top of a brand new hour. it is good to be with you. i'm victor blackwell. >> and i'm alisyn camerota. the u.s. begins 2022 with a winter blizzard and a viral blizzard. more than 20 million americans are under weather alerts from the southeast to new england. this is the region's first major snowstorm of the season. in the meantime, the omicron variant has driven the average new infections to a record breaking 404,000 a day. >> hospitalizations are rising at a slower rate, but we are now learning that there are 100,000 people in the u.s. in hospitals with covid. this double hit has led to major disruptions, schools and businesses and travel. one major airport has ordered a ground stop because of the severe weather, and that is on top of the 17,000 plus flights that have been cancelled since christmas eve from staff sickouts because of covid. we begin the hour with cnn aviation correspondent pete muntean at reagan national. first, talk about this ground stop, and when potentially flights will resume. >> well, the good news here victor, is that we just learned that the ground stop for flights coming into reagan national airport just ended even though the main runway here at reagan national, 119 is still closed, and we don't anticipate an opening for at least some time. the lion's share of cancellations here are about 83%, all here at reagan national airport. it really tops the list according to flight aware of cancellations nationwide. second on the list, vwi, half of all flights there have been cancelled. look at the numbers overall. 2,900 cancellations just so far today. 16% of southwest scheduled. 14% of the schedule at sky west. that's a regional airline that operates flights for delta, american and united. 14% of jet blue's schedule. you know, airlines and airports are urgently trying to clear ramps, taxiways, and runways. they say that is a bit of good news as they come around the bend here. you know, the other good news is that airlines have been notified passengers according to airline experts ahead of time before they get to the airport that their flight has been cancelled. >> it's a tough situation right now. when it's weather especially, it's hard. that can happen last minute. with the covid cancellations, a lot of those are happening a day in advance, sometimes sooner but usually with enough time that you can try and figure things out before you're heading to the airport. >> reporter: overlapping issues here, victor and alisyn. not only the weather but covid c cancellations and staff shortages. about half of its cancellations were related to weather, the other half related to staffing shortages. we have seen a total of 18,000 cancellations since christmas eve. not really done just yet. >> oh, gosh, passengers are going to have to continue to be patient. pete muntean, thank you for all of that. now to major developments on the covid vaccine, the fda just approved the pfizer booster shot for ages 12 through 15. >> it also shortened the time for when a booster can be received. cnn's elizabeth cohen joins us now to walk through what the fda is doing and why. tell us about the new changes. >> reporter: so these new changes are really important for all of us. the fda now says don't wait six months after your second shot to get your booster. instead wait five months, and it's interesting, israel which has set the pace for the rest of the world for boosters. they no longer wait six months. let's see what the fda did for children, 12 to 15 for boosters. they said wait at least five months after the second shot, and children ages 12 to 15 can get boosters. that group got started getting shots back in may. about 5 million, 12 to 15-year-olds are eligible now to get a booster, and the fda cited real world data from israel showing that about 6,300 children that age got a booster and that it was very safe. they didn't see any safety concerns. victor, alisyn. >> elizabeth, is the cdc already considering new guidance on the isolation period? >> yes, they are, and you know what, i forgot to add something in the last answer that i want to add because it's so important. 39% of children between the ages of 12 and 15 have not gotten a single shot. boosters are important. the children who haven't gotten any shots, 39% of 12 to 15-year-olds, they need to get vaccinated as the omicron blizzard as you talked about before. the cdc came out with isolation guidance. dr. tony fauci telegraphed there would be a change to the guidance, needing to take a test to get out of isolation. let's take a look at what the cdc, what their guidelines are now. now they say five days of isolation, you have covid, but if you're asymptomatic, or your symptoms are resolving, isolate yourself for five days, and aft five days wear a mask and no test is necessary to end the isolation. it will be interesting to see if they require a test, also interesting to see if they come up with different rules for vaccinated versus unvaccinated people, and also they might come up with different rules for people who were essential workers versus those who were not. health care workers already have a completely different set of guidelines, and health care workers, i mean, hospitals actually can on their own say you know what, this is a crisis. we don't have enough people weaver getting rid of guidelines all together. it will be interesting to see if they move in that direction for other types of essential workers. victor, alisyn. >> elizabeth cohen, thank you so much. let's go to florida now, cases there have risen 948% over the last two weeks. cnn's layla santiago is in miami. 