biden on it tomorrow. of course, anderson there's questions for the president president facing this. one of those that we asked today or tried to ask him, the new cdc guidance that shortens the isolation period if you tested positive from ten days to five days if you have no symptoms or they are resolving according to the language from the cdc, today i asked him if he thought it should come with a testing recommendation. you saw the doctors saying they believed it should, not just saying you can leave the isolation period as long as you are wearing a mask. which is what the current guidance is. he said that he will talk about it later on, whether he talks about it, or will address it is yet to be seen. >> there's a shortage of at home tests and pcr tests are are tat -- are taking five days. is the white house going to do anything about it? >> the plan that the president has, that is supposed to happen this month in january, to distribute half a billion tests for free to people that sign up online to get one. that is the solution that the administration came up with in part after it was clear in the month of december that as omicron was spreading it was difficult to get your hands on a rapid at home test. which is what you have heard a lot of doctors say is critical to being able to know, should you go to the dinner party? should you send your kids to school, should you do a activity? the questions about the plan are still some pretty big ones. which is when are we going to see the website go live? how long will it take for the tests to ship? what if you don't have access to internet? and we are told by the officials that they are in the precurement process of that. they are figuring out which companies will supply the half a billion tests and they have not been easy to get your hands on. it will be a big question facing the president. it's difficult to get your hands on a rapid test and it's soming that the president acknowledged they came up short on. >> appreciate it. more on the impact on children and the impact on children's hospitals. the pfizer booster has been approved for kids ages 12-15. but too late to do anything about the numbers right now. >> we have had staggerering numbers. we have shattered prior records that were established in the delta surge in august of 2021. >> that doctor, texas children's hospital in houston said they saw more than 700 children in one 24 period last week. miguel marquez is there. >> reporter: four month old grayson perry, his tiny belly rapidly expanding, one of many children with covid-19, struggling to breathe. are you afraid they will have to intubate him? >> i don't want to think about out. that's my little girl being away from her little girl. my heart bleeds for her. >> reporter: the iomicron variat ripping through the state and the children's hospital prepare for ing. what is your sense for what the next few weeks holds? >> the bar for resilience keeps moving. we think, we don't know how we can do it again, and we do it again. >> reporter: as they ready for a fourth coronavirus wave, already the er seeing a spike in kids suffering mild sumpymptoms, the parents are seeking testing and bogging down triages for the seriously ill. >> we are seeing patients represent for covid of course posers and mild symptoms and a lot of them are really seeking testing. >> reporter: like previous waves the sickest kids, those needing hospitalizations having a tough time breathing. >> they are getting a lot of respitory symptoms. as we expect. >> reporter: viral spread expected to intensify in the weeks ahead and even if the omicron variant is not as severe -- >> the problem is with so many children, and adults infected, even if the percent, percent of hospitalization rate is lowered, we are still, we could see more children hospitalized over a very short period of time. so, that's certainly putting a strain on the health care resources. >> miguel marquez, cnn, houston, texas. >> let's get perspective from the assistant professor of pediatrics at the irving medical center. doctor, what are you seeing right now in your hospital normals of pediatric cases? >> we are seeing a lot of covid, anderson, like your previous piece mentioned. we are concerned. we are seeing more covid than we have seen in previous waves as everyone is referencing tonight. and it's worrying the worst of the winter has not passed and so we are bracing for what is still to come. >> the new york governor said the state is not in a good place. are hospitalizations for covid up, or is it a symptom of people in the hospital for something else and they end up testing positive for covid? >> i think it's important to answer that question to give people at home a bit of context. so we have been testing children who come to the hospital for any reason for a long time now. so, children before they have routine surgeries and procedures, as well as children who present to emergency rooms and the rate of positive cases coming about back, positive tests coming back is definitely higher, anderson. so that percentage of tests that is coming back positive is higher now than it has been in at any other point. there's without a doubt, more children with covid-19 right now in new york city than ever before. now, did those children show up because they had a broken leg or broken arm and then happened to test positive for covid? versus did they come in for trouble breathing because of covid-19. those still need to be teased out and we know, people seeking to minimize the seriousness of covid-19 in children will hang to that fact. but i think we would be foolish to keep minimizing covid-19 in children at this point in the pandemic. >> let's talk about that, i have a child that is almost 2 years old. i'm terrified that he cannot get vaccinated at this point and doesn't wear a mask at this age. how bad is this variant with kids? >> i share your concerns so, so she much, not just because of my patients, i have a 3 month old at home that cannot be vaccinated either. we are learning so much about the the variant. the data that is coming out in recent weeks about the variant