They call out the fbi in failure of Invets Stigating abuse. To be clear, i blame Larry Nassar and i also blame an entire system that enabled and perpetrated his abuse. Today i ask you all to hear my voice. I ask you, please, do all in your power to ensure these individuals are held responsible and accountable for ignoring my initial report. For lying about any initial report and covering up for a child molesters. This conduct by these Fbi Agents, including the Special Agent in charge who are held in high regard and expected to protect the public is unacceptable, disgusting and shameful. If we dont do all we can to get these fact, the problems we are here to address will persist and we are deluding ourselves if we think other children can be spared this Constinstitutionali Tolerance and abuse that i and so many others had to espendure. Those were some of our most recognizable and beloved gymnasts. Larry nassar is in prison for life after 150 Young Women and girls testified in court to be sexually abused over the past two decades under the guise of medical treatment. The Justice Department found that fbi officials who were allegedly investigating these accusations violated the Agency Policy by making false statement and failing to properly document the womens complaints. Just days ago, the fbi fired one of the agents at the center of the failures. Lets talk now to one of the gymnasts in attendance. She gave emotional testimony after the press conference. Jessica howard, its wonderful to see you. Thank you very much for being here. Of course. Thank you. I know this has been a really emotional morning for you and for you ever won involved. What was it like for you to sit there in the hear room and listen to the stories of your fellow athletes . You think youre prepared for whatever might come. That is just not truth. Thats not how this works anymore. To be so heartened by the senators word, all of them. This bipartisan clarify is really something that is moving to hear and to see. To hear my Usa Team teammates, i was visibly emotional and broken up in the back. It was very hard to maintain myself but i think today is a wonderful example of how amazing the senate has done. I would really like to see some now. We did see how emotional you were. I think at one point you had to leave the room. What was the hardest to hear . I dont know if anything specific is the hardest. The hardest thing to me now is that 120 new victims were trafficked, handed, however you want to say it to Larry Nassar on his table while these men knew that was happening and they were discussing how to promote themselves and theres just no more basic level of Corruption And Thinking of the new victims, im sitting by kayle and you could feel how much could have been avoided. Yeah. Its so sickening for all of us to hear and in fact, the current director of the fbi Chris Wrey said he was heartsick. Thats his quote by all he heard today. It sounds like from what you said and what your fellow gymnasts have said, youve lost faith in the fbi doing anything right here. Well, look, i get the game at this point. Its been five years now and people are heartsick. I do believe that. I do plbelieve our stories affe them and they can feel very deeply what it would be like to be in this position, but what has not happened is not any active follow through. To hear another massively Power V Individual to say were going to set up how many policies, procedures and rules when this doesnt happen again when the very simple truth if one person had picked up the phone, one person filed a report and stayed on it in the face of such glaring violence, at least 120 women have been saved. Not women, children. Thats up with of the most devastating parts of this. Makayla gave her testimony to the fbi. That was 2015 and then there were more than 100 victims after that. I wish i would say her experience was completely individual. I dont know if any of victims that came forward early on that we not diminished. That were not told flat out that it wasnt enough what happened to them. What she said and what they felt has been so keenly felt by so many of us that its really hard to put sinto words at this poin. Like we were told we dont matter. Were told were worthless and tell somebody about this abuse, the federal bureau of investigation to the highest level of Law Enforcement and youre still dismissed and nothing happens. Theres no answer. Its the deepest level of corruption i can really think of when youre talking about the sexual abuse of children and the effects it has on the rest of their lives. Yeah. The last time i talked to you, you described it as a dormant volcano you all have been carrying around and stuffing down. In terms of what happens next, where was the doj. They were called a No Show today. Were you expecting the Department Of Justice to be there today. When you start talking about expectations because ive expected a lot of things. I didnt realize i was expecting a lot of things. To say i expected them to show up is a given. They were hiding behind whatever rule. It feels to me that they are saying sexual abuse of children is not an important matter to us. We will not act and push this aside until the media blows over and well see if were going