Pass didnt want to rebound. Its not for me to comment. I was not there. I grew up a fan of both those guys. I play the game of basketball because of those guys, both those individuals. I love them. Sometimes you need to get in a room and have a cigar and a drink, wine or something. Theyll be all right. They are at peace with themselves if they read your book. Thanks so much. Grazes on the book. Thank you. Welcome to our viewers in the United States and all around the world. It is thursday, november 25th. Im john berman. Brianna is off. Chief White House Correspondent Kaitlyn Collins here this thanksgiving morning. Happy thanksgiving to you. Happy thanksgiving. I hope everyone is pouring their cup of coffee and putting the turkey in the oven. There is new fallout during this consequential week for race in this country. A jury of 1 whites and one African American finding three men guilty of murdering Ahmaud Arbery as he jogged down the street. This weeks after racially charged remarks by in the courtroom. And the plaintiffs were awarded 25 million in damages. The White Supremacists used the trial to promote messages of hate. And Kyle Rittenhouse not guilty on all counts in the deaths of the two men during the unrest there last year over the Police Shooting of jacob make, a black man. Now emerging as a darling of the right as lawmakers are fighting to hire him as an intern on capitol hill. The case putting the debate over vigilanteism and landing rittenhouse with an audience of former President Trump at marla tkpoe. And men accused of rapeing a white woman is now exonerated. And strickland wants to spend the rest of his life looking at the ocean and hague sure this doesnt happen to anyone else. We will start with the guilty verdicts on the trial for the men now convicted of killing ahmaud robbery. Joey, i just want to reflect on this moment. What happened in georgia, the deep south, you had an almost all Height Jury Convict three white men for killing a black man. Its not something thats never happened before, but it was significant. It was an important moment. What made the deference . It was really incredible. Reflecting on it, i thought the fact that we were so nervous is it a reflection of where we are or does the verdict speak to where we have come. So those are the conflicts that i to through in my mind. How could you be is nervous in light of such overwhelming evidence. You can focus on a coup of things in this case. The issue as it relates to the first prosecutor really trying to otherwise protect these defendants, right. You remember shes under indictment herself for the fact that she intervened in an improper way. Then she gives it to another prosecutor. He writes a memorandum saying there is nothing to see here. Then we have 74 days, two and a half months go by and theyre not arrested. You could focus on that and focus on the fact that the system ultimately got it right. Their there things amis here. Dig down, peel back the onion and see whats going on here. They did that. Finally we thought there wouldnt be any justice as a collective. And here we are where we have a jury trial and theres so much thats there. And i think what made the difference to sum up in the heart of your question is its about facts and its about the law. And the verdict ex to the facts, john. It speaks to the law. When you have issues of im going to invoke a citizens arrest but there is no crime, how do you do that . Nothing happened but him going and looking at the construction site. When you look at the issue of selfdefense and you provoked the aing ta, you were the initial aggressor, the ones ultimately committing the felonies, i think the jury looked at it. The last thing i will say before stacy is look at the verdict, too. The verdict was not, okay, lets just go home. They had a nuanced verdict with respect to issues they found issues of guilt and not guilt. It is an overwhelming day and speaks to where we could if we focus on facts, issues and that is right and proper and just. Good thing. Stacy, the end of this trial made me reflect on the beginning of this case, which was 74 days before the arrest or charges were brought. 74 days. And it was because the video came to light that there were ever any charges. This is what i said made me reflect on the beginning. The video was more or less handed over by two of the defendants because they thought it helped them. And it made me just think about the prism in which they and society looks at this. Without question. They probably were quite proud of the video. They thought that it demonstrated everything that they needed in terms of their defense. That they were just, they were right. This reflects the prism of the problem in our country. They saw a Black Man Running, which was their 911 call. That was the emergency, Black Man Running. Why cant a Black Man Run through any neighborhood . So it does reflect still the racial divide within our country and within some people until each one of us can see our other that may look different than the other as themselves. That racial divide remains. That is the work of our nation. In this particular case, these three defendants im sure are baffled about how this cant be. They probably still see themselves and their actions as just. And thats terrifying. An appeal. All the Defense Teams have said they are they are fog to appeal. Any grounds for appeal . Yes. There will be tproupgrounds for appeal. The Defense Attorneys have tried to lay down certain bombs. The complaints about the jury pool. Thrp they are complaining there were not enough white men over 40 in the pool. But you ended up with a white jury with one black juror. And i think this does reflect social progress. As noted, trials are typically to decide if