spent time with all three candidates this week, including John Fetterman in trump country, it was clear he was leaning into those progressive views and the rest of the field is following him. Democrats are facing the most daunting midterm environment in a dozen years with republicans favored to take the house. And the 50 50 senate up for grabs. But here in the heart of trump country, in a Rural Pennsylvania County that joe biden lost by more than 55 points, Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman is trying to buck the tide. Warning voters that the Senate Majority could come down to them. Who thinks it is going to be a cakewalk for democrats in this cycle . Not one hand. Not one hand. I agree with you. It is going to be a tough cycle for democrats and we cannot afford to write off any part of pennsylvania. Reporter fetterman now the frontrunner in a threeway race ahead of the May 17th Democratic primary for the senate seat being vacated by republican pat toomey. A race also defined by its intense debate over what it means to be a democrat. On one side, fetterman calling for the legalization of pot, backing an Assault Weapons ban and medicare for all, and pushing an increase in the minimum wage. And also harshly critical of moderates like joe manchin. Our party has room for diversity of thought, but if you are looking for a joe manchin democrat, i am not your candidate. Reporter but dont voters want some level of bipartisanship to some pragmatism to their politics and not for one party going too far . I agree. I also want a full head of hair, but realistically thats not going to happen right now. Reporter fetterman says hes within the democratic mainstream. I dont mean to nitpick. I wouldnt consider myself progressive. Im a democrat running on the same platform of ideas that every other democrat in this race is running on. If a moderate democrat is somebody who would break with the rest of the caucus and screw up build back better or the democratic agenda, im not a moderate. Reporter conor lamb, a centrist, representing the swing pittsburgh area district in the house has been known to buck his party. Including by opposing nancy pelosi as speaker. But even as lamb has aligned with Fetterman On Progressive Views such as gutting the filibuster, he has struggled it keep pace in fundraising and the polls. And he is now sharpening his attacks against the frontrunner. I know a lot of people in our party like him. But it is an awful big risk with an election as high stakes as this. Reporter there is also this reality, bidens Approval Rating is under water, but none of the democrats here are running away from him yet. Were going to embrace joe biden. I campaigned with him a lot. There is no there is no downside to that in my mind. Reporter but one dilemma confronting democrats, voter anger over gas prices, inflation, and frustration over washington gridlock. I think people are looking around, for real, and just saying, what the hell are we doing . What is the hell are we doing . Reporter as for the moderates bucking the democratic agenda i would call it full of crap. Reporter now, last nights debate, the rivals attacked fetterman over a 2013 incident which when he was mayor of the town of braddock, he chased down a suspected shooter in that town and pulled out a gun and that person happened to be a black man who was out for a jog. Now, he has defended his efforts there, said he was trying to keep his community safe, his community has since had reelected him twice after a majority African American community. And i asked him this week about that specific incident, i said do you regret your role in this, he said, quote, it is not something that i would want to go back to, but he didnt go as far as saying im sorry and some critics are out there pointing that out. They think it will make a difference. What a race to watch. Just revealed, disturbing Text Messages from johnny depp as he faces his exwife amber heard in court. Mr. Depp, you said, i will [ bleep ] her burnt corpse afterwards to make sure she is dead. And in ukraine, brandnew Satellite Images appearing to show mass graves along the outskirts of mariupol. Were joined next by a former u. S. Special forces combat medic who has gone there to save lives. This is remington. Hes a member of the family, for sure. We always fed him kibble it just seemed like the thing to do. But he was getting picky, and we started noticing some a allergy symptoms. Com new this morning, the mayor of mariupol says he has estimates now 20,000 civilians have been killed in his city. The Satellite Images appear to show hundreds of mass graves, an effort, ukrainian officials believe, to cover up the killing of civilians. Our next guest is a former member of the u. S. Special forces, hes currently performing Combat Medicine in some of the most dangerous parts of the country, including down in southeastern ukraine. Kevin rodriguez joins us now. It is good to have you on this morning. I wonder if you could give folks at home a sense of what the fighting is like on the front lines. Well, jim, thanks for having me. I appreciate it. So its basically i like to think of it, me being back home, and just being driven from my home, and as a fighting aged male, having to defend my own backyard. And for those people that are there, when we see them come from front lines, it is just ghastly, pale white, its horrible. Yeah. I imagine the wounds youre seeing are just horrible. How are you able to save lives given all the challenges youre facing down there . So, jim, specifically darkhorse benefits this charity. We have been focusing on outfitting the ukrainian troops to treat themselves. Were focusing on a Force Multiplier here. So we train them, were only a small team, three of us, previously five, so we can only do so much. So were focusing on that Force Multiplier piece, having them train more, one trains four, four can treat four people. Thats the main mission were focusing on. You are, yourself, a veteran of war. How does this war and what youre seeing, the kinds of wounds youre seeing, the kinds of challenges the ukrainian medics youre training are facing, how does it compare . So, compared to wars the United States have