to prosecute. They have evidence. They have witnesses, victims. They have every possible thing they need to prosecute individuals that made this possible and wed like to see that done. The Justice Department not being there today shows us thats out of the question. Who do you want them to prosecute in. Everybody in the report, for starters. Some people were kept on the payroll until the story came out yesterday that this was happening and they were fired. I would like to see the people that were connected, the people that knew what the guys were doing. There are emails, chains of command and you cannot tell me that other people in fbi offices, u. S. Gymnastics. I want to see the net cast wider. Its clearly not one bad apple. Now they try to use the same argument for all these different institutions and like the whole world is bad apples then what are we supposed to do when were abused and crimes are committed against our person and our body. Yeah. Jessica, it sounds like the senator who is were standing Side By side with you Today Plan not to let this go, plan to do something. I know you said this is first day that you plooef something would change. We are hoping that is true. Well continue to follow your story. You have proven youre not just elite athletes, youre elite human beings. Thank you very much for talking with us. Thank you very much. Thank you for having me. Cnn legal analyst is a civil rights attorney. Just heartbreaking to listen to all this again. These brave young woman at the time, they were little girls. They had the courage to come forward and tell the story of this horrific sexual abuse by this doctor and to have Fbi Agents who were entrusted to take this information, investigate and prosecute this predator to dismiss the information, to minimize the information the out right lie to make false statements in reports and for that to come out because of this inspector generals report. I think jessica is right. We saw the fire of up with of Fbi Agents just crecently. We didnt see this happen in a timely matter. It seems like it was a Cover Up in the fbi. Justice for those little girls who had their childhood denied because of the Predator Conduct of Larry Nassar. Mark, im really glad youre with us because you know the scope and the breadth of this story. I want to pull one of the threads that Jessica Left for us there. This bad apple theory. He focused on specific agents but she says its not just a few bad apples. What your reporting tell you about the breadth of this. Is this structural. Is this cultural . Let me go back for a second, if i may. Jessica howard is one of first gymnasts to come forward. I think she was the third. She left me a voice message. She was nervous. Shes especially a hero on that front. In terms of whats going on at the fbi, i cant assess how many bad apples or good apples are over there, but what i see is five years after our first story. Five years when rachel came forward to talk about having been abused by Larry Nassar. Ive years after that, we have this. Were trying to sort out the failures of the fbi. Not only that, michigan State University still isnt releasing, i think its 6,000 documents from its internal investigation. These survivors not only get to the point where nassar is in jail for the rest of his life but they still have to fight. F its shameful. Its not just Larry Nassar. Its all, including the Fbi Agents. We know the supervisory agent in charge in the indianapolis office. Why isnt the doj doing something . I dont understand why People Cant Answer that. Do these women need the Department Of Justice in order to have criminal complaints against all the people who knew . I would hope the State District attorneys that can look at the alleges. The case has opinion made. The evidence is there. The witnesses have come forward. Theres mounds and mounds of documentary evidence. Even though the doj does not appear to be acting and hopefully they are doing Something Pe Hiebehind the scen they are not leaving the public that they are protecting the rights of the girls. They will step up and come forward and give the girls the justice they deserve. Mark, there was a degree of confidence put into State Sport by some of the senators. As we heard from the athletes, Aly Raisman was trying to be diplomatic, she doesnt plobeli that will do much and have not done much in the past few years. Should there be confidence in this agency . Well, Safe Sport has not enjoyed the confidence of ath athletes for years. Were five years into this and it still hasnt been cleaned up. Thats really disappointing. Just remarkable. You realize how many people came forward to tell the same story and only larry is in jail. Lets go to John Kirby talking about General Milley. The secretary makes calls. These are important communications. They dont just pick up the phone to talk about sports. They talk to iron out issues. Thats very typical. The chairman usually coordinates with the White House especially if its on certain topics. In a typical call with a nation like china, that would be a fully coordinating conversation and the sharing of information after the fact. The White House basically, former President Trump would know about the communication before taking place and know