948%. what is the governor saying about this? >> well, victor, we just heard from the governor for the first time in several weeks holding a press conference with what you're saying, those record-breaking numbers. and he really focused on what he typi typically does, treatment, monoclonal antibody treatments, demanding more from the federal government. what he didn't spend too much time talking about was this, a what you see right behind me, these long lines and the demand for testing given those record breaking numbers. we are at one of the busiest sites in south florida and the wait here, workers will tell you is anywhere from 2 to 4 hours, depending on what time of day you come. just in miami-dade, they administered 52,000 tests and yet the governor is saying he has no plans at this point to pump more resources into testing sites like this. he believes the focus should be on prioritizing who is tested, saying let's talk about putting the elderly in testing before children, for example, and speaking of children, i know a lot of parents are right now thinking about that back-to-school given the end of the winter break for many. he stands by his stance which he says there should not be any mask mandates in schools, and he highlights a new law that was passed in november that bans that type of mandate in school. a new law that many school board members will tell you or have told me they feel is tying their hands essentially in protecting children against covid-19. victor, alisyn. >> layla eyla santiago, thank y much. the january 6th committee has testimony about what former president trump is doing as his supporters attack the capital. we have new details there. a poll finds 34% of americans think violent action against the government is sometimes justified. what that means as we hit the one-year anniversary of the insurrection. there's new rotisserie-style chicken, new peppercorn ranch, new hickory-smoked bacon, new- did you just spike the footlong? >> at this point, it hasn't specifically impacted the legislative session, alisyn, because the house is out this week. the senate was expected to vote today, but they postponed their activities because of the severe weather here in washington. but what we're talking about here is the on site testing that takes place every day in the capitol. there's free testing available to anyone who works at the capitol. that includes staff, members, even those of us in the press corps, and what they have noticed, the attending physician is saying prior to this week, the positivity rate was less than 1%, and then it jumped to more than 13%, and he largely blamed the omicron variant for the sharp rise in the number of positive cases. keep in mind, victor, and alisyn, there's hardly been anybody in the capitol for the past three weeks because of the holidays. there isn't expected to be a huge increase in the number of people until later in the week when they gather for events surrounding the one-year anniversary of january 6th, and then when they return to session next week. still, there's been a huge concern about the increase in these positive cases. one of the things the capitol physician is recommending is we all use these, these n95 masks as opposed to cloth masks when we're walking around the capitol at all times and when we're in contact with people because they are concerned about the spread of this variant. victor and alisyn. >> ryan nobles on capitol hill, thank you so much. let's bring in "washington post" white house reporter, and cnn political analyst, seung min kim, and charlie dent, former republican congressman. welcome to you both. the "post" has out this new remarkable polling that shows a headline here, a third of respondents say that violence against the government is sometimes justified. 23% of democrats agree with that. 40% of republicans. 41% of independents. el i mean, for those who are trying to keep the country divided, they are succeeding. how much has changed or hasn't changed over the years since the insurrection. >> these poll results are remarkable, coming honestly on the one-year anniversary of the january 6th insurrection, and i think what's been interesting about this poll in particular is that first of all, it's the largest percentage of people who felt this way, that violence is justified in years of polling on this question, which is what "the washington post" found, and i think the other -- i think the other really interesting part about this poll as well, is what you kind of alluded to, victor. there is, for the first time, there really is this sharp partisan divide. a noticeable partisan divide in people who do believe violence against the government is sometimes justified, with republicans being more likely than democrats to think that way, so again, these are really kind of frankly alarming results about the sentiments of the public, and obviously coming on the heels or coming just ahead of the anniversary of the insurrection is just really kind of underscores a really tense moment in our politics. especially as, you know, the leader of the republican party, the former president is continuing to spread these lies that fueled, you know, this riot on the capitol, almost a year ago. >> charlie, isn't there another way to look at those numbers, which is let's look at this scenario, let's say that president trump, again, runs in 2024, and this time, he, again, tries to steal the election, and this time his cronies in battleground states help him go along with it. then wouldn't democrats, maybe the number would go up for democrats if they felt that that's not democracy. obviously stealing an election, and installing a president who's more like an