someone has committed a criminal wrong in our community. Sometimes they reflect social progress. And that happened here. Looking forward, there are still federal charges her. Thats right. What will that case tell us . I think it will tell a lot. First of all, its telling that there is even a federal case to win with, right . You can have simply a state case and it go away. But the federal government is saying were going to take a deeper five and do something a little different. That will be about the interference of Ahmaud Arberys rights predicated on him being African American. It will be about their actions as it relates to and how they were motivated about i that fact. We will hear evidence we didnt hear in this case with respect to text messages, allegedly, that were exchanged between the defendants that tonight put them in the best light with regard to a particular slur that was made by travis mcmichael, the son, at the particular crime scene. So its going to be a different type of dynamic with respect to what the federal government has to prove. Happy thanksgiving. Thanks so much for coming in. Take a day off, will you . The rest of the day. I had you guys coming in. Im not going to miss that. A Top Trump Organization is off the hook for now. They do not intend to bring charges as part of their ongoing criminal investigation into the business. Kara scanell joins us with more. Good morning, kaitlyn. They are at the telling calamari they will not bring changes against him. Thief had he been looking at calamari as part of a tax fraud scheme, whether he received off offthebooks compensation. It shows they are intensifying their focus at the or of what this investigation has been looking at all along. That is whether the Trump Organization inflated the prices of properties had they were seeing loans and lowering them when it came time to pay their taxes. Now we are in the home stretch here. There are five weeks left. Cy vance wanted to wrap et up before he left office. They had a Subpoena Fight that went to the Supreme Court twice. There is an ongoing fight Behind Closed Doors in a sealed proceeding that we dont know that much about. It all led to some delay. If he doesnt make a decision by the end of the year, this will go to his successor, alvin bragg. A longtime prosecutor who worked at the new York Attorneys Office and it will fall to him to mack the final decision. It is a big issue to put on alvin braggs plate. Thank you for that. Elliott, you heard kara saying the window is kind of closing when it comes to cy vance. Right. His time is coming to an end. Is this everything a critical phase . Look, to be candid, kaitlyn, it doesnt look like thief had he much of anything. A lot of exception cases and he would have been charged with getting unjust compensation and not paying taxes on it. Prosecutors usually dont charge by themselves unless they have tax crimes or something else. It seems like they dont have anything else. It looks like they are abandoning prosecuting him. It seems the investigation isnt going that well against everybody. Both Matthew Calamari and the Trump Organization. They are transitioning away from Matthew Calamari spread of the original part of the probe, which was looking to see whether they had overin plated the value of properties. Its a high bar, right, to prove they defrauded owe dental leaders . Not only a high bar to prove, but who is going to prove it . Weisselberg is not testifying. The Chief Operating Officer is not going to testify. To prove a case you have to get somebody to testify. I want to switch gears. Happy thanksgiving. Thank you for joining us. Happy thanksgiving. We are seeing a lot of people traveling. More and more people on planes acting completely unruly, out of hand. Obviously a lot of this is being prioritized by law enforcement. The Attorney General sent out a memo telling federal prosecutors, to prioritize these cases. So what do you read from that memo from the Attorney General . Look, Attorneys General do this all the time, put out memoranda to their states and say Work Together to prioritize hes kind of cases. This is going to be a tough travel season. There are federal crimes from assaulting flight staff to disrupting the flight or whatever. People can good to jail. Look, another thing Pay Attention to i have a hard time seeing, for whatever reason were not going to get into that today, but i have a hard time thinking this reaches that Political Drama because this is important. You dont want people disrupting flights when there are fewer flights happening in america. It is like just get on the plane. Everyone be nice, relax. Get on your mask. Go to sleep. Dont punch your flat attendant. It shouldnt rise to the Attorney Generals desk, but here we are. Happy thanksgiving. Jamie dimon made a joke. Why he is apologizing to chinas communist party. Retail sales are soaring. Americans have a pretty gloomy outlook on the economy. Joining us now is cnn economics commentator Catherine Pafplell and senior political analyst and Senior Editor at the atlantic, ron brown stein. Thank you both for joining us. If youre the white house and youre looking at these numbers, what are you walking away with this from . I think the white house has to be very careful. On the one hand, this is a pretty good economy. Good jobs numbers, unemployment numbers. Gdp is back where it was prepandemic. Stock market is doing well. There is a temptation to do a victory lap of course. If you look at Consumer Sentiment numbers, theyre quite low right now. Americans are worried about the loss of Living Standards because of inflation. The administration has to be careful of touting these numbers too much. They have to acknowledge americans and present a plan for