Reporter were continuing to see a significant Law Enforcement presence here right outside of the capitol as well as the what we know is that Capitol Police is working closely with federal and Law Enforcement partners here in washington and as well as in the surrounding suburbs. Weve asked for assistance for the National Guard. Even though it would suggest there would be a small amount of albeit online, concerning chatter, this is according to the department of Homeland Security, that says there is concerning online chatter about elected officials, about threats against democrats, about threats against liberal churches and members of the Jewish Community even though that is a small amount of chatter, Capitol Police is taking no chances. The information theyre working with right now is that hundreds of people may descend on to washington and people want to cause Violence Today and tomorrow and it isnt just among the people that they are concerned that may come as part of the protest but also they are concerned about Violence Erupting between cou counterprotesters. So Capitol Police is taking a much more forwardleaning approach this time, kate. Here is a key line from this very new reporting from my colleagues, this dhs Intelligence Assessment that says in effect lone offenders in small groups of individuals could mobilize to violence with little to no warning particularly in response to confronta confrontational encounters, and here is a key concept, calls for escalation by key influencers. You could fight against the former president and his statements and in his campaign against you, or you could retire. And what you have here is a congressman who said he is returning back home in part because of the threats that he feels like hes facing, because of his vote after the January 6 insurrection to itmpeach the former president and because he feels like fighting to return to a party to believe in things he doesnt believe in isnt worth it any more. One concern that ive heard you have surrounding this, and just in general with the nature of these the threats, is how dispersed the intelligence. What do you mean by that . Well, if your looking at the classic kinds of intelligence, i did chasing Extremist Groups around the world, youre looking at one entity, that entity has leadership and recruiting, Training And Fundraising and the operational command that said send someone out for a operation. That is a dangerous organization but you know something that you could target with things like informants, email intercepts. And if you look at the movement, movement across america among angry people, including people that think that the election was stolen, that is not a group. So where do you target email collection, where do you target informants. Even if your trying to look at social media, how many people are chattering about this Event Today that you dont know are out there. Sow dont really have anything to target. And for an intelligence professional, that is really tough. And then we have to look at the spark and the inspiration behind the violence. The statement from Donald Trump overnight that Whitney Wild was getting at but he said our hearts and minds are with the people being persecuted so unfairly as relating to January 6th. First off, i want everybody to look at your screen of what trump is calling unfairly persecuted. This is what happened in the January 6 investigation by the fbi. 608 have been charged and 70 have pleaded guilty and there is much more to come. What do you think of trumps words, are those dangerous words . Yes. Extremist in my experience require leadership. Most of us as Human Thinks small. There is 330 Million americans and most of us dont think big. Leadership in this circumstance gets people to get their heads out of the Fox Hole and say there is a bigger world out there that i should be angry about. There are enemies stealing elections and erasing american democracy, leadership gets people to say, it is not just my local community or concerns i might have in my local city. You have to go to Washington And Protest what is happening nationally. I dont think in any case you would have this kind of movement with this prospect of violence without leadership and that leadership includes the former president of the united states. When you look at, as you call it, the movement, even if this turns out to be 200 people and nothing happens, im curious as to does all of this, the massive metal fence barrier, the special alert designation, the National Guard at the ready, does this, does this have to be the Security Posture and approach going forward after January 6 because of the challenges that you lay out . I would be concerned about looking at a demonstration that fizzles as you said with 200 people and drawing a ton of conclusions. How many people do the 200 represent. We have a major event of deterrence and hundreds people arrest after January 6 and that said there is a lot of people who might have showed up tomorrow but not because they dont feel that violence is okay but because they want to be careful. I dont think that will indicate that the Move Smt over. And let me be clear about another issue. Why is that happening . Because going into the next Election Cycle the message is that america is being stolen from you, you need to be more aggressive. I dont expect to see less of this. I anticipate more. So things like fencing around State Capitols or the u. S. Capitol might become more common, not less. And to your point, the Cnn Poll numbers that came out this week that say