The same kind of major support from Gop Lawmakers as we saw on January 6. In fact, new Cnn Reporting reveals republicans are trying to distance themselves from the event. No sitting member of congress is scheduled to appear. A former Trump Campaign Staffer organized the event and despite concerns that attendees could be armed he said that will not be the case. Weve got a largely peaceful crowd. Weve had two events in washington, d. C. So far at the Department Of Justice and the prison and there have been to incidents so far. So we do know security has been increased ahead in advance of this weekend. Theyre not giving saul of the details for obvious reasons. But we can see some of it out there. Reporter well that is right, erica. So were here at Constitution And Delaware northeast, right outside of the capitol. Here is this fencing, that familiar sight here in washington, d. C. After the insurrection on January 6. In addition to the fencing there is a Security Camera up here on the corner. Even though Rally Organizers say this is going to be a peaceful event and there have been no issues in the past i think it is important to note that Law Enforcement has noted in an intelligence assessments, they know the past events surrounding this justice for January 6 issue, have been peaceful, they are not taking the risk. So theyve asked local Law Enforcement to be on standby. We know the metropolitan Police Department has already said they canceled days off, theyre going to have full staffing on saturday and in Addition Theyve asked the Department Of Defense if they could have the National Guard ready. The details of that we dont know because know no one is giv away the playbook to someone who might want to come to washington, d. C. And cause harm. The little we do know from the Department Of Defense, this is a Man Power ask, if wasnt an enormous ask but there are still two days, anything could change. But i do want to go back to what Rally Organizers say is going to be the reality here on the ground. We know that Law Enforcement is prepared for hundreds of people to ascend here to washington, d. C. Here are the rules according to the Rally Organizers for this day, for everybody who is coming. They say traveling in group, be respectful of the Security Team and of Law Enforcement. Here is an interesting thing that theyre telling people to do. Do not wear or bring political paraphernalia, apparently trying to distance themselves from the politics and instead focus on the people who are charged in this insurrection. They also say wear red, white and blue, bring american flags and signs to show support. They say if you see trouble, record it. Signal for help. The hope here is that with the Rally Organizer said that will happen. That it will be peaceful and no trouble. If that happens, the Capitol Police Chief said this fence will come down in short Order Fooli Foll following this rally. Back to you. They are not criticizing the event, hoping to avoid being associated with the rally supporting the capitol insurrectionist. Melanie zanona joining us with more on that. They havent been promoting the event and on the some on the far right have warned it is a false Flag Operation designed to trap them. There is a lot of concern in the gop about the potential political fallout. They dont want to have this weaponized against them by democrating but the republicans are not con temming the Rally Ort causes. There have been multiple that expressed Support And Sympathy for the Jails Insurrectionist and there are two candidates who are speaking at the rally on saturday and a number of local justice for j6 planned over the next month or so so this is putting gop leaders in a tough spot because on the the one hand they dont want to be seen as proinsurrectionist but they are dealing with a base that increasingly sympathetic toward the rioters and believe the attack was justified. Adam kinzinger, who voted to impeach trump and serves on the committee investigating the attacks, was asked about this on new day. Take a listen. If we have to have a fence put up every time someone goes to rally it is final for the republican party to denounce milit militiaism, and see we take our disagreements in congress and we dont doo this violently. Tomorrow a request from pfizer to approve a Booster Shot and this morning were learning new details. There was data from three separate reports that support the need for a third dose. Among the reports is a study from israel that has some interesting data here. Researchers looked at adults who receive a received a booster and is a mong those 12 and older, 12 days after boosters, researchers found that rates of break through infections were lower by a factor of 11. 3 and the rate of severe illness was lower by a factor of 19. 5 among those who received a booster. And pfizer has released Data Showing waning immunity as it tracked those who received its vaccine and we anticipate this study will be discussed as well tomorrow. Among the pfizer data is though shaz about a week to two months after receiving a vaccine, efficacy was 96. 2 among those fully vaccinated. And you see here on this chart, it waned and by four months it was at an efficacy of 83. 