Insurrectionists charged in the deadly January 6 capitol riot. And an increased Police Presence not the only detesrrent for chaos. They began installing fencing At The capitol square. Ramping up security at local airports. Its unclear how many people will actually attend this saturday. Amazing to see the need for all this eight months after January 6. Fortunately, both chambers of congress will actually be on recess this weekend, meaning this rally poses a smaller threat, at least to lawmakers and their staffs. The man behind this rally says, we wont see, he says, the violent spectacle thAt Took place on January 6th. Weve got a largely peaceful crowd. Weve had two events in washington, d. C. So far, At The Department Of Justice and At The prison. There have been no incidences so far. No one is bringing a weapon that will be a part of our crowd. We can assure you of that. Theyre coming out to support people who committed crimes. More than 500 participants in that rally. Authorities counter that narrative saying they do expect some protesters to be armed. Theyre going to be looking out for it, theyre prepared for t. Our team is on top of all the latest developments around washington. Lets begin with Cnn Law Enforcement correspondent Whitney Wild. Whitney, administration keeping details of Law Enforcement requests close to the chest. What do we know . Because one of the open questions here is how might the National Guard be used if necessary. Reporter right. And the Big Question, of course, is because that was such a debacle on January 6. Theres a Lot Of, a Lot Of pressure on Law Enforcement agencies and the d. O. D. To come up with the answer for how theyre going to deal with the possibility thAt There might be armed protesters because even though we know thAt The Rally Organizer says that people here will be peaceful, the intention is to be peaceful, we also know that Law Enforcement is working with intelligence to suggest there is a possibility that some of these protesters might be armed. They also know that because these events have the possibility of attracting farright extremists, its not unreasonable to think thAt There might be bouts of violence which is why, jim, we have this fence here now at constitution and delaware, northeast, in washington, d. C. This is the sad reality thAt This is a familiar sight because of January 6. Ill swing over here to the corner where there is also a security camera. As you point out, members of congress are not going to be here At The capitol, which is a real plus when youre trying to figure out if theres going to be another ramping up of violence here because, you know, it really mitigates the risk. However, Law Enforcement is not taking any chances. Capitol police is coordinating with the metropolitan Police Department who has already said weeks ago thAt They plan to be in full force. The Big Question remaining, though, is what is the National Guard poised to do. Our Alex Marquart pressed d. O. D. On that. Heres whAt They said. Can you say more broadly whether it is a Law Enforcement capability or in the past, for example, thein the past theyve been asked to do Traffic Control . Again, im not going to talk about the specifics of it. My understanding its not an exorbitant ask. Its not of a particularly large size or major capability. I think its really more in the form of some manpower support. Reporter jim, of course, the hope from the Rally Organizer as well as Law Enforcement is this rally will be peaceful. The Uscp Chief says if that happens and there are no problems, this fence will come down in pretty short order after the rally, jim. All right, Whitney Wild with the latest for us. Whitney, thank you. The Capitol Police not the only ones ramping up security. The head of the tsa says they will see more Security Officers and dogs than usual leading up to the event. That was the concern on January 6. Perhaps bringing in weapons. Pete Pete Muntean is at Regan National Airport this morning. Pete, im curious how concerned the tsa is here. How closely are they watching and what extra resources are they using . Reporter well, jim, the tsa says it is always on high alert. The extra officers and extra canines are in similar position they took after the original January 6 attack when it stepped up Security Screening here at Regan National Airport, also at dulles, also at bwi. The tsa says it is a period of high awareness and will continue to work with the a Law Enforcement partners in the district. The January 6 attack changed Aviation Security everywhere. It was then thAt The federal government adopted a zero Tolerance Approach against unruly passengers. That became a problem right after the 6th, and the agency says theres still about 4,000 cases of unruly passengers since the beginning of this year. The head of the Tsa David Pau Catas Pautasky and i, and he said it is a concern of the agency. It is a big concern of my, it is a big concern of every traveler. Nobody wants to be at 30,000plus feet and have somebody create and inflate disturbance. Reporter airlines say they are also looking At This. Remember, American Airlines moved its Flight Crews from downtown d. C. Hotels after the January 6th attack. It also suspended Alcohol Service on flights to and from d. C. , thats still a Policy Airline wide. American said it isnt changing anything yet, but it is monitoring this. Theyre taking it steeriously, both the private Sector And Law enforce. Pete Pete Muntean, good to have you. Congressmen are making their best effort to separate themselves from the rally and supporting the capitol insurrectionists. Cnns Melanie Zanona joins us. Are they supporting it . Reporter clearly there is concern in the gop about potential political Cal Fallout and how democrats might try to weaponize the rally against them. But At The same time, republicans are not condemning the rally or its cause either. In fact, there have been several members of congress who have actively expressed Support Or Sympathy for the jailed insurrectionists and there are some gop congressional candidates who are speaking on saturday. A sign thAt They view this as beneficial for