mamong republican, 70 say that biden did not believe the election and 54 believes that biden did not win and it is not going away that movement, that sentiment that belief in unfortunately lies is growing. So where is this headed . Joining me now is dr. Sanjay gupta and medical Analyst And Dr. Leana wen. What do you think is going to happen today, sanjay . Well right now theyre trying to grapple with the larger questions around this issue, does the Safety And Effectiveness data around Booster Warrant the approval for people across the board, 16 and older. That is what theyre trying to figure out. Is there a general Boost Ear Approval that theyre going to make. There is a lot of big questions that theyre going to deal with. But what i think ultimately and i hate making predictions but if i had to, i would say that theyre ultimately going to likely approve the idea of a booster, but make it clear that the cdc should recommend it for certain people. People for example over a certain age, when you look at the data carefully, you could make the argument that there is some benefit of these boosters for people over the age of 60 or 65 for example. But also remind people that as things stand now, the vaccines work really, really well for the majority of us. So that is likely where it is to come down. But i have to tell you, kate, lena and i have a idea how this committee will be going ahead of time and this one is contentious and a bit of a surprise. Dr. Wen, when it comes to what happens and how it is characterized afterward, is this a difference in your mind between recommending boosters and also just allowing Booster Shots . Yes, at this point i would find it really surprising, kate, if the fda does not come out in favor of boosters in some way. At least allowing boosters to be used. When we look at the israeli data and there are scientists that just presented the data to the Fda Committee, i found it to be extremely compelling. They found for example that getting that third Booster Dose reduced infection by 11 fold and more than 15 fold against severe infection for people over the age of 60. And so i think the burden of proof would be on the Fda Committee at this point to explain to the american people why we do not need boosters as in there are people who are vakd who want to get an additional level of protection, and the difference between allowing them and recommending the boosters is important. But i think in this case, we just we need to look at the bigger picture. If the biden administration had not come out earlier last month and said that boosters will be needed at some point, imagine the out cry. Because we have israel and the Ux K. Allowing boosters. We should be following suit here until waiting until hospitalizations and deaths again spiking. Weve been behind in data this whole time. Lets not be behind the data again. This gets to something that i think is fundamentally extremely important as we look into this. Were talking, as dr. Wen is mentioning the israeli data on infections and immunity. There is a lot being made about Breakthrough Infections, sanjay and how Immunity Waynes over t time. Do you think that is the right metric for judging if boosters are needed. That is such a critical question. Even the Term Break through infection for a lot of people it is sort of denotes that the vac failed. That you broke through the armor of the vaccine. And i dont think that that is the way to look at it. If you think about how vaccines work, it was always mostly to protect people from getting severely ill. So much of the immunity occurs around the lungs to prevent the virus from getting into the lungs. There are some immunity in the upper airways but not as much so i dont think it is Way Surprise to the vaccine make thaerz people would still test positive after having been vaccinated. But if you look at the data that lena was talking about, 12 days after the boosters rolled out, you did see an increase in the level of protection against infection. But Take A Look at israel, just sort of overall throughout this pandemic, and we look at israel because theyve been ahead of the united states, theyve about 64 of the country that is vaccinated. Theyve been doing boosters since august. And to your point, kate, at the same time, they have some of the highest case rates now since the beginning of the pandemic. Despite all of that. So the good news is there is not the same proportional hospitalizations and deaths so were seeing a lot of cases still but not as much severe disease. And it kind of coming down to that fundamental point. What were the vaccines designed to do. Were they designed to prevent people from testing positive and having a quote unquote Breakthrough Infection or designed to protect people from getting sick. What we see out of israel suggests that it is latter and protecting people from getting sick. I think that probably is a slightly garrbled or misunderstood version of what he might have said which is something like we are just we want to be sure that were communicating well and there is no miscalculations, things like that. And some of the subsequent reporting has suggested that. So my at the end of the day my Bottom Line is i think general milley is right. He acted appropriately. And well hear more about it because he said in the interview hes ready to answer all of lawmakers questions on this when he testifies before them in a couple of weeks from now. I also want to you ask about the new Security Deal between the u. S. And australia and give them a submarine, the french