what happened. For him to say if the allegations made in the book were true then the chairman should be put on trial for treason. Sd s oh, my goodness. These not my words. I cant speak to processes before this administration took office. As much as i know youd like me to, i just cant do that. What im telling you is typically, that when the chairman or the secretary interact with Counter Part. Its a function of the job. They have to do that. Ones that are of consequence and they almost all, they are fully coordinated. I Cant Spieak to processes previous to January 20th of this year. Let me get to the phones. I havent done that yet. Thank you. I know the biden administration aspires to be as transparent as possible. Would it be possible to get a transcript of the conversation with his chinese counterpart noting the prooevious administration released a transcript. Im hoping this administration can be just as transparent. Im not going to sign us up to releasing transcripts of conversations that occurred before we took office. I cant do that. Id refer you to the Chairmans Office if you want more context on that. Were not in a position to do that. Also can you address a little bit about the evolution of the Partnership And Training and fighting together . Its been a long history we had with australia. You know that. In the are john and elsewhere all a around the world. Its a close relationship. The secretarys committed as we made clear today to improving and strengthening that relationship going forward. Is china prompting, strengthing of that relationship . I think without questioning the kinds of aggressive activities that were seeing out of china and the indopacific region is causing all of us, the international community, not just the united states to make sure were focussed appropriately on that behavior and on making sure, as i mention in my Opening Statement that we are all not only committed but helping to further what we call a free and open indopacific. Defense minister said the situation in indopacific was deter deteriorating. Does u. S. Dod agree with that . We share the concerns that the minister has. We have been listening to Pentagon Spokesperson John Kirby. Hes talking about the bombshell and the new book that we got excerpts of from. Its written by bob woodward. Its called peril and what was happening in the final days of the White House. What caused Mark Milley and other top officials to take extraordinary actions. Joining us now to talk about this is olivia troy. Theres been 1078 right Wing Or Republican Talking Points that he should resign immediately because he was basically acting outside of his purview as the joint chiefs chairman. We heard from other people, generals and Military Analysts who say this is exactly what the Job Description is. If you think you need to put up guardrails because theres a president who is mentally unstable. Correct. Let me just say, first of all about the book, context is key. I think that some people have put out statements against General Milley before they read the book and the context. That said, what were seeing now is support for General Milley. His spokesman just came out. We just heard from John Kirby but also his spokesman came out a little bit earlier and he put in context exactly what Chairman Milley was doing. It is not unusual for generals to communicate with each other. He went on the say the meeting regarding nuclear Weapons Protocol was to remind uniform leaders in the pentagon of the long established and robust procedures in light of reporting on the subject. I would say the reporting is about Nancy Pelosis Call to him on the 8th where she said she was concerned about nuclear weapons. He goes onto say General Milley continues to act within his authority in the lawful Pr Tradition of civilian control and is owed to the constitution. Translation, what im told is that according to the book, china was on the edge. China was rattled. General milley had seen sensitive intelligence as woodward reports that china thought we were going to strike them. This is four days before the election. General milley calls to calm down his Counter Part and say thats not going happen. Phone Call Number two, its two days after june 6th. Again, he knows that china is rattled and woodward book hes quoted as saying that half the world was nervous. He calls to make sure his Counter Part knows he can be res reassured theyre not going to do a strike. My sources tell me this is within and we have had our own generals on that this is standards procedure. General milley was so worried about trumps stability, impulsivity and they thought that trump was in serious mental decline and he was trying to over throw the election. When you read the book, you see, there is no evidence that milley over steps his authority. He goes, he calls in the guys in the War Room and he says, we need youve got to follow the process and the procedure. He is quoted in the book as saying, im part of the procedure, but lets remember even though she not technically in the chain of command, the chairman of the joint chiefs is the most senior military Officer And Adviser to the president. He would normally just because of his job know whats going on and be weighing in. Contact is key. She