Expectations and able to execute, but now he has a family like andy mentioned and thats taking priority, as the time comes for everybody but hell be remembered as the greatest. No question. Stay with us, all of you. The Breaking News this hour. Seven time super bowl champion tom brady is retiring from football. He removed all doubt. The 44yearold quarterback played just 22 nfl seasons, including 20 seasons with the new england patriots. Won seven super bowls. Brady confirming the news on social media via a post on instagram saying, among other things, its been a thrilling ride. Listen, as a fan, its been thrilling to watch his career as well. He won three Nfl Mvp Awards and a 15 time pro bowl election. He was the 199th pick in the 2000 nfl draft and ranks first in all time completions, touchdowns, and super bowl mvps. I mean, theres one for the underdogs right there, jim, an example for anybody who thinks theyre not in the top ten thaur n not going to make it, one name, tom brady. To the late selection, drove him. That gave him competitive drive. The six teams that picked ahead of him before he was eventually selected 199th. I want to read from his statement here. Ive always believed the sport of football is an allin proposition. If 100 competitive commitment isnt there, you wont succeed. Success is what i love so much about our game. There is a physical, mental and emotional challenge every single day that has allowed me to maximize my highest potential and ive tried my very best these past 22 years. There were no shortcuts to success on the field or in life. This is difficult for me to write but here it goes. I am not going to make that competitive commitment anymore. I have loved my nfl career and now it is time to focus my time and energy on other things that require my attention. He goes on, ive done a lot of reflecting the last week and asked difficult questions and so proud what we have achieved, my teammates, coaches, fellow competitors and fans deserve 100 of me but right now, its best i leave the field of play to the next generation to dedicated and committed athletes. We still have andy scholes here with us. Carolyn manno. His bucs teammates, bucs fans, the city of tampa, the glazer family, owner of the bucs as well as his head coach of the bucs, bucs coaches. He does not mention anywhere in that statement that other team he played for, the new england patriots, coach Bill Belichick. The team he won six super bowls before his seventh with the tom brady bucs. That is, clearly, a deliberate omission, pretty remarkable one, wouldnt you say . Well, yeah. And this was definitely a very long post. Maybe felt like it was too long, but did write a goodbye to patriots and fans when he left them and went on to bucs and maybe considered that to be goodbye to new england and to Bill Belichick and whatnot, and we revisited that when the bucs went to new england and played there this season, but it is fascinating he did not at least mention those times at all. 20 years, nine super bowl appearances, six super bowl championships. Definitely, it was a run and dynasty that will probably never be matched again in the history of football. And it did go unmentioned, so that is an interesting tidbit. This it wasnt a tweet, wasnt for a lack of characters for not including the patriots but maybe hear more in the hours and days to come. We have Carolyn Manno with us as well. And as he mentioned in his post, he said its best i leave the field of play to the next generation of dedicated and committed athletes. Talk about that next generation, specifically, the next generation of quarterbacks who really looked up to him as a model for who to emulate. Oh, yes, exciting. I mean, are we going to see another tom brady right around the corner . No, thats going to take decades. I mean, youre looking at more than 20 years of accomplishments that might never be touched, but this is how it goes in sports. Its cyclical. Time comes for everybody. Rafael nadal contemplating retirement months before rin w winning another and the point about new england, he has proven hes really meticulous and compartmentalizing how hes feeling when hes feeling it. And so i think andy is spot on there. He did say goodbye to new england. He did move on to tampa and he moved there with his family and so, maybe thats part of this kind of being in the moment right now and what hes feeling right now, but just even look at what were going to see in the super bowl with a kid like joe burrow whos seemingly proven he could be the next great quarterback. Patrick mahomes, even though he had an unfortunate outing last weekend. A lot of stars but not another tom brady for quite a while. His resume, his demeanor both on and off the field. The way hes revered and respected, the way he handles himself, jim, also part of why this is really unfortunate for him personally to have the news come out the way he did where he wasnt able to initially control the narrative because he respects the Young Players in the league and didnt want that to happen right before the super bowl. Its just been a remarkable super bowl but this happens in sports. Remarkable to think that he almost didnt