affecting the upper air ways should not necessarily give us relief when it comes to children in the sense that children who get upper airway infections may actually have severe illnesses, right? so for you and me, it may be a cold, for a child and their small air way could lead to hospitalization. now, for context the percentage of children is still small, anderson. >> the percentage of children is still small? >> we have a lot of questions about what the former president was doing. we know he was watching tv. we don't know why he refused to act, but we have an interest in that. we do know a that this was not just a random, you know, riot. there was an intentionality to this entire thing and the intention was to overturn the election, to replace the duly elected president with the one that lost. whether his inaction was in furtherance of a th-- of that, can't know, but we are investigating. we hope to get the information from the archives soon and it will shed light. >> it's been a year and we have heard this. it's the idea of the president of the united states sitting there in the oval office doing nothing when there's an attack on the capital not far away. it's extraordinary. you know, we can't know what exactly was in his mind and programs the records that will be revealed but did he want it to succeed? just by not saying anything. history would have turned out differently and he would somehow remain president? i mean, it's, it's really unthinkable. >> well, it is an amazing circumstance to think of the president of the united states, who took an oath to protect the constitution, and he watched the assault of the peaceful transition of power. it was not right and we need to know if it's in further anance a plot. we have interviewed 340 witnesses. 35,000 documents that have been sent in to us and there's more to come. we have a picture with the testimony that we are receiving, and we hope to be get access to the archives as the lawsuits that the president filed, he was knocked down at the trial court. knocked down and work it through to the appellate court and they said that he did not meet the minimum standard for the court to intervene. we hope the supreme court is seeing that he is only trying to delay, dlaelay, delay, and they don't have to take the case and we can get this done. >> you mention the national archives. why do you think that information in particular may be so relevant? >>ly well, it has everything, called in, who visited, it has the rough drafts of comments he made. we understand that there were several videos made. they have the outtakes. so we want to see, it will give us insight to what the president thought he was doing during the 187 minutes when he failed to intervene. >> drump and son, donnie, jr., moved to quarterback subpoenas from the attorney general that was having a civil investigation in the trump organize's business dealings. how much of the action does that concern can you if the january 6th committee seeks testimony from him. we have seen how bannon and meadows have responded. >> i don't want to speculate about that. i know however, that the trump group is trying to delay action. >> would you be hesitating about the requested of subpoenaing a former president? >> we will do what ever we need to do to get the facts. we are, you know, mindful that we want to get it done and the good thing is, the entire committee rg, every member of the committee and every member of the staff has been pulling in the same direction just to get the facts. you don't have the same kind of fighting that you see on other congressional committees. so we don't want to get in protracted fights but we will do what we need to do to get all the information not only to lay it out for the 24 months to what steps we need to take, to prevent something like this from being attempted again. >> thank you. >> are you surprised that the committee said that ivanka trump could not get her father to make a statement? >> she announced in 2017 that she was not in the white house to change her father's mind. and that was something that people who hoped that that might be one of her roles, . if you look at her experience, she was not able to persuade suburban mirror, and never has been able to persuade her father to do anything. and ultimately, it illustrates -- police officers were being maimed and ultimately at least one of his supporters was killed trying to breech the house chamber door. i think he enjoyed this and i think his forces would prevail. >> do you think he wanted it to succeed? i mean, do -- >> oh, i do. i do. i have no doubt that he imagined that this was going to be the day when he would interrupt the process of congress certifying the election. and that mike pence would through either force seeing the force arrayed against him in the grounds a around the capitol or through a change of heart would take the action that he hoped he would take. now, where that would have led, no one knows. but he is a personal who's always wanted to press every case beyond the logical extreme, disrupt society as much as he could, as long as it meant he got what he wanted. >> are there any circumstances under which you could see ivanka trump cooperating with the january 6th committee and offering testimony? >> it's a difficult thing to imagine. i know she is sensitive to her own reputation and to her own image. but, she has gone all in with her father. you know, this is a family that is really mythical or shak shakesperean in its structure. it has the subsequent generation kp completely tied in knots. if he goes down in terms os of reputation, she will go down as with he will. >> jeff tubin said it was unthinkable that the judge would grant the motions to kwaush the new york state subpoenas, the trumps lose the motions if they co comply, will they face charges in new york state? >> yeah, these numbers have not changed on over the last year this. to me, is also the lunacy, in all this. it was legitimate, most voters were thinking it's 29%. it's still 71%. the vast majority of the people believe it was not legitimate. despite the fact that we know the victory was legitimate. i mean, this was a legitimate poll. >> there's no way 71% of republicans actually believed that biden did not really legitimately win. but this is a legitimate poll. plenty of others like it. >> what do the polls tell us of what to expect. in terms of reaction from future elections. what is interesting about biden and trump supporters, violence expects violence over losing. and 62% of those believe it. and this gets at what democracy is. >> are you proud of the things can and where they are going. 