their primary campaigns. All of it is putting gop leaders in a tough spot because on the one hand, they want to move on from January 6. They dont want to be seen as proinsurrectionists, yet At The same time their Basin Creasingly believes the big lie, increasingly believes the attack was just, and has been increasingly sympathetic towards the rioters. That being said, there are some members of the republican party who want gop leaders to speak out more. Take a List Tone what peter meijer, a House Republican who voted to impeach trump, had to say about the washington live event. We see what can be done when individuals feel theyre being nodded to. These are literally Life Or Death implications of some of these decisions and of these opinions, and leaders need to be clear where they stand, need to be clear whAt They believe. The man behind saturdays rightWing Rally down played concerns of potential violence, telling cnn it will feature a, quote, largely peaceful crowd. Cnn Justice Correspondent Jessica Snyder joins us now. Jessica, okay. He says it will be a largely peaceful crowd, but this is a crowd where Law Enforcement has concerns theyre bringing weapons. And, by the way, its a crowd supporting folks who have been charged with federal crimes here, right. Hundreds of them for the violence we saw January 6. What else did he tell you and is it credible . Reporter well, you know, jim, ive talked with him twice now in the past week, most recently yesterday. He does insist there will be no violence and hes blasting that message out to his supporters online and over twitter saying they should be respectful to Law Enforcement. The organizer of this rally is a former trump campaign staffer. He after 2016 founded a conservative group called look ahead america. He says hes organizing this event for one reason only. He wants to seek what he Terms Justice for the hundreds of people who are charged for the January 6th insurrection. Now, he stresses to me this is not a rally about the election, and he says extremists looking to cause any trouble arent welcome. But ive talked to Extremism Experts and they have actually looked at chatter online, and they say theyre not seeing much. It seems like many of the people who might cause trouble may, in fact, stay away. D. H. S. Says they are expecting a crowd of about 700. People watching the buzz online say there just doesnt seem to be much excitement for this rally. But nonetheless, Law Enforcement is prepared for this. I talked with Matt Brainard about why hes holding this rally. He said he wants the vast majority of charges brought against the rioters dropped. But he did peddle misinformation. Heres what he said. The vast majority of the nearly 600 people who have been arrested have not been charged with any violence. Theyve been charged with expressing their first amendment rights in the public building At The wrong place At The wrong time. This is a place they can walk today without incident. The fact they are being treated harshly and solitary confinement without access to medical Care Reporter so right there is when i interrupted braynard in the interview. Everyone has been charged for a reason. Either they illegally entered the capitol or committed violence, charges for conspiracy. And that last fact he tried to claim there, its just not true. There are a few dozen people held in jail right now. Those people were determined by a judge to be either a Flight Risk or they had previously committed crimes or theyre accused of committing a violent crime At The rally. So a Lot Of the premise of this rally on saturday is just false, but nonetheless, theyre moving forward with this rally. Theyre calling It Justice for jan 6. This organizer has written these letters, erica and jim, to the fbi, to d. O. J. , trying to get these charges dropped. But the fact is there is a premise for these charges. These people were At The capitol, illegally entered the capitol and many of them assaulted Law Enforcement. And, by the way, caught on video. Weve seen the video repeatedly. Current and former Defense Officials are now speaking out in support of the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of staff general mark milley. This follows new revelations in a book he single handedly took action in the waning days of the Trump Presidency to limit the former president from possibly ordering a Military Strike or launching nuclear weapons. Cnn senior Security Correspondent Alex Marquart has been following this from the pentagon. Alex, the key here is as this was initially reported, it was somehow portrayed as milley saying to china, if were going to attack you, im going to tell you first. Thats not what happened. He was concerned that china thought the u. S. Was going to attack them and was trying to pursue deescalation in the background. Is that right . Reporter what we have learned is there were concerns on the chinese side about whAt They were seeing here in the united states. So now this debate is heating up over whether milley crossed a line in the conversations with his chinese counterpart when he assured him everything was 100 stable in the u. S. , thAt The u. S. Would not carry out any sort of kinetic action against china and importantly as you mention, jim, if the u. S. Were to attack china, that milley would give his Counterpart A heads up. Some have accused milley of carrying out his own foreign policy. I think what is important to understand here is when milley made these calls, its not like hes doing it One On one by himself. The calls we are told by Defense Officials on October 30th and January 8th there were some 15 people who were also on them listening, including a representative of the state department. And after calls like this take place, you know, obviously notes are taken and then what are called read outs are then sent to other agencies and departments. And it wasnt milley alone who was reaching out to the chinese. It was also the secretary of Defense Mark Esper At The time. As i mentioned, there was this perception here in the pentagon thAt The chinese were unusually concerned about whAt They were seeing in terms of the