make it to the nfl, right, he was drafted 199th in the sixth round. Six quarterbacks ahead of him and yet, as you noted earlier, he went out the best. 22 years later. Most yards. Most touchdown passes. You think of an athlete because the exit is difficult to do when you have been one of the greatest, a great athlete and oftentimes, we see those exits are not so great. Hes ending on a high. Can you think of another athlete whos gone out on such a high, still at the top of his or her game . Unless we want to say Michael Jordan on the wizards just didnt happen, then would be like that if Michael Jordan just ended career with the six nba Championship Ring there, but the tom brady story, jim, safe to say, its never going to be replicated ever. You can say it. I mentioned over the weekend, we always say theres not another Michael Jordan. Kobe and lebron came along. They werent jordan but filled the void. Never a guy drafted in the sixth round 199th overall originally a huge underdog story that turns into the greatest champion weve ever seen. Its almost like a hollywood script too good to be true. Yeah. It would be tough to write that screen play. As weve noted many times on this broadcast and before, brady very close with his family. Has spoken about how this decision to retire would be a family decision. Here is him just last week speaking about his wife and three children. One thing is you get older, an athlete, for me experiencing a lot of Different Things over the course of my career. A lot of Family Things that take place and, you know, my situation, it could be my parents, but also, i have kids and so just a lot of things that happen in your life, like all of us, you know, as you get older, theres more that you take on. I still obviously love going out there and competing but on the other side of that, theres a lot of Family Things that are very important to me. Well, you see him there as he goes out a tenth of a buccaneer but i think he played for another team. Ill try to recall the name, before he joined the bucs a couple of years ago. Jim mcbride with the boston globe, covering that team, the patriots. Jim, i mean, i got to ask you, one, what he meant to the patriots and not just to the boston area or massachusetts but when you look at patriots followers, this extends many states beyond to a big chunk of new england and beyond. How Big A Sports Hero in that time and is there anyone comparable . Yeah, he joins the Mount Rushmore of football with bobby orr and larry bird and bill russell and ted williams. Just along with Bill Belichick and robert kraft, he helped transform that franchise into a perennial super bowl contender and really, the envy of every professional franchise in the world, not just in the nfl. So what he meant to new england was huge. I dont think, most die hard prosecutor Patriots Fans didnt want to see him leave. Moves the needle in new england. Was he going to retire or not, it was still the biggest story in boston and hasnt played there for two years. His impact, immeasurable. On the field and off. I mean, this was a career that was not scandal plagued and he was a model athlete, right, deflategate aside, there were no real controversies surrounding him and people turned to him and there was a lot of pressure on him and his family, married to a super model there, to be that shining example of what it means to so many people, to be the hero not only in the city and the state but really for an entire league. And really, you said it perfectly. Pressure was what he always thrived in, whether it was on the feield or off the field. Never a situation, certainly a football game, that seemed too big for hip and as he got older and more mature in his career, his offfield decisions, same thing. Deflategate, in the grand scheme, that will be considered a blip of history. When you write the tom brady book, it will not be deflategate but a side note somewhere. Its been an amazing career. Like reminding folks that Paul Mccartney was in a band before wings. No offfield controversies but also known to be very good to his teammates. Im thinking a couple of weeks ago, right, he knew gronkowski, his tight end, needed a few extra yards and receptions to get a bonus and he made sure he threw to him. Thats part of his reputation as well, is it not . Absolutely. You talk to a rookie on first day in new england and all say the same story about tom. He comes up to them and introduces himself and says, im tom brady, and most are gob smacked, like we know who you are. He treated his teammates really well. He was loved in that locker room and set the tone in that locker room because even though he was the best player and multiple super bowl winner, always the hardest worker in the room and i think everything felt that. If this guy is the hardest worker, how can we take a day off . Even with the Antonio Brown and the controversial decision off field, you had Tom Brady Reach Out to him and support him and say he needs the time to go through whatever he is going through. A real class act there. Once again, the Breaking News, Seven Time Super Bowl champ, tom brady, the g. O. A. T. , the nfl officially leaving the sport, retiring