Threatening to hang Mike Pence as lawmakers and tHe Vice President ran to safety. Capitol police outnumbered and targeted. Now tHe scene quite different. Barriers and fencing around tHe capitol and hundreds of officers in position should demonstrations grow violent. We have a team of correspondents covering every angle of this. Lets begin with shimon Prokupecz And Security on tHe ground. Reporter fred, i wanted to come inside tHe Rally Area and show you whats going on Here. THese are tHe people gatHered. I would say tHeres more media Here at this point than some of tHe Rally Goers and tHen i want to show you otHer situations. Whats going on, a lot of people are gatHering, going towards cameras and spouting whatever it is that tHeyre saying. THen you have tHe security. Thats tHe big thing Here, right, tHe security. THe police behind us Here, something may be going on, i see police moving. Whats happening is some of tHe protesters, Rally Goers are out Here, and tHere are counter protesters Here as well. Thats causing some of tHe problems. But i have to tell you, most of this is peaceful. I just spoke to tHe Police Chief about this. Heres what He said. So far pretty much what we expected. We have people that gatHered to express First Amendment Rights Here behind us at tHe capitol. We have some people who oppose tHe group that gatHered, tHeyre peacefully expressing tHeir first amendment right. Thats what we expect. We facilitate peaceful, first Amendment Assembly. To tHe Extent Anything else happens through tHe day, we are prepared for that. We trained for this, worked closely with our partners. We have solid intelligence and were expecting a peaceful first Amendment Assembly today. Reporter i came out Here to show you whats going on. THe police Here are trying to separate some of tHe counter protesters from tHe Rally Goers. Heres someone, black lives matter supporter. I cant tell. But tHe police are trying to move him out of tHe way to try to prevent any trouble. Thats what tHe police have been doing. A lot of bike officers, thats what tHeyre Here to do. THeyre Here to break up some of tHe counter protesters and issues with otHer folks. Were seeing that unfold Here. OtHer than this, i have to tell you, it is mostly peaceful. Police have Dump Trucks Here to Help keep some crowd back. I want to show you again, tHeyre trying to move this guy out so tHeres no problems. This is like one of tHe first of tHese type of scenes since we have been out Here. Let you listen a little, too. So tHeyre moving him out. Looks like things will be okay. As you can see, this is what tHe police are doing. THeyre surrounding him and trying to get him out of Here. Thats tHe scene. Hopefully doesnt escalate much more Here. Thats sort of tHe first Incident Weve seen wHere tHe police had to go in and try and stop something from happening. Right. Sometimes it is an issue of permanent versus nonpermitted, also sometimes in anticipation to try to keep tHe peace, make sure Heres-nothing'>THeres Nothing that escalates from one to tHe next. As you continue to report, youll have to followup with that for us a bit later. Pete muntean is in anotHer area of He-mall'>THe Mall. What are you seeing tHere . Reporter not a whole lot of tension Here, fredricka. Saw a scuffle in tHe distance earlier. Bottom line is this has not been tHe event that Rally Organizers had initially hyped. THe permit being at union square, for 700 to attend, tHey said 500 registered to be Here online. Look at tHe crowd. Most of it is primarily members of tHe media. I would estimate maybe 100 people Here, Rally Goers. A very small and thin crowd. Still trickling in. Dont want to write it off just yet, but you can see this is as close as somebody can get to tHe capitol. This is all of tHe Bike Fence in front of tHe pond in front of tHe capitol. This is close as you can get, flanked by Member Members of Capitol Police department. Capitol Police Chief says tHe biggest risk for violence is by counter protesters and He says tHere were three counter protests planned. One has a history of violence although tHeyre not too not too much happening in tHe way of that yet. Seen a couple of counter protests Here and tHere, a Couple Counter protesters individually. But nothing yet, mostly quiet, not a lot of tension. Thats good. But youre in tHe space generally wHen tHere are permitted protests, thats about wHere it is. Very seldom are tHey in proximity of tHe steps or closer to tHe capitol than we saw. It is not a permitted demonstration, January 6th, but wHere you are now is typical space for organized demonstrations or gatHerings tHere on He-mall'>THe Mall. Keep us posted on how things unfold. Go aHead. Reporter it is important to point out, fredricka, congress was in session January 6th and it is september 18th, it is a saturday. Members of congress are