rhetoric leading up to the election in november. And so esper ordered his top Defense Official, sorry, his top Policy Official to send a back Channel Message to the chinese as well to also reassure them. A senior, former senior Defense Official told our Colleague Katy Bo williams this was part of what he called a twostep process. Both the Secretary Of Defense and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs. It is standard practice when someone like milley, the chairman, would reach out to his counterpart, thAt The Secretary Of Defense would be kept abreast of these conversations. And, in fact, what Milleys Office is now trying to portray this as is standard practice. There has been no denial from the pentagon or from Milleys Office. I want to read you part of the statement that mill Weys Spokesman put out yesterday. This is colonel dave butler. He says, milleys calls with the chinese and others in october and january were in keeping with these duties and responsibilities, conveying reassurance in order to maintain strategic stability. All calls from the chairman to his counterparts, including those reported so in the book, are staffed and coordinated and communicated with the department of defense and the interagency. We should note, jim and erica, that milley will be facing questions on september 28th. Hes due to testify on Capitol Hill as you can imagine. As a result of these revelations in this new book, he will face quite a grilling. We should note it was not the only time that u. S. Officials back channelled their counterparts. We know with Iran And North korea, u. S. Diplomats also back channelled with concern that President Trump might stumble the country into war with those countries. Part of a pattern. Alex marquart, thanks very much. Well, the u. S. , United Kingdom and australia announced an hiss hotoric pact. They will acquire eight submarines and encountering china in the region. Cnn national Security Correspondent Kylie Atwood joins us from the state department. What is the response from the chinese government here . Reporter this is a hugely substantial new partnership. The u. S. , australia and the uk, the brits, are all coming together to work on essentially forward leaning efforts in the defense space. Artificial intelligence. These new submarines. At the center of all this as you guys noted, is an effort to help the australians get nuclearpowered submarines. That is going to happen over the next 18 months here. This isnt just some idea theyve come up with. They actually have a plan for implementation. The reason thAt Those nuclear powered submarines are so significant is, number one, the technology that goes into building them. Theres only a handful of countries globally that even have thAt Technology. The fact thAt The u. S. Who has these nuclear powered submarines is sharing that with australia demonstrates just how close the alliance is. It is extremely sensitive. The second part is thAt These submarines are much more stealth. They can move much more quickly. They dont have to come up to get gas as frequently as the conventional submarines do. So they are really powerful tool in the military space. And, of course, these are going to be in chinas backyard. You know that australia is in the same region, the indopacific, and so, therefore, that is why china, of course, feels threatened by this. So, important information because this is a big new question. Booster shots, there are new details this morning on Covid19 Vaccine boosters. Three separate reports support the need for a third dose for the Pfizer Vaccine. Those reports suggest the extra shots would be safe. All this as Fda Vaccine advisers are set to meet tomorrow when theyll consider Pfizers Request to approve a third shot. Cnn Health Reporter Jacqueline Howard is following all of these developments, and there are a Lot Of them this week, i have to say. So, jacqueline, this fda advisers meeting, they meet tomorrow. There could be a decision tomorrow afternoon. The White House has said boosters could start rolling out as early as next week. They gave that monday date. The question is are states ready At This point if, in fact, they get the go ahead . Reporter well, erica, i can tell you states are getting ready. I spoke with the national association of County And City health officials, and the head of the Group Rory Tremel freeman said they plan to be ready. We have been hearing from local Health Departments without information coming their way, they are beginning to assess who on the ground will have the capacity to do boosters, who will remain as a provider of vaccines, and who is pulling out. Now, whAt This means, Health Departments are getting potential sites in place to administer boosters. This could look different state by state. Could be pharmacies leading the way in some states, hospitals, doctors offices in others. Overall, while we wait to hear what comes out of tomorrows meeting, states are getting plans together. Okay. So, this comes on the heels of moderna as well saying theyre developing a new booster to fight, in particular, covid19 variants. What do we know and how quickly does that move . Reporter yeah, jim, earlier this month, Moderna Submitted Data to the fda and the latest data weve seen regarding modernas booster, this is a small study, including 80 volunteers, and moderna looked at Antibody Levels in volunteers who were fully vaccinated. Six months later they received a Booster And Moderna looked At The Antibody Levels again. According to this data, again, its coming from moderna, but they say thAt Their Booster Dose was able to boost the Antibody Levels, so to speak, to be equivalent to what was seen just a couple weeks after getting fully vaccinated. Thats what weve been hearing. But if you look at how vaccines were initially rolled out back in december, pfizer came first, and then moderna, right. So we can anticipate that will be similar when it comes to boosters if we do get boosters. Pfizer, then moderna. And its a good reminder, too, all of this has been a work in progress from the beginning. Were sort of learning as were going here, including with the time