they are officially space tourists after being on board blue origin with jeff bezos and his flight company. the rocket portion of the spacecraft touching down softly in a scene me science fiction than fact. the remarkable reality? it's a commercial flight to outer space. shatner overcome with emotion and deeply moved by that experience. >> it was like you go through the blue, and then you're into black. it's galloaxys but what you sees black. down there is light and it's the difference. to have this, you have done something -- whatever those other guys are doing, they're not getting it. what you have given me is the most profound experience. i'm so filled with emotion about what just happened. i just -- it's extraordinary. extraordinary. i hope i never recover from this, i hope i can maintain what i feel now. i don't want to lose it. it's so -- so much larger than life. it has nothing to do with the little green men, it has to do with the enormity and the quickness and the suddenness of life and death. 50 miles and you're in depth. >> this is life. >> this is life and that's death. in an instant you evolve. that's death. that's amazing. >> truly amazing. kristen joins us now from west texas. kristin, what are shatner and the rest of the crew doing right now? >> reporter: ana, they are celebrating a successful flight to space and preparing for their post-flight press conference. but i tell you what, it's going to be tough for william shatner to top the monologue he just delivered from the desert floor shortly after landing. that was pure poetry. you know, 2021 is the year that space tourism really takes off, and william shatner has just become the poster child for what space tourism can do, how it can change a person. truly, if you just express the power of space tourism. this is william shatner, somebody who has had arguably one of the most interesting lives that any human can have, saying he just had the most profound experience of his life. he said it's something that he wishes every person on the planet could experience. so i want to ask him about that at this press conference. i also want to talk to audrey powers who was on the mission. she is blue origin's vice president of mission and flight operations. think about what she just experienced. she spent eight years pouring her heart and soul into this rocket. she now got to fly on it for the first time, and not only that, but it was her team, her people who packed those parachutes and sent her up into space. so i want to talk to her about that. and then there's glen exaand ch. those were two paying blue origin's customers, and i know it isn't right to ask, but i still want to know how much they paid for this trip to space, and was it worth it? so far blue origin hasn't said, but i want to push a little bit and see if they'll answer that question. i think it's safe to say william shatner experienced that overview effect that many astronauts talk about today. >> kristin fisher, i look forward to hearing the answers you get to your questions at the upcoming press conference. i want to bring on a member of the first orbital flight entirely by tourists. chris zymbroski was part of that profound experience. you've been back almost a month. do you feel like your feet have touched the ground yet? >> hi, ana. i'm still trying to figure out what this new sense of normalcy is. i know exactly what william shatner is talking about. once you get in the atmosphere, and you look back, no matter what you dreamed about as a kid, what it's like to be in the planets and in space, once you're up there you're thinking about, why are we still so close to earth and why aren't we going farther? for me it was looking back at earth and thinking this is such a beautiful and sacred place, and it was really, for me, a moment of, oh, my gosh, this is an incredible planet. i'm seeing such wonderful and amazing places. just like you said, you're being introduced to this amazing experience, and now you can see all these wonderful things below you that you have always been a part of and now you want to go and be a part of them even more and travel and connect with them more directly. >> it sounds like it changed you're life perspective. we know william shatner is 90 years young. it's hard to believe given the amount of energy, and exuberanc he was showing there, but he is now the oldest person to travel in space. i'm curious what it does to someone physically. what kind of toll did space flight take on your body? what was the impact? >> one of the great things about going on this flight is proving that you don't have to be that perfect speciman and get eliminated medically to be a part of the small corps of astronauts. for me personally, i did experience space motion sickness being up there for a little while. nobody threw up on our flight, in case anybody was wondering, thanks to our medical officer on board, but it's a little bit disorienting at first, but you experience those g-forces that are really pushing in on your chest, you feel the vibration of liftoff, the excitement of reentry, and those are things that i'll always take with me and keep remembering. overall, you keep your balance for the most part unless you're up there for a long time. we were able to come out walking and dancing once we got back on top of the ship. >> we keep covering these launches that continue back to back to back. nasa has it, though, that this commercial space tourism is mutually beneficial. how do you see it? >> i agree. i think -- i mean, shatner said it himself that everyone should experience this. i think what is so great about space travel is that we can go into space and do some incredible science and research and develop our presence out there while simultaneously solving problems here on earth. we don't have to sit back and just spend all of our money and energy and resources on all the problems we've had here for mil mi millennias, because if we forge across the continents, dive into microtechnology and develop computers and cell phones, if we didn't have those people to push the boundaries of what we knew and understand more of what science can tell us, we wouldn't have those amazing technologies that have helped better all of humanity