after 20 seasons. In usa today oped this morning, congressman fred upton and david cicilini. As public officials, it is our sacred duty to do all we can to keep our communities safe. With active shooter events becoming all too common, we have an obligation to act. So joining me now, two members of congress, rhode island david cicilini. Congressman, explain how this would work. The intention here is to make this a federal system where some have similar systems in place. This directs the Department Of Justice to develop a system for active shooter alert and make it available to local Law Enforcement, local communities to the states and best ensure practices are followed so Community Members know when an active shooter action is in place. Between 2000 and 2019, there have been 333 active shooting incidents. And it puts people and Police Officers in danger, this will allow information immediately about the dangers present during an active shooting. Congressman upton, will this get republican support . It will. I looked at my district and weve had a number of active shootings. In fact, i was at a school doing and literally while i was there, they did an active shooting drill. But we had an issue in kalamazoo, michigan, six folks were shot. Some were killed. A couple of bailiffs that were killed as well at a courthouse, and this is going to work. Its going to be bipartisan from the getgo and id like to think this we can have this on the floor the next couple of weeks. The amber alert model for kidnappings, its credited by some with saving hundreds of childrens lives since it was put into place. I do have to ask you and with respect, given that there are many elements to active shooting events, including the kinds of weapons that are accessible to folks and who can get them, can there be a credible congressional response to these events without addressing guns more broadly . I wonder if i could begin with you, Congressman Ciciline but also you, congressman upton. I have a number of bills to restrict use of firearms and Assault Weapon Bans and other pieces of legislation. This is a Public Safety measure. Whatever your position is on the second amendment, this is about keeping communities safe during an active shooting incident. We, as you say, with amber alert, saved thousands of children, we can do the same for Police Officers, for members of the community who, you know, might be drawn to an active shooting because they have a child in school or have a Family Member in that area. And this is ensure people immediately get Accurate Information of the dangers. Of course, we have to do much more in my view to reduce the availability of guns in this country and reduce gun violence. Theres a number of bills that are pending but this is a bill that really focuses on protecting Police Officers, protecting members of the community in the most dangerous circumstances. Congressman upton, you, as you know but our viewers might not know, joined democrats in supporting whats known as hr8, a bipartisan Background Checks plan. Does a measure like that still have a shot in the current environment . Well, you know, we passed hr8. A background check. It complies with the michigan law, on the books for decades. Its the senate that failed to take meaningful steps forward. Youd like to think they have a hearing that moves a bill but this bill, its a Public Safety bill. It is going to protect Law Enforcement. But its going to protect the average joe, someone who may or may not inadvertently walk into a neighborhood where youve got something going on and because they dont have cnn on in the car or the radio, theyre not going to know whats going on. This is really a Public Safety measure that only helps all of our communities to a safer place. Youre both aware of the politics of this, and weve been down this path so many times, often in the wake of shootings. After some of the worst shootings, sandy hook going back but more recently, and each time, efforts with broader legislation have come up short. I wonder, when you meet with members of the public, do you find, and by the way, both parties, do you find theyve run out of patience with this and say, listen, please get something done . In other words, do you notice a difference when you go out into the real world outside of the halls of congress, that folks are ready for broader change . Oh, absolutely. Look, i hear about this issue all the time from my constituents. They have been demanding congress to move on comprehensive common sense gun safety legislation for a very long time. I fought for it when i was in the state legislature. I fought it as a founding mayor of illegal guns and in congress, tremendous frustration. By introducing this bipartisan bill on this one issue, be sure to continue to fight on all the other issues which are incredibly important. People are demanding we do more to combat violence all across this country. Congressman upton, you mentioned the bipartisan Background Checks bill. That got through the house, stopped in the senate, as often happens. Theres a tighter divide there, but you say this one will get through both chambers. This is going to go. This is going to go. Were