lines. One of the things i found interesting is you make the case, too, that not just for the added protection, but for the new information, the new data that widely available Booster Shots could offer. What specifically do you think we could learn from that if more people were able to get the shot and do so fairly quickly . Well, im looking forward to seeing the data that are going to be presented At The Fda Meeting Tomorrow because based on what im seeing, i think there is actually a pretty straightforward case to be made for why we should be allowing Booster Shots At This time, especially for older individuals and people who are more medically vulnerable. There was one of the studies that was published yesterday, for example, that found getting a third dose of the Pfizer Vaccine reduces the symptomatic infection 11 times and reduces the chance of severe infection more than 19 times. Some people are going to look At Those data and say, hey, i am pretty well detected as i am with the two doses of vaccine, so i dont want a booster. Somebody else is going to say, if a booster can give me that much additional protection, why wouldnt i want to get it, especially if im older and something thats a mild infection for some people could actually put them over the edge. We also know based on another large study done having boosters reduces your chance of having or rather, being vaccinated reduces your chance of having longterm Side Effects later on and longterm covid. I would really rather the fda give people the opportunity to make a decision with their physician about getting a Booster Dose. So, dr. Wen, you have a school of thought here who says, yeah, the boosters may have benefit particularly for some people, aboutbut we really have focus on the unvaccinated first. We have some rejecting the shot and thats causing a whole host of problems. Should we continue to work on the holdouts while Offering Boosters to those who want or need them . Absolutely. This is not a zerosum game. We dont have some finite limit of vaccines in the u. S. Other countries, yes, there is a big problem. But here in the u. S. Were not talking about giving vaccines that otherwise would go to somebody who is unvaccinated and giving a third dose to others. In fact, we know there are millions of doses that are expiring right now. We also know thAt There are many americans who are already taking thAt Third unauthorized booster. Im arguing instead of making them go through different hoops and lying potentially to say maybe this is their first dose when actually its not, i would rather we give them a legal way of getting the vaccine and then collecting data. Because thats one of the issues with the u. S. , that other countries like israel and the uk and germany have been so far ahead of us on data collection, we know more than A Million people have gotten the unauthorized third dose here in the u. S. Lets find out more information on this group. Speaking of data and information, you just mentioned the longterm covid. A Lot Of questions about that. The u. S. Is launching a study now into longterm covid. What do you anticipate theyll find . What are some of your questions there . Yeah, im really glad thAt The n. I. H. , The National Institutes Of Health is launching this study. There is a lot about long Haul Covid we dont really know. We dont agree on the definition. Is it any types of lingering symptoms after a certain period of time, or is there something about coronavirus thats really different and is affecting, for example, the neurological system and causing this Brain Fog or difficulty concentrating thats different from other illnesses . So i think there are a Lot Of questions, in particular, about treatment. There are people who have only had mild illness, but still have persistent shortness of Breath Or Difficulty concentrating even months after their initial diagnosis. Today a prominent South Carolina Attorney is set to turn himself into the police after police say he admitted to ordering a hit on himself. Alex murdocks attorneys say that shooting, which he survived, was a scheme to leave behind a 10 Million Life Insurance Policy for his surviving son. His Wife Maggie and other son paul were murdered back in june. No one has been arrested in that case. I mean, the story gets even more alarming. Now cnn is learning south Carolina Police are also investigating the 2018 death of a housekeeper who worked for the Murdock Family pictured there and who died after an alleged Trip And Fall accident At Their home. No autopsy was done At The time. Cnn correspondent martin savage, hes been covering the story. Hes live in varnville, south carolina. Tell us what we know about the investigation and the death of the housekeeper. This is yet another layer here. Reporter it is another layer and, unfortunately, another tragic layer. Were talking about Gloria Sater Field who, by all accounts was a beloved housekeeper for the Murdock Family for about 20 years. But as you say, in 2018 on the Murdock Family property, she suffered a Trip And Fall. Thats the way it was described. Tragically, she died as a result of that incident. The murdocks allegedly told her Family Members, her sons that, yeah, the family probably is responsible and they should file a lawsuit. So they did. Alex murdock allegedly steered them to an attorney, apparently they were unaware thAt That attorney was Alex Murdocks Best Friend and also the godfather of one of his children. So, one of the reasons this is being investigated by State Authorities is thats highly unethical. And any sort of financial settlement that was reached, which there was, 500,000, could have been looked upon as perhaps skewed in favor of the Murdock Family. And that said, the surviving sons of satterfield say they havent received a dime despite the fact this was settled sometime ago. This raises another question thats been heard a lot in this case with alex murdock, where did the money go . So thats why youve got these kind of two things in the same death that are being investigated. As you pointed out, the Hampton County Coroner is saying, hold on a minute. There was no autopsy.
