For election. The protective ring around the united States Capitol is Back Up ahead of a rally. Authorities worry it could bring new violence to the nations capitol. The fencing is only part of the upped Security Posture In Washington. The Capitol Police already have the d. C. National guard on alert. And cnn has learned the d. C. Metropolitan police will be fully activated on saturday. Increased security amid increased worries. Yes. Certainly there is still a lot of concern over this rally on saturday. Thats why overnight the fence is back. The Construction Workers were out here through the night into the morning, putting this together. Its now surrounding the entire capitol complex. In much the same way we saw in the days and weeks and months after the insurrection. So they were out all night putting these in. Theyre also using these concrete barriers to keep the fences in place so that No One can topple them over. Also, theres always been a concern over vehicles and whether or not someone would try to ram some kind of a vehicle into the capitol. Thats the other reason why. This goes all the way around. So up to constitution. Up constitution. All the way around independence. Obviously the entire complex now closed. People can still go in, but i think by tonight or so, were going to see some measure of stepped up security. Also i want to show you one other thing that we just learned. These fences here, that scott is showing you here, thats for the supreme court. Thats where we are. Thats expected to get the fencing here to perhaps today. We actually just saw a bunch of Police Officers and sheriffs officers from outside washington d. C. , baltimore, virginia, other officials, National Guard officials all having a meeting outside, going over some of the security measures, acquainting them with the area. Because obviously whats going to happen is theres going to be extra Police Officers here. We know the washington d. C. Police, the National Guard, but also outside jurisdictions are going to be helping here with security. All of this in anticipation of saturday, john. Setting the scene for us. Lets hope it is a peaceful demonstration, but obviously officials believe the precautions are necessary. Lets continue to discuss with me in studio to share the reporting and insights. The goal of the rally, the supporters of the rally say they want to protest in support of those who stormed that building back on January 6th. That has become a giant legal challenge for those being charged. More than 500 cases. A Big Political Challenge as well. You have new Reporting Today about the mood of members of congress who, of course, were there when their building was under siege. Its particularly among republicans. Even as there are renewed fears of political violence. Gop leaders have not condemned the event and its actively encouraged people to skip it. Thats an interesting die nam. I have more information. Were not going to see a lot of lawmakers at this rally. They decided its toxic. Why not have a joint republican statement saying you know, stay away from this. We dont support this cause . Jop leaders find themselves in a tough spot. They dont want to be seen as pro insurrectionists. They are dealing with a base that believes the Big Lie. That increasingly does believe the attack was justified and Gop Leaders dont want to alienate that section of the base. Thats why you see this mushy messaging from the Gop Leadership. This is one of the pro trump conservatives in the house. Im not sure ill be able to make the rally. We know there were people that were arrested. They have been so badly mistreated. Theyve been charged for storming the capitol on January 6th. They get their day in court. John thune, i havent talked to a single republican in the senate that is encouraged or enabled anything like that. Tommy tubberville, i havent heard anything about it. Ly not be there. Police need to take a firm line. Anybody gets out of line, they need to whack them. You have in the senate some republicans trying to create arms length distance. Right. Lets not forget Matt Gaetz and Marjorie Taylor Greene kind of started this in a way. They took it to i believe it was the goj and tried to get in the building and see these and tried to have a protest of their own several months ago. I think the other thing were seeing is its politically advantageous for the members on the far right to start talking about this. They were having trouble talking about January 6th, figuring out how they could. Now its gone this other direction where its about the freedom of these people who are unjustly as they say, held. So its also a way for them to actually be able to talk about this. And not have to deal with what actually happened. Its a reminder as we hope there is no violence and even people who believe loony things are allowed to demonstrate in the united states. They are 100 right to protest. Lets hope it peaceful. Adam kinzinger is one of two people looking into what happened, trying to get to the Root And Cause of it and look forward. Heres his take on whats going to play out saturday. This overthrow the Government Fetic that exists, i dont understand it. Theres a lot of bored people out there that probably never served a day in their life in the military and get to go play dressup. Kinzinger is a veteran. He has the standing to make that point about people pretending to serve in the military. But is there a risk in almost trying to make fun of them . Because the insurrection itself was deadly serious. And now