the supreme court reinstates the abortion ban. what happens now? thank you for waking up with us bright and early this saturday, october 9. a pleasure to have you. welcome, laura to newday. >> i love mornings. a lot of fun. lots to get to. >> first chaos in congress. including a fight over subpoenas and executive privilege. >> that's right. former trump employee, bannon saying certain documents are protected. the current president does not agree. >> if all of that wasn't enough, drama over the debt ceiling. senate minority leader mitch mcconnell warning president biden he will not cooperate on raising the debt limit when the issue comes up again in december. >> we'll go live to capitol hill. good morning. focusing on mcconnell. he's agreed to the temporary deal to keep the country from defaulting but he tells the president don't help on his help again. >> no surprise. good morning, happy to see you on a saturday morning, laura. no surprise. mcconnell had already warned earlier this year, he would not help democrats in the first place. a lot of tension after the first week so that democrats would have to address this in early december. happening not just with the debt ceiling. the government funding. raising of the debt ceiling. things congress is punting to december. they'll have to address this. going back to what is happening with this letter sent. this is what he said. he said, senator schumer marched the nation to the doorstep of disa disaster. embarrassingly, it got to the point where senators on both sides were pleading for leadership to fill the lloyd. i stepped up. he has said he's not going to help them again. now democrats will have to figure out how to go at this alone. the majority leader schumer wanted this to be bipartisan but the nation defaulting on its debt would be a disaster for the economy and the world. democrats recognize that. it will be really busy as they figure out how to deal with this. the massive tax and spending bill and government funding. a lot of deadlines. it will be really busy here. >> this letter seems more obsessed with chuck schumer than addressing the debt. let's get some perspective now from cnn political commentator and anchor for spectrum news. good morning, earl. always good to see you. i want to get your take on the fight over subpoenas and executive privilege. the former president donald trump trying to block documents and potentially testimony from the committee giving cover to allies like steve bannon who refuse to comply. it strikes me that bannon hasn't worked in the white house since 2017. president trump is no longer the executive. in your mind, is this a delay tactic? does this have any actual merit? >> thank you for pointing this out. donald trump has as much right to evoke executive privilege as you or i. this belongs to our office and not just the individual. this shows more than anything that donald trump has a holt not only over the republican party but over his past aids and anybody who wants to sort of act at the national level on the side of the right. they do what he tells them to do. at legal peril and whatever cost without thought to logic and common sense. that information being sought will be had by congress. the legal exposure that steve is wrecklessly opening himself to is not going to work. they are not going to hide this information forever. simply because donald trump told them to is not only radical, wreckless and futile. we are going to find out what happened that day. there were too many witnesses, too many cameras that happen to be members of congress. we'll get to the bottom of it. this delay in tactic shows how much of a hold donald trump has over not just the party and over his former staffers. >> i try to claim executive privilege all the time and nobody listens. let's go now to the former senator. finally coming to the table on the debt ceiling. some of his former senators have been critical. ted cruz, lindsey graham openly questioning. do you see his power as waning? >> no. this speaks to what politics has deinvolved to. they were threatening to crash the economy, plunge this country into a depression almost without a doubt and for purely partisan reasons that have nothing to do with getting the budget under control. even if there were some kind of rational behind this. we are talking about approving money already spent. already allocated by republican-led majorities. they ran up the bill. to now act as if it is an acceptable partisan maneuver to default on it. it would have implications that goes far beyond the congress, beyond this decade. it would be a radical measure to urge them to do this because he didn't crash the economy or wreck the credibility of the united states. it shows us what kind of moment we are at. it is over why didn't you do the best thing that you could to make life miserable for democrats and, by the way, if it destroys the economy or credibility of the government, that's what radicals are attempting to do. they attempted not to go along with it at this time. it is a remarkable concept to have at all. the debt ceiling for years under donald trump. we'll have to leave the conversation there. always appreciate your time. >> thank you. we pivot now to some promising signs in the fight of covid. hospitalizations and daily cases are down but experts warn this battle is far from over. >> plus odd behavior. that's how police describe actions of brian laundrie's parents after he disappeared. to close, twist until it clicks. tide pods child-guard packaging. people, with quickbooks live someone else will do your books for you. they'll even pair you with an expert bookkeeper like me, who knows your business. knows... your... business! expert bookkeepers who understand your business. intuit quickbooks live bookkeeping. we strip in the community garden. i've been stripping here for years. i strip before take-off. breathe right strips open your nose for relief you can feel right away, helping you take in air more easily, wherever you are. i'll shoot you an estimate as soon as i get back to the office. hey, i can help you do that right now. high thryv! thryv?
