baldwin's hands ended up fatally shooting the cinematographer and wound being the director. this is what the founder >> we learned today and reported exclusively that the gun that alec baldwin used to tragically, accidentally shoot haylna hutchins had been used earlier in the day with target practice. there's a lot of down time on sets. you probably know this. there is this pastime that crew members flin -- plinking. they shoot at beer cans. this is live ammunitions. this is the day that haylna hutchins was killed. >> we have new information about dave hols, the assistant director. he was fired in 2019 after a crew member was injured in another gun safety incident. production of "rust" is on hold indefinitely and possibly it'll never see the light of day. chloe is with us now. some of the pieces are coming together, even as there are so many questions to be answered. >> to hear the report about these crew members out doing target practice, plinking as we talk about it. when we talk to rust productions, they point us to a statement saying safety has been their top priority and concern. they're doing an investigation into this. they still don't know the details as to what caused haylna's death. was it a projectile, a live round of ammunition? i want to listen to an interview with meg james. a prop master turned down an opportunity to work on this movie. take a listen. >> when he was talking to the production manager to try to iron out the logistics of his assignment, he felt like the producers were a little evasive. he thought that they were trying to do too much with too small of a budget. and the one thing that really bothered him was that when he asked for two aassistants, one o be in charge of the guns, another to help him with the props, they said, no, they wanted that to be filled with one person. the gun person would have to also help out with props. he found that that was a red flag. >> yeah. also, as you said, filming on this movie has halted completely. obviously, there is an internal investigation. there is also an investigation by the sheriff's office. will this movie see the light of day? it doesn't look likely. >> i have to say, if that gun, if it turns out the gun wasn't used for target practice, it increases the legal liability for a whole number of people, not to mention the people who shot the gun, the people who were supposed to oversee the gun, how it got off the set to begin with. a whole lot of questions there. there are also questions about the assistant director. what more can you tell us about that? >> dave hols, he worked on "freedom's path" in 2019. julia jones got some explosive reporting. the production company said he was fired because a gun accidentally misfired. it didn't physically injury someone, but one of the crew members, he had some hearing loss and some hearing issues because of that. he was terminated that day. now, dave hols did not respond to cnn's request for comment, neither did rust production. dave w dave was someone who shouldn't have been out there on productions. >> thank you very much. keep us posted. >> i will. this morning, we're getting show and tell from a hollywood expert on how gunfire is supposed to be simulated on a movie or tv set, how to do it safely. no one getting hurt, obviously, except the fictional bad guys. here is cnn's gary tuckman. >> two, one. [ gunshots ]. >> reporter: larry is a renown motion picture armer, a safety specialist in the entertainment industry. >> we have the white cups. this is going to make a lot of noise, but there will be no residue or cups knocked out because it is not a live bullet. >> it is a blank cartridge. >> okay. >> countdown, three, two, one. >> no residue. no cups. created the illusion you want in hollywood without a bullet coming out. >> correct. >> reporter: we're at a independent studio services prop house north of los angeles. props that include north america's largest private armory. safety in the industry starts with a lock box for weapons. >> the gun we're going to use is inside here. this is the single action revolver. you can see that, at the moment, it's empty. >> reporter: you turn it so we're sure it is empty? >> this particular one has six cylinders. i'll always click it over seven times, just to make sure we didn't miss anything and that you're comfortable with the fact that it is, in fact, an empty firearm. >> reporter: i'm comfortable. this is what a blank looks like. >> cartridge case. there is no projectile. >> no bullet or projectile. >> reporter: it has gun powder. >> it has a primer in it. this is a modern theatrical blank. >> reporter: what looks like a typical bullet is sometimes used, for example, to show a tight shot of a gun being loaded in a movie or tv show. under safety regulations, such a bullet -- >> it's a dumby cartridge. it can't go bang. there is a projectile on the end of it. >> reporter: bullet. >> there is a bb. i can rattle it next to your ear. >> reporter: no gun powder. >> can't go bang. >> reporter: there are other precautions. >> we have the single action revolver. i measured out 20 feet, the minimum safety distance on a film set. we have a target there. i'm going to load up the blank into the gun and announce the gun is hot. hot gun on set. >> reporter: it's a hot gun when something is in the gun, in the chambers that will go bang. >> correct. if the gun goes bang, it is a hot gun. if it is empty and can't go bang, it is a cold gun. three, two, one. [ gunshot ] i'm going to unload the gun now. presumably they've yelled cut. i make, as