getting to the other side. What a political challenge, ron. I cant think of a precedent here. But you have a jobs market. You have gdp. These numbers are good. Just really, really good. But you have a white house that doesnt seem to be gaining any Political Capital from it. Look, inflation, you know, eclipses the sun, right . It is something that people feel every day. Sometimes many times a day. The hope for the white house has to be if the economists are right and this is fund mentally temporary, driven in large part of how we spend our money from services to goods, that it reseeds next year at some point, stops blocking the sun, and all of these other Economic Indicators gain prominence in the way people are assessing the economy. Theres only so much they can do, as im sure catherine can tell us, in the near term. They will try the build back better. It has powerful measures to help people teal with child care, Prescription Drug costs, more money in the child tax credit. Fund mentally it is a waiting game to allow some of the fact rs to come to the fore. It could be a long wait game for this white house. They are hoping the numbers and Price Increases will recede by next year. People are celebrating thanksgiving today. Their turkey is costing about a dollar more. Gas is higher. As the holidays are happening, how do they deal and combat with the high prices and High Energy Prices . Its really tricky. As ron points out, the president in particular has limited tools to deal with inflation in general. The president gets a lot of blame for whatever happens with the economy, including with prices. But doesnt have that many levers he can pull. He is trying to show he is doing something. Thats why we saw this announcement about releasing barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum reserve earlier this week which i dont think will move prices all that much. He needs to show he is doing something to address the concerns. There were other tools he could deploy. You know, things like expediting the processing of work permits for illegal immigrants. Things they dont seem so willing to deal with now. Even those wouldnt have much of an effect. The administration is saying we understand your pain. We are doing something about it. They dont want to acknowledge the truth i think which is they cant really do that much. As ron says, it is kind of a waiting game. They are hoping it will pass. They are had he hoping the tradeoff will be worth it. If the economy runs hotter, we will have faster growth, hiring and inflation will pass and on the other side, it will pay off. The numbers they are put out, theyre right. A 20pound turkey, a big bird that feeds a lot of people will cost you one dollar more. The white house was trying to put it in perspective to say its not that much but they have to be careful because people do feel the pain. Theres no political issue quite like inflation in terms of how often people feel it during the course of their week and even their day. So,s you know, while inflation is high, its hard to imagine theyre going to get a lot of credit for these other things that are going on in the economy. To some extent, high inflation is the price that literally you pay for the level of growth that they have kind of seeded through the rescue plan and some of their other measures. But,s you know, john, there is a lot of precedent here for what we are seeing, which is a president comes in at a moment of economic turmoil, it doesnt turn around fast enough to prevent his party from having a bad midterm. As the economy stabilizes and Gains Momentum in the second half of his term, he recovers to win reelection. Thats pretty much the story of reagan from 82 to 84, clinton and obama. I think there is more reason for them to be confident that they could be getting this kind of tail wind in time for the second half of bidens presidency and this epic battle we are shaping up for in 2024. Something certainly the white house is counting on. Thank you both for joining us this morning. Happy thanksgiving. Happy thanksgiving. Yoyou ght t beurprpris new reporting from the Washington Post that cia director William Burns delivered a warning to russias top Intelligence Services that they will face consequences if they are had he behind the string of Mysterious Health incidents known as Havana Syndrome. Joining me now is john hudson, the reporter who broke the story. Tell us what they had to say to these intelligence agents. This is an extremely rare meeting. You dont have the cia director, meaning the fsb and sbr in moscow very often. What he said to them was a very clear warning that if they find out that the russians are behind these mysterious Havana Syndrome incidents have have been happening all over the world, debilitating brain injuries, unusual symptoms. If we find out that the russians were behind this, there are going to be consequences. This was not a sssigning of bla. They dont have all the facts together to assign blame for this. There is deep cures onity and suspicion at the cia in langley that the russians are behind this. You dont take a decision in a meeting like this lightly. You do not target u. S. Personnel. You do not target family members. Those are all people who have reported incidents of dizziness, nausea, traumatic brain injury, a whole variety of different symptoms related to this incident. You report that the cia director reported if russia is behind the attacks, is there frustration that they have not been able to say this in a more concrete way that, yes, it was russia behind these attacks . Its a huge source of frustration. And frustration varies agency to agency, Department To department. Kaitlyn, you know there is a long history of spy versus spy, tactics