He is trying to turn this race into a referendum on bidens stall the agenda here at home while mcauliffe has spent a lot of time trying to tie youngkin to former President Trump. He encouraged speculation that donald trump could be rep re rein reinstated. We dont need a lap dog for donald trump. And tonight word that donald trump may be about to drop a bomb on this race, announcing that trump plans to participate in a tele rally just hours before virginia voters go to the polls. Its unclear if youngkin will participate in that telerally saying if hed like to be governor of virginia, he will. Up to this point, youngkin has kept trump at arms length, rarely mentioning him on the trail. If trump stumps for youngkin on monday, will he use the final four hours to help the republican in what has become a very close race, or will trump continue to make false claims about the last election that he lost, including doubling down on this ridiculous assertion that his 10point loss to Biden In Virginia as as a result of Election Fraud. I didnt campaign there because i was told you cant win there, but i was very close in virginia. Probably because ive heard bad things about their voting, very, Very Bad Things. It was largely mailin and ive heard a lot of bad things about virginia. I would say i would win virginia easily. Trump lost and he lost big. A top Election Official in virginia told me just last night there was no evidence of these, quote, Very Bad Things that trump claims. I want to be perfectly clear, that there was no fraud in 2020. There is a lot on the line in virginias gubernatorial race, and that is why both campaigns are pulling out all the stops in the final push. Democrats are always concerned, but there are fears that this race has been nationalized so much that could hurt them because of how they feel about the biden administration. That is really what you heard from Kamala Harris tonight. Its about virginia, yes, about the things a governor could do for virginia, but its also about the National Mood and what voters choose to do here will say a lot about what they feel going into 2022, 2024, and she even said beyond. Why that matters is there is a lot going on here that both campaigns are testing out. Democrats and republicans dont know, really, what its like to run in a posttrump era, and that has been something that democrats have been worried about. They saw huge turnout during the trump era and Terry Mcauliffe told me during the primary he was worried about what would happen during the general election. Would democrats come out in generous numbers . There are concerns that isnt necessarily going to happen and thats why you see Terry Mcauliffe trying to tie repeatedly to donald trump, saying hes donald trump in khakis to a host of other things, trying to go to trump and get involved in this race, believing it would turn out democrats. Obviously polls have been pretty steady over the last three months. Theres been some variation, some move toward youngkin over the laesst few weeks, and that concerns democrats as well. But i will say this is the first year that virginia has allowed no excuse early voting. About a million voters have already cast ballots. That really kind of negates these last few swings because so many votes have already been banked, poppy. Now lets get to eva kim covering the youngkin campaign. Are they worried that trump could come in at the last minute and do some harm to the push . Reporter no indication that trump will come in and cause problems. It doesnt seem the campaign is that concerned about it. Youngkin doesnt mention trump on the campaign rally, and his supporters honestly dont seem all that concerned about it, either. They understand the extent to which he sort of gives a wink and a nod to trumpism, talking about election integrity. They understand that. But they also understand the game. They know youngkin is trying to capture moderates, capture trump voters, also try to peel away some democrats, and they know that effort involves keemg trump at arms length. His supporters seem to be just fine with his strategy. Take a listen to youngkin earlier today on the trail talking about how its he and he alone on the ballot. On the ballot is virginia against Terry Mcauliffe, and its amazing whats happening right now, because, boy, these polls are really showing this momentum. Polls dont win elections, votes do. But whats happening right now is you can see Virginia Just Racing by Terry Mcauliffe. Virginia is racing by him. He pretty much stayed where hes been all along, 49, 50, Something Like that. Its also true, as dan pointed out, democrats have a main advantage they havent had in past elections. The ability for hundreds of thousands, over a million, actually, for voters to vote early and they probably have a substantial democratic edge to them. On the whole, i would say democrats are very, very worried, and they should be worried. They didnt expect the campaign to end up like this, but it has. So, john, youre talking about a state where Biden Beat Trump by about 10 point last year, not that long ago. Youngkin tries to link trump every single time he can. He is bought and paid for by President Trump. He is a trump alkali. Why are we dealing with trump this year . 10 out of 11 elections for governor have gone to the candidate from the Opposition Party to the president who has just been elected, so 10 out of 11. And in 2011, he narrowly missed it. You have a guy who has tried to walk the line without Offending Trump supporters. Thats why he doesnt want to talk about donald trump but he wants to benefit from his base talking about critical race theory, quote, unquote, refusing to say in september whether he would have certified the election had he been in congress. You know, its a line and thats why this is one of the reasons its such a Big Bellweather election, because theyre testing a 2022 posttrump strategy in virginia. You have to understand the overall dynamic historically in virginia has actually been what swings the governorship to the opposite party from what the president was just elected from. Larry, youve got a democratic candidate very critical of some of his own democrats the last few weeks for not getting this Infrastructure Bill over the finish line. What happened last night . Another delay. What does that mean for mcauliffe . It sure doesnt help him. Hes been very, very unhappy with Congressional Democrats and hes said joe bidens ratings are low in virginia and hes certainly right there. I would say that while the congressional democratic inaction is not determinative, thats not going to be the single factor that eitherie le elects him or defeats him, more than the latter. Its also true they could have helped once they passed the Infrastructure Bill. I think he expected that, and i believe he was led to believe that that was going to happen, perhaps by Speaker Pelosi and other leaders on capitol hill, and it didnt. And its fallen flat and thats another factor thats hurting mcauliffe. Youve got youngkin walking this very fine line between not Offending Trump, and more importantly, his supporters, and also not straying too far. Listen to this. He is towing that line, and i wonder if that coupled with kinzinger is telling you, in many respects, trump is winning this battle for the party. Theres been a lot of debate, not just in the medical community but on social media about whether youre really protected if you have recovered from covid and whether you need the vaccine at all. And this study published by cdc today in mmwr really looks at two ways of obtaining immunity. Natural immunity acquired after an infection compared with the vaccineinduced immunity. And what they found is that you were much more likely to be hospitalized with covid if you had recovered from a Covid Infection and had Natural Immunity than if you had received a vaccine. And the reasons for this probably have to do with the level of the immunity you get from the vaccine. We know that naturally induced immunity can be relatively variable.