you have this followup. Again, people have a right to demonstrate. It is a reminder that there are forces in American Politics who a, have demonstrated. They will be violent and b, just this is based on a lie. Based on the idea that trump won. Yeah. I mean, kinzinger is clearly frustrated. I wouldnt say hes been routinely down playing this. Thats why hes on the January 6th commission and hes one of the very few republicans that is willing to actually say what happened. The reality of what happened on January 6th. And why its so deadly to not just their party, but to the country. Republicans have repeatedly tried to, quote, turn the page on this, which is really them trying to revise and edit it and act as though it didnt happen rather than yes, there are some senators speaking out, but you arent seeing any concerted effort from Party Leaders or from the party at large to tell their voters the truth. To them them look, this isnt accurate. And that biden legitimately won the election. But theres no right. Look at whats happening to kinz kinzinger. Look at liz cheney. Theyre getting primaried from the right because of standing up. But to your point, it should not take courage to tell the truth. It should be normal behavior to tell the truth. These republican leaders who want armed distance could say i didnt support it. The question is can you speak out . People have a right to demonstrate. Could you speak out to say youre wrong . Go home and think about it. Look at this. 77 of republicans believe that Joe Biden did not win legitimately. 77 believe that. And 54 of them of those republicans believe Theres Shol Id evidence. Because theyve been told repeatedly by trump and others theres evidence. There is no evidence. This is why its just it should be an imperative of not trump republican leaders to carry this conversation. Sadly every day until its done. And those Poll Numbers sadly are not surprising. Not only does trump continue to perpetuate the Big Lie, but so does Gop Leadership. Kevin mccarthy said at one point, No One is questioning the legi legitimacy of the election. Thats not true. His approval went down as the virus got out of control. Thats why you saw the White House at least in part decide to finally go down this path. I they does suggest that there are good politics here for enforcing these. Theyre a hope. In the polls say they evidence. Be bold, you might get blowback. Its controversial, but youll benefit down the road. So the Virginia Governors race is the next big test. Its this year. A lot of this will be litigated in 2022. Some of it between democrats and republicans when we get to the midterms. Some of it you see in the primaries, in ohio right now. House member is running against the republican governor in the primary, mike dewine. Dewine has said he would put a Mask Mandate in place but the Legislature Wouldnt allow them. Hes urged people and told schools you want Mask Mandates . Do it. This is his republican challenger. He wants schools that are not requiring masks to act now. Im serious. You want to get your please, please, please think about this in the end. Best way to do that is to put a Mask Mandate on. This is more of a trump primary challenge there. This will be litigated in every way. Including in republican primaries. Well, i mean, dewine during the course of the pandemic got fairly high marks before there were vaccines. But republicans in the state have been fighting him Tooth And Nail for every Mandate Or Regulation he put in place. And youre right. Everything when you talk about Ohio Republicans and the ohio primary, trump is the one the only word you need to know and renasi is pandering hard to those voters that are angry with dewine and just want to live their lives as if no pandemic exists. I assume he also means to republicans in the sense that as a parent, its like were putting the kids in the middle of this masked politics debate. It drives me up the tree. Right. I think republicans are banking on the idea that theres backlash. Democrats are saying theres far more frustration in america with the people unvaccinated and the reason why we still are in this pandemic. Five key senators, pour of them republicans, are still not clear on whether they will seek reelection. With a 50 50 split, the fight for Senate Control is already a drama. A retirement or retirements among these five more senior senators would reshape the Midterm Math and could reshape the senate it. Manu is bringing us this reporting. Lets put up on the screen who youre talking about. From north dakota, iowa, alaska, and vermont. Layeahy is the only democrat. Four of the the four republicans there would be either chairman or key members of the leadership if the republicans were to take back power. What are they waiting for . Theyre struggling with this, some of them. John thune indicated he was struggling with this. One of the reasons is he said hes been doing this for 25 years, traveling back and forth. He said its a sixyear commitment. Hes also struggling with the possibility that if he continues to stay, perhaps when Mitch Mcconnell steps aside as leader, he could potentially move and try to compete for that leadership position. He said that is one factor. If he decides to step aside, that changes the leadership dynamic. Chuck grassley has senior leadership positions. Respectively in their own caucuses. If one of them steps aside, that shakes things up. Grassley turns 88 tomorrow and suggested hes going to make a decision sooner than he anticipated in november. Some of