Im humbled and grateful to the millions and millions of californians that exercised their Fumts Andamental right to and expressed themselves so overwhelmingly by rejecting the division. And cnns Dan Merica is live at Gavin Newsom headquarters in sacramento. What is the plan ahead given of course this Strength Ens of han of Governor Newsom. Reporter i think the next step is getting right back to work. He told Reporters Today that that is his plan, to get right back to work, to start working signing bills, things that have really been on the Back Burner for the last few weeks as he has campaigned against this recall. You are also going to see him having to start run for reelection again. This recall was called in an off month, off year time. He is now up for reelection in 2022. So he will have to turn around and run once again to keep his job for a second term. The I Implications nationally a a little more complicated. This is a huge win. This will be pointed to from job to governors of democratic states, even to some House And Senate members who have pushed their states to do more on covid19, this will be pointed to as a Proof Point if you will as good politics can come from fighting the covid19. And trying to end this pandemic. That is what Governor Newsom ran on and his opponent Larry Elder really ran against what Governor Newsom had done on covid. The other aspect here is Donald Trump is still a factor in american politics. He is not on the ballot here, but Governor Newsom made this race a lot about Donald Trump. He compared Larry Elder to Donald Trump. He talked about the nationalization of this race, what it would mean to have a republican leading a state like california. And that really proves a point to democrats that you can talk about Donald Trump, you can talk about trumpism in the United States, and have it be an effective message both for democrats and independents. This was not a close race. There were some polls that showed that it would be close over the summer, that began to widen as people began to focus on this race. And what we saw tonight is that Governor Newsom won a resounding victory here in california. Yeah, he did. Dan merica, many thanks. Republican Larry Elder made claims of Election Fraud in the waning days of the race. Well before the votes were even counted. But he ultimately admitted defeat Tuesday Night in front of his supporters. Lucy kafanov is at elder campaign headquarters. Reporter it has been an interesting evening. The campaign has billed this event as a, quote, victory party, all night the band had been playing, alcohol was flowing. The mood was celebratory up until the networks began calling the election for current governor Gavin Newsom. The Big Question of course was whether Larry Elder was going to concede the election or continue to make baseless claims of possible Election Fraud. He has mentioned Quote Unquote Election shenanigans in the leadup to the election. But he did come out speaking to his supporters acknowledging the loss. Take a listen. It is a remarkable moment in our nations history. Yeah. And newsom also talked about how fragile democracy was and that is what weve all been witnessing. So does the state of california need to reassess whether less than 2 Million disgruntled voters get to mount a Recall Vote in the state especially when the governor previously won by a landslide . You know, that is a really good question and that is something that California Lawmakers are planning on tackling. There are two lawmakers that plan on holding a Press Conference on Wednesday Morning to discuss just that. So that has got the attention of the lenlggislature and definite something people are talking about. I think going forward you are going to see some energy behind this idea to reform the recall. So do you sense that there is an almighty sigh of relief across the state of california . You know, it was a contentious election at times and people were passionate on both sides. I think that newsom generated a lot of Voter Anger with some of the missteps that he made. Obviously his dinner at the french laundry didnt do him any favors. But i do think that with this done, people can kind of take a breath, but not too much of a breath because we still have a Midterm Election coming up next year. And you think this has humbled newsom somewhat . I cant say. Just to set the stage, it is january 8, two days after the assault on the capitol, and Woodward And Costa reveal that milley is deeply shaken by the attack and he believes that President Trump has become increasingly unstable since his Election Loss according to the book. Woodward and costa write that milley was very concerned and was taking precautions that there were no dangerous or illegal orders. The book then goes on to say that it is true that milley may be criticized for what some may think was overstepping his authority, but Woodward And Costa write that his actions he believed were a good faith precaution. One of the other things that is revealed in the book is there are new details about January 6 and what President Trump is doing during the insurrection. And there is a remarkable scene in the book where retired general keith kellogg, who is Vice President pences national Security Adviser at the time, is in the Oval Office watching as President Trump is watching television, watching the insurrection in action. And according to the book, retired general kellogg says to the president , quote, mr. President , you really should do a tweet, is this is out of cont, they are not going to be able to control this, sir, they are not prepared for it, once a mob starts turning like that, youve lost it. Well start with North Korea, South Koreans saying that they did fire what they believe are two short range ballistic missiles around about lunchtime local time falling into the waters off the east coast. Now, these unlike the ones that North Korea said they fired on the weekend, the long Range Cruise missiles, the ones from today do violate the united Nations Security Council resolutions. But