on a track to get it up during police week in may. Were going to be, david introduces it today, well have bipartisan support for it. Cosponsors. Close to getting a commitment from the speaker, in fact, they have it on the house floor for a debate. It will be under suspension of the rules, which means it needs to pass by twothirds vote. I am convinced this will pass overwhelmingly in the house and certainly sends a signal to the senate and its going to happen iss as it should, overdue. Before we go, congressman, in terms of broader measures, this is a moment when democrats have the house and senate and the presidency granted slim margins in each, but granted as you know well, democrats more supportive of broader measures like weve been discussing here. If democrats couldnt get measures like, for instance, Assault Weapons Bans or high magazine weapons ban, if they couldnt get it done now, should folks at home think its ever going to get done . No, look, i think we have to demonstrate were committed to those issues and keep fighting for them. The progress on this has been obviously too slow and ive been fighting, i think as many of my colleagues have for a very long time, and were going to continue to fight for it, but i dont think they would give up because they have a right to live in their communities free from gun violence and congress has much more work to do. And although our majorities are slim, well try to grow them and get this done and make sure that every Single Community is safe from gun violence. We appreciate your effort on this, this particular bill and we also appreciate you coming on together. Congressman fred upton, david cicilline. You bet. Reporting this morning on just how far former President Donald Trump went this his attempt to have Voting Machines seized after the 2020 election. We have now learned that trumps advisers drafted not one but two versions of an executive order. One directing the Department Of Defense to take hold of those machines and the other telling the department of Homeland Security to seize them. Multiple efforts to overturn the election. Telling cnn these developments were part of a broader plan here, but a lot more detail than we knew. Cnn Law Enforcement correspondent whitney wild joins us now with more. So whitney, we knew about a drafted order for d. O. D. D. H. S. Is new. I suppose the question is, were they shopping around . Right, was he shopping around to see who he could get these through . I think thats a completely legitimate question. Werer they just looking for an audience to carry it forward . Thats the major question the House Select Committee will want the answer to. Let me back up and give you the nuts and bolts of what we know now. The second order in many ways reflects the same purpose as the executive order. To seize Voting Machines similar to what was floating around the white house to do the same thing. Its unclear who put the pen to paper, of course and the important thing is this didnt go anywhere but sources tell us the idea of seizing Voting Machines from states trump lost was the brain child of retired colonel Phil Walldren and michael flynn. Both continued pushing the narrative that the 2020 election was stolen. Rudy giuliani has been spearheading the efforts of the big lie but we learned that giuliani coached Ken Cucinelli and told them did not have the authority and told cnn those conversations never materialized into anything or drafting an executive order. Ken very clearly trying to distance himself from what is turning into a pretty huge mess. The New York Times is reporting that President Trump directed giuliani to reach out to the department of Homeland Security. Now the House Select Committee is looking into this effort to draft this executive order, specifically how it began, specifically the roles of giuliani, walldren and former trump attorney Sydney Powell and this is the thing, the House Select Committee has always been trying to get to is who ordered it . Who told who to do it . That is the key question. More details coming to light every day. Witnesses to testify to that. Whitney wild, thanks very much. It is telling even someone like Rudy Giuliani was telling to go too far. May be impeached for it. Ryan lizza, cnn political analyst. Weve asked this question before but i think it bears reasking at this point. In terms of when you think republicans in congress and Republican Voters may start to turn away from President Trump, is it headlines . Is it reporting like this that we will start to see that trend occur . Im asking because weve seen members of Congress Sort of distance themselves from trumps statements over the weekend that he would pardon those who participated and were convicted in the January 6th Insurrection and now theres new ap reporting that suggests the 44 , thats not the majority but 44 of republicans say they dont want trump to run for president again. Its such an interesting and important question because what causes republicans, especially in congress, reporters asking every day about trump and what causes them to either be ambiguous about what they think with President Trump or outright support him is, of