the other ones, murkowski facing a trumpinspired challenger back home. Has not made a decision whether to run for reelection. And Ron Johnson, that seat could flip next year in wisconsin. Leaders in the republican party want him to make a decision. He told me this is on the Back Burner for him. He said he made a decision in his first race in 2010 to run in may of that midterm year. Perhaps he can wait longer but republicans want him to make a decision. Its a fascinating dynamic. Its a huge player on top of what is look at the map. There are 34 senate seats. A third of the senate is up every two years. You look at that, you see the red and think the burden is on the republicans. A lot of those republican seats are in pretty safe republican areas. But you did mention wisconsin is a potential flip. If that would go. Iowa democrats would say if its not chuck grassley, we would make a run at it if you go there. Normally in a situation like this when the stakes are so high, the leadership on both sides, i assume Chuck Schumer is telling pat leahy, please. Sometimes incumbents can raise a lot of money. Why wait . Whats the issue . Well, a man who said these are difficult decisions. These people have been in the senate for so long. And clearly they arent ready to make the decision yet. I mean, and again, yeah, if schumer is in leahys ear, dont make us have to worry about this seat, because again, in a situation in 2022 where its a 50 50 senate, you can see republicans trying to make a run at Leahys Seat to scramble the board and make it harder for democrats to maintain power. Its a different kind of republican party in vermont. You take a high powered incumbent out. You throw another Wild Card into what is already a volatile here. And a primary. I mean, think about it. The longer someone has been sitting in a seat, the more people have been eyeing that seat for years and years and years and waiting for their chance. And sometimes theres an anointed person that ascends. But particularly in the republican party, that hasnt worked recently. Were talking about potentially nasty competitive primaries should any of should a lot of these folks decide to leave. I think leadership wants to avoid that. To that point, if you put the five senators Back Up there, Donald Trump loves Ron Johnson this. Hes not a man of thune or murkowski. In December Trump endorses primary challenger against john thune. Another one, trump Prods Johnson to run again. March 2021 on cnn. Trump says Hell Campaign against murkowski next year in alaska. Theres always a trump factor. Always. With ron john, it might be one where democrats want him to run. They view him as vulnerable. Wisconsin trended blue in the last election. Johnson has trended Conspiracy Theory. They view that as a major vulner vulnerability. And thune, i asked him about the trump factor. Is this weighing on you. He said i moved on. He said its not going to affect him. He feels okay. Murkowski, while she does have a trumpbacked opponent in this state, the Rank Choice Voting in alaska. Thats a different type of primary system. It could benefit her ultimately, and theres confidence in her camp that even if she does run, shell back the trump forces. A big question, mel is right. If Ron Johnson runs, can someone who has aligned himself run in a pivotal swing state. Thats one of the most heavily contested issues. Murkowski, when she ran cycles again, she had a Tea Party Challenger beat her in the primary and then she won election as a writein candidate. Its epic. That would be high volunteer. Again, but it gets at you. Her history tells you you ride these movements in and out of these campaign cycles. And how much they want to fight. I mean, if you do have a contested primary, and in her case, it was a contested, the right, how much do you want this, and how much do you want to fight for what staying In Washington and in this position . Its interesting Watching Grassley at this Hearing Yesterday with the u. S. Gymnasts talking about the horrific conduct of the fbi and the Olympic Committee in the investigation. As you mentioned, he turns 88 tomorrow. Heres what he told you. I think i keep the same schedule as when i was 65 or 40. He is, he does the 99 counties of iowa every year. But 88 years old. Run for reelection. Theres been a lot of talk over time he was hoping his son would replace him. All indications are leaning forward . It seems that way. This would be a crowded primary if he steps aside. He does keep a very active schedule. He sleeps early but wakes up early. He runs almost every single morning. He goes to all 99 counties in iowa and prides himself in that and says he feels as good as he did 20 or even 40 years ago. In taking away from my interviews with the members, he sounded pretty serious that he may do this again. So well just have to see. But what decision he makes will be significant. It will shake up republican politics if he steps aside. These retirements not only could impact control of the senate next year but reshape the institution. One trend were seeing is loot of institutionalists are hanging up Voting Cards and who is vying to replace them . Trumploving fire brands. Look at Moe Brooks vying to replace shelby in alabama who is an Aproep Ray or the, chairman, longtime veteran. A boardman who cut the infrastructure deal. The people looking to replace him oppose it. I suspect in the end, thats why murkowski runs. She doesnt want to see that happen in her state. But thats why we watch. Its going to be a fascinating cycle ahead.