what weve also seen on the southern side of course from South Korea with President Moon Jaein in attendance as well is South Korea launching successfully they say a submarine launched ballistic missile saying that it successfully hit its target. Were expecting to see some images of that shortly this wednesday. Now, they have also said that they have other Weapon Systems that were successfully tested. What were hearing from some experts is that this appears to be an effort by South Korea to sort of pull away from relying on the United States to heavily build up their own defense capabilities. Weve seen the Defense Budget be significant in recent years. So what were seeing is really dual missile launches on both sides. As i say about 12 30 was the first North Korea missile, just a few hours later we saw the submarine launched ballistic missile from South Korea. Clearly those two missiles will have very differing impacts on the region and reactions from the international community. The North Korean missiles for Example Japan has said through its Prime Minister that they are outraged with this launch. About twothirds of voters rejected the republicanled effort to remove newsom there office. His most prominent challenger, conservative Talk Radio Host Larry Elder has conceded the race. The vote reaffirmed the power Democrats Wield in california according to Cnns Exit polls. Democrats outnumber republicans in the state and they voted along broader political lines to save newsom in tuesdays race. So lets bring in cnn senior political Writer And Analyst harry enten. Of course you can say i told you so. Earlier in the week you said youd be very surprised if voters decided to recall Governor Newsom so clearly you are not shocked by the outcome. But what do you say to those watching who perhaps are surprised . The look is california is a very blue state, right . Joe biden won it by 29 points. Second, it is very difficult to recall a governor whose Approval Rating is over 50 . The last time california held a Recall Election back in 2003, Governor Davis was south of 30 . Right now newsom is north of 50 . But more than that, we think about the issues. Coronavirus was the Number One issue according to the Exit Polls and the folks who said that the coronavirus was Number One issue voted overwhelmingly for Gavin Newsom. So Larry Elder tried to fight it against newsom, it didnt work and therefore the Result Newsom keeps his job. And what message does this send Larry Elder and of course Donald Trump and do you think some republican governors would be looking to california thinking maybe im reading the Room Wrong here . Yeah, i mean, look, Larry Elders Favorability Rating in the Exit Poll was 34 . That is not particularly good. And Larry Elder was as you mentioned a conservative Talk Show Host who was backed by Donald Trump. Donald trump as i mentioned lost the state of california by 29 points just a year ago. So i think the message here is two fold. Number one, you Cant Run trumplikes in Deep Blue states and expect to win. Second thing ill point out on the coronavirus, Larry Elder ran very strong against the Mask Mandate and the fact is for kids in school, 69 or 70 of voters supported that. And so i think as you sort of transform that across different state lines, to me a big sort of takeaway here is that if you are going to run on the coronavirus as a republican, do not run against the Mask Mandates. They are quite popular. So you do see that there is national implications here, it is not just specific to this being this Big Blue State . I mean, look, california is very blue, right . So i dont think the fact that depending where the no on the recall ends up, if it is 25, 30 points, i wouldnt necessarily read too much into that. But the fact is that the coronavirus was such a large issue in this campaign and if you just looked and pore over the data and you see as i mentioned that 70 of the california Recall Voters said that they assumed Mask Mandates in school. And then you team that up with the national poll data that we see that voters across the nation support Mask Mandates in schools, inrepublicans are fooling themselves if they say that my voters hate the Mask Mandates so lifetherefore I Sho hate it. No, but the center of the electorate do like Mask Mandates in school and i expect that democrats will be running on that issue the rest of this year and heading into the midterms in 2022. Militarys final Drone Strike on a car in kabul, afghanistan just hours before u. S. Troops were withdrawn. The u. S. Military claims they hit a legitimate terrorist target, but Cnns Investigation raises some very serious questions about the u. S. Governments accounts of what happened that day. And we want to warn viewers, this report contains scenes that are graphic and may be hard to watch. Cnns Anna Coren has been working this story and is joining us now live from hong kong. So anna, what all did you find here . Reporter well, rosemary, there are serious doubts as to whether the u. S. Military actually hit an Isisk Target possibly killing ten innocent civilians. As you say, this has been a two Week Investigation for our team here at cnn. And what we have found paints a very different picture. Take a look. Screams of horror. As residents desperately try in vein to distinguish the fireball called by an Air Strike. He says i did not know the attack was only on our house. The target, a white sedan under u. S. Military surveillance for the past eight hours. According to a u. S. Official with knowledge of the operation. It had just driven in to the residential compound with father of seven and Ngo Worker behind the wheel. I saw my father living in the car, there was shrapnel in his chest, throat, everywhere, blood was flowing through his ears. But the strike didnt just take out the 43yearold father. According to the family, two other men were also killed along with seven children, three of whom were toddlers. Our children were in such a state that we tried to identify them from their hands, ears or