7 . And this is evidence just again of that waning immunity. And of course, erica and jim, there are arguments on all sides when it comes to boosters. Some say that we do Need Boosters because of the waning immunity, some argue against it and say our vaiccines are workig at a effective level and some say we still need more data. So these studies are just part of those ongoing arguments. It is a Hung Jury on that it seems. So moderna said theyre also developing a new booster to fight covid19 variants. Where does that stand . That is right. Moderna has initiated the submission of data to the fda on its booster. So we do anticipate that we could have the same discussion about Modernas Vaccine next. And when it comes to the boosters, i guess the next steps are similar to what we saw in december when vaccines were authorized. Data first goes to the fda, the fda makes a decision then the cdc signs off on recommending the vaccine or not. So well see those same steps with boosters. And it is interesting, jim, we do anticipate this Meeting Tomorrow and then we just saw this news or this announcement that the Cdc Advisory Committee on immunizations, they will be meeting next week. Reporter at least 18 states have enacted 31 laws with new restrictions on Voting Methods since the beginning of the year. Most concerning are being called Election Sub Version laws. Impacting how elections are run and who is in charge. They didnt like the fact that they lost those states and so now theyre rewriting the rules for the future. But theyre doing it in a way that will make it extremely problematic because they make it very partisan. What you have with local officials, Secretary Of State and others, are people who are trained to oversee elections. That is their job, to do that. Now what you see in these states like texas, arizona, georgia, theyre putting it in the hands of legislatures, the political legislatures. Reporter case in point. Georgias Election Integrity Act of 2021. 98 pages long. It was signed in law in march by governor brian Cam Ep repeating that republican mantra. It bill makes it easy to vote and hard to cheat. Reporter among its provisions, it strips power from the Georgia Secretary of state and allows lawmakers to intervene in how counties administer and count the vote. It sounds like it makes it easier for the politicians to cheat . You could have that perception. Reporter Tony Adams is the elections supervisor. I believe it is a Mass Ifr Power grab. The Secretary Of State has been removed as a Voting Member of the state election board. Basically tossing the Secretary Of State aside for a political person . Exactly. Reporter in arizona, republican legislators have made their Power Grab blatant. Passing a law that strips some Election Oversight powers from the Arizona Secretary of state currently a democrat and gives them to the arizona Attorney General currently a republican. It expires in less than two years making sure it is a republican who oversees any disputes in the important midterm elections. Gates said his partys Big Lie about Vote Fraud is getting way out of hand. Im worried about the people who look at this now, theyve listened to their leaders, their republican leaders and theyre now convinced that our system is corrupt, that there is some large Conspiracy And Weve yet to see many republicans speak out and tell people, no, the election was fair and it is time to move on and enough is enough. Reporter in texas, which trump won, republican legislators passed a law that bans Drivethru And 24hour voting favored in houston and creates new hurdles for mailin voters. The Texas Legislation also makes it a crime for election workers to interfere with partisan poll watchers. Were at a Tipping Point as a nation and our democracy is at stake. Reporter democratic legislators like Carl Sherman fled the state trying to prevent a vote on the the bill. The standoff ended after 38 days. It matters because weve got a long history of Cherry Picking who could vote and who cannot vote. Reporter if all of these Election Laws being surfaced in republicanled states seem like a coordinated effort, that is because it is. We have honed in on these eight specific focused states. Reporter a former Trump Administration who now heads up the conservative Heritage Action for america said that the group had made recommendations to several states which ended up in election related bills. From there were working with the State Legislators to make sure they have all of the information that me need to draft the bills and in some cases we draft them for them or we have a sentinel on our behalf give them the Model Legislation so it has the grassroots from the Bottom Up type of vibe. Reporter Donald Trumps Big Lie and his Partys Willingness to go along with the facade is now the biggest threat to free and fair elections we face. It used to be unthinkable to contemplate Election Sub Version in the united states. It is not only become thinkable, but become something that we need to spend the next few years guarding against. Secretary hobbs, we have some new Cnn Polling and the numbers give you pause. 