Ukraine, with john berman in new york. Investigations are under way this morning to determine whether Russian Forces might have used chemical weapons in the battered Southern City of mariupol. The head of the military there in the Donetsk Region telling cnn that three people are being treated for a nonlife threatening illness, or symptoms, after a russian drone dropped something from the air. Cnn cannot independently verify that claim. But the pentagon says it is monitoring this development, and the uk has launched an urgent investigation. And breaking moments ago, fierce new fighting there in mariupol, we have a new video that shows plumes of smoke rising from a residential area on the hills above a shipping yard near the citys port. And even though Russian Forces have retreated from the kyiv area in the north, there is still danger lurking in northern ukraine. President zelenskyy describing the region as one of the most contaminated by mines in the world. Translator invaders left mines everywhere. And the houses they took over, just on the streets, and the fields, they mined peoples property, mined cars, doors, they deliberately did everything to ensure that the return to these areas after deoccupation was as dangerous as possible. Due to the actions of the russian army, our territory today is one of the most contaminated by mines in the world. You can see the results of that right hint me right now. These are the ukrainians doing their best around kyiv to clean up the mines and the unexploded ordinance on the ground there. This will be a huge effort that will take some time. Overnight, reports of heavy shelling in eastern ukraine, in the donbas region. This is where everyone expects the russians to launch this new offensive that hasnt launched already. Ukrainian officials are hoping that Heavy Rain Forecasts could slow down the russians plan in the region. The rain is expected to last several days, creating acres of mud there which will keep the russians heavy arm, tanks on the roads system and could make them an easier target. Just a short time ago, we heard from the russian leader Vladimir Putin, this is first time we heard him speaking for a while in public, even after all the setbacks his military suffered around kyiv, he is claiming this morning that the Russian Military goals will be achieved. In weeks after the unprovoked invasion of a neighbor he made the ridiculous assertion that russia had no other choice. Brianna . Lets bring in cnns phil black who is here with me in lviv. Phil, lets talk about this. It is unverified to be clear, this report of a chemical weapon used, but i did speak with the military governor of the region who said, yeah, they got some information from soldiers there in mariupol that experienced something. Yeah, it is coming from the soldiers on the ground. Some of the few remaining ukrainian defenders have been surrounded and fighting there for weeks now. At this critical moment, in that battle, they say that a poisonous substance of some kind was released close by and a handful of people were impacted as you say, only three required treatment. The soldiers said they cant get to the site to inspect it because of russian fire. So it is not possible. Youre right. We cant confirm this, no one can really. Ukrainian, u. S. , uk officials all say theyre very keen to understand what is taking place here. Because of the implication, the possibility that this could be one of those much warned chemical weapons attacks. But at the moment, no one knows and it seems the consequences are not serious. They cant verify it but theyre taking it seriously. Were hearing about a lot of ukrainians coming home when it comes to the kyiv region because Russian Forces have withdrawn. But we just saw it is not necessarily safe in many places. Indeed. When the russians first withdrew, we heard from officials there who said there are booby traps, mines, explosives everywhere, dead bodied had been mined to explode. He described a scale of this which is quite skrextraordinary. Mines and explosive devices left behind through the north where russia has pulled out. He said this was deliberate. This was a deliberate policy, must have been authorized from above, a deliberate attempt to make that stretch of country essentially dangerous and unlivable. And as he says, it leaves ukraine, he believes, the most mined country in the the world right now. Phil, thank you so much, do appreciate that very much. John . Joining me jim sciutto, cnn anchor in chief National Security correspondent and author of the shadow war. Ukrainians say it has already begun and we have these new images of russian material, armor, tanks, men, moving toward the donbas region. What your sources telling you about what this offensive from the russians will look like . It is going to be a bit different from what we saw in the north. At least the nature of the combat were going to see here. Thats because up here