between the United States and russia. Very rarely does the United States just take attacks sitting down. This is the bizarre dynamic thats happening right now. As we said, there is not proof russia was involved with this. Many at the cia are convinced that it was the russians. So there is even an impetus in some pockets of the cia to come out and retaliate. Thats obviously premature before being able to assign blame. What is the next . To have the cia director show up and say there is going to be consequences if we find out it is you behind the a, ta. Do we know how they responded to this warning from the cia director . Its a great question. This is one that i posed to the cia. Its one that i posed to other contacts who are familiar with these exchanges. It is unclear how russia responded to this. Now, publicly they have said they had nothing to do with this. Denial has been sort of their first goto when it comes to this. So definitely tbd on the russian reaction to this warning. Denial seems to be an art form for them. John hudson, thank you so much for joining us with this very important reporting. Good to be with you. So new this morning, the white house last night, and im talking like 9 00, the evening before thanksgiving, the white house revealed President Biden had a polyp removed during his routine colonoscopy. Testing showed it is slow a slowgrowing lesion thought to be potentially precancerous but that no further action is required at this time. We want to bring in c. Dr. Chris purnell. Explain to me what this means. So, john, this is the power of prevention. The Preventive Services task force, beginning age 45, you should undergo screening. Colonoscopy is the Gold Standard for screening. He had a colonoscopy and there was a finding. That finding was a tubular adeno ma. Those older than 50 years are more likely to have polyps. It was benign. Because there is a potential for that to develop into something that is cancerous, the polyp was removed what does precancerous means. Im not sure people fully understand it. It just means theres a growth. There is a growth in the colon. And whether that is something that is flat or that growth is something thats on a stalk, the size of the growth, the most important and distinguishing feature, does it have dysplasia. The president s polyp did not have dysplasia. Because it could continue to transform into that, the doctors took it out. And you say the Gold Standard for Preventive Care ages 45 and over. Those are the exact words my doctor used when talking me into doing this. You know, youre of the age. Its important to do. Good job. The exact words that he used. I want to talk about where we are with covid. Cases are rising. It expects hospitalizations and deaths to go up in the coming weeks. Thats a change. Ed cdc before said they were uncertain of the future. Now they expect it to go up. I talked to dr. Fauci overnight. We are talking about what people should do this thanksgiving day. But i think it is instructive about how he thinks people need to live Going Forward also. Listen to what he said. Just be very careful. You can have an enjoyable, restful thanksgiving in a vaccinated setting. Do that. Dont just deprive yourself of that. But be careful, particularly when you travel. Those words dont deprive yourself of that is interesting. Its an interesting way to think about where we are in this pandemic for people vaccinated and boosted. Dont deprive yourself of life now. We know how you can live and do the things you can do as long as youre careful. Because, john, this is becoming our new normal. It is an often overused term. For those of us who are fully vaccinated, boosted, those of us wearing our masks still outdoors in public settings, we know we are lessening the risk of being exposed and contracting coronavirus. So, yes, we have to have a sense of zest, a zeal for life. Because we know that social isolation in and of itself is also a risk factor for worse outcomes. Do what makes good pandemic sense. Prevention and multilayer protection is good pandemic sense. Dr. Pernell, happy thanksgiving to you. Same to you and yours. Breaking overnight, not one but two new Smash And Grab robberies. This time at an apple store. And another nordstrom. Whats behind this disturbing new trend . And on this thanksgiving, a lesson in gratitude from alabama Coach Nick Saban. These guys arent getting paid to play here. They are representing you all. You should be proud and happy to support them and appreciate that they do and have some gratitude. Well discuss that of course coming up. But first, as the pandemic drags on, Food Pantries are continuing to see increased need from the communities they serve. Cnns Victor Blackwell has more on the challenges they face and the ways that you can help in this impact your world. Reporter when covid19 swept across the u. S. In 2020, the need for emergency Food Assistance exploded. And that led experts to label hunger as the secondary pandemic. Over the course of the last year, about 60 million americans sought help from the charitable food system in this country. We have never seen numbers like that before. Had although Feeding America says Food Bank Use is now down in their network, the need is still above prepandemic levels. We are not Out Of The Woods yet. According to Feeding America, more than 42 Million People, including 13 million children in the United States, are at risk of possible Food Insecurity this year. The tsa announced moments ago they screened 2. 3 million passengers yesterday representing 88 of prepandemic levels. So most of the way there. Lets check in with the mayor of washingtons Reagan National airport, cnns pete muntean is there. What do you see . Reporter it does feel like that sometimes, john. It is pretty incredible when you think about that number. That 2. 