not Here. Lawmakers were Here tHen, it is mostly Law Enforcement now. All right. Thanks so much, pete, for tHe distinction. Lets talk about Capitol Police and all tHeyve been under and tasked with and what tHeyve endured since January 6th and beyond. Tell us about what tHeyre up against and what is being discussed. THey endured a lot, fred, internally, externally. It has been a horrible year for tHem. THere is new reporting, new documents about tHe internal investigations into possible wrongdoing by some of tHe Capitol Police officers on January 6th. I want to be clear, Hundreds Of Cops responded bravely, valiantly that day. We are not trying to smear tHe entire police force, but u. S. Capitol police announced a few days ago tHey finisHed tHeir investigations into 40, about 40 police officers, and tHey decided to discipline six of tHem after determining that some of tHe officers did things unbecoming of an officer, things like taking selfies with rioters instead of repelling tHem from tHe building. One of tHe higHer up officers that was disciplined told people under his command not to put on riot gear, which one of tHe officers that spoke to internal investigators said tHey believe may have led to tHe hospitalization of one of tHe members of that persons team. Fred, it is a bunch of internal strife. Six officers are being disciplined. But today is not about tHe officers as pete and shimon showed you. Today is a protest about rioters, in support of tHe rioters. Let me breakdown wHere things stand in tHe riot investigation. Believe it or not, more than 600 people have been charged so far. It is a massive probe. THey made arrests in 44 states and d. C. Of tHe 600, only a few dozen are in jail, right . And Todays Protest and demonstration is supposedly in support of rioters that are in jail. Keep in mind, it is a few dozen out of 600. Why are those people in jail . Most of tHem charged with violent crimes, things like assaulting police, taking an Aluminum Bat to a police officer, things like that. And judges Heard tHe evidence, weigHed in after Hearing from tHe defense and tHe Biden Justice Department and decided in a few instances, few dozen rioters that are in jail, judges decided tHeyre too dangerous to release. Dont want to run tHe risk of tHem coming back to d. C. And participating in anotHer violent event. Marshall coHen, thank you so much for that update and to tHe gentlemen on He-mall'>THe Mall. Lets talk more with Law Enforcement analyst charles ramsey, also former Police Chief commissioner for Metropolitan Police in d. C. Always good to see you. Good to see you. Given what were seeing in live images of preparedness and turnout, how are you assessing Preparedness And Response right now . Well, tHeres definitely no question tHe Capitol Police, Metropolitan Police are prepared. I mean, i Cant Think of anything else tHey could do in order to be prepared. THe Intelligence Information is being shared. THey have sufficient resources in terms of personnel, tHey put up fencing. THeyve got tHe trucks lining first street. THeres not much more tHey can do to make sure tHere isnt a repeat of January 6th. It is customary for Metropolitan Police, park police, Capitol Police, national guard, all of tHem to work in concert, particularly in tHe nations capitol, wHetHer it is about demonstrations, wHetHer it is joyful gatHerings or otHerwise. Do you suspect this is a much more tense concert of resources especially given it comes just nine months after January 6th. THeres no question about that, January 6th was unprecedented in a lot of ways. I never could have imagined that we would have a Group Storm and Breach Security at tHe u. S. Capitol. I could not imagine that. Im still angry about it, as a matter of fact. Obviously tHeyre going to make sure that never happens again, and i can guarantee you nobody is getting in that building today, thats for sure. It is a result of what happened January 6th. THeres no question about that. And it is a shame that we have to mobilize like that, but it is just tHe reality of tHe world were in right now, tHe reality of tHe politics and Hate And Division that exists in our country today. Yeah. I mean, you talk about you feeling angry and still feeling anger. Lets be blunt. THe nation experienced trauma from what happened January 6th and those who were on Capitol Hill experienced trauma of unbelievable proportions so i wonder, i know you still interact with a lot of Metropolitan Police and Capitol Police personnel. What are some of tHem feeling right now who have not only still had a difficult time getting over what tHey experienced January 6th but now might be out tHere today on He-mall'>THe Mall in anticipation of tHe gatHering, a gatHering of people who are pledging support for tHe insurrectionists. You know, thats one of tHe things you have to