where you saw the pitched battles around kyiv, for instance, Russian Forces failed to encircle here, lots of forests up there, that allowed Ukrainian Forces to am bush those Russian Convoys from the forests, from protected areas. Out here it is much more wide open land. This is the bread basket of ukraine. Picture open fields, that kind of combat. It means more armor on armor. Means trench warfare. There are trenches out here, you know, world war ii, world war i style. And thats why youre seeing u. S. Officials and its partners focusing on sending a different kind of weaponry. Some of the same stuff we saw up here, antitank missiles, but greater emphasis on heavy stuff, like armor, like artillery pieces. That sort of thing. A different kind of combat and arguably even bloodier. Look, we have a picture of what youre talking about there in terms of terrain here. You see wide open, nowhere to hide. Nowhere to hide here, why youre much more likely to see armor on armor. These are the t72 tanks that the ukrainians want. I was curious to hear john kirby yesterday say that the time between when President Biden makes a commitment to new material to the time it arrives in ukraine is four to six days, but does that mean, you know, does that mean over here in the east, does that mean they can get it all the way from poland, romania, to where it needs to be on what this new front will be . By the way, john, that stood out to me as well from the briefing because thats a remarkable time frame from a phone call in washington to getting weapons into the hands of fighters here. It shows that the supply lines that the u. S. partners and the ukrainians, by the way, that get it first to a place like poland where the u. S. Air fields are or nato air fields with u. S. Forces all the way across the country. Listen, it is further away. You cant fly it in here. It is going to be a challenge. But it has been a failure of Russian Forces so far to be able to cut off those supply lines. They tried. One reason they have been dropping more missiles on Air Fields Out here in the western part of the country on roads, et cetera. They havent been able to cut it off. Keeping it going, it is a challenge. One thing is stuck in my mind too. Eight years ago, i was covering the first russian invasion of ukraine, started down here in crimea, the u. S. Ambassador at the time told me watch the movie fury, if you remember this, world war ii tank movie, you have tank on tank battles. Thats what they were seeing out there in 2014. But in a much smaller scale. The size of the Russian Force coming in bigger, the capability of the ukrainian force much bigger, more armor, et cetera. Look up that movie fury again and that could give you a vision of the kind of fighting well see in the coming weeks. Ill put it in my queue immediately. Logistics will be a huge part of this. The russians so far have not proven adept, at least not in this conflict on that front. Jim sciutto, great to talk to you. Thank you very much. Brianna . This morning i spoke with the military governor of the Donetsk Region about these reports of a Chemical Attack in mariupol. The Russian Military convoy heading toward his region and the battle ahead. Here is part of our conversation. Mr. Kirilenko, thank you for being with us this morning. Im wondering if you can tell us about this report that a Chemical Attack of some sort has happened in mariupol. Have you heard anything about this . Are you able to confirm this . Translator yes, indeed. I have seen this report and i have the latest information from the scene. I have just been interviewing incident reports on this. And we know that last night around midnight a drone dropped some so far unknown explosive device and the people that were in the area, in and around the mariupol metal plant, these were three people, they began to feel unwell. We know that the city is under see siege, so it is difficult to receive Accurate Information and to be in touch with the people, with the population, and so but what we have heard is that they there were three people who were affected and that they were taken to hospital, taken to hospital, they were they were given medical assistance. And at the moment, their lives are not in danger. Now, i must say that these are very literally recent reports from the scene. Theyre reports that im receiving. So i cannot 100 confirm or comment on them. I can personally confirm that there was this fact that this has happened, and that it is fortunate that the people that were around there, our defenders did not receive life threatening injuries. So thank you so much for detailing that for us. Can you give us a sense of the casualtys . Do you know how many people, even approximately have died in mariupol and donetsk and talk to us a little bit about the difficulty in being able to get an accurate count on that. Translator taking information from different sources, we can speak of Tens Of Thousands