and improved the lives of all of us. going into space has the potential to do that for us now. it's such an incredible opportunity that we really should all have the opportunity to go out and experience and benefit from it. >> right now it's just the richest of the rich. it's my understanding you got yours as a gift, essentially, your trip to space, but we know it could run into the millions of dollars for that 10-minute flight in this case. thank you so much, chris s sembroski. it was a pleasure speaking to you. >> thank you. meanwhile back on earth, president biden is about to face the crisis that is jacking up prices and hurting the already struggling economy. phil matting tingly is at the house. president biden is meeting with top executives at places like target. what's going on? >> he's trying to serve as the middle man to try to address what is one of the more vexing and complicated issues for the administration, for frankly pretty much everyone in the world to figure out as the world and global economy has tried to move past and beyond the pandemic. it depends what folks are buying, how they're buying it and has created major issues up and down the supply chain, issues that have very tangible effects on individual americans, whether they're trying to buy clothes or food. this has created not only delays but an increase in prices, the numbers we've seen continue to run hot in the latest report today. what the white house is putting together here is a combination of private businesses, port directors particularly in the los angeles area, in the port of long beach and the port of los angeles, to try to expand capacity. also including in that private companies, folks like walmart, ups, fedex, home depot target to give commitments. essentially everyone coming together to try to agree and expand on the work they're doing, and one of the primary issues here, why they're bringing in one of the top officials in the port of los angeles and port of long beach, you can look on the shore of southern california that have ships there for days, sometimes longer, who can't unload their containers because there is such a stockpile, such a holdup. those ports have been operating 24/7 in a pilot program. those companies will either move 24/7 or also expand night hours. the effort isn't going to flip a switch and change everything, but they're trying to show progress as white house officials know is a very real problem for everyday americans every single day. >> got to get those goods moving. thank you, phil mattingly, appreciate that. these supply chain interruptions are going to get worse before they get better. that is the warning from moody's analytics. i want to bring in their chief economist, mark zandy. is this plan expressed by president biden today, is that enough to solve this crisis? >> it's certainly a step in the right direction. it's a good sign that america is focused on this and get all parties involved so solve these issues. there are a lot of parties involved all over the planet. it's a logistical nightmare by definition. having them engaged, getting everyone talking and moving in the right direction, i think, is a step in the right direction. it's a complicated problem. pandemic is still on, and pandemic is still plaguing the rest of the globe. this isn't going to be easy, it's going to take some time. good step in the right direction. >> this is a main problem given the awareness of this issue has been around for some time. you say it's complicated. explain that. why is this still such a problem? >> i guess the delta variant did a lot of havoc here in the u.s., but it really careened the rest of the world, particularly asia and particularly southeast asia. that's where the supply chain begins. this is an example. a bunch of malaysian semiconductor plants had to shut down because a lot of people got sick, literally sick, and those chips are key to producing vehicles all across the planet. vehicle manufacturers have been unable to produce. truckers. there was a shortage of truckers even before the pandemic for lots of different reasons, and of course the pandemic has just complicated all of that. the pandemic itself has just really made things a jumbled mess. i'll also throw into the mix demand. we've all been stuck at home more or less, and we've been buying stuff, all kinds of stuff, everything from appliances, computer equipment, furniture, clothing, toys, you name it, we've been buying it. the demand is as strong as it's been by order of magnitude. you got all this stuff coming through the pipe and the pipe is being disrupted by the pandemic, and that results in this jumbled mess. then it's an intricate set of relationships, you know, from the factory to the truck to the port to the container ship to the port to the truck to the warehouse. there's a lot of stuff going on. >> you explained how it's all interconnected. inflation is also another issue. this morning we learned the inflation rate of the last 12 months is 5.4% now. that's the highest rate since the summer. people are feeling it. the cost of gas is up 42% in the last year. used cars 24%. the cost of food is up, clothes. are these prices eventually going to dip or just stabilize at some point and when? >> i think they'll still moderate. it goes back to those issues we were just talking about, the shortages of products, and when you have shortages then you have higher prices. as the pandemic winds down, and i think it will. each new wave of the virus will be less disruptive than the previous one, we'll work through these things and we'll start to see some price moderation. same as the job market. the other thing that's been scrambled is the job market. we have all these open positions out there but we haven't been able to fill them because people have gotten sick, they're taking care of sick people, they're fearful of getting sick, they're fearful of getting their kids sick, so they stay home and rates start to rise and prices start to rise, and that will iron itself out as well. it's not next month, probably not next -- not christmastime, maybe not even early next year. but i think by this time next year, the prices will begin to moderate again. >> we have to be patient, which is