course, the Ironclad Grip that trump has had on Republican Voters. And we did see, the polling has been very interesting on this. After january 6th, there was a significant drop and there was that window that opened that a lot of Senior Republicans tried to use to sort of get rid of trump, put him in the rearview mirror. Mcconnell. Liz cheney. Even Kevin Mccarthy for a brief moment. What happened after that, the dynamic shifted, trump was sort of super empowered, support for him among republicans shot up. But as you point out, very recently, that has started to change and im not sure what the change is, if its the sort of continued cycle of outrages and Living In The Past and relitigating 2020 where a lot of republicans are saying, this doesnt seem wise for the future, but we are in a moment here where maybe theres a Tipping Point that will come where he will lose that grip. Now, you know, i wouldnt predict that. The bond is pretty strong, and americans are living in, like, separate media ecosystems. A lot of his strongest supporters are living on the fumes of his lies, but that has been a recent development worth watching. I mean, to be fair, been watching that for a number of years, right. The Tipping Point hasnt arrived. Thats the politics though. Lett talk about the potential, i suppose, more substantial result of all of this. You have court and Legal Investigations in atlanta and elsewhere, as businesses, attempts to interfere with the election. With the January 6th Committee, if they bring this all together, they have witnesses to corroborate further trumps efforts to overturn the election in a whole host of ways, lets be frank. Executive orders being one part of that. Whats the result . The Senate Already tried him and missed an opportunity. Didnt have the votes to bar him from running again. So whats the end result beyond a potential political outcome of the january 6th Committee Investigation . Its a great question. Remember, mitch mcconnell, the most, probably the most important speech during impeachment was his speech when he said im not going to vote to indict, or sorry, to convict, but he suggested this isnt the end of the legal remedies to deal with donald trump, and he strongly, he made the point essentially that the criminal Justice System could deal with donald trump and were seeing that, those gears continue to go to work but, you know, i think thats the most likely avenue because frankly the January 6th Committee is doing a very thorough and important job. That report is going to come out before the midterm elections, but most people think the republicans are going to win the midterm elections. Its just a normal first year midterm of new president s, a backlash against the president s. And if the democrats put out this report, its extremely damning about President Trump p. It becomes a bit of a partisan football as these things always do and as republicans win the midterms, you could easily see republicans say, that issue was litigated, that was central to the midterms and the public awarded, you know, thats, i think democrats have to decide how much they want to make issue a referendum. An argument has been made before with trump releasing his taxes. He never did it. And then after he was elected, some folks say, thats already been litigated in the election. Ryan lizza, thank you so much. Exactly. Thanks, ryan. Thanks guys. Pfizer expected to seek Emergency Authorization as early as today for its Covid Vaccine for kids under the age of 5. Sources telling cnn a Covid Vaccine for kids under 5 years old could be available by the end of the month. Pfizer is expected to ask the fda to authorize its two dose regimen for children ages 6 months to five years early as today. If authorized quickly, shots could be going into little arms within weeks. I want to bring in the Associate Dean of Public Health at brown university. Weve had a lot of troubling news the last few weeks. This is indeed welcome news. Talk about the impact that this can have on millions of children and their families. I cant overstate how elated this news has been by parents and families of those kids who are under 5. Ive heard from so many people across the country that they feel like their kids have been left out. These are the kids who are the most difficult to mask, who suffer the most from being isolated, but who are still at risk of covid. Now, covid is, of course, not as serious in those littles as it is in older adults, but it is still among the top ten causes of death for children in the United States and getting those vaccines in arms is a critical part of helping both to prevent covid among little kids and helping to move us all a little bit closer back to normal. I will give the caveat, of course, biana, i have not seen the data. If i were at the fda, i would look both to make sure that the vaccine is safe and that it is effective, that it protects those kids from covid. And i hope the fda will do its Due Diligence to make sure the vaccines do do both for those six month to the 5 years old. Of course. And welcoming as this news is, is we have sort of plateaued at a low rate in terms of the vaccination of children weve seen in the