the armer, the announcement, "cold weapon on set. cold weapon on set." >> reporter: i ask, what if someone walks in front of a person firing a gun with a blank. could you be seriously hurt? >> as you'll see, there is smoke and flame coming out. you know, you might feel the effect of it a little bit. but there is no projectile. >> reporter: okay. good to know. >> counting down. three, two, one. [ gunshot ] >> reporter: gary tuckman, cnn, los angeles. >> based on all the experts we hear from in gary's piece and the ones we talk to, it never should have happened. never. there were multiple layers of security in place that should have been there to prevent that gun from ever being able to go off and kill somebody. >> there should be no bullets on set. also, there's a difference between a prop dgun and a gun that accepts bullets, right? there should be prop guns that don't even accept bullets into the chamber. >> what a tragedy. >> yeah. it is the biggest crisis in facebook's 17-year history. tens of thousands of pages of damning revelations leaked by whistleblower frances haugen, showing how facebook profits off false information and relies on an algorithm that pushes fake news. among the revelations that cnn unk uncovered so far, facebook misled the public about extremism linked to the 2020 election and insurrection, allowed the algorithm to promote q qanon conspiracy theories. did little to stop violence in places like ethiopia. hasn't fixed things on the site leading to human trafficking. also it may have misled its board. >> i've seen research that says the engagement-based ranking shows divisive, extreme listen ko -- content. anger and hate is the easiest way to grow on facebook. >> now, facebook ceo mark zuckerberg is striking a defensive tone. he is blaming the media during his company's quarterly earnings call on monday. >> criticism helps us get better, but my view is that what we are seeing is a coordinated effort to selectively use leaked documents to paint a false picture of our company. the reality is that we have an open culture, where we encourage discussion and research about our work so we can make progress on many complex issues that are not specific to just us. >> antonio sullivan is with us now. it reminds me, in a way, of spoiled food, right? like a worm in the food. it's someone saying, oh, but they're focused on the worm, not the food. well, the food is spoiled. >> i think he is taking a page out of the trump playbook there, right? >> yes. >> i think that is becoming the facebook strategy. go after the media now. shoot the messenger. last week, we saw a facebook spokesperson gave a response to the "washington post" about a legit story. it was an on the record statement from a facebook spokesperson. over the weekend, nick clegg warned the staff saying, we're going to see more, as he called them, bad headlines, and suggested this was because the media was jealous, essentially, of facebook's success. so they're no longer engaging on these issues when we're going through their own documents and research. they're, instead, attacking the media. >> coming from internal documents and testimony from people who worked at the company, including frances haugen. what else has she been saying, donie? >> yesterday, haugen pinpointed a very good point. facebook is available in 100 languages, more than that. centrally in 100 languages around the world. facebook does not have support staff, content moderators, who can look for hate speech and harassment, especially in countries like india, ethiopia, e there are conflicts and various issues. they're dropping the ball, and facebook's researchers are pointing that out to them. listen to what haugen had to say in london yesterday. >> good actors, good publishers are publishing all the content they can do, but bad actors have an incentive to play the algorithm. they figure out all the ways to optimize facebook. so the current system is biased toward bad actors and biased toward people who pushed people to the extreme. >> i think a really important point that haugen also made here is we'll often see numbers from facebook saying they catch 90%, 99% of this speech and that, and say they're all on top of everything. but she made the point to say, some people, their feeds, depending who you follow, depending where facebook brings you, it is covered in misinformation. they show that with a research project internally. they set up an account belonging to a north carolina mom. she liked trump's page, fox news. within three weeks, she was recommended qanon, but also the three percenter militia. the militia that took part in the insurrection. you wonder how radicalization, extremism is happening in this country? there is a 41-year-old mom in north carolina being recommended this after three weeks on facebook? it's not hard to see where the problem is. >> they end up with a feed entirely of that kind of information. now, they are in a siloed stream of information, cut off from other influences. that's just what happens to the brain. that's just what happens to the mind. so what is congress going to do about it? >> that's -- you know, when we go in the field and speak to trump supporters and folks who don't believe the election was legitimate, and believe qanon and all these other things, people say, i wonder, how does that happen? well, take a look at their facebook feed. they live in a totally different universe than the other half of the country who have it based in reality. a lot of that is down to facebook and these platforms. what