nose, says his cousin. None had their hands and feet intact, they were all in pieces. Charred body parts, pieces of skull with chunks of hair, and a foot melted into a sandal were among the remains taken to the morgue. And the 2yearold Nephew lies on a Xwur Gurney as a relative y strokes his face. Ten coffins filled with only partial remains, the names written in black marker. Very had very good intelligence. Just day before a Suicide Bomber had blown himself up at abbey gate. But for the past two weeks, cnn has been investigating the u. S. Militarys claims about the Drone Strike. Interviewing more than two dozen people, Family Members, neighbors, N Ggo Staff and mug multiple obBomb Experts. And weve been given access to the cctv hard Drive And Reyviewd all the footage. For 15 years, this Technical Engineer worked for nutritional educational, a u. S. Based ngo that introduced soybeans to afghanistan in 2003 to help feed the poor and reduce malnutrition. He is always caring for the people who are in need. And he has a compassionate heart. Reporter the organizes founder says that the corolla belonged to the ngo and he was responsible for distributing soybeans to afghans in Refugee Camps and running operations. U. S. Military officials have told cnn they had been monitoring chatter from an isis Safe House in kabul for 36 hours when a car pulled out of the compound around 9 00 a. M. On sunday morning. It was from that moment u. S. Surveillance aircraft began following the car, not knowing who the driver was. But in an interview with one of his colleagues who was with him all day, he claims that he picked him up at about 8 45 a. M. And around 9 00 a. M. They stopped to collect a laptop to take to work. Got his laptop back there and we took the laptop back. Reporter the u. S. Has told cnn there was intelligence that the car was being Dreirected Fr the Safe House on a route around the city instructing the city to meet a motorcyclist and it did. Colleagues say after collecting the laptop, they picked up another colleague and then stopped at a busy cafe to get breakfast claiming they did not come into contact with any motorcyclist on their journey to the office. The only motorcyclist they did talk to was the Security Guard at the Ngo Office seen here with his bike on cctv. For the next few hours, the colleagues carry out various tasks, Visiting Taliban Security Stations for permission to resume operations since the taliban takeover. They also visit a Bank And Return to work for lunch at 2 00 p. M. Around 2 30 p. M. He begins filling Water Containers to take back home to his family who have no access to running water. A task hed been doing for months according to his colleagues. They say that they then helped load the containers into the car before leaving around 4 00 p. M. The u. S. Military says around the same time, Drone Footage showed the Driver Loading heavy packages with other men into the car which they suspected were explosives, possibly for the imminent attack. Colleagues say zthey were droppd off before he then went to the family compound. Around 4 45 p. M. , the u. S. Says the car arrived at a residential location and another male approached the car. The military claims it had reasonable certainty that they had a legitimate Isisk Target and took the shot. It was only afterwards that the u. S. Realized that there were three children within the vicinity of the car. The family says there were it you actually seven. A u. S. Official tells cnn there was a significant secondary explosion possibly caused by a Suicide Vest or explosives in the car that may have killed the children. Two Bomb Experts we spoke to who both viewed the same Footage Cnn filmed from the scene say there is no evidence of a significant secondary explosion stating there would have been major structural damage to the surrounding buildings and vegetation and that the nearby suv would have overturned. One of them noted if a secondary blast was seen from u. S. Surveillance it most likely was the Vehicle Gas Tank exploding. This over the horizon, having incomplete information but conducting the Air Strike anyway, this is the Modis Operandi for the u. S. Military now and there are just so many risks and harm to civilians that comes with that. Reporter a u. S. Military investigation into the Drone Strike is under way. At least one of those people that were killed was an isis facilitator. Were there others killed . Yes. Who they are, we dont know. But at this point we think the procedures were correctly followed and it was a righteous strike. Reporter a Pentagon Statement defended the strike based on good intelligence, preventing an imminent threat and that no other military works harder than we do to prevent civilian casualties. But many questions are being raised as to whether they got the wrong target. How do you know from the sky what is here, says his brother. There were children in and around the car and you targeted them. Isnt it a crime . You came here and shattered our hearts into pieces. The following Day Isisk launched a Rocket Attack towards the airport from a Toy Coral Ro corolla. It was countered by the missile system. That same day the dead were buried. Ten graves on a desolate hillside overlooking kabul, belonging to a family demanding answers and justice. Now, rosemary, we are in touch with the family who are obviously struggling, not only grieving the loss of ten Family Members but they are also under threat. Their safety is at risk because they have been associated with the terror network isisk. Now, zamariah was the breadwinner of the family. His brothers had previously worked for the former afghan government and for the military. And since the taliban takeover, they were unemployed. So this is another issue that they are having to deal with. And i think that it is really important to note, rosemary, that zamariah had applied for a P2 Visa to the United States through his californian Based Ngo which described him as the best local humanitarian they had ever known just days before the strike.