of people who died, and to be more precise, but this figure has to be checked very carefully. We are currently discussing 20 to 22,000 people dead in mariupol. And this and what i want to draw peoples attention to is that since the sanctions pressure put on the Russian Federation by our western partners, the eu and the u. S. , and these very stringent factions, packages, the enemy has changed tactics. And they are currently they blocked the city in such a way that theyre not letting people leave on their private vehicles. And stopping people leaving stopping civilians leaving the city. And what theyre doing now is they are using mobile crematoriums, mobile cremation machines, and also taking people out of the taking bodies of the dead in the streets and the dead from collapsing buildings, theyre taking them out into the territory and not controlled by ukraine and destroying the bodies there. So theyre hiding since the emergence of the evidence of war crimes in bucha and evidence of genocide, they are now hiding the evidence and using these mobile Cremation Chambers and theyre taking bodies out of mariupol into the territory controlled by russia. Now, thats from mariupol. Regarding elsewhere in Donetsk Region, the information we have is 237 people dead, and 758 people wounded. Mr. Kyrylenko, thank you for speaking with us. We would love to get updates from you there in donetsk. We appreciate your time. Thank you very much. Well hold on. Glory to ukraine. Russian troops leaving behind scores of unexploded bombs in northern ukraine. Cnns Fred Pleitgen will be meeting with the people responsible for dismantling them. And then moments ago, Vladimir Putin making rare remarks in public, telling lies, telling an alternate reality. And in the United States, the white house is bracing for a brutal inflation report. Saying that today they are using the same over land routes they have been using over the last few weeks, saying that those are quite sophisticated and this whole process begins according to the senior u. And allies eased those supply fears somewhat by promising to release millions of barrels of oil from emergency reserves. The fear now is around demand, that strict covid lockdowns in shanghai and other chinese cities could impact one of the Worlds Largest oil consumers. Reporter im max foster in london. The Ukrainian Embassy in ireland is calling for a ban on the russian pro war symbol z. Thats after a video emerged on sunday, showing a convoy of vehicles displaying it while traveling down one of dublins busiest highways. Calling it a symbol of killings and atrocity, the embassy said all democratic states must ban its use. The character which interestingly doesnt feature in russias alphabet has become a symbol of putins invasion since Russian Military vehicles invaded ukraine in february, displaying the distinctive mark. And now that Russian Forces have pulled out of kyiv, were getting a clearer picture of the destruction that they left behind. It is really a grim scene. Devastation in every direction, and thats not the worst of it. As Cnns Frederik Pleitgen reports. Reporter the tour is a sad routine for the body collectors in the outskirts of kyiv. Finding corpses has become eerily normal here. A house destroyed by an artillery strike, a body burned beyond recognition. A mangled car wreck, two bodies burned beyond recognition. A house that was occupied by Russian Troops, an elderly lady dead in the bedroom. These bodies evidence of a brutal Russian Occupation and then a fierce fight by the Underdog Ukrainians to drive them out. A fight 81yearold katerina witnessed up close in her village. There were explosions, explosions from all sides, it was scary, she tells me. I am in my house, i crossed myself and lie down and then i hear how it thundered and all the Windows In The House were broken. The ukrainians tell us the Russian Troops didnt even bother collecting most of their own dead. More than a week after Vladimir Putins army was pushed out of here, they showed us the body of what they say was a russian soldier still laying in the woods. And thats not all, they left behind. This Demining Unit says they found hundreds of tons of unexploded ordinance in just a matter of days, including Cluster Munitions like this bomblet even though the russians deny using them. These weapons are extremely dangerous for civilians who might accidentally touch them, the commander says. There are about 50 such elements in one bomb, he says. This say high explosive Fragmentation Bomb to kill people, designed just to kill people. They blow up the Cluster Bomblet on the spot and move the heavier bombs to a different location for a massive controlled explosion. The body collecting, the mine sweeping, and the clearing up of wreckage are just starting in this area. And yet this pile of demolished vehicles both military and civilian already towers in the kyiv suburb of irpin. If you had to picture