are furious, the french Foreign Minister saying in an interview, this unilateral sudden and unforeseeable decision resembles what trump is doing. This is all about china. So why is france so openly outraged and taking it to the Trump Level . It is a lot of money. It is a very, very big deal. A very big blow to french industry, france has a Defense Industry that it is very proud of it. This is a big, Bold Strategic Move by the biden administration. I think it is fundamentally the correct orientation. The united states needs to focus on a Deterrent Strategy in asia. This gets other countries involved like australia, most importantly, and britain. It provides a kind of Reassurance And Deterrence that is important. Particularly to taiwan. If you look at the way that the taiwanese have responded you could see that this was a strategic move that has real benefits in terms of stabilizing that very uncertain situation between taiwan and china. Could it have been communicated better to the french . Could there have been more diplomacy around it . Probably, perhaps. But i do think this is a pretty big move, the french were going to be angry no matter what. Perhaps they could have been mollified a little bit more. And finally, Joe Biden has also just signed an Executive Order authorizing sanctions against anyone prolonging the ongoing conflict in ethiopia and this follows the reporting by our colleague and her reporting on the atrocities unfolding there. You could see it in her reporting. What do you think this move by biden will do . I dont think it will do much honestly. There has been pressure on the united states to kind of do something. It is a horrendous situation, it is a tough one. And the united states tends to impose sanctions honestly whether it doesnt really know what to do. It is a relatively painless way to do it. Americans dont feel it. It appeased a group or two in washington. I generally think they are often hurt the situation more than they help because the people that get hurt are ordinary people, when you block economic Contact Activity and aid. So if the biden administration wants to go in and try to solve it, that might be a more effective one. But that said, it is a very tough problem. Now all of this as Governor Greg Abbott announced yesterday that he was directing the Texas Department of public safety to shut six points of entry, blaming the Booiden Administratn and said at the points of entry, Dhs Firing Back yesterday saying that is not the case and that in fact the state of texas were to close points of entry, that would be against federal law. I asked the mayor of this city about this announcement by Governor Greg Abbott and he said that first of all these migrants are not coming in through points of entry. I saw it with my own eyes. Theyre crossing the rio grande. And he said this, kate, how about the federal government and the State Government come here, talk to the locals and fix the problem. Kate. Rosa, thank you. Also developing at this hour, a federal judge has denied a request from the Justice Department to put a freeze on the Texas Abortion Ban ahead of a full hearing. Thank you for being here. You signed on in support of the Justice Departments effort to stop this texas law. What is your reaction to this Judges Decision overnight . I think that has more to do with skcheduling than substance. October 1st is in a couple of weeks. But this law really defies the constitution by attacking womens rights, and it is really a threat to all americans, not just women in texas. Theyre trying to control women. And it encourages people to go out and sue their neighbors or even total strangers for Health Decisions that they have no business interfering with. The department of justice is obviously on it. We are supporting that case and i think people need to know that this fight is expanding well beyond texas. It is come here to pennsylvania and but for the veto of our democratic governor wed be experiencing similar laws here in the commonwealth. I was going to ask you that. What do you think is going to happen here, even after this hearing and on the texas laws as you said is october 1st. Because where do you see the momentum. And what does it mean for pennsylvania . I think there is Momentum Building in State Capitols that republicans dominate to pass Carbon Copies of what happened in texas. Certainly lawmakers here in Pennsylvania Support that. Again, but for the Veto Pen of our democratic governor, it would be law here. But i think what were really on a Collision Course for is a case that the Supreme Court will be hearing in their next session and presumably ruling on at some point next summer which is a direct attack on roe v. Wade out of the state of mississippi. And so i think all of this is coming together at a critically important time. There are State Lawmakers who are working overtime to control womens bodies and right now with the makeup of the united states Supreme Court, i think roe is very much at risk. It is why the states matters and why governors matter to veto those bad bills and why my work as Attorney General will continue to protect a womens right to choose. State senate republicans voted yesterday to try to force the top election officials to turn over millions of voters personal Information And Voting histories because they want to launch a review now on the 2020 election. I was there on Election Day and week after. We have talked about it since. There have been two audits of the vote if the commonwealth. No massive found. This is politically motivated.