learn to contend with in policing. You may be called upon to do something very similar to what you did before and you still havent gotten over that incident, wHetHer it is a member of tHe department, friend of yours shot and killed in tHe line of duty and you have to go on duty tHe next Day Or Experience something like tHey did on January 6th. Im sure it brings back unpleasant memories for many of tHem, but tHeyre dedicated, took an oath, and tHeyll be tHere and do a job and do it professionally. Were praying that today will be peaceful and well see nothing like a repeat of January 6th or anything close to it. Fred, just very quickly, thats true and that will happen today, that doesnt mean tHe issue goes away. September 18 is not going to stop whats going on in this country now. Just not going to end today, unfortunately. THe divisiveness and threats to this Country And Democracy are real and big. Charles ramsey, thank you so much. Good to see you. Appreciate you. Thank you. Officials say right now over 14,000 migrants are packed under a Del Rio international bridge. Right tHere, you see tHe images of all of tHem Held for processing by immigration agents. THe situation so dire, customs and Border Protection is temporarily shutting tHe port of entry. THe Del Rio mayor issuing a local emergency disaster declaration. Rosa flores in Del Rio for us. What is tHe situation, how are people being bussed, processed, are tHey being fed . What is happening . Reporter dhs announcing a strategy in response to tHe humanitarian crisis happening beyond this border wall. More than 14,000 migrants have been waiting to be processed by u. S. Immigration authorities. THeyre waiting in squal or, a lot of tHem sleeping in tHe dirt. In tHe next 72 hours, tHeyre ramping up tHe flights to haiti to try to move some of tHe migrants back to tHeir country of origin. THey closed tHe bridge. Here in Del Rio, tHeyre Rerouting Traffic to Eagle Pass to make sure tHey secure this area. THeyre trying to talk to haiti and otHer countries that are eitHer tHe Source Or Transit company. I talked to one haitian that says tHey have been in chile for awhile. After that flew to mexico, tHen came Here to tHe united states. THe biden administration is trying to talk to some of tHe transit countries to see if tHeyll take tHese haitian migrants back. THe otHer thing thats happening is that i. C. E. And tHe u. S. Coast guard are also getting involved, trying to move migrants to otHer Processing Facilities along tHe border. THere are many otHer Processing Facilities along tHe border. Some of those ramped up recently in tHe rio grande valley, Here in Del Rio dont have a lot of capabilities. One of tHe otHer things, fred, dhs is doing, tHeyre trying to ramp up tHe humanitarian aid. We reported earlier what tHeyre doing is tHe federal government is providing water, towels, toilets. THeyre trying to do more. This is a public Health-concern'>Health Concern wHen you have more than 14,000 people practically living under a bridge. Extraordinary number. Lets talk about this with my next guest, a correspondent in texas for tHe washington post. Good to see you. You have been covering tHe situation at tHe border for some time. How did this in fold . It is actually hard to tell. This wasnt a car van, this is ti different groups of people that decided to travel north, recently arrived in Central America or some otHer point and came by bus. Just happened to converge across tHe river from Here. And came in at tHe same time. It has been steadily building. Del rio is one of tHe places thats a preferred Crossing Spot for people coming from South America generally and through whatever networks, tHey happened to come Here at tHe same time. Have you been able to tell or find out among tHe 14,000 in this particular surge of people, based on what you just explained, has it been tHeir expectation tHey would get entry . What were tHeir expectations what would happen wHen tHey all converged like this . Reporter yeah, tHey have been in touch with families, Here in tHe united states, otHer haitians making it through tHese points in months earlier. In talking to some haitian migrants, tHe expectation was tHey would surrender to Border Patrol, be placed in a process, given a court date, tHen could be on tHeir way, which has been happening quite a bit. A number of families that get expelled has been dropping precipitously for months. Except now it is reported that tHe u. S. Is trying to work on upwards of 8 flights a day to haiti, and that haiti has reportedly accepted three flights bir day. How is that news sitting with tHe many hundreds and now thousands hoping to be processed for entry, tHey now might be put on a plane. Thats going to be discouraging news, to get Here to this point and realize that you have to wait under a bridge and sleeping on tHe ground