russias attempt to try and take the ukrainian capital kyiv, it would probably look a lot like this. Destruction on a massive scale and absolutely nothing to show for it. Russias military was humiliated by the ukrainians and caused a lot of harm in the process. And they devastated scores of families at Irpin Cemetery the newly widowed weep at funerals for the fallen. Ala, her husband ihor fought alongside their 21yearold son in irpin and died in his arms on the battlefield. Yulia, wife of dmytro, killed by a russian mortar shell. And tatiana, her husband alexander promised her he would come back in a few hours, but was killed defending his neighborhood. Im very proud of him, tatiana says, hes a hero, we have many people in ukraine who have not fled and are defending their homes. Sasha died just 200 meeters from our house where we lived. Laying the dead to rest, another sad task that have become all too proficient at performing in this area. Close by, the next funeral is already under way. Fred pleitgen, cnn, irpin, ukraine. Just in to cnn, Vladimir Putin speaking publicly about the war in ukraine, telling lies and painting a reality that doesnt exist. What he said and what the world should be taking from this. Hes with the belarusian leader there lukashenko on this road trip together. Despite the military setbacks that russia has suffered in and around kyiv, putin claimed that russia has achieved its military goals. And even weeks after the unprovoked invasion of a neighbor he made the absurd claim he had no other choice. The Main Objective is to help the people in the donbas region and the peoples republic of donbas. The kyiv authorities prompted by the west refused to stand by the minsk agreements that were aimed at a peaceful settlement in the donbas and the peoples republics. What were doing, were helping people. Were saving them from nazis in the first place. And on the other hand, protecting russia, taking measures to protect russias security. And obvious we had no choice. It was the right thing to do and i have no doubt the objectives will be achieved. Joining me now, cnns Senior Global Affairs analyst Bianna Golodryga golodryga. The bizarre images aside, interesting to hear Vladimir Putin, weeks and weeks into this invasion, using this type of language. What is going on here . They were visiting a Space Facility in eastern russia and, yes, i found him to be very defensive. I didnt hear the question that was posed at him, this was russian state media, i cant believe it was a hard hitting question. He chose this opportunity to lay out in defense of what russia has been doing and their special Military Operation here in the donbas region. He didnt talk about kyiv or anything else, the plan a that did not go according to plan, but once again, we hear him say we were there to liberate the people, here to save ukrainians, as bizarre and wild as that sounds, given the images and the brutality that were seeing unleashed upon ukrainians and god knows what were going to see coming out of mariupol. Hes saying we were provoked to come in, right, and we were threatened here, in russia. This nazification, the nationalism that has been growing within ukraine was posing a threat not only to ukrainians in his words but to russia and thus this was a justifiable special Military Operation and as you heard, in his terms, it is going to according to plan. Six weeks in, the when of this that strikes me as much as the what. Said six weeks in, he is still saying this kind of stuff. You also noted there is some people who say, putin doesnt actually know how bad the defeat has been for Russian Troops in and around kyiv. The way he talked to you indicates he knows whats going on. There is a difference between what led up to the war and the information that he was given in terms of how he would be received and how quickly this operation would have unfolded in three days they would have taken kyiv. That that clearly didnt happen. But in terms of what is going on a day to day basis, i dont buy this argument that hes clueless. Just yesterday with the chancellor from austria, he called the claims and the massacre out of bucha as fake news. And this is all staged, right. He knows whats going on to the detail of every little city in which his forces are unlyeashin their brutality. It does indicate the stakes are so incredibly high there. I think the world watching very closely what will happen there in the next few days. Bianna golodryga, thank you for being with us. Ukrainian marines in the besieged port city of mariupol say they will hold on, quote, Until The End. Theyre surrounded by Russian Forces, theyre running low on supplies, were live on the ground in ukraine. Plus, we have Breaking News, a brandnew report on inflation just released. Most common side effects were nausea and tiredness. Ask about ubrelvy, the anytime, anywhere migraine medicine. Breaking moments ago, brandnew numbers on inflation, cnn chief Business Correspondent Christine Romans joins us. The Inflation Rate over the past year, a big number, it is as expected and it is the hottest inflation since 1982. Thats a broken record there. You know what it all is, gas, shelter, food. These are three things that people really cant do without, right . This is why you have so many people souring on the u. S. Economy, consumers rather, because theyre feeling this inflation. Month on month increase, it tells you incrementally where youre going, that was up 1. 