54% of americans are proud of the way democracy works. it is down significantly, it was 90% after 9/11, it's 54%. it's sad and unfortunate, and the numbers are the numbers. i report the numbers. >> the university of irvine, and he is the author of the up coming book, cheap speech. i mean, those are really depressing poll numbers. the fact that it shows rising acceptance of political violence. and proud of democracy is, you know, down from 90%. that is extraordinary. >> it is and it is a worrying sign. and what what did trump do in on office? he attacked the press, and the fbi and all the institutions that we rely on for trust to know that we have a functioning democracy. he attacked all of them. and when he convinced his supporters that the last election was stolen, and that there's an illegitimate person in the white house, what are you supposed to do? you have a revolution. you fight back against that. so, it's kind of a logical conclusion of the entire trump presidency and what he did in the period from november 3rd until january 6th. >> i read the piece in the atlantic. and we were quoted last month. it was titled trump's next coup has already begun. he said we face a serious risk that the democracy will come to an end in 2024, but urgent action is not happening. why do you believe that democracy as we know it can end in 2024, what can be done to prevent it? >> what the 2020 election showed us is that the president ally election process in particular is uniquely open to manipulation by people that don't act in good faith. there's steps between the time that people vote for president and the time that congress certifies the votes in january. what it took in 2020 was republicans and democrats acting in good faith. rejectingly calls by trump to put in an alternate slate of electors or find 187,000 votes. you can think of its as the practice run for 2024. and when people like brad rathensberger is being primaried by jody heiss who embraces trump's big lie, do you expect this guy, if he wins election will run the election fairly? and if he does, will democrats believe that he is going to run it fairly? so, this kind of delegitimization will work both a ways. >> what can change that? >> i think you need change in law and politics. there's a lot of things you need to do legally that makes this harder to happen. we can fix the arcane rules. even if they are changed, the law is only as powerful as those people to follow it. we need a political movement of democrats, republicans and independents, everyone embracing the rule of law and fair elections. we need to get organized for civic engagement so we are in a position to not allow an election to be stolen by anyone in 2024. >> you know, it's so depressing. i remember talked to tom freeman a while back. he was covering beirut before the civil war and he was saying how, politicians at the time in beirut were taking shots at the government and just making are ridiculous accusations and just taking shot after shot after shot, thinking you know what? once i do this, i will get in power and change things. but after a while, the institutions start to crumble. and the concern is that, that happens here. the president takes shots at the institutions of a democracy and everyone else does and then after a while, they crumble. >> sure, and you know, it works both ways. you know, if you believe an election is stolen and you are in a position of power, you may be more willing to steal the next election. if you try and do it, you will under mine people's confidence on the other side. it's a very vicious cycle and we need to get in to a better cycle where you know, we are supporting the institutions that help assure that we have fair elections. >> is there one thing that keeps you up at night when it comes to election security and integrity? >> well the problem is, it's, it doesn't follow good public health thinking and it does not follow a, the appropriate virology or medicine that is going on. bottom line is, little children can get covid and yes, they are much more like toll have mild symptoms but they can then spread it to older individuals and if we blind ourselves to certain individuals in our population assuming they will have mild disease, we are going to have multiple consequences. first of all, some percentage of those individuals will get severely ill. number two, they will continue to spread it to individuals who are more sensitive to severe disease and number three, you will have more possibility of forming another worse variant. we are already seeing indications of another variant right now in southern france that appears to have arisen from cameroon, and this is just a continuous problem when there's so much transmission. >> senator rubio said that people are testing positive who were admitted to the hospital for other cases. are you seeing that? >> let me just be clear. we are, we have almost as high a level of patients with covid in our hospitals as we did during the delta peak in august here. so, we are, we are almost at the same level as we were in august. now, yes, some of those individuals presented with noncovid symptoms initially. but that doesn't mean that can covid is not contributed to the reason they are in hospital. we are trying to tease out exactly who's who, and how we had to treat each individual. >> you are on the miami-dade public school medical task force. students and staff went back to school. masks required for all adults, remains optional for students. are you concerned about pediatric cases rising now that they are back in school after the holiday or do you think it's safe of?