so hard. mark zandy, i appreciate it. thank you for being with us. a major step toward a return to normal for the first time. in 18 months the united states will reopen its land borders with canada and mexico to non-essential travel. but there are conditions attached. plus the laundrie family defending their fugitive son after a coroner confirms gabby petito was strangled. details just ahead. and the nfl won't release hundreds of thousands of e-mails tied to its investigation that forced jon gruden to resign as raiders head coach. we'll talk to a former whistleblower who says the legal still has a long way to go. wealth plan across your full financial picture. a plan with tax-smart investing strategies designed to help you keep more of what you earn. this is the planning effect. tackling tough messes can take more time than you have, but mr. clean clean freak delivers the power of a deep clean in minutes unlike bleach sprays, clean freak starts deep cleaning on contact with three times the cleaning power to break down tough messes in seconds it quickly cleans your home's toughest messes so, for a deep clean in minutes, get mr. clean clean freak available in easy to switch refills and now get the cleaning power of mr. clean in a wipe to kill 99.9% of bacteria and viruses. you founded your kayak company because you love the ocean- not spreadsheets. you need to hire. i need indeed. indeed you do. indeed instant match instantly delivers quality candidates matching your job description. visit indeed.com/hire - [female narrator] five billion people lack access to safe surgery. thousands of children are suffering and dying from treatable causes. for 40 years, mercy ships has deployed floating hospitals to provide the free surgeries these children need. join us. together, we can give children the hope and healing they never thought possible. it's a mission powered by love, made possible by you. give today. >> tech: when you get a chip in your windshield... trust safelite. this couple was headed to the farmers market... when they got a chip. they drove to safelite for a same-day repair. and with their insurance, it was no cost to them. >> woman: really? >> i think it's showing that we are learning to live with covid-19, which is something that we can do. we have vaccines for this reason. we know that they help to keep us safe and they also help us to return our economy and schools and everything else back. i do want to applaud the biden administration for mandating vaccines in this case. i think that sends a strong message about the importance of vaccinations, and i really hope that the administration considers the same type of vaccine requirement for domestic air travel as well. >> and yet there are governors, republican states that are really pushing back hard and trying to thwart those mandate plans. governors in florida and texas banning local jurisdictions, even private companies, from issuing vaccine mandates of their own. governor desantis just hit his stat county in his state a $3.5 million fine for making mandates. >> there are some businesses who want to respect entrepreneurship and there are businesses who want to keep their employees safe. why aren't these governors doing the exact same things they ordinarily are proponents of? i think it's hypocritical and flies in the face of government. >> they're also pushing back on governor abbott's vaccine mandm ban and they're pushing back against that. let me ask you about this new report which also goes to show why vaccines are just so crucial. this is from the "new york times" today. it finds that covid-19 was the most common cause of duty-related deaths in 2020 and 2021 for police officers. more than four times as many officers died from covid than gunfire in that period, according to the "times." despite this you have police units still fighting the mandates and fear that if mandates are put in place there will be a shortage of officers which they cannot afford. how do you address that? >> police officers, like the fire department and others, are supposed to be here to protect the health and well-being of the public. i do think having these incentives continues to be very important. but this is also the time we need requirements. we know these vaccine mandates work, especially because there is a large segment of the population who are in this unvaccinated but willing category, as in they may not have chosen to get vaccinated themselves, but if vaccination becomes the easiest and convenient choice, they end up deciding that. i think it is time for places all across the country, whether they're private businesses or local jurisdictions, to really emphasize the importance of vaccination through requirements. >> let's talk about kids and covid. the american academy of pediatrics today said the number of new cases in kids remains exceptionally high with more than 148,000 cases reported in the first week of october. but there is another article in the "new york times" that caught my eye which argues, quote, an unvaccinated child is at less risk of serious covid illness than a vaccinated seven-year-old. bottom line, what is the risk to children who are not vaccinated? what do we know? >> well, what we know is that this remains a very dangerous time for children during this pandemic because of the high rate of covid-19 that's all around us. i want us to think about the protection for kids as layers of protection the same way we think about layers you wear in the winter. if it's very cold outside, you need many layers. fl if there is a lot of virus circulating around us, we need a lot of layers as well. this is the reason why having mask requirements in schools and having everybody around the child who is able to be vaccinated to get vaccinated. that's all very important to protect the unvaccinated child. >> dr. leana wen, thank you for being here. i appreciate all that you do. brian laundrie's parents defending their fugitive son after the coroner's report reveals gabby was strangled. details, next. ♪girl, i don't know, i don't know,♪ ♪i don't know why i can't get♪ applebee's. now that's eatin' good in the neighborhood. some things are good to know. like where to find the cheapest gas in town, and which