without security of Food Or Water was an initial disappointment, but to learn tHey might be placed on deportation flights, i dont know if it will cause panic or to reevaluate, tHese are people planning tHese trips for a long time and survived countless otHer in dignities and dangers. Walking through jungles in panama. Maybe well see people moving to mexico and otHer points to get to what it is tHey want. What about otHer leaders, what have tHey said about tHe support tHey need, resources tHey need, concerns that tHey have. Del rio is a small community, not something tHeyre used to, although that He ever gotten used to it since january. THeyre really concerned. THe number of people Here represent a third of tHe population Here in Del Rio and tHeyre just not, tHey dont have capability to deal with it. THeres one ngo that Helps migrants get on tHe way, purchasing flights and bus tickets to otHer parts of tHe united states, but tHey dont have tHe Capability And Volunteer population to Help Border Patrol deal with tHe situation tHe way tHey would say in rio grand Valley And Charity groups that can Help with this. Thank you so much for painting a picture for us, Helping us get a better understanding to give us a clear view of whats happening. Appreciate it. Thank you. Experts voting in support of Emergency Use Authorization of a third dose of Pfizer Vaccine for people 65 and older, and those at high risk of severe infection. THe group decided against recommending third shots for all americans 16 and over, concluding it is too soon to offer Booster Shots for everyone. THe fda expresses several concerns about lack of Safety And Efficacy data for Booster Shots in young adults. Joining me to discuss, tHe Associate Dean of global Health at tHe university of alabama in birmingham. Good to see you, dr. Sag. Are you disappointed or in agreement . I am mostly in agreement. We said from tHe beginning were going to follow tHe data. Data for people over tHe age of 65 and those with underlying conditions and those people who especially have immuno compromised states are ones we have data for to show this. We dont have data yet for people who are younger who dont have tHese conditions. THeyre following tHe data. This is a work in progress. Expect this to be incremental improvement for third shot. Were going to be in this for tHe long haul. You will encourage patients that are at risk, individuals or people 65 and older to follow tHe recommended fda approval, right, on tHe third dose . Absolutely. But will this make it harder to convince tHe unvaccinated to get vaccinated . It might. And it is mostly because a lot of folks arent used to tHe usual process by which we approve vaccines. Look at influenza. We know now that people over 65 get a little higHer dose. That didnt happen overnight. That was a decade or more of research that incrementally grew and was done under tHe cover from general public. People didnt watch it happening. This has a huge spotlight on it. Everybody is watching how tHe sausage is made, if you will, in terms of how science moves forward. People that might not understand it might get confused about messaging but it is simple. If youre unvaccinated, get vaccinated. If you are vaccinated, wait your turn for tHe booster. Lets talk about tHe decision of Rationing Care that a lot of hospitals are having to make. A hospital in montana has been so overwHelmed that tHey were forced to start Rationing Care earlier this week. Again, not just montana. We Heard stories from many states. What are your thoughts about choices tHeyre having to make because tHeir medical staff might be overstressed or tHey may not have enough beds. THere are a host of reasons why tHeyre Rationing Care. It is our worst nightmare. Its what a lot of us were thinking if you turn tHe clock back to april of 2020, we went into lockdown. All tHe Health'>Public Health officials were worried about being swamped by covid. It happened in milan, italy In March and april of 2020. We saw that and hoped it wouldnt happen in tHe u. S. It is happening now. Case out of coleman, alabama, guy with a Heart attack, Heart disease, had to go through 43 different hospitals to find an icu bed, finally got tHere, ended up dying. THese stories will continue to mount. Heres tHe tragedy. Most of tHe bids being filled now, especially in tHe icu, are unvaccinated people. 90 . 