2 , rare to see a big pop just in one month like this. I want to say this is Until The End of march. And as youve been reporting, weve been reporting, oil prices and gas prices have been coming down. So in a way, this Consumer Price number is looking in the rear view mirror. Some economists are hoping this is the peak, the worst of it, and things begin to moderate into the summer. As you know, the white house is releasing a Million Barrels per day of oil, pushing oil of strategic stockpiles too. A lot of things theyre doing to ease the oil part of it. You look at the sectors, it is gas, shelter, food, used cars, these are numbers that year over year have had big, big increases in prices and that continues again here in the month. 8. 5 number, thats a big number. Big number. Crazy to think, though. That the market might be okay with it, because it is exactly in line with what they were expecting today. It is not worse than what they expected. And combined with measures being taken by the Biden Administration that they can try to keep energy and gas prices low, like changing the Ethanol Rules for the summer. Changing the Ethanol Rules for the summer, which the white house says will take ten cents a gallon off of gasoline. Gasoline prices have been coming down slowly, but they have been coming down closer to 4 now. Oil prices well off that, 130 a barrel we saw that we saw at the begin of the russian invasion. The fed is the inflation fighter. The fed is expected aggressively tackle if youre in the market to borrow money, youre Borrowing Costs will be rising and that is one of the ways theyll try to the Federal Reserve is trying to cool down this inflation. Bank of america overnight and Deutsche Bank last week has some concerns about what will happen if the fed acts maybe too aggressive. And worried about a shock, a shock to the american economy, that if the fed is really aggressive here, sure, theyre going to break the back of inflation, but might push the u. S. Economy into recession or a shock there. That Sis A Fine Line to walk. Most dont expect a recession. The u. S. Is one of the strongest economies in the world here now and is less reliant on russian oil than europe, for example. But there are those calls out there saying be careful here, the risks of recession are rising. Walk with me for a second. What is interesting about this is you can see the impact that inflation has already had on peoples view of where the economy is. You see 63 say the economy is bad, 31 say it is good. Thats despite, by the way, very low Unemployment Number. That Unemployment Number would be a dream in any administration. That is a 50year low for the Unemployment Rate and, in fact, when you talk to american workers, theyre expecting raises this year, big raises this year, hopping jobs, theyre very satisfied with what theyre finding on the labor market. To see such a bad number on the economy, it is all about inflation. Inflation is the headline that gets all of the attention. And, you know, you talk to economists, they say youve seen report new entrepreneurship, you got new business owners, wages that are rising, not as fast as inflation in some parts, but and all this flush Bank Accounts for many, many households. Were in a much better position today than after the great recession. But these numbers say people dont feel that. Putting them in a mood. You ask them why the economy is bad in their mind, they say inflation. 8. 5 today, highest increase we have seen 82. Thank you very much for that. We have new details on this frightening story out of washington. Two men accused of impersonating Homeland Security agents. The suspects now telling their side of the story. Ukrainian Officials Say there could be 20,000 deaths inside mariupol. Were joined next by a woman who was trapped inside for weeks and made a harrowing escape. But are these lines s enough . Got termites . Dont call any pro, Call The Orkin pro. Orkin. The best in pests. President zelenskyy says weeks of relentless russian bombardment have left Tens Of Thousands dead in the besieged city of mariupol. Earlier today i spoke with anna who was able to escape from mariupol after she and her family survived a harrowing 23 days hiding in frigid basements without electricity and consuming what should have been considered undrinkable water from rusty pipes. Here is part of our conversation. Anna, thank you so much for joining us. You