supermarket gives you the most bang for your buck. something else that's good to know? >> well, i do believe that they have known for a period of time the cause of death was strangulation. they already knew it was a homicide. but sometimes i think it's just a matter of timing. i don't know why yesterday the medical examiner chose to make that public. but, you know, there was a lot of demand to know what the cause of death was. but i'm certain law enforcement knew at least a few days before that strangulation was the cause of death. >> we've seen that video from back in august when petito and brian laundrie were pulled over by police in utah after someone called to report a man hitting a woman. i want to play a portion of what petito told police. >> i didn't hit you. be honest. >> he didn't like hit me in the face, he hit me -- >> did he slap your face or what? >> well, i mean, you know -- first of all, i'm not surprised that death by strangulation was probably the cause of death. it's not all that unusual in a domestic case. you know, and it's also not unusual that the victim would actually try to take on some of the blame. part of that video also shows that she says she hit him and he hit her. she's trying to take on some of the blame. she certainly was not responsible for any of that. he's the only person responsible for that. you know, clearly this is a situation where they were having arguments, they were having very heated arguments. it turned physical. now all of a sudden, you know, she's dead, body found in a wooded area, and he comes back by himself. now, he is, in my mind, a suspect even though he's not being technically called that yet. but it appears that he's the last person to have actually been with her or seen her alive. now, they're trying to build a circumstantial case here because that's what you have. unless he confesses, it's going to be circumstantial evidence. they're probably a step or two away from actually naming him as a suspect. but they have to find him first. they know enough now to pick him up just by using that credit card. but i don't believe they have any idea of where he is right now. >> his family attorney -- the family attorney did release a statement in response to the autopsy results, and they confirmed that he used gabby petito's credit card or debt card, i should say. i have to wrap up the segment here, but they did say brian laundrie is currently charged with the unauthorized use of a debit card belonging to gabby. brian is only a person of interest in gabby petito's demise. that's where we are on the story right now. charles ramsey, always appreciate having you here. thank you for being with us. the fbi under fire for refusing to reveal more information connected to the vulgar e-mails that cost the ex-raiders coach jon gruden his $100 million job. next i'll speak with a whistleblower who shined a loot on another team. her message to roger goodell, nextxt. so every touch w will protect le the first. pampers alberto and i don't fit into those other family plans. that's why we love visible. they do things differently. yeah, it's wireless with unlimited data and if you join a group it's as low as $25/mo. all powered by verizon. 5g included. woo! just get together and save! we look goooood! what's everyone's handle? what happened to you? >> of course. i actually just posted a photo yesterday on my instagram to show people that a photo was taken of me by my immediate boss, the cmo of the company, because he liked the way i looked that day without my permission. i was in a t-shirt. i was about to go running outside the facilities. that was something that happened on a daily basis. and you can translate that into understanding now that there are topless photos that were being exchanged between top-level executives and the nfl. that was just one day, one incident. every day you walked down the hallway and you weren't sure which member of the executive team was going to comment on the way that you looked, what you were wearing, what you should be wearing, how you should be addressing clients to impress them. it was a daily struggle. >> that sounds horrible. >> it was horrible, degrading. it has affected all of our personal lives, our professional lives, of course. there is really not a day that goes by that all of us don't think about what happened to each and every one of us. >> what is your message right now to nfl commissioner roger goodell? >> my message is to release the report. allow what we have been going through to become public. what people don't really understand is the work that we have to do outside of this story being in the media, they don't understand the therapy that we go through. they don't understand what it means for us when we're just having casual conversations with people. you have the power as the nfl commissioner to make serious change. you could be the commissioner that continues to step away from issues that the nfl is facing, or you can be the commissioner that says, i care about women. 47% of viewers of the nfl are women. and you have the opportunity to make a change or we are all going to be a safe and inclusive environment whether we work for the nfl or we're just at a game watching the nfl. >> emily applegate, i appreciate your time. thank you for sharing your story with us. >> thank you guys so much. new cases of the mysterious havana syndrome reported at the u.s. embassy in columbia now just ahead of a visit this month by the secretary of state. butg my dream anymore. i made a financial plan to live it every day. ♪ ♪ find a northwestern mutual advisor at nm.com in 2016, i was working at the amazon warehouse when my brother passed away. and a couple of years later, my mother passed away. after taking care of them, i knew that i really wanted to become a nurse. amazon helped me with training and tuition. today, i'm a medical assistant and i'm studying to become a registered nurse. in filipino: you'll always be in my heart. this is the new world of work. each day looks different than the last. but whatever work becomes... the servicenow platform will make it just, flow. whether it's finding ways to help you serve your customers, orchestrating a safe return to the office... wait. an office?