is congress going to do about it? really good question. they're all making noise, but are they going to make regulation? that is going to be one of the great questions, i guess, of our time. today, youtube, tiktok, and snapchat are in front of the senate answering questions about their harms on children, what protections they have in place for kids. >> right now, it is noise. they're making noise. we'll see if they take action. >> that's right. >> donie, thank you for the report. it's so important. president biden refuses to block another batch of documents related to the capitol insurrection that donald trump is trying to keep private. the latest on this escalating showdown ahead. plus, democratic leaders racing to strike a compromise on the president's domestic agenda. the critical sticking points that remain, and the white house delaying the release of jfk's assassination records, citing national security concerns. what? what's going on here? >> yeah, good morning, guys. thanks. well, look, there is the possibility there's some information within these files that still needs protected. that was statutory language. so i'll give you one example. lee harvey oswald, the expected assassin, went to mexico city in september of 1963. we know he visited the soviet and the cuban embassies. we might have had, probably did, sources in those embassies, both human and technical, and protecting those sources, especially human, they could still be alive 58 years later. they could be in their 80s right now. but what is really at stake here is getting the white house and the agencies to identify, specifically, what the harm is, so that people understand and have trust in their government. >> and i have heard it told that there are people, i don't know if you're among that, that think it's the cia specifically that's slow walking this. >> there's no doubt. absolutely. most of these records are cia records. even though they have cited covid, which is completely understandable, all the freedom of information act lawsuits have been litigating for the last two and a half years and have been stymied by covid. we all get that. but these records have been processed for the last 25 years. the agencies have been supposedly going through these that entire time. so to just now all of a sudden say, well, covid required this extension is a little disin disingenuous. >> so there's not much the trump administration and biden administration agree on, but trump delayed the release of some of this stuff also. now biden is. so why does it seem to be happening with presidents of both parties who disagree on everything else? >> because it's intelligence methods. i mean, it really does emanate from the agencies. the cia in particular, as we've said, has pushed this and pushed this. look, a lot of the information actually doesn't depend or relate to what actually happened november 22nd. so there's no smoking gun in these documents. but there's a lot of information surrounding the event. cia activities in kcuba, castro the years before, and any other type of information that may relate to organized crime. who knows? it is all about getting the fuller picture so that we have a better understanding of everything. and what we really want is the -- this administration, as everyone before it, to comply with the statute. this was a congressional statute passed in 1992. in many ways, congress dropped the ball too because they haven't done much oversight on it. >> are we ever going to see this? >> eventually, we will. look, this order that president biden issued on friday actually has some good things in it too. now, we have to wait another year, and that's not good. but he's requiring that the national archives digitize all the records, a quarter million records. most of the records are publicly available, but you have to go to the national archives in college park, maryland, to see it. so hopefully, sometime within the next couple years, these records will be online so anyone around the world can access them and do their own research. >> i've gone deep into different rabbit hole on the conspiracies surrounding this, people have truly wacky ideas. i know you have contact with all kinds of people also. i want to ask one last time, you don't think in the end there will be any mind-blowing, smoking guns here? >> no, no, i don't. look, those records are long gone if they ever existed. every piece of information is helpful to have a better understanding. a lot of times, it's getting those documents out so people can see there is no consp conspiconsp conspiratorial aspect to it to better understand it. transparency, the best disinfectant. it's the best opportunity for people to understand and learn to trust the u.s. government again. that even relates to events that happened 58 years ago. >> we all deserve to know. mark zaid, thank you. i appreciate it. >> thank you. damning allegations against facebook and now ceo mark zuckerberg is firing back with a conspiracy theory of his own to explain all the bad press. plus, new comments from lightning rod comedian dave chappelle, who is now saying he won't bend to anybody's demands. the new sensodyne repair and protect with deep repair has the science to show that the toothpaste goes deep inside the exposed dentin to help repair sensitive teeth. my patients are able to have that quality of life back. i recommend sensodyne repair and protect with deep repair. when you're driving a lincoln, stress seems to evaporate into thin air. which leaves us to wonder, where does it go?