u. S. And i would say this is a global tphenomenon. Few children in israel are vaccinated as well. What is it given the amount of time, parents want to see i want to give it time and how effective, that time has come and gone and so many children remain unvaccinated. Why do you think that is and what can be done to reverse that . So i think its two things. The first is, as a parent myself, i understand that you do want to make 100 sure that anything you do to youre kid is going to make them safer, that its not going to put them at risk. So i understand peoples hesitancy, the desire to see the data, make sure these vaccines are safe. Let me be very clear. The vaccines for the 5 to 11 years old are absolutely 100 s safe, and covid is not safe. The risks from covid are real. The second reason we see the plateauing is the campaign of misinformation and disinformation because parents are fearing these things saying, oh, covid isnt as bad in little kids as in adults. Thats true. Car crashes are more likely to kill a kid than covid but you put your kid in a car seat, a seat belt or booster seat, you give them lots of vaccines for things like diphtheria which we dont see in the United States anymore thanks to vaccines. The misinformation has unfortunately led parents to think that not getting vaccinated for covid is not going to put their kids at risk. Let me be clear. The vaccine is so safe and so effective at protecting your kids. Listen, if they dont believe it by listening to doctors like you, reputable doctors like yourself and your colleagues, ask your own doctors at home. Ask your pediatricians, the people that you know and trust and most likely, they will also concur that this is the right thing to do for their children and they should do it right now. Secretary of state Antony Blinken just finished a call with his russian counterpart. The Russian Foreign minister sergey lavrov. When i heard that this was, quote unquote, misquote, i was a bit nervous and perplexed because it seems thats all thats lacking right now from full on confrontation. If theres a miscalculation, if theres some sort of gunfire by the hands of a russian or ukrainian, this could set everything off. Well, thats right. If you look at the russian play book and at the soviet play book before that, often there is an event that gets blown out of proportion, misconstrued, that leads to much bigger conflict or is also a way of distracting attention and then, boom, the actual invasion occurs somewhere else. I think were in this very fraught period right now. On one hand, its important and good that diplomatic talks are still occurring between tony blinken and sergey lavrov. On the other hand, it doesnt seem to be much of a process as it is a continual series of misconnections, right, theyre talking but are they hearing . Susan, you spent a number of years living in moscow and covering moscow. Youre familiar with the russian play book here. I wonder, when you look at these continuing conversations, do you believe russia is open to a diplomatic Solution Offering up to this or that theyre playing for time here to prepare for Military Action . Well, look. Certainly, you have to look at whats in front of you when it comes to Vladimir Putin and one thing i learned covering the early years of his rise to power was it makes sense to pay close t attention to what putin is actually saying. Ive been alarmed since putin wrote an article that would distribute to every Single Member of the russian military, all the russian soldiers essentially saying that ukraine was not a legitimate independent state and rightfully, a part of russia and to me, that had really strong echoes of things that weve heard from putin before, that it behooves us to pay close attention to. You cant negotiate about that and thats the fear that its not a real diplomatic process. And listen, we havent heard from putin publicly on this crisis since december and thats why were eager ly anticipating to hear from him any moment as hes meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister orban in moscow now. Weve spoken about this in the past but we go back to last summer in geneva where President Biden said in terms of what he was hoping for in relationship with putin, he wanted a stable and predictable relationship with him. Here we are now, seven months later, perhaps on the precipice of war. Regardless of whether russia goes in now or whether its a minor incursion or a major one, what does this do for that relationship for the rest of President Bidens term . I think its a very important point, biana. Putin has already pretty radically destabilized the european order at a minimum and the broader geopolitical order. This is already a pretty radical step that hes taken and its almost impossible for me at this point to see a return to the status quo and a return to the period before he sent 30,000 troops to the border with ukraine, and so in that sense, i think the instability will continue for quite some time. Susan glasser, may very well be his intention as regards to ukraine. Thank you very much and thank you very much for all of you for joining us today. Im jim sciutto. Im bianna golodryga.