seen, it is different in the sense, different environment, it is a threat, but Combat Medicine is pretty similar in the treatment of it. The main thing that were hearing is, hey, if we have a tourniquet, we got to save the life. That applies to any war. And number one preventable cause of death in battlefield is massive hemorrhage and it is treated with a tourniquet, same thing applies. Do you run into a lot of americans . Ive spoken to a number of americans, former Service Members like yourself who are volunteering doing medical work Combat Medicine, but also joining the fight. Tell us why you and colleagues like that have been moved to come here to ukraine to do your part. So, a friend of mine, a nurse i work with, shes from here, ukraine. She asked me, hey, do you know of anybody doing anything . Are you doing anything . I wasnt. So i, having a special skill set, and serving for years, i felt i could do something. So i was reached this nonprofit, darkhorse, reached out to me and asked me, hey, we have a 70 plan, were going to go treat people and save some lives. I signed up. It was that was it. And were coming here and im glad i came people thanking me, you know, seeing the confidence from when we train somebody, when we outfit them with gear, and seeing a little light go off in their head that theyre prepared at least to do something. It is rewarding. And im happy to help. Yeah. Just before we go, youre working with ukrainians who are fighting a very difficult war against a bigger and better armed opponent. But theyre brave and it is their homeland as you said. Do you think they can win this . Im not focused that far on the big picture, jim. Im just here. Its take it day by day. And little by little. Im just trying to work on outfitting these guys, save as many lives as possible. Yeah. Well, that makes a difference, saving lives. Kevin rodriguez, former u. S. Special Operations Service member, thank you for joining us. Thank you, jim. Thank you for having me. This morning, there are new questions after the mysterious deaths of two russian oligarchs just days apart from each other. What happened . And back in the u. In explosive new Text Messages submitted into evidence yesterday, Actor Johnny Depp uses shocking language to multiple third parties about his exwife amber heard. We should warn you that some of this is graphic. After you said, lets drown her before we burn her, mr. Depp, you said i will [ bleep ] her burnt corpse afterwards to make sure she is dead. Thats what you said that you would do after you burned her and after you drowned her. Is the slippery that i donated for a while, staying there. You say on october 18th, 2016, hopefully that [ bleep ] Rotting Corpse is decomposing in the [ bleep ] trunk of a honda civic, two exclamation points. Did i read that right . You did. Joining us now to talk more about this is criminal defense attorney sarah azare. There is so much to talk about here. So im just going to say, you tell us what we should be focusing on after this really, i dont know, bombshell of a day in court. Hi, brianna, yeah, you know, we have to keep bringing this back to the oped. This is about the oped and whether amber heard was a victim of Domestic Violence. It was a bad day for depp yesterday. The Cross Examination was a modulated drip on his character and credibility, and, however, with the beginning of this trial and a lot of this can be explained, the idea that hes made inconsistent statements, lied about his Alcohol Abuse and drug abuse, you know, addiction is a disease and denial and lies are part of that disease. Theyre symptoms of that disease. So all of this i expect can be explained. With respect to the video that we saw in his kitchen, he calls, you know, assaulting things wait, can i pause on that. We have that video. Lets play it and well talk about it. Sure. Oh, youre crazy. Youre crazy. Have you drunk this whole thing this morning . You started it. Oh, really . Really . What did you think of that . Awful. It is now hes now looking like a completely different depp than the one that has been on the stand testifying and closer to someone who would engage Domestic Violence. We also have to remember that both of these individuals, brianna, are saying that theyre victims of Domestic Violence and yet there is evidence on both sides that they have also perpetrated Domestic Violence. At the end of the day, the jury is going to be tasked with deciding is this a relationship of mutual combat and how does that impact her statement in this oped shes merely a victim of Domestic Violence, it sounds like we have two perpetrators. I also think, sarah, that, of course this is a legal case and you are focused on that as you should be. There also seems to be a battle for Public Opinion going on here. Mmhmm. I think, brianna, you know, at the end of the day all of the stuff that we have been seeing goes to the voracity of that oped and what heard said. That is the easiest element of defamation. The harder part is to prove actual malice and the damages. We found out he lost the gig with Pirates Of The Caribbean before the oped, not as a result of the oped. And so hes got some hurdles to overcome, but to him, and one of the first things he said on the stand, what matters is his truth. It might not be the truth to this jury, but it is his truth. And i think thats whats going to matter to hollywood. Hollywood is not holding its breath on the verdict of this case. Hollywood wants to hear his redemption, his cycle of abuse, why how he did end up in this place in the first place . I think thats why hes come forward not once, but twice. Yeah, i think thats important to him and i think thats important to amber heard as well, for sure. Sarah, really appreciate you being on. Thank you. Good to be with you. We have new questions this morning after two russian oligarchs and their families, their children, were found dead, just hours apart. Plus, theyre called Phoenix Ghost drones and theyre headed to ukraine. So how do these new American Made weapons work . How will they work on the front lines . And Breaking News, a suspect has been declared in that old case of missing british toddler Madeleine Mccann. We have the new details next.