is the only one of the four of us who has read the book. Lets highlight that first. Also Colonel Vinman who has broken away from the previous administration. He testified during the first impeachment who said she should resign. What do you make of the generals actions considering you were concerned during that period between the election and the inauguration . I was watching an unhinged man sitting in the oval office. I know what Donald Trump is capable of. We have come close to war several times in the past. I have witnessed some of these conversations and have had these conversations with some of these leaders who have had to stand strong. When i see this with General Milley, i think the calls by some of the republican lawmakers are absurd. All right. Were having a bit of an Audio Issue with olivia there. Hopefully we can fix that. If we still have jamie, i want to come back to you. You know what interesting element i find is the difference between this time and the last time you were on with reporting from theese books about the Trup Administration and actions and statements by General Milley, they didnt explicitly address them the last time around. Sgr Donald Trump went out and did an interview. This is classic Donald Trump. He criticized milley. Said it was treasonous and i think what were seeing here is something we watch with Donald Trump for four years, which is when he is being attacked, when he doesnt like the narrative, he wants to turn it around on Someone Else. I think what were seeing is the book came out, we started describing the attacks on him. What top officials, not just General Milley was saying about that this is Donald Trump trying to turn the tables on General Milley. Let me give you a couple of quotes from the book of people other than General Milley. Gina haspel said this is dangerous. Are we going to lash out for his ego . This was over a meeting about iran. She also said are we on our way to a right Wing Coup after the election. Mike pompeo who is seen as very loyal to Donald Trump, then secretary of state says, hes in a dark place. According to a top national Security Official that i spoke to, this official said milley did not go rogue as far as china is concerned or going into the War Room. Whats really happened here is trump went rogue when he tried to over turn the election. Jamie, im so glad that you brought that up. I know we all sort of dance around the issue of, you know, whatever mental deterioration were seeing because fnone of u are licensed therapists so its delicate to talk about. The unnerving part of this whole story is so many of the top officials thought that something was so wrong with President Trump that they had to go to these extraordinary measures. The people who had known Donald Trump the longest and the berst his niece, his Ghost Writer have talked about this kind of Personality Disorder that does not allow for loss and that he would become unhinged if he were to lose. Your Reporting Dove tails with that. Think about the words we heard from top White House officials, erratic, unhinged, unstable, crazy town. I spoke to a senior republican official who said to me, No One should be criticizing milley. They all knew trump was bonkers. Thats a quote. What milley did was stood up and took precautions to make sure nothing dangerous or illegal happen. The people who were around him, who were seeing him every day after the election, particularly but in the book it details really the last year of trump. Saw behavior they thought was explosive and dangerous. Jamie, thank you for all the reporting. Our thanks to olivia troy. Now to President Trumps Election Loss and the blizzard of lies hes told about it to continue that continue to poison the country. Its opinion more than 300 days since Donald Trump lost the presidency and a just released poll found that most americans believe that democracy is under attack as a result of whats happened since. The poll finds that much of the fear about democracy comes from republicans who still support trump. The poll also saw more than three out of Foir Repur Republi who still do not believe that Joe Biden won the election. We have the full details of the poll. David, walk us through numbers. This is pretty troubling information. Its pretty broad bipartisan agreement that democracy is under attack. Youre right note its 75 of republicans say that. We have to think about republicans in a couple different categories. You look at the republicans who say that Donald Trump should leave the party. Nearly eight in ten. 79 say democracy is under attack but even the nontrump wing of the party, 51 , a slim majority say democracy is under attack. This is one of the most concerning numbers in the poll. We asked folks, do you think its likely that an Elections Official will over turn the results of a future election simply because their party lost . 51 of americans think thats rightfully. Thats the complete undermining of the democracy. You can see it by party. 49 of democrats think its likely that an election could be over turned. 48 of independents and republicans are saying many of this stuff. This is now part of the gospel of the republican party. Did Joe Biden win enough votes for the presidency. 