autocrat, then maybe they would feel that violence was justified. what do you see in these numbers between democrats and republicans and independents? >> well, as seung min mentioned, i think these are alarming numbers, 45% of republicans, 25% of democrats think that violence against the government is okay. we saw obviously what happened last year with the insurrection, the attack on congress, disrupt the peaceful transfer of power, horrible, despicable act against the government. summer of 2020, we saw attacks on law enforcement officers, police stations, that's an attack on local government in many respects. i think this is disturbing and to the extent in 2024, i always worry that the shoe can be on the other foot. if for some reason democrats lose and they feel that the election was stolen, might they resort to the same tactics. i hope not, but it's something we have to be concerned about because so many people don't believe that our democratic process is fair, and donald trump has been saying it's been rigged for a very long time, and sadly a lot of people now believe him. if the other side does the same thing, we can expect more problems going forward. >> congressman, another finding from this poll, 72% of republicans say that the former president bears some or no responsibility for the violence on january 6th. just as a reminder, i want you to hear what the minority leader, kevin mccarthy said in the days after the attack. >> the president bears responsibility for wednesday's attack on congress by mob rioters. he should have immediately denounced the mob when he saw what was unfolding. >> from your perspective, who's following whom here? did he shift because of public sentiment or are they all following, i guess, the leaders in congress who are just falling in line with president trump? >> well, i think kevin mccarthy had it right in that statement. there was no question that the former president bears a lot of responsibility for what happened that day. we all saw what happened. he was running his mouth for weeks after the election that it was stolen, and then he sicked a violent mob the day of. basically told them we're going to fight like hell and sick the mob on the capitol. yes, donald trump bears a lot of responsibility for what happened on january 6th, no ifs, ands or buts, and i think what's happened in the minds of many people, that event is behind us. they have moved on and many are trying to whitewash what happened that day or rewrite the narrative that it really wasn't quite as bad as it appeared, we shouldn't believe our eyes and ears. i think that's a big part of what's happened, time has intervened and many people feel it was not quite as a consequential event as it was at the time. and it was a consequential event. >> and by the way, i'm not talking about if people who lose in 2024 are sore losers like we're seeing currently and think that their guy should have won. i'm talking about if it's stolen, seung min, and that brings us, what will happen, what will fair minded, free people want to do if this time the election is successfully stolen in 2024. that brings us the to voting rights, and whether or not congress and president biden are actually going to focus on voting rights to ensure that it can't be stolen and that cronies can't throw an election for their guy, and so there's this new reporting that chuck schumer is planning to, i'll redo the letter he sent to colleagues in a dear colleague letter, the senate will debate and change senate rules on or before january 17th, to protect the foundation of our democracy, free and fair elections. >> what's so interesting about that letter from chuck schumer is he's really explicitly tying the january 6th insurrection to voting rights which has been such a big priority for the democrat democratic party, and you have seen shifts from president biden who said before the break that he's open to some sort of a filibuster carve out if that's what it takes to advance voting rights. now we expect any push to change the rules in the senate to allow voting rights bill to pass to fail because of opposition from two senate democrats, joe manchin, and kyrsten sinema. i think democrats really leaning into the voting rights issue as it relates to the insurrection and what fueled the insurrection is interesting. now these are federal changes, and what's really kind of note worthy about what's going on in the republican party is that a lot of changes, proposed changes that republicans are pushing are coming on the local level. for example, replacing members of county boards of canvassers that certify elections. you have a lot of trump allies running in key local races that deal with election results, and obviously that's not something that's going to get resolved at a federal level. it's something we should be watching closely. >> absolutely. seung mi min, charlie dent, tha you. >> join cnn for an unprecedented gathering of police, lawmakers, and leaders on the anniversary of the attack on the capitol, live from the capitol, january 6th, one year later airs thursday night, 8:00 p.m. eastern only on cnn. twitter has banned the personal account of republican congresswoman marjorie taylor greene for spreading covid misinformation but her congressional account is active. what republican leadership is saying about this, next. and earlier today, the fda approved a third vaccine dose for kids aged 12 to 15 in the u.s. but there are some people already getting their fourth or even fifth shots with no certainty about the safety or effectiveness of those extra doses. what that means, and where that's happening. , so i'm good. now