spent 22 days in mariupol, 14 days in a shelter there. Tell us what the bombing was like. Translator yes, i must say indeed i spent the last 14 days in the shelter. Before that i spent all the time in my mothers cellar. And where she keeps preserves. And the situation was such that there was shells dropping all the time and planes whizzing past and the sound of bombs dropping, the ground shaking, and when this happens, you cant breathe. It is impossible to describe. It is not even something ive ever seen in films, when things are whizzing past you, and you know a bomb can drop any moment. And the more the closer the planes flying, the more the louder the sound. It is just i dont even know how to describe it. I know you escaped with your husband and his parents and a grandparent parent as well as your brother and your mother, all of you crammed into a car. Can you tell us, first off, how you were able to do that. I understand your fatherinlaw actually stole a battery out of his damaged car to use on another vehicle that got you out. Translator yes, indeed. We had originally had three cars, one was my motherinlaws and two were my father in laws. And this third car was parked in a car park in a fourstory building. So what happened was that my motherinlaws car was borrowed by somebody who then disappeared. We dont know what happened to him, whether he was killed or whether he managed to escape and never came back. So the second car was parked in the street and a shrapnel got into it. It was hit by shrapnel and it caught fire. So and the third car didnt have a battery. It was parked in the building and without a battery. So my fatherinlaw had to quickly rescue the battery from the burning car, and fit it to the battery in the parked car, and fortunately he was able to do it without injuring himself and thats the only way that we could leave. The people who had cars parked in the street, they were all burned very quickly and people from that building, i dont know where even whether they got out of the city. Thank god you were able to get out. Can you tell us a little bit about how long that took, how many russian checkpoints you went through and what that was like . Yes, well, first of all, i must say it was difficult to actually get into the car because bombs were dropping all the time, everything was burning around, there were lots of dead bodies and just to leave the shelter, the basement of the building where we were in, it was almost impossible. So there was a quiet it was a lull in the bombing, and we took advantage of that and we came out and decided to run at that point. And as we were going through the city, we saw all the horror, all the buildings including ours, our ninestory building and all the buildings were destroyed or had holes in them. There were dead bodies in the streets. I didnt really i didnt really see it all in detail because i didnt want to take it all in. And then, yes, we reached a checkpoint, it was a checkpoint that belonged to the donetsk peoples republic because they checked our passports and they checked our residence addresses that is in the passport. And they also questioned my husband. But then they let us go, we went toward berdyansk and berdyansk we came across the russian checkpoint. And indeed over there they actually got everybody out of the car and they inspected my husband, all the men, inspected men for signs of, you know, belonging to battle contingents. And then my husband from his neck to down his arm, and this was 3 00 a. M. , so they spent ten minutes inspecting his arm with a torch, they were looking for nazi symbols and we were shocked because indeed they decided that theyre fighting nazis. It was so shocking to us, they were looking for nazi symbols on us. But actually it is also hypocritical because theyre not fighting nazis, they are destroying the civilian population of mariupol, they are simply exterminating civilians. So this whole nazi Fighting Business is just hypocrisy. Anna, tell me about your father. Hes still in mariupol. Translator yes, indeed. My father was a civilian, but when the war started he decided to join Territorial Defense to defend his family, his city, to defend the borders, so he and my uncle joined Territorial Defense. And until very recently i had no communication with them. I had no idea whether they were dead or alive. And i just found out that my uncle has been killed. He was killed by a mortar shell. And my father was hit by a collapsing building. And he broke his leg. And right now he is in a serious que condition, he only has painkillers, so hes slowly dying because he hasnt got the right medication. And there was no way to get it to him. Anna, i am so sorry for what your father is going through. Im so sorry for the loss of your uncle. Im so glad that we can speak to you and that you are safe with many members of your family, i appreciate you telling us your story this morning. Thank you. Thank you.