78 of republicans say no. 78 of republicans say no. Thats because Donald Trump keeps telling that big lie. When you look at this even further, 54 of those republicans that say no, say theres solid evidence that Joe Biden is not legitimately win the election. When you and i know theres no evidence thats the Case But 54 of those republicans that say he didnt win, they say Theres Evidence he didnt win. A damning Wall Street Journal report finds that facebooks own researchers have repeatedly warned that instagram is toxic for teenage girls. One piece of this research reads, quote, we make Body Image issues worse for one in three teen girls. Another portion reads, quote, teens blame instagram for increases in the rate of anxiety and depression. This reaction was unprompted and consistent across all groups. With us now is clinical Psychologist Dr. Lisa stroman. Thank you for being with us. And i know this focuses on young girls. But i can only imagine, if i had instagram as a 12yearold Boy what i would feel at that age as well. This causes real damage to mental Health And Body image. Explain what this report is showing us. Well, the report actually shows that theyre complicit in understanding and knowing that their platform is creating a mental Health Crisis among our youth, and yet they continue accelerate and they continue to add more and more ad dollars in order to get more kids on this platform. It doesnt matter that their Casualty Rate of 32 of kids, they looked at that as a success that 68 of their users were having fun on the platform. They really have to look at whether or not theyre looking in the weeds as i work as a clinical psychologist with kids that are selfharming and cutting and talking about suicide. So, to me it looks like a bad Pr Moment for facebook, and definitely the curtains have come off on whats going on behind closed doors. This reminds me so much of the Tobacco Companies. The Tobacco Companies who knew for years the harm they were doing to americans health. Yet, they testified in front of congress that it wasnt the case. And here is Mark Zuckerberg when he testified on March 25th in front of congress. The research that weve seen is that using social apps to connect with other people can have positive Mental Health benefits and wellbeing benefits like helping people feel more connected and less lonely. It can have positive Mental Health benefits, but their research shows for teenage girls it doesnt. Its something that he knows. And, in fact, when he testified in congress, i spent the entire time looking at all of that footage. And the smirk and the smug look on his Face Understanding that he was able to essentially dupe congressional leaders to think that what he was doing is okay and not get anything in his platform looked at in a deeper dive and hide this information from The American public where parents are losing children and parents are suffering through how do we help our children get through just Daytoday Existence without having mental Health Crisis. And hes over there fueling the fire in that arena. And to me its criminal. So, when instagram says, and we should say that facebook bought instagram nine years ago or so. Says that its looking for new ways now to discourage users from focusing on their physical appearance. How much credence do you give that claim that theyre looking into ways to stop that . You know, it seems to me if you look at the report, they talk about doing these nudges and that theyre trying to figure out a way to manage this algorithm that theyve created. I did a Ted Talk and talked about this manage algorithm. Theyve lost control of it. And so when theyre doing these nudges to get people and kids into other areas, what youre telling me is that we should now turn around and trust where theyre nudging these children to go when in fact they dont care that 32 of them are in a mental Health Crisis. So, it concerns me that were not looking at what the statistics are showing and what it is and who it is thats controlling where these kids look. You know, i just want to read one more portion from the report. This one is about not logging off. So its about not logging off. It says instagrams researchers noted that those struggling with the platforms psychological effects werent necessarily logging off. Teens regularly reported wanting to spend less time on instagram. The presentation notes. But lacked the selfcontrol to do so. Its an addiction. I see it with my own teenagers. Its an addiction. We cant expect 14 and 15yearold girls to know how to selfregulate when you keep you know, its feeding your kind of endorphins in a certain way to keep seeing all these images. And, again, the fact that Instagram And Facebook have known this for years. Not only have they known this, theyve used, like you mentioned, the Tobacco Playbook in order to get the addiction. They have that Dopamine Reward System totally honed in for these kids with an undeveloped frontal lobe, they have no chance to get off of it in a way, particularly when they present the data and the way that theyre presenting it. All right, dr. Lisa strohman, thank you so much for being with us. Again, i can only imagine if i had Social Media as a teenager all of us. How i would feel and the impact that would have on me.