3 million number screened yesterday by the tsa is about double where we were this time last year. So this is an incredible rebound. And airlines are really facing their biggest tests yet. Look at the numbers so far. More than 2 Million People a day since this time last week. The tsa anticipated a total of about 20 Million People would take to the skies, a huge figure. A lot of concern that the airlines wouldnt be able to handle the big onslaught of folks because they got smaller during the pandemic. Just check flight aware. 45 cancellations today. Things seem to be moving pretty smoothly. Listen, we are so thankful for you and the work that you do. Thanks so much, pete. Reporter thanks, john. Alabama football Coach Nick Saban went off in a prethanksgiving speech directed at Alabama Fans Who dont appear to be thankful for what they, really we, have. Listen. When i came here, everybody was happy to win a game. Now were not happy to win a game anymore. Were not happy to win a game at all. We think we should win games by whatever. And i dont think thats fair to the players either. Because our players work their butt off to be the best that they can be. To get criticized for what they work hard for to do so that you can be entertained. All right. So you can enjoy and have pride and passion for what they accomplish and what they do. And theyre not perfect. Theyre just college students. They to to school every day. Theyve got to study. All right. They have to run after practice had they meigs study hall. Come on. Give me a break. This is not professional football. These guys arent getting paid to play here. Theyre representing you all. You should be proud and happy to support them and appreciate what they do and have some gratitude. And you know what else, nobody wants to win worse than they do. Not me, not you. I dont care what kind of fan you are. Nobody wants to win more than the players that play. Nobody. That was magnificently said. And and nobody feels worse than they do when they lose. Yeah. Nobody. So for all you selfabsorbed folks out there that cant look past your own self, all right, to appreciate what other people are doing. John, you know it is going to be a good speech when he starts to say the back to back all rights and he starts to really get into it. Its funny. Everyone will laugh. This video is obviously going viral and being very widely spread around. But i to think he had a point. Sometimes and of course everything im saying here is completely biased because i am part of the alabama fan base. I did go to the university of alabama. I am from alabama. But i think he has a really good point, which is you get so caught up in the success that you have seen alabama have since nick you have all these amazing seasons where we pull off these amazing wins and i do think it is true, people take it for granted and you have a one loss, like we do so far this season, and people think, oh, the whole season is gone now. Whole thing has changed. Who knows what will happen when it comes to the playoffs. And the national championship. You forget those are real people, on the field, and they are students and they work really hard to play as well as they do every single saturday. I think it was something that needed to be said. You could tell as he was going that he was speaking his mind and he said his piece, right. Then he paused and thought for a moment, and said, i really do mean this, this is really serious. I want people to Pay Attention to what im saying. If we could take a step back, i dont think he was just talking about football. I dont want to diminish the crimson tide, i dont want to diminish the Alabama Football Team and the commitment to them, but he was saying something bigger than that, if there is something bigger than alabama football, which is to say, you know, be grateful for what you have. Dont always be saying, why cant i have more . What you should be saying is were lucky to have this. Yeah, and i think thats when youre saying the bigger picture, it has to do with success. How hard people work to be successful, and it is something that i think people once they see that trajectory, they take it for granted and take the behind the scenes work that these coaches and these players and every staffer who is involved in the Alabama Program really puts in here. Yes, that does translate to a broader thing. I think a lot of the things that saban says at times translate to more than just what is happening on saturdays, and one thing he was saying there, it is not even just about alabama, because people do start to discount other teams. We played texas a m, which alabama lost two, people went into that week, not really worried about the game, thinking alabama had it handily, going to secure a win there, and what saban was saying is, youre underestimating your opponent because they are coming into this and they have had two losses and theyre hungry and they really want to win. And everyone, this is very true and saban says this a lot, is they bring their best game to alabama. They all want to beat alabama. They all are preparing for that, that is the game of the season for them. And so you have to think of how the alabama players have to deal with that, which is that people are bringing their agame every time they play them. And i did love, though, you saw there at the end of that, my friend eli gold, who is the voice of alabama football, he thought saban was done there and saban made clear he wanted to keep going a little bit further. And i just think that saban, you know, maybe they like how they get their message, i do, im biased in favor of him, i think he had a good point, hes right. Two quick things.