90 . So if you can imagine tHe world wHere everyone was vaccinated, we wouldnt be having tHese problems. What we need to do is push hard on everyone to get that first vaccine. You can talk about boosters, but still need to protect ourselves, not only to protect people from covid but also if tHe beds get filled up, it effects everyone. If this is tHe case now as we Head into tHe fall season, winter months wHere tHe expectations are relatively high about spike in cases, whats your concern short term about availability of Health-care'>Health Care to meet demands that covid is placing on us. I am concerned. It is what i worried about, what all Health'>Public Health officials worried about. THe problem is that were still in tHe Heart of a Health'>Public Health emergency, underscore that, emergency. We have been in it awhile. THe problem is tHe public is tired of Hearing it, tHeyve gone Tone Deaf to messaging that doesnt change tHe problem. THe problem is still tHere. Hopefully we can come togetHer as a country, fight this infection as if we are fighting a common enemy which we are, get folks vaccinated, keep people out of tHe hospital. It is simple things we can do, wearing a mask in public, avoiding large crowds. Everybody knows tHe drill. Lets just do it and relieve hospitals of this pressure so that everyone can have a spot wHen tHey get sick. Stop prolonging this in perpetuity it seems. Dr. Mike sag, good to see you. Stay well. Thank you, you too. Still aHead, toxic for teens. Stunning new report reveals how damaging instagram can be for young people, how tHe company knew all about it. Facebook and instagram and how harmful tHey are to our Health. THe Wall Street Journal publisHed leaked internal documents tHey say prove facebook is aware of tHe platforms negative effects. Top facebook officials were warned by tHeir own researcHers that because of instagram, quoting now, we make Body Image issues worse for one in three teen girls. End quote. Joining us, rihanna anderson, psychologist at university of Michigan Department of Health-behavior'>Health Behavior and Health education. And josh golan, Executive Director of fair play, a group trying to stop planned release of an instagram specifically for kids under tHe age of 13. Good to see you both. THe negative effects of Social Media continue to be studied, but from your view what are tHe internal documents saying how facebook sees itself, i mean, to have such an internal review launcHed. Sure. So we know that facebook is a company that gets a benefit from users using services more frequently. It is one thing to say tHeyre incentivizing folks with addictive product which tHey are, but to launch something like this is something thats been leading up to tHe past ten years or so, tHeres overwHelming evidence from Psychology Literature saying tHe more time that tHeyre spending online, especially those three hours a day or more, that it is leading to increased depression, anxiety, loneliness. THese factors contribute to suicide. Fred, were talking about a company that knows whats going on and doing this type of research is really just corresponding with research we already have in literature. So tHen what does it say about tHe responsibility that facebook who owns instagram is willing to take, what are tHey going to do with tHe responsibility . Yeah. As you already indicated, we know up to four out of ten girls are saying tHeyre experiencing Body Image issues. Not just to girls in particular, boys are saying it to a lesser degree, to some degree as well. We look at one in ten youth that have Suicidal Ideation as a result of Ig And Facebook. WHen you think about tHeir responsibility in tHe same way all technology in some facets can be good, we have to understand what are tHe elements that are so challenging. Within tHe app, tHere are things causing people to stay in tHe app, spend more time, to think tHeyre normal things. We know tHere are toxic elements that are part of it. THe responsibility tHen falls on Ig And Facebook to say do we want a better product, not just better for our bottom line, dollar sign, do we want a better product for tHe world. Josh, instagram did put out a statement in response to tHese reports, saying, i am quoting now, were starting to understand tHe types of content some people feel may contribute to negative social comparison and are exploring ways to prompt tHem to look at different topics if tHeyre repeatedly looking at this type of content. Josh, i mean, facebook purchased instagram back in 2012. Is it doing enough now to respond to tHese findings of negative effects . Absolutely not. First of all, wHen tHe researcHers brought tHese findings to senior leadership at facebook, tHey were ignored. Facebook cast doubt on tHe research that dr. Anderson mentioned and said that tHe jury is still out on what tHe effects are wHen tHey were sitting on research tHey knew. Now that tHeyre caught Red Handed and documents are leaked, tHeyre saying tHese things, but actions speak much louder than words. THeyve known this for many years and havent done anything. In fact, wHen presented with this research, one of tHe things tHey decided to do is extend our Brand And Product and create an instagram for even younger kids. I dont think we can trust facebook to do tHe right thing Here.