78 of republicans in this poll say President Biden did not legitimately win enough votes to be president. 54 of republicans say there is no solid evidence that President Biden didnt win. There is no evidence to support that. I think the question at this point so many months in is how do you combat that . Well, and that is a majority of the republican party. But certainly not a majority of the voters in arizona. So i think that is the good news. That reasonable folks understand that the election was free and fair and the results we certified were accurate and that is the truth about the election. And were going to continue to tell that truth to anyone who will listen. And i think there is more and more of those folks in arizona as this socalled audit continues to drag on. Which is encouraging because we know that the Big Lie are incredibly vocal, they are loud. As we look at this, i know the Campaign Legal Center is calling on congress now to push this freedom to vote act. So senate democrats announcing this on tuesday. For folk not familiar, i want to go through, it is easier to register to vote, Election Day is a public holiday and ensure states have early voting for federal elections, allow all voters to request mailin ballots also bolster Election Security and overhaul how new house districts are drawn. The reality is that this faces long odds in the senate as were look at this. So if that doesnt pass, what is next . Well, first of all, im hopeful that Senator Manchins efforts in the senate will bear fruit. Because as you know, he had asked for changes in the bill, he has now gotten a bill that he likes, that all 50 democrats like. And his goal is to find some republicans to support it. Parts of this bill were passed unanimously by the senate in the Voting Rights Act a couple of years ago. So there has in the past been bipartisan support. But i think the real battle here, as you say, is whether there are going to be national rules that protect the freedom to vote. That ensure that citizens will be able to get to polls or Vote Absentee or by mail, one of the important provisions of this bill responding to republican claims that there could be Election Fraud is to establish a national list of acceptable voter i. D. So that they can respond to claims that people may be trying to vote without correct i. D. , without being who they claim to be. There is to be clear no proof that that ever happens, but it is important to increase public confidence, particularly with all of the lies being told by the former President And Party leaders that there is something wrong with our elections. Which is of course fundamentally very damaging to our democracy. I want to follow up on one point you made. Youre confident with some of the changes, Right And Senator manchin said in the wake of that announcement on tuesday that hes talking to people and he thinks he could really shore up the republican votes needed. You talk about bipartisan support in the past. Realistically, do you see that Support Today in 2021 . Well, i think various senators republican senators have supported aspect of this new bill. Senator murkowski has worked with Senator Manchin on the voting Rights Restoration portions. There are other parts of this bill that have had bipartisan support in the past. And i think the republicans are in the senate are going to have to look at this and say there are support across the country, the majority supporting the provisions of this bill, do they really want to be seen as antivoting making it harder to vote, do they want to be seen as in favor the partisan gerrymanders and an important piece of this as you mentioned is that it will now be clear that gerrymandering, drawing districts for partisan reasons to disadvantage the other party is illegal and can be challenged in federal court. And citizens support that. Theyve supported independent commissions at clc that has been active in helping promote around the country. So so, as we keep an eye on that. Secretary hobbs, were focused on what is happening on saturday in washington. This rally in support of the insurrectionists, weve been talking so much about the security measures. There are not republican lawmakers who are slated to speak at that. Theyve been trying to distance themselves to it as weve reported here on cnn. Im curious though, do you think there are enough republican voices speaking up to condemn to continue to condemn what happened on January 6, as we just heard, from Bill Gates in your state on the the Maricopa County Board Of Supervisors saying there need to be more voices here. Yeah, im absolutely in agreement with what Supervisor Gates and i think that is really part of the problem. We have elected leaders in our state who know the truth, they sat and certified the Election Results in november and theyve been silent. And because the political consequences or whatever reason, and it is just wrong. The truth about the election is that it was fair, secure and accurate and we need more leaders on both sides of the aisle who are willing to stand up and defend that. Really quickly, this polling found 51 of likely elected officials would over turn the results of a future election. 