general prosecutor of this country and we were together at a mass grave in bucha. i want to warn our viewers, some of what you're about to see is extremely graphic and very disturbing. even as russian troops mass for what appears to be a huge offensive, authorities in kyiv continue digging up bodies. pain-staking work that goes hand in hand with investigating russia's attack on kyiv and possible crimes committed by vladimir putin's invading troops. the prosecutor general is leading the charge. she spoke to me at the edge of a mass grave in the suburb. >> of course, we understand, ukraine wants fast justice. fast justice. that's why we do everything to document all evidence, all facts of war crime we have here in ukraine. >> reporter: the french forensic investigators are also on the scene. not because ukraine lacks expertise but because kyiv wants to be as transparent as possible in the face of these efforts. >> we want to do our job absolutely. we stand with international humanitarian law. a very high level. that's why when we have our international colleagues, we understand. they can see everything. they can see the real situation here. real graves. real dead bodies. >> reporter: after ukrainian forces managed to expel russian troops from around kyiv and some other areas it occupied in ukraine, authorities have discovered scores of dead bodies. today another six found in just one basement outside kyiv. the prosecutor tells me, they are collecting evidence in thousands of cases. >> now we start to know more than 6,000 cases. the cases, war crime, crimes against humanity, aggression crimes, and we started on the first day so when we started, a case about genocide. >> reporter: all this as russia claim its forces that invaded ukraine have not harmed any civilians. on a visit to a space port with belarusian strongman alexander luke shenko, president vladimir putin claim his forces are fighting against what would be ukrainian nazis in what he calls a quote, special operation. the goals are absolutely clear and they are noble, em. i said it from the beginning and i want to draw your attention to that. there are some in the u.s. who have spent on about a possible war crimes trial against vladimir putin. is that something that you think could ever be possible and something you're working toward? >> chk, i think that everyone understands who is responsibility for this war. that is why we do everything to fix, to document evidences. but we are here in, we understand who is responsible for all of this. >> reporter: the investigators' work is complicated by the fact that the war is still going on. and they can't reach many devastated areas like the encircled city of mariupol where ukraine's president says tens of thousands have been killed. but irina says no matter how long it takes, she will press on. >> it is actually extremely important. because if we will be successful as prosecutors, i assure that we can stop such aggressions in the future. >> reporter: and jake, you saw me and the prosecutor general standing at that mass grave with dead bodies all around us. i can tell you, having been in bucha for many, many times now, there were a lot of dead bodies that have been recovered there and are continuing to be recovered there. vladimir putin at that same event that we saw. in report on that space port with luke shenko said everything we have shown there is fake. jake? >> okay, fred is bringing us the facts and the truthful thank you. we appreciate it. let's bring in matt rivers who joins me now. we've heard these unconfirmed reports of a chemical weapon of some sort used by the russians in mariupol on monday. what do we know about this? >> it is safe to say, it is murky. we don't have all the details yet and the ukrainians are saying exactly that. there is no smoking gun, agency it were, quite yet. they do have suspicion that there was a chemical attack in mariupol. this coming from the deputy minister of defense. i want to be clear about her words. she said we are trying to understand what was used. there is an assumption that these could have been foss ferrious munitions but the official information will follow later. if they are foss forrus, it is clearly a violation of international law. clearly a chemical attack and the kind of thing we've heard from officials since the beginning. war, both here in ukraine, the u.s., the u.k. this is what they were afraid of were russians to do this. but again, the u.s. not confirming this so far. there is nothing solid it actually happened but it is a suspicion that needs to be investigated. >> and the pentagon secretary said the russians have proven to be using chemical weapons. if they did in fact, has the u.s. said what the consequences will be? >> they said there will be far-reaching consequences but they are keeping it pretty close to the vest in terms of what they will be. i think there will be a lot of pressure on countries like germany, the united states, the u.k. what will they do to ramp up what they've done so far? if the use of chemical weapons is a red line, how do you back that up and ramp up sanctions or whatever you're going to do, to make it known, this is not okay. does that mean germany will maybe take a closer look at stopping energy imports from russia? will the united states be more willing to send war planes into ukraine? those are the questions that policy makers in these countries need to be asked if it is truly a red line and we get the overwhelming evidence that this chemical attack did happen. >> and let's turn to the evacuation efforts. civilians in mariupol, have they been able to get out? >> some. the number we've gotten earlier this week, yesterday, were just a few hundred. if you listen to ukrainian officials, they're saying tens of thousands still need get out. and that's indicative of what we're seeing not only in mariupol but other parts of the country. hundreds, maybe a few thousand getting out but the threat remains for hundred of thousands of ukrainians. >> thank you so much for joining us. appreciate it. i want to bring in andre, the former ukrainian defense minister. he now serves as an adviser to the ukrainian government. thank you for joining us. the military government of the donetsk region says as many as 22,000 people, ukrainians have died in mariupol. the ukrainian marines there say they'll hold on until the end. there is no ammunition or food going into mariupol. how much longer can ukraine continue to fight in mariupol? >> well, that's unclear. we don't know what forces russians will bring. if they're going to indeed use their prohibited weapons like chemicals or what they are going to do. so our marines and the national guard battalion is holding as much as they can and they're doing absolutely amazing. they've been holding in the city for over a month. it is an extremely tough situation. >> in mariupol were to fall, it would be the first major city to fall. are you worried that russia would gain control, is isince te russian military controls crimea? >> of course they will try to do that. it is difficult accept that. up to kherson which they say they control as well but it is a partial control. since the ukrainian consul has a ukrainian flag there. they will try and they will be very difficult for them. to keep control over a new territory of several thousand kilometers, of course it is difficult. and ukraine will do whatever possible to make it way more difficult. we have a chance there. it is a question of whether we have enough weapons at our disposal and that gets us to the question of the international assistance and so on. but generally, we can -- >> yeah. let's -- >> generally we can make them go. >> let's talk about that. president zelensky said the russians could end it if it were to be supplied with heavy weapons from the west. specifically, what kind of heavy weapons would end this? >> we're talking about attacks, preferably the fighter jets, and also, it is a tape of rocket artillery which is highly effective. and therefore, we've been asking from our international partners, the u.s. included, and the other ones. the thing is that if we have a certain critical amount of weapons, generally capable of fire power. we can turn it into various counter attacks. and if that happens, we feel that ukrainian army is way more trained, way more efficient and well stocked and the russians will run out of options. so actually, it is a question of having enough quantity of weapons at the right time, at the right moment. >> former deputy defense minister, thank you. so for your time. appreciate it. ?