move! kim, no! mucinex lasts 3x longer for 12 hours. superpowers from a spider bite? >> absolutely. we believe that it is vital that we revisit the mask mandates because this variant is so very infectious and it seems as though you can be in closer proximity, so yes, that would be a perfect case scenario, but one that i'm not sure we will be able to achieve here in the state of florida. >> i'm not sure you will either because it's a law now so obviously it takes a lot to unwind that, and also just today, governor ron desantis feels very strongly about in-person learning, and obviously he is on the record, not appreciating mask mandates at all for kids. here's what he said today about colleges and in-person learning. >> you're seeing some of these other universities around the country, some of them are even doing shelter in place over omicron for, what, a 20-year-old college student? i mean, it's absolutely insane what's going on. our universities are going to be open. our state universities, they're going to have in-person instruction, and i think any university that doesn't do that should have to refund 100% of the tuition to the parents. >> i think what he's calling shelter in place, he means isolation, which is if you test positive, i think that's what he means because we had a hard time searching for what exactly he was referring to, but the larger issue there is should in-person instruction be mandatory in florida colleges right now? >> i think that the bottom line is that the medical experts and the university administrators should be working together to come up with the best solution and in order to keep our students safe. we all agree that in-person learning is the best way for the children and young adults to learn. however, we are still in the middle of a pandemic, and it is evolving as we speak. and so now is the time. it's more important than ever for us to make sure that we listen to the science and to the medical experts and not trying to go rogue and make decisions based on opinions and economics, which it appears as though that might be where he's going with that statement. >> let's look at what's happening with hospitalizations in florida with children. so much like the country, it is going up as you can see in terms of coronavirus hospitalizations, not as badly as it was in september, but it's heading in the wrong directions. here it is for the u.s. it's going up dramatically for kids in hospitals. i just want to know, are you seeing kids being hospitalized for covid or with covid? when they get to the hospital for some other malady, is it turning out that they're positive for covid or are these actual covid hospitalizations. >> so far the evidence is pointing to a direction of it being -- children being admitted for other reasons, and that they incidentally test positive for covid, which is good, which is good news for us in the case of theatrics. however, the hospitalizations are going up because infection rates are skyrocketing, and so that's really what we're seeing so far. i actually just checked in with our county children's hospital, and that is exactly what we're seeing here in miami-dade county even though our infection rates are through the roof, and our hospitalizations are increasing, for the most part about 75% of those kids are being admitted for other reasons, and they incidentally test positive for covid. >> that's really good news. i was alarmed, though, when i heard the former fda commissioner scott gottlieb say that omicron, which appears right now to be more mild in adults might be more problematic, is the word he used in children because it's presenting an as upper respiratory virus, which is more dangerous, i think, for under 5-year-old kids. can you just explain that? >> well, we're not quite seeing that yet in the pediatric world. i think it's a little premature. upper respiratory tract infections can be a little bit more severe in younger children. however lower respiratory disease is always more of a problem, and so we're not seeing that yet, lower respiratory disease in omicron patients which, again, is a little bit of good news for us in terms of taking care of kids that are in the hospital. >> for sure. dr. lisa wynn, thank you, really appreciate you being here. >> my pleasure. epidemiologist michael osteoer home joins me now, the director for policy at the university of minnesota. good to have you. let me start with a broad question, and put up the map. this is the map we have looked at for now two years that shows the trend of cases. it's almost all red in states with 50% or more versus the previous week of case expansion. but when we look at what's happening in these states, full stadiums at bowl games, at nfl games, the mayor of new york says that they're staying open, schools are staying open. similar thing from colorado. is that map, that trend, less determinative or should it be of how we go about our lives? >> well, victor, if you look at the previous surges of covid that we've had, they tend to be regional, meaning that we saw the sun belt states, the midwest, the far northwest, the upper northeast, all at somewhat different times over the course of the last two years. was happening with this particular surge, it is a viral blizzard in all 50 states. basically it's happening roughly at the same time, maybe offset by two or three weeks. but the bottom line is the whole country is going to be in the suit. so anything going on anywhere right now like that can contribute to ongoing transmission. as you just heard in the last interview, this is a very highly infectious virus. it will find you if you are not protected