52 doesnt have confidence in the elections and that it will reflect the will of the people. Secretary hobbs, do you think that damage is permanent . I think that damage is going to be long lasting. And we have folks, trump and his allies who are continuing to to promote these allegations, make up new allegations every single day about what did or didnt happen. And there is just to basis. Because as you know the last time this happened in 2019, congress and then President Trump, they suspended the Debt Limit through july of this year. I wonder, why is adding to the Debt Limit a Red Line now for the republican leadership but it was not then . Well republicans are not going to be a Rubber Stamp to this reckless spending that the democrats are now proposing. What you saw last year were five bipartisan Coronavirus Relief bills. The suspending of the Debt Ceiling was a bipartisan bill that came forward and that is what we ought to be doing here. But were not. The new administration, they passed a 1. 9 trillion Covid Relief Bill but only 9 of the money really went to covid relief and to health care. That is that stat is arguable, as you know. Right now theyre talking about 3. 5 additional trillion dollars of spending. Not a single republican is going to vote for that. And the democrats have the house, they have the senate, they have the White House. They have the capacity to raise the Debt Ceiling on their own if they want to go it alone on the the spending and at the taxes and this bill has included in it 1. 75 trillion of additional borrowing capacity, going on to the debt. But get my point on consistency, dont you, senator because barring was not a problem for the 2017 republican tax cuts. There was no raising of hands, gnashing of teeth by republicans then. You get point. Why not then and so much now. The Debt Ceiling needs to be raised and the democrats want to raise it by a lot for a lot of spending which to me is big government socialism. And im just not going to be a Rubber Stamp to that nor are any of the republicans that ive talked to. Lets talk about so we have a 50 50 senate. That is what the american people have given us. Which is a mandate to move to the middle. President Biden Ran for office as a centrist. But were seeing a lurch to the left, a dramatic change in the role of government in peoples lives and what theyre talking about is the biggest Tax And Spending bill in the last 50 years. That is the kind of thing that the democrats are proposing. Lets move on well get an answer on tax cuts. Lets move on to afghanistan. There has been, and youve noted this, criticism of the biden withdrawal, not just from republicans like yourself but also from democrats. Looking ahead, i want to talk about solutions because we often talk about or try to talk about solutions on this broadcast. Do you believe that a solution is to send u. S. Forces back into afghanistan . To redeploy for instance to help evacuate remaining americans but also for a counterterrorism capability, would you support that . There is a real concern that may be necessary. I dont know right now if that is necessary. But year 100 right, you saw it in the foreign Relations Committee meeting the other day, republicans and democrats, and some wanted all soldiers out. I thought we should leave a stay behind force. But wherever you are on that issue, would you say this evacuation was an Epic Failure. It was all done poorly. The president promised everybody would be brought out. By the White Houses own statements over last month, there could be hundreds if not thousands of americans still trapped behind enemy lines. We have to get those people out. President biden promised the american People Everyone would come om out but yet we know theyre still on the Ground And Cant get them out. The White House said we pushed every lever we could, there are planes north of kabul in the airport and they said we cannot get movement. Her challenger is harriet hageman, has questioned, as many republicans have, the integrity of the 2020 election. You say youre neutral on this race. Are you neutral on Hagemans Refusal to accept the 2020 Election Results . Are you neutral on that or will you reject that. Number one as you know, President Biden is president. I voted to certify the election, period. Wyoming did our election right. We have mailin ballots, we also have voter i. D. In terms of this upcoming race, the republican primary voters are going to decide who we in wyoming want to have represent us in congress. And the primary, jim sc, is onl about a year away. We have the economy and in terms of covid and the Border Sand across the board, and my goal its to focus on future of the fights that we have with the administration. I get that. But the fact is to hope the primary will be put down a little bit i get that. But you know the fact is many republicans are not looking to the future. Theyre still looking to the past election. It is created this cancer that 78 of republicans dont believe that Joe Biden legitimately won. Will you as the number in this senate will you say we cannot stand this in party.