from infection with vaccination or previous infection. >> but those who aren't vaccinated, if you look at what we know about the trend of cases, 400,000, the seven-day average per day now, and that doesn't even count the at-home positives, so when you look at the percentage of those cases that go to hospitals, it's probably lower than what we know. is every case now a crisis? is it as dramatic as it was six months ago? >> well, let's first of all clarify how many cases occurred in this country. bottom line is we don't know, and we won't know. why? because so many people today are not getting tested. it's difficult to get testing done, and so therefore, that right there cuts the number. in addition, state and local health departments are struggling just to get cases reported. i've talked to health departments in the last several days where they are weeks behind in reporting cases. a daily case count means low. what we need to focus on and what we're getting on in terms of seriousness, how many people are hospitalized, particularly are requirements for oxygen. that's going to be a lagging indicator, meaning seven to ten days offset from the cases themselves. it's going to be the best measure we have. right now, that's what people like myself are tracking is what's happening with hospitalizations, and as you see, we've now got over 100,000 hospitalizations here in the country. it's rising rapidly. that says this is a really important issue, and that while there may be many many more omicron cases of which many are mild, the sheer number of cases means even if a smaller percentage are severely ill, they're still going to be potentially more of them than we saw with delta, and that surely will challenge our health care systems. >> let me ask you about what's happening in israel, they're now offering a fourth vaccine shot to those 60 and older. they started with those in that age group who were immunocompromised. is that the next step? israel has often been ahead of the u.s. on its vaccine program. is that what's next for us? >> i don't think we can say that's what's next in the sense that we're all looking carefully at how to best use these vaccines. they're remarkable tools but they're not perfect. if we end up finding ourselves in a position where we need to basically boost someone every six to seven months, that's going to be a challenge. we can't do that for the world. i think you're going to see a lot of discussion over the course of the next month or two as to just how should these vaccines be used. we went from a two dose mrna vaccine dose to a three-dose. now some places are looking at four dose, particularly for those who are immune compromised, and i think that the final answer is not in yet, how often we're going to use the vaccines. >> there are a lot of final answers that aren't in yet. professor michael osteorholmes, thank you so much. finally kicked off twitter nor spreading dangerous nonsense, and republican kevin mccarthy is coming to her defense, sort of. ♪ feel stuck with credit card debt? >> well, alisyn and victor, first we have to acknowledge what's happening is on the price front. americans are dealing with some serious sticker shock here in the grocery store. check out some of these price gains. chicken prices up by more than 9% from a year earlier in november. pork up nearly 17%. that's the most since 1990. and bacon and breakfast sausage up almost 18%. that's the most on record. and these price spikes are driven by really strong demand, covid-related supply issues and then higher costs for energy and for labor. now the white house is arguing that a lack of competition in the meat industry is making matters worse. here's what president biden said a short while ago. >> the big companies are making massive profits. their profits go up, the prices you see at the grocery stores go up commensurate. the prices farmers receive for the products they are bringing to market go down. this reflects the market being distorted by lack of competition. i've said it before and i'll say it again. capitalism without competition isn't capitalism. it's exploitation. >> so what is the white house going to do about it? the president's action plan calls for investing $1 billion federal dollars in independent meat processors through grants and loans. this is all aimed at boosting competition. they also want to launch new regulations into combating abuses here. they are planning to roll out a product of usa labeling rules so that people have a better sense for where their meat is coming from and also launching a new way for farmers to report anti-competitive concerns to the justice department and the usda. the chamber of commerce is not happy here. they are calling the biden plan misguided and they're arguing the administration basically using these high prices as an excuse to launch an antitrust crackdown. pleat read you a key line from neil bradley, the chief policy receive at the chamber. he said that isn't economics. it's politics. and sadly, such government intervention would likely further constrain supply and push prices even higher. now most people want to know when they can actually see relief on prices. some experts do tell me that biden's plan could help eventually, but a senior white house official told me that this is not going to necessarily happen overnight. this official said this is something that can help in the medium term. alisyn and victor, all of this shows that the white house is trying to prove that it takes the high cost of living seriously, but there are no quick and easy fixes